I wonder how long the Americans (and key allies) are going to sit on their hands and watch the Chicoms’ military get bigger… and bigger… and more advanced… and more audacious.

If it happens, I suspect it will happen without notice, and it will get out of control extremely quickly.

I don’t know if China will experience disaster from internally created problems, or from external forces like a hot war or this trade war, but I have a strong feeling millions of Chinese lives are needlessly going to be put at risk.

  China is sitting on a demographic timebomb thanks to the legacy of the one-child policy. Their economy is also overheated from decades of flat out growth.
  Add to that their huge military, economic, and political power, and you have a recipe for global disaster.
  
  Let’s hope that, whatever happens, the west can stick together to ride out the storm.

    Right Southern Raider they are even starting closer to home than the South Pacific as they now have some Philippines feeling like being part of China from the amount of cash flowing from there. The current President has made it a cheap buy after driving the Peso down in a somewhat single (heavy) handed manner. Such a shame after his predecessor made so much progress with International trade and relations largely unseen by the masses. NZ even helped with financial support for the dairy industry to lift it’s whole milk production from 20% so desperately needed for the ever increasing number of babies.
    It is more likely to be victory by stealth than anything more confrontational like buying the Pacific and many other gems along their steel silk road. So much of the spread of their tentacles go invisible as behind any issues the MSM latch on to for click bait with the trade wrangles being pushed as a catalyst to more direct confrontation providing a great distraction.

  Way too late duggle – the horse bolted long ago. Unless the USA wants to risk Armageddon start learning Mandarin. China is doing just fine with its current expansion tactics and the last thing they want is war with the US or the West. Africa, the Americas, Europe, Asia and Oceania are all increasingly being indebted to China, their infrastructures financed by China and their populations peopled by Chinese immigration. NZ is but a small piece of the jigsaw.

    In a NZ context, we are in the process of changing from being the UK’s dairy farm to being China’s. Same industry, different owners, ALTHOUGH start to expect the importation of large numbers of laboureres from the mainland to staff the farms; the locals (Kiwi’s) will have no chance.
    
    China has form in such matters, and are well practiced in its application. Zim comes imediately to mind…

      I agree with you but I’m not so sure about the mass importation of Chinese farm workers. I rather think that the major expansion in dairying will be on the Chinese mainland rather than NZ. Geopolitically and strategically NZ is important for the Chinese. Gateway to Antarctica and its minerals and fishing, air transport hub for access to South America (there are six Chinese airlines already flying into Auckland), port facilities, comms hub and importantly as a loaded pistol pointed straight at Fortress Australia.

        Gazza, China already produces twice as much milk as New Zealand.
        
        When the Industrial Revolution began in Britain, it was paralleled by an Agricultural Revolution, fuelled in part by tiny holdings and public holdings (commons and so on) being merged into economic-size farms.
        
        The same has begun to happen in China, with villagers moving to the big cities to work in industrial plants. Chinese agricultural production will increase sharply from the bigger economic farms that result from this.
        
        China, by area, is the fourth biggest country in the world, and about 55 per cent is agricultural. (About 42 per cent of NZ’s land is agricultural).

    True Gazza W it really is essential to see beyond the sensational headlines as some journalists are little less than atavists using a keyboard/microphone rather than marching with a placard. As we also have in NZ with the attempted distraction of a “leak” provided to a had picked promoter.
    You too have been following the money as well as the magnetic attraction for China when a weak administration leaves a country in desperate need of a financial buoy to stay afloat. Also note the mention of what might their key target to garner a favored response to the offer to “help”. Infrastructure. Or more particularly major deficiencies where progressively over 3 or more decades it has been neglected by local authorities more attracted to vanity monuments to accede to some individuals ego. The sliding NZ$ will have drawn early attention after they saw even with their trusty abacus by the bead-less row of the bottom line the country was rowed into a hole. Yet another possible rowing gold for NZ as the result of the Fool Factor (unintended consequences) taking their toll. As their proverb says “a moth throws itself into the flame” they will keep a candle lit for them.

