Poverdy, poverdy, wherefore art thou poverdy? We are bereft of poverty stories since the election.
What can we do to fix this poverdy.?
Can we call it “Progressive poverdy”,?
Cindy sprinkles her fairy dust around and it has gone?

There must be no poverdy anymore if this clusterfuck of a govt can afford to give $3 million of taxpayers cash and make room for 150 families in one foul swoop. No more homelessness, no more hungry kids, this govt has in 3 weeks fixed the problems that they were accusing the Nats of ignoring for the past 9 years.
Aren’t we lucky to have such a caring and efficient team in charge. Jacinda, Robbo, and the drunken dwarf are our saviours. I take back all the hurtful and unkind things I have said about them all.
Call me a “Progressive” old white guy and all will be good with our world // ??

  If Judith Collins had been ‘allowed’ to partake in the pre-election debates, I’m certain she would have wiped robertson away and backed Steven Joyce nicely. A clear Nats win was what was needed, none of this loser-winnie-coalition bullsh*t. Collins could have been the catalyst. Look at her in the house now. Unstoppable.

What are you going to do about it? Buy another keyboard when you wear the other one out? Block your ears and hope it goes away. Our Lorde continues to impress with her music-career milestones, but are there any other old music enthusiasts out there who think there is “the next Joni Mitchell” inside her trying to break out of the shackes of mainstream pop?

In fact I wish she could get out of the unhelpful company she is keeping, like that of Taylor Swift, and become Joni’s late-life protege while she is still with us.

        I seem to have been misunderstood. I am 100% dismissive of contemporary teen-pop trash, and love good music same as you do. I am just suggesting that the contemporary commercial music machine may strangle potential on the rare occasion that it takes up someone who actually has it, and I am kindly suggesting that Lorde might just have potential that is being strangled.

        Even Clapton is an admirable, humble, realist who acknowledges his own debt to those who went before him, and that there is some things he can’t do on guitar, that they could. This is the case with most of the creators of enduring yet still-commercial music. They learn from, and absorb influences, from the geniuses of “non-commercial” music. For example, Billy Joel idolises Dave Brubeck. Clapton idolises Django Reinhardt. And so on.
        
        And in some cases, like Joni Mitchell doing Annie Ross’s “Twisted”, and Stevie Wonder doing Miles Davis numbers (on harmonica instead of trumpet), they dare to expose their own audiences to the well of genius from which they have drawn inspiration.

        I don’t listen to music that was never meant for my ears.
        Fifty years ago I thought contemporary pop music was the bees knees. The grey generation, as always, never understood the appeal and called it trash.

    I hate the “mainstream pop” machine with a passion. Generally the kids it takes up, don’t have the real musical talent that will result in enduring music, but there is a tragic possibility that they sometimes get, and destroy, real potential.
    
    All the creators of enduring pop music, started their careers at the bottom, playing local gigs, and worked their way up. There should be a law against ignorant kids being turned into overnight idols by a commercial machine, it always destroys them as human beings.

        I am being misunderstood here. I have always despised boy bands. If I am bitter about anything, it is all the talented musos in all genres at the local level all over the world, struggling through life, while a few no-talents are turned by a commercial machine, into uber-rich celebrity trash.

I love the symmetry in this story. The woman uses an illegal recreational drug at the start of the year and the police want to speak to her about it. She refuses to discuss it.

Then the #metoo avalanche starts and she jumps on the band wagon.

Then the police issue a warrant for her arrest and she finally hands herself in (two weeks later). Entitled cow.

Her excuse…’they’re just trying to shut me up’.

In the future western countries will reach a point where they are contributing 100 billion per annum to this UN scheme.
That’s right 100 billion pa.
This will then be distributed to poor countries by members like Nicaragua .
It is beyond belief that we have signed up to this accord.

  I actually wish (schaedenfreude like) that NZ now will get a “boat people” crisis. I have been saying for years that our “Defence” forces are so pitiful that they would be unable to prevent a well-organised, totally unarmed invasion.
  
  Don’t think it can’t happen – don’t think there isn’t enough money in people-smuggling to fund boats that are seaworthy enough to get here. In fact the biggest problem for this nefarious trade, would be taking a sufficiently circituous route around Aussie, to avoid being intercepted by them.
  
