Stevie Wonder’s playing an intimate gig in a Japanese club. Before he starts he asks for any requests.
A little Japanese man at the front jumps up and down shouting “Pray a Jazz Chord! Pray a Jazz Chord!”
Impressed by the little man’s knowledge of his musical history and prowess, Stevie and the band crack into a 5 minute Jazz extravaganza in F#.
As they finish the little man is still jumping up and down shouting “Pray a Jazz Chord! Pray a Jazz Chord!”.
Perturbed but determined to impress, Stevie leads the band into another 5 minute jam in C minor. As they come to a close the little man shouts again “No! Pray a Jazz Chord!”
Pissed off at this point Stevie shouts at the little man telling him if he thinks he can do better to come up an play himself!
The little man climbs up on stage and sits at the piano, and as he starts to play he sings:
“A jazz chord, to say, I ruuuuv vouuuuu”

Now DO sing along because you WILL, and nothing you can do will stop it.

Never mind ‘capitalism failing’. Democracy has failed.

In a well meaning attempt to include more voices in the democratic process our small but advanced little country in the Pacific introduced the MMP voting system.

The unforeseen result of this was the recent seizure of power by a group of ecomaniacs and crypto-communists riding on the back of a venal and drunken man who, with 8% of the vote, used his leverage to settle old scores and feather his nest.

Although dressed up as ‘democracy’ this is actually the way banana republics work, when a small group holds power in defiance of the bulk of the population, its traditions and its values.

This group is following the path of all banana republics with disastrous policies now being initiated by decree without forewarning or any sort of consultation with the people.

Democracy has failed.

    You’re correct. I was rounding up from 7.6%, but I see that it was only 7.2% in the final count.
    
    I didn’t vote for NZF but I think it’s a little unfair to brand them all as cunts, although that word certainly applies to their leader. Maybe morons would be a better description.
    
    Alarm bells have always warned me off NZF as the cunt Peters has often said that he wouldn’t reveal ‘who he will go with’ until after the election results are in. That has always been a bad sign of his untrustworthyness IMHO. By his own actions he has always shown that he’s only in it for his own gain.
    
    Anyway, 7% or 8%. Either way, its a disaster for our country.

  Sorry to bring you up to speed here, Dave, but democracy has not failed when it doesn’t deliver the result you like. Let the term play out and then we can have another crack at the democratic process. The way these idiots are going, something tells me even more of the electorate might prefer the devil they knew, rather than the one they didn’t. After all, given the complexity of the modern state, and the multitude of interests of its people, no government is going to be ‘perfect’, and even if it were ‘perfect’ for one small part of the electorate, that very fact would make it imperfect for the rest of it.

    I can see your point Random and I would normally agree with you…. except that in this case the government was not formed on ‘policy’, but rather on the venal machinations of a single man who had lost his own electorate seat and only got 7.2% party vote. He then appointed a cabal of fuckwits who clearly don’t have the interests of their own country at heart.
    
    These assholes are not even pretending to act democratically, as the recent O&G fiasco shows.

        Most NZ governments have had at least 2 terms and it’s rare for a government to be voted out after only one term. Agreed, the circumstances of this ‘government’ are unusual…. but just think of the damage they can do in 6 years if they carry on at this rate?

        I wouldn’t count on it.
        As shown in the recent polls, the support for the combined CoL vote has not really shifted and National continues to be well below the required vote, with no friends.
        
        This rabble will hold on to power for everything it will take – despite the many differences between their three parties. They will each swallow dead rats to keep the coalition together.
        
        Power provides benefits – and the trough is deep.
        
        The only thing I can see saving NZ is if either the Greens or NZF fall below the 5% threshold on election day – although if this is looking likely then Labour will counter it by gifting NZF an electorate seat, thereby maintaining the balance of MMP power.

    JJ, the Army and Police are sworn to serve the government. Not the people. This means they will carry out the orders of who is in power.
    
    History has shown that a countries police and army will carry out atrocities when called upon to do so. The only reason police and soldiers are not taking people off to gulags and torture chambers in New Zealand is simply because no one has asked them to. You are dreaming if you think the people wearing costumes and carrying guns are there to protect you.
    
    You might want to also ponder that much of the army is staffed by Maori and might not side with you even if they did break ranks.

    Gun regulations, fine. I’m a gun owner and I support some level of gun regulation.
    
    But tightening up on the generally law abiding people that own guns legally is not going to stop the crims who own guns illegally.
    
    Anyway there’s not much point in there being more laws if the cops don’t use the existing laws properly.
    
    All more laws do is impinge on the law abiding, not the crims.

