    I think he may have discovered that his Ministerial office comes with a Cornucopia, also known as a free liquor cabinet. Like the Horn of Amalthea it can never be emptied, no matter how much he takes out of it.
    The problem he has is that the room also contains Pandora’s box. It is full of all the promises the Government parties made before the election and which he is now supposed to find the money to honour.

This story is worth checking out: A teaching assistant named Lindsay Shepherd at Canadian Laurier University was hauled before her superiors after one of her students complained because she showed a video clip in class of a televised debate about the use of pronouns for trans-gendered people.

She was basically bullied into tears for having the nerve to neutrally show both sides of the debate to her class.

Unfortunately for her Orwellian professors, she recorded the whole thing and went to the media with it – beautifully exposing the bonkers Marxist identity politics that as infected academia and now the university is getting properly spanked for it.

    You are one of those that thinks that there is no God. So you may have missed my point. Jokes aside, I personally think aetheism is a degenerate dead end for culture and morals, so seeing God thrown out of parliament cuts me pretty deep. Not to mention indicates a turn for the worse for NZ as a whole in the metaphysical sense.

      Er, yes they do, in their own heretical way. They don’t believe the trinity of Christian orthodoxy (one God, three Persons), but rather are tritheists (three Gods, three Persons) in the first instance.
      
      I say “in the first instance” as they are ultimately polytheists, believing in multiple Gods over many Universes, of which they one day hope to be one. As per Brigham Young: “As Man is, God once was. As God is, Man may become”. As per Young and his predecessor, the founder of Mormonism, Joseph Smith, polygamy was an indefensible and “unchangeable” means to attain future Godhood. The belief is that in future, as Gods they will service a harem of spiritual wives, giving birth to spirits who will become people in the Universe they will create. Hence some Mormon fundamentalists still practice it.
      
      In contrast, the orthodox and biblical Christian doctrine of the incarnation entails the Son of God (who is fully God) taking to himself full humanity in the form of Jesus of Nazareth. So God humbles himself and unites the two natures in one person, not, as in Mormonism, humanity shedding its nature and rising to Godhood.
      
      Mormons may be heretics, but they should not be the subject of false witness. 😉

      I have no problem with a dedication at the beginning of Parliament. The formal inclusion of the concept god In leadership of this country is an endorsement of religion by the highest power in the land . Such ideas hold no place in the rational process of governance over those who dont share in the belief system.
      Those who are so disposed can personally add an incantation to their own personal belief if so disposed.
      
      Why do you think it is ok for your religion to be invoked in the governance over a majority secular country?
      
      How would you feel if we demanded a statement pointing out there is no god in the dedication of parliament?

Is anybody like me concerned about the Pike River Supreme Court decision where I understand that they said that Whittall should have been prosecuted but the families got $3.5 million instead of proceeding.
This money was in addition to the other believed over $27 million.
Were the families asked by their Lawyers and presumably agreed to that course of action.
Take the money – yes.
Why did they say no, we want a prosecution (which may well have included one Health and Safety Manager – one Rockall as a major witness).
We will not accept this blood money did they say.
Were they just being greedy ?
Or are we still in West Coast politics.
Assuming all that when are Peters and Angry going in to get the men.
Never, so keep digging Monk and cohorts which includes Mrs Rockall.

    This. I’m surprised any court would rule this was acceptable. Compensation should be a mitigating factor in sentencing at most. It’s even worse when the money didn’t go to the victims. The victims are dead and the money was just paid to other people who happen to be related to them.

  See my detailed posts yesterday. Up until December 2013, compensation/gifts totalled $28 million +.
  The dissatisfied few wanted more, and to get that they had to sue and win against:
  1. The mine owning company
  2. The Crown via Solid Energy
  3. Police
  4. Conservation Dept.
  5. Labour Department (now Work and Safety ),
  and
  5. Anyone else with a remote connection to the incident.
  
