So Stephen Joyce is threatening to sue Matthew Hooton and NBR over a recent article in NBR critical of Stephen. Interestingly the paywalled article of 2 March headed ‘Joyce Sacking First Test of Bridges’ Leadership’ is still up on the web site (as at 7.30am). Seemed Matthew either got wind of Stephen Joyce’s allegedly poor leadership vote or Matthew pulled the figure out of his backside.
Either way Stephen Joyce’s threat to sue says more about him than Matthew. If he wants to help see the National Party to victory in 2020 he should just shrug it off and get on with business, no one would care less next week. By threatening to sue he is merely damaging National’s chances in 2020 and this casts serious aspersions of his continuing ability to hold senior office in National’s caucus.

In other words his ego seems to be getting in the way of his judgement. Perhaps Simon has already read to Stephen his horoscope (to use the Royal Navy expression) and it is not good. If I was in Simon’s shoes I would now bluntly tell him I would like to see the next list candidate come into the House.

That the NBR article is still up indicates that NBR is not particularly concerned with Stephen’s threat – in any case Stephen would have the obstacles in the Lange v Atkinson case to surmount.
One other cause of concern – either there is loose lips in Caucus or worse still a malicious leak. This is not very good for Party unity. Caucus members should not discuss what goes on in the caucus room with partners, friends etc and need to remember that ‘Loose Lips Sink Ships’ (the British WW2 poster).

      Ministers dont run SOEs. They have their own board of worthies, who only have ‘governance’ as well.
      
      Only 2 government ‘departments’ are Ministers allowed to direct the secretary/manager/CEO. Thats Corrections and SIS.

Walker quibbling over tedious details of “Janes Fighting Ships”, all designed to provide a cheap “gotcha” (which Muldoon wants to address), to give the false implication Muldoon didn’t know what he was talking about, and there wasn’t the real possibility of Soviet ships in the South Pacific. Right, so you want to run the lazy “McCarthy Witch Hunt!” trope you lazy, BBC plummy-mouthed pric? So expect kick back from a moderate right wing conservative who always considered the l eft used unfair and deceitful means. To undermine good and inclusive democratic government and policy decisions-making.
        
        Walker deservedly got his arse handed to him, first for wasting Muldoon’s time, but more seriously, for wasting his audience’s time, and treating them like gullible idiots.         And how exactly (justified adverb!) did Muldoon “bully” journalists and others? By rolling in tanks like it was Prague, 1968, or Santiago, 1973? Nope. By suspending habeas corpus, or car bombing his critics? Nope. By holding them accountable with facts in free debate? Yep. Must have been a massive bullying campaign using “menacing silences” (sic), or answers and rebuttals highlighting the short comings in the other person’s ideas, arguments and policies, especially if they were other politicians, professional trained media inquisitors, or zealous unrepresentative pressure groups seeking to hijack government with their agendas. How ever did democracy survive the 1975-84 tenure of Robert David Muldoon?!
        
        Shit, even the myth of the martyred Colin Moyle overlooks the fact that that night, under parliamentary privilege, Labour first attacked Muldoon and his private business colleagues. And as usual, they started it, and brought a knife to a gun fight.
        
        But then that was typical of Muldoon’s critics, usually the first to start the fight, (even their accusation he was a “counter puncher” highlighted their cowardice when he refused to take their shit and took the fight straight back to them) and fling around unsubstantiated accusations that he was some far right dictator, yet melting like snow cones in the sun when the kick back came.
        
        And I note you’ve brought no specific or detailed accusations of substance to back you claims about Muldoon, except the Pavlovian “Rob’s Mob”. Fuck, fancy that, a populist politician having a popular political following. What a threat to democracy! Thought you would at least have mentioned the “Dancing Cossacks”… ?
        
        Come on, ztev, double down and try “the 1981 Springbok tour”, that awful affront to NZ democracy, where, shock, horror, Kiwis were allowed decide with whom they played sport. Oh, the humanity!! ?

    No, you won’t get taxed on your family home if it is say worth less than $2M, but your Kiwisaver will be indirectly taxed since the entities your Kiwisaver fund has invested in would pay Wealth Tax.
    Anyway left wingers forget it is not only the ‘rich’ who would bear the brunt of a Wealth Tax – ordinary people would bear the brunt too. So if Helen Clark for example decides to sell her six investment houses because of a Wealth Tax, that is six houses off the rental market. Conversely if a landlord holds on to them the landlord will over time recover what he pays in Wealth Tax from increased rents.

