The tree deficit will hit the 30 million mark sometime in the next 24 hours.

We have heard that the trees need to be planted at a specific time of year, and by that time the deficit will have grown another 20 million – so with that in mind I ask the following:-

“Has the government ordered ANY trees – and if so HOW MANY?” 50 million trees will only get half-way to the annual target, but at least it’s a start !

“Has the government organised anywhere for the trees to be planted?”

“Has the government organised any personnel to plant the trees?”

“Has the government organised any vehicles to deliver the trees?”

(This might look like a petty question, but 50 million trees at – say – 3Kg each will weigh over 150,000 tonnes when palletized, and that will require many thousands of truck loads to move.)

Of course there are all sorts of peripheral questions that could be asked about this massive undertaking, but lets first see how they manage in the first tree planting season.

    What this really means is the government actually needs to plant more trees to cover the side affects. Which also means that the KB “Government Tree Deficit” maybe understating the deficit.

  Just a little correction – the seedling trees weigh only about 100 – 200 grams, nothing like 3 kg.
  I did tree planting back in the 60’s to earn money during my holidays. With a haversack holding arould 100 seedlings and armed with a spade, one can plant about 5 or 6 trees per minute.
  Just saying (but I gave an uptick) 🙂

    Don. Sure it is possible to plant 5 to 6 trees per minute, if you are a productive conscientious person – in which case you are likely already employed and generating value in the economy.
    
    However they are hoping to use the people you find in the sawdust swept off the pub floor. I figure 10 per hour is going to be a stretch.
    
    Anyway, at this stage it’s all conversation…

      I had a friend at school whose father was a railways supervisor in the 1970’s.
      When investigating why a shed was taking so long to be built he discovered the crew were playing poker.
      The loser of each round had to go and nail a sheet of iron up.

      I do know that they will not ask any of the regular KB zombies, they are far to busy sitting on KB all day criticizing all the good people going about their business.
      
      For your information , I suspect that all the planting will be done by existing Forestry Management Companies, and there are several of these in existence. They already have their own staff.
      Also likely that planting will be done by a combination of machine, where possible, and by hand.
      When by hand under a contract system, very high numbers can and will be achieved.

    Thanks for that Don. I based my calculation on the little trees I get from Bunnings which all seem to be a few kilos.
    
    Even so, there will still be many thousands of tons of seedlings to be transported, and thousands of hours work to plant them at 6 trees per minute.

      The seedlings you plant like this are bare root trees or – at an absolute maximum – trees in root trainers.
      
      They are not in pots like Bunnings/nursery trees.
      
      You can pick up a box of a hundred trees under one arm.
      
      I would say Don’s estimate of 200-300 g is an over estimate. Probably 50-100 grams is more like it.

        76th year looming in a few months, and desperately trying to stay in shape and keep off excess weight. Was a bit of a slob last winter during my facial cancer surgery and hit 83kgs. So on a plan now – down to 76kg, aiming for the most-of-my-life weight at around 72kgs. But I can still tounch my toes with knees straight – have to do that to stop my sciatic nerve giving mr greif.

    How long did it take to refill the haversack then? Accordingly it only took 20 minutes give or take to plant them and then you would have to walk back to get some more, how did the logistics work?

      I was working for a tree planting contractor named Lou Baker. He had a few thousand seedlings on the back of his old Landrover. He would park – say – at the bottom of a small valley, and we planted the trees up the sides. So plant one seedling, take 3 steps up the hill, open the ground with the spade, insert the seedling and tramp the hole closed. 3 more steps up, spade,plant, tramp and so on. Walk back down the hill to the LR and get more when you ran out. Rarely had to walk more than 200 yards, but yes, time taken. From memory, Lou, my mate and I would plant about 1000 – 1500 trees each per day
      depending on the terrain and scrub.

        Should inject quite a stimulus to the economy, slash unemployment numbers and see a whole lot of 4wd utes entering the country over the next few months.