  Any “win” would have gone/will go appeal, so main bennies are lawfare practitioners.
  
  Given that contributory negligence was more than likely (gas detectors switched off, cigarette buts for starters), the case would still be one of lawfare … with no end in sight. As successful prosecution is now unlikely. but of evidence of negligence is found on re-entry, it could just as easily be evidence of illicit miner behaviour. So, “be careful what you wish for”.
  
  The grossly be-whisked lawfare practitioner, Hampton, may have had other motives. But I doubt that he acted pro bono.

Seems I owe a congratulations to Mr Hootton. I finally his Monday morning chat with Ryan & Williams. It sounded like he has already taken off the rose tinted specs. So well done.

One point he made & I agree with him, is that despite the positive announcements 3 weeks ago, the conferences, the Paid Paternity Leave, the Pike River reverse gear, & $50 a week for students et al, the government is now in a state of drift & actually don’t have a clue what to do next.
I think he is right, this was demonstrated this morning by a National party warning that Parker needs to get on & do something about the TPP agreement, but Parker somehow thinks he’ll have a signed up deal early next year by doing nothing. Yeah right?
Hooton’s suggestion was that they need to get on with their mini budget, and get a time line for it. I agree, but equally it is clear the omni-shambles (word not on Poliburo’s list) don’t have a clue & any mini-budget will be a poorly cobbled together document that will be picked apart in no time. So in the end, the first 100 days will look like the ultimate yawn.

  There will be other examples worthy of exemption as well. The beauty of the present GST, is that there are NO exemptions. The compliance costs are very low and easy to understand. Leave it as it is.

The big advantage of our scheme is its simplicity in that we don’t have to worry about whether food is prepared or not etc. Far be it from me to comment on the state of holysheet’s orifices, but if you exempt one item then there will be demands for umpteen other items to be treated in the same way; where to stop? A dozen or so exemptions will be costly to administer, no doubt confusing and open to rorts and could lead to an overall increase in GST or other taxes to compensate.

There are many storys’ like this all over NZ.
Here is another one,not a good read if your are a NZ born family and the right to be here.
Came across a young mother with a husband and four young children. They are not beneficiaries. Husband works to put food on the table.
The family of four young children consists of Three wee boys and one wee girl. Sadly one of the boys is of special needs,another is suffering from a rare birth defect. The other two children are fine.
All the children are from same parents and are NZ born.
The point of the story is besides what has been mentioned is, the whole six of the family are living with a relative in cramped accomodation in a house in Porirua.
They have been on the waiting list for a State House for a long time. Message from the taxpayer funded State House Hierarchy is their needs are not acute.
Next door to them a a Taxpayer owned State House became empty. They got in touch with the we know best crowd at Housing Corporation.
Their hope were dashed when they were informed the empty State House and taxpayer owned was for some “refugees” who were arriving shortly.
To make it even worse for the NZ born family of six living in cramped accomodation and told their situation did not make them more eligible than refugees. Was to see the Red Cross employees arriving with brand new furniture for the refugees.
Maybe a fore-runner for some of the asylum seekers that could arrive in NZ anytime soon.
Whatever happened to the adage .”Charity begins at home”.

Yesterday we had the announcement of the Tax Working Group chair and terms of reference. This was something that has broad impact in New Zealand for most adults so you would expect this to get wide, prominent coverage.

Any guess as to what the lead story on NZ Herald’s website was?

Nope. What we got at the top was an article about a teacher who was dismissed for showing a class a video discussing female orgasm. The tax story was buried down in the Business section well down the page.

I don’t believe that this is any sort of conspiracy, just a sad reality of how our news media is no longer indistinguishable from clickbait trash.

Re the GST issue. As one who worked as a Chartered Accountant in the UK shortly after VAT was introduced and then successfully lobbied the Lange Government in 1986 to have no exemptions I can tell you this will be a problem. There will be much reclassifying on goods to make them fall under the exemptions whilst still marking them up with GST that becomes per profit.

