There are a couple of comments from kiwiblog contributor oob that are worth re-posting for wider circulation. The first one was this, from September 7

And then this, from yesterday

Okay I’m going to spill what I know. What follows is uncorroborated hearsay from oob on the Internet, make of it what you will.

Several months ago a senior member of the NZ police, disgruntled by Mike Bush’s statement to the Press, contacted me asking if I could arrange questions to be asked under parliamentary privilege.

This person alleged:

1. Clarke Gayford’s cellphone number was identified in a sweep of a drug dealer’s phone number.

2. Clarke Gayford’s cellphone number exchanged text messages with the drug dealer’s cellphone number, concerning the purchase of “lawnmowers.”

I told the senior member of the NZ police that I might be able to pass this along but I would require some corroboration. This person was unwilling to provide corroboration so that is where we left it.

For what it’s worth, I’ve known this person for a long time and I thoroughly trust them. I believe these allegations to be true.

Remember Jacinda, it’s not the scandal that gets you. It’s the coverup. And you’ve been working overtime on this coverup. We’re coming for ya. Just sayin’

      That is a reasonable assumption, but if someone was going to prosecute, they would need proof she knew. It could be that others around her tried to protect her, without her knowledge. People have done sillier things. You don’t want her walking from this squeaky clean as it implodes around her – unless of course she is squeaky clean in which case she can use it to weed out the scum and put in good people. And pigs could fly – LOL.

    As I recall, Arden and Gayford have been ‘an item’ for at least three years now.
    
    I also recall a veiled comment from Cameron Slater (yes, I know), posted on WOBF about the time the CoL was formed, about a senior Labour MP’s partner having purchased cocaine during the afternoon of election day. Obviously, there is no way of knowing if that is true; and, if so, who the MP and partner might be.

  Now, what makes this interesting is that the police, in an unprecedented, way stated that the first sperm donor was not under investigation. I know there were “rumours”, but so what, there are rumours about lots of people, but never before have the police specifically made this statement. Now we have Fuckwit ILG doing everything he can to dodge the facts of the case. Simple people like me start to add things up…. If there is one thing I really hope, is that this blows up like a nuke in their faces. Because if the adding up is true, the facts will come out and SLG will have that frowny face on for a long time.

A Maori land protester is planning mass rallies against Fletcher Residential at Mangere, likening it to Bastion Point for its importance to those opposing a just-allowed 480-residence housing scheme.

That would be just-allowed by the Environment Court, not notably on the side of big business.

Not sure what Ms Newton hopes to achieve by encouraging even more illegal occupiers on to privately owned land. No doubt Fletchers will take a softly softly approach, in case a few taniwha suddenly materialise, but build they can and will.

So small independent electricity retailers are squealing at the way the five ‘gentailers’ allegedly carry on. The main problem is they are undercapitalised for the task (compared with the gentailers who are well capitalised as they own the generating plant). It is relatively easy to set up a power retailer who can carry on happily for several years by buying cheap electricity. But when the wind stops blowing and rainfall in hydro lake watersheds is low, they get caught between a rock and a hard place so want the Electricity Authority to tilt the playing field in their direction.

  Here, I think is the ‘logic’. It’s biological determinism to suggest that sex is for producing babies – that’s wrong apparently. So what is sex for then? Fun! But women don’t always want to do it – confusing because if it’s fun, then surely they would be doing it all the time. Must be due to patriarchal oppression I guess. Well we’ll teach them how to enjoy sex again. Sadly, you then end up with young women having meaningless sex and wondering why they are unhappy. And the men don’t know either, so they are unhappy too. Plus, added bonus, it breaks down the ‘patriarchal’ family structure that oppresses women and children even if they don’t realise it.

  There were multiple videos doing the rounds of Twitter and the news channels last night, including the shooting itself of the terrorist by a very heroic police officer.
  
  The two cops who took him down deserve the highest bravery awards, and there should also be awards to the bystanders who helped the police, using things like chairs and shopping trolleys to try and get the terrorist to ground.

        Cops of today need to be able to safely deal with the threats they face on our behalf. That sometimes means the ability to administer deadly force is necessary.

        20 seconds is to allow for people whose first language may not be English. 20 seconds is better than the 43 seconds plus and I suspect some incidents may last for minutes. The police could make known the 20 Second Rule to all of society so people will know that is the limit of the police’s patience.

      This is a great opportunity for a smart NZ political party to tap into populism. I doubt National has the smarts to pick it up.
      
      Trump took America out of the pact last year. Australia says it won’t sign. Poland and Austria are among other countries that have rejected the compact. There is vigorous debate in Germany about whether it should sign.
      
      Given falling birth rates in the West and soaring birth rates in the Third World, the compact is highly relevant to NZ. It is even more relevant because it mentions Global Warming migration.
      