        I just cannot see the unemployed being involved in the land clearing and then planting, without constant supervision.
        
        The logistics will be mind blowing. Accomodation, Transport, food, medical aid for blisters, adverse weather conditions…

    No but they’ve probably had a conversation about how to set out the terms of reference for starting a conversation about the logo and the correct Maori title for the focus group which will set up the process for a hui.
    
    Until we have the terms of reference it is far too early to guess what the hui is about.

  As has been mentioned before, estimates would suggest the 100 million tree project would need land equivalent to a strip 1 kilometre wide extending from Wellington Airport to Auckland Airport (state highway1) and back 1 kilometre wide the other side of the highway to 2 km short of Taupo.
  How is Shane doing with organising the land needed?
  
  How many people are required at present to water and tend the 4 million trees he has already supposedly acquired – all of the seedlings available at present.
  Why no PR pictures of that already?
  
  50 million trees are planted anyway each year. Why can Shane not access all the figures of those operations and just double them to know where he stands?
  
  And, Take Care! – that Shane does not fuzzy the media with statement confusing those 50m trees with his 100m.
  Already he has stated something like he will only be able to plant 20% this year in comparison, so this year “We will only plant 55m.”
  No, Shane, you might manage to plant 5 million – if you can find 1 million to go with the 4m you already say you have.
  The 50m are other organisations, unless you took 4 million of their seedlings and they are knocked back to planting only 46m this year

    Easy to meet the targets to be planted in the back-blocks.
    
    It was known that a young fellow, feeling a bit tired, would have a nap, then empty the bag into a hollow, and return for refill.
    Then the next young fellow would do likewise, as they covered for each other in the gang.
    
    Just who counted what was planted?, but that days target was met. 🙂
    
    Trees always ‘evaporated’, not planted properly, under pruning, and thinning, to another 25 years to eventual harvest.

    All Maori lands will get free plantations paid for by the stupid white fullah.
    
    Along with a free pine plantation, they will get an extra payment for taniwha food to help guard the plantations.

    You don’t water the seedlings…. they have to rely on natural rainfall…. hence the importance of the plants having good root systems, being planted when rain is likely and the need for proper planting (roots not exposed, squashed, damaged, etc).
    
    Usually the land will need site preparation (scrub cleared, spot spraying of creeping weeds, tall grasses, before planting occurs).

      Maggy, at last someone on here with some clue about forestry, good to see.
      
      Where there is an abundance of broom and gorse, then line cutting is needed before planting.
      Prior to that poles need to placed to get the lines sorted.
      The contractors will know how many per hectare are required.
      
      I see much criticism of Shane Jones on KB, but planning is the essence, and that takes time to get all ducks in a row.
      However, I doubt Jones give two stuffs about KB anyway.

    Good point dime. And, funnily enough, the trolls have shut up about those same cycleways, for a very obvious reason – they got delivered. I enjoy riding them and have done so for years. Even got involved lobbying for them and helped with planning and delivery.
    
    The current tree thing is reliant on Shane Jones doing some actual work. To say he is lazy is to say Jacinda has a great set of chompers – truly an understatement of epic proportions.

The reward for the interns is a job for life with the New Forest Service thus saving on advertising costs. No work for the dole but jobs for the boys instead.

  I heard a very well spoken elderly ( Maori I think) man on ZB last night. Sounded like he was from up north and has attended all Waitangi celebrations upper and lower marae annually, he said there was a lot of deals done in the Copthorne over the five days. I would love to have been a fly on the wall.

I went into the Sawmill Cafe at Leigh during the weekend, and, I kid you not, these precious little petals have decided that straws are not politically correct because of the ‘harm’ they do to the environment!

Here’s their pathetic bleating lecture as delivered on their menu: (quote) “WE ARE PROUDLY STRAW FREE. Those little suckers are no good for our NZ beaches. If you are desperate to use one we have paper straws available at 50c which gets donated to help a local beach cleanup group.” (unquote)

What has NZ come to, when a business can condescendingly lecture to its patrons like this and get away with it?