I know this because it happened in the UK. I spent a good deal of my time arguing with Customs and Excise to get goods classified for a lower or exempt rate.

Its human nature. Our current GST system is held up as an exemplar around the world. Its a single rate no exemptions easy to collect and remit.

  If tampons etc are to be GST-free, why not handkerchiefs, toilet paper, nappies and sticking plaster as well? They all perform the same general function.
  
  And if we are going to make fruit and veg GST-free, we should include pizza. After all, pizzas are made from fruit and vegetable matter.

    Tampons are no different to any other personal hygiene matter – be it toothbrushes, handerkerchiefs, shavers or combs – if you don’t want to pay the tax then make your own!
    
    Since when was that part of the menstruation cycle so productive to be tax exempt anyway – as prenatal care is fully funded and for good reason!
    And besides – women have been putting off motherhood, to the point where tax payers money is increasingly being spent on the topic.

      The difference is that it only applies to women and is therefore unfair and the government must intervene to correct for all biological differences.
      
      So let’s spend millions a year to get rid of $1 per month of GST for women buying their $10 or so a month of menstrual needs.
      
      Of course by the same principle, men need about 500 more calories per day. That’s about 2 Big Macs, but thats per day. About 60 Big Macs per month. So, to be fair, we better take GST off food for men… but only for men.

  Lms you are so correct about GST v VAT. For my sins, I am also a NZ CA who tutored year 3 tax students at university while doing my Masters degree. With everything in life the Pomes made the VAT system complex with variable rates, zero rated and exempt products. All of which meant more sources of revenue for accountants/consultants & the need for even more complex accounting systems. A big waste of resource all for political rather than true economic benefit.

    There were some advantages in the exemptions of course.
    Children’s clothes were exempt from VAT although adult ones weren’t. The only practical way to make the decision was on size and the very shortest mini-skirts were exempt from VAT. This made a lot of women wear the really short ones to the delight of spotty faced adolescent boys.
    
    Unfortunately it led to a lot of really old women (those over 19) who should never have even looked at short skirts adopting the fashion.
    
    Or so I have been told.

  I was an ex UK VAT inducer on to a GST Committee in Wellington, and had to fight like hell to make those around on the Committee that there should be no exemptions.
  It took some time with a blackboard to explain the simplicity of it.
  We are looked upon as having the best GST of other countries in the world.
  I was asked to go overseas and explain it to the Finance Treasury of another SE Asian country.
  And ACC at the same time.

Yes, its the same with fruit and veges, if you take the GST off they will soon go up again as their prices change with the seasons and retailers will charge what the market will bear.

And even if lettuce were 20 cents each it would not make people stop buying KFC.

  That’s right. We could give fruit and veg away for free no questions asked (which is what food banks do anyway) and the fast food industry would see no reduction in trade whatsoever. It would be expensive, complicated and pointless to remove GST from selected items in the hope of a health benefit. Has not worked in Oz.

In 2009, Veitch was convicted on a charge of injuring with reckless disregard. The victim was his then partner, Kristin Dunne-Powell. The penalty included nine months of supervision, community work, and a $10,000 fine.

Veitch has paid for what he did in the eyes of the law. Shouldn’t he be allowed to get on with life?

Some Maori want offenders of their race taken out of the Western justice system and dealt with in a traditional way.

  Oakes was released after eight years when the when the Parole Board accepted battered women’s syndrome could be used as a defence.
  
  Oakes is now married and, it is to be hoped, happy and leading a decent life. She paid the penalty, and should now be allowed to get on with living – just as, in my opinion, Veitch should.

      Oakes’s efforts to avoid detection seem to have damaged her defence. Commentators say had she reported the death immediately the courts are likely to have treated her more kindly. However, her actions in burying Gardner rather than reporting his death did not earn sympathy, nor did her denial of any knowledge of Gardner’s whereabouts when interviewed by police soon after his death. Gardner’s family have participated in the media debate saying he was not the monster Oakes made him out to be.

