  As an exporting country you should be cheering this, our exports in value go up and the crap “stuff” we buy from overseas goes up so we dont need to buy what we don’t want, meaning that we import less. The negative Balance of payments we have improves. It is a win win don’t know why you are complaining??

    Article in the Western Leader. Douglas Pharmaceuticals west auckland’s biggest employer has heaps of jobs on it’s web page, everything from warehouse managers to scientists. And are worried about cutting immigrants as they need the qualified staff. Surely the question is why aren’t NZ producing scientists of a high enough quality. AT and Watercare engineers huge proportion are immigrants. Is our education system up to scratch. It’s not just about paying teachers more. Are we producing enough high achievers in the STEM categories. And why is a West Auckland employers struggling to fill these great jobs.

  We should wait until the policy wins and losses are revealed and NOT rely on the children at Stuff/DomPost. They are in the Toothfairy’s knickers (so to speak).
  One thing Winston will remember, and so will the Redmelons, is that they voted for the April 1 tax cuts. So any attempt to do that or impose some alternative tax, will provide English and Joyce et al with a gift from Heaven.

  A nation can recover from economic cycles but it can’t recover from being replaced by its own leaders.
  
  In any case, one must wonder how “strong” an economy really is if it requires all time historic interest lows and world leading immigration to eke out a few % points of gross GDP “growth” (while net GDP actually declines).
  
  In any case, do you really expect such a lightweight (Arden) to be in charge for any longer than 3 years before she’s turfed out by the punters?
  
  If a National Party reemerges in 2020 that one wouldn’t have to hold its nose to vote for, we might be better off in the long run.

Truth is there was no mood for change up to the point when Flap Jaw Peters fronted up to Bill English,wanting another concession.Bill looked at Peters flanked by his two henchmen. Ron “skid “Mark and the man known as the taxpayer funded porno viewer called Shane Jones.
Bill handed Peters his arse on a plate. He said according reports. Get the **** out of here and take those two free loading pests with you.
Peters in a state of Pique virtually ran back to “Commie Chic” Comrade Ardern ,and pleaded for what Bill English told him to get stuffed for. The rest of the story is still being played out.

We all want to be on the winning side, and by all means, the local Chinese despise Winston Peters for his well-excused racism against immigrants, especially on the mothers and fathers of the new Chinese immigrants here in New Zealand.

Interestingly, I can’t help noticing something weird going on wechat today: after Peters revealed his choice of coalition earlier in the evening, a unity of complaints against the coalition government of Labour, NZF and Green has my wechat timeline filled. People become cynical and start cracking jokes about a serious plan to emigrate back to China, or Australia or Canada. Images been photoshopped or subtitled to show their disapproval, and others are calling upon a booze to quench the flames of their resentment. For a long while, there are people wailing and whining across the local Chinese community on wechat, it feels as if we were on the losing side, and it was an unfair game, and now we need to live with this undesirable trauma forever.
However I don’t think this election failed me, on the contrary, it taught me a lot and I can feel something is growing in the collective insights of the local Chinese community. As an ethnic minority, the local Chinese need to realise that we may have a voice, but our influence is limited. What we need to do is to learn to play the game, not to change the game.

Naisi Chen from Labour is the youngest Chinese candidate in the election history of New Zealand. Though she didn’t win, she was courageous enough to try to play the game, and that, I should say, set a great example for our youths.

Having a strong and capable opposition party is not exactly a bad thing, because we can make sure that the new government will need work their best to develop New Zealand, maybe in a different way, but into the similar better future.

And, are the policies from the coalition parties evil at all? Where did the local Chinese get such an impression that if they take the office, it is going to be a disaster? Or are we so getting used to being lazy that we just believe whatever people around us believe?

Some commented that no one but democracy won today. However, democracy makes us anxious and righteous when in power, and confident and persuasive when not. It is probably more valuable to learn to compromise and tolerate than to risk the bossy over-confidence.

While walking past the wail and whine, I say, do not despair, leave the politics to the politicians, focus on the things you can control and make changes where necessary to your own way of living and opportunities will be waiting ahead.

