      That rubbish about the Hutt Valley was just that. The valley was a swamp when the europeans arrived. Maori only lived on a small section of the valley as it was not a place to walk about. The 1856 earthquake raised the valley floor allowing most of it to be habitable once drains were dug. The next earthquake will raise it even more. Most of the flooding prior to the 70’s was because all the trees were cut from the hills and water just runs off into the river.

  Yesterday I watched the first 30 minutes of Parliamentary Question Time. PM Ardern’s personal attitude and demeanour suggested more than once that she feels it ‘beneath her’ to be questioned publicly on her Government’s actions and performance. And that she considers herself to be under siege unreasonably.
  
  From my personal perspective, many of Ardern’s QT answers are delivered with the PM adopting an undignified, defiant, sneering attitude. Then, invariably, she slumps back into her green-leather chair in a petulant gesture that seems to convey the expression: “So there”!
  
  There is no legal or practical requirement for Ardern to continue as Prime Minister. If it’s all too tiresome and demeaning for her to handle, despite its generous personal and financial rewards, she has the option at any time to stand down and lead a more ‘normal’ life. Nobody would deny her that option.

    That’s the thing with accidentally becoming Labour leader 6 weeks before the election, the public didn’t get to see her in action.
    
    I too have watched her in QT and listen to most of her Tues morning interviews on Radio NZ. Haughty, evasive, condescending, phony concern… that’s how I would describe her attitude.
    
    I’ve come to the conclusion that, aside from her misguided policies, personally she is a real bitch. Feel sorry for that kid having a mother like her.

        In my view, she prefers to feel actually offended.
        
        I have strong doubts about her recognising any “serious personality problem” on her own part. Personally, I consider that she suffers more from her inner insecurity at lacking serious political or leadership experience. Coupled with her ‘soft’ educational and academic credentials that are far from the “sharp” end of the tertiary spectrum.

      Watching the clip without the sound (to distract) is quite revealing, especially the flomp / flounce she makes after making each reply. That, accompanied by the facial expressions for which she is now notorious, is the real JA exposed.
      
      Definitely NOT nice and I’d hate to be her parliamentary staff…
      
      BTW: The downwards velocity with which she returns to the chair would indicate that perhaps said piece of furniture may have to be replaced sometime in the near future. The ‘impact’ stresses appear to be severe, especially when the ‘priNZess’ doesn’t get her own way…

        The tide is definitely turning. Reading comment sections on news posts it seems more and more are turning against her. I liked that someone referred to her as “Princess fluffy pants” . Seems apt…..she fluffs everything up. How long before she cracks? She is looking more and more haggard by the day. One day she will look back and question why she ever allowed this to happen, her daughter will grow up without her. Mind you, that is probably the best thing for the poor unfortunate child.

        ILG has rescinded his order: Sroubek cannot stay.
        The justification puts Taxcinda and Deputy Old Fella right in the firing line.
        ILG admits to not reading the file. Taxcinda supports his decision. Winston says he had read the file (I heard him) and agrees with decision.
        
        Taxcinda was not in the House this pm. Possibly could not face the urgent debate.

Hence the original mantra that Mark Lundy had his wife’s brain on his shirt.

Fast forward 16 years, and Mark Cooper writes

“[358] All of these matters must have been rejected by the jury as not raising a
reasonable doubt about Mr Lundy’s guilt. None of them are particularly cogent as an
indicator of another person being responsible for the crime. In our own view, they do
not raise a credible basis on which we could go behind the implications of
the CNS tissue and DNA found on Mr Lundy’s shirt.”

No longer brain but CNS tissue.

Now what are these matters that must have been rejected by the jury?
Only

“(a) There were a number of unidentified fingerprints at the scene as well
as an unidentified footprint.

(b) There was an absence of blood in Mr Lundy’s car, on his glasses and
ring and the motel unit where he stayed in Petone………. Mrs Leak also referred to the risk that a garment worn
over the polo shirt would have left fibres on the shirt.

(d) Scrapings taken from under the fingernails of both the deceased, after
being analysed in 2014, were shown to contain the DNA of unknown
males.
(e) A number of fibres were found under the fingernails of both deceased.
These were analysed and could not be attributed to Mr Lundy’s
polo shirt.”

And so on.

