Did anyone else notice the Jacinda’s huge contradiction on TV1 last night? With one breath she announced that increasing the minimum wage actually created jobs and in the next she said she was looking into ways to assist small businesses to avoid having to lay staff off.
Is it too much to hope our ever diligent and unbiased MSM would pick up on this, and challenge her on it?

  I didn’t see it but I would like her to explain to me how increasing wages increases employment. That is a completely new theory which needs to be explored more but in the meantime I will go with my theory of it costing jobs

    The Greater Seattle, Wa. Council recently scored a massive own goal when, having mandated such an increase, found to their “surprise”, a massive increase in lower paid unemployment. Of course they immediately sought an academic study to “prove” otherwise. But one of the honest academics turned into a whistle blower.
    Grantie and the Peters/Ardern regime will not find Treasury as easy to prostitute!
    The MSM however, will continue to blow stardust.

  Helen Clark was all about private debt. Key was about immigration. Debt and immigration helped their governments: short term economy but now they are problems. Both Vlark and Key government very good for housing which in turn good for them . That option not available for Princess. Princess has to go the opposite.

  Another Jacinda double-speak piece which was well reported a couple of days ago had me scratching my head. She said that their newly announced investment for the Regions follows on from “9 years of neglect”.
  
  I’m trying to think back as to what Labour was doing for the regions last time they were in power and what National did that was different for her to claim there has been “9 years of neglect”?
  
  Did she really mean there has been perhaps nearly three decades of neglect since the Labour govt in the 1980’s enacted reforms affecting the regions? If so the 1999-2008 Labour Govt must have been guilty of neglect too! I could be wrong so happy to be corrected …

  Ideology promotes muddlesome meddlement. Small employers will have expanded payroll costs and WFF government payouts likely reduced with abatements. A transfer of costs from the state to the employers. Unions will enforce that so small employers will fold passing their payroll obligations back to the state as “job seekers”. Meanwhile the increase lower pay levels will reach up to the upper ones as relativities are adjusted. Stagflation could be on its way.

  I can’t for the life of me connect the dots on this one.
  Increasing the minimum wage creates jobs? I’ll tell you what, there will be people laid off, don’t you worry and even more when the minimum wages hits the $20/hour in 3 or so years. Of course, the cost of goods and services will go up – a business cannot absorb increased pay rises without passing the cost onto the consumer. So in the end, all it will mean is that people will still be chasing their tails balancing the ledger. If, however, the revered Ms Ardern had any business sense at all, she would understand these sorts of things. Seems not…….
  Also, employers will have to match the kiwi saver contributions accordingly, so they are paying even more than the minimum wage.
  I’m hoping there will be significant tax breaks for employers before all this chucking other peoples’ money around becomes law…..

The HC Judge’s decision is still subject to appeal, and legal action against the “reputable” agencies that “sold” the rights, has already started. Add to that the judicial observation (inferred) that National had exhibited no mens rea, and had not acted in a irresponsible/reprehensible manner.

    Will be an extra cost for tradies too, who can’t take the tram or the cycleway to their customers. They will have to tack on an extra cost for commuting into central and east auckland because of increases to regional fuel tax (yep), and don’t forget we just had an auckland transport levy added (was it $70 on our rates?), plus the minimum wage is going up (yep) parking cost hikes (yep). This should make peoples lives better and more affordable for sure.

Now that the coalition of losers are rolling out their policies I’m starting to feel a little bit excited. They just haven’t a clue and the short term they will have will show them up as naive, ineffectual liars and hypocrites. It is going to be a heap of fun watching them make total asses of themselves. It’ll also be great fun reading KB. The downside will be the complete shambles they will leave the country in.

  Convictions based on the evidence of jailhouse snitches are notoriously unreliable, and the Criminal Procedure Act requires a warning to be given to a jury in such a case. That doesn’t stop them being used. Read Steve Braunias’ piece on the informer in the Lundy case. Once witness C’s identity is disclosed, his complete lack of credibility will be apparent.

    One of the false statements Philip Morgan recited like a parrot in the Lundy appeal went like this.
    “This is why Lundy told witness X that he had to kill his daughter.”
    The issue is that Ross Burns defended Mark Lundy in 2015, and proved in court with dates, prison uniforms, days of the week, and the difference between waiting for a trial and waiting for an appeal, that Mark Lundy and WitnessX were never in the same place at the same time.
    Detective Olsen is the snitch hunter. It would be interesting to find how he researches for his snitches.
    Witness B in Tamihere was also proved to never be in the same place at the same time.
    This verdict and sentence will have the police in a huddle, they should be called to account.