So we get the Government we deserve.
To hear Peters decrying capitalism that has not worked in New Zealand ask other countries who have also tried to destroy it as he appears to want.
For one like him, who has thrived in a capitalist world very well indeed, that is the height of hypocrisy. His older resthome capitalist voters will be very sad at such comments, but they are now the irrelevant generation if we hear correctly.
Listening to Radio Left Wing they appeared to only interview women in the street who all think it was time for a generational change.
God help New Zealand as nobody else will.
I think the National opposition with some very skilled younger people will have a field day in Parliament.
Can Labour do what they said ? – I doubt they could get a majority from the Greens and Winston (although he appears to be unwell listening to his breathing last evening).
This new Government will be held fast to account by National who still have the largest number of MPs.
Stupid system.

  Winston Peter’s strong emphasis on decrying capitalism was another stuff up of his yesterday.
  
  After all, it’s not like Peter’s is advocating for Socialism or worse (and of course he can claim he wasn’t because he didn’t use the S word)!
  
  But what Peter’s was meaning perhaps was a kinder kind of capitalism, perhaps the very thing National was undertaking by ensuring funding was kept aside for those in need during the GFC, by National raising benefits, keeping WFF and providing more funding for vulnerable children etc.
  
  Sure, putting aside that these were things that some commentators here decried as they painted National as being Labour-Lite, but my point actually is, Peters and NZF could have achieved that (with some additional tweaking) by working with National.
  
  Instead Winston and NZF blew it, by aligning with a Labour Party under Jacinda that will be found out to be just as, if not more, “socialist” (Corbynist) than it was with Helen Clark and regardless of that, which I could cope with, but what’s worse is Winston and NZF have enabled the Greens which is far worse than Labour on it’s own (like in Helen’s day), as the Greens will drive an agenda beyond a kinder type of capitalism to a worse kind of socialism (than say some European nations practice) to that of approaching Venezuela if Labour foolishly allows them.
  
  Another of Winston’s Legacies that will be forever remembered, when history judges him to have been a fool.

I think they’ll last about 18 months. The good news is this may well be the final chapter of NZF and the Greens in their socialist format. Sometimes it takes a bit of pain to get things right in the long run. National will be back rejuvenated, much stronger and hopefully further to the right. This is the right result.

  Many voters do not want a government that is too far right, that is the mistake many people make. They vote Winston to nudge National to the right and Winston turns around and anoints the left.
  ACT would have provided a useful outlet for those yearning for a government more to the right but was effectively destroyed by two, three or four of its former politicians.

Under MMP it is a huge ask to expect any single party to gain 51% of the seats in parliament… National almost achieved it this time, but seriously the writing is on the wall for them unless a competent and credible voice for conservatism and capitalism emerges from this mess.

    ACT’s trouble was the stupid Alliance and media campaign which labelled it as far far right and which it has become as sensible moderates left and the extremists joined. I remember following a couple down some stairs at conference who nervously looked over their shoulders as they made some non-PC comments to each other.

Helen Clark managed the economy by over taxing personal income which helped people borrow money and claim the offset. Personal borrowing soared during the Clark years. A lot of pull forward demand.

John Key was an extension of Clark. His economic trick was open door immgration and large capital flows into NZ from China. The economy was chicken shit but there was money for lending and construction.

The banks loved John Key. But he fucked housing and national can fuck off as well.

Under Clark and Key the underlying economy was fucked because of burden of the State. Now we have lipstick on pig. Christ knows what her party trick is going to be for the economy. NZ is a massive debtor nation and immgration has fucked NZ. Cant do that. She will probably borrow massive amounts of money.

Start buying US$. The RBNZ will collapse interest rates. The State will borrow and piss away billions over the next 3 years.

Let’s face it, it was always going to be a case of ‘utu’- revenge on Peters’ part for Bill having seconded the motion to expel Peters from the National Party all those years ago.

Bill and the National Party were the ‘winners’ of the election and if NZ were a mature nation who respected fair play and understood the way MMP is meant to work Bill would have been declared PM on election night and given the right to form a coalition government on his own terms, just as Merkel was declared Chancellor after her party scored the winning 33% in the recent German elections.

Bill can hold his head high for having lead National to a stunning election ‘win’ despite the formation of this appalling coalition of losers that Peters has been allowed to cobble together.

The National Party will be the strongest and most competent opposition this country has ever seen.