        All human institutions evolve with public opinion.
        In many countries on this planet it is virtually impossible to convict a man for murdering his wife.
        There are plenty of vicious women out there who abuse their husbands, but when it comes down to it, males have the physical superiority over them.
        Also, extreme violence without provocation, stalking and home terrorism, are extremely rare except in males.

        If he wasn’t capable of walking away, he could have kicked the wall or a piece of furniture, but then he might have hurt his foot.

        BTW I know a creep who did the same to his partner, scarring her for life.

Bryce Edwards has covered Pike River well and, in doing so, has highlighted the NZ culture that doesn’t seek true social or human ‘progress’ but papers over and perpetuates all problems with ‘blood money’.

“…when a memorial was established at the mine, Lloyd Burr wrote passionately about the place and what had happened: “But there’s something in the air. It’s injustice. The memorial is a reminder of the injustices the families have had to endure. The injustice of the disaster, the injustice of way the attempted rescue was carried out, the injustice of the failed recovery efforts, and the injustice of failed re-entry bids.”

That’s all true. In every instance where a person is abused, bullied, harassed, and damaged/killed, the whole emphasis falls immediately onto expensive litigious argument between ‘sides’ (affordable to the few) which are ‘spun’ to the public at great cost to everyone, confidentiality clauses, and punitive payments. The original problem, harm caused, responsibility, and accountability are lost. Most frequently, after the punitive payment, those who caused the harm go on as before, continuing to inflict harm on new victims, and where the abused do ‘win’ the argument, they have lost most of their life and work with a reputation for not playing the appropriate ‘game’ which continues to cause them harm practically, psychologically, and reputationally.

We have a culture of bullying with no accountability, where the victims are censured for complaint or defense with a pretense that money makes up for everything in the few instances in which it is received.

If we’re ‘progressing’ anywhere, it needs to be towards truth, justice, and amelioration of the personalities, processes, and circumstances which caused the harm in the first place. Justice is not served by paying one victim; it’s served by ensuring the victim receives not only meaningful reparation, but sees those who caused the harm being prevented from inflicting the same harm on others – and those things should not only be done by society, but seen to be done.

    I used to agree with Bryce Edwards most of the time – until he appeared to abdicate rationality in favour of fawning over Jacinda and Labour – and there’s no doubt in my perception that he did exactly that.
    
    I’m not arguing for Labour or their policies. I don’t believe they’ll do any better on Pike River than National. But they have always been far better ‘spinners’ of information. It’s no surprise that their leader has a degree in ‘communications’. They are almost entirely based on empty rhetoric – unfortunately, it’s effective with many people.

Reading Tony Alexanders weekly overview was interesting this morning. Believes that peak cow (who knew that was a thing) is here and we will see a thinning of the heard due to environmental concerns and how farmers are polluting the environment.

I actually see the opposite happening with dairy herds increasing in size but farmers will manage effluent and runoff more effectively (as they are already starting to do). Definitely not linearly as market conditions will direct this. Unless of course, the Government sets a herd size. I can see the Greens pushing for this but not Labour, and not NZ First.

Interestingly he also talks about plant-based and lab-grown meats becoming a threat to the market. Whilst the former is here now, I see it as being something that will be a generational change. Millennials might go for it now, but I can’t see any of the others clamouring for it.

  This is the kind of crap that people write when they just read the headlines and don’t look into the details.
  
  Meat that is grown in labs is currently made out of “bovine fetal serum” ie. stuff that comes from aborted cows.
  
  That needs the output of many cows to make a kg of meat. That means you’d need a huge increase in herd size to produce any meat and the costs would go through the roof.
  
  And of course that would all end up being far less humane than the current way people make meat.
  
  While some day they might be able to lab-grow meat from vegetable inputs, that is not even something they’re doing in a lab yet, so it is probably a few decades away still.

