So, this chick Laura Southern and the Molyneux guy.

If I was at NZME or Fairfax or if I was someone who produces Seven Shit or even the wankfest Project I would be contacting Southern & Molyneux’s management and putting in a bid for an exclusive interview if they get to come here and do their show.

Those two = $. Promo the hell out of the IV, do it live, make it a carnival.

Because he has shit for brains, Goff has now turned them into the biggest show in town LOL and with the Free Speech people’s legal action he’s created a monster double LOL.

I would be all over Southern & Molyneux and using my platform whatever it is doesn’t matter to create anticipation, then the event, it’s basically a circus attraction. It’s King Kong.

I know so many people who knew nothing about the touring ‘far right extremists’, now everyone knows. Like, everyone.

This is Goff’s ‘Ngati Whatua Room’. It also shows up beyond any doubt the media’s bias, the media’s hopeless management and the fact they are chicken shit.

  The free speech issue isn’t Goff’s only problem at the moment. The Auckland Ratepayers Alliance has launched a petition against the proposed statue at Bastion Point.
  
  The petition reads:
  
  Just weeks after slamming Aucklanders with a regional fuel tax, Phil Goff is committing $1 million in ratepayer money to a “Statue of Liberty” style monument at Bastion Point, depicting the Mother Earth figure Papatūānuku.
  
  That million dollar bill is just for the design phase – we’re yet to learn what the cost of construction will be.
  
  We believe this is a frivolous use of ratepayer money, and a galling move while the Council claims to be in dire financial straits.
  
  The iwi that originally came up with the idea, Ngāti Whātua Orākei, is more than capable of funding the statue themselves.
  
  Please sign our petition to demonstrate to the Council that ratepayers won’t stand for this monumental waste.

  Quite how Goff can justify this expenditure of ratepayer money at the same time he is taxing Aucklanders for fuel to pay for infrastructure is anybody’s guess.       Went to a function yesterday where Simon spoke. he was asked if the Nats are going to launch a Councillor and Mayoral challenge at the next elections. He said nothing decided but was under active consideration. His tone suggested its all on.
      He asked for a show of hands around satisfaction with the Super City Council and Mayor.

        That was my question and I was ‘naughty’ as I did not wait for the ‘speaking stick (microphone) to be handed to me, but, to be fair, it was one of the shorter less convoluted and least confusing questions asked.
        
        I thought it was a good turnout at some 250 people by my count and Simon Bridges spoke well while not setting one foot off the reservation.

      Rather than a non-functioning statue, why not incorporate the image into something that actually does a job.

      alex (8:53am) – not quite that simple. Even if ngati whatua did pay for it themselves, there is still the fact that this statue would be visible from all over the central city. Hundreds of thousands of people would have to look at it – with no choice. It would be visual pollution of the city/harbour environment on a (literally) monumental scale. A colossal statue of jesus christ, buddha or mohammed would not be acceptable, this statue of another mythical/quasi-religious figure is no different.

  I watched Southern’s Farmlands video on youtube yesterday.
  
  Overall a damn good effort considering she did it on a shoestring budget with very little cooperation from various people she needed to get the job done. A much better job than I would have expected from a professional doco team funded by NZ on air or such.
  
  She made a few mistakes in the Bantu history around the time of the Mfecane etc, but not enough to materially change the doco. She also hashed some pronunciations badly. Those points grated me more than they should have.
  
  Good on her for airing an important topic.

Can anyone tell me which policies that this Government campaigned on, have been implemented as promised and are achieving what they promised and are showing to be a benefit for the country?

Admittedly I’m negative towards them but I’m struggling to think of any.

So far:
• KiwiBuild – There finally seems to be something actually happening but every indication is that they will be woefully short of their target, which is also changing
• Planting Trees – excuse after excuse after excuse. Apart from Jones funding Iwi nurseries
• Billion dollar growth fund – apart from funding some improvements to Jones’ backyard (and some other splashing cash when he gets accused of self-promotion)
• Free education – is anyone extra actually studying? We know tertiary education is down, but we’re told that it’s not just tertiary, which is fair, but where is the evidence that area is growing?
• Paid Parental Leave – implemented but when asked to allow this to be split with Dad, we were told, no, we know best. Mum needs to have time bonding with baby. I guess Jacinda has magic abilities to bond with her baby faster than all other new mums and can be back at work after six weeks.
• Workplace relations – we’ve had more people striking already than we have had in years!
• Pike River – There’s a plan, we’ll get in there. Then we need to come up with a plan and we’ll allocation $23m. The plan is we’re 50% short on budget.
• No new taxes, apart from taxes that are levies, or increases in existing taxes, but not the taxes that we didn’t mean, but we will introduce a tax that first with what we think we want to do.
• Tourism Levy – to be fair, it sounds like this will go ahead, but it was originally campaigned on being $25, but it is now $25-35. Who wants to guess what end of the scale this will come in at?