  Well, of course they would be (amongst other things), wouldn’t they? They probably train for strikes against India and Russia as well, I would imagine.
  The Russians probably have various game plans for strikes on Europe, China, and the USA, I’d guess.
  Now maybe, just maybe, the US doesn’t have a similar level of preparedness for strikes against China and Russia (and who knows who else), but I’d be surprised.

  China doesn’t have a military, China’s ruling party the CCP has a privately operated military but that doesn’t belong to the Chinese state and is not answreable to civilian oversight.
  
  It exists largely to ensure the party it is part of retains power. Secondly it claims it would like to retake Taiwan, in reality I think the secondary goal is to be able to disrupt regional trade amongst the first island chain as a detterant.
  
  Militarially speaking they have no real offensive war potential because they have a net materials deficit in key areas like oil and iron, import most of their technology and are highly dependent on foreign trade and also interdependence.
  
  Therefore they would need the support of at least Russia in any conflict, similarly they would rely on nuetrality of s.korea at a minimum to supply materials, technology and parts for their war economy.

  The Philippines sought help at international law, something New Zealand likes to prattle on about as the panacea for all disputes. The UN Court of Permanent Arbitration in the Hague ruled in favour of the Philippines in 2016 and rejected China’s historic claim to much of the South China Sea. The Chinese laughed at the |Court’s ruling and have continued constructing military facilities in the region. So much for the UN when one of its permanent members gives a legal ruling the fingers. There is a strong lobby in Wellington that pushes China’s barrow, and of course we have a man sitting in Parliament whose links to the Chinese intelligence services have caused concern. New Zealand’s approach to the South China Sea issue is essentially all piss and wind like the barber’s cat.

Only in New Zealand could this stupidity flourish. The government owns cars and employs drivers. Then when they are used, we say ‘shit why didn’t you use something cheaper?’ Once the cars are purchased and the drivers employed, it is sensible to use them instead of buying other surface transport services. That is because most of the costs are fixed.

If in the future Simon Bridges rents a Toyota corolla from Avis, instead of using the BMWs, the billed cost of HIS transport will be lower, but the cost of ALL transport services to the taxpayer will be higher.

  I have yet to see an explanation of how the use of a Crown vehicle cost what it did, and in any event, I can’t see why there is such a fuss about such a piddling sum of money. What was he supposed to do? A camper van and a bit of free camping? He’s the leader of the opposition. He toured the country. It cost the average kiwi about 25 cents. SFW?

    The cars are owned by the Crown
    The drivers are employed by the Crown.
    Certain folks in the political arena are allocated use according to their official Parliamentary duties.
    Ergo, the “cost” is simply a transfer of from one internal (Govt) account to another.
    that is not “spending.”
    If Bridges had not done what every Leader of the Oppn has done, he would be damned by the media. Same with Ardern, Little, Cunliffe, English, Key et al.

  Good idea to raise GST alongside compensating tax reductions. We have a massive black economy, last I read over $20bill a year, conservatively. Look at the poor plumber in the news today, can’t even make minimum wage.

    A lot of cash jobs were historically when tradies were doing weekend jobs for mates so they avoided second job tax rates and did a favour for friends
    
    However now you have a very large portion of society (especially Auckland) of people who come from cultures of actively avoiding tax and because they deal amongst themselves it would be very hard to catch

        Funny igm the biggest operators of wholesale like grocery outlets here are Chinese and all are strictly cash. They work of a very skinny margin but compensate with the biggest lines of customers at the checkout which is more intended to keep abreast of demands and restocking. Unlike the local versions of supermarkets who have card charging with what seems to be the most laborious process for such transactions ever seen. What with constant malfunctions, lost network lines they are only saved by so many missing items “out of stock” absent from the trolleys. One stocks NZ Mainland cheese but a walk to the chiller at the back of the store is more often a little more exercise as the shelf is bare. It seems that progress come at the cost of loosing a primary skill of the successful shopkeeper.

    I wouldn’t be surprised if this bunch of incompetents also started a group of gst exempt categories. Eg feminine products, pharmaceuticals, fresh food etc. All this will do is add massive extra costs, and will cancel out any benefits from increasing the actual rate.   It went to 15% under the National regime, BUT, was balanced with tax adjustments elsewhere making the increase somewhat fiscally neutral.
  
