      The coalition that has over 50% will be the one that forms the government.
      National manged just 46% and because they were seen to be arrogant and entitled no other party wanted to join them which is hardly surprising with the way they treated Peters.
      You can’t undermine and ridicule the man and then expect him to roll over after that.
      National lost and it was their stupid fault, or more to the point,Stephen (pretty legal) Joyce’s fault.

  Peter Dutton, Minister for Immigration and Border Protection since 2014 during an interview yesterday said that if Ardern persists in her persistence then Australia will withdraw ALL privileges New Zealanders enjoy, and upgrade the requirement arrivals from NZ must apply for a Special Category Visa (subclass 444) (SCV) on arrival in Australia, subject to meeting certain health and character requirements. So to provide the humanitarian outreach to 150 people will cause great inconvenience to 500,000 New Zealanders each year, every year. This is a repeat of Helen Clark’s amnesty for 9000 overstayers which precipitated the withdrawal of welfare and support services to kiwis arriving in Australia post 2001.

    The TARGETED removal of the Blue tick can be seen as a softening in traditional opposition to such efforts and to the OIC, in order to curry favor with the Islamic world.
    
    In 2009 the United Nations forum passed resolutions condemning “defamation of religion” as a human rights violation. Currently the resolutions are non binding…

      There was nothing in EAD_TWO’s post about supporting ISIS; it was about bigotry directed at immigrants and women.
      
      As for the ISIS point you brought up out of nowhere: The uncouth but bewildered Trump probably has no idea about what he supports or doesn’t support, so we’ll leave him out of it. What is certain is that Obama and Hillary Clinton certainly supported ISIS in Syria, and so did Bill O’Reilly and the other loudmouths at Fox, as did the “liberal” CNN, MSNBC and the main networks. There is about as much open and enlightened discussion in the mainstream U.S. media as there was in Soviet Russia.
      
      And some of your posts about people on the right, or National, are pretty hateful.
      
      I report their (often pretty hateful) comments and actions. I’m just as angry about the “left”, and Labour, as I am about National.
      
      Much as I despise right wing commentators, I despise woolly-minded “liberals” even more….

        I believe in human rights for all people, justice, the rule of law, free speech, a decent health system, free education, a safe and efficient transport infrastructure, clean water, etc. My views are solidly mainstream and in line with the vast majority of the public.

    Is any body else seriously concerned about Winston Peters in the direction of his observed physical and mental state ?
    From watching him as close as possible in Parliament yesterday he obviously looks as though he has a plan – or is away with the fairies, besides an absolute hate for the National Party and all that they stand for.
    His inane grinning at nothing, his smiling (leering) looks towards Cindy would give a Psychiatrist cause to ponder at his aged mental faculties. It may be his medication.
    Previously his hands have been very shaky when he has spouted his vitriol against anybody in Parliament. He has to hold on to something.
    Or is he being very clever for whatever reason only he knows.
    Being of a similar age I am aware of not only my of frailties both physical and mental and those of many friends of our age.

Couldn’t believe my luck ,there were the two clowns Ardern/ Peters back from meddling in other sovereign nations afffairs.
Paula Bennet was running rings around Winston Peters wee girl Jacinda. Wee Jacinda was out of her depth with her answers. Paula wanted to know why the Parental Leave of 26 weeks could not be split between either parents like 13 weeks each.
In desperation Winston Peters little girl Jacinda,looked to her sugar daddy Winston Peters.
Sugar daddy Peters sneered and barked out just another type of arrogant answer, which is all he has ever given to NZ since being in Parliament for 40 years. . Then wee Jacinda was allowed to parrot Sugar Daddys comments. Both of them will be known as the jokes that keep giving,every time they try to bluff and lie their way through the next parliamentary term of “maybe” three years.

Trevor Mallards true colours as speaker have come to the surface. It has not helped that so far that National has not yet got anything solid to attack the government with. Mallard however is currently a joke. He forgot the order of business, his robe still keeps falling off, he now enters the chamber from a side door and has changed the prayer to one in maori. It is strange as he is a very compentent politician and has been around for years. And yippee my email with the oral questions arrived on time.

Interesting watching Question Time yesterday. Gerry Brownlee has obviously been given info by Australia about the undesirability of the Manus island “refugees”and asked Winston lots of questions. Winston getting very sniffy at the end but the most fascinating part was that Cindy , who had been at questions at the start, was MIA for the Manus island questions. can’t she stand the heat?

        Hugh , I read about the Bill Gates development yesterday. I agree it is interesting but we do not have land available at that price ( even if it is based on all the US$80 mill being spent buying the land). The US$80 mill has to be effectively seed capital. The final cost will be massive.
        Do we have investors around to do a project that was say 1/4 the size –I don’t think so unless you invite a lot of Chinese property developers into it?

        The housing affordability issue really is a ‘nonsense issue’ particularly when the creators of the modern housing production industry, Bill & Alfred Levitt, just after WW11, were supplying new 80 square metre homes on 700 square metre lots for about $US8,000 (about $US100 per square metre building area) to sole income families on about $US3,500 per annum… about 2.3 times annual household incomes (median multiple).
        