So in the decision we become the mind of the jury, a jury so moronic they would totally ignore the fact someone who was not Mark Lundy was at the crime scene, and that Mark Lundy himself was completely untainted by this bloodiest crime in New Zealand history. I hope this post passes muster on the forum because this is a crucial case for the New Zealand people. It is not alright to pluck innocent citizens from obscurity like the hydra, and cast them in jail for life.

      Did you read that post? Do you pay any heed to the crime scene in this tragedy, where Mark Lundy cannot be placed except with a forensic method that has never been used again in any court in the world. There was malpractice at multiple levels, how can this be described without naming the people?
      You are in denial, and trusting a judiciary who have been demonstrable failures multiple times in uncontroversial cases of exoneration such as Arthur Thomas, Teina Pora, Rex Haig, and George Gwaze. There you have multiple appeal courts who in their role as correctors have perpetuated shocking injustices. This is not complex it is simple mathematics. You have your head stuck in the sand along with your whole village.

        I try not to second guess the Courts as one not present to hear the evidence. There is a form of confirmation bias that can creep in where a “case is made” almost literally. I know it well from the inside. It’s easy in law enforcement to believe you are right so the evidence must provide a conviction. What’s the point in trying to put together a prosecution if you don’t believe the defendant is guilty? The evidence has go to stack up or be seen to be. Is a law enforcement officer corrupt if he truly believes that the defendant is guilty and he should make sure he shows that?
        
        I have not followed Lundy closely but the timing is concerning. Expert witnesses are not always that expert either. They can be selected for their agreeability.

        KevOB I have spent time, for better or worse running into the thousands of hours, yet distressingly the case is simple.
        Mark Lundy got into business with a guy who owed truckloads of money to other people. This guy gave him an invoice for 500 plus GST, and told his other creditors they would be paid in turn when this 500k invoice was paid by Mark. One of these creditors became impatient and sent a person straight to the lundy household, who went in when the lights went off at night. But Mark was in Petone, the screaming woke the kid, who came in and attacked him from behind, then the blows to Christine were struck. Mark had nothing to do with this, no ability to change events.

        There does seem to be a bit of intolerance. History justifies those who have championed cases where they are certain for whatever reason an injustice has been done. That’s better than another variety who would prefer all criminal big and small to be dealt with by a bullet and lynch mob. We are fortunate in having KB in its present form where very free expression is permitted. I’m sure the moderator and David will let us know if we are getting out of hand.
        
        I appreciate Notsofast’s concern and his doubts are marshaling me to take a fuller look. At present I go with the Courts but with an enthusiastic prosecution jury’s do not always get it right.

        I am not making assumptions at all. A crime scene offers clues to what happened, and in this case those clues point away from Mark Lundy and right at an unknown man wearing a particular garment. Why assume Lundy did it when the alleged forensic evidence is degraded, yields no dna or neurons, and he has an alibi that he was in Petone? The “experts” were all self deluded for their own reasons, unfortunately it is often as simple as money.

    Bitcoin is in a technical down trend and mining has stopped, That is a good thing for the planet apparently.

  What you are questioning is that if the cops believe the suspect is guilty then they can stitch the person up any way they want to.
  They can lie and cheat and make up stories that are unsupportable.
  
  What decent person supports the right of the cops to make up shit any old day of the week ‘coz it’s the right thing to do’ when detective work fails!
  Is it OK that in the A.A. Thomas conviction they planted evidence.
  So we have two juries – presented with lies- that convicted on each occasion.

  A youngish cop on Crewe murders learnt the corrupt ways already happening in NZ in the 1970s. His name is John Hughes. He is dead now, fortunately. He was a thug and a liar.
  The A.A. Thomas/Crewe murders had a false prison confession that the court threw out.
  It had planted evidence.

  …Three prison inmates testified against Tamihere at his trial. One of them, known as Secret Witness C, who has permanent name suppression, claimed that Tamihere confessed to him in prison that he’d beaten Urban Höglin over the head with a lump of wood and dumped the couple’s bodies at sea. He also claimed Tamihere told him he gave Hoglin’s watch to his son.[18] Höglin’s remains were eventually found near Whangamata on 10 October 1991 with his skull still intact and the watch still on his wrist…
  Read the story on Wikipedi or elsewhere. The misdirection and dishonesty by the cops was legendary.
  I would say it is way more plausible that Tamihere is guilty of that double murder than Lundy is of the ones pinned on him.
  