  When the collection of fuckwits pull this stunt, there will be no balance and the tax take will increase with the ‘poor’ paying more unless there is a massive transfer via something like wff.
  
  As much as gst is disliked, I actually favour this form of indirect tax on consumption rather than effort as with paye or being self employed. It gives the consumer the choice to purchase or not (although I have difficulty with gst on rates and how it works with petrol) and catches all the purchases made by the feral scum in our society who will do anything but work and think dealing P is a career option

      Hardly Paulus it is much more deep seated and came as part of the original package made more of a challenge by the aging process where memory can make the distinction more of a challenge. Some who have it set on earlier have even been known to hear voices. Like a claim of “hearing” somebody say “silly little girl” for example.

I usually put NZ’er but as it was medical I considered my long, long ago arrival via 6 generations from Britain and rejected British and rejected European, gave Pakeha (the racist term) a swerve and went for White.         Serious question; Why should non-Maori be labeled by a Maori descriptor? While Maori are self titled, a vast majority of New Zealanders are European in ancestry so why shouldn’t the correct racial descriptor be as such.
        Personally I don’t really give a rats but if I was asked I am “a New Zealander” first and “European New Zealander” if pushed to assign to a racial demographic.

It was good to get a response from the Chancellor in regards to my complaint about the Massey Uni VC. I still do not believe the explanation that has been given, nor do I think the proposal to have a series of discussions is a satisfactory response.

“Thank you for your email in regards to the University’s decision to cancel a venue booking for the Massey Manawatū Politics Society event with Dr Don Brash due to be held last week at Massey University in Manawatū.

Before the planned event, society members became concerned about a potential security risk because of indications on social media of demonstration. They approached the University. Massey staff, including Vice-Chancellor Professor Thomas, looked at publicly available social media posts and became concerned.

Professor Thomas was faced with a difficult situation and chose to make a decision in the interests of the safety of staff, students and our campus community. As a Council, we fully support Professor Thomas’ decision to take a cautious approach to matters of safety and security based on the information available to her at the time.

She has reiterated her commitment – and Massey University’s – to free speech and has proposed to staff that the University engage in a series of discussions around that issue on our campuses.”

There is a big furore over the casting of straight actors for gay roles in movies.

The LBGTQ Activist base is now calling for all gay roles to be played by gay actors because only they have lived the experience. Of course they can still play straight roles because they have had to live in a straight world.

I have little time for those who call to replace one prejudice with another. It is called acting because you are pretending to be another person.

A gay person has every right to say that a straight actor is not convincing playing a gay love scene, but since when has Hollywood ever played a realistic love scene for anyone? Movies are stylized and we critique performances as a result.

Tom Hanks is not as dumb as Forrest Gump. Sir Anthony Hopkins has never killed or eaten anyone. Sitr Ian McKellen is no Wizard. Daniel Craig is no secret agent.

Although R.Lee Ermey was a Marine Corp Drill Sergeant.

I don’t think the activists have thought this through. The counterpoint for only gay actors playing gay is that only straight actors can play straight.

Sexuality should not be a barrier to any role, so why are activists calling for exactly that?

The Simon Bridges’ limo expenses debate is being blown out of all proportion. The VIP service has a number of fixed costs. It employs drivers and provides them with intensive driver training. The cars are all purchased, albeit at a cheap price by BMW at the moment (advertising for the brand). The cars are already insured, registered and housed in bases which include garaging. A lot of fixed costs are kept down, eg, drivers clean their cars when they can. All of these fixed costs will have to be paid for whether they are used or not. Really the only extra costs while they are on the road is diesel, driver accommodation, and depreciation, (which is less than it otherwise would be due to the deal done with BMW). Conjuring up a figure of a $113,000 travel bill is artificial. The real extra cost to the tax payer over “normal” use is far far lower than this number. The argument that taxis would be cheaper is wrong. They would only be if we dumped the VIP cars altogether. I would hate to see that. If we are a first world developed country hosting foreign dignitaries, the supply of this sort of service should be unquestioned.