      You can read the compact at the link below. It’s mostly trendy rubbish that illustrates how the United Nations has evolved into a Leftist international bureaucracy that seeks to subsume independent nations.
      
      Leftists such as Labour will sell it to us as being merely about orderly migration, and point out it is non-binding. Don’t trust them!
      
      The first “Global Refugee Forum” under the compact will be held next year at “ministerial level”. This is “to announce concrete pledges
      and contributions towards the objectives of the global compact.”

  Like many Kiwis I visit Melbourne at least once a year. (It is quicker for me to get to Melbourne than it is for me to get to many cities in NZ.)
  
  It’s a lovely city and its multicultural vibe is one of its attractions.

      Ever been to Lygon Street or Chinatown in the evening? It’s fascinating to see such a concentration of eating places with similar cuisines, all well-patronised. Lygon Street is our particular favourite; bartering with the maitre d’s outside all the Italian places to see who will give us the best deal.
      
      I bring a Scottish approach to value for money to an iconic Italian eating district, and that’s a pretty good “multicultural vide” I reckon 😀

      For me it means life happening 24hr/day…. the place doesn’t close down at 5pm.
      
      There is exposure to people, ideas, products that I don’t encounter here in NZ.
      
      Because food is an ever constant in my life….
      
      Food – Vietnamese restaurants galore – Try Richmond for choice (“Anchovy” is on my must eat at list)
      Korean & Chinese food stores
      S.E. Asian restaurants ( “Sunda”)
      Melbourne South Market Cheese Room – selection of cheeses from everywhere
      
      gorgeous colourful clothing being worn,
      lots of different languages being spoken,
      
      Bookstores– wider variety of material on display than I can find in NZ
      
      Other folks might have different interests/experiences.

    Yes MW Melbourne city as well as the surrounding areas are indeed a wonderful place to visit but to see the the place as it really is you need to reside there for a while. Many parts of the city have already been claimed by various ethnic groups who all seem to hate all others while creating many no-go areas for the majority. Each are known for their dominance in not only their type of crime but also their “commercial” activity. In residential areas it not so much crime watch but crime watch out for yourself as most others live in their own bubble. But boy do they know how to build good roads over there that are also popular with visiting criminals slipping in and out on their drug funding raids. According to the insurance accessor who said all our burgled possessions would be long gone. This was in response to the police suggested checking the Pawnshops which he said was pointless after a day spent doing just that. Yes a great place to visit.

  When I visited Sydney last week, both (female) border security officers I encountered were wearing hijab head coverings. They were both friendly and pleasant, but it did cross my mind that even five years ago, this would not have been a thing.
  
  Just as an aside, in the 70s very large numbers of Lebanese emigrated to Australia. They had high birth rates, so now we have third generation young men from those immigrants. Still happening as we note from the latest release showing such a low figure. Like a $27000 handout to a charity group who hired a handicapped girl for “office” work on a limited term placing. Or $20000 odd to get a regional ethnic woman into a public service job in Wellington. These special schemes all have supplementary funds to facilitate the shuffling process which some key staff struggled to do what they were instructed to do. Particularly those who were aware of much more deserving recipients locked out simply because of gender/race preferences being the dictates. Even in the days of glide time.

Back in 2015, Obama was holding a press conference in the White House when a reporter kept interrupting him, shouting out questions. I saw a clip from a 2007 Democratic debate on NAFTA and Obama said that as soon as he was elected he would get on the phone and “call the President of Mexico and the PRESIDENT of Canada” to renegotiate the deal. There is a lot of comment about sending good teachers to lower decile schools to miraculously improve the lot of the students there. The reality is that you could send some of the best teachers in the world to those schools, and very little would change, as many of those students in those schools just don’t want to do anything except play at being “gangstas”. And they have the support of their deadbeat parents. Not surprisingly, the worst offenders are Maori. Teachers soon become picky about the schools they want to teach at.   I had a client who was a te reo immersion teacher. She was talked into moving to the school with a reputation for behavioural difficulties, which was bringing in expertise from the US to manage the problems in the school and support the teachers with proven techniques. The students’ behaviour so bad she left at the end of the year. Sounds like they were pretty much feral – I think they need to bring the army in. They can work wonders with disadvantaged young people once you take them away from the bad influences at home.

  Winston said from his speech in Wgtn last Oct when he anointed Cindy as the PM:

  He did not announce which portfolios anyone had, or what his role was in Govt (that was the role of the PM) but he clearly stated that they negotiated the 10,000 homes kiwibuild program.
  
  Now let’s watch NZF crawl out of responsibility for this program when it all goes tits up and fails to even get close to its target of 10,000 homes per annum.

  That article didn’t make too much sense. If she is receiving sole parent benefit for herself and seven children she won’t also be getting child support from the father. It will be going to the government to offset the benefit.
  