  There was much dishonesty by the cops there (Crewes and Swedish cpl) and Hughes was in the thick of it.
  Hughes got away with a lot of corruption even pretending to be (impersonating) a cop years after his retirement.
  But the cops look after their own and never go back. Stay inside the tent and you’ll be OK!
  We saw this with the Teina Pora case after a few years that Pora, whilst quite dodgy, was a few bricks short of a good wall and the cops would not, never ever, even if it was the right thing to do, back down on their lies.
  It would bring down their house of cards.
  There are too many examples.
  
  In the Case of the Lundy murders the NZ Police perjured themselves quite blatantly on the stand.
  In the first ‘trial’ they made up a story that was complete hocus pocus.
  Probably a 4 year would believe it.
  12 Adults should not.
  Here was a tall story of an impossible drive that Bruce McLaren could not do in peak hour traffic and no-one calling *555 which was new then and people though meant something even though it was bogus police smoke and mirrors.
  There was tall tales of a psychic who saw Lundy dressed as a woman.
  Read the story if you want ..a fantasy. Like Hansel and Gretel.
  The cops went witness shopping all the way to Texas to try to convict.
  But, after supposedly driving all the way to PN and ditching all clothing, weapons, and meticulous planning on petrol consumption Lundy placed the T shirt he was wearing in his car. Huh.
  What a dummy… or is it the people who believe this fantasy!
  
  The so called Trial number one was a complete NZ Cop fabrication.
  Christine in bed at 7pm, not watching Shortland St etc.
  KevOB floats the idea this is OK if the cops got the ‘feelz’ that he is the crook.
  Kind of like Cindy got the ‘feelz’ that Oil and Gas exploration is bad.
  Lundy was convicted on police perjury.
  An orchestrated litany of lies.

  How do you think Peter Ellis felt when the cops came after him and showed no mercy or decency and were hell bent on his destruction as a human being ?
  
  I think if a guy is likely to be an axe murderer it would show sooner than later.
  The Upper Hutt axe murderer from 2014 was a gangster and had form.
  It is easy enough to hate a spouse and the divorce rate testifies to that.
  But does a guy of 43 suddenly become an axe murderer- a double axe murderer- including his own daughter?
  Common sense for those who don’t live inside cloistered churches says a couple of things:-
  >>Even the worst type of scum who are right tearaways have mainly calmed down by their late 30s. We see it with Mongrel Mob types. Pure scum at 17 but taxpayer funded ‘social workers’ or maori wardens in their 40s.
  >> Guys don’t generally kill their own kids. There are lots of feral scum on NZ who have killed ‘other blokes sprogs’ but few of their own.
  
  So we are supposed to believe that a guy in his 40s suddenly becomes a double axe murderer to get an insurance payout or something and takes out his own innocent 7 year daughter in the process.
  That is really, really pushing it.
  He may have been a prick. I don’t know. I’m sure all of you know a prick or two.
  Does that make them an axe murderer?
  A Double axe murderer.
  An axe murderer who kills his own defenceless 7 year old daughter?
  
  I understand there was a TV show from a pop psychologist and all round wanker called Nigel Latter or something (never seen it, never would) on TNVZ where he suddenly becomes an expert and can analyse people ‘professionally’ that he has never met, and this Latter guy pronounces that Lundy is guilty.
  Because Latter says so.
  What genius.
  Why have courts and all this expensive trial stuff when we can get TVNZ to declare whether people are guilty or not?
  
  But everyone is an expert because they ‘saw Lundy crying at the funeral’ – probably on the wonderbar channel of honest news – TVNZ .
  
  And why an axe?
  An axe is hard to explain if you are caught.
  It is going to be extremely messy if you use an axe.
  Did Lundy park streets away and carry an axe there , and back etc. Quite a risk.
  Why not a large kitchen knife. It is multi use and if caught with it there are lots of excuses as to why you have it.
  You can buy a kitchen knife discretely for cash at Briscoes or a $2 shop.
  If you ditch it in a waterway well there will be lots of knives there lost while fishing etc.
  An axe. Much harder to explain.
  An axe is for intimidation. It is big. It is not discreet. So it does not work well as a concealed weapon especially for this alleged clandestine operation.
  An axe requires swingback and the target can move during that time. An axe is generally for a stationary items. A poor choice of weapon for such a ‘well planned event’.
  
