Sorry for the long post, but some more thoughts on the Election outcome and my distrust of the polls favouring Labour.

As we know, Labour have pissed off:

1: Anyone who’s brought up, or is bringing up kids on the DPB without defrauding the system (Labour still honours the MOU with the Greens).

2: Anyone whose livelihood has the remotest connection to the agricultural sector, from dairying to wine growing, and many whose livelihoods depends on tourism.

3: Anyone with a student loan, or who has paid one off, including parents of the aforementioned.

4: Anyone who has grown tired of the Maori predilection for self interest and Treaty handouts (it is clear they will now get a handsome slice of water $), or who has kids of school age, who see no need for Maori to be made compulsory.

5: All those tradesmen (including apprentices) and their families who have never had seen much work and can’t see it drying up any time soon.

6: Any sentient homeowner with a decent sized mortgage especially in Auckland

7: Anybody with a rental property, or the modest ambition of owning one.

8: Any retired person with a modest estate.

9: Any immigrant who has come here in the last ten years save most Pacific Islanders.

10: Anyone who understands the state owned media is biased.

11: All those over a certain age who recall with clarity the actual destruction caused by powerful unions.

12: Anybody who wants nothing to do with Kiwisaver.

13: Anybody who does not want any more refugees fouling up the place.

14: Anybody who is proudly Australian or American as Jacinda has already made her prejudice quite clear.

15: Anybody who has a child in their wider family who has been to or is attending a charter school.

Combined, that is a f***ing vast slice of the electorate.

All will be extremely motivated to vote against the extreme Socialists. Plus, spring is about to kick in and the ABs are still on top.

But here’s the other – slightly cynical – reason I think Jacindahling won’t make it.

By definition, a lot of her supporters are lazy and stupid. 15+ increase in a month based on little more than gender, looks and being articulate?

Policy is pretty much the same… Clearly, they are swayed by aesthetics, don’t read the fine print and so, it follows they are stupid.

Believe me, Labour supporters have already bought the champagne. And being lazy, many will stay home because ‘it’s in the bag’.

Perversely, the better the polls, the less likely Jacinda’s mob will turn out.

  I see the electoral commission is doing their best to get labour in though
  
  They are putting advance polling booths in some Auckland supermarkets which seem to align with areas of generally strong labour support eg south Auckland and west Auckland

Well for a different view…

I had a rather sobering encounter with a family member last night. This is a woman who has never, in my experience, been especially interested in politics. She is moderately prosperous. Owns two houses. Good job etc.

She announced she was going to vote for ‘Jacinda’. And it WAS personal. Not Labour but Jacinda. National had made New Zealand more unequal. The Governnet has done nothing for poor people. Jacinda would make us a better country. And so it went on and on. Nothing I could say could penetrate the glassy eyed adoration. And remember this woman is not a welfare dependent loser. Far from it.

The thing that shocked me is that she refused to acknowledge anything the Government had done on social policy. Never heard of the increase in benefits. Never heard of the massive increase in accommodation supplement. Didn’t want to hear it. The phone is off the hook.

So I resorted to tax. Tax tax and more tax. The response: “You are scaremongering. Jacinda would not be unfair.”

I asked which of Labour’s policies would make New Zealand a better nation. Not important. Jacinda would figure this out. She is really great. She has the right values and it went on like that…

I was feeling sick by now because I had exhausted my resort to logic. So I went home.

As I said it was sobering. From someone I respected. It said to me the phone is off the hook. Nothing the Government says or does in the last 2 weeks will change the vote of these people.

  One positive out of this is that if Jacinda does get in, then the expectations she has set are at such a high level they can never be remotely met. Expect a major crash in popularity when people realize that.

  I’m inclined to agree with you. Labour this time, although I’m not sure their support is as high as some Polls indicate.
  That’s ok, can’t win them all and will be a good chance for the Nats to really rejuvenate and come back.
  Labour will be exposed for how hapless they are. Question time will be hilarious.