  What is amazing is the whole thing was blown wide open by a jailhouse bush lawyer (Arthur Taylor) with disastrous consequences for Witness C. He took a private prosecution against Witness C and succeeded despite the difficulties of doing it from behind bars. This makes the Police and Crown Law look plain stupid.

      I went and watched this yesterday. Witness C was able to joke with one of the guards and converse with a TV1 presenter effortlessly. He has been an informer for decades and is apparently in protective custody. The officer in charge of the Tamihere case appeared at ‘C’s’ parole hearing and he got out very early before being recalled. It looks as though his 1st recall (he is now on his second) was longer than the time he first served.
      Unfortunately Witness C is not the only one of his kind. First event of it’s time and it was forceful to see it happening in a NZ court when kiwis probably mostly associate this with the USA. Interestingly I recall reading that this was not the first private prosecution for perjury in NZ, the first was in 1903 or 4, and made by a fellow who was falsely convicted of stealing sheep I think it was, got his convicted overturned and ended up being compensated twice. I read about that in the long Judgement for the recent Pora JR application. As for Arthur, I don’t think any one has succeeding with JR as many times as he. I actually think he will go onto continue contributing to society through the Law.

    Even if he did make an admission in prison to a fellow prisoner, that’s not really enough.
    
    If I ended up in prison I’d probably want to be seen to be tough so people don’t fuck me around. That would probably end up in at least embellishing some stories.
    
    For example, I have a scar on my arm from a boil that looks just like a bullet scar. I could easily spin that into a yarn involving getting into a gunfight, killing someone , then patching myself up to stay away from authorities.
    
    No doubt many prisoners do this and boast about things they never did.

Heard Twyford this morning dribbling on asto the new Kiwibuild for first home affordable housing.
When questioned he said that as I understand it for every one immigrant builder there must be one local.
A leading building employment company virtually says that it is not possible to build 100,000 affordable homes in the next 10 years – admirable new Labour sentiments, as there are not enough people to do this. Cheap new slums perhaps !
So employ a qualified overseas builder at say min $60 per hour – employ a New Zealand apprentice at new min wage $20 per hours plus and what have you got – a mess as no young New Zealander will work for that money.
He/she can go to free university plus new $50 allowance for piss, and no work really required to get a degree for which there will be no work available anyway.
If Twyford is a representation of the new Labour Greens Winston thinking – what dreamers.
God help New Zealand – nobody else will.

  HNZ can have a 2nd arm to their servicing arm.
  That builds a factory making 2-4 bed kitset homes, fully insulated and plumbed.
  3rd team acquires plots and a regional building team preps the site and puts them up, when delivered.
  
  HNZ can run apprenticeships at factory and regional teams so building capacity for expansion to 1000 units a year countrywide.
  
  National should have done this already, instead they got rid of houses/units as usual.

    Transferring houses to social services does not reduce stock, I assume most houses were removed and placed elsewhere when the land like in Glen Innes was to have intensified housing, again not removed from stock numbers.
    Houses can still be bought in Taumarunui for under 100k, for example and tenants are plentiful and all services available. No need to live in Auckland.

  Funnily enough James Shaw was asking supporters for “$100” each because if everyone contributed that amount then that would wipe their debt.
  
  Aside for wondering how much their debt is (and therefore how many supporters paying $100 would be required), I realised that $100 is an impossibly big ask for a Party that supposedly represents those less fortunate (eg those on benefits or working poor etc).
  
  So if anything it reinforces although the Greens are red watermelons (and would dare not even think about working constructively with National for example), their main supporters appear to be the urban elite and well-off, who could afford $100. If so, what a disconnect between their Party activist base and the majority of the public that vote for them!

I started to look into the background of the new ‘Ministers’ and after the following two I gave up. It makes great reading if you’re interested in the history of committee representation in NZ or bed time fairy tales about the mythical land of Utopia.

Ron Mark – Apparently failed to be accepted into the SAS. Spat the dummy and became a mercenary for a Muslim army in the Middle East. This diesel mechanic is in charge of the officers and ‘other ranks’ of the armed services. Reminds me of a corporal who failed as an artist and lead some other armed services over in Europe.

Tracey Walker – Mixed up Christian, if you quote Christianity you can’t bow to the pagans – From her maiden speech. “I draw the attention of the House to the message of Corinthians 13, verse 11: “When I was a child, I talked like a child; I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child.”

    Ron Mark is okay. He joined the Army as a 16-year-old and rose to be an officer.
    
    What’s wrong with being a mechanic in the Army? It’s better than being a PR in the Army. In NZ, unlike in some overseas services, such as the US Navy, our PRs tend to be commissioned from fuck-all background. Who gives ex-PRs in the armed services a hard time?
    