  I bet the Aussies are tempted to just let them past to teach us a lesson, if it wasn’t for their own long term interests (NZ being used as a stepping stone, etc)

She was elected to cut back on immigration. That’s what she ran on. Not to bring in the lowest quality immigrants she could find!

And as far as Labour supporters go, I suspect there are a range of views about the TPP.     That’s because it is a CENTRE right party, not a far right party. The reason there is no large resistance party in New Zealand is because most voters don’t support one. That’s the reason ACT can only manage to get one MP elected. Blaming National misses the point that they are in tune, more or less, with middle New Zealand. If you created a part that was a mix of libertarian economics and Christian conservatism it would not pass the 5% threshold.   The difficulty with Ardern’s comment is that she was NOT elected as Prime Minister. She was elected as MP for Mt Albert, but it was 33 members of the Labour Party caucus only who elected her as their leader.
  
  And if you want to get really technical, 64% of New Zealand voters did NOT vote for her to be PM, so her personal mandate is even less than that of Donald Trump.

On that subject I was at a function Thursday with a very senior FA official. As always he was very discreet however he communicated to my various statements with either a smile a nod or a rolling of the eyes.

  On a serious note, I’ve looked up and read about this Golriz Ghahraman since she has been mentioned here and, much as I disagree with greenism, I would say she’s a wonderful example of how the children of refugees can flourish in a new country.
  
  She got a degree at Oxford and her parents are both professional people. She’s a qualified barrister and I bet she got into politics to do some good (albeit with the wrong party).
  
  So can we stop tarnishing her with the pejorative label ‘refugee’ please, and recognise that all refugees aren’t useless criminals and paedophiles.

    Her family were asylum seekers rather then refugees – I listened to her maiden speech where she explained that her mother was a psychologist who would not agree to take the religious exams required in order to follow her chosen profession. So they flew to NZ via KL (where they landed, apparently shaking in their shoes in case they weren’t allowed to board their flight to Auckland).
    
    However, they did and were granted asylum – now the silly girl wants to bring in hordes of males who follow the ideology that she says her family fled from. Go figure.
    
    Can’t remember what she said her father did for a living other than he was involved in finance I was so stunned to learn about her mother or maybe she just said that to get brownie points.

    Winston revealed the BNZ, then government owned, taking a position against the government. It was serious, devious, illegal and involved our richest.
    Amongst other things, if I recall right, BNZ had secretly pledged the NZ government owned power grid as a security for a private loan in the USA. Winston was upheld by the Courts but the hatred of the establishment of him remains.
    
    Ultimately I believe he has become a victim of his office and the drinking that goes with it. Now he appears to have a serious health problem. Moodiness, temper, lack of reason, surliness, judgement–all aspects of loss of mental capacity or brain damage from a variety of illnesses affecting the aging. This can come on over a long number of years and be written off as “just Winston”. He should have retired at least at the end of the last season. His legal capacity to decide in the coalition negotiations has to be questioned.

  When free markets are working, you get bigger and better stuff costing less and less. When the free market has been sabotaged, it is perfectly consistent to get smaller, lower quality stuff costing more and more. This is the case in housing everywhere that you look at the evidence.
  
  This is why Atlanta has 600 people per square km and a house price median multiple of 3, and HK has 26,000 people per square km and a median multiple of 16+

    Auckland can’t infill to much, more the existing wastewater (sewerage/stormwater) systems can’t cope. To lay bigger pipes would mean digging up main roads, traffic ‘Kayous’. The system was reaching its limit ten years ago, thats why is leaking into the harbour and beaches will have to be closed after rain. The problem with ‘Green field’ sites is the processing systems wont be able to cope with the additional crap. Option pump it out to sea. Can see the Greens liking that…no

On behalf of the considerable majority of New Zealanders I’d like to apologise for our Prime Minister. Her petulant meddling in your sovereign affairs both before and after the election is an embarrassment to us, and almost certainly an affront to your good judgement.

Her foolish actions do nothing to build on the strong relationship that both countries have enjoyed through centuries of co-operation in trade, defence, shared interests on the world stage, and through the on-field lessons we have dished out to each other.