  Appealing to these types of people was the key to Keys popularity.
  
  He let it be known that he texted Richie, loved having a BBQ, loved getting down with the homos at the big gay out, having rap battles, kissing babies and getting on American late shows.
  
  The kind of people you describe thought of Key as a “good Kiwi bloke” just as she thinks Jacinda is a “good Kiwi chick”.
  
  Being rational and consequences don’t matter to these types. It’s all about the feelz

  Unfortunately I think you will find many like that.
  
  Here are two more questions to pose to her:
  
  Over the last year, Jacinda has repeatedly said she does not want the job. She has said that Andy is the person for the job. Jacinda has already said she isn’t PM material. Why vote for someone that does not want the job?
  
  Jacinda’s campaign is “Let’s do this”. ie. Let’s win the election. She has no interest in the longer term. She’s likely going to bail out within a year and hand over to Andy.
  
  If she does stay a full term, then expect her to strangle the last bit of life out of the Labour party – finish the job Helen started.
  
  Yup, it is all about Jacinda, just like it was all about Helen. Keep focusing on the lipstick and ignore the pig behind it.

    I would never, ever, take on a role that deep down I know that I could not do well. Not only would it be deceitful, it would undoubtedly cause stress and anxiety, and ‘end in tears’ so to speak!
    
    So I’m astonished that Ardern is prepared to take on roles (Labour leadership and potentially PM) that not only she claims she didn’t want to do, but has also spoken about not coping, stress and anxiety even in lesser roles!
    
    So it appears that some people within the Labour Party are putting a lot of burden onto Jacinda Ardern’s shoulders, I wonder how this will end for her (and what sort of people would be so callous and manipulative)?

      We’re appear to be witnessing the stress – screeching and bullying behaviour during the last debate. She showed her true colours there. I’ve now formed the opinion she is a very nasty piece of work indeed. That characteristic would have always been there. It’s just that she’s let it out of the bag on national television and there’s no stuffing it back in. Appropriate in many ways she’s the Leader of the Nasty Party…..

    The power stations needed to charges the electric cars she’s promising for all state sector use. 15000 electric cars are going to need a lot of charging.

    I’m picking that they will keep her in a Queen Bee role, with others making the decisions, and her being the figurehead. Her first pregnancy will be greeted with a burst of publicity, but when the public starts getting bored (about the 16 week mark) she will ‘miscarry’ (a.k.a abort) resulting in further adulation and sympathy. She will take a couple of months off to ‘recover’, before getting pregnant in time to drop a sprog a few months before the 2020 election.
    
    All up she will spend about half of her term on maternity leave or sick leave.

  It’s called democracy. Outside the bubble people have real lives, a lot don’t distinguish between parties they just see ‘bloody politicians.’ Your friends view is legitimate to her and it’s her vote. Who knows why sentiment has changed, there won’t be a single answer but probably 1000s. I still expect there will be a tightening of the vote because in all the recent collections that has been the case. My 2 cents worth is that Joyce has been considered the mr fixit man in the past from behind the scenes, in the cold light of day and to the forefront he has little appeal – even appears arrogant. Bill has substance and credibility but Jacinda has momentum, she’s winning because she deserves to be not necessarily because she is the best, but because she has captivated a larger part of the electorate. For my own part most people who mention her are very dubious, but the polls say something else. So who knows.

      Same Maggie with a daughter, not knowing her but rather concerned about the experience issue. On the other hand an associate, small rural business owner, who uses a lot of water, met Jacinda before she was leader, liked her and said he may vote Labour for the first time. So Jacinda may have a consistent quality of impressing people she meets.

  For years now , literally ,the message pushed on tv ,radio and print has been ; child poverty, housing crisis,dirty rivers, global warming.
  Every day and every night.
  Thickos will be swayed by that propaganda.
  Notional even bought into the child poverty thing . Instead of fighting it on the basis of ideology (personal responsibilty) they surrendered.
  There was no fight in the Key administration , just surrender. Slow but sure shift to the left and now the Jax phenomena has turned the trickle into a flood.
  We’re well and truly fucked and Ngati Notional must accept some of the blame for not fighting.
  
