    But it appears leader Simon Bridges hasn’t read the Bill, questioning on Monday morning whether a $3 fine for stealing a chocolate bar would be enough.
    
    “The one thing I struggle with, as I understand it the way it works is it’s one-and-a-half times immediate fine, what you nick, right? I’m just trying to work out whether that’s enough, how that sort of fits,” Mr Bridges told The AM Show.
    
    “If you steal a $2 chocolate bar or something, what’s that? That’s $2.50 actually only, or $3 – You’ve got to say, is that enough? We’ll have a good look at it.”
    
    Darroch Ball’s Shoplifting (Offence and Penalties) Bill actually specifies the minimum fine would be $150. If the value of the goods stolen is less than $100, the fine would be $150. If it’s higher, then it would one-and-a-half times the total value.
    
    He mangled his shopfront appearance in the media this morning. Simon Bridges couldn’t hit the side of a barn.

Jarrod writes:

They will be a chamber of propaganda run by the tastes of whoever is in charge. That idea used to be an anathema to liberal thinking, yet for many – including many who should know better – it is becoming a comfortable default. We know what’s best for everyone is as pompous as it is dangerous.

The highlighing is mine. Surely, Massey University can no longer be seen as a real University? Hell, even when I was at High School we were exploring controversial topics. Is Massey “University” so unsure of their academic rigour that they feel their students and staff are not even at secondary school level in their ability to confront, debate, and discuss controversial topics?

Jarrod points out that the next test for Massey is just around the corner, as Don Brash is scheduled to speak again at Massey on October 17. And he summarises:

If she again gets it wrong, watch the high quality academics at that institution begin to jump ship and student numbers drop. Nobody wants to be branded as a joke.

  I call on my Māori academic colleagues to speak out. To assure people that kaupapa principles and Māori partnerships with education institutions don’t mean that free speech is stifled, that race relations issues can’t be debated, or that we can only hear from people who hold certain views.

Winston finally realised that his erratic behaviour was being caused by an endless stream of migraine headaches.
He went to his doctor for a physical, resulting in the diagnosis, that the only solution, was to have his testicles surgically removed. Although this was extreme to say the least, and after some soul searching, he could no longer stand the pain.
Upon returning home after the surgery, he spent the next several weeks recovering in his bath robe.
The headaches went away and he felt better then he had felt in years. He thought, this new wonderful feeling needed to be celebrated with a new custom made suit and all the accessories, so he asked his staff to find the finest tailor in Wellington.
The next day the tailor arrived, and measured Winston for his new clothes. The tailor asked what size briefs do you wear,
Winston responded, size 28, the same size I have worn since I was sixteen.
The tailor was stunned, but you have gained over a hundred kilos since then, and size 28 briefs will squeeze your testicles so hard, and give you the worst headaches imaginable.
For once in his life, Winston was speechless.

About that capital gains tax – interesting to see indications of a change in thinking over the last few years.

28% in favour of a CGT in the Stuff poll at the first link below. Very simplistic Y/N question though.

However, back in 2014 41% in favour, 46% in Auckland. See the second link below.

Labour CGT policy dumped after the 2014 election as electoral poison. Until Ms Ardern resuscitated it in a 2017 Captain’s Call, only to retreat real fast and leave the flak to Michael Cullen.

The interim TWG reports that it is the wealthy who have greater income from capital gains. One aspect not mentioned as far as I can tell is age. Generally older people have more net assets than younger people. That is because they have paid down debt, saved up, taken more risk and because of the passage of time / inflation. Younger people have student loans and mortgages.

And younger voters are less likely to vote.

  Yes their (lefty economic advisors) thought processes are all out they think people increasing their wealth should be taxed by the state and then redistributed and somehow this will create great businesses. No this will create more of the same. Whereas Singapore, Hong Kong, Lichtenstein etc invited in wealthy people in with low/no taxes, the wealth growth spilled over to wage growth. NZ is never going to solely grow incomes to get ourselves out of our problems.

      I believe English and Russian the the accepted languages for a Mathematics thesis.
      
      I also believe some tossser tried to get it accepted in Maori but failed. The idea was to force the department to get it translated back into English so a maori translator gained a 50K fee.