  Anyhows. Long enough.
  There is massive doubt as to whether Lundy is the perpetrator.
  The so called trial number one was a complete fabrication.
  Why did the police lie?
  In reality they had no case and the whole litany was based on one weak thread hinged on witness-shopping literally halfway across the world.
  According to the cops Lundy planned this meticulously including covering phone calls, petrol consumption, timing of hooker, avoiding cameras and security, getting rid of evidence all except leaving the T shirt he was wearing in the back of his car. Duh?
  Did you hear the true story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs?
  Was so-called trial number two any more honest?
  
  Did Tamihere murder the Swedish backpackers? Entirely plausible.
  Did Mark Lundy axe murder his wife and 7 yo daughter. This is much less plausible.
  So KevOB in answer to your question:-

  I also think that the jury system is weak in that the jury have to sit there and be fed crapola all day long.

  This is now allowed in some jurisdictions. The weak court system in NZ has a lot to protect.

    Thanks for your considered response. My question arose out being involved in forensic investigations where a prosecution and other consequences were the outcomes. There was pressure to establish the desired result. It was not helpful to promotion to start a case that was not expected to be successful.

  Maori are tribal and had no written language. Their significant cultural events and histories are preserved in song, dance, carving, wall panels. Genealogies are preserved that way too.
  
  There are places in the Pacific where you can be imprisoned for giving genealogies without proper rank and authority. Property rights are tied up in these and oral transmission has to be kept authoritative. This is also true in NZ. What passes to Pakeha culture as an agreeable musical item may be much more to others.
  
  I am not for pushing “Maori Culture” on Pakeha but being watchful over not borrowing it where it may have real significance.

        Tatoos–another form of carving, sort of. Throughout the Pacific body art can carry a lot of meaning.
        I expect the Ta Moko of Nanaia Mahuta has ceremonial significance. The Samoan pe’a where a man is extensively tatooed on waist, thighs etc. carries information about title, rank and history.

  Groundskeeper Willie is a very topical example. Lately we’re hearing all about “the problem with Apu” (Indian Kwikimart owner from the Simpsons), about how the character is racist and terrible. There are rumours that the character may even be cut. But Willie clearly proves this argument is nonsense – just snowflakes wanting something to be offended about.
  
  Stereotypes and caricatures have been staples of comedy forever, and European groups are hardly immune. In addition to the already mentioned Willie, the Simpsons has a gunslinging Texas tycoon in a suit and ten-gallon hat. Several Roger Moore-era Bond movies had a cliched southern sheriff. The Tintin books had the extremely English Thompson and Thomson. The Crocodile Dundee files were built on Australian stereotypes… I could go on and on.
  
  The only reason the character of Apu should be considered offensive is if he was portrayed consistently negatively – as stupid, or mean, or violent, something like that. But he isn’t. The character is always portrayed as friendly, polite, and reasonably smart. Compared with the quirks and flaws some other Simpsons characters have, he’s an absolute paragon of excellence. Merely being a stereotype alone doesn’t qualify as racist or offensive.

  He didn’t just plan the attack, there has been suppression on what he actually did. Media reports at the time of the court case said a lot of people were left traumatised by what happened. I can only speculate that with no access to bombs he drove at a crowd of people, somehow stalled the car and was dragged from the car. We will never know as it was suppressed.

Venezuela: Is it all just socialist incompetence?

Venezuela has the highest oil reserves in the world. Just kick out the gringo oil companies and sell them oil. Turn up the music and we dance and party into the next century. What can go wrong?

All fine, except….

Oil is not all the same. Oil has different grades. At the one end is oil described as “sweet” and “light”. These are the oils mainly found in Arabia, the Brent area between UK and Norway, Central USA, Africa and Pacific. At the other end are the “sour” and heavy oils (Gulf of Mexico etc), and of course the tar sands of Canada.

The light oils are easy to deal with. They flow easily. They have high volatility so are easy to refine and produce a lot of the yummy stuff: petrol, diesel and jet fuel with less of the muck. That means they are easy (and cheap) to transport and easy (and cheap) to refine. Refinery productivity is high.

The heavy oils are much harder to work with. They have many contaminants. They are a pig to transport and refine. Refinery productivity is low (and expensive). Nobody wants that muck in their pretty refineries and cute tankers.

Sweet vs sour is to do with sulphur etc. Sour oils need more processing (expensive) to meet emissions regulations etc., thus making the sour oils less valuable.

