    I was looking at an electronics magazine once, the colour photo on the cover was of a project that was a clock that told the time in morse code.

        Didn’t need crank handles. My family was on a party line for a period in the early 1970’s and the phone rang differently for each subscriber on the line. Took some getting used to and it was easy to pick up a phone call intended for someone else. That wasn’t very far out of Auckland though in an area that was, at the time, definitely rural.

  Exactly. I know the “sex scandal” has had a fair hiding this week but what Taxinda did or didn’t know has been scarcely touched. OK, she was away in the Pacific for some of the time between the time of the camp and the allegations being aired in the msm and her absence has been posed as the reason she didn’t know about what happened at the camp…but she is a pregnant woman and I’d be deeply surprised if she didn’t maintain her contacts with her doctor and/or midwife. She could have just as easily been in touch with her advisers in Wellington. I think she lied this week when confronted about the allegations, I say she has known since the infamous weekend camp. Yes, Taxinda bugger off!

      No, Chuck. As I pointed out to you yesterday, if you are looking to put a smoking gun in Ardern’s hand with the old “what did the Prime Minister know and when did she know it?” play, you need more than speculation about why she missed a weekly scheduled interview with Mike Hosking.
      
      In the meantime I’m sure (to quote you) “Taxinda/commie chick” is thankful you value logical debate instead of personal attacks. ?

    Now doggone, it wasn’t an official sex training camp, but it was an official booze up. This is from one of the attendees:-
    
    “He said partying was the unofficial purpose of the weekend, where about 60 people attended, including about 20 people under 18 and as young as 15.
    
    “It’s been spun as a conference gone bad, but it was really a weekend-long piss up, with no supervision of young people.
    
    “They chose that venue because it has a full-size walk-in chiller. A mountain of alcohol is absolutely correct. People could just go in and grab as much booze as they wanted. People were drinking within hours of arriving.” ”
    
    Worth reading the Herald article – heading “People were vomiting in the toilets and bushes from too much boozing at Young Labour Summer Camp.”
    
    And that – of course – reveals yet another level of disturbing behaviour at these Labour events. These kids were plied with so much booze that they vomited all over the place !

In his latest article he states “A drunken yobbo falling over four 16-year-olds and being deeply remorseful and unable to remember the groping the next day isn’t something you’d expect the Prime Minister to have to be fronting up to the nation on.” It seems the MSM has been smacked on the wrist by the COL and have been told to toe the party line.

    According to Mike Williams Labour has been running these camps for twenty years and it was there that they ‘discovered’ Jacinda. So she would have been seventeen years of age when the camps started, would have been a member of Young Labour and from there presumably progressed to the International Young Socialists.         Cell phones were around 20 years ago but they didn’t have cameras. At least I don’t think they did.
        As far as I remember the first phone with a camera was the Nokia 7650 in 2002. Had a 0.3MP resolution.
        Broadcasting a recording of the sound at a party wouldn’t have had quite the impact of video.

  If a public servant got drunk at a work function and sexually assaulted 4 work colleagues, the CE would be deeply involved. The State Services Commission would be involved and the person concerned would be fired.

Can anyone actually believe Ardern not knowing about the LP piss up when kermy@ferttman tweeted about it on 12 February!!! He said the scandal would make Darren Hughes seem like a fairy tale. So it has been out there since then. If she didn’t know she is dumber than a sack of hammers. Personally I think she is lying.

Not really sure Mark Mitchell scored a hit on Ron Mark yesterday. While I admit that the perceived use of an NH90 as his personal transport isn’t a good look, a deeper investigation shows that the transport appears to have been in relation to his work as the Minister of Defence. It’s a bit hard to get a ministerial limo to HMNZS CANTERBURY at sea, or to the Chatam Islands for the funeral of the last officer of the Maori batallion.

You would have thought that Marks would have been taken to the departure point of the helo rather than have the helo pick him up and drop him off at home though.

