I get the feeling that the phrase ‘reading between the lines’ is going get many airings in and out of the House. And pillars will be regularly and carefully inspected for hiding Ministers. The House version of Pokemon Go.

        I occasionally catch some of the kids’ story time on National Radio – just while the coffee is brewing you understand. There is always a Wiremu, a Tama, a Hone or a Moana. Sometimes all of the above.
        
        Clearly there has been a memo – if you want to be on the wireless and get paid, follow the rule. Bonus payment if ‘New Zealand’ is not mentioned.

        It is excruciatingly bad.
        Does any child listen to it? Mine never did. (But they never woke before 8am).

        The quickest way to sort out Radio New Zealand would be to require it to be self-supporting, or even largely self-supporting, through advertising.

        When I was a kid Storytime was a wonderful thing.
        I have a set of CDs from RNZ Replay Radio that get played in the car on long trips.
        Diana and the Golden Apples, Sparky and the talking train, etc all get played in the car on long trips with the grands. The Happy Prince still puts a little dust in the eye.
        Listening to stories helps train kids to listen to other things – like instructions.
        Danny Kaye was another favourite.

The irony is very visual as they were steadily marionated for the length of their visit by the very people who in days gone by would have had them in their pot. I think the whole Sroubek saga is going to hurt Labour badly, but not quite the way some people think.

Much is being made of ILG and PriNZess’ incompetence, but that is not so important. They were never selling themselves as competent. They were selling themselves as the people that care.

And the way people judge that is: do they care for people like me?

How many people empathise with a drug dealing crim? Far more people can empathise with various people of far better character that have been thrown out over recent months.

As an example, the South African family with the kid with kidney problems said they would pay their own medical expenses. They might have ended up costing us $300k or so in extra medical expences, but Sroubek has already cost us over a million in police, court and incarceration etc and would cost us more.

Another example: the overstayer islanders working in the fruit industry are all more deserving than Sroubek.

This also comes at a time when Kiwibuild, another one of the “Labour cares” programs has served up a four bedroom house to a professional couple with a top-decile income. Very few people will see that as caring for people like me.

This will also compound Labours problems in going softly on crime and drugs. Crime is always a good barrel thumping cause and most people have had a gutsful of P etc. Andy going soft on crims has just been amplified.

Then add in killing off charter schools and people really struggle with answering “Do they care about people like me?” to Labour’s advantage.

Where the competence will damage Labour is in their quest for bringing hundreds of Manus Islanders and other Australian rejects to NZ. PriNZess has repeatedly assured us that they will be well vetted. Since they can’t vet a single person from a well documented background, how are they ever going to vet a flood of people from shitholistam countries?

      See the JLR saga was bad for National, but unlike what the 6PM news will tell you, the royal visit was a stroke of luck for them. While lefty spin will say Cindy was hob-nobbing with Meghan as an international figure but the truth is Harry & Meghan killed the JLR story and it has been replaced by the utterly ridiculous story of a mean arse drug dealer being given soft arse treatment. Besides most people I interact with think that Cindy’s performance over the last week has been cringe worthy, no vomit worthy. Naturally, Colmar Brunton won’t suspend its prior polling to focus on the fall out from this one.

    A couple of points:
    
    1) No polls yet reflect the impact of the Kiwibuild house lottery or the Sroubek cock-up.
    
    2) Polls do not adequately show whether people are motivated to vote or not.
    
    Lots of the Labour “bounce” in 2017 was due to Labour putting up PriNZess as leader and many people getting sucked in by her message of caring.
    
    Many 2017 Labour voters would just not bother now, but the polls don’t reflect that.

      Plus the polls are skewed. I have been rung 3 times by polling companies for political polls and have been rejected everytime due to my post code (a true blue electorate) and my age. They clearly don’t want my opinions.

        Of course they do. Not Curia of course but some poll companies trying to please their masters the Left Wing MSM who pay them will ask questions to favour the COL and disfavour the Nats. They will ignore people like lifesgood by postcode filtering so its hard to accuse them.
        
        As many a pollie has said the only poll that matters is the one on election day.
        
        And on that note can I repeat my frequent request that before going into a polling booth voter should have yo pass an IQ test and political knowledge test.
        
        Why you ask. So only those with a brain and a knowledge of what they are voting for get to vote.
        