    As for Softail’s comment about Mark being a little guy – how relevant is that? Remember Audie Murphy, one of America’s most decorated soldiers of World War 2? He was too short to get into the US Marines. Think of the little Gurkhas, and of the short Japanese infantrymen who fought so hard on Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
    
    Mark later served in the Sultanate of Oman, in a support unit for the Oman army and its special forces.
    
    Apart from sniping at Mark’s Army service, there are pot shots at a blot when he was a kid. That doubtlessly will be outed yet again on Kiwiblog any time soon.
    
    It’s tough stuff to throw at someone, but I suspect some of the throwers were on the receiving end when Mark used Parliamentary privilege to to a bit of roasting himself. They should be careful unless they don’t dredge up that stuff.
    
    The SAS and its overseas equivalents are full of brave, fit, capable people, but there are many others in various armed services who warrant the admiration of civilians. The most obvious of these to me are the cool-brave types who defuse IEDs in Afghanistan, as they did earlier in Northern Ireland.

  Ron Mark – says he went to officer training school – but as far as I know he was never commissioned. Maybe he thinks we don’t know the difference between NCO’s and fully commissioned guys – certainly never mentioned much about his further career in the army apart from the fact he left because he was deemed unsuitable for the SAS.
  
  Expect the Chiefs will be having a good old chuckle about his rather vague CV. How embarrassing for him when he finally has to front up to the guys who were real officers in their respective services and who are probably poring over his army records right now.

        Absolutely, I couldn’t agree more, it was more a case of wondering how Ron Mark would fare if his records were read.
        My father was a school teacher, and a prolific ‘writer’, letters to the editor etc ‘in the day’.
        I would never have questioned his level of literacy, but the army did. I found it odd and yes harsh.
        I discussed the information with contemporary relatives, some of whom were teachers, they were surprised also. Just anecdotal.

After police told him there was a reward of $20,000 for assistance in capturing Susan Burdett’s murderer, Pora claimed he knew who committed the crime. He said he drove two Mongrel Mob members to the house and acted as lookout while they went inside.

Pora didn’t give the names of the Mongrel Mob members, but when police put two names to him, he went along with these suggestions. Later on, police determined the two Mongrel Mob members both had alibis and their DNA did not match that found in the body. The DNA came from Malcolm Rewa but police didn’t learn that until four years later.

After claiming he was at the scene, Pora was held for the next four days during which he was questioned about the case for 14 hours – without a lawyer. During the course of this drawn out interview, much of it recorded on video, he frequently changed his story about what happened.

After initially claiming he acted as a lookout for the two Mongrel Mob members, he later said he went into the house after “hearing noises and seeing the crimes being carried out”. Still later, he said he held Burdett down by the arms while the others raped her. Pora was subsequently charged with Burdett’s rape and murder.

In 1995, once Pora was in prison, he provided three more names to police after they offered him another $50,000 and said they would help when he came up for parole.

Pora is convicted on this confession, but after a second trial when semen found on the murdered woman’s body came from serial rapist Malcolm Rewa, Pora is again found guilty.

In 2015, the Privy Council in London quashed Pora’s conviction, apparently relying largely on the evidence of a forensic psychologist.

In June last year, the freed Pora gets $2.5 million compensation and a Government apology. But he wants more – adjustment for inflation – and now he gets it for the 20 years he spent in prison.

This is the fairy tale of a Welfare State. You may have the misfortune to be born backward, become a thief, and lie that you committed a serious crime.

You will spend 20 years in prison, but that will save you from a highly likely fate of booze, drugs, crime, and early death.

Eventually the justice system will make you a millionaire, and the grovelling media will have already made you Victim of the Year.

Unlike those who work and save and scrape for their old age, your pot of gold will be inflation protected.

Now go to sleep children, and pray thanks you were born in such an enlightened country, where it’s not always honest that pays. Remember, though, that it always pays to have a really good story ready for the police.

  Dunno where you are going with this one Jack, Pora spent 20 years in jail because of lazy police work and useless defense representation and as such has won the “justice” lottery.
  If the cops had told him to fuck off and stop wasting their time instead of taking the easy road to wipe a crime off their books, no doubt he would have been in and out of prison for other crimes in that 20 years, maybe the 2.5 mil works to to be the cheaper option for the long suffering taxpayer.

  More than 100 years ago W S Churchill reminded the H o Coms that a nation is judged by the fairness and integrity of its legal system, and treatment of those accused by the Crown.

