  It’s early on this day of celebration, and the rubbish bin in my local park is overflowing.
  
  The natives will gather later in the day to drink, eat and be merry. God bless them.
  
  Council need to do better planning when it comes to basic public services like emptying bins in parks. Tomorrow will be too late – there will be rubbish everywhere.
  
  All too often we hear criticism about messy natives (see below) but in this instance one iota of planning from our governing body would go a long way

    There is actually remote sensors for rubbish bins now so that council collectots optimise their route based on need to empty not following same map blindly regardless of where rubbish is collected

    Of course plenty of Maori have legitimate grievances.
    There were many instances where rapacious little councils “borrowed” their land, supposedly for just a few years, then sold it off.
    And not 200 years ago either.
    Those are real rip-offs that have to be repaid.
    But a lot of these grievances going back to 1840 are very dodgy.
    In the 1830s tribes like Nga Puhi took advantage of access to Pakeha technology and went murdering and dispossessing many thousands of Maori of their lands.
    A book I read recently said that assessing ownership of lands as they were in 1840, is equivalent to setting the map of Europe as it was in 1940.
    In many cases we are compensating the WRONG people.
    But as per usual, it’s the squeaky door that gets the oil.
    Many Maori are quietly angry at other tribes who decimated their forebears and stole their land.

As a mark of respect, WeeWinnie should be permitted to enter the Pike River mine to mark the 25th anniversary of the foundation of his party.

  Best Waitangi Day celebration I’ve ever been to was actually a selection of bands playing reggae in Western Springs to celebrate Bobs birthday.

    Life would have been incredibly hard. In the larger tribes food would not
    have been abundant. Just think for a moment how many native pigeons
    needed to supply over a year. Sure slaves provided fresh meat.
    That would not have provided a long term solution. To the reality that at some stage they would have run out of food.
    If it wasn’t for the arrival of european technology
    Maori in the more populated areas would have faced a doubtful future.

        I asked Liberty which Maori academics s/he has been reading. S/he could start with Te Rangi Hiroa who simply describes aspects of pre European Maori life. Or perhaps Te Rangikāheke – neither describe a utopian history. Pakeha Michael King’s biography of Te Puea is not a utopian view by any means. Ranginui Walker does not conform. Nor Wharehuia Milroy. Obviously Liberty and yourself have read others which analyse the social and cultural mores with more “utopian” views. Who have you been reading?

        Sam, I have read Sir Peter Buck (Te Rangi Hiroa) and King and many of the earlier historians. I’ve delved into other (apart from King) recent historians, but I am sceptical about most because of their overconfidence in the reliability of oral history.
        
        In my view, many recent historians’ judgment has been weakened by the influence from those anthropologists who argue that all cultures are of equal value (and that oral history records are as valid as written records).
        
        This implies Papuan tribes that ate enemies’ brains and contracted kuru had a culture equivalent to that of Ancient Greece or the Ming period and the other two golden ages of China.
        
        I see this influence from flaky anthropologists as resulting in down playing dark aspects of pre-colonial Maori society, with its slavery, cannibalism, continual tribal wars, and Stone Age technology.
        
        Sam, you at times are on the mark with your short posts, but I wonder if anyone-else thinks it’s condescending when you ask a person with an opposing view what that person has read about the subject.
        
        It carries the connotation that you have superior knowledge, in a way that you wouldn’t get from the comment: “What the fuck do you know about this?”

        I merely asked which Maori academics Liberty has been reading in order to make that assertion. “What the fuck do you know about this” may be the standard comment on here but that’s not the comment I made. S/he, at this point asserted something about Maori academics which has little basis if s/he hasn’t read any Maori academics that support his/ her assertion. And in the good old kiwiblog vernacular – go fuck yourself you self- righteous condescending prick – oh and happy Waitangi Day.

      Maori populations were limited by an energy shortage.
      While Asian, South American, African and European tribes obtained energy from plant carbohydrates (starches), Maori (like other hunter-gathers) would have depended on proteins and fats (birds, slaves and seafood) for their energy. The exceptions were kumara (in the limited warmer regions) and bracken fern (time-consuming and inefficient).
      If the Maori had the potato, their populations density could have been far higher.

      Apparently she said that “a lack of understanding of history is part of the reason Maori are still so badly represented in some statistics….and teaching about the TOW would remedy this”.
      That’s NOT the reason Maori are doing so badly.
      They’re doing badly for the same reasons as ALL the other Polynesian cultures, because:
      1) their females (apart from a few exulted ones like MM) are treated like servants, punch bags, baby-making machines and generally 2nd class citizens.
      2) the males often feel NO obligation to stay with and support their own children, resulting in many troubled unfathered young males with non-existent role models (apart from the neighborhood gang leader.)
      3) many of the dads are immature idiots who go out boozing, gambling and carousing instead of working around the home with their children, or helping them study.
      4) it’s extremely rare for Maori and Polynesian leaders to state these facts because the males want to retain their power and privilege, and would retaliate.
      There are Maori and Polynesian men who are devoted fathers (and even reasonable husbands.)
      Because they consider their wives and children, they tend to have much smaller families than the chauvinists who take pride in how many kids they have, despite abandoning them.
      Hence the problem increases over time.

