  wiseowl, I agree wholeheartedly re the UN and fail to see a single ‘accomplishment’ it can claim for all the resources that have been thrown its way.
  It, for example, is entirely toothless when it comes to preventing conflicts.
  Mr Trump, of whom I am not the GREATEST of fans, would do well to act on his threat to withdraw from the outfit.
  A more useless entity would be hard to find.
  
  The EU, though, had promise. As a free trading block, I mean. It started on its present slippery slope with the common currency, common judicial system, common Parliament…

    The EU was sold to people, years ago, as stronger together and the formula was presented as a US style of govt.
    EXCEPT France and Germany started to dominate.
    Britain NEEDS out:
    There is an 80 billion pound trade deficit with the EU
    They pay into the running of the EU (Germany is the only other country with a net payment into the organization)

      RW, the League of Nations couldn’t even stop World War II.
      
      The UN would have been just as useless in preventing World War III if the likely combatants hadn’t realised that there would be NO winners in such a war.
      
      How has the UN gone in preventing Second Division (i.e. non-nuclear) wars since 1945?
      
      What wars are going on right now where anything the UN has done has had any tangible influence?

    The EU is the free trading block that sits behind a massive wall of tariffs. There have been many complaints that its common agricultural policy impoverishes African farmers. The annoying aspect of this is the harping from self defined progressives liberals that the EU is some kind of beautiful creation.

      The EU nearly beggared New Zealand in the 80s. Not only were we excluded from their markets but the EU dumped their surpluses on new markets elsewhere which we were trying to develop as alternatives to Britain. The EU is no friend of New Zealand and we should not get entangled with them.

I saw those wooden projectiles stored behind Goff and wished someone would shove that multi pronged one on the right of the screen, directly up his arse.

    Yet again, another well thought through Twitford schme, not!
    
    The plan is to have a central agency that can over rule the Akl Uniyary plan and the RMA to build Phil’s houses.
    
    Problem is even with the current structure we get stupidity in places like Millwater & the HBC where council planning & oversight failed to ensure even basic infrastructure was in place before development occurred, like a contacted sewerage/waste water system. Imagine, spending $1.5mill for property & house development in Millwater and you are required to have a septic tank settlement system on your property!
    
    .. .and we are meant to believe Twitford’s bright idea will deliver an uber authority that will deliver more houses faster.

I was both shocked and disturbed over the weekend to hear that the Judge hearing Cam Slater’s latest defamation case, is one *Mathew Palmer*……son of ex Labor Prime Minister, Sir Geoffery Palmer.

I thought judges were supposed to be ‘impartial’ …..or am I missing something?

Taiwan has just had an election.
No coverage in our media but they had ten referenda questions.
One was on same sex marriage.It was rejected.
Good on Taiwan for giving people the choice not politicians.

      And have you stopped to consider that the crimes the clergy have committed are largely homosexual in nature and coincided with the “summer of love” and the freeing up of social sexual mores? Crimes that go against what the Church and Bible actually teach – that go against what most “God botherers” actually believe?
      
      If society (and some bad eggs in the clergy) had kept to what the Church actually teaches then we largely wouldn’t have AIDS, or as high an incidence of divorce, broken families, abortion, adultery and cheating spouses – at least as not as much as we do now. In all likelihood we also wouldn’t have men pretending they are woman and all the other common perversions of today.
      
      All this can be traced back to the liberal need for sex without consequence or responsibility. Sex untethered from family.

        I don’t see so how you can know that. Such stuff may have been going on for centuries for all we know. Some Popes, for example, weren’t past a few extracurricilar activities. What has also changed is that in the last 50 years people are less afraid to hold the church to account.
        
        Likewise, adultry and cheating spouses are hardly a new thing. Prostitution was rife in Victorian England, for example. History is full of “mistresses” and suchlike – Jefferson, Nelson, and Wagner to quickly take three from diverse fields – and the British nobility don’t have a reputation for keeping it in their pants historically.
        
        Maybe you’re right and there is more now – granted, but also people are just a lot more open about it.

      While I think this country and western civilisation comes from Christianity. Christianity puts a high value on human life, we are created in the image of God. Therefore practices like infanticide and the killing of old people and the burning of widows and indeed the practice of slavery were stopped as nations became more Christian.
      
      As many in our nation abandon Christianity we are seeing a return of pre-Christian Pagan practices such as abortion and the push for euthanasia. And of course sodomy is now compulsory. It is not compulsory that you practice it but it is compulsory that you wholeheartedly approve of it.
      
      I think our society is going downhill and the rise of suicide and mental health problems has been caused by the breakdown of the family which is being caused by the abandonment of Christian morals, otherwise known as family values.
      
      When even the All Blacks are wearing rainbow coloured laces in a test match to show their support for a homosexual man and by extension homosexuality, you know that things have got very queer in this nation indeed!

I can however point you to many, many deranged and downright evil religious people though. Certainly international evidence demonstrates the more religious a society is the worse it is for its citizenry.

  Anne Brady was talking on TV recently and it sounded like she was saying the National Party has received $4 million from Chinese sources and the Labour Party hasn’t received a cent. I thought if i heard her right then that isn’t right. The US Government has recently discussed the Labour Party receiving funding from China. Looking up Labour Party funders there is even a significant donation from a person with a Chinese surname.