  Yes I commented the same earlier in the thread. Tracy Watkins in today’s Herald is suggesting that Simon will learn a lesson. Be more frugal with the BMWs. And presumably use taxis and rental cars instead. Which would increase total transport costs. Once the BMWs are purchased they should be used for all Ministerial surface transport. Because most of the costs are fixed. Simon’s bill was high because those fixed costs were apportioned to him.

  Right gorse it is the total irony in this hit job that is so hilarious for the majority. After trowing almost the surplus away to actually do something in the first 100 days the COL is now pleading polity and a shortage of funds. Essential in the wage demands as we noted with the nurses with so many repeating there is no more to be had. Now it is the teachers turn with those being followed by the other group having to deal with the sorry results of baby making being such a flourishing industry getting ready for more strikes. All made even more challenging as they have they have no idea of how much they don’t to slash around. They cast the die with outrages promises and hammering a bigger share in property manta never anticipating having to make good on those promises. Unfortunately by their own bungling the nurses deal set the bar higher than they fought to hold down so now the flood gates have opened completely. The other bad signal has been a rush of decisions made for the wrong reasons after pressure was applied by some minority added by the Media party and the SJW. We are currently waiting for the next big Captains call ahead of her visit to the UN to be broadcast if the baby fails to have them swooning. That primary ploy is barely an odds on favorite in a location where there might be a large female contingent but are unlikely the baby making kind or have even found a suitable letter to identify by. That little fiasco’s costs will make the bloated figure for Simon Bridges expenses look like just chump change as we are being preconditioned for this as they try appear frugal with their own expenses.
  Meanwhile there is now a new Infrastructure Minister who loves to claim personal success in his actions with the constant use and emphasis on “what I am, will or intented doing” rounded by telling those listening they can quote HIM on this. The irony is again heavier than some of the material needed to fill the infrastructure deficiency as the setting up will be a mere $5 million “sometime soon from somewhere yet to be decided.” It is so easy to understand the confusion when so many horses are trying to push their carts up hill as the passenger does what the horses do in clement weather. Yet another case of a false complaint. I hope the name suppression will cease after sentencing. It is unfortunate that in a lot of cases of rape there is no evidence besides the woman’s word. That should not be enough evidence to put a man in jail for years. That is unless he has Labour Party connections.

The son said he would take the duck back if they fucked again. She agreed. After they fucked the second time, the son left. He was walking home, thinking about what to do with the duck when it broke the leash. The duck ran out into the street and was hit by a car. Tracey Watkins swallowed a dead rat when she conceded that Bridges’ recent tour was not the extravagant perk that others made it out to be. Unfortunately, the choke became too much for her and, having expelled the rat, she reverted to form and got into Bridges for both the enquiry and the cost. Her argument might have had more credibility if she had explained what alternative form of transport would have catered for the timetable and workload that she detailed.
Bridges may end up with egg on his face over the enquiry but I doubt it. If there is a festering sore in the National party then better that it is exposed now than in 18 months. Anyway, why would a disgruntled Nat be so stupid as to take a risk in releasing figures that were only days off release anyway? If there is such a stupid Nat, then the party needs to get rid of him/her asap..

        I have a 7th edition of H.W. Williams: A Dictionary of the Maori Language.
        
        There have been numerous corrections over the editions… so I’d try and purchase the latest Edition.
        
        Trouble is it is Maori – English only.
        
        I also have a pocket edition of H.M. Ngata 1993: English-Maori dictionary….
        This does seem to contain some of the words missing from your Biggs.
        
        For an online Maori Dictionary.. Try:

  Very sad news indeed. When I was a teenager I used to devour Metro magazine. I think I learned more about good English writing from his magazine than any English textbook. I still have a few old copies from Metro’s golden age (1987 through to 1995) and when I read them now I still get depressed about what passes for investigative journalism in our media today.

A new study published in PLOS One:

In on-line forums, parents have been reporting that their children are experiencing what is described here as “rapid-onset gender dysphoria,” appearing for the first time during puberty or even after its completion. The onset of gender dysphoria seemed to occur in the context of belonging to a peer group where one, multiple, or even all of the friends have become gender dysphoric and transgender-identified during the same timeframe. Parents also report that their children exhibited an increase in social media/internet use prior to disclosure of a transgender identity.