The standard oil price benchmark is for Brent Crude. The top shelf stuff. No surprise that price is way higher than the price for heavy sour oils. When there is an abundance of sweet light oils, you struggle to sell the other muck at any price, let alone profitably.

Thus, if you want to have an industry based on heavy sour oils you can’t just sell the crude. You also need to run ships that are prepared to transport it and refineries that will process it, then sell the refined products. That needs heavy investment, brainpower and good management.

When the oil companies were still in Venezuela they provided that infrastructure: they ran the ships, they ran the refineries. All the things that are hard to find in a socialist country.

So boot out the gringo oil companies and maintenance falls behind, plants fail, ships sink and eventually the industry crumbles to nothing and the music ends.

Of course there’s more. Does Venezuela really have the biggest oil reserves in the world or is that just a socialist fantasy to back up borrowing? If you look at a graph of oil reserves, you can see that they were mostly “found” since 2000, after the commies had taken over oil and the gringo oil companies were kicked out. Are the commies really 4x as good at finding oil, or does this oil only exist on paper?

massive increases in ACC levies

new online company filing fees

a creeping expansion of the scope of Fringe Benefit Taxes;

“Netflix tax” on services, media or software purchased from an overseas online retailer.

  Labour put fuel taxes up about the same as National, BUT they have done it in ONE year not 9.
  My fuel price is actually up by 50% on last year, my business has to work an EXTRA week to get what I was getting last year, just because of fuel costs. No chance of hiring any one.

National did cut income taxes in a switch for GST. But yes they did increase some taxes (fuel, property amortization reduction).

    You may recall that in an election debate a few years back, Peter Dunne scored a huge hit by appealing to the simple idea of bringing “common sense” back into politics. I’ve never had much time for him, but he struck gold with that one.
    Perhaps National should push it too: there’s undoubtedly a groundswell of disaffection on the part of ordinary people, in the face of this increasingly inane stuff we’re getting from the unholy alliance of social misfits.

So, to hear Labour MP Louisa Wall use the word in a public (media excluded) meeting was enough to make me reach for my snake gators. She said, “My whole thing is I don’t want any f***ing TERFs at the Pride Parade.”

I can tell you, that as a lesbian who has never marched in a parade of any kind – I loathe the sound of brass – I now feel like turning up.

I mean, as I’m the ‘L’ in LGBTQIA+, I should be safe to do so, right? But what if Louisa Wall sees me? Will security turf me out? Will I be dragged down a dark alleyway and forced to watch endless reruns of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert?

This is the stupidity of the current Pride Parade debacle – a supposed “inclusionary” group which is excluding parts of its community for not subscribing to right-thought

Under the proposed new law, a man can call himself a woman without ever medically transitioning (most never do) and insert himself in female-only spaces such as changing rooms, women’s refuges, and prisons. Women would have absolutely no legal recourse to challenge such a move.

I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t want to be locked up alone in a cell all night with a hairy, muscly, sex-starved inmate of either gender – but particularly one with his full kit and caboodle intact.

Neither would I want my six-year-old niece to see a grown male stranger naked in the changing rooms at her local swimming centre. Why shouldn’t she be able to have a male-free space? And me too?

How about Laurel Hubbard competing straight-faced as a female in weightlifting? And all those other athletes around the world winning hands down against biological women? Is it fair to females, who’ve often trained their whole lives, only to come second to a biologically stronger athlete – no matter how they identify?

Exactly what many people here have said.

Parents, wanting to be best friends with their kids, are taking their son’s fixation with dolls as evidence that he’s really wanting to be female. In the UK alone, the number of kids being referred to the NHS’ gender-service unit has risen by 2,500 per cent over the past nine years.

As a kid I played with Tonka toys. Fortunately, my parents saw me as a tomboy, and indulged me by letting me drive the farm truck and tractor at a ridiculously young age. Thankfully, in the 1960s, the seeds of “gender confusion” had yet to be planted. (Not to mention health and safety).

It is well worth reading the entire opinion piece. It may well be the start of the Apocalypse, but I actually find myself in complete agreement with Rachel Stewart.

  Graham, in a bid to paint themselves as the majority the alphabet soup brigade have expanded their “inclusiveness” to include every known minority. This is so they can fight the oppressors. In doing this they have done 2 things:
  1. Made an oppressed minority out of the oppressors who are white; middle class, hetro, males; and
  2. Made their caravan of diverse oppressed minorities so diverse, that there are members with conflicting options about each group. So, of course tyou are now getting spats within their “community”. It can only end with the whole thing imploding, much as the parade is doing.
  
