There have been a spate of identity reclassifications recently, including the 69 year old man who identifies as 49, and the woman who claims her dog identifies as a cat.

While all intelligent people (and perhaps even stephie) know this will lead to societal chaos, and it must be stopped, that doesn’t prevent us having some fun in the meantime. So I invite anyone to share a fantasy re-classifications in the general form:

I am a [truth], but I identify as a [fantasy] so that [personally advantageous outcome]

For example, “I am a 47 year old, 100kg male weightlifter, but I identify as a 18 year old female wrestler so that I can win the next world champs”

They know the criminal will not squawk while he still has appeal opportunities – these will take years to resolve, so the triumvirate of Ardern, Peters, and “nothing to see here” Commissioner Bush are safe until after the 2020 election.       1) It will just expose the next moron who takes his slot, showing that they have depth when it comes to incompetence.
      2) The case is not over. As Sroubek goes through the court processes which will take years, it will continue to refresh ILG’s “image” in the media.

        ILG made an interesting comment to Mark Mitchell in the house yesterday. He was denying that anyone had put political pressure on him and that he had also heard the rumours.

        If there is actual corruption it will out. Someone who did not get their fair share will rat.
        
        Meanwhile I am inclined to accept ILG’s personal admission yesterday. That revealed absolutely awful judgment by someone with authoritative Ministerial discretion. AI would have done better.
        The PM and Dickerty did no better. They suspended judgment too about the quality of the decision.
        
        Peters may have stretched truth by claiming to have previously read the file which ILG says he personally has only now gotten around to doing that.

  Lees-Galloway said Sroubek claimed that he was in danger if he was deported back to the Czech Republic. He had put weight on Judge Roy Wade, who dismissed Sroubek’s conviction on the basis that Sroubek was in danger if he were deported.
  
  He? Who exactly ‘put weight’ on a judge, and is this acceptable?

    Poor wording. Seems that ILG when making his decision ‘put weight’ on the judge’s decision and reasoning. Hopefully ILG would have not been so daft as to try and pressure a judge. That would be totally unacceptable and would cause a constitutional issue. A judge would presumably respond to such pressure by ignoring the pressure but stating that pressure had been attempted when giving a judgment or ruling.

        I have no reason to believe that NZ judges are not totally independent. Ok they may make some daft or misguided decisions but that does not mean they are not independent.
        There was an orchestrated attack by a journo and on Whaleoil some years ago against a retired District Judge (now deceased) who chaired a couple of tribunals (a quite normal retirement job for retired judges). This was partly to try and derail decisions that some people did not like. At no point was the judge’s independence under any serious attack.

        It went on for quite a long time and I weighed in with some pretty lengthy postings, such as rebutting the suggestion made more than once that he was improperly appointed because he did not have a lawyer’s practicing certificate. He handed in his certificate when appointed a judge and there was no need for a practicing certificate for the tribunal chair positions. He was also inappropriately accused of drinking too much because his speech was slurred – the poor guy was suffering from motor neurone disease and slurred speech is a symptom.

        I saw the whole of the scurrilous attack. I know the work of the Tribunal well and have appeared before a previous Judge.
        
        I am aware of who spoke to the judiciary staff officer who did not know what was going on.

    The “put weight” on wording could have been expressed more precisely, but in an administrative law context, it relates to weighing up different considerations when exercising a statutory decision-making power.
    
    The only person who seems to be “putting weight” on in Team Jacinda is Megan Woods. Ian Lees-Galloway is (for now at least) still skinny enough to hide behind a pillar to avoid journalists!

  For years, the Sroubek situation is going to hang around the Minister’s neck like an albatross. It will be mentioned in relation to every immigration decision he makes, and of course will erupt in the media time to time even after finally being resolved in around 2028.
  
  Since he is so keen on following the previous government’s processes, what’s the betting he delegates all decisions back to officials in line with the previous practice. Then officials can take the Sroubek and any other heat.

  Normally when they read the feedback comments, they will read a whole lot of leftie-positive comments, then one or two leftie-negative comments for “balance”.
  
  Well last night it was just a string of negative comments. Harsh by their standards.