  Examples , instead of saying fuck off we’ve enough Syrians and we’ve changed the law because of Muslim migration, we’ll up the intake ( takes the heat off from the media , but shows no fight)
  Private property rights (tobacco) surrendered to the Maori Party.
  Health and Safety ramped up to a lunatic degree.

  “I hear she heals the sick and raises the dead when her shadow passes across them. Is that true?”
  
  Depending on the answer, you can then ask them if they would be voting Labour if Jacinda wasn’t there, and why she should make such a difference.

  In troubled times society needs a cult leader from humble beginnings to follow and dream that they will make the world a better place to live in.
  
  i.e. Hitler the paper hanger, Princess Diana the prep school teacher …… They were flakes but who cared.
  
  Hitler promised the wealthy expansion of Germany, Princess Di promised to ban land mines. There are many others all started from humble backgrounds.
  
  Now we have our very own leader who was a wrapper of fish and chips.
  
  She is also a flake but her cult followers are blind to this as she is promising the impossible in the short term – housing for everyone, full employment and all rivers crystal clear. The expression is …there will be jam tomorrow if you vote for me.
  
  Her party will be unable to keep their promises and in the process will wreck this country, first by bankrupting farmers.
  
  Joseph Stalin would be proud of her..

      I didn’t say we need to pay more tax (as a % of GDP), but there is value in broadening the tax base. I’d happily see a CGT come in with offsetting reductions in income tax.
      
      But I’m sure we both agree that Labour/Greens see a CGT being in addition to income tax, rather than in place of some income tax.

        Night after night it was negative headlines and Labour attacks that National ‘wasn’t spending enough’ or John Key wasn’t ‘fixing things quicker’ (as if) etc.
        
        It finally took for the likes of a couple of astute journos in the Australian media to point out that NZ’s economy was doing well and that NZ had a very capable Prime Minister and how lucky we were etc, to the astonishment of the NZ media who just couldn’t believe it (and eventually a few, but still not all of the media to this day, started to see things differently)!

        I went to a local ‘Spring Carnival’ today. Noticed one of the local rag’s two work vehicles parked in the same carpark. The driver was busy at the carnival, fawning over the local Labour MP as he took photos for this week’s edition. It was sickening.
        
        By the time I drove off about 90 minutes later, someone had kicked in the driver’s door on the journo’s work vehicle. I’m no forensic detective, but it looked like the kicks (two, judging by the shape of the indentation) had been delivered backwards with the heel, probably to avoid scuffing the shoe.

National need to back off the tax angle (half the people like to pay more tax to get bedda health and education) and the other half like to sit back and take the taxes.

They need to focus on the jobs and exports that will dissapear, the refugees that will pour in with their families. The huge rise in the number of solo mums and beneficiaries. The fact that the Greens will be in Power. And on Jacinda’s lack of experience and her finance minister.

For many of the 8years John Key was Prime Minister the media have said that the female vote was the big difference between Labour and National. So it does not matter whether Newsrooms poll is right or wrong time will tell but they have Jacinda capturing the female vote at 55% to 22% and National having the edge of females over 55 years of age. This maybe goes some way to explaining the difference in the vote and keeping Jacinda and Labour on a upwards percentage of the vote.

Equally, if it is just an ‘opinion’ piece, where is the alternative view? Name me one Herald ‘opinion’ writer who even comes close to disecting a capital gains tax (why, on what, how done, what likely revenue, at what cost, what likely unintended consequences)?

And why, to my knowledge, have I never heard once any talk from Labour about excluding businesses, if the policy goal is to address house prices?

The level of debate in this country makes me cringe. This taxation stuff, the FPAs, the Labour carbon announcement yesterday, The Green’s benefit free for all, to name but a few; the list just goes on and on.

