Did anyone notice how TV1 erased the PM’s facial reaction, when she was told Trump was going to meet with Kim Jong Un, on the 6pm news tonight?

Last night on the late news they showed her completely taken aback with downturned mouth, looking highly unprofessional and un-Prime Ministerial.

Either her PR machine told TVNZ to remove the offending facial expression or the media took it upon themselves to try to save her from embarrassing herself further on national television.

TVNZ need to explain why they manipulated a news item.

Either way it just shows the NZ media are manipulating news reporting to suit their own left wing political agenda.

  You have to wonder but I am guessing someone in the media will have taken this upon themselves. You find when the left are in power the media will do anything they can to help them out. The funny thing is this eventually backfires on them and the politician concerned (think Helen Clark’s last term) as the public eventually realise that just like the rest of us they make mistakes but they are not being shown them.
  I have said from the start even with H1 and H2’s assistance our current PM is no H1 and the problems will become more and more apparent and even the media will not be able to paper over the cracks.

      President Trump really doesn’t give a hoot what anyone thinks, that has become very clear.
      He doesn’t suffer fools, he will state his case clearly like it or not.
      Ms Ardern and Mr Trump are from very different worlds.
      When you have a PM that is asked a question, has to go off and get her face plastered, get someone to assist her with an answer, have someone point out she needs to do up her jumper or top.
      It would really be the same as sending a child off to meet Donald and the outcome will be the same.

    I certainly don’t mind what someone chooses to do and wear in their private life, however…
    
    If you’re a Prime Minister, especially when doing things in your official capacity, then how you portray yourself is important.
    
    One might expect this to be understood by someone who got an A in PR at Uni.
    
    But Jacinda dresses link a skank. (Bra on show with a low-cut dress? Really? https://resources.stuff.co.nz/content/dam/images/1/l/8/o/a/j/image.related.StuffLandscapeSixteenByNine.620×349.1li7yo.png/1504738988018.jpg). Add to that her silly boots and photo-ops with Aussies in slippers.
    
    She is also representing us internationally and, being a communications major, she will know that facial frowns etc are often a stronger form of communication than the actual words you use, especially with non-Anglo cultures.
    
    Her communications skills (including her lack of composure) are lacking. And, again, you would expect better self-awareness from a star communications graduate.

        Aussie have a credible and effective Defence Force. NZ … well would you count 3 frigates, 8 (sometimes) serviceable NH90’s, and 100 (with more than 50 in storage) LAV’s, and not a fighter jet to be seen outside Warbirds as a Defence Force? Hardly. This is why the US and Australia are strong allies – they pull their weight. All we contribute is a very competent and well trained but small SAS force.

        MZ has swallowed a lot of dead rats over the years to keeps on side with America.
        Most notably being one of the very few countries that sent troops to aid South Vietnam.
        Once in a while we have resisted America’s pressure such as the nuclear shop issue & Iraq.
        Let’s see how America values the relationship.

      It’s great that the Aussies have an exemption for aluminium given that Meridian power is used to produce Australian aluminium at Tiwai Point. The Government owns 51% of Meridian Energy and will benefit from the dividends as will the Kiwis who were astute enough to purchase Meridian shares at the time of semi-privatisation.

  IMO Donald Trump has a twofold target with his tariffs on steel and aluminium. Keeping yet another election promise while setting a baseline and a negotiation tool for trade agreements.

To those who question our current PM’s choice of slipper like footwear I am guessing she is wearing a pair of AllBirds wool loungers. Now I love these shoes and they are the most comfortable shoes I own but even I am aware that there are situations where these are just not appropriate and that situation is anywhere beyond 20 meters from my front door.
She is our PM whether we like it or not for the next 3 years so it is now time for someone in the Labour ranks to take her aside, make her over and make her look serious on the international stage.