    Yes – it is called an Unrealised Capital Gain.
    It is like an additional rates bill calculated annually on the perceived capital gain on your property and sent along with the rates.
    So if it determined by EXPERTS that the value of your property has risen say 4% (from Valuartios Department) then you will pay a tax based upon the mathematically calculated value of your house.

  The stupid thing is that the working group is specifically precluded from considering a CGT on domestic housing, which is just going to push investment in, and therefore prices of, that asset up. And if a CGT is levied on shares, that will hit almost all Kiwisaver accounts, so I can’t see that being popular.

So Ardern who never tells lies – wants to control what the public gets to see and hear.

There’s Employment Minister Willie Jackson who doesn’t even know what the media wage is, and of course there’s Chris Hipkins, the reverse of King Midas turning everything he touches to shit.
      
      One of these will be the first Minister to fall, and from there they will topple like dominoes because the talent pool in Labour is as shallow as a carpark puddle on a hot summer’s day. Just picks up a few key words and goes for it. There is probably an official name for that syndrome. A very poor listener all the same. I picked that up from her appearances on the campaign trail.     Then they could just do as they like behind closed doors and issue a few media releases from time to time to advise of latest decisions made.
    Most people don’t listen to/watch Parliament. Fewer people are reading anything. Many want to get their knowledge by other means.

      In principle I’d agree with you but if they only want to be on to discuss topics they nominate that is just another form of propaganda.
      Mike has a large listener base –if he fills the gap with Opposition people we will certainly hear about what is going on. It will not be the Government doing as they like behind closed doors.
      The discussions that Mike had weekly, with Steven Joyce and Annette King during the last Government were reasonably informative and often entertaining so it can be done. Similarly when he had the PM and the leader of the opposition on –you would never say they were in depth or abrasive conversations.

So what does South Africa’s change of President really mean? Part 4

The Zulus II

First off, I would like to reiterate that I am not, and have never considered myself an authoritative source. Have a look at other sources and make your own judgment. History is very much open to interpretation and those interpretations can be very different depending on which cultural and temporal lens we view them through. Worst is when events are taken out of context and are bent to fit an agenda.

History is often sanitized and simplified to help support a particular agenda. My goal is to expose some of the mess that makes things a bit more interesting.

Fast forward to the modern day…. Zuma has been President for 8 years or so and King Goodwill Zwelithinihas been king since 1968. The king is in many ways ceremonial, but is also head of the whole Zulu nation including the Ingonama Trust – and area comprising over 30% of Kwa Zula Natal and home to about 4 million Zulus. Those 4 million people pay rent so he holds a position similar to that of a feudal king.

The king has a lavish lifestyle in comparison to his people, but that is not resented – he is their king, he is their nation. He is supported not only through the trust, but also my millions of dollars of taxpayer money. He has six wives (restrained by historic standards) and each has their own palace.

Zuma is from Inkhandla – about 100km from the king’s residence. Zuma has ploughed significant amounts of taxpayer into upgrading Inklandla (both the area and his private residence). Although he claimed this was for security etc, much of it was clearly feathering his own nest.

Zuma has long curried favour with both the king and the Zulu people. This has given him a massive support base that still continues even after he has been removed as President. For example, one thing he did was issue a lot of taxpayer aid in the region (food blankets etc), branded with ANC, and his own, image. While this is clear voter bribery, it can also be viewed as a form of tribute to the Zulu people – the ANC giving tribute to Zulus to show a degree of subservience to the Zulus.

Zuma is now open to prosecution on numerous corruption charges. I doubt they will go anywhere significant because he still has that much influence with the Zulus that he can threaten civil unrest etc if he is imprisoned. Most likely outcome, I think, will be some ineffective sentence like house arrest.

The ANC, having communist associations and roots, has a huge problem with the king. Communists hate kings because they hate royalty in general, but also because they have strong loyalty from the people and thus political power.

Zuma has been a bridge between the Zulus and the ANC that has kept up the degree of Zulu support of the ANC as well as reduce historic tensions. South Africa is fiercely tribal and when a non-Zulu is head of the ANC, the Zulu sees that as a non-Zulu telling them what to do.