      No skyblue bene day is Tuesday thus to be available Tuesday at the ATM it is available after midnight Monday. (Banks update accounts at midnight) It is also why when a public holiday falls on a Monday benefits are paid earlier on the Friday or in the case of Easter the Thursday.

Looking forward to the next ANZ business confidence survey. Should be interesting to see how much it’s gone down following the O&G announcement.

From people I’ve talked to they’re holding off planned investments now, instead holding those funds and considering funnelling them to allow for a downturn. Always a problem when business feels like a downturn is coming in the economy and hence being negative on the prospects of their own business, and not just the wider economy.

    The NRA does not regulate or deregulate.
    They are a lobby group and a very efective one.
    
    Americans have long understood that regulation no matter how reasonable it seems is just the thin end of the wedge, they resist it and rightly so.
    Various Fedral and state laws prohibit the possesion of firearms by the mentally ill.

    On the other hand, I do understand the words “shall not be infringed” when written in a constitutional document.     I’m more concerned about how soon we’re going to institute a complete and total ban on assault lorries and assault vans. Equally as 13000 US youngsters die every year due to texting when driving I’m keen to see how the ban on assault cellphones is picked up by libtards as they will if they’re serious about saving young lives.     No dipstick, my kid is 9 and in year 5. He has not been taught how to tell the time at school and still does not know how to tell the time properly. A friend’s child, age 10 and in year 6 is the same. Seems the current curriculum does not include learning to tell the time or using analogue clocks.
    
    I started school in 1966 and learned to tell the time while in the Primers (2nd year).
    
    Not alt-right fantasy, modern reality.

      According to the NZ Maths syllabus, kids should be introduced to Time and its measurement in Years 4 and 5 (Levels 2 & 3 of the NZ Curriculum). So a 9-10 year old should not only know how to read the time from analogue clocks, they should be able to perform some time calculations.

        Maggot, thx. It shows how much the curriculum has been watered down over the years, when telling the time is not taught until year 5. As I say, I learned to tell the time in the Primers, because my parents wouldn’t give me a watch until I could & I got my first watch when I was 7 (Standard 1).         I’m sure my brothers got theirs around the same age.
        
        One of my literacy boys (age 13) was sporting a most impressive digital watch… when I had a closer look, I told him that he hadn’t put the watch ahead for Daylight saving.
        He asked me to do it for him…
        I pointed to the analogue clock above us, checked my analogue watch and told him that the clock was correct and he could do it himself.
        He told me that he couldn’t read the clock….
        I told him I didn’t know which buttons to press on his watch to set the time.

He highlights the problem of the speed to build roads. Just because he has a pot of money, doesn’t mean he can avoid the RMA & due diligence in processes.

Jones looks like a loose cannon that is going to keep on giving.

  We had bad mould in a rental we were in many years ago. A mitsubishi dehumidifier sucked out all the moisture and sorted the problem. It also has a laundry setting on it which is awesome if you don’t have a drier.

  Having said that, some New Zealand houses seem badly designed. And the climate doesn’t help.
  
  I lived in a rental where the built in wardrobe was in an external wall. So the wardrobe became freezing. Mould would form all over the clothes and the back of the wardrobe. Condensation was running down the wardrobe. My shoes went green. It was simply a spectacular design flaw.
  
  I tried everything. The mould returned as fast as I could get rid of it. I had to leave. Landlord refused to acknowledge the problem.

Now anecodetally it may seem like the crime rate is higher, number of reports in the media about dairy roberies, train taggings, report over ever more braisen criminality, courts fully booked out, corruption at the top which appears to go unprosecuted and the fact that the average criminal has 42 violent convinctions before getting to prison, but honest to god, the politicans tell us we have less crime than ever!!!

And these are all labour, national, greens, even winston peters honourable people! They are our rulers and they would never lie to us! So what I am suggesting, since what they say is the truth (even if their response calling for more policemen and more prisons runs contradictory to that truth) is to signifcantly reduce the numbers of policemen, the numbers of judges, to shut down smaller courts and police stations, because clearly with crime at such a low level and declining at such a rate, there is now no longer a need for this many policemen and judges!

After the initial downsizing of say 50% I suggest that they draw straws each year (since crime rates are continuing to fall), and the 10th straw or whatever ratio gets fired, you know make a game of it and all, but in a fair way!

NUNES: As you know, we are investigating the State Department, we think there are some major irregularities at the State Department, and we’re trying to figure out how this information about Papadopoulos, of all people, who was supposedly met with some folks in London, how that made it across to the FBI’s hands.

