      The US media say it is the US contribution approved by Trump.
      Right now the US pays 22 % of UN budget, and 28 % of peace keeping. Many in the US want the share to be 1/190th. That will piss off the pantywaists !!

  Yes it’s a good move by the US and they are following through on their promise to take action against the UN following its condemnation of America for daring to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
  
  Nikki Hailey and Trump mean what they say and the other part of the story is the decision of NZ to vote against the US. I’m sure our government was anxious to signal its virtue.
  
  However America was taking names and rest assured this vote will come up when next we are wanting something from the Americans. Like a trade deal!
  
  Why we would want to sabotage our relationship with the US because of the situation in Israel, that has nothing to do with us, is a mystery to many?
  
  However our government is lead by social justice warriors who always perceive Israel as bad because they are white and represent western civilization.
  
  Could somebody please put adults in charge of our government who don’t sacrifice our vital economic interest for the sake of feckless virtue signalling in a situation that has nothing to do with us!
  
  AND YES I AM SHOUTING BECAUSE THIS IS JUST CRAZY!!!

    I agree, Scott. We have a Government whose leader and most of its senior office-holders are immature and naive. There will be an inevitable political price for NZ to pay, one that will be of the USA’s choice and timing. McCully’s recent folly targeting Israel at the UN was bad enough, but that did not involve such a direct slap in the USA’s face. Now, however, the Kids in our Capital have openly castigated a major allay (and the mainstay of our critical defence treaty) for implementing policies that the latter regards as being part of its national interests.
    
    All for no reason other than polish its own veneer of sanctimony, and to be seen to bloody the nose of the big power on the international block. My only real surprise is that Winston Peters, Deputy PM and Minister of Foreign Affairs, has allowed this travesty to slide through. Shame on you, Mr Peters.

    And I know of a primary school teacher who last year was asked by a parent (and Board of Trustee member) to remove a nativity set she had set up in her classroom. She didn’t and her principal supported her. She was trying to show her seven year olds about the meaning of Christmas but the BOT member is an opponent of religion in schools. Either Christmas is about Christianity or it isn’t. Can’t have it both ways.

        As I understand the situation it was just one BOT member expressing his own views to a young teacher and not an official Board decision. He obviously wasn’t happy to accept that there was a middle ground and he preferred to use his position to try and intimidate a young teacher. A bully.
        
        At the risk of upsetting some KBers there are no doubt some here that are very vocal in decrying others Christian beliefs with references to the ‘sky fairy’ etc but who are still in the midst of celebrating CHRISTmas. I am a non-believer by the way.

      A teacher who owns a nativity scene and brings it to school is quite likely to be a Christian and frame the historical explanation accordingly, even if carefully and subtly.
      
      Such historical explanation does not require a nativity scene and IMO teachers should take note of the ‘secular’ requirement of public education.
      
      Back in the 1980s there was a concerted effort by evangelicals to place their members into teacher colleges, as a stand against secular humanism. The initiative was not hidden among the faithful but it was carefully not on display in applications and interviews.
      
      Of course the candidates appeared excellent teaching prospects – clever, well presented, enthusiastic. And there was support from the faithful on the college admissions side as well.
      
      I often wondered how that progressed through the system, and more recently how the more recent wave of beliefs has impactedthat initiative. (I’m sure I don’t need to expand on those beliefs for this audience.)

The problem for me is that I want to listen to a classical radio station and the only choice is RNZ Concert with its persistently propagandist news bulletins. No bloody choice!

Israel and Iran are two of the most stable regional countries. Until the Shia/Sunni wars are ended (never..?) don’t expect peace. Now we have a further international dimension: pipelines to market the oil.

        Um, if the motive was to secure the borders of the political entity that was Christendom/Europe for security reasons, yeah, ok.
        