    The formal quota are processed through special migrant facilities so they are well prepared for life in NZ. I understand the program is residential, several months long and involves outside groups and agency participation.
    
    Oops. It may need 2 years planning to build the extra residential accommodation and ready the external charity aid workers required.

      The official 750 refugees are in a caring situation with various groups involved in their eventual local placement. That extends to accommodation and neighbourly care. The policy has been that those accept will be resettled and not left to fend for themselves.

  When we moved to Auckland from Hurricanes country some 15 years ago, we dropped the Dom Post and subscribed to the Hoorald (plus their Weekend effort) and kept the SST. All were canned within a few years and we don’t miss them at all. Indeed, the day they started to give their papers away in an effort to boost readership numbers, they conceded they’re circling the drain.
  
  IMO, it’s only a matter of time before the owners pull the plug on their paper based effort – and if the Hoorald really thinks they’ll attract subscribers to their online content, then they’ll be prime bidders on the bridge I have for sale.

Another day, another journalist having a go at the Free Speech Coalition, and getting completely slammed in the comments. Rosemary McLeod even manages to slip in a sly dig at “old white men steeped in the privilege of their gender and skin colour”.

Why do I get the uneasy feeling that, despite the apparent freedom to comment on articles like this (at the moment), Ingsoc is alive and well, and thoughtcrimes are just one step away?

        An excellent book by Needham. What stays most vividly in my memory is the Chinese piping natural gas in bamboo pipes to provide night light in a town. This was 1800 or so years ago.
        
        Mind you the Roman Empire was progressive in engineering, too.
        There was a gap of more than a thousand years between Romans building paved roads in Spain and the Spanish (liberated from Islamic overlords) building them. The Romans pioneered concrete, too, with buildings in Rome nearly 2000 years old and far more durable than our concrete works, some of which are already being wrecked by eroding steel reinforcing.

        The rise of Christianity ushered in the dark ages in Europe, creating a near monopoly on literacy, destroying classical knowledge (until it was bought back from middle east and ireland), and consuming more and more of productive surpluses to build churches and cathedrals and support parasitic church heirarchies. Technological and social advances halted for about 1000 years.
        
        Did Buddhism do something similar? I’ve seen the remenants in Tibet – Massive solid gold stuppas in monasteries that probably represented every scrap of wealth that could be extracted from the peasants over hundreds of years, and the appallingly oppressive theocratic rule of the lamas (people skinned alive etc).

Hero’s of Alexandria’s (1st century AD) aeliopile, was probably the first steam powered machine ever, he also had functional pneumatic systems using air heated by fire in a sealed vessel to pump water that opened a door. They had roller-bearings, concrete, sophisticated gear mechanisms (Antikyra mechanism), knew the diameter of the earth within a few percent.

      Wheels aren’t a lot of use in hilly, muddy jungles. You need a flat, dry surface over which the wheel can run. Plus, you need to have stuff (crops, heavy goods, commodities, etc.) to move in the first place. No possessions means no need for wheels.

        Not quite, Roman and Greek arithmetic and math in general was held up or at least made much more difficult by a couple of issues – the lack of a “0” and in the lack of placeholder notation. So in our current system, in the numbers (say) 634 and 925, the 6 and the 9 are both “hundreds”, whereas in a roman number, these are DXXXIV and CMXXV, and the positions in these numbers are meaningless.
        
        One can (and the Romans certainly did) do arithmetical calculations using this system, but it is a lot harder.
        
        And back to the “village” concept above, I suggest it is a pointlkess exercise as in most cases ideas spread and can be “invented” at different times in different places. Paper, the Chinese invented the making of paper, but the Egyptians (Africans by continent but middle-eastern and Mediterranean by cultural group) didn’t need to as they had a near equivalent in papyrus. Sanitation – generally a middle-eastern idea. Northern Europe didn’t typically have public water or sewage until well into the industrial age whereas many middle-eastern areas had (and lost sometimes) these for several thousand years.
        