        Just after WW11 there were massive shortages of expensive building products … to the extent the Levitts bought forests and nail factories to ensure they didn’t have supply disruptions to producing about 40 new homes a day.
        
        A decade or so later … thanks to another great American entrepreneur Malcom McLean creating the modern container industry, dramatically lowering transportation costs and creating greater global competition … we have a growing glut of increasingly affordable products …

        It was all very ideological and tedious.
        
        Rather amusingly, McShane described Palmer and Upton as two of the finest minds to have graced the New Zealand Parliament !
        
        We are, in an essential long-winded and evolutionary way (with the consent of the governed), pragmatically sorting out today, the mess those guys created in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s.
        
        I was in the thick of it through that era as well … and learned many important lessons out of it.

I was a commercial property development practitioner myself for many years and the President for the South Island Division of the Property Council for the first part of the 1990’s. I didn’t come down in the last shower … if you get my drift.
    
    The industry guys will need to understand North America fast … if they are interested in commercial survival.
    
    Perform or perish.
    
    By our development / construction guys getting focused on driving down costs to REAL MARKET levels … as is the current case in much of North America … is the best help the current Government has in achieving its housing aspirations.
    
    Indeed … the Governments survival is dependent on this happening … and they know it.
    
    My sense is that the current Government (unlike the last one) will be doing everything it can to remove the barriers to the development and construction of affordable housing by the private sector.

      NB. House prices in the USA are not performing ( in terms of affordability) any better than elsewhere.

  The reports that I have read suggest the boar had been killed very recently, so I’m not sure that a “rotten meat” explanation works.
  Also, this is all supposed to have happened within 30 minutes or so of ingesting the meat (if that’s really the problem) which seems a very quick (and severe) reaction in terms of most of the standard food poisonings that I know of.
  Whatever it is, like you I wish them a safe and speedy recovery.

Has anyone told Cindy and Grant that if you piss off your biggest trade partner they can take all sorts of very subtle retaliatory actions. Like making sure your exporters get a hard time at the border but all within the “Rules” of course. Like making sure Kiwi companies dont win tenders for Govt and non Govt contracts.

  It took me longer than 2 hours to read and digest this, and to be honest, a lot of the economics terminology was over my head – but I could grasp the principles of what he is saying and the picture is scary.
  
  From what I can see in our own country, I would say that, apart from the bleak state of Australian mining, the picture for our own economy is very similar – especially in the overtaxation, housing madness, foreign money laundering and lack of engineering & technology focus in NZ.
  
  I urge anybody who is interested in NZ’s future to read this excellent piece because there are some striking parallels between our two countries and we had better wake up fast.

        Although I found Jews pretty OK (but not super friendly) in Israel, it can say that some of the most arrogant people I’ve met around the world have been Jews.
        
        On a Greek beach for example, I saw a couple reading their book backwards and I could see it was in Hebrew. Trying to be friendly (I had just visited Israel) I greeted them with ‘shalom’ when they passed. They looked at me with disgust, like I had just vomited on their towels and stalked off without saying a word.
        
        That was the most extreme… but I’ve noticed similar traits with others.
        
        Having said this, I still think that pogroms, banishment and gas chambers are a bit of an overreaction to unfriendly interpersonal skills 😀

  You are mixed up RC. I left Israel in 1984 after 12 years of relative calm and peace after the arse kicking which was delivered to the peaceful Muslim nations in the Yom Kippur war of 73.
  
  Relative calm belittles the massacres which continued as the peaceful Muslims continued to cross the border and kill children and the defenceless. July 4 was a memorable party when the Entebbe raid went ahead and freed innocent travellers. However it didn’t stop the concept of death by a thousand cuts as mortar fire rained down and road side bombs killed people going about their business.
  
  Go to a desert sometime and imagine an impossible dream, turning the sand into a land of fruit trees and food. The Israelis did that and continue to do that. The Muslims sit there wanting to turn it back into sand but first soaking it in blood after killing all of the Jews. How do you think that’s going to end?
  
  Danny Katz’ murder in 83 made me think it was time to go home, but I went to Rhodesia instead, which proved to be equally compelling for a number of reasons.
  
  There we extreme Jewish reactions to the Christian churches and to the continued occupation of the Jewish Holy Lands and that was carried out by idiots and the narrow minded.

        Of course RC you still haven’t got the point. There are extremists in all religions and those people will always create tensions and strife. That is their way (Jew or Muslim).
        
        But the orthodox Jews believe that all Jews need to be in Israel, there will be a red calf born etc etc and you know who will turn up. However, their belief is based on a fable and they spend their time breeding red calves and trying to get everybody back in Israel.
        
        Let this continue because they are clearly mad.

Parental leave is just a big bludge fest in my opinion but if we must go down this road here are some baseline eligibility rules that I believe need to be applied.
1.Applicants cannot be fat or ugly.
2.Applicants cannot be regular shoppers at Pak n Save.
3.Applicants must not live in Mt Roskill.
4.Female applicants must not have facial hair or wear tights if their bum is bigger than a small car.
5.Applicants must be able to prove the relationship that resulted in conception had a duration of more than two hours.