  The housing market is the way it is because of very cheap money over a long period of time and lax lending by the banks (lax compared to what it used to be 20 years ago). The same has happened all over the world —name one country which has “controlled” it’s housing market.
  If you are correct that big Asian buyers were to blame then we will see them disappear quite quickly as they move their money elsewhere now Peters and co are in the hot seat. ( But I personally don’t think they are a big factor in the market)

  Housing will not be brought back into control. RMA has delivered excessive power to existing homeowners and other protesters against development. This limits sites – both greenfield and intensification. Then building costs are excessive. So the value of existing housing will be driven by the cost of new housing. Turning off immigration completely will not help if there is an increasing need for housing from non-immigration population growth. Clobbering landlords will tend to drive housing from rental to owner occupier and hurt tenants (unless the state sets itself up as a total rental housing provider). House values could drop by 20% for periods which could hurt those who must sell but will not affect long term owners.

And where were Stephen Joyce and Paula Bennett during the campaign, they left it all to Bill, who did really well.

Stephen Joyce stuffed it up with his 11 million hole which was never proved either way. If he had come up with a smaller hole that could be proved it would not have mattered.

Also he ran a very poor advertising campaign, all I ever saw and heard on tv was Jacinda.

Lovely comments on Radio NZ. Linda Clarke telling ‘men’ off because a ‘male’ had the audacity to call the Tooth Fairy a ‘chicky babe’. She went on to say that you’d never hear anybody call John Key or Bill English a ‘chicky babe’.

Having seen both men on TV I’d have to agree. I will never call them ‘chicky babes’.

Also, pay equity came back for discussion. Great comment posted yesterday that showed clearly what business would do if in reality women were paid less than men for the same role. If men were more expensive to employ, of course you’d replace them with cheaper women. But it doesn’t happen. Why? Because they do different jobs and men remain on the job with greater consistency and reliability.

  Yes pay equity is a bit of a worry. The move to pay equity for rest home workers has led many rest homes around the country to close down because they cannot afford the wage bill. Labour’s policy to increase the minimum wage to $16.50 per hour is also a bad move. It will restrict job opportunities for low skilled workers and it will also hammer small businesses.

Be concerned for the economic future: Winston has signaled too that strife may be near. He also has signaled that there is not a Finance Minister in sight.

We now are to have an an amateur government at the whim of a failing old politician. There is a hint of malice; many of the policies proposed are nonsensical and some dangerous. Their belief in omnipotence in regards to immigration, housing and economics bodes well for disaster.

The idea that National needed to be smacked into shape may have materialised at the price of a potentially very expensive trip to the left. A revisit to the 1970’s with wage price spirals is awaited. Unions are on standby for mayhem. We had a measured social welfare system against GDP: it was finely tuned–upset that and a taxpayer revolt is highly likely. Those unwilling to pay won’t stay.

MMP needs revision. The government should go tho the party with the highest number of elected members. Only elected members should vote on Bills.
List MP’s should have limited access to Ministerial positions with a a maximum of 1 for at least 5 members and 2 for 10 or more; provided that no Executive can have more than 3 list MP’s in total. List MP’s should have full rights as to Committee work where their differences can show up.

National has a done a sterling job in steering NZ to the point of international envy for our prosperity and agreeable social welfare. It’s never time to change to something worse. Thanks Bill and Team.

    One curious coda to the RMA debate that concluded last week was that the Opposition parties plus ACT and United Future all voted again during the third reading debate for amendments that would have abolished Rural Urban Growth Boundaries and allowed the financing of infrastructure bonds paid for with targeted rates.
    
    The amendments were defeated by National and the Maori Party.
    
    The irony of a Government that has railed against restrictions on land development by councils voting against removing those restrictions should be noted. And also that the proposal for infrastructure bonds was backed by the right-leaning New Zealand Initiative and voted for by the Greens and Labour. Strange times indeed.

English did indeed front the media, and as you will see, Soper was right at the front, demanding answers from the outgoing PM. But there wasn’t a trace of bitterness from English. In the circumstances, he was gracious and classy.

      She may have no option but to go early. National/Act will be a formidable opposition, and National will dominate the select committees by sheer force of numbers. They will be able to delay the passage of legislation through the committee process. They will also have the biggest allocation of Parliamentary Service resources, and get the lion’s share of oral questions.
      
      National will be the most formidable opposition since MMP began. My only fear is that there will be moves to dump Bill English, who is actually National’s biggest asset. National needs to be united behind English, and as an opposition light fires under every Minister, especially those who show even the smallest sign of weakness.

      Much will depend on Peters’ longevity. I personally believe he is far from well, and I would be surprised if he lasts a year before ill-health forces his retirement. As a Minister, he is not going to be able to take frequent absences from Parliament as he has this year. When Peters goes, all bets are off in NZF.