In 1835, two Maori tribes from the Taranaki district, the Ngāti Mutunga and Ngāti Tama, decided to colonise the Chatham Islands, which they called Wharekauri in their own language. They acquired a pair of ships, assembled 900 warriors and enough supplies to plant crops and settle, and set off.
The Chatham Islands were already inhabited by the Moriori people, who numbered around 2,000 in total. When they arrived, the Maori kidnapped a 12-year old girl, cut her to pieces, and hung her various body parts from the trees as an official declaration of war on the Moriori.
The Moriori, however, isolated on their island, had no tradition of warfare and held a moral code that frowned on violence. They decided not to fight the Maori invaders, but to use passive resistance and non-violence. It might have worked for Gandhi, but it didn’t work against the Maori.
Frustrated of an honourable fight, the Maori warriors simply walked into the Moriori villages and started slaughtering people indiscriminately—men, women and children alike. Those who ran away were hunted down, hauled out of their hiding places, and killed.
The Maori then ritually cooked and ate some of the people they’d killed.
Next, they took about 200 women and children they’d captured alive, took them down to the beach, and staked them out on the sand to die. Those children and women lingered several days before they perished of thirst and exposure.
After several days of murder, cannibalism, and ritual torture, the Maori decided they’d won. They took all the women who were still alive and old enough to be raped, and shared them out between themselves. The Moriori men who’d survived the massacre were simply enslaved.
The Maori did not allow their male Moriori slaves to marry or have children. Within 30 years, 95% of the Moriori people were dead. Today, there are none left—apart from those people of mixed Maori-Moriori ancestry descended from the women taken as sex slaves.
There have been larger genocides, it’s true. But few of them ever attained the comprehensive scale, in terms of the proportion of the people deliberately killed, of this one. And since the Taranaki Maori didn’t establish all that many colonies, their record, in percentage terms, has to be the most barbaric of all.

  My initial reaction was that the Bantu people colonising Southern Africa and taking over from the Koi San would be worse., but I only made it about halfway through before realising the Maori were the winners.
  
  A question I have is why the Maori people actually left their original islands and came to NZ.
  
  Based on looking at colonisation elsewhere, it seems there are two possible reasons:
  
  A) A few waka loads of highly adventurous and motivated people were disenchanted with their life and chose to travel to faraway lands to seek something better. We could call this the American Settler model.
  
  B) The worst reprobates and criminals on the islands were banished and sent away and told to find somewhere else to live. We could call that the Aussie Criminal model.
  
  Possibly a mix of the two. eg. Aussie was both settled by people looking for a new place to live as well as criminals being banished.
  
  Genuine question. Anyone got answers?

    I’ll grant you that the Belgian colonialism in Africa was barbaric, but most of the people that died during that period dies from disease etc. Some of those diseases (eg. smallpox) might have been nasty collateral damage from colonisation, but it would be a stretch to chalk those up on the genocide scoreboard.
    
    There are numbers like 10 million deaths bandied about, I doubt the number of deliberate killings by Belgians is anything like that.
    
    This is all a good reminder that if you get the opportunity to choose your colonizer, then choose the best. Choose the Brits.

It determines who is responsible for its care, for fixing it if it is damaged, for making sure that it does not damage other people or their property, for liability if it does.

Now in the case of water. Do you really think that “no one” is a satisfactory answer to /any/ of those questions? What questions /do/ you think “no one owns water” actually resolves?

        There are heaps of references to the RC churches burning & otherwise destroying books but there are plenty of protestations that they didn’t. Pick your side but my guess is that some orders were more tolerant & liberal than others.
        
        Cathedrals were built…..so were castles but not much else because the church & the nobles were the only ones who could fund construction. In any case road making & water reticulation from all accounts didn’t exist.

    All of the Polynesian languages are related and share common vocabulary. A couple of weeks ago the Bird sisters from Matata were doing their TV cooking show with a local in Hawaii, and he called the club he was using to beat out taro into a paste, a “patu”.
    
    So same word as in Maori, despite being at the furtherest distance in the massive New Zealand/Hawaii/Rapanui (Easter Island) triangle.

I am often critical of the New Zealand Police, and have made comments to this effect on occasions. Today, however, they deserve praise. We went to the police open day in Auckland, (partly because my daughter wants to join them after reading a degree in Science), and I was impressed by what was on offer, and the huge effort made to really engage with the public in a very positive manner. What was especially noticeable was the effort made to engage with children of all ages. Well done.

One of the goals of the current administration is to amend tenancy law to encourage Longer Term Tenancies. This, we are informed from on high, would be good for landlords, good for tenants, good for families and good for motherhood and apple pie.

So, given that this would be a win-win for all concerned, why are longer term tenancies not the usual choice in this country?