        Voting should be a privilege reserved for those who can prove they are worthy for the task.

      Also, we got zero polls in the period where all Labour’s stuff ups were in the news, but two in the single period where National was troubled.
      I doubt that a poll taken two weeks earlier would have been favourable to the coalition.
      It was noted in the 1 News poll that mid week National had been down to mid 30’s then recovered, which indicates what a non representative poll it really was.

    Yes. I was absolutely gobsmacked at a family function the other day when I made some throwaway comment about one of the stupid things Adern has done, and I was vehemently taken to task for not appreciating her fantastic competency and skills. I kid you not.
    
    I couldn’t believe it. This was a group of middle New Zealanders; some of them professional, none on a benefit and some with university degrees. And they ALL seemed to think that this ‘government’ is getting things right! Admittedly, a lot of them are white bone carving wearers… but FFS!
    
    I think this country is in deeper shit than we realise, frankly. Either that or KiwiBlog readers are completely out of touch with reality and everything is just fine… we don’t need an oil and gas industry, trees are being planter hell-for- leather, Kiwi build is going great guns, business is booming and every suburb needs the enriching diversity of newly released criminals, refugees and its own nice mosque.

      In Auckland it’s easy to gain the impression that the streets are paved with smashed avocados on toast; there are so many cafes packed with $35-breakfast-eating tourists and locals.
      The skyline of Auckland is a row of cranes, busily erecting new high-rise shopping centers (so many “centers”) and apartments. On my own local street (Kepa Road) there are two major luxury apartment complexes under construction.
      I can forgive people with jobs (where bone carvings are an asset) for thinking that the CoL is the best thing since sliced Weetbix.

        Yes, but they forget that all these projects came about during and because of “9 years of neglect by National”. My bet is that by election 2020, the number of cranes will be significantly diminished. A lot of projects will have come to an end, and very few new ones will have started.

    My memory goes back to the Keith Jacka Holyoake Government 1960 to 1972. There have been some better and some worse but none come near to this clusterf… and especially in such a short time. In the past the problems usually appeared in the 3rd term when fatigue and arrogance started to kick in.
    
    With this lot the arrogance started on Day One and has continued.
    
    For those of us with lots of lifes experiences we smile knowingly when kids or those who act like kids start lecturing us on how to live our lives when they are wet behind the ears and just out of nappies compared to us.
    
    We have been there and bought the T shirt so we don’t need a bunch of snotty nosed kids telling us what to do and how to do it.

      I go back a bit further.
      In 1957 Labour won thanks to the promise of a 100 pound tax rebate for everyone (about $4000 in today’s money). Then a year later they took it all back with Nordmeyer’s famous Black Budget. That was the end of that ship of fools, Holyoake trounced them in 1960 and stayed in for 12 years.
      That ’57-’60 Labour Govt. was almost on a par with the current lot for incompetence. Almost.

  Actually Longknives today is All Saints Day which is when locals go to the centenary to have their evening meal with past family members. It sounds a little spooky but with all the candles being lit there are few dark spaced there. Not my thing but it would seem more appropriate tomorrow as it is All Souls Day but such is the tradition. However there will be plenty of pork and chicken consumed of home prepared dishes with the only stomach complaint being from too much.

  Interesting secondcumming apart from having more than the required 21 days for the ship jumping law to be used. Seemed funny his proxy vote was not included in the party vote count in the house for extending the sitting last night. National 55 votes plus the ACT vote made it 56 against with 63 for. Such a big list of bills again needing urgency to progress forward as we suspect the COL are rapidly getting short of time before the House rises for the summer break. Not helped with with another 2 week R&R break later this month in keeping with Labour’s work ethics.

It was good to wake to the news that Asia Bibi, the poor Christian woman kept on death row in Pakistan for 10 years on a blasphemy charge, has been freed by the Supreme Court. Her life remains in great peril however from rioters urged on by muslim clerics. Lees-Galloway should immediately offer to take her as a refugee. But maybe that’s not possible, because it appears on the face of it that New Zealand’s refugee program is managed by the local chapter of the muslim brotherhood. And meanwhile just down the road the Human Rights Commission is no doubt studying Pakistan’s blasphemy law for any learnings which might be implemented here on “disharmonious speech”.

Ms Collins has issued a press release about state house security issues in the McLennan development, following on from a Question in the House yesterday.