We know a little bit about that because of what some of the State Dept. officials themselves have said about that.

So we were glad to get this behind us, but as we peel another piece back, it leaves more unanswered questions.

MARIA BARTIROMO: You’re telling us that in order for the FBI and DoJ to launch an investigation into so-called collusion between Trump and the Russians, there was no intelligence used? So I don’t understand, how did this investigation start?

NUNES: I think that is the point. We don’t understand, we’ve never understood. We don’t have access to these finished intelligence products, and we’ve never seen one. We thought maybe one went through a different channel that was kept really secret… well, in fact, after our investigators reviewed this, there was no Five Eyes intelligence product, as has been reported. There was no product. And I think that is a major problem…

At the highest level, what is this about? A counterintelligence operation that was at the height of the political campaign, where you opened up an investigation, using these intelligence services to spy on the other campaign, it is really serious stuff…

I can tell you we know longtime associates of Hillary Clinton, including Sidney Blumenthal and Corey Shearer, were actively giving information to the State Dept. that was making its way to the FBI… So we know this was at least from two witnesses, and so we’re trying to piece all that together.

There was no official intelligence that was used to start this investigation, we know that Sidney Blumenthal and others wee pushing information into the State Department.

Spare us! The sports team members of the sinking Hooerald have become experts on race relations. Or at least one has.

Chris Rattue, who bombards readers with his weird views on rugby, criticises Steve Hanson for not being able to get his mouth around the name of Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi.

Would Rattue criticise the English pronunciation of an ethnic Tongan or perhaps even a Maori struggling to pronounce an English-language name? I doubt it.

Chinese migrants everywhere often use dual names – one easier in the language of where they have settled, be it Malaysia or America or New Zealand. They keep their old names. Mei-lei might be known among her Kiwi workmates and friends as Mary, for example. Many Maori have done something similar in the past and may still do so.

It’s not being submissive to racists, but practical. Just as someone with an English name others find a mouthful are happily known by a shorter form. How many “Arches” are addressed as “Archibald” of even “Bills” as “William”.

For most English speakers, Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi is a mouthful, and like it or not English is the lingua franca of Rugby. Does Rattue expect the commentators of Australia, England, Scotland, Ireland, to be 100 per cent correct in pronouncing this player’s name? At a glance, it looks to have six syllables. That alone will reduce the number of times he is mentioned.

But is there another reason why Chris Rattue has criticised Hansen on this issue? How do you pronounce “Rattue”? Was he tormented as “Ratty” in his school days?

  Probably not. But, that’s extrapolating what he has was writing about beyond its logical extereme, however. That is – he was writing about New Zealanders, in New Zealand, pronouncing Maori names. That, you would expect, most citizens could at least have a go at.

    No, it’s an international game – one of the few that New Zealanders are at the top of or near the top of. If you are talking about the All Blacks, you need to take overseas rugby into consideration.
    
    Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi’s name might make it harder for him to get a professional job overseas later, if that’s what he wants. Even France and Japan are reasonably familiar with English, but this name ( when forenames are included about 10 or 11 syllables) will be more than a mouthful in those countries.

        That’s an easy name for an English-language announcer to get his or her tongue around. SGA produces the name in the Serbian alphabet.
        
        In the English alphabet it is Sergei Milinkovich-Savich. Easy to read and say, but still a big name at eight syllables.
        
        “Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi” is already in English. The full birth name, “Hohepa Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi” is, I think 15 syllables.
        
        A mouthful. Even for Hansen’s critic, Keith Quinn, who we see mostly pushing insurance funeral plans like some fucking TV vulture.

        Since 2011, English language instruction has been compulsory in Japanese schools, beginning at age 10. In major cities and in railway stations many signs are duplicated in English.

        Odakyu-sen has posted before about Maori and Japanese, I recall. From his comments he’s a professional language translator, so I would accept his view.
        
        The Rassie Erasmus you mention was born Johan Rasmus. I’m guessing he’s an Afrikaaner. If so, Afrikaaner names should be a breeze to him. He may well also be familiar also with several of the black indigenous languages of South Africa.