I nearly vomited with disgust at these people’s onanistic arrogance and I was going to tell them to shove their virtue signals up their arses… but then I was further stunned to hear from some members of our group that this is perfectly acceptable nowadays because it shows that the business ‘cares for the environment’!

Am I crazy, or has our society taken leave of its senses? What’s going on here? How many fucking STRAWS are there on NZ beaches and if there are any at all on Leigh’s foreshore, did they just walk there themselves from a cafe 500m from the nearest shoreline?

Plastics are GOOD for the environment because they (usually) don’t break down (i.e. rot) into their component chemicals and plastic is manufactured into literally millions of extremely useful things, many of which are used as containers tor stuff which would otherwise pollute the environment.
    
    Like so many people, you have mindlessly bought into a popular meme that ‘plastics are bad for the environment’ without actually thinking it through for yourself.
    
    PEOPLE who litter beaches and throw plastic into the ocean are bad for the environment… but the plastics themselves are wonderful, useful, cheap and extremely beneficial to humans.

        I realise you’re trying to be clever…. but no actually its not the same at all. Your logic is false.
        
        The ONLY purpose of guns is to kill people, and therefore it makes sense to EITHER remove guns from society OR make the penalty for shooting at someone or threatening with a gun punishable by instant death.
        
        The purpose of plastics is entirely different. Plastics were created to make humans’ lives better, more healthy, safe and convenient and they are amazingly good at this. Totally different to guns.
        
        Additionally, plastic does not find its way into the sea all on its own; it is either dropped there intentionally, or it gets there through inattention and sloppy waste disposal protocols.
        
        The answer is not to ban plastic. The answer is to make intentional dumping and littering and sloppy waste disposal a serious offence with harsh monetary penalties.

  People don’t behave in ways consistent with their pronouncements.
  
  The New World in Thorndon Wellington is in a prosperous area and full of prosperous customers. I’d guess if polled these customers would say plastic bags are evil. However you go to the supermarket any evening and it is packed full of these people carrying their groceries to their suvs in plastic bags. I’d say at a rate of 100 bags a minute on a busy day.

Looks very much like a cyclone which will form around Fiji will make a visit to our shores. Exact track still to be confirmed but the models are in general agreement that it will come our way.

If it comes in from the NE direction it has the potential to cause a lot of damage to eastern parts of the North Island.

  The US stock market indices have nothing to do with the President. The FED has been creating too much money and it has gotten out of control. Money always finds a home.
  
  Savers have been paying for this with very low returns. There has been a massive transfer of wealth and opportunity with this almost free money to the already rich. It has also found its way here as out banks have access through global wholesale markets. It fuelled our house prices.
  
  Now the FED and other central banks are trying to re-adjust their irregular positions. An adventure in criminal recklessness?

    True KebOB since most know it easy to print money but much harder to make it into real money. Bill English avoided the soft option and managed a recovery to a strong economy through controlled borrowing for essential expenditure.
    The COL will undo that strength with accelerated borrowing for increased hand-outs instead of paying down debt. This folly is far more costly even than funny money but still pushes an expanded national debt to future taxpayers.

As has become expected there was even a wee protest, but not against the govt, instead it was a spat over the lower marae v the upper marae and right at the end when all the celebrations were over.

… The biggest risk for the Government over the next 1000 days is a failure to deliver on its core promise — Kiwibuild. Ramping up a programme to build 100,000 houses in a decade will always take time, but the Government’s commitment to built 16,000 in the first three years is very specific. The first Kiwibuild home has been promised for mid-2018.

Voters will want to see houses being built pronto and won’t have much tolerance for excuses, of which there are smorgasbord to choose from, ranging from construction sector capacity, Council borrowing capacity, ratings agency nit-picking, RMA-wielding NIMBYs and nervous bankers. Any signs of bickering between the Government and the Auckland Council in particular, or foot-dragging by either, would disappoint voters hoping for solutions. Any delays in forming the Housing Commission and getting MBIE’s interim Kiwibuild unit up and running will be leapt on by the Opposition and the media alike.