  Finally, my sympathies to you, agreeing with Rachael Stewart is not good for anyone’s health. Suggest you go and lie down for a while. Either that or the world as we know it has been turned on its head.

    And I’m one of these people who tries not to be absolute and say if someone is a lefty, or a Greenie, or whatever, then NO WAY ON GOD’S EARTH can I support them EVER. If Rachel Stewart says something I agree with then I can live with that.

  It’s amazing to think that potentially (and until confirmed otherwise) we have Chinese government spies operating with impunity in NZ (breaking into Professor Brady’s house and stealing her electronic devices), yet this COL Government is saying nothing (and appears to be doing nothing when Professor Brady has been asking for help as she is now afraid).
  
  It seems unless the spies are French, Israeli, or American (CIA/NSA etc), the gutless COL Government will turn a blind eye.
  
  It’s bad enough for NZ’ers that Jacinda is a weak and ineffectual leader/PM, but the trouble is potentially the Chinese Govt not only already know this, they are already exploiting it because they know they can “get away with it” …

      In the Nature/Nurture debate the results are in – sadly it’s mostly Nature. Parents can mess children up through abuse or lack of care, but research suggests that they can do almost nothing to improve their intelligence or motivation/conscientiousness beyond their mostly genetically determined baseline. Once they reach adulthood their smarts and conscientiousness will stabilise at whatever was dictated by their genes.

Facebook is of course the piece de resistance example but believe me there are hundreds of other smaller ones.

A member of the Young Nationals accused of inappropriately touching a teenage woman after the group’s Christmas function a week ago learned he was suspended by the party only after Newsroom broke the story yesterday of the police investigation.

National had claimed it followed all correct procedures following the incident. The victim had been led to believe the man had already been blacklisted from party events.

But earlier yesterday morning after Newsroom published details of the case, the man had received an email from National’s general manager Greg Hamilton telling him a complaint had been made to the police and the party was temporarily cancelling his membership and barring him from events.

There were a lot of foreigners on my flight who clearly couldn’t make head nor tail of it so just ignored it. IT IS A SAFETY BRIEFING, ffs. What use is it if it is ignored. AirNZ is rapidly falling off it’s perch as No 1 airline. They need to do a heap of work on some of their air crew too. It seems anyone will do nowdays. I’ve thought a lot about the Czech and his ‘problems’.
I’ve also thought about the timeline of his problems and how that timeline might intersect with the very strong rumours about the partner of a certain highly placed MP from earlier in the year.
I would be willing to wager that the original rumours were put about by somebody very close to the highly placed MP in the full knowledge that they were false and that eventually there would come a time when the person at the center of those rumours could be publicly exonerated by a very highly placed public servant and the highly placed MP. I also now believe that those earlier rumours were started with the full knowledge of the upcoming Czech drama.
When you think about it this is a masterstroke by those close to the MP. Now that the inevitable rumours have started again (this time based on fact) it enables the highly placed MP to claim that their partner is being victimised and also allows that highly placed MP to brush off any accusations as being another example of their partner being persecuted.

  This is surely a job requirement. If you can’t work with people (including ministerial staff, researchers, opposition, etc etc etc), then don’t apply for the job.
  
  If someone is on $200k+, you expect them to be vaguely competent and suited to their role.
  
  In no other job can you get away with lacking core skills. Try be a sparkie who doesn’t understand electricity; try be a baker who doesn’t know what bread is.
  
  But no worries, just turn up in the beehive and we’ll give you $200k+ to just sit there and keep a seat warm.

  Just add those on to the existing two-week “Members’ Induction Programme” – I’m sure NZ will still run for the extra four days.
  
  Mind you, may I also point out that as, apparently, the “Members’ Induction Programme” offers one to one sessions about Parliament – INCLUDING STAFFING – maybe you should query if any of your little gaggle of MPs actually bothered attending them?

    The Minister ILG gave a very full explanation today in an urgent debate following QT.
    He had now looked at the file. Additional information had come to light. While he is expecting possible review by an Immigration Appeal he is fully on board that he was deceived when making his initial decision.
    