Seems there is a problem with door locking systems and Housing NZ is not acting to remedy. One state house tenant has been burgled three times in two weeks, with the latest burglary defined by police as “aggravated burglary with intent to rape” and entry achieved with a screwdriver.

Seems the 600 home McLennan development is to have 15% social housing – that would be about 90 homes in a highly concentrated environment. I hope Kiwibuild and on-market buyers are aware and check their security systems very very carefully..

  Bollocks, these new homes are a rip-off.
  Having said that, a friend once indicated to me (and I’ll never forget it) that is a burglar wants to get into your home, all they have to do is break a window.
  Note: This can be done in a very quiet manner, so there is no real security – other than every home is attached to monitored alarms etc. I don’t see that being very reliable either, as by the time either police or security companies arrive, the burglar is long gone.

    These areas will be slums in 5 years. Where I live they tried this so called pepper potting when the area was developed in the late 1970s. Thank God only a few State Houses were built although lately HC have been taking down the originals and replacing with 3 on each section as they are the good old quarter acre.
    So over the years visitors to the area have been easily able to “Spot the State House”
    
    Telltale signs include
    Grass not mowed.
    Kids toys all over the front yard
    Car wrecks on front lawn.
    Broken windows
    Peeling paint.
    
    Contrast that with the owner occupier houses either side
    
    Lawns mowed
    Tidy yards
    Well maintained.
    
    But of course we aren’t allowed to say such things now that the Thought Police are in control.

      lastmanstanding, that is too simplistic. I’ve been in many state houses (in official capacity) and some wer immaculate. Especially older and Pacific Island tenants. Most places were average, some were dreadful. The usual distribution curve but skewed towards to the dreadful end.
      
      The big recent change, apart from the waiting list doubling in the past 2 years, is the large number of single working age people – nearly half- emphasis on age, not working. Some of these will have issues which make them dodgy neighbours. In a concentrated environment only need a couple off their meds or on self medication to be a real problem.

      Yup, that was my old street. Nice old 50s houses, many of them done up nicely, as ours was. But there were a bunch of state houses studded around the area, and they were dead easy to spot.
      
      More recently, the elderly owner-occupier of one half of a duplex unit right on the corner of our present street passed on. The family put the unit up for sale and it was bought by… HNZ. The other half of the duplex is still beautifully maintained by its lovely elderly owners. Beautiful garden, smart little car in the garage, mown berm, all that stuff. But the HNZ half has grass literally up to the window sills (I am NOT exaggerating), rubbish up and down the path, rugby flags hanging in the windows, crappy old cars parked outside on the street, grass growing in the spouting… you get the picture. Must be heartbreaking and stressful for the old couple in the other half. Every time I go past the hovel half I feel like marching in there and hammering the door down and telling the scumbags to clean their fucking shit up.

        Tenancy and property managers at Housing NZ even have protocols surrounding the health hazards of fleas due to the keeping of such pets.

  Right KevOB it is starting to show the benefits of establishing a strong team unity while the COL were self harming now that is starting to pay off. They are developing strong forces in the House as more of them take the charge especially since the Speaker has been measured. Questions are being constructed to conform with Mallards new rules gaining more value by being persistent and pointed. Now even Mallard is finding the COL’s question responses “tedious” and is frequently instructing them to try again or cut the crap of firing barbs at the opposition. The biggest challenge is calling the COL to account for ALL the rapidly increasing number of targets they are providing. Added to which the number of incompetent Ministers has been established at a much greater level than expected with others still to get a chance to fail. We also had a glimpse of a much better level of discipline today as the important supplementary allocation was never threatened by their actions. They were further assisted by the Speaker becoming increasingly critical of Minsters avoiding questions. Great way to end the weeks OQT.

Donald Trump was arguing with Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, Hillary Clinton and Barrack Obama as to whom God really was. Nancy started off that God was a Democrat from California as he welcomed the downtrodden into her state. Hillary argued that God was a woman otherwise man would have no one to argue with. Barack calmly walked up to the group and presented the fact that God was a transsexual as his laws and love were meant for all of the sexes. Donald by now was getting ready to Tweet before Barrack grabbed his arm and demanded that he just rebut these views there and then and leave the media out of the discussion.
Donald was delighted and beside himself not having to deal with the one-sided media and seeing Barrack shared his views of them.
“God was a Democrat …” Donald loudly proclaimed. Pelosi plastic face cracked, Chuck’s heart gave out, Hillary had a fatal stroke, but Barrack remaining asked Donald why he would give such his political foes such a compliment.
Donald finished by saying, “God was a Democrat…who else could have created chaos in the universe and all of the confusion in the US?”