The bible under which we all operate, the Residential Tenancies Act, allows residential tenancies to either being periodic with no defined end date, or fixed term, where an end date is specified at the start of the tenancy and both tenant and the landlord agree that the tenancy will run until that time. So there seems to be no obvious legal obstacle that would, in itself, discourage either landlord or tenant offering or accepting a tenancy of several years’ duration.

However, as such a tenancy seems to be a rare beast at best, apparently we need to look elsewhere for a reason.

The typical successful kiwi landlord normally runs through a lifetime buy-and-sell cycle. Usually entering into the investment property market once established in employment, they then continue to build up the size of portfolio through a few decades. At some point they may feel they have acquired enough assets so they then concentrate on paying off some or all of the debt on the properties. Then, about the time they move into their retirement years, their focus changes from capital appreciation to income generation. Cash-flow money is now needed for those overseas trips, the expensive toys, and the long lunches with friends and family. Eventually, as the body tires and withers, the investment portfolio is gradually sold off to fund the rest home charges, the grandchildren’s education, and to switch to more passive investments that no longer require the tired old brain to make constant day-to-day decisions. A cup of tea and a nice lie-down is so much more relaxing than facing the never-ending problems of property ownership and tenancy management.

Thus even the most future-focused private investor is aware that, eventually, the game will end and everything will pass out of their ownership.

On the other side, tenants normally fall into one of four groups. The traditional kiwi tenant is a younger person, generally renting as part of a group or as a couple, and is in the early stages of adult life. As we are all aware, such a person is probably unsettled and has yet to establish their place in the world. Thus they are highly likely to move across the country or across the world as they chase educational and work opportunities. They would react with horror at being bound into a five or ten-year tenancy, and being able to depart from a periodic tenancy on only 21 days’ notice suits them just fine. In time, once they have moved on to a career path and established personal relationships most of this group will climb onto the property ownership ladder.

The second group are the strivers. Having passed through or avoided that uncertain stage of life, these tenants have set their goal firmly on home ownership. They are renting only while they save, are saving hard, see their current tenancy as a short term stepping-stone, and as soon as they can afford to do so will move off into their owner-occupied home. Good on them. Usually, sooner or later, they will attain that goal even if they have to sacrifice much and possibly move towns to achieve it. We can all applaud their efforts and their success.

At the other end of the spectrum are those who have accepted or are resigned that they will live in rented accommodation for the rest of their lives – or at least until that winning Lotto ticket comes in. Either through misfortune, lack of ambition, or possibly even choice they have passed on the normal home ownership step and, with luck, found a rental property that they like, can call home, and suits them just fine.

In the middle are the angry and upset people. Although they are renting (or trying to) they feel cheated. They see the system as their enemy, the lack of available rentals as a market failure, and every unsuccessful tenancy application as a personal affront. In their eyes a landlord is at best a rip-off merchant and at worst their enemy. With little idea of the actual on-going financial costs of owning a property they are firmly convinced that every dollar of the rent they pay goes to fund their landlord’s expensive tastes and lust for high living. These are the people who agitate politically for punitive restrictions and bay for harsh property-specific taxes to be imposed on those whom, without much thought or distinction, they sweepingly class as tax-avoiding speculators. Frequently, their holy grail is a Housing New Zealand rental where they can settle down and pay a well-below market rent that is heavily subsidized by the unwilling taxpayer.

So on one hand we have most of our landlords fixated at best on the short to medium term future and the majority of tenants with a similar short-term focus. Hardly surprising then that most landlords offer and the majority of tenants choose either a periodic tenancy or a one-year fixed term option.

When you actually look at the suggestions around the creation of longer term tenancies, most of the proposals take the form of compelling the landlord to offer the longer term, with associated penalties if they fail to do this, while leaving the tenant to terminate the tenancy largely at will and without any punishment. Many landlords I speak to can tell stories about the difficulties of getting their tenants to commit to even a twelve month fixed term, most seemingly having a strong preference for the periodic option.

In another facet of my life I am a sort of an honorary tenancy consultant to the local Citizens Advice Bureau. The second most frequently asked tenancy question there, preceded only by how to resolve the difficulties created within the tenancy by a relationship breakup, is how can tenants escape from their fixed term tenancy well before the end date. Hardly a case of tenants desperate for long-term tenancies while evil landlords fail to provide it.
