I have read the following with regard to the recent Young Labour sex and alcohol fest weekend event:-

“The mountain of alcohol included Rum, Vodka, Cider and a large array of RTD’s”

Auckland Water Police are presently boarding fishing boats and checking levels of alcohol aboard, not alcohol supplied or sold by the operator, but alcohol brought aboard by fishermen/women.

How, then, can a Labour Youth Camp, where there is a reasonable expectation that underage children will be present, be host to the aforementioned “mountain” of booze? I trust that Police will exercise the same level of vigilance in their investigation of this political event.

Who supplied the “mountain” of booze?

Was it supplied by the Labour Party or by the venue?

Was that establishment licensed to sell or supply liquor?

Was the licensee serving the liquor?

I will leave the sexual assault element of this event for others to comment on, I’ve seen this before in Labour, and no doubt will see it again. Indeed there is a separate thread today covering both the sexual and alcohol aspects !

But the service of alcohol at a Labour Party event where underage children are expected to be in attendance is a matter requiring deep scrutiny, and almost certainly Police investigation !

  Well said- It was freaking impossible (2 hour wait) to get a drink at the Jimmy Barnes concert in Christchurch a few weeks ago (Police only allowed one tiny beer tent!)
  
  Yet teenagers (some underage!) are seemingly plied with alcohol at Labour Party functions…

    My wife went to have her hair done on Friday afternoon. The hairdresser apologised for not being able to offer her and the other ladies present, all of whom were well over 18, a glass of wine as they had in the past. The police had come in two days before and told them they were in breach of the licensing laws for doing so and would prosecute if they found it happening again. I can’t conceive of a comment that would accurately describe such fuckwittedness.

      In Tijuana the shopkeepers are very insistent you partake in a shot of Tequia while surveying their wares.
      
      In Czech Rep we went on a rafting trip through a forest (note it was mostly gentle flowing river with a small number of bumps). At checkin they gave us a map showing where they would pick us up and a hip flask of rum for the jounrney. At multiple places on the river were small beer halls for refreshments.
      
      In NZ the above businesses would be closed down in two minutes.
      
      The cops can’t stop reoffending criminals but have lots of time to annoy the hell out of law abiding people

        No-one would deny that aspects of New Zealand’s drinking culture are barbaric, but I don’t see that Police exercising a zero tolerance approach to the whole thing could be in the least bit constructive. If you treat adults as if they are idiots, they will behave accordingly. They are supposed to be guardians of our laws, not our morals, and I think they often blur the lines

Some more judicial ‘white anting’ of the strikes regime has occurred. The issue was whether a judge needs to take into account that the crime is a ‘second strike’ crime when sentencing. The consequences of a ‘second strike’ is the offender must serve the full sentence imposed with no opportunity of parole. The offender in question received 2.5 years for aggravated robbery (there were two other co-offenders) and the District Court Judge declined to take the second strike into account when sentencing (ie a ‘good’ judge in Whaleoil’s books). Offender appealed and the High Court supported the DCJ’s stance.
Offender then appeals to the Court of Appeal who considered that the existence of a second strike needs to be considered when sentencing and sent the case back to the District Court for re-sentencing with an expectation of a reduced sentence. While the Appeal Court indicated there were limited circumstances where this would apply it does mean that this matter will be raised at every second strike sentencing.
One criterion is that the circumstances of the first strike crime be at the less serious end of the spectrum. The Sentencing Act defines particular crimes as ‘serious violent offending’, in reality the commission of the crime does not involve ‘serious violence’. One can hardly say that pinching a police woman’s bottom is ‘serious violent offending’. The first strike crime was the unlawful sexual connection by a 19 year old (approx) with a 12-16 year old person. Seems the Appeal Court did not consider in the circumstances it was ’serious violent offending’ in the ordinary sense (presumably the victims consented or acquiesced). The second one was the desirability of a ‘rehabilitative’ sentence being effective. Hence the Appeal Court indicated that in some circumstances a second strike sentence could be ‘manifestly unjust’ although it acknowledged that the ‘manifestly unjust’ exception applied to third strike sentencing only. However the Appeal Court in the round ruled that the sentence imposed could be reduced to blunten the impact of the second strike ‘no parole’ rule.