∘ A 12-year-old natal female was bullied specifically for going through early puberty and the responding parent wrote “as a result she said she felt fat and hated her breasts.” She learned online that hating your breasts is a sign of being transgender. She edited her diary (by crossing out existing text and writing in new text) to make it appear that she has always felt that she is transgender.

∘ A 21-year-old natal male who had been academically successful at a prestigious university seemed depressed for about six months. Since concluding that he was transgender, he went on to have a marked decline in his social functioning and has become increasingly angry and hostile to his family. He refuses to move out or look for a job. His entire family, including several members who are very supportive of the transgender community, believe that he is “suffering from a mental disorder which has nothing to do with gender.”

The three natal female friends all announced they were trans boys and chose similar masculine names. After spending time with these three friends, the 14-year-old natal female announced that she was also a trans boy.

… Attendees probably left last night with more questions than when they arrived as Ministers, who in Opposition had seemed sympathetic to environmental issues were left qualifying and modifying their stance on major issues.

This was starkly evident in an exchange between Urban Development Minister, Phil Twyford, and the EDS CEO, Gary Taylor over urban sprawl.

Twyford had set out an impassioned description of the impact of high house prices in Auckland and advocated the linking together of transport and other infrastructure and new housing developments.

But he also advocated the scrapping or urban-rural limits.

“We believe that we have to manage growth on the fringes of the city,” he said.

“If we do not allow new land to come into the supply we will never ever fix the problem of absurdly expensive urban land.

“With good investment in infrastructure and transport, with more planning, not less to create the future urban environment that we want, setting aside areas of special value and open spaces, acquiring land for transport and other infrastructure, if we then allow the city to grow we will bring down urban land prices and it is absolutely critical that we do,” he said.

Twyford had proposed this when he was in Opposition but, even so, any suggestion that more rural land was going to be absorbed for housing was going to be controversial at an environmental conference.

And Taylor was quick to respond.

“Everything makes sense except I worry about why you need to do away with rural-urban boundaries altogether,” said Taylor.

He said that giving free reign to developers seemed inconsistent with Twyford’s overall objective of having a compact city.

Twyford replied that it was a question of values.

“This is for us, for Labour, for our coalition government, this is fundamentally a social justice issue.

“Our objective is not to build a Copenhagen of the South Pacific.

“We could build a beautiful city with a whole lot of the policies we have talked about.

“We could build a Vancouver of the South Pacific; beautiful but utterly unaffordable.

“I’m interested in us fixing this totally dysfunctional urban land economy.

“If we don’t deal with affordability we will have completely wasted the opportunity that has been given to our generation.”

Twyford said the only way to deal with the affordability issue was to deal with the land price issue and that meant dealing with the artificial scarcity of land caused by the planning system and the availability of finance for infrastructure.

However he didn’t dispute that the Auckland region was going to become more heavily built up.

“You know what,” he said. “In two or three generations this is going to become a tri-city conurbation between Hamilton, Tauranga and Auckland whether we like it or not.” … read more via hyperlink above …

The contrast is striking. In central Christchurch, Fletcher Living is taking forever to get going on its East Frame townhouse and apartment block development.

Government and council have agreed that denser inner city housing is vital to making a success of the earthquake rebuild. Yet despite inking a deal with Fletcher to build nearly 1000 homes back in 2015, the first 20 properties won’t be finished until late this year.

The buyers just don’t seem to be there for them. And so the East Frame development has been uphill all the way.

However, take the road half an hour out of town to Lincoln and the story is the opposite. This once sleepy village has exploded with subdivisions. Its residential footprint is now 10 times what it was 20 years ago.

This morning I heard Nigel Farage interviewed on RNZ.
Most of the eighteen minutes was taken up, as you’d expect, with Brexit and was fairly predictable.
I was interested to hear him say he believed in populism, which suits his style of appealing to the masses, of course.
Basically he believes the direction of the country should be determined by voters who are as ill informed as possible.