        A very lovely lady who was a Maori elder from Waitangi once told me “There are Maoris and there are Maoris” – it is very true as there is quite a class system in Maoridom and their roles have not changed over the years. Incidentally she took us to the Waitangi celebrations about forty years ago, still the same riff raff on the lower marae as there are today. She was such a humble woman who dressed down to accompany us onto the top marae where we sat up with the Governor General, we were honoured and privileged to have known her.

        I think you give her to much credit Chuck. There are plenty of successful Maori and Pakeha that are impressed with her, and the brown elite and no different from the white elite.
        
        But to suggest that she or anyone else for that matter, are responsible for those Maori who refuse to work or pay their rent, grants them magical powers that don’t exist. Of course you’ll get some drop kick claiming “Margaret Mutu said I’m entitled to this this and this”. The same drop kick will call her a f**king honky looking bitch, when she suggests they educate their children, feed them, encourage them to succeed. On this Maori Day have a thought for landlords trapped in the cultural wonderland that is NZ. I heard of one such LL who has Maori tenants, a father , son, female breeder and a small brood. The house is an absolute pig sty, filthy inside and out. LL would desperately like to get rid of these tenants but ‘they have nowhere to go’. His only option was to up the rent, which is being paid by WINZ, or more accurately us. Meantime the house deteriorates badly.

      My auntie had a quite a few rentals and she said the best tenants she ever had were a Maori family.
      One Christmas we were parked outside Farmers and a Maori lady reversed into us.
      A few days later we received a cheque for the damage.
      Nice Maori are exceptionally nice.

  That landlord needs to realise s/he is running a business and issue a termination notice pronto – 90 days unless earlier by order of the Tenancy Tribunal. “Nowhere to go’ is not the landlord’s problem, unless the LL makes it so. Which is rather dumb actually.

      Well landlords in circs like that need to weigh up the costs and benefits of tenants staying or going.
      
      The house in the original post above is said to be deteriorating badly. Like that is going to get better.
      
      The Tenancy Tribunal can order payment from the tenants, and there are remedies to recover the debt as Viking2 says. Might take a while but WINZ will cooperate with benefit deductions.
      
      A landlord in this situation could take into account the government intention to ringfence losses, meaning that they will no longer be able to offset rental property losses aganst other income.

“Who would be a landlord”?. Property owner or Landlord in Christchurch signs up tenants to rent their Property. Part of the rules and conditions of the rental was no smoking inside Property.
Well believe it or not tenants ignored the condition,and caused a lot of cigarette burns and damage to the Property. They were evicted.
Landlord looked for recompense.She got some from Tenancy Tribunal and her insurance company to pay for two badly damaged carpets.
Out of the recompense ,was deducted the excess amount.
The landlord wanted the tenants to pay the excess and took her claim to the District Court.The District Court threw out her claim and said the damage was accidental.
The Landlord then took her claim to the High Court.She got a short shrift by the judge there a person called Gerard Nation.
“Reckless Damage by Tenants Not Intentional”as it qualified for Accidental Damage.Case thrown out.
To reiterate again and again “Who Would be a Landlord”.

If Curran survives the 22 December episode without serious censure it will be due to an accident of timing – having taken place during the press gallery’s pre-Christmas leave period – more than anything.
  
  The media let Curran off the hook with her tweets. So has the Prime Minister.
  
  A final example serves to prove that no new year’s resolution can have been made by the cabinet regarding executive overreach. On 20 January it was reported by RNZ thatthe finance minister was looking to make an example of any landlord found to be illegally raising their rents to exploit students: “we are looking very closely at some of the examples that have been put to us today to see if they would breach [the Residential Tenancies] Act”.
  
  Whether or not Grant Robertson likes it, he doesn’t get to decide what’s illegal in any given case.That’s what the Tenancy Tribunal and/or the courts exist to do.And if a finding is made against a particular landlord by the judiciary – in accordance with the law that Robertson’s government can seek to amend at any time – then punishment is determined by the judiciary, not Robertson, in accordance with the law. For the minister then to add a name-and-shame consequence as he’s threatening (“calling out” landlords who don’t “do a good job”, as he describes it) would surely be double jeopardy, as well as executive interference.
  
  Robertson was being a bully, and he was naming and shaming landlords on his office window. He clearly forgot he was a minister as well.’