I understand that our Cinderella is scheduled to give her great peroration to the UN General Assembly in New York late on Thursday.
One interesting point is that by that time most of the 168 Delegates will have left, as is the usual timing.
Once Trump and a few others have spoken that’s it.
So she will be preaching to the NZ media who will all be there with a copy of her speech.
So we will hear of her glory in all things – most of the media have already written about how wonderful she is, and a mother too, being so brave to take her along.
This week is all about window dressing but two of Cinderellas favourites Trudeau and Macron have dreadfully dropping polls.
Never mind she will be back to a Labour led SNAFU before jetting off to APEC shortly.

I note that the High Court has supported Judge Soana Moala when she reduced the jail term of Rachael Heta by 30% on charges of assault and causing grievous bodily harm because of her ‘Maori cultural background’. The judge in sentencing noted ‘the disproportionate number of Maori imprisoned and said the effects of colonisation were well- documented’.

Does this mean that a similar judicial approach would be taken were someone like Paula Bennett to be charged with common assault or causing grievous bodily harm? Or Simon Bridges or David Seymour. Presumably Judge Moala would see all three as products of the same ‘Maori cultural background’. Or is Judge Moala simply an activist, a politicised judge bringing her own personal world view to her sentencing- and having these views affirmed by the High Court? Isn’t the law in New Zealand meant to be blind, applying the same standards of justice to all defendants, irrespective of their race, gender and social class? Seems not.

  What they seem to not understand is that it is destructive to give people time off for a shitty childhood or whatever.
  
  Punishment needs to be enough to send a message that the criminal has been bad, society does not like what they have done, and here are some consequences. It must be uncomfortable.
  
  If a person has had a shitty childhood then their discomfort threshold is much higher. They need a harsher sentence, not a lighter sentence.
  
  Prison is not only a deterrent. It also serves as a controlled environment where the person can get some correction. Clearly a person with a shitty childhood needs a longer period of correction to fix what is broken.
  
  This lenient sentencing for a shitty upbringing gets it all wrong.

    Needless to say also that just because I don’t see blight symptoms on my plants doesn’t mean that blight spores are not present and waiting to pounce. They are – and the years where my spray programme has been deficient, BAM, I get crop collapse from 2-3 weeks from first symptoms appearing.

      When I lived in Australia, about 25 years ago, the Supermarket code on pricing was that if the shelf label differed from the price at the checkout you got the item free. That applied even if the price at the checkout was lower. They wanted to know if the checkout price was wrong you see.
      I have no idea if they still do that.
      I got a turkey one Christmas because the price was out by a dollar at the register.
      I do sympathise with your Store Manager though. You obviously knew that the price was wrong.

1. I have instructed a committee to look into that.
2. I waiting for the committee to report back.
3. The committee‘s report will be released in due course.

1. “What gives you the right to condemn a young person?” Who has the Principal condemned? As far as I can see she has warned, not condemned.

In some cases – yes. Even if absences are reduced by 5% her effort is not in vain.

4. “If your students are leaving during the day they are obviously not buying the kind of education you are selling.” Surely a cast iron argument for Charter Schools or alternative education delivery – but over the NZEI’s and PPTA’s dead bodies.

    The children are voting with their feet.
    My 11 yr old departs the house at 7:15 regularly to get to his special character school. His brother 13 at 10:05 am today has just left for school. His sister of 17 we may not see until tomorrow. She’s working part time during the day and completing work at home for NCEA 3. Majoring in drama and voice she only needs to appear at her special character school 2-3 times a week. A niece of similar age, living close by, does the weekday 8:30-3:30 on a studious Kiwi indoctrination program.

In my view the greatest contributor to these goings on is the massive tentacle spread of the welfare state.

I know this place – intergenerational welfare dependency directly causing failed and wrecked lives.

Our politicians have failed us in this area and over decades. The cause is lost. I fear it will be political suicide for any pollie to take this on in future because so much of the electorate is now economically illiterate and has such a unsatiable sense of entitlement, and to other people’s money.