And he isn’t talking about trans-genderism.

In the first few paragraphs Matthews mentions Clarke Gayford twice, and a takes a swipe at “dinosaur-like, old white male chauvinism.”

Matthews is reporting on what will be the first of a series of meetings for men, called “Hard-ly Speaking”.

The first meeting entails six men talking about their lives over whisky, wine, and food. One of them will be Labour MP Duncan Webb. Others are: a Maori health worker, a young Polynesian, a Christchurch liquor retailer, the principal of Christ’s College, and the owner of a PR company.

In his sizeable plug for the talk series in the space-strapped newspaper, Matthews includes this:

University of Canterbury senior chaplain Spanky Moore says he finds it hard to work out what it means to be a man these days.

“I totally get that the male voice has often been a privileged one, but regardless of that, most men I know struggle to be honest about their fears and failures, and vulnerable with each other about how they feel,” Moore says. “I think challenging our men to go deeper than sports and DIY can only be a good thing for Christchurch.”

A worldwide coalition of Jewish groups has issued a joint statement condemning attempts to stifle criticism of Israel with false accusations of antisemitism.

The statement, which 40 Jewish groups from 15 different countries have signed, could not have been more timely. In the UK, the Labour Party is currently under pressure to adopt the full guidelines accompanying a definition of antisemitism from the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA).

Labour adopted the 38-word definition long ago.

Why Jews Need To Stop Using the Word ‘Christian’ as a Slur

There is a widespread but little-mentioned problem in Judaism today: namely, the derisive dismissal of Reform Jews by the Orthodox and ultra-Orthodox. This often takes the form of slurs and insults. One of the most noxious and oft-repeated of these is the assertion that Reform Jews are not really Jews, but Christians.

As a Reform rabbi with a master’s degree in Christianity, I could argue for hours about why this is wrong, with basic, objective facts. Reform Jews do not, for example, subscribe to the basic tenets of Christianity: that Jesus was the incarnate son of God, come to save sinners from their innate sinfulness, resurrected after his death on the cross. We do not believe that Mary was a virgin, or that she gave birth to the Messiah in the form of Jesus Christ. In short, we do not subscribe to any of the basic tenets of Christian theology. Especially in Israel, where this insult is most prevalent, such facts don’t seem to stem the abuse.

The joke, if that’s what it is, goes like this: “You’ll have to forgive us Jews for being a little nervous. Two thousand years of Christian love have worn down our nerves.”

That says it all, doesn’t it? The scars of antisemitism and missionary activity, the pathos-drenched sense of humor, the contempt for Christianity — this is certainly how I regarded our local majority religion as I was growing up. When I was a child, Christianity was like the big, stupid bully: at once idiotic, and overwhelmingly powerful. Couldn’t they see how ridiculous their religion was? A virgin birth? Santa Claus? An Easter Bunny? A messiah who got killed, but actually died for our sins? And yet, these were the people running our country, telling us which days we get off from school and which we don’t, and playing their insidious music every winter.

Surely, some of the Jesus fad is due to the success of David Klinghoffer’s 2005 book, “Why the Jews Rejected Jesus.” (Answer: We’re the chosen people — a nation, not universalists.) But I think a lot of it is also due to our increased confidence as an assimilated minority in the United States. Where once we could have been tortured or burned for not accepting Christ, now we can publish books criticizing him.

      The “Christians without a Name” – the Cooneyites – are in NZ. I think people who think they have died out here, and survive chiefly in Australia and Ireland, are premature about the sect’s demise.
      
      Members meet in each other’s homes, and like other sects, can put pressure on families when not all members want to be in the sect.

  Globalisation has somewhat de-industrialised the United States. We have had military leaders suggesting that it doesn’t have enough heavy industry left to fight a war of any length.
  
  Heaps of American designed, American branded electronics are manufactured in Taiwan and China.
  
  It will be interesting to see if Trump can resurrect electronics as he is doing with coal and steel.
  
  A lot of America’s exports to China are agricultural, and if America has to rely on this it will go the same way as New Zealand – being an economic colony of China.