    Most Tenancy Tribunal decisions are public documents so no reason Mr Robertson, or anyone, can’t publish names and details. And decisions are usually very detailed.
    
    Since the vast majority of applications are from landlords for rent arrears and damage, publication might not be in the best interest of tenants.
    
    Mr Robertson is encouraging tenants unhappy about the quantum of their rent to go to the TT. Tenants have to provide evidence that the rent is substantially above market rent – most applications fail because the evidence is insufficient or is countered by the landlord’s evidence.
    
    My bet is that few will go down that path once they realise they have to do some work, pay a fee and turn up to a hearing. We shall see.

  Many years ago we rented a nice unit from some family friends. The previous tenant had been a heavy smoker. The flat had been redecorated and was pleasant to live in until the cold frosty mornings arrived…. We would wake to brown condensation from the nicotine damage hanging from the newly painted white ceiling. It never actually dropped but was definitely unsettling. ? We didn’t stay long.

    You can get rid of the nicotine but if is a lot of work. A mixture or Janola and ammonia before repainting is the way. I used to be a landlord but only had to do this when I bought a property.

    No matter how much you try to clean the tar out of the ceiling it will always bleed through if you use water based paints. It’s the ammonia in them that dissolves it. You must use an alkyd primer/umdercoat to seal it into the ceiling, after cleaning it, as first coat and then whatever number of water based coats you need too! 🙂

      Use a good degreaser as the nicotine is oily then some concentrated Janola and then the under coat as Johnboy has said.
      The same applies to mouldy ceilings. Mould will come thru the water based stuff.

So Wellington City Council is virtue signalling again, looking for more ways to spend ratepayer cash, by making Wellington the te reo capital of New Zealand. Or do I mean Aotearoa.

Now there is to be a conversation with a foregone conclusion. Because the conversation is to gather as many ideas as possible, none of which will be – ‘you are spending HOW MUCH on new signs?’ And bilingual signs are to be just the start of a wide ranging programme to transfer ratepayer cash to the many staff and consultants that will be needed.

The majority of voters in the Stuff poll disagree with the project, but I don’t suppose the council will take notice of that or any other conversations that don’t fit the narrative. Some might think that Deputy Mayor Day (who?) should be focusing on core council activities.

The council’s consultation document states that te reo is an integral part of the city and the policy was the council’s public statement of commitment to the language.

As the capital, the city was well placed as the natural home of te reo, which should be recognised, the document says.

The policy will include contributing to Māori well being and incorporating Māori perspectives in all policy work, as well as stimulating Māori economic, social and cultural innovation.

The council wanted to set an example for the rest of the city, Day said.

Thinking of our record that we have the highest record of child poverty in the world or something like that according to my Princess and the UN etc.
We watched Sue Perkins (UK TV one of Bakeoff hosts) on a programme where she visited Kolkata (Calcutta). She spent most of her time there looking at the poor and it was very enlightening particularly as she she spent much time with the children.
We were show a huge area – kms along under the road rail bridge where many tens of thousands of people lived We met men, women and of course children by the hundreds at a time, and were astonished to find how happy they actually appeared to be, particularly the children.
The men worked physically for a very long day and so did the women many of whom had day jobs with the burgeoning middle classes.
The children from what we could understand all went to some sort of school run by charities of all shapes and sizes.
The parents tried to earn enough money to provide food for their families – there were a number of orphans whom the families also cared for.
The children were asked what was their motto – loudly together “to go to school”. What did they want to be when they grow up – Pilot, Teacher , Lawyer,Train Driver of course for the boys.
What it was is that all had positive intentions and knew that only by education they could try and achieve. They only has what they wore and shared a piece of concrete every night with a cardboard underblanket when it was not monsoon effected.
They had no ideas of mobiles, Sky or any TV, McD, KFC. and no Winz, or any welfare.
They did not sleep in cars because they did not have any.
And guess – there were no obesity among them.
We were amazed at the happiness that exuded from them despite their circumstances – they were positive in their belief.
Kolkata is the largest Muslim community in India and they and all other races have lived harmoniously for hundreds of year. The Muslims do not even chop off the heads of other Muslims.
So my comment is Cinderella – do something intelligent for a Communist/Socialist and go and visit Kolkata similarly and actually find out what Poverdy actually is.
Problem is that you do not have the brains to do such as recommended here.
Poor New Zealand and will only get worse – throwing money at it does not develop from poverty to a more productive live via education.
Negativity will not work as you believe.

  I remember another program like that Paulus. I can’t remember the celebrity who did it –I’m not sure if it was the same massive slum but the same thing about the kids was highlighted. The other thing that struck me was despite their extremely poor living conditions and low incomes all the kids going to school were clean and dressed in very clean clothes.

Itemised schedule given but the total to the end of 2016 is stated as $3,075,000,000.