Looking back on the 10th anniversary of the 2008 banking crash, and who do we see at the forefront of blame? Yes, Barack Obama, the gift that keeps on giving.

At the heart of this disaster was a 1995 amendment to the US Community Reinvestment Act, which imposed on banks a legal requirement to lend money to buy homes to millions of poor, mainly black Americans, guaranteed by the two biggest US mortgage associations, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

No one had campaigned more actively for this change to the law than a young but already influential Chicago politician, Barack Obama. It was this Act that, more than anything, helped to create the US housing bubble, well beyond the point where it was obvious that hundreds of thousands of homeowners would be likely to default. And in 2005, when moves were made to halt Fannie Mae’s reckless guarantees, no one more actively opposed them than the man who, by then, had become Senator Obama.

As official records showed, no senator received more campaigning donations from Fannie Mae (although Hillary Clinton ran him close). I first reported on this in January 2009, just after Obama had become president, noting how he had, by then, become vociferous in blaming the banks for the crisis.

  I own a copy of Lawrence Meyer’s “A Term at the Fed” and it he explains his nomination process in the mid 1990s and how the likes of Joe Stiglitz, Larry Summers, Reich etc were all obsessed with the Community Reinvestment Act, because Bill was behind it and if Meyer didn’t support it they wouldn’t nominate him (he personally didn’t give a crap about it).

So I was just in the car and one of the stations saved on my radio is radio live, which I’m sick and tired of so I changed it to zb and Chris Lynch and a caller were discussing Cindy, her mother, a taxpayer funded nanny had travelled to NY and they are staying a taxpayer funded apartment. Any truth to this? I haven’t seen this mentioned anywhere.

Strawberries:
On TV3, someone wrote in and said “why don’t the use metal detectors, they only cost $200”
This kind of stupid is dangerous.
$200 at the warehouse for PLAYING on the beach.
$12000 for a basic one for industrial use.
My solution:
The are such things as industrial magnets, for removing ferrous contaminants from free flow food items.
They are extremely strong (yes expensive)
Put them on the collection bins in the fields
Put them on the delivery conveyors to the packing systems
Put them (before the lids are put on) after the packing
THEN through the metal detector
This will remove much of the contamination and tell you WHERE the contamination is getting in.
USE the needle contaminated strawberries
Strawberry sauce
Strawberry juice
any other ideas?

Tiger Woods wins the Tour Championship. 1876 days since his 79th win on the PGA Tour, he wins his 80th.

The guy has been through a lot, much of it self-inflicted. But his return this season after spinal fusion surgery has been little short of a miracle, when most people had written him off as a force in the golfing world.

The gallery today at Eastlake was insane, and there’s no question that professional golf is a far better spectacle with a fit, competitive Tiger Woods. He’s far more humble than he was, and he’s clearly changed during his years in the wilderness.

Christine Blasey Ford’s high school yearbooks, which are filled with references to drunken promiscuous parties where the attendees were not able to remember what happened, have been scrubbed from the Internet.

The Cult of the First Amendment blog was able to save copies of the yearbooks before they disappeared.

Christine Blasey Ford claims that Judge Brett Kavanaugh “physically and sexually assaulted” her during a party in the early 80’s when she was 15 and Kavanaugh was 17, although two other people Ford claims were present when the assault happened have denied that it ever happened.

Ford’s yearbooks, which cover her sophomore, junior and senior years, the exact time frame when she claims the assault happened, portray a debauched environment of constant binge drinking and partying.

The fact that Ford’s high school years were replete with drunken parties which attendees could barely remember is an important detail given her apparent difficulty to remember specifics about the time when Kavanaugh allegedly assaulted her.

The yearbooks appear to have been mysteriously scrubbed from the web on Monday September 17.

  Seems there is already being too much wealth being “redistributed” from those who were too busy building assets to be reporting to a base for handouts every fortnight.
  However the strongest message that rang through all of his waffle was the clear signal it is HIM more than the TWG in charge working to his agenda as provided by those who chose him. That is scary stuff.