  1. There is good reason to believe the planned sale of the Applicants property by the Respondent is unlawful and which, if effected, cannot be remedied by way of damages. [My comment: the planned sale isn’t unlawful. Auckland Council is following the process set out in the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002]
  2. Alternatively, there is good reason to believe the planned sale is motivated by ill will; where such planned action is additionally without precedent. [My comment: There is a precedent – Charlotte Marsh]
  3. There exists elementary legal questions concerning the actions of the Respondent in selling the Applicant’s property which require a judicial determination, and which actions cannot be undone if the legal questions are determined in favour of the Applicant. [My comment: This assertion is unsubstantiated by the evidence]
  4. A judicial review laying out the legal questions at issue will be filed in support of the interim injunction within 2 working days. [My comment: So Penny is asking the High Court to stop the sale process now on the basis of “legal questions” that will be filed later]
  5. As set out in the accompanying affidavir [sic] of Penelope Mary Bright. [My comment: It looks like Penny is trying yet again to conflate the rates and public records issues. The High Court has made it clear that they’re separate issues]
  
  So, as I see it, the High Court judge has given Penny some time – not long – to explain why her home shouldn’t be sold. Penny will need to explain why her circumstances are different from Charlotte Marsh’s.
  
  Penny is on public record, in court, as accepting that the rates were validly charged. Her defences were rejected. So her only argument now is that Auckland Council can’t lawfully sell her home – despite having an express right to do so under local government legislation.
  
  This will all end in tears for Penny.

In the few seconds I could bear to watch, I saw Dr Philth, with that pooch face, empathising at full volume with some victims.

This is very odd behaviour for Dr Philth, who not that long ago was fulsome in his praise of a far more lethal sniper than the Las Vegas one….

  I *think* someone explained the interim injunction as going through until Monday – three working days? I am sure someone can clarify. I am also aware that Penny, in comments either yesterday or Tuesday, was making quite a big thing of this:
  
  (a) Pending further order of the Court, the respondent shall take no steps, or no further steps, to effect sale of the applicant’s property at 86A School Road, Kingsland.
  
  I’m not sure if she was trying to quietly bypass what was reported by Stuff; namely that the interim injunction was only for three days, after which time presumably it will be all back on …
  
  … or if Stuff has Stuffed up in their reporting.

    As I noted above, Penny represented to the High Court that “[a] judicial review laying out the legal questions at issue will be filed in support of the interim injunction within 2 working days”. 2 working days from Monday (the filing date) is today, but let’s be generous and say Penny has until tomorrow.
    
    The interim injunction applies until a further court order is made, and an order won’t be made until Penny’s “judicial review application” (assuming one is filed) is dealt with. So there’s a bit more water to flow under the bridge.

        What happens if Penny drags her feet? Is Auckland Council supposed to apply for the interim injunction to be lifted? If so, can Auckland Council’s costs be added to the house sale costs?

Bank stocks have been savaged as investors react to concerns about the quality of their lending practises in the wake of the Hayne royal commission.

Investors hit Westpac hardest wiping more than $3.7 billion off the bank’s market value after analysts said loan data published by the royal commission raised doubts about the quality of the bank’s massive mortgage portfolio.

Shares in Westpac, the country’s second largest bank dropped 4.22 per cent by 3.15 pm on Thursday, following a report from UBS analyst Jonathan Mott, who recommended clients “sell” the stock, citing exhibits the bank has been forced to hand over to the royal commission into financial misconduct. … read more via hyperlink above …

        The banks will fight it tooth and nail. Australia Post is considering becoming a bank, a move which could deliver significant competition to the country’s banking oligopoly through lower fees and lower-cost mortgages.
        
        The timing could hardly be better as Australia’s major banks are caught up in the Banking Royal Commission, beset by scandal after scandal and in a weaker position than usual to lobby against prospective rivals.
        
        The rationale for becoming a bank is that Australia Post would exercise its sovereign guarantee and trusted position to access funding cheaply to on-lend to its customers. This lower cost of capital would force the banks to be more competitive in their lending practices and treat their customers better.

        The banking and finance royal commission has cast light on a new type of poverty to emerge in our society: middle class poverty.
        
        To understand it, we have to go back to an earlier government inquiry: the 1972 Commission of Inquiry into Poverty, conducted by Professor Ronald Henderson. That commission had no real policy impact, but its cultural impact was profound. It gave prominence to the Henderson Poverty Index: a measure of consumption described by Henderson as so austere that it was unchallengeable. Updated versions of this index remain a standard benchmark of poverty.
        
        But more than 45 years on, the royal commission into finance is revealing that poverty is no longer just about low income. The commission has heard that Australian banks have adopted actual lending practices (as distinct from their official lending policies) that claim so much household income for contract payments that borrowers are left without enough money to fund basic consumption levels: they are living in poverty. … read more via hyperlink above …

The deaths of men over 65 using electric bikes on Dutch roads have caused the number of cycling fatalities in the country to surpass the people killed in cars.

Official figures from the Netherlands’ central bureau of statistics show a near doubling of deaths on electric bikes in the last 12 months, three-quarters of which involved men of 65 years or over.