    Kiwibank has re-introduced some fees – $1 to deposit a cheque and new fees for ordering cheque and deposit books. And this applies to over 65’s too.
    Banks make their profits on lending – mortgages and credit card debt. There is risk to the bank so this justifies a profit. Then banks are required to have specified amounts of share capital to cover risks. These shareholders face losing their investment if the bank gets into significant trouble. The profits and dividends reward them for taking the risk.
    It is easy to buy shares in the ‘big four’ banks – via a sharebroker or internet trading account. You will enjoy reasonable dividends, BUT you could lost the lot. When making an investment decision on this, perhaps assume you will lose the lot in 20 years time, so the dividends must cover this potential loss as well as providing a reasonable return. If you cannot afford to lose the investment then don’t. Instead buy shares backed by hard assets – power generation companies, airports, commercial property companies etc.

ILG, I’m confident after careful consideration I made the right decision.

SLG, it was the correct decision, and if you read between the lines you will understand why it was the correct decision.

The Toxic Gnome – it was a difficult decision to make, on the facts presented it was the correct decision.

Last night the Czech’s lawyer – I was not aware he had travelled back to the Czech Republic. We will have to look into those claims.

Today on the radio:
1. ILG we will have to look I to the veracity of the new information provided; and

2. The Toxic Gnome – the letter issued by ILG gives the Immigration Minizter grounds to rescind the decision of it is found the original decision was based on inaccurate information.

There is a phrase best encapsulated in the 3 letters “FFS”, you couldn’t make this lot of lies and loves of incompotent decision making if you tried.

10 to 1, I bet:
1. The close relationship is between the Czech’s lawyer & the Labour prty;
2. ILG’s review of the case file was half baked, I doubt he asked any pertinent questions, & I doubt he read the last the adjudication of the Czech’s parole board hearing;
3. Serious questions need to be asked about the Czrch’s legal advisors in 2011 & his current lawyer; and
4. It is almost certain that neither the SLG or Peter’s have read any paperwork on this case.

These people are lazy incompotent liars. As a NZ voter & taxpayer, using whatever the current consumer protection legislation is, I would like to send the SLG, the Toxic Gnome and ILG back to the vendor/distributor and get our money back!

        A young guy from my cricket team just graduated Police College- He says the Maori component of the course seemed to be of most importance. (Maori introductions, Maori Prayers etc)
        He tells me it was endless and seemed like half the course.
        He was a little bemused by this as was hoping to learn more Self Defence and Firearm skills to keep himself (and the public) safe!

      Teachers can have a dangerous job too; there are some hyped up pupils, but often the parents are worse plus the ‘associates’ of the pupils. Not just the lower decile schools either.
      I once refed half a little kids rugby game. The parents lined up on the sidelines were like baying hounds. This was a cross section of NZ society who all thought my decisions had a bearing on whether or not their eight year old kids would make the ABs.
      I chucked it in at halftime. My boy never became an All Black, but he’s now a teacher!!

He was DISCHARGED WITHOUT CONVICTION on the passport offence, which meant the government was unable to trigger the deportation process. A known activist judge gave him a second chance.
        
        Also note that he first entered New Zealand, on a false passport, in 2003. Just for the record, Helen Clark’s Labour government was in charge then, and just two years after 9/11, you would have thought that border security was a little more stringent. Can anyone help me with the lies Sleeze and Cindy have told about their mate the drug dealer.

1. We were told he would be killed by either the Police or the Gangs if he went home. We now know he has been home and lived to tell the tale.

2. We were told NZ was a signatory to an unnamed international agreement that meant we have to let him stay.
So if Sleeze revokes his PR NZ will have breached that international agreement. Really!!!

BTW as I have posted before NZ has been working to get an FTA with the EU for over 5 years. These are difficult to do. To be fair the COL with Winston has made further progress one of the signs is the increasing number of increasingly senior people coming to NZ to discuss the matter.
By dissing the Czech Police (CR is a member of EU)the FTA could be delayed or deferred. This is how international diplomacy works. You piss me off you go to the back of the queue or your application falls off my desk into File 13. DUMB!!!!!