  The aspect that interests me is that Parliament has decreed that USC is a serious violent offence (without qualification), but the Court of Appeal decided that if it the offending did not in fact involve serious violence, a sentencing court could use that fact to mitigate the mandatory provisions of the Sentencing Act. I don’t know what “white-anting” means, but basically the three strikes legislation has been judicially rogered up the bottom and will be gone by the end of this Parliamentary term

    ‘white ants’ are a type of termite found in Australia and they eat out the interiors of wooden power poles, house foundations etc leaving no outward sign of damage until it is too late. Electricity utilities there have to do invasive tests on power poles every several years to try and see if there is a problem before the pole topples. Hence ‘white anting’.

    This is the problem. Some low end ‘three strikes’ crimes may or may not involve ‘serious violence’ depending on the circumstances, but the Act schedules the crimes involved in a ‘black and white’ manner. The ‘three strikes’ legislation was premised on it applying to ‘serious violent offending’ as was outlined in David Garrett’s third reading speech. This was the basis on which the bill was ‘sold’ to Parliament. So difficulties arise in sentencing under the three strikes regime when either the ‘strike’ being sentenced or one of the previous strikes did not actually involve ‘serious violent offending’. Calling ‘serious violent offending’ when it is not is rather like Humpty Dumpty saying that a word means what he says it means regardless of its actual meaning.

      That’s what Parliament does. If it says unlawful sexual connection (which is always consensual, otherwise it would be sexual violation) is a serious violent offence, then it is. The only way to fix that is by Parliament amending the legislation. It is a condemnation of Parliament that a Court has to indulge in sophistry to get around the plain meaning of an Act in order to do what it considers to be justice, and equally it is a condemnation of the Court that it considers that its interpretation of justice is so inconsistent with Parliament’s intentions that it is prepared to indulge in sophistry to bring about a particular outcome.

        I do not think for one moment Parliament envisaged that unlawful connection would be ‘serious violent offending’. It is arguable that David Garrett and other supporters of Three Strikes indulged in sophistry by selling the Bill on the basis that it applied to ‘serious violent offending’ only.
        By the way it is worth noting that this weird interpretation applies only to the ‘three strikes’ aspect of the Sentencing Act. This interpretation is not applicable to any other part of the Sentencing Act or to any other Act of Parliament.
        Also ‘An enactment must be interpreted in accordance with its text and in the light of its purpose’. This section of the Interpretation Act applies right across the spectrum of all Acts, Regulations, etc. Arguably the Court of Appeal probably took this on board.

The next morning he wakes to find the goats still just standing around. One more try, he tells himself, and proceeds to load them up and drive them out to the woods. He spends all day shagging the goats and upon returning home, falls listlessly into bed.
The next morning, he cannot even raise himself from the bed to look at the goats. He asks his burqa enshrouded wife to look out and tell him if the goats are lying in the grass.

  Wharfies are paid well above minimum wage but when Liarbor signalled the unions had the go-ahead for higher wage rounds the horse bolted. It is already over the fence and running for it. The unions know they have the green light to take the employers for as much as they can squeeze them for.

They need to be compared to managers with enterprises of similar size and budget. You know, the ones that have to turn a profit or they are out the door. Then apparently principals are interrupted on average 70 times a day.

It’s worth repeating what a poster noted last night on KB and that is this Labour Youth camp was on the same day that the Australian Foreign Minister was making her first visit to NZ under this Labour Government, but Ardern felt it more important to go to the Labour Youth camp, rather than be at the dinner for the Australian Foreign Minister.