The economic impact of this stuff will be massive and all we seem to get is puff, child-like ‘opinion’ pieces.

Brian Gaynor is usually astute in his Saturday columns in the Hooerald but today he’s way off mark with his shots at Winston Peters on the Ports of Auckland.

Peters has been suggesting Marsden Point as the country’s main import port, freeing up Auckland. Peters is far from the only person who has suggested this.

Here’s one Gaynor point:

The cost of building an extensive road and rail network from Marsden Point to Auckland would be prohibitive and take decades to complete.

That’s bullshit, Brian. Marsden Point isn’t far from Whangarei, and the country does need a good road right to that city. Rail exists to Whangarei and upgrading it and a relatively short extension to Marsden Point is not prohibitive.

Marsden Point already is the national fuel centre and has a fine harbour suitable for the biggest container ships likely to regularly serve NZ.

But the big point is that Aucklanders want there waterfront back. The rational port plan for the top of the North Island is Marsden Point for imports and Tauranga for exports.

Gaynor wants Ports of Auckland partly privatised. Of course that would be a lousy float if its container trade (overwhelmingly of imports) were destined to be moved to Marsden Point.

  This argument takes one back to the days of Ralph TRIMMER. But the world has moved, apart from a few important points:
  1. Whangarei/Marsden is no closer to the biggest pop centres than it was 45-50 years ago
  2. The pop centres south of Bombay have grown, and will continue to grow, at a massive rate, far exceeding that in the north.
  3. The case can be made for moving the Port of Akld ….but …. to where????
  4. Tauranga(Hamilton/Sth Akld) seems more obvious than Marsden.
  5. Until the population weighting is included it is all just a diverting argument.
  6. Sell the Akld terminal land and use the proceeds to pay for roads/rail. BUT no waterfront stadium.

I dont think Jacinda will introduce a CGT but her 5 year brightline is quite brutal. In Australia if you keep the house for a year you only pay CGT on 50% of the house purchase price, in England you get an annual tax free allowance of 11000 quid.
In England the CGT, which covers every asset, raises just 1% of all state revenue and of that 1% only 18% of it is from property.
NZ has an absolutely awesome tax code it seems stupid to change it for little actual gain. I also think if she is elected and implements half her policies it could be re named a capital loss tax.

  I can’t speak for others but an electoral loss, while serious, is not really what’s going on here.
  
  National “lost” a long time ago, and I say that as someone who has not voted Labour since 1999. For the moment I won’t refer again to my 2008 predictions as to what Key would do and what he would be like as PM, but suffice to say that what’s happening now is simply what was going to happen in 2020. For all the boasting about occupying the centre-ground and pushing Labour further Left, no consideration ever seemed to be made about the Overton Window effect and what would happen when a Labour party like that re-gained power, as they were certain to do after four, if not three election losses in a row.
  
  Put it this way, if English and National somehow pull this one out of the fire, what lesson do you think they will draw from it?
  
  My God, we need to be more like Labour to stay ahead of them.
  
  That, far more than election wins and losses, is what always worried me, and does so now more than ever.

        Why should the New Zealand and Australian Banks be more resilient than the Irish ones ?
        
        What was the capital base of the Irish Banks in 2006 and 2007 ?
        
        If a 4.7 unweighted median multiple across its metros blew the Irish banks out of the water, how come ours are supposed to survive 5.5 and5.9 respectively with (in New Zealand’s case) a skinny capital base of just $NZ30 billion and a $NZ1 trillion (CoreLogic estimate) housing market with in excess of half it bubble value ?
        
        Following the bust, the Central Bank of Ireland found it was high income multiple lending that did the most damage to the Irish Banks … and it imposed a general lending cap of 3.5 times annual household incomes.
        
        A year earlier the Bank of England had capped at 4.5 times.
        
        In normal housing markets house prices should not exceed 3.0 times annual household income, requiring sensible mortgage loads of about 2.5 times (Demographia Survey).
        