        Where I work we don’t like dealing with Russian companies. Big credit risks, play very sharp with regulations to generate what are in our view false claims for damages and the like. The bureaucracy is also very hard to deal with if you do encounter problems – genuine or not.
        
        So we tend only to deal with Russian firms if the deal is really good or we can’t sell elsewhere.

    While I totally agree with all the critical comments upthread about the pernicious and dictatorial nature of the CCP’s Social Credit system, I have to agree with their laudable response to the Uighurs and their Muslim terrorist actions.
    
    The correct reaction to being stabbed en mass , shot at and terrorised by bomb threats is to subdue the agitators and their supporters in camps where they will be ‘re-educated’ out of their stupid behaviours.
    
    Think about it. How many Uighurs will now want to press for separatism and how many will attack innocent people knowing that huge numbers of troublemakers and activists in their population are likely to be interned as a result?
    
    This is exactly the kind of response the West should have initiated when the Muslims started agitating in our countries and carrying out acts of terrorism. Sadly though, that horse has well and truly bolted in the West…. but its not to late for China.
    
    As for your claim that Christians will be next – I don’t think so, frankly. Unless the Christians were to start agitating for a separate state or special rights etc by terrorising the people, in which case they would deserve to be crushed…. but I don’t think that’s a likely scenario.

    Well they had freezing temps in most Aussie States last week and several inches snow in ether NSW or Vic . place called Spring Falls or similar….Record low Temps throughout the States and Canada usually 3-4c below old records setin the 1870s.   Unfortunately for them the Great Depression sunk their hopes of forming a government until after WWII. Since then they have pretty much dominated power.

Today is my Dad’s birthday and I was looking through some old photos to put on FB for the family to remember his by.
During WWII he was a gunner in the artillery stationed in Egypt with the NZ army for a period of time. I have a photo of him sitting at the wheel of a truck which was probably used to tow a twenty five pounder around.
It occurred to me that these days blokes like him are able to sit in the equivalent vehicles towing boats around . . . . .
Not long afterwards he was sent over to Greece with his mates by Churchill where they were hoovered up by the Germans and spent the rest of the war as POWs.

    I remember asking my father about why young guys went off to war and I don’t know that patriotism was a top priority for a lot of them. It was the adventure and they didn’t want to be left behind.

    Don’t know how many were sent back to the Caucasus.

I was driving, so couldn’t take a photo of it, but in South Auckland, prominently displayed along the motorway is a billboard of a crudely painted Jacinda Arden on a red background with a yellow hammer & sickle above her with a slogan “Let’s Do Tax This” also written in yellow. I’ll have to have my phone out the next time I drive past it (unless someone else can do it driving by) 🙂

He said National would repeal the Auckland Regional Fuel Tax, and promise no nation-wide petrol tax increases in its first term.

“We will not introduce any new taxes during our first term,” he added.

“I believe Kiwis pay too much tax already. So today, I am making a commitment to you – if the Government legislates a Capital Gains Tax, like the Tax Working Group has signalled it will recommend, before the next election, then we will get rid of it.”

He said National would also increase funding for core public services, noting the Social Investment Approach that the Government has axed.

WA Police allege an argument over the wrong pub meal being sent to a table escalated into a fight in which guns were fired. The altercation started at a pub in the small farming community of Gibson near Esperance on Western Australia’s south coast on Friday night. Sergeant Todd Pender alleges two groups fired up after the kitchen mishap. “There were more arguments, which then ended up on social media that were basically, ‘Let’s meet at a pre-determined spot and we can sort this out’,” Sergeant Pender said.

Wouldn’t the food go cold while they “sort this out”?

    Do you rural folk have a similar dispute resolution method for resolving misdirected mail issues? The thought of having to trudge 5km down the road to give a letter to the person who was supposed to receive it might cause someone to “go postal” (if you know what I mean)?

      Can’t remember any feuds over misdirected mail Nostra though that may be testimony to the efficiency of our RD1 driver.
      
      The worst flare ups are usually the result of poor boundary fencing though there’s been some humdingers when pig hunters poach on private hunting blocks.
      
      One of note involved a poacher about a kilometre up a stream surrounded by regenerating scrub when a shot rang out & his dog dropped dead at his feet. There was hell to pay over that!

        In the movie The Patriot, there is a scene where Mel Gibson’s character is teaching a couple young boys how to shoot. He famously says “Aim small, miss small.” If you focus your aim on a small part of your target, you have a better chance of hitting it.

        As I recall about 700 metres range from up on a ridge Swifty. Thing was that the bloke who shot the dog was another hunter who had permission to be on the property.
        
        He didn’t tell anyone what had happened & the poacher departed at great speed to complain to the police. The property owner, who was still out of the loop was visited that arvo by half a dozen cops who confiscated his firearms.
        
        There were some unhappy people & a few punch ups as a result.

  I lived there for a few years – most preferred their Commonwealth friends to the EU or EEC which is what it was back then. People weren’t told that their old friends would be kicked in the groin.