    ILG strongly suggested that he decided almost by rote and doesn’t apply Ministerial discretion. He claims to have been very influenced by a trial judge who found that Sroubek was in danger on being returned to his former home. ILG blamed officials for his not having the information on which to decide.
    National roasted ILG by pointing out that he had completely ignored public safety, Sroubek’s convictions and the refusal of the Parole Board to release him.
    Winston’s defence was questioned alongside NZF’s demand to reduce immigration by 60,000.
    
    ILG judgment = zero.

Simon and the Nat’s have launched their “Families Matter” campaign…they want comments and ideas from people….Well the trolls on fb are out in full force so decided it not worthwhile to leave a comment…..so am going to leave my comments here in the hope that “someone” will read them….My daughter thru no fault of her own is a “solo mother”….she never wanted to be “that solo mother”…so has been employed since the bubba was six months old….steadily working her way up in hospitality….one of the lowest paid industries we have…..the last business she worked for never got off the ground ….so it was back to the job hunt…..she finally secured a position and was excited about starting work….even tho it was a step down from what she was doing (hospitality is in a bit of a slump in ChCh)….this position was secured thru the MSD….and was supposed to be a “flexi-pay” situation…..yesterday she received an email from the MSD to say the job was no longer a job…..the reason?….The MSD have made huge demands of a new and fledgling business….an hourly rate they cannot afford….and a demand that she be given a guaranteed 30 hours a week….which they cannot do….so no job…..My daughter is gutted….she just wants to work…She also informed me that the system is madness….she was working forty hours a week for $25.oo an hour….now since this lot have come in….the benefits have gone up etc….and all she has to do now is get a minimum dollar wage @ 20 hours a week with a benefit top up….works out the same as her 40 hour a week got her…..it may be the same in dollars….but it decreases confidence….gives no incentive whatsoever ….this is madness and needs fixing……when she first went to the MSD asking for work…..the work broker told her to stop looking for work….wtf…and he would get her a job…..we are still waiting….she has not taken this advice and applies for everything she can….but is now too experienced to get the minimum dollar job…….it seems to me that the MSD either do not want beneficiaries to work…..their expectations of hours and hourly rates are in fairyland….so I say to you Simon and your party…have a long hard look at the MSD and their policies….and bring something in that actually makes work attractive as opposed to the benefit….have a look at this flexi-pay system and how it works …..the business my daughter was going to work for are disappointed that they cannot take her….my daughter is disappointed and tearful….as all she wants is a job….it is not all about the money….it is about feeling good about oneself….helping oneself….setting an example for her son…..and on and on….I know this is a bit of a rant….but what this corrupt lot have done is a mess and is costing….and will create fourth and fifth generation beneficiaries…….written by a third generation righty…..

  Hospo work in NZ is tricky… lousy wages, long hours, but the work is there for a dependable worker. It just may not be in the obvious setting.
  Check that your daughter is using all the Hospo -job websites.
  Is she available for one-off catering jobs?
  Has she got her Licence Controller Qualification?
  
  My youngest found it a bit rough in the first year after finishing her chef quals… but she took part-time work in different places, made herself available for short-term contracts at places like Parliament, Government House, Film Production sites, and had soon built up a decent cv and picked up new skills, that all helped to score her first permanent job.

    …thank you for your comments….my daughter has been in the industry for 15 years….has the licensing etc….she is a front of house manager/supervisor with event co-ordination experience….at the present time these positions are few & far between….with rigorous competition….her son has just started school…..we as grandparents have supported her in her ambition to further her career by being the little guys second home….which has worked well for the past four and a half years…as you know hospitality is a tricky trade….my daughter has done it all from the kitchen to coffee cart….fine dining to buffet service….in this industry you just have to do it all…as you and your daughter probably already know all to well…..thanks again Maggy for your comments and tips…

    Maggy, Madame, Most recently qualified Hospo workers have no useable skills whatsoever.
    
    The only way forward is to take work wherever you can at whatever pay is available and build experience.
    
    No pollie can fix this, only experience and hard work.
    
    I realise things have changed slightly but I took myself from unpaid kitchen hand to tourist hotel assistant manager (after the age of 40) by doing this – and I doubt things have changed that much.

      I think it is hard in NZ for a specialist hospo- worker, but now my daughter is in a big city overseas and can walk straight out of one job into another and collect a salary well in XS of anything she could earn in NZ.
      But it’s still long hours working in top restaurants…. so every now & again she takes a break and works casual/short-term contracts.

      but, my goodness, what a difference good chefs and front-of-house/waiting staff make to any establishment.