Ramaphosa is obviously not Zulu. You can tell that from the first syllable of his name. isiZulu does not have the “r” sound. That will immediately irk many Zulus every time his name comes up.

While we have talked of the Zulu king here, there are actually about six other tribal kingdoms within South Africa, but the others are of lesser influence. The picture is already very messy, but that makes it even more messy.

As the land issue heats up, it is becoming more obvious that it is not just about taking land away from the whites and giving it back to blacks. That is just the very simple message being portrayed to the Western media. The ANC not only has white owned land in its sights, but also customary tribal lands like Ingonyama Trust. This is clearly intended to break the powers of the kings so that the ANC can take it.

Recently the ANC has directed its ire to the “beneficiaries of colonialism”. That is a very deliberate term. This is wider than just the whites. It also includes the kings who are seen to have been supported by, and benefited from, colonialism.

So Ramaphosa now finds himself between a rock and a hard place: On the one side he must move fast and decisively to defuse the claims of the EFF that he is just a white man’s puppet. On the other, he needs to be cautious because upsetting the kings – particularly the Zulu king – can lead to both loss of support for the ANC as well as increased civil unrest.

The political rhetoric is not happening in a vacuum either. South Africa has high unemployment – looking to get worse – and is having increasing problems with feeding itself. That is rapidly changing for the worse.

To a man with a full belly, politics is just theory. When he is starving it becomes survival and things can turn very ugly very quickly.

There is some talk (eg. The above link) that suggests the UN might go into blue helmet mode. But as we saw in Rwanda etc, they are very ineffective in actually controlling violence. If they could not control Rwanda ( 11 million, people, 26000 square km), then what hope do they have in South Africa (5 times the population and forty times the area)?

  Have you not really explained why the ANC is not proposing land reform but just confiscation of white owned land?
  
  For white land owners the question is can they on-sell their land before it is confiscated and if so to who? Those allowed to buy up land on the cheap (and keep it) will make a killing – the opportunity for corruption is strong on this one.
  
  And one presumes there is a business for someone removing farm houses to new locations (off farm) and every reason for stock to be sold off etc.

    All good in theory, but who is going to:
    A) buy the land and
    B) give loans for the land.
    
    Why would anyone sink money into a farm that is going to be taken away from you? Even if you are black and buy from a white, they can easily still say that you got ownership of the land illegally and thus take it away anyway.

    The Xhosa and Zulu were coming down the coast centuries back (into their bantustan areas). The “Afrikaner” ancestors just arrived in the southern coast first and then went into the interior, OFS and Transvaal (where most of the farmland in question is).
    
    The idea that those who arrived by sea, as opposed by land along the coast took the interior land off black Africans is one that can be challenged in international forums.

I have a few problems with the online census.

1 It needs a save and resume later option (like some WINZ forms) so that you can come back later to answer some questions.

2 How will they know they have got every house, and garage, and sleep out, and rural houses etc.

3 Many people will not give correct answers as they will be worried about a call from WINZ or the IRD.

4 How many people were fined last time for not filling it in?

  It will be fascinating to see the outcome. I don’t know what the response rate was in 2013. I think they will be lucky to get 90 percent. There just are not the resources to chase down a large cohort of missing people in any reasonable time frame.

    The job is a farce. It needs to be scrapped ASAP & consigned to the dustbin of history.
    
    The role starts with the premise that there is a huge problem between the races (& it is all YTs fault) and that it is only through the skilled handling of the likes of Devoy (or whoever is in that role) that there is not some kind of civil war between the races.
    
    The reality is that New Zealand was a far, far happier place before the Politicians and the changes they wrought made people start to see everything through a “race” prism (except YT of course – Pakeha parties and European Students Associations of course being verboten….)

I picked up the trashy NZ Womens’ Weekly yesterday while out and about and came across a piece of sanitised bullshit re Tracey Martin.
And, to my horror, she appears to wearing those same god damn awful ankle strap shoes that the PM wears. I did a double-take when my eyes zoomed in on ‘those’ shoes. She’s obviously been dressed by the makeover squad and, I have to say, not very inspiring either. As far as I’m concerned, Tracey Martin is so underwhelming that, once again, just proves what an incompetent lot make up the COL.
How the hell do these people make it into Parliament?