Rest assured that we do not want her as Prime Minister, elected as she was to lead a coalition of disparate, losing parties each with their own agenda for power.

We are hoping that this coalition fails soon, and the experience to-date suggests that this may well be the case. Meantime can we plead for your tolerance while we sort out our political circus.

The wake-jumping bill gives Winston more power than he should have, and one can already see what that does.

That the “obtained” email and caucus briefing note on the proposed horse-trading was from Green MP Golriz Ghahraman is somewhat ironic as she is possibly the one mostly likely at the moment to jump waka on principle.

Ardern, Winston’s choice, after the most extensive horse-trading to date in New Zealand political history, enforcing 70 or so changes or eliminations in Labour / NZF policy, altering what people voted for in a way more extensive than any waka-jumper is likely to ever achieve.

Currently relaxing at a work BBQ where there are around 20 adults of both sexes.

Our dear PM has been the centre of a discussion and its interesting to hear that she is not at all popular. In fact any fairy dust that she was sprinkling around a few weeks ago has disappeared and many did not believe she was going to last the distance.

Although no one discussed who they voted for it was obvious to me that out of the group only a
couple who were females supported her. The concerns were the promises to throw cash around, breaking election promises and trying to dictate how Australia should sort out the Manus Island thugs.

The general feeling is that Ardern is a nasty little madam and has an adgenda thats it’s all about her. She has been quick to learn about the baubles of office from Peters.

Several were laughing that the host on News Talk ZB who I think was Tim Beveridge suggested last night that Ardern should shut up and mind her own business.

That surprised me as I always thought he was a lefty.

  Nobody discussed local politics with the expats because they didn’t know who to trust.

  I’d like to believe her nebulous pontifications on the hermit kingdom were just the idealistic thoughts of a naive dreamer but given the two H’s pulling the strings of the coalition, this will have been a carefully considered play. They would be well aware that the dysfunctional UN has zero chance of initiating any meaningful action against the DPKR, with this weeks vetoing of action against the vile swine Assad making that abundantly clear. So she is perfectly safe saying NZ would join a UN led intervention, knowing Russia, China and its economic serf state countries would immediately block it.
  
  She knows it will never happen but can pretend to the minority who voted for her that she is ‘one tough leader chick, not to be messed with’. Cheap sabre rattling, safe in the knowledge she’ll never be called on it.

  That’s always worried me too nasska. When I see fat brown slugs with naked arse’s dancing in front of distinguished visitors to our sceptered isle I cringe with utter embarrassment. LEARNING FROM THE IRISH 2007 HOUSING CRASH … THE SEVERE COSTS OF MULTIPLE STRETCH …

It’s high multiple lending that ‘does in’ the Banks and their customers … as they learned with the Irish housing bubble collapse in 2007.

The New Zealand Banks are in no hurry to repeat the 2007 Irish experience … when the housing bubble burst there … putting all its Banks to the wall and requiring bailouts exceeding 70 billion euro or about $NZ 109 billion.

Irish housing across its metros on average went from 4.7 times annual household income in 2007 to 2.8 a few years later … refer the schedule of Demographia Surveys at http://www.PerformanceUrbanPlanning.org .

Australia is currently 5.5 times … New Zealand 5.9.

Why should the New Zealand and Australian Banks be more resilient than the Irish ones ?

What was the capital base of the Irish Banks in 2006 and 2007 ?

If a 4.7 unweighted median multiple across its metros blew the Irish banks out of the water, how come ours are supposed to survive 5.5 and 5.9 respectively with (in New Zealand’s case) a skinny capital base of just $NZ30 billion and a $NZ1 trillion (CoreLogic estimate) housing market with in excess of half it bubble value ?

Following the bust, the Central Bank of Ireland found it was high income multiple lending that did the most damage to the Irish Banks … and it imposed a general lending cap of 3.5 times annual household incomes.

A year earlier the Bank of England had capped at 4.5 times.

In normal housing markets house prices should not exceed 3.0 times annual household income, requiring sensible mortgage loads of about 2.5 times (Demographia Survey).

The days of housing inflation are over. That’s for sure.