The merger deal of Fairfax Media and Nine Entertainment Company passed its final Australian regulatory step yesterday. Fairfax, which owns Stuff, will own 48.9 per cent of the merged company.

The Age, of Melbourne, suggests there will be redundancies “within weeks” in some divisions of the newly merged group.

  I recall that about 15 years ago, as a road safety ‘expert’, he used to drive a 1957 Morris Oxford to which he had fitted an aftermarket driver’s airbag.
  His logic was that even though he could afford one, he wouldn’t drive a modern car because they were ‘unsafe’ as they had progressive crushability built into the structure rather than being built like an unyielding block of concrete.
  Yes, he’s a bullshit artist but quite an articulate one and that’s all that Fairfax and TV news require.

Woman tells Auckland Council her dog identifies as a cat in bid to avoid registration fees

An Auckland woman’s hilarious message to the Council has gone viral on Facebook.

Jade Schutte was fed up with high registration fees, and the possibility of a by-law being passed to ban dogs on beaches between10am and 7pm was the final straw.

So she took matters into her own hands. In a message to the Auckland Council she screen-shotted and posted to Facebook, Ms Schutte said her dog Lettie now identifies as a cat, so she won’t be paying the registration fees.

It’s about time we held a ‘[x] identifies as [y] in order to [z]’ competition.

I see the fake news outlet Stuff has launched a new propaganda campaign today promoting climate hysteria.

Usually they do this ahead of government taking either more of our money, or rights. It is an attempt to sell an unpopular govt policy to the sheeple.

He lives in a vast paddock full of grass, buttercups, has access to a water bore and is hand fed veggies and pellets.

I wouldn’t think a paddock of buttercups would be very good for any stock.

  Buttercup is toxic Maggy but in my own humble experience I’ve never known stock to eat it. In any case it’s usually only a problem in poorly drained paddocks & can be sprayed effectively with ‘Preside’

      You’re linking to an article written by wankers about lifestyle farmers Maggy. I could write books about people who buy a few acres & do it “their way” because they know deep in their widdle hearts that farmers haven’t a clue. A few points:
      
      1) Grass dies out & weeds proliferate especially on drought prone paddocks that are overgrazed.
      
      2) Seven years is about max before the land needs resown.
      
      3) Mention soil tests to lifestylers & you’ll get the same response as if you suggested inter planetary space travel on carpets. They have zero concept that you have to put nutrients into the soil if you wish to take them out.
      
      4) PH is a bridge too far for their comprehension. (Buttercup likes poorly drained acid soil).
      
      There are exceptions but most are knowalls who know nothing & avoid all possibilities to improve on their limited knowledge.

        The in-laws took over a lifestyler outside of Ashhurst, but within 1 year, the farming adventure was over. and they rented out their paddocks thereafter.
        
        We originally came up to Gizzy to look over a lifestyler… which looked attractive on paper… but apart from being too far out in the wops, it was going to be beyond our skill sets to keep it ship-shape.
        
        Our compromise on the edge of civilization has turned out to be rather perfect for a couple of lazy slobs.

  Michael Barnett, long-time Auckland Chamber of Commerce head honcho and Santa Claus sacker, was the person that came to mind and that was because Barnett’s been in the headlines and has led that chamber for quarter of a century.
  
  Are the NZ Chambers of Commerce, with dairy farmers, pushing for more immigration for similar reasons Bannon suggests is the case in America – to keep wages low?

Always was a nasty bastard.
His record stands as such.
From bullying women to rugby bosses (remember he was going to bully the world rugby guy) to following the Netball Silver Ferns around and making himself a nuisance after games looking for entertainment. ( It was a talked about thing.)
Of course his other bad trait was to use others like Preeble to vilify Rankin, all because he was so gutless he didn’t have the decency to say to her, we would like you to leave what will it take. Instead he behaved like the piece of shit he is and behaved appallingly. Calls himself a man.
Perhaps he might man up and quit and admit that his behavior was so bad. I don’t imagine he has the courage.
The of course it wasn’t just directed at women, he decided he was a hero and attacked physically Tau Henare, which of course was a disgrace but also a symptom of his small man syndrome.

It seems though that another inquiry and lots of taxpayers money is going to be spent to cover this arsehole in glory.
But he is not alone.