National can show the country what a competent opposition can do.
If they play their cards right, the voters will be thoroughly sick of Labour, the Greens and NZ First by the time of the next election, and may even be willing to repeal MMP.

No New Zealander under the age of 55 really has an idea of what a recession can be like. Certainly the Chinese immigrants have only known good times since the mid-1980s.

I remember how the giants crashed and burned in the Tokyo recession of the early 1990s, which smokes on and one like a coal-mine fire, to this very day…

I have not had a unit pay increase in over 25 years, but I have learned to be more productive, and I am paid in yen. I have seen Kiwi salaries double in the last 15 years and house prices go crazy. It’s like Tokyo deja vu, all over again…

THOUGHTS ON THE 2017 COALITION (20 Oct 2017) ~ John Stringer

1) Personally I thought NZF would go National (and have lost some cream bun bets on that with some Indian friends) but Jacinda is right: MORE NZers voted for the Coalition + Supply (Lab/NZF/Greens) than voted National so there is a genuine mandate for Change

2) The 4+1 cabinet posts to NZF is honourable as it reflects percentage of votes and that is a fair outcome from Labour

3) At first I had doubts about Jacinda Ardern and her age and perceived fragility; but I have to say I have been increasingly impressed with her articulation and management of issues so far; how she managed the campaign; and her speeches since election night

4) Personally I would have thought another 3 years experience for her was needed (but who am I?); but with Winston Peters as a mentor; and solid advice behind her from Helen Clark and Annette King she could evolve in to a good PM and team manager (I like her people skills and positivity)

5) You have to give Jacinda credit; deputy leader; leader; hauled Lab up from certain defeat at 25% to come within a sneeze of National; and won the negotiating to become PM – those are runs on the board no one can take away from her

6) That said; Jacinda Ardern owes the Premiership ENTIRELY to Winston Peters (she was defeated by National by a significant margin)

7) What now for Bill English? A liminal moment to depart and conclude his political career – but not right away; he needs to anchor the Opposition (which will be formidable) and transition in a new leader

8) WHO? Needs to be a fighter as Nats now in Opposition: so I’d pick Gerry or Amy in that order: both hugely safe Nat seats (and South Is for a change) but Gerry would make a better opposition leader than Amy; Amy a better PM; Judith Collins perhaps but putting two women up against eachother may have optics issues depending on your perspective in terms of which generation they represent and voter demographics amongst female voters in each party

9) This is a changing of the Guard: Gen X (my generation passes) to Gen Y (Jacinda Ardern) given the power by a Baby Boomer (Winston Peters)

10) NZF Cabinet: Winston (Deputy PM & Foreign Affairs); Shane Jones (Regional Devlpmnt; Forestry; Fisheries; Pacifica) ; Ron Mark (Defence & Police); Tracey Martin (Education + extras she wants); not sure on Under Sec outside Cabinet

Labour/NZ1st come out hard on immigration today. But I’m confused. Overseas anti-immigration stances (eg Trump ) are described as far-right. Anti-TPPA (Also Trump) is supposed to be far right. Labour claims to be left. And the Greens even mo’ left. But yet their top priority is slashing immigration hard. From Wikipedia , “Right-wing populism often involves appeals to the “common man” and opposition to immigration.[” How is this different to the much mocked “build a wall” statements from trump. Only difference is we have a geographic wall of water. How long will it take educated Greenies realise that actually there is nothing high brow or clever about the govt they’ve supported who shares many policies with trump and go teal for the next elections.

    But that aside, yes there are in fact broad similarities between this coalition and Trump’s agenda. Reducing immigration, a more interventionist economy, big spending on infrastructure, a suspicion of free trade and neo-liberalism…
    
    Yes there are differences too, on things like the environment and climate change. But the broad outline, especially with regards to immigration and the economy, are, while not identical, very similar.
    
    I understand that lefties need to maintain their pure PC stance and pretend they are nowhere near Trumpism, but populism is populism, and we have a populist coalition government. There is not a wide canyon between America First and New Zealand First, and the NZF party aside, parts of Labour’s policies for a while now have been about putting New Zealand First. Combine that with the actual NZF party, and comparisons between our new overlords and Trump are quite reasonable.
    
    All of which means that unlike many today on KB I’m fairly sanguine about the outcome, though I would have preffered National/NZF. There will be much that I disagree with, but looking at the full half of the glass, things I agree with as well. Reduced immigration, a ban on foreign housing speculators and foreign ownership of land, a better deal for the regions now that the water tax has been nixed.
    