        The days of housing inflation are over. That’s for sure.

Thinking about Jacinda and Helen (who is probably leading behind the scenes) I always think about a Judge Dredd story – part of the Judge Child Quest. Dredd is tracking The Angel Gang who have kidnapped the Judge Child, and to do that he has enlisted the aid of ‘Old Joe Blind’, a homesteader that the Angel gang once tortured and left blind for no good reason. In the story, Junior Angel finally catches up to Old Joe and “finishes the job” this time, torturing him to death. (Old Joe: “Junior Angel! No, not again!”)

It reminds me of NZ somehow. It feels like Helen has come back to finish the job she started in fking over the country.

  I just saw the John Campbells doco on lunch in Decile 10 vs 1 school. I’ve been to a lower decile school for a once a week class with my son . In that school all the kids were provided with free fruit and there were large plastic tubs of free fruit every day. The kids have also received free milk. And charity KidsCan also works in poor schools and provides free targeted lunch. I don’t think it seemed believable that almost everyone had no breakfast and then no lunch except for a single packet of chips. Really? I’d like to know from J. Campbell which kids had lunch money and what free lunch, free fruit, and free milk programmes is provided in that particular school. If no breakfast or lunch is truly the case on such a large scale the kids would be seriously malnourished and it’s obvious we need to reduce the benefit and provide free breakfast and lunch at school.

I lived in a State house all my childhood. My parents lived in a state or state provided (went with dads job) up until dad retired. Mum never worked and looked after us kids. Those homes were never moldy or damp because we looked after them like they were our own. That was the difference in those days.
Today If both parents work the house has to be locked up all day. Washing can’t be left out if you away so it is hung up inside. Wet clothes left lying around etc etc etc.
It a window broke, we played outside with balls in those days, dad would fix it himself rather than tape cardboard over the break. Today there is an attitude of entitlement which is being encouraged by the comrades. Up till now, being retired, I did not have to worry about “that lot” but now I sense they are coming for me. Taxes, reduced benifits, levies. At least I dont worry about death duties, and as for funeral Insurance I belive in the saying: “Don’t pay the ferryman to you get to the other side”

Interesting that Nelson is back in the news with another great first that nationally might be more significant than all the others.
Tasman Rest Home has a means to handle the pay increase for carers. They will introduce another work category of worker to be known as “home assistant” to carry out all the tasks that do not involve direct “care” of the residents. The changes are an unintended consequence of the boost in the carer pay scale. Hope assistant roles will carry out all menial tasks previously done by trained carers who will now only be required for direct care needs.
This is a masterstroke of good management that could snowball and limit the level of increases required for residents. Not sure if it has been introduced or in fact conceived anywhere else but it is very radical. While it was normal for carers to carry out all necessary duties the new wage regime has prompted a revaluation of roles. Thus while the carer gets the job of wiping bums the bed pan might be cleaned by “home assistants”. It also has the potential to see more dissection of rolls when Labour start rolling out their pay hikes. Go The Bays. Go Nick.

Abandoned by James’ dad just before she was due to give birth, solo mother Cynthia Shaw later fell in love with fellow teacher Susanne Jungersen while they were working at the same school. She told her son when he was 12.

The world was warmer in the 1400 and 1500’s !
They were growing vegetables in Greenland.

The last ice ages were 10,000 years apart, not 100 years!

If you really want to stop “global warming” or “climate change”…

The ONLY WAY is to start reducing the world population.
Starting with India, China, Bangladesh, Egypt, Nigeria and Uganda.
Sterilise all women after two children.

Labour and the Jacinda fans are calling for Simon O’Conner to apologize about the Labour Leaders view on euthanasia in supporting assisted suicide and then in another breathe campaigning against youth suicide. O’Conner says that Jacinda is encouraging youth suicide by supporting assisted suicide amongs’t the elderly, disabled and sick. He is right with what he believes and the left can’t campaign agains’t one and believe it is alright to agree with the other.