  I read the tweet, and she does not engage in any victim blaming. She simply said that criminalisation did not prevent the women’s parents from becoming substance abusers. She did not blame the women for her experience. She sympathised with the women’s plight growing up, and did not call her a loser, or imply that she was. The tweet, and your interpretation of it, exist in two radically different realities.

Just for her knowledge, I am about to leave work and pick up my partner, and go take flowers to a female friend of mine who had a hernia operation yesterday (she is a cancer survivor so has spent a lot of time in hospital recently, including a mastectomy), then I am stopping to get my daughter tampons on the way home before going out to watch her play touch rugby.

So no, I am not going home to “beat my wife”, your opinion means as much to me as a dog shit in the grass – best avoided. In future keep your foul accusations to yourself.

    I was getting all agitated visualizing TV putting the boot into Kristen and then ABS started swearing at me which is usually a precursor to violence in my experience.
    So I made the jump to imagining ABS was going to take it out on his missus.
    It may seem unreasonable but I have seen so much horrible violence I do sometimes react this way.

        I read that in the Herald a few years ago AOR.
        It was the result of research done over there with battered women.
        I also have relations and friends who have told me of shocking instances of family violence in Fiji and the other islands and here in NZ.
        I can’t recall the source, but somebody suggested that Pacific Island males could be among the most violent in the world.
        It doesn’t mean they don’t have many good qualities also, but it is a big problem.

      It’s not a new thing either Nostra. We gave up on teaching our kids to come home from school with two shoes early on in the piece….later on the girls only had one pony each, the boy had a three year old moto-cross bike & we were too poor to travel overseas.

Hamilton City Councillor Mark Bunting offered to step down from a deputy committee chair role and released a written apology on Friday as the fallout of the week continued.

It began on Tuesday night, after Bunting forwarded the message in question to freelance journalist Angela Cuming. The message made a crude reference to Jesus and played on her last name.

“I am sorry,” Bunting said in a written apology reproduced in a Hamilton City Council press release on Friday afternoon.

“I will continue to serve the Hamilton community with honesty and am extremely motivated to win back the trust of those I have offended,” Bunting said in the written statement.

Australian research ‘has a Daversity problem’: Analysis shows too many men work mostly with other men

When Deb Verhoeven first saw the data, broken down into clusters of bright red and blue, she cried. A professor at the University of Technology Sydney, she was familiar with gender inequality, having spent years researching the issue in the film industry. Even so, it was a shock to look at the networks that routinely lock women out of research funding in Australia.

Using a process called social network analysis (SNA), which measures the relationships between people, Professor Verhoeven and her team created data maps of the men and women who received coveted academic grants in Australia, and who they worked with. They looked at Australian Research Council Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities (ARC LIEF) grants (2008-17) and National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) program grants (2003-18).

By analysing the gender of grant recipients, they found that men work mostly with other men. Even more surprising was how often men named Dave dominated across both grants.

This “social network analysis” malarkey doesn’t sound like proper research! How did Professor Verhoeven and her team manage to get the research proposal approved by the university ethics committee?

Pictures have emerged of the brand new accommodation arranged for 600 asylum seekers formerly detained on Manus Island….
Brand new sleeping, cooking and dining facilities are shown in the photos of the East Lorengau Transit Refugee Centre, the West Lorengau Haus and Hillside Haus.
The facilities shown in the photos are a far cry from the destroyed Manus Island centre where the detainees had been housed.
Buildings two storeys high can be seen in one of the photographs, surrounded by well-landscaped grounds.

One wonders if they need servants, house keepers, cleaners etc. while looking at the original block, though shabby, does not look like those “asylum seekers” guys did any thing to keep things in an ok order.
Fearing for their safety ??, but I doubt any native PNG would attack them when there are 100’s of them in that new centre.
Plus before they were moving in numbers as buses were supplied.

Sort of surprising that the native Manus Islanders had not moved in to make the most of those facilities. The homeless here would appreciate it. 🙂