That was 18 months ago and the total has risen with another large settlement recently. When are we going to say enough is finally enough?!

I played golf at Millbrook in January about 15 years ago while on holiday. My hosts said I will be lucky to get a game but walked straight on.It was a bit warm so not many peope around. It was 32 deg. No-one went on about that. It was 30 deg at 7pm. A nice day then. Now the kiddies go into histrionics because there is nothing else in the vacant spots between the ears.

The warmest day on record in NZ is still Feb 1973 which the media seem to have discovered in the last week maybe via Wikipedia or something. It was possibly warmer when the Maoris arrived here during the Medieval warming period but they did not have thermometers (or metal, or written language, or cloth of any sort, or a reliable food source, or bow and arrow or any decent weapon but that could have been a problem in a resource poor environment of cannibals, and when it turned cold they did not have the means to get out as did the people who settled Greenland in the same period, but we are not here to discuss truth on this fine, but not too hot, day. No Sir.)

The stormiest day remains in 1968 with the highest ever winds recorded in NZ during the peak of the Wahine storm in Wellington. The storm system – cyclone Giselle – had already hammered Auckland and hit a cold front coming from the south. It was intense, short lived, and devastating.
It happened.

The media reported news then. The crap now is like we are being hit with the kiddies Facebook or Instagram feeds. Lightweight and irrelevant.

So yesterday, I was rushing about like a headless chicken. I was running late for a funeral and somebody had One’s breakfast show on. I went to turn the silly thing off, and this David (Slack???) someone (he used to be on Radiolive regularly, probably still is, arguing with Rodney Hide I think). Anyhow the panel was talking about how popular Cindy is, this guy was gushing, literally drooling over her. And they compared her to Key, and this David said he thought Cindy was “more constructive.” Ha! This is comedy gold, she is an airhead, without a doubt the dumbest PM in the country’s history. Key, got inflation under control, saved the country from default, grew wealth, cycleways, ultra fast broadband and rebuilt Christchurch. And Cindy has done?

Continuing means savers lose their rightful reward which is nonsense, Logic requires a correction.       Break this gently to Sean Hannity, who might blow his last remaining gasket: Even if the dossier had never been written, Trump and his campaign would still be under investigation.
      
      If you don’t believe me, take it from Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.), whose partisan credentials are unimpeachable — he led the Benghazi inquisition — and who was dispatched by Nunes to review all the classified intelligence used to obtain the Page warrant.
      
      “There is a Russia investigation without a dossier,” he said Sunday. “The dossier has nothing to do with the meeting at Trump Tower. The dossier has nothing to do with an email sent by Cambridge Analytica. The dossier really has nothing to do with George Papadopoulos’s meeting in Great Britain. With major ‘corrections’ on the Dow and ASX there’s no way that the NZX will escape tomorrow after a day in international limbo due to the national holiday.

I would be anticipating a far better nights sleep tonight were English and Joyce in charge of the economy rather than Jacinda, Robbo, Winston and the collective financial brains of the Greens.

Hopefully we are just facing a corrective blip but if it is more serious then God help us as our reserves are now totally over-committed. The ‘rainy day’ that Robbo was relying on not to arrive may well be upon us and it may prove to be more akin to a tropical cyclone.

The government has blocked the sale of land on the West Coast to New Zealand’s leading coal mining company.

The Conservation Minister Eugiene Sage and associate Finance Minister David Clark went against the Overseas Investment Office’s recommendation to allow Bathurst Coal to buy three separate parcels of land totalling 19 hectares on the Denniston Plateau.

Sullivan mine hasn’t operated for 20 years, but Bathurst wanted to buy the land to support its future plans for the Buller coal project.

Bathurst Resources chief executive Richard Tacon said it acquired the land when it bought Solid Energy’s assets, but because it sat in the middle of Department of Conservation land it required Overseas Investment Office approval.

  When all the ferals are living in nice warm houses like those, the repair bill will become so huge that even Grant Robertson will wake up and tell them its enough and its got to stop.
  
  The best idea would be to give them a plot of land to use and then make them do what they do in the Philipines or Bangladesh or Africa. Build their own house.
  
  A better idea would be to sterilize everyone over 16 living in a house that they mistreat.

    There are a many areas of tribal lands, that can be built on. Might is right, so sometimes may have to be relinquished, but occupation is always easy if no one is there. Maori custom is if one is using it then it is yours.
    
    A specialty of buildings can be found in Northland. Then it is up to them to make it water tight, non mouldy and warm. No land lord to blame.
    Perhaps they will prioritize their skills, energy and funds to do a decent job.
    
    The local, regional, councils government ‘ngo’ etc. should stay away with their resource, management consents, water rights and takes, sewerage overflows, plumbing and building consents etc.