Leave to appeal to the supreme court will be sought for Mark Lundy, filed next week I believe.
It is important to analyse what is going on here without getting sidetracked by the standard motive of the appeal court to not disrupt a jury verdict.

After the privy council called it a miscarriage of justice because the Immunohistochemistry was flawed novel science, the police went for bandaids to their case.
1. They had the material that had been declared Central nervous system tissue by Rod Miller of Texas, analysed for dna. If there was any dna it should be Christine Lundy’s but they found none of that, what they found was cow sheep and pig dna, consistent with the food chain.
2, So lacking any link to say the alleged CNS tissue was human, they got the Netherlands Forensic Institute to design a bespoke experiment showing the mRNA was human, and went to court with this.
This bespoke experiment has just been declared inadmissable by the appeal court, and normally this would be an automatic new trial, but with the proviso that if the balance of the evidence was certain to result in the same verdict, no miscarriage would be declared.

I have seen all the paperwork showing every other item of evidence is false, and therefore the argument will be the proviso should not have been applied.
Immunohistochemistry will be attacked, but if you consider what the police did pre 2015 as outlined above, you can conclude they proved the shirt spot used to jail Lundy was from the foodchain and not from Christine’s brain.

  I can’t rationalise a person wearing something in the bloodbath that took place for a piece of clothing to have one spot of evidence.
  
  It’s more rational to say it was planted evidence.
  
  There is simply no way a person could commit that offence and not leave large amounts of transpher evidence.
  
  I also noticed in a doco that in some instances evidence was being presented as not explainable. In one example in regard to the location of the axe they presented Lundy’s explianation as not feasible but exactly the same scenario was true in my house.
  
  When that happens everything else starts looking dodgy.
  
  Why isn’t family DNA searches being done on the two unidentified males that left DNA at the scene. Until they are identified and that DNA explained we don’t know the truth.

        Once it’s normalised the punishment is expanded outside of due process. As has occured in the regular updates to the DV act and its application, and administration.
        
        They are clearly not shooting people, but false arrest, imprisonment without trial, indoctrination programmes, normalising of false accusations, removal of freedom of movement and travel, perjury, asset stripping, removing employment rights, family separation, confiscation of property, removal of right to self defence, condoning murder, and inducing suicide is common, normalised practice.
        
        I don’t like the term due to Godwins Law.

Holy crap – Just read about the Aussie squatter who claimed a deserted house with the full support of the law. His claim was successful under some archaic law, entitling/supporting squatters rights (over all other rights), and awarded costs against the family of the dead owner.
I thought this sort of thing only pertained to the UK.
Better watch out, lest NZ COL change our laws to enable squatters to take over vacant properties in this country.
What a calamity of justice against citizenry.

Leaving the house unoccupied creates more pressure on housing as available houses for living in decreases. A self fulfilled prophecy forcing up prices.

Some sensible policy on this please. Beach houses exempt by application etc. Time limits, with default to community rental providers if owner can’t self rent. IE they will rent if that’s the alternative.

Not that buying for short term Capital gian is wrong but is it sensible right now. More like an actual gamble.

    An example is that you could say to foreign buyers that if they buy a residential zoned home under $750,000 it must be occupied within 3 months.
    
    You might exempt 3 homes for a person. They may live in multiple homes but a portfolio of homes within defined residential areas might have restrictions.
    
    There is no justification for homes sitting empty in the suberbs like South Auckland when people live in cars just so the rich get richer.

        It is not a demand to use it. It is rules about ethical Buisiness. If a car is abandoned on the side of the road then it can be take away. A car is not a necessity of life but a roof over your head is in that catagory. You can rent a taxi or use a bus or push bike so you have options. You cannot live in a home if a small group is acting to prevent available homes from being used.
        
        The activity prevents reasonable access to a basic human right. There would still be nothing stopping you owing the bank moonbeams for many homes.
        
        Imagine you purchased all the food. Just to cause scarcity upping the price. The people begin to starve and you profiteer from the capital gain caused by your causing the scarcity. However to maintain the scarcity and price some people must actually starve.
        
        Just as some working families with kids are forced to live in their cars.
        
        If you choose to keep the house unoccupied while a family with kids, unable to find homes to rent, unable to afford rent, is living in a car etc. You are a miserable sod without an ethical compass.