        There were relatively elaborate African civilizations, but not as much is known about them and their accomplishments. And what establishes civilizations isn’t genetically transmitted, it is cultural.

Had dinner out last night with a couple of friends from the gun club. As is normally the case, the entire conversation centered around Auckland house prices and the damage this Labor government is doing to business.

My mate’s wife made what I thought was an interesting observation…..”the qualities she would like to see in a Prime Minister”. She thought he would be someone with the ideals of President Rodrigo Duterte, the steely cunning and sense of humor displayed by Vlad Putin, the charm and boyish good looks of Justin Trudeau….and be married to someone with a similar background and style to that of Melania.

She then went on to suggest that maybe I should consider standing as an Independent for Epsom in 2020…….

Just noticed on another web site . Photos of three anti free speech bullies. Seems they dont want NZs to hear two Canadians coming to NZ and speak about how free speech around the world is being shut down.

“Transformational” another word done to death by the Looney left who run local & central government in NZ.

For the past couple of months it has been the clowns that comprise the cabinet.

Now it is the mayor of Dunedin. This in relation to $800k from Indiana Jones slush fund for a feasibility study into the redevelopment of the Dunedin waterfront (all built on reclaimed land).

The study to look into building:
A new sea wall;
A 800 bed hotel 5 star hotel; and
A convention centre.

Without receiving $800k, I could write the report now and come with the usual conclusions of either “Yes” to all or the PwC view of no firm conclusions until I do yet another study.

However, how about we stop this circus & get real – and here I give my apologies to the people of Dunedin & Otago –

Greater Dunedin has a population of circa 100k & NZ has 4.5m people. But when are people going to stop & realise not every centre requires large/empty hotels & under used convention centres/town halls. Because NZ is a country that is, but a pimple on the arse of the world – we are not on the world conference/convention circuit and we are not on the world exhibition circuit. So why do we have politicians, civic leaders and idiot business people who are prepared to waste/squander this country’s scarce economic resources on such vanity projects, that will remain economic black holes e.g. the Cloud, the ANZ Convention Centre in the Wynyard Quarter, proposed Auckland Stadium etc. Not one of these projects are “Transformational”, whatever that means.

Goff’s failure to address council spending is being paid by everybody because the fuel companies are putting up fuel around the country to help reduce the impact on Auckland. All Goff needs to do is reduce spending by 4% and the fuel tax would not be needed.

Well I think houseprices are on the move again.

My ANZ banking app has their estimated valuation for my house as mortgage security. After being stagnant for months, it hopped up 20k two weeks ago….. then another 23k this week. Obviously I haven’t done any major renovations in the past month to affect the value, seems more likely that the market is finally realising that Kiwibuild won’t provide the millions of cheap houses that were promised.

For example, having union representatives being able to enter my premises and stop my staff from doing the job I pay them for without even having the courtesy to notify me runs “counter to the kind and tolerant values of the vast majority of New Zealanders” who own and manage small businesses.

Labour has tried its damnedest to keep Southern and Molyneux out of New Zealand, even using its proxy Phil Goff. That they have failed is good news, and should be welcomed by “the vast majority of New Zealanders”, to quote Iain Lees-Galloway.

    Stephie – I support free speech. I respect the way DPF runs his blog, and I also respect his right to intervene when people cross boundaries. On some occasions, I have even agreed with things that you have said.
    
    I agree that we would be all the poorer without freedom of speech. That’s why I am pleased that Iain Lees-Galloway (not the spelling; it’s not Lee Gollawy) has accepted that he did not have any justification for refusing visas to Ms Southern and Mr Molyneux.
    
    That does not mean that I endorse their views. Before this story broke I had never heard of either, but over the weekend I will be watching the Farmlands documentary. I welcome the legal action against Phil Goff and others; it will be interesting to see if Goff acted unlawfully. In the meantime, I suggest that our Canadian visitors will now be looking at a larger venue than the Bruce Mason Centre, and they will thank Mr Goff and Mr Lees-Galloway for the free advertising they have unwittingly provided.