Having said that, it’s a smart move by the Air Force to take an outspoken critic of the NH90 and convert him in this manner!

  The NH90 was used to fly to Waiouru and Woodbourne.
  He could have made other arrangements to get there. He’s not that busy.
  Those NH90’s are a pretty big machine.
  What’s the hourly operating cost? Must be heaps

    NZ Air Force operate 5 or more AgustaWestland AW109 helicopters which are especially suited to personnel transport – designed as commuter aircraft and used extensively overseas for corporate trips. Carry up to 8 including 2 pilots. These helicopters would be cheaper to run per hour by a factor of 10 at least.
    
    NH90’s are are just a ridiculous answer for what he states they we used for.

      Problem is they probably don’t have the range for the Chathams, and they are not rated for the flight deck of a ship.
      
      I wouldn’t mind if they were used to drop Winston off at home, as long as they didn’t land to do it!

        The only flights in the NH90 were to Waiouru and Woodbourne.
        Both places he could have used other means to get to.
        It’s pretty disgraceful really as it’s a huge waste of money

    native plant nurseries dotted all around the country doing good work revegetating our degraded landscapes.

        I think she’s explained before about manuka and Australia’s version.
        
        I think I read years ago that the beech trees that dominate Fiordland and used to dominate Southland are also native to Chile (as are Bluff oysters).
        
        According to NZ Encyclopedia, kauri (Agathis australis, of the ancient conifer family, Araucariaceae) is:
        
        …. one of three still-existing southern hemisphere genera of Araucariaceae, and is thought to have evolved in the Australia–New Zealand region.         For the next 10 years there will be a need for native plants to be part of the Billion programme…
        so nursery workers and folks planting and releasing the young plants (ie. weed, pest control).
        
        Remember this is not all productive timber forestry planting… some of it will be erosion , riparian, native bush enrichment, etc.
        
        2.Sustainable timber industry with Natives…
        Yep, if we are prepared to change things a bit… work with different harvesting regimes (as they do in other countries).
        That means organising different species and growing regimes
        Poplars 12 -15 years to harvest)
        Radiata Pine – 23-25 years to harvest
        Other pines, Cypresses – 35years
        Douglas Fir – 45 years
        Totara, tanekaha… 40-60 years
        Redwoods 50-80 years
        Native beech, miro, rimu, kauri.. 60 – 100 years
        
        Radiata would still be backbone of the industry…. but natives should be part of the picture.
        
        NZForest Service was working on native species forestry back in 70s…. a little bit of work continues, but there could have been much more progress in the last 40 years if the NZFS hadn’t been dismantled.

        But the Beech trees have evolved into distinct species on each of the Gondwanan land rafts.

      I agree it’s a hell of a lot of money to pour into one native plant nursery.
      Having been involved with a number of volunteer native plant nurseries over the years, I know how easy it is to raise thousands of native trees on the smell of an oily rag… and discarded milk cartons.
      
      However looks like the Minginui Nursery is working in conjunction with Scion, so here’s hoping quality material is produced from the nursery and all care is taken with getting the plants into the ground.

Donald Trump has put tariffs on imported steel and imported aluminium to the United States. This was met by universal horror from the chattering class. However Donald Trump has been going on about this since the 1980s. He believes that America is being ripped off and that the current international order promotes free trade that is neither free nor fair.

Those with a few minutes might want to read this from American greatness. The takeaway is that America is losing its high-tech industries overseas and that China is ripping off its intellectual property. America will only do well if it maintains and builds its high-tech industries.

I think this is important for New Zealand as well. I see railway trains fall of unprocessed logs being exported overseas. Meanwhile all our technology is imported. Was it really good for New Zealand to lose all of our manufacturing industries in the 1980s? Is it possible the Rogernomics economic experiment was bad for our long-term future because we killed off our manufacturing and technology industries? I think this is a question worth really discussing.