        But applying my Protestant lens (which was still in the future when Urban II issued his “Deus vult!” approval in 1095) to the idea of preserving the “holy place”of Jerusalem…less so. All the earth is holy, courtesy of Christ’s enthronement at the right hand of God. The idea that one attains some sort of merit by mans of a pilgrimage, be it to Jerusalem, Rome, wherever is not in keeping with his ministry. But then I am applying a spiritual standard that lay some 400 years in the future before the First Crusade.
        
        But the idea of a spiritual treasury of merit and then dispensations and indulgences were a great motivator to participate in crusades (a bit like jihadist suicide bombers – get immediate absolution for all your sins and entry into paradise by murdering others! 😉 ), and got great impetus from them. Hence, Martin Luther nailing up his 95 Theses in response to Johan Tetzel peddling indulgences and inadvertently kicking off the Reformation was a downstream and unintended consequence of the Crusades. 😉

        Same reason why it is foolish, IMHO, to try and argue the modern state of Israel and its occupation of Jerusalem is some sort of God-ordained manifestation of the preservation of a holy place, that will also usher in the end of the age. Even the original formulators of modern Zionism, a secular ideology built on the Jewish religious tradition, argued that resettlement of Palestine should be for historic and cultural reasons to escape persecution, not to fulfill God’s will.
        
        Doesn’t mean that Israel doesn’t have a right to exist and defend herself – she does. But there are some within Judaism who reject Israel as a spiritual counterfeit Jewish state, as only the Messiah can call them back out of Diaspora.

        Actually, Kimbo, I don’t think it’s quite as clear-cut as that. Catholic teaching is that the Pope is infallible only when he is speaking “ex cathedra” on matters of faith and doctrine.   More Moslems in Europe is presumably designed to promote a resurgence of Christian identity to save the European people from their secularism and or socialism.

    Leaders need to stand for universal values, rather than parochialism, not be held back by the narrow elf-centredness of their own church laity, religious faith, race or nation.
    
    This however is not merely a form of self-sacrifice or appeasement of the will of others (to illegally migrate or to exploit the provision to refugees to become economic migrants), it is also a demand for justice for the oppressed worldwide. Setting an example, while not also calling for Moslem nations to account for their human rights abuses is barren – is seen as weakness that can be exploited (and thus undermines support for generosity to refugees).

  I watched the first ten minutes or so of this chap talking about his book published in 2006.
  He spoke about the declining birthrate of the European countries and gave reasons. He also suggested that although Muslims may start with much higher birthrates that was due to their social circumstances which would gradually change. For example less need to generate workers for their land & the cost of raising children.
  Without resorting to provocative language what further did he add that would cause the people you mention to have a meltdown?

The U.S. Mission to the United Nations announced Sunday that it negotiated a major reduction in the U.N.’s budget for the upcoming fiscal years.

According to a statement from the mission, the 2018-2019 U.N. budget will have a $285 million reduction from the previous two years.

“In addition to these significant cost savings, we reduced the UN’s bloated management and support functions, bolstered support for key U.S. priorities throughout the world, and instilled more discipline and accountability throughout the UN system,” the statement reads.

    Indeed I have. Perhaps you noticed I was engaged in educating a few befuddled friends over on the “Lorde will do Russia” thread this morning. That’s challenging when some of one’s interlocutors are practitioners of what Gideon Levy terms “willed ignorance”, but it’s worthwhile when someone shows a willingness to engage seriously.
    
    Merely yelling “fuck off, you’re tiresome” is not very effective, Cap’n. Surely you are capable of better than that?

Ed West, in the Spectator, writing about British immigration, makes a pint that is relevant to the non-debate on immigration in NZ (our politicians think such policy is no business of the plebs – the voters):

Recruiting highly-qualified workers with specific skills or talents will almost certainly benefit the economy, although it does have the secondary effect of allowing us to ignore structural and educational weaknesses at home. But an open door that allows access to people who may or may not be more skilled or intelligent than the population at large will not by itself improve the economy, only expand it into a bubble. And highly-motivated but low-skilled foreign workers will not necessarily produce highly-motivated children, who will instead have the same outlook and expectations as other British-born people, an aspect almost routinely ignored.