It really shows where Ardern’s priorities are, and it certainly isn’t putting her position as Prime Minister at the top. New Zealand is being poorly served by Ardern if she can get her priorities so wrong like this.

Apparently Minister Jenny Salesa is “hugely disappointed” in her travel expenses being so high and is “working on it”.

Sounds like someone working on an out of control drug problem. I hope she gets help.

How does someone with such little agency end up being a cabinet minister?

  There is more to this (but has been buried by the other big Labour scandal), which is media reported yesterday that Jacinda Ardern said 3 times at her post-cabinet press conference that Jenny Salesa’s travel expenses were unacceptable.
  
  Trouble is, Jenny Salesa’s office was off-message and issued a defiant “FU” response to the media saying that these expenses were part of her work etc.
  
  Media noted this (eg RNZ) saying Salesa’s office statements contradicted the PM’s views! Oh dear! But like I say Labour and the media now have bigger fish to fry!

Who in Cindy’s Office knew of the assaults and when ? H2 would have been on top of it asap.
So she says that she was swanning around the Pacific doling out largess so didn’t know.
So she and her office are out of control – not surprising as expected.
Which Senior Cabinet Minister was in the loop and still did not tell her ?
He/she should resign now.
Have an idea who he is but will leave that for now.

More seriously why were the police not called – there was underage alcohol and physical assaults took place.
I expect to hear very very soon of a so called young National supporter – female, who once had her bottom pinched at a Young Nats party, so we all do it.
This has serious implications which the media will try and hide like Cindy did this morning.
Cindy – it may get rough.
Understand there is more to come.

  The only criticism of these advanced trains is the ENORMOUS toilets aren’t ENORMOUS enough so disable people can use them as easily as able bodied peopled. Seriously, that is the issue.
  And being slightly wider, in a couple of tunnels they will come closer than the recommended clearance, which they are working on to fix.

      Millions have been spent. The reasons are as follows:
      
      1) The United States has charged Dotcom and others with criminal offences.
      
      2) We have an extradition treaty with the United States.
      
      3) The United States has sought their extradition.
      
      4) New Zealand courts have to decide whether there is a proper case for extradition, viz. is there sufficient evidence of an extradition offence.
      
      5) If there is a proper case their extradition will be ordered.
      
      6) Even if there is an order, the Justice minister can decide not to implement the order.
      
      7) 4,5 and 6 above are all subject to the judicial process in New Zealand, which has various procedural and appellate steps along the way.
      
      8) They have decided to strenuously oppose their extradition, as is their right.
      
      9) Justice doesn’t come cheap

Grant Robertson has been given a shovel by Michael Cullen, and is starting to dig an 11 Billion Dollar Hole!

Government MP’s are spending $10k a month on transport!

  The key point is they never expected to become The Government. They were taken by complete surprise. I have it on good authority there was terrific panic going on behind the scenes in the first few weeks as they scrambled to cobble together the semblance of a professional face for the public. They had a few things to do in the first 100 days, but had no actual planned initiatives after that. Ministers’ offices are not picking up the phone because the staff can’t provide responses. Roast Kirton – a bit gamey and tepid, needs a lot of sauce. Best served with marinated sprout balls.

Fried Mcintyre – get it while its still here. One serve only, this one’s not going to be repeated or offered again.

Blanched Ardern – this one lies a lot so it has a kind of limp taste. Needs to be served alone as is easily spoiled by being identified as part of the herd.

Not sure if it was incredibly bad logic or bad journalism or both.
Heard on the News earlier a report about cyclists and wearing helmets. The report starts by saying the number of tickets issued for not wearing helmets had dropped dramatically.
Then it goes on to talk about a push for a review on wearing helmets so it is not compulsory and the cyclists are going to have “protest” cycle in Wellington next weekend.
The report clearly linked the two things —how you could jump from one to the other is beyond me.