  Oh, I forgot, no sanctions for declining to name the dad. So why would she? Financially much better off to be on the benefit plus get contributions from the father. Better than being a two parent family with one parent working.

    There is consequences for fathers not named on birth certificates.
    Often done as blatant benifit fraud from the beginning as they can live together, get the benifit, and he can work as well. Not naming the father makes it nearly impossible for the authorities to know who it is and identify the benifit fraud.
    When the relationship ends the father can find himself powerless. He cannot go to the courts to see the kids. Extortion by the mother for under the table payments is commen at this point. The threat of her naming him putting him into the official system is compelling.
    Before you say it’s his fault.
    Men very rarely create birth certificates and cannot stop not being named or being named as the father. Any attempt to address errors by the father, or not father is at considerable expense, with often severe long term effects.

And some of them have too many at once.
I was lucky to be brought up by my two natural parents with a brother, and a father who had a good job at a time when only the men worked.

I don’t mind coordinated labour input but perhaps it should be flagged as such in the interests of “open and transparent ” governance.

Sorry people, my mistake, that’s just a smokescreen from Ardern. What we have is the most dishonest concealed shit house government so far…

President Donald Trump responded after former First Lady Michelle Obama slammed Trump in her upcoming memoir.

He was asked by a reporter about the comment on Nov. 9 before he got on a plane. “She got paid a lot of money to write a book. And they always insist that you come up with controversial,” Trump told reporters.

Trump didn’t specifically address the former first lady’s comments, but he made a statement about former President Obama’s administration and how it dealt with the military.

“Well, I’ll give you a little controversy back. I’ll never forgive him for what he did to our United States military. By not funding properly, it was depleted. Everything was old and tired. And I came in and I had to fix it,” the president said. “What he did to the military made this country very unsafe.”

OPINION: Recent reports of sexual misconduct connected with work drinks have put this hospitable practice under the spotlight. Many people may be unaware that hosting drinks can be illegal. Aimee Dartnall of commercial-regulatory law firm Franks Ogilvie explains.

Don’t alcohol laws only apply to bars and bottle stores?

The law makes it illegal to use any unlicensed premises as a ‘place of resort’, i.e, a place where alcohol plays a “substantial” role in the event. That could be at your office, your local community hall – even your home. Drinking, selling and supplying alcohol at an unlicensed premises is often illegal.

My home?! Seriously?

The act expressly allows you to drink in your home and to share your alcohol with guests. Your guests can bring alcohol to give to you, and you can share it with them and any other guests. But they cannot bring alcohol to keep for their own consumption. Nor can they help you pay for yours.

Otherwise, you can be prosecuted for letting people drink alcohol at any place you control. For employers, this includes your office.

That’s crazy. Surely I won’t be prosecuted if my friends BYO to a Sunday BBQ?

Probably not. Drinking alcohol still has to be a “substantial” part of the event. But it will depend on the occasion: are you having a few beers at a barbecue, or a BBQ to soak up the beers?

In 2015 the host of a house party in Napier did everything right – he hired security to check ID at the door, he checked if he needed an alcohol licence and he spoke to police before the event. When the party got out of control the host helped police shut it down – then was charged for operating a place of resort.

The court ruled that police needed only to prove that alcohol was an “integral part” of the event, which was at an unlicensed premises. On this occasion, the host was discharged without conviction.

What about a small workplace like mine?

Again, it depends on how key drinking is to the event. Work drinks can be problematic. Just because police haven’t prosecuted before, doesn’t mean they won’t in future. And there are signs of a growing regulatory intolerance.

Last year, police warned hairdressers in Dunedin against offering a glass of wine to clients. Wine as part of the service is considered a ‘sale’.

More recently, police opposed bowling club applications for licence renewal on a technical interpretation of the law, rather than evidence of alcohol-related harm.

And if I break the law??

The penalties for non-compliance are hefty. You could be fined $40,000 or jailed for three months, for sale and supply, or up to $20,000 for supply alone. Attendees can also be fined $2000 just for being there.

What does a licence do?

A licence will protect you from prosecution. But the act only allows licences for events where alcohol is ‘sold’ to attendees, so you’ll have to show you will be ‘selling’ drinks.

The definition of sale is broad. It could include social club contributions. You can also charge a fee or ask people to pay a koha on entry.

So where does this leave us?

Every time you host drinks, you run the risk of prosecution. If alcohol isn’t a substantial part of your event you should be OK. But you can’t always control people attending events and police may come knocking if things go wrong.

If you want to play it safe, you could hire a licensed caterer or relocate to the pub.

  Ivy Zelman, at the time the housing market analysis at Credit Suisse, had seen the bubble forming very early on. There is a simple measure of sanity in housing prices, the ratio of median house price to income.