    The extreme is a multi billionaire buys up all the houses in a suberb. Killing that suberb as it has no people living in it. Therefore with many people doing the same as you, a threshold is reached where real harm is caused to the community.
    
    I strongly believe in freedom of property rights. You should be free to buy property, but have some obligation to public welfare. Having 10% of Aucklands homes unoccupied is harming public welfare.
    
    As rents increase, I the taxpayer foot the bill, I subsidise low incomes, and fully fund the DPB. My taxes in rent subsidy go into the hands of the wealthy. Unoccupied homes in turn increase house prices helping the rich, and increase rents forcing me the taxpayer to give even more of my money to the rich.

  99% of women who don’t have this problem did not respond to the survey.
  
  It’s a common feminist social science method.
  
  Eg. Run a have you been sexually harrased in the workplace survey. Only go to 80% plus female industry. Make it voluntary. Present the results as The average worker based on the survey. You get double the bias.

  All this angst about women not having sanitary products. In my day it was a sorted with a homemade elastic belt and safety pins to hold everything together. Not comfortable but I never missed school, and I’m not aware of any other female doing so. We were expected to keep calm and carry on!

    And the smell!!!! when the school menstrual pad incinerator was turned on…..

    In fact better for younger girls than tampons, given the possibility of toxic shock syndrome, especially if they do not change them regularly. Given how plastic nappies are kept on babies for a long time because of the cost the same could happen with tampons. I think pads better for girls, especially if the taxpayer is funding this.
    (I had a grown friend die of toxic shock syndrome in the 1980s.)

    I agree.. that the best tampons are expensive… and if you have a household of females (I only had 2 teenage girls) menstrual products make a hole in your budget.
    
    But all secondary schools will have pads/tampons on hand…no need for the girls to miss school.

      Countdown has own brand pads for $2 a pack. Less than one big bottle of coca cola or a packet of crisps.
      And much better than the old towels mum used to rip up for us to wear – lovely to smell them soaking in the washhouse and see them hanging on the clothesline and far worse to wear the scratchy horrible things.
      But imagine staying home from school!

        Perhaps your stats are a bit light…
        I wouldn’t recommend 1 pad or 1 tampon/24 hours….At least a change at night….. So nearer 10-14 items /period….
        
        But once you’ve had a couple of kids (at least) and head into your 40s.. then bloody hell can let loose….
        I’d double-up on Carefree super tampons at a time and change every few hours…. Easily went through a packet of 30 each cycle.

I was around a friends place last night. He showed me some clones of different strains. Intends to use them as mother plants for more clones.

I asked him how much weed is selling for as I just buy the occasional tinny. My understanding was the price had risen from around $300 to $350 in the last few years. He informed me they go for $700 an ounce in Auckland.

That’s about $10,000 a plant.

For the first time in a long, long while there is an excellent post on W O H B.

It is not the words, it is the photograph that says it all.
Remember the cruddy dress sense. Nay deliberate insult by Clark and her trousers worn at a State Reception when The Queen last visited?
The trousers were not only a breech of protocol, and contrary to the official advice she received from Internal Affairs and Government House, but they were deliberately insulting to The Queen.
For all that Clark’s trousers were properly cut and the rest of her attire reasonably satisfactory.
But today just one photograph and a pithy caption published by Whale Oil today, expose Ardern as the trollop that she is – and both an embarrassment and insult to ALL New Zealanders. The photograph features just three people – Markle (fashionably dressed), Harry (fashionable suit and open necked shirt), and Ardern (in an over-size coat and trollops ankle boots).

A good article on Stuff by Karl Du Fresne on abortion…

It can make sense only if the incipient human life is considered intrinsically valueless unless its mother happens to want it. Is that what we’ve come to? In which case, in what circumstances does a life become worth saving?

A similar question arose last year amid the general rejoicing at the news that Jacinda Ardern was having a baby. Many of the people who expressed delight at the prime minister’s pregnancy and the subsequent birth of Neve Te Aroha Ardern Gayford support the right of women to have an abortion, no questions asked.

But isn’t it odd that we placed such value on Neve’s life when hardly anyone batted an eyelid at the 13,285 unborn babies who were aborted last year?

What sort of strange lottery determines that one baby becomes a source of national celebration while others are sucked from the womb and consigned to a hospital incinerator?