I was looking into a Local Government contract with an incoporated society and a local board member is the manager, but with incorporated societies you can opt to not declare the trustees or disclose your financial accounts and so this organisation has chosen not to. I think this is wrong and would like to see Societies have to publish their accounts and trustees especially if they receive any public money. The Local Board Member also declares he is a trustee of a charity. That charity has had $15million dollars of council revenue, but has failed to publish accounts for 2 years and the last accounts they filed were unsigned, unaudited and incomplete. When the issue was raised with Council said they weren’t concerned and I got the brush off.

  The charities commission should be looking into it if they have failed to report for two years. From the charity services website:

    Yep. Tried them. Nothing happens. They take at least three years before they talk deregistration. And then the missing accounts don’t get published. And the trustees walk off wihtout consequence. Also, in the case i was looking at the last set of accounts are “in” even though they are incomplete and not audited as required.

Can someone please enlighten me about the way child poverty is measured. Apparently it relates to the number of children living with families on less than 60% of the median income.

Because this is obviously a relative measure, does this mean that the only way to permanently eliminate child poverty, as it is currently measured, is to discourage low-income families from having children????

Surely child poverty should be measured by objective tangible items that are lacking, such as lack of access to good schooling, not being fed wholesome nutritious meals etc….

Or have I missed something here?

This petrol tax in Auckland is an absolute joke.

Listening to Twit-ford on the radio this morning, talking about rail links out west and to the Airport, and apparently I have to help pay for it? Why?

I live in Whangaparaoa. I work in Devonport. I have to be at work by 8.00 am.

The journey planner that is the least inconvenient to me will ensure that, should I elect to take public transport, I will be spending over $300.00 a month, assuming that I make all my multiple connections, (3 busses in the morning, two busses and a ferry from Devonport to Auckland in the evening FFS!), all so I can leave home before 6 every morning and get home after 6 every night. Should I wish to run any form of errand to or from work, as I often do, that will be impossible. A time saving 5 or so minutes out of my way, or a simple lunchtime back visit will be nigh on impossible.

There are no transport enhancements available to anyone who lives north of the bridge! Unless a sudden change of heart extending the dedicated bus lanes to Silverdale or Orewa is planned.

I have the joy of driving through two of the most congested roadways in Auckland DAILY, being Whangaparaoa Road, and Lake Road, Devonport.

If any of my petrol tax was going there, I’d be happy, but it isn’t, so I’m not!

I thought I’d have another look at some more of our new leaders and see what skills they bring to the table. Ok I thought, what’s a challenging portfolio. Health I thought!

So I see we have Dr. David Clark in the position of Minister of Health. Ok, at least he may be an expert from the profession. That’s ok by me!

But…on further investigation I find that he is a Dr. of Divinity. That is, religion or healing by miracles. Ok, breath deeply (brown paper bag inhale-exhale inhale…) Maybe he’s bringing experience to the role because of his links to the poor and their afflictions.

Left school, went to Uni, went to another Uni overseas, came back went to Uni, went to Church for three years then straight into Labours ranks.

Sound of weeping could be heard from Brito’s room.

A week on from the annointment of the new PM, she’s demonstrating that she has form when it comes to u-turns on policy etc. or, in other words, she’s telling porkies. By the time 3 years is up, it would be great to review all those u-turns – I haven’t got time to keep a record, but it would be great if someone had the drive to do so. So, her promises of ‘transparency’ have fallen well and truly flat and it’s only 24 hours since the documents were signed. I think the nickname of “Flipper” is well and truly apt under the circumstances. She changes the narrative alarmingly often. How can anyone have confidence in her to sail a steady ship? It appears that ship has already struck bumpy waters…….

    You could be overreacting slightly.
    The story has come from a letter from the Clinton campaign law firm confirming to an enquiry that they took over the funding to Fusion of the Investigation into Trump Russia links which had been originated by one of Trump’s primary opponents, as yet unnamed. Once Trump had the nomination Fusions original client had no interest in the work any longer so they approached the only other possibility. It is hardly surprising that the Clinton campaign would agree. The campaign have released the Law Firm from the client attorney privilege and have urged any other earlier clients of Fusion to do the same.
    Nothing here suggests the Clinton campaign had any contact with Russia. Quite the reverse if they had to pay a spy to dig things up rather than just asking the Kremlin for the details.
    
    There may be something in the Uranium thing somewhere, even though it is years ago. Not much to this except to confirm that Politics can be a grubby business.

Latest threat reported from Climate Change: new diseases forecast for NZ (presumably malaria, dengue fever, leprosy, even hook worm and syphilis-immunising yaws).

NZ thus needs “to build resilience” into the population. Work-life balance and good thinking are some of the revolutionary approaches being advocated.

Perhaps global warming believers should instead just advise us plebs to think of the advantages: cheap bananas, pineapples in the back yard, chocolate from Northland cocoa pods, home-grown nose candy, orange groves in Southland, siestas ….