      K.S. I am of the same opinion. I may not agree with the views of Southern and Molyneux but that is no excuse to limit their freedom to express those views.
      I have watched Southern’s You Tube clips and found them to be controversial but not really outrageous as some media commentators have complained. For instance one clip recorded in Australia had Southern on the street asking people whether they would kill her for her views. Surprisingly most who were approached didn’t recognise her and said they would’nt kill her anyway. Thats not to say that you would get an almost opposite reaction in say Saudi or Iran.
      Molyneux is a classic chauvinist who does use inflammatory language and would be the speaker who would more than likely incite a reaction from protestors.
      Personally I won’t be going to see either of them, I know where they are coming from and respect their opinions.

The Infometrics analysis released last night is far from a glowing endorsement of this Government’s economic management and shows that it must act to improve declining economic forecasts and plummeting business confidence, National’s Finance spokesperson Amy Adams says.

“Infometrics is now predicting GDP growth of only 2 per cent per year between now and 2021, well below the 3 per cent forecast by Treasury in Budget 2018. Lower GDP growth means fewer opportunities, lower wage growth and a lower standard of living for New Zealanders.

“This pessimistic forecast from Infometrics follows the recent below forecast GDP numbers as well as downgrades in expectations from most of the major bank economists.

“The worryingly low levels of business confidence and own activity highlighted by Infometrics show that the global economy is currently the only thing propping up growth, with both plummeting under this Government.

“There is simply nothing this Government has done that is pro-growth or good for business investment. Its low-growth policies hamper the economy’s ability to create opportunities, grow jobs and lift wages which will have a big effect on whether a business invests in that new piece of machinery or hires that extra staff member.

“The Government inherited a buoyant economy and seem to just expect that growth is inevitable and will continue to increase no matter what policies they implement. This is not the case.

        I agree that the murder and maiming of peaceful protestors is no joke and the IDF have probably not done everything in their power to prevent civilians getting killed. The problem is when a group of insurgents, or freedom fighters or guerilla fighters use civilians as a shield against regular troops, who they know, in most cases will not engage for fear of killing civilians. Angola, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, there are countless examples. And often the civilians do not have much choice in this. In the Gaza – Israel conflict, there are atrocities committed by both sides, it’s a lose-lose situation and mostly women and children will suffer on both sides. But then show me any conflict in humanities history where atrocities have not occurred, and where the suffering of the innocents has not occurred.

Courier parcel picked up yesterday morning is still sitting in their accepting depot a few km away from where it was picked up.

    I don’t believe in being rigid about these things.

      I agree with that assessment. People are generally more aware now than before about the benefits of healthy eating habits. I would say, though, that there’s a lot of contradictory advice out there, some of it self-serving by vested interests, and others reflecting the latest trendy fad (eg butter is good > butter is good but margarine is better > butter is bad and margarine is good).
      
      From my perspective, the important thing is a balanced diet that includes, meat, seafood, fruit and vegetables.
      
      And, as a final point, many people seem to have forgotten about the pleasure of eating a home-cooked meal. One of my good friends once blew me away when he told me that he’d never turned on (let alone used) the oven in the place he was renting.

        Must be so bad for their health.
        As I’ve gotten older I just can’t eat takeaways anymore, except for the better ones like Wendy’s and Burgerfuel.
        But it costs a fortune to eat out.
        Tonight I cooked fish, potatoes, cauliflower for 4 of us and it would have cost about $10 all up.
        Sometimes I add a yummy grated carrot that costs about 20 cents extra. 🙂

    The NSW backbencher has been accused of making staff walk her dog and clean up its faeces under working conditions one staffer described as “hell”, Buzzfeed News reported.

I am really sick of all these scientists telling us what we should eat and not eat, to live long and healthy, and lose weight and not get cancer.
Red wine, no wine, sugar no sugar, fat, no fat, carbs no carbs.
Paleo diet, Mediterranean diet, this diet, that diet.

I mean the other day some scientist said they are 100% sure that fat is what causes weight gain, not sugar or carbs.
They fed fat to 1,000 mice.

So all this talk about sugar in our soft drinks is rubbish.

  There was never any good science pointing to fat. The evidence that excess carbohydrate is the problem is not just from studies, but can be witnessed first hand around you.
  
  You simply will not find a fatty who does not eat lots of carbs, unless they changed their diet very recently.
  
  Everyone who drops carbs loses huge amounts of weight with ease, and feels better immediately.