The Big Lie, which you can expect to hear repeated endlessly, is that abortion is a health issue. This is now a feminist article of faith. But no amount of repeating makes it true, because pregnancy and childbirth are not illnesses or disorders, and it’s impossible to imagine anything less healthy for the unborn child than to have its life terminated.

Journalist Alison Mau gave an early example of the fatuous arguments likely to be deployed when, in a one-sided panel discussion on Radio New Zealand, she proposed that men should be required to get permission from certifying consultants before getting prostate checks, as women seeking an abortion have to do.

This reduced the whole issue to a puerile game of gender tit-for-tat. It got her a cheap laugh, but the nature and purpose of the two procedures are fundamentally different. Prostate checks are about identifying and treating a potentially fatal disease. Their purpose is to save life.

But pregnancy is not a disease, a foetus is not a tumour, and the consequence of an abortion is that life is extinguished, not saved. If a high-profile journalist like Mau can’t grasp that crucial difference, we’re in bigger trouble than I thought.

He is right, in that it doesn’t make sense. Liberals seem to be able to turn off half their brain to forget about an argument that conflicts with what they are saying at the present time.

  So after women get free cervical screening, breast screening, a dedicated women’s hospital, 94% of research funding, and a Ministry for Women to keep an eye on and advocate.
  
  What do men get?
  No pregnancy opt out rights.
  No screening programmes.
  Nobody giving a shit about them.
  
  And yes, at their own cost the enevitability of having to pay a doctor for assessment and treatment. As the public system delays causes desperate men to go private. Women get statisticaly ineffective options like $100,000 Hercepton as a bonus.
  
  The fact Mau used her analogy shows how deluded about men’s experience this woman is.
  
  Women are entitled to 10 hours of free counselling to decide on an abortion. Boys forced into a pregnancy wanting the child terminated, or wanting the child born but it’s being terminated are entitled to…..nothing to help with mental health harm.
  
  There you go Alison, an actual human rights violation. (Services of the crown, same situation, no effort, gender)

  The desire to increase rents increases?
  
  That desire may or may not result in an increase.
  The reason is that if renters are already stretched to unaffordable , going to the point they become homeless may result. It’s already reality.
  The extreme is that nobody can afford rent and everybody becomes homeless. The landlord then finds the house is not viable as an investment.
  
  The landlord sells up in a declining market and eventually the working poor can afford to buy homes again. Landlord not required.
  
  Maybe you should invest in an American style trailer park. You could have 100 people on the same block of land as a house. Bingo, landlord on steroids. No letting fees required.

    Correct. Real costs don’t go away.
    
    However if the purchaser of your product cannot pay more that cost results in lower profits to the seller.
    
    Profit is not a compulsory right.
    
    So yes it gets rolled into rents. But that is no garuantee that rents will increase. The increase to cover the letting fees may result in a lost tenant. It may result in the house being empty for a week or two while a renter able to pay the extortionary rent is found. Costing more than what’s attempted to be recovered.

      A lot of the pressure could be taken off the lower end of the market by allowing supply of accommodation at a level the prospective tenants warrant.

        A better question is why are rents so high as a proportion of prospective renters’ incomes. A few points as I see it……add your own:
        
        1) Supply & demand. Eg allowing nohopers with no money who wouldn’t work in an iron lung to immigrate knowing full well that they’ll drive up competition for rentals.
        
        2) Never ending greed by local bodies wringing the last few dollars out of prospective builders through extortionate consent & permit fees.
        
        3) Ridiculously high standards of building construction & fitout being imposed.

I see that Sir Thomas Eichelbaum has died. He was a good judge and a good man. He came to this country as a child as a refugee fleeing from the persecution of Jews in Nazi Germany and went on to become Chief Justice. Food for thought for some on this blog.

  I don’t see it like that. There was and still is a widespread consensus that the automatic 50 50 split was not working satisfactorily and that a fresh approach was called for through the Law commision and other interested organisations and parties on a largely non-partisan political basis.

R M, my elderly neighbour went through a breakup with his partner of 5 years ,she managed to prove to the judge she had been living with him the entire time and this was what cost him a big payout and has left him virtually pennyless in his 80s,
In fact she never lived with him and had her own place the entire time , a disgusting miscarriage of justice that ruined him and she is still living the high life with another old guy……..