The key players are Housing and Transport Minister Phil Twyford and Auckland Mayor Phil Goff. They need to coordinate their respective governments to plan, fund and deliver the joint and massive investment projects needed to build at least 50,000 Kiwibuild houses in Auckland over the next decade, as well as the rail and other infrastructure needed for those houses. The Government and the Auckland Council must somehow come up with the tools to fund new urban development projects. That will require the cooperation and enthusiasm of both private bond investors and the ratings agencies, who can be wary of the special purpose vehicles that Twyford and Goff hope to use to keep the debt off both their balance sheets. … read more via hyperlink above …

  pdm, it happens to me about once a week on each of my devices (desktop and iPad) . I can understand it happening when the iPad has received a systems update or been rebooted but most times there is no obvious reason; I won’t have exited but merely minimised the screen but suddenly I find myself locked out and needing to log on again.

I supported his crusade against keeping sex offenders hidden, and his generally pro right wing commentary. I enjoyed his Winston, unemployed, of St Mary’s Bay postings, and supported his anti abortion stand.   What the hell is it with TV producers that they get a bunch of lefties to front their shows? And the way they suck up to the PM is nauseating…….

      I take a look now and again – but can’t go back to watching any of these shows in earnest. Tv is on in the background as I’m surfing the net so I hear snippets. Hilary Barry did it for me when she was shrieking at Bill English during the election campaign. I couldn’t believe it that she got herself so worked up and behaved in a very abusive manner.
      Prior to that, I was underwhelmed by her performance when she was on the Paul Henry show.
      So yes, I take a precursory glance now and then, but to purposely tune in and sit down and watch any of those shows in their entirety doesn’t happen for me now.

Natalie Joyce has said she feels “deceived and hurt” by her husband, Australian deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce, for starting an affair with a person who was his employee at the time.

After the Daily Telegraph’s publication of a picture of the visibly pregnant Vikki Campion, Natalie Joyce said in a statement that she was “deeply saddened by the news that my husband has been having an affair and is now having a child with a former staff member”.

First item after the 4 o’clock news is the vibe around this exciting new prime minister, and the excellent showing she made at Waitangi. “By any measure,” says host Jim Mora, “Jacinda Ardern’s trip north went well.” The panelists agree that Jacinda Ardern and her government are in for a lot more positive coverage in future, and the prospects for the Nasty Party seem dim. Then Penny Ashton comes up with one of the best lines of the year so far….

PENNY ASHTON: What is National going to do to counter her? I hear talk of Simon Bridges being in line for the leadership. I hope he does become leader, because he has all the charm of a school bully.

Mora does not greet this apposite and humorous quip with one of his trademark guffaws. Nor does he mutter his habitual, insincere “That’s very funny!” Instead he falls into an icy silence, as he does whenever someone makes a remark even slightly critical of the National Party.

After that awkward moment it is time to interview the first guest of the afternoon, billed as the “head of animal welfare” for Federated Farmers. His name is Chris Lewis and he apparently owns a farm “in the Waikato.” Mora insisted, at least three times, that Lewis is “one of the good farmers”. Maybe he is, but he didn’t seem to know much about the topic he was brought on to talk about: the suffering of dairy cows in the sun, with no trees to shelter under. Chris Lewis seemed to have no idea about anything. It was one of the most embarrassing performances in the history of The Panel—and that, as any long-time listener will attest, is very embarrassing indeed.

JIM MORA: Yeah, but are shelter belts being removed for the ease of installing centre-pivots?

CHRIS LEWIS: Ahhh, I don’t farm in Canterbury and I haven’t been there much lately. …. Our role is to show leadership and to educate our members….. But we need your listeners to tell us what are the best trees to plant…. [more confused blathering then, mercifully, he stops.]

….STUNNED SILENCE….