  There is no point trying to sell processed timber overseas if no one will buy it. The odds are i would be too expensive.
  Quite a bit of NZ manufacturing industries were turkeys. Former NZ Electricity had to pay THREE TIMES as much for a locally made large transformer than for an equivalent imported one.
  The trick is to find manufacturing niches that are profitable in their own right eg dairy processing or concentrate on service industries instead.

    This will get me down ticks but i think timber is another dud industry. A good chunk of that land could be put to better use running dairy and meat while putting some back into native blocks to help offset the environmental impact. iirc Land Corp were doing dairy conversions on marginal forestry blocks so there was good returns to be made until the Greenies started wigging out.

Planting of marginal land was a major driver of the farm forestry growth as well as the potential of safe retirement planning. A mature pine tree can stay uncut until it at it best cut/market level or demand driven for continuity of supply.

    Sure peterwn while the export of processed timber from NZ is minimal it more of a niche product and always a possible inclusion in any FTA. Here in the Philippines first grade (clears) of treated NZ pine is so far ahead of any other offered that those in need accept the price tag.
    It can never compare with the log trade volume but it must be understood it was an industry decision to plan, grow and harvest logs for that export trade. Imagine if there had been less planning in that industry back in the day to mean missing such a valuable export. Sadly their latter day planning falls short like regional infrastructure so the funded NZF to have NZ taxpayers carry the can.

The Interviewer however did not bring this up even when Winston stated that “Trade” with Russia would have no effect on any UE or UK deals.

    But when a newspaper is printing in English, or a broadcaster is broadcasting in English surely the English-language name should be used.
    
    Similarly, if its a TV station, radio station, or print publication in Maori, then Child, Youth and Family should be called Oranga Tamariki.
    
    Having a name for each language is fine, but demanding one of the two official names be used for both is wrong.
    
    When English-language outlets choose to use the Maori versions of dual-language names, they are being politically correct, even cravenly politically correct.

So last night, news outlets in the country shutdown the Labour party scandal and instead focused on Thompson & Price. Focusing on how evil they are by monitoring Greenpeace. But when you put it into context that Greenpeace is trying to shut down oil & gas exploration, which cost millions of dollars per day and a mediocre find of 1b barrels is $US64b to the NZ economy. Using Thompson & Price may actually be money well spent.

Housing Minister Phil Twyford wants a “significant” number of KiwiBuild houses to be prefabricated and is welcoming the help of overseas companies in this area.

But he is reluctant to speculate on how many houses constitutes “significant” and to what extent the Government will be enlisting the help of foreign companies.

Last week, Twyford told Prefab NZ’s Auckland conference that the Government’s 100,000 KiwiBuild homes goal was not possible without the use of prefabricated homes – houses that are built in factories and then assembled on site.

So the PM campaigned on “my generation” but needs a whole lot of ‘old’ people to help her run the show. So if we are to believe that the ‘my generation’ are so much smarter than we are, then I’d like her to comment on a tweet by Anika Moa where she is dressed up as a baby sucking on a bottle and the comments are “Anika Moa giving Clark a tip on how to manage being a dad….I just pooped my pants….need help”. Gayford is standing on one side of her not looking that comfortable. This tweet is not particularly funny and all it does is display Moa’s uncouthness. The tweet appears to have disappeared btw. So this Anika Moa, who has now infiltrated Seven Sharp is a really good person to associate yourself with Mr Gayford?
She says in another tweet on 9.2.18 in response to a Spark ad “#thankstoyou #mymama for letting me be who I wanted and never judging who I love. For always allowing me to be myself. A dyke on a bike. A lesby. A muff diving rug muncher (once a month cos we got kids).” So if I was you Gayford, I’d be more selective about the people you hang with. Show some respect to your parter and her position as PM. Your judgement of what constitutes a bit of class and style is somewhat lacking. We are generally judged on the company we keep.

If I was the PM, I’d instruct Moa and TVOne NOT to air this particular episode. Utter trash! How low do people stoop trying to be funny?