We are made aware of the ~~threat,~~ ~~risk,~~ ~~possibility,~~ chance of a super-size tidal wave swamping the NZ east coast, with poor old Christchurch most vulnerable. Within 10 minutes, it would sweep miles inland, leaving fuck all of Christchurch and probably drowning at least scores of thousands of people.

But the whole east coast of the country would be hit.

Do insurers and re-insurers read this stuff? Up go our premiums!

It used to be the religious who preached on street corners, “The end is nigh.”

Still, in Christchurch for decades we took scant notice of the engineers who were warning about liquefaction. Not that I heard of anyone drowning in it.

    Tsunamis of that size & more have struck NZ before Maggy. There’s a NZ Geographic article that mentions kauri trees, metres in diameter , lying east west which have been snapped off at ground level. A tsunami capable of that wouldn’t leave much of NZ standing.
    
    There’s also mention of a tsunami originating at the Kermadics that struck northern NZ in 1420. It was 45 metres in height at Hendersons Bay (just north of Pukenui).

  Missed his name on the news item earlier, another Maori chap in for attempted murderer will be released from the prison today as his sentence has been served and he is released into an unsuspecting community even though he is a threat to others and himself. This sperm donor of 3 children attacked his kids with a machete and knife, and it is believed he will do it again if he can find them.
  The family have moved from their home, essentially gone into hiding from this dangerous and pathetic individual.
  Bet he will be back behind bars for hurting someone else in the not too distant future.

    But surely the UK government should have considered the option of leveraging the vote to get such terms? Or a continuance in the single market on such terms – the money saved in such available for the health budget …

I heard this being discussed on Leighton Smith just before noon. He asked people to ring in and say what she thought should be her penalty. About three women rang and thought she should have got no penalty.

We of course do not know the full facts. Having said that I can sympathize with her situation. I agree with some of the callers that the sister and ex should not have called the police but made it clear that there would be no more violence. However, I think if the judge did not impose some penalty it would have been a sexist penalty. If it was a brother instead of a sister he probably would have been charged with male assaults female.

I wonder what women on KB think of the sentence.

However, Judge Barkle believed there needed to be a punitive element to the sentence despite the circumstances of the case.

A bid for permanent name suppression was made at the hearing by Rai but this was declined by the judge.

    The problem with Smith going is that there would be a by-election. The Greens were bequeathed a large sum of money specifically for the Nelson electorate, and could well take the seat from National, as Smith has a very strong personal following that a new candidate would have to replicate.

Another piece of news is a monumental cock-up from the Ministry of Children. An informant is in a very precarious situation as a result of a letter being sent to the wrong person. In a nutshell, someone has made a report to the Ministry about some unsavoury goings on and the idiots in the Ministry have sent a letter to the very people who were being complained about and the subject of an investigation. Letter should have gone to the informant. Buck stops at the top eh Tracey? How are you going to justify this one.

Is this appropriate for a visiting PM or a political foreign affairs foot-in-the-mouth moment, potentially showing a closer relationship to one Island more than another?

  Please tell us stephieboy why it is OK for other countries to have tariffs on Chinese steel but not the US. Just to remind you both the UK and the EU increased their tariffs last year.
  Just saw on the BBC that the USA has a 2% tariff in EU cars but the EU tariff on USA cars is 10%.

It looks like Kim Jung Un wants to have talks with the USA.
And it even looks like Trump is saying they could have talks, even with no guarantee of NK de-nuclaristaions.

This is good. It shows the sanctions are working.
If I were the USA
I would not humiliate Fat Boy

But I would insist and complete supervised destruction of all their nuclear facilities.
And I would also insist of the withdrawal of of all of the NK artillery near the border back well out of range. And the destruction of all the hidden hard shelters.
Then I would lift the sanctions and offer them economic help.
Otherwise NK will just use this to buy more time.
InN the meantime, keep the sanctions going and stop the Chinese and Russian ships (and all the rest)

I’m open to whether the comment ticking feature should remain here, or should be removed. … It may be that most people think that ticking is ok and largely harmless and adds to the flavour of Your NZ. Or ticking may be seen as not very useful and too open to abuse. If there is strong support for Nero ticking to remain then I may just leave it on. If there is strong support for removing it then I will turn it off, at least for a trial period. If opinion is mixed I may turn Nero ticking off for a period, and then re-evaluate, possibly through another discussion. I may support a minority view if there are good arguments that ticking deters some participation.