    Whether or not this coalition can pull it off and keep the economy growing is the big question, but we shall see.

      But on a brighter note, no one can take away from you that you picked Trump in 2016.
      
      Can a government like this one, in the face of a skilled, large, united (sit down, Judith Collins!) opposition, who won 45% of the vote to maintain the status quo, effect lasting change in one term? I doubt it, and I’m picking them to be a one-term failure like the “over-promise and under-deliver” Kirk-Rowling administration of 1972-75. And other than the triumph of Big Norm as Minister of Foreign Affairs, even more incompetent…
      
      But if, against current expectation, Ardern, with a three-headed hydra can somehow keep Peters from wandering off the reservation due to the combination of laziness, boredom, and sheer-bloodimindedness that has in one way or other sabotaged his last three tenures in cabinet (he is 0-3 in going the full term! 😉 ), and keep it all together, face down the misfortunes and unfavourable events of the next three years with aplomb and go back to the nation in 2020 and convince them that she is competent
      
      …then she will sure deserve to be re-elected.

I wonder how those who rationalise that National’s defeat is a good thing, because they can return as a genuine centre-right party, reconcile that with the small number of voters for ACT – the only party to the right of National.

To return to government National has to increase its vote (win votes off other parties in the centre) or build a coalition partner (blue greens), or hope the current government fails to take (be a credible government option in 2020).

The history of this is in the 2005 and 2008 results. National’s centre-right peak was not enough in 2005. So in 2008 they compromised on some policy areas to move into the centre, and yet would still have struggled to win if they had not taken out NZ First from parliament.

  Labour are amateur and the fresh blood is no help it just makes a bigger mess.
  The performance of the forthcoming combo will shortly show their obvious deficiencies.
  Expect a quick return for National.

Here are the policy gains for the Nationals right wing coalition partner the Greens.

GREENS’ POLICY GAINS LISTED IN THE LETTER TO PARTY MEMBERS:

Significant climate action with a shift to a net-zero carbon emissions economy by 2050 (specific focuses will be on transport, energy and primary industries).
The establishment of an independent climate commission.
Support for a shift in farming to more sustainable land use.
Overhaul of the welfare system, removing “excessive sanctions” and a review of Working for Families.
Increase to conservation budget.
New water quality measures.
Free counselling for under-25s and access to mental health services and support for everyone.
Special needs education access.
Progress to end gender pay gap in public service.
A reduction in number of students living in hardship.
Increase in funding for drug and alcohol addictions services and a referendum on the personal use of cannabis by the 2020 election.

I reckon Nationals base will be pretty happy with this despite losing the election. Wouldn’t you agree?

It will be interesting to see what National does leadership wise.

It’s an easy decision to stay with the current leader, if he wants it. And he may because National can credibly pose as a government in waiting for 3 years and take advantage of any doubts about the new government (and reprise the old debates about a CGT once again in 2020).

Thus it would not be a normal opposition – negating what is being done, but stating what they would be doing.

  For most of the last three years Labour + Green + NZ First had 50% of the vote.
  
  Key saw the writing on the wall and moved on – he was after all National leader when they ran the successful effort to get NZ First out of parliament in 2008.
  
  He did it to increase the odds of NZ First going with National when there was another leader of the party.

      There will be an investigation shortly into the dereliction of duty to not evict you to date for the unsatisfied judgements for unpaid rates. Not collecting those promptly is unfair to other ratepayers and appears unlawful.
      
      The Auditor General who has the responsibility for Auckland City Council should also be asked to investigate this breach of fiscal duty.

If they want relief from the toxic cesspool that passes for Australian politics, or reassurance that things can be just as contrary and irrational elsewhere, they need only look at what’s been happening for the past few weeks on the other side of the Ditch.

New Zealand’s political elite, who stubbornly refuse to acknowledge the obvious flaws in the MMP system and had previously defended the Peters circus as an example of MMP working exactly as intended, were conspicuously silent on this travesty. Whether New Zealand voters will eventually wake up to the fact that they’ve been played for a bunch of suckers remains to be seen.

Here in the 4th inning I think it may be time to return to reading Master of The Senate.

Buy hey – Bryant finally hit a home run. So … 9-1. But the Dodgers will just pull Kershaw soon and then kill the Cubs with their bullpen over the rest of the game.

Fair enough. Dodgers are the best team in baseball. They deserve to go to the World Series. 🙂