    IQ does show typical attainment levels and those non-Maori at 85 are not expected to be able to finish High School. Maori then at their -1 std deviation will be much much further down.

      As per my engagement with the likes of Chuck Bird, Nukuleka and EAD when they stick their head above the parapet, I don’t have a problem with a robust proactive approach with propagandists, agenda-setters, spray and walk away merchants, and threadjackers. And as also with them, and yes, as mikey implies, stephieboy deserves and needs regular kicking to make sure chaos doesn’t ensue.

  It’s a question I have been asking myself, I find myself feeling a little uncomfortable at times about his personal/real life being exposed, but I also cannot condone the way he treated some of the commentators who use their actual name, particularly Maggie.
  Stephie has a tendency to troll (badly) the guys, while he stalks and bullies the girls.

        Looks like Nivas (formerly Lada Nivas) are still being made in Russia – by Avto-Vaz (majority owned by the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance), with one model jointly produced by Avto-Vaz and General Motors.
        
        The Russian car industry (600,000 employees) is now part of the international industry with some parts brought in and others shipped out. Bit like Britain, which may make better cars, but doesn’t match Russian tanks.

        It was a very interesting read* and described the Labour MP’s very well. Because people were given the opportunity to respond and one could compare the two sides of the story (and see where the spin was applied) I’d say the accuracy is well up there.
        
        Liked the description of Young Labour activists (and “poor” Helen had it hard with them on her case haha)! Seems troughing and arts funding were handy weapons the last Labour Govt could deploy in their favor.
        
        If one steps back to look at the wider picture the article presents (which wasn’t its intention), it’s incredible how Labour has its supporters throughout society and certain sectors who “grass” back to the Party (no wonder why National had it tough going)!
        
        *Have yet to read the last couple of pages or so (as lost connection at the time and other things to do now) but did it explain who this “Peter” was? Eg someone connected to Chris Carter or the other one and only “First Peter” of NZ at the time? 🙂

The new series of “The Great British Bake Off” has just started on Prime…and there is no Sue Perkins, Mel Geidroyc or…Mary Berry! No Mary Berry?! Just Paul Hollywood. Google search says the producers decided to move their show from the BBC to Channel Four, and only Hollywood decided to join them.

Only bright note is that Channel Four’s most valuable asset, Cathy Newman, isn’t hosting. “So what you’re saying is that for your Show Stopper you want to bake transsexuals in your oven?” ?

Labour’s general secretary has confirmed he’s been told by Young Labour of a second sexual misconduct incident at a similar event to the one last month where four teenagers were allegedly assaulted.

Andrew Kirton was contacted by Young Labour on Monday night to say a woman had come forward saying she had been sexually assaulted at an event in the last ten years.

A tourist in Vienna is going through a graveyard and all of a sudden he hears music. No one is around, so he starts searching for the source.
He finally locates the origin and finds it is coming from a grave with a headstone that reads “Ludwig van Beethoven, 1770 – 1827”.
Then he realizes that the music is the Ninth Symphony and it is being played backward!
Puzzled, he leaves the graveyard and persuades a friend to return with him. By the time they arrive back at the grave, the music has changed. This time it is the Seventh Symphony, but like the previous piece, it is being played backward.
Curious, the men agree to consult a music scholar. When they return with the expert, the Fifth Symphony is playing, again backward.
The expert notices that the symphonies are being played in the reverse order in which they were composed, the 9th, then the 7th, then the 5th.
By the next day the word has spread and a crowd has gathered around the grave. They are all listening to the Second Symphony being played backward.

Just then the graveyard’s caretaker ambles up to the group.

Someone in the group asks him if he has an explanation for the music.

“I would have thought it was obvious” the caretaker says.

“He’s decomposing.”

China has put limits on foreigner numbers in restaurants in the student area in northern Beijing.

Police are checking to ensure student hang-outs are limited to containing no more than 10 foreigners at a time.