    Feel free to put the more accurate numbers in yourself, but I think the principle holds.
    There are approximately 2 000 000 tax payers, business’, wage, salary etc
    The govt. spends about $160 000 000 000
    That’s about $80 000 each
    Unless you have paid your $80 000 toward the cost of living/being in New Zealand.
    Then I suggest you shut up, AFTER you thank those that topped up your share.

    I didn’t know much about it.
    So I looked it up.
    It took me about an hour to find about 4 reports.
    2 about the USA
    1 about the impact of CGT on franchises (like McD’s) in South Africa.
    1 about the Australian version, by an American (Alan Reynolds) commissioned by the ASX.
    It was quite comprehensive
    It wasn’t about whether you should or shouldn’t it’s purpose was to review the RATE at which Aus. should set CGT (as they already had one)
    BUT
    The 99 pages make very scary reading, if you view it from the perspective of NZ and not having one.

I’m still at a loss with the surrounding reasons as to why AM Show Amanda Gillies is STILL renting?! She has been making 6x figured salary both here and in Oz for at least the last 10-15yrs…she gives no reasoning and just accepts the fact that she is now the de facto spokesperson when it comes to renting on the AM show. Is she saving up to buy outright, did she miss the boat when she could buy and is now embarrassed she can’t afford the size/style of house she wants?….she lives in Hawkes Bay and surely the houses are cheaper there than in Auckland for the last decade and more. I’m just annoyed I guess that she gets to bemoan the fact she is a renter and the 2 other presenters don’t just say ‘why didn’t you buy a house when you have had plenty of opportunity’, perhaps she likes being a renter so she can pretend to be ‘one of the poor renters’ then be an expert!?

I note that Wellingtonians are protesting their dreadful (new) bus services. Good on them. Why aren’t Aucklanders protesting their equally dreadful new bus services. Are Aucklanders just too lazy or too punch drunk from all the shit thrown at them? Why in heavens name should people have to change buses, or want to, when they used to be able to stay on one bus? The bus company is trying to force people out of cars, well, hello?, you are forcing people back into them you morons. Put new routes up, by all means, but don’t take away the old ones.

  Last Thursday bus from where I live to Auckland City, but had to walk (heaven forbid) from Custom St to Sky City. Same 2 days later return trip. But to get from where I live on the Shore to Rosedale (where I work) it takes 3 buses, plus a 100M walk/run. Takes almost 2 hours each way, yet on a Sunday it is a 7 minute drive. Public Transport? stick it up your arse. Hey I used my super old card to get to the city and back bah!

  Presumably the media had t but their own ticjkets this time and the Maori Concert Party would be paid for by the Taxpayer.
  Should be all right for APEC in PNG in November when she will probably take the B757 with all her pallies on board. Air NZ does not fly there, but it is her airline so anything might happen.
  If it does break down as happened twice when Key was on Board up east way.

So the delightful kids of Fraser High School are protesting that the principal has warned kids of the negative consequences that are associated with wagging school.

She has done the right thing. But the kids, apparently, want to wag school and not experience, or even hear about, negative consequences of their actions.

124 countries have signed up with Trump’s planned “War on Drugs”. Jacinda says NZ will not be signing up but we will be doing our own thing. I’ll be honest and say that I haven’t read the fine print of either proposal but can imagine that Trump’s proposal could be elite troops dropping into South American jungles and shooting a lot of people. Whereas Jacinda’s proposal could be legally importing the drugs and having boutiques shops where you can buy your drug of choice.

  We chased and caught a lot of dealers etc, but we let them off with a wet bus ticket.

The UN General Assembly is a non-event, it’s more like a wank-fest. But an expensive one.
Headlines have read that Ardern is regarded globally as a champion for progression, and that she has had to turn down hundreds of requests for interviews whilst in New York.
I call bullshit on that – might be time to do an OIA.

Jack Tame thinks he is being smart – he is actually dead wrong. Many of those tenants were thrown out because they were using or dealing.
So why should they compensation?

UP TO 150,000 Australians will be banned from heading overseas if they refuse to pay outstanding debts to the tax office, Centrelink or another federal agency.

  Landlords selling rentals will not drop property values, as many I know are giving good tenants (excellent credit ratings and assets) the chance to buy them at acceptable prices to both, on rent to buy deals.