PENNY ASHTON: I would have thought he’d be the expert on such things.
MORA: No, he’s—
PENNY ASHTON: He’s the head of animal welfare for Federated Farmers.
MORA: No, he’s looking for arboreal advice.
PENNY ASHTON: [clearly unimpressed] Hmmmmmm….

Later, near the end of the program, Penny Ashton manages to run afoul of Jim Mora’s highly selective moral code again….

PENNY ASHTON: He’s a disgusting piece of human garbage, Piers Morgan.
MORA: We don’t need to go into that….

Following up on my phone call to you yesterday at 5.30pm, I am requesting a meeting with you, and whomever else you wish to have in attendance, to discuss ‘rates postponement’ and recent developments.

I am available to meet at any time during the working day this Friday, 26 January 2018, at a time and venue that is convenient to you, and will bring a ‘support person’ with me.

Please be reminded, as I raised with you yesterday, although I did receive the following email from Kelly Quinn, (Principal Solicitor, Civil Litigation, Legal Services, Auckland Council), I missed it, it ‘fell through the cracks’ as it were.

Please also be reminded that I can receive over 100 emails per day, I don’t have any ‘staff’ to assist me, and am probably not the only person who has ever missed an important email?

That day, 28 November 2018, I was very involved, as I had been from 20 November 2018, with the ‘Occupy Garnet Road’ action, and that evening was an important public meeting at the Grey Lynn RSC, to discuss with Auckland Transport, local business, residents’ and public concerns over AT’s work in West Lynn and the local neighbourhood.

So – I was very busy at that time, and apologise for missing and not responding to this correspondence from Kelly Quinn.

I look forward to your confirmation of a meeting time and venue, this Friday 26 January 2018.

    It is apparent from her responses that Ms Bright has not made an application for postponement of rates in accordance with the procedure provided by the Council. Ms Bright’s open letter response and partially completed application were at most an indication of a conditional intent to apply for rates postponement if certain conditions she sought to impose on the Council were met.   Once it is locked out it is best to delete history in your browser.
  Failing that delete history and restart browser.
  Worst case scenario is to clear history AND do disk clean up.
  Then restart.
  Failing that I am not sure. Think of the widows and orphans and chillren without raincoats.
  A good citizen would get in their (electric) car (or cycle) and take cash to the IRD before midnight!
  
  If you have the details for the payment- the amount, IRD number, you should be able to pay direct via your bank and not go to the IRD site. I use ASB and it has specific IRD payment option in ‘Payments’
  Print out your receipt from the online banking if there is one or do screen grab.

The inciting passage in the property magnate and polemicist’s “Bits and Bobs” column, which carried the subheading “Time for a troll”, argued, “as there are no full-blooded Māoris in existence it indisputably follows that had it not been for migrants, mainly Brits, not a single Māori alive today … would have existed”. Ergo, he continued, “it’s long overdue for some appreciation. I have in mind a public holiday where Māori bring us breakfast in bed or weed our gardens, wash and polish our cars and so on, out of gratitude for existing.”

      Rich prat P.J. O’Rourke seems to think he’s a satirist, but I don’t think sneering at starving and dying people is evidence of anything other than depravity.
      
      I can think of many brilliant left wing/liberal satirists—Frankie Boyle, Dave Chapelle, and of course our own Guy Williams.

As I recall, some of the people who comment at The Standard thought it was a great song – underwritten, presumably, by NZ on Air funding.

EAD TWO , no hated of goyim since I’m on elf them .The Times of Israel item on the Armenian Genocide is interesting . Israel’s relationship with Turkey is a complex one dictated by the fact that Turkish Airlines use air routes to Israel a great deal . Also the Israel Air Force uses Turkish airspace for their drills and practice .

It is much like our government being careful not to offend Turkish feelings all because of access to Anzac Cove . Not a satisfactory situation but underlines the complexities that can involve International relations that go beyond your crude attempt to propagandise that crude term Goyim you like to bandy about .