  PM Ardern herself has said that she would not accept ILG’s resignation if it was proffered. It seems that both of them have been more focused on the protection and welfare of a drug-dealing foreigner (who entered this country using fraudulent means) than they are in the interests of New Zealand and its ongoing fight against the illegal drug trade.

    Forget the RNZ mess, Curran’s biggest mess was setting up Handley’s job because PriNZess asked. It was all going well until Curran went, the next minster took over and reversed the Handly appointment – bringing the whole mess of PriNZess’ involvement to light. While Curran was still minister the wraps stayed on.
    
    It could be the same plays out here. With ILG in office, the true story behind the story stays hidden. If ILG goes then another, less trusted, minister takes up the portfolio and gets involved. Then what is going to spill out?
    
    Nope. PriNZess will want ILG in place for as long as possible. He’s her heat shield in this mess.

    Remember Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister. When a Minister throws the Departments under bus the Department will eventually reciprocate. They know where the bodies are buried and at the right time will dig them up.
    
    ILG is toast. At some point very damaging info on this case will be leaked and the real reason exposed.
    
    It could be enough to bring the COL down.

  ILG’s statement’s yesterday were somewhat confusing – he outlined to reporters that he read the 12 page summary and had an official from Immigration point out and discuss important aspects (pages/sections) of the report with himself …… yet ILG then doesn’t take ownership of his poor decision making (how hard can it be when he has an Immigration official with him helping him explain why Sroubek is a bad character?) and then to take matters worse, he still blames officials for not providing him with the correct advice and now is going to waste further taxpayer money to have yet another top official review the Immigration official’s process – this is unbelievable and does ILG’s credibility no good (and he is one of Labour’s “better” Minister’s)!

      There is one aspect where I may have sympathy.
      Did the Departmental report have a recommendation and a few key facts in the Executive Summary? If so then the ‘I did not read it’ excuse would not wash. However if the Minister was sitting in the back of a CR limo with a box file full of papers to deal with by the following day (AFAIK a quite normal situation) and thought at a glance residency was OK, I would have some sympathy for him. In that case officials deserve a kick in the backside for not producing a clear concise paper with an executive summary.

  ILG’s explanation in the house yesterday showed a peculiar legalistic way of thinking. He said he felt almost bound by a previous trial judge finding that Sroubek was in danger if he was returned. That arose during sentencing. The probable “read between the lines”?
  That excuses ILG from consideration of likely corruption on his part. It does not excuse the appalling lack of judgement. Which takes precedence the safety of NZ or Sroubek? Is the UN that persuasive?

The CO2 game for young and old

Gather around folks. Let’s play a game. This is fun and instructive. But first, the boring bit…

Humans, even people with an engineering and science background like myself, really are bad at processing big numbers. This game is intended to scale things down and bring things into context.

When the climate folks speak of gigatons of CO2, that sounds very scary. No wonder we have kids, and even some adults, freaking out we’re all going to burn to a crisp in the next ten years. This game is designed to alleviate some of the anxiety.

The atmosphere is HUGE too. What does gigatons of CO2 really mean?

All the calculations used here were done by a real scientist who even wore a white lab coat!

Enough blaah, blaah, blaah. The fun starts…

First find yourself a few things. These are what I used, but substitute things roughly the same size:
* Tiny thing: Get a grain of rice and cut it in half.
* Two small things: I used a pingpong ball and a box of matches.
*Medium thing: Something about the size of two egg boxes or a pre-internet Yellow pages. I used a big dictionary (one with complicated words like “trivial”).
* Big thing: Something about 20-25 litres. A big bucket or a big couch cushion. I used a big cushion.

Now take them too your lounge. The cushion is already there. Handy eh?

Now put on your imagination hat. The whole atmosphere in the whole world has been scaled down to fit into your lounge by an Evil Scientist called CMM. You can blink the lights a few times for effect if that helps.

If the room is the size of the atmosphere, guess what’s the size of all the CO2 in the atmosphere? Is it the size of the couch or the size of the grain of rice? It is actually the size of the big cushion. Not much compared to all the size of the room is it?

Now guess the size it would be if everyone in the world got together in a big group? Would it be bigger or smaller than the cushion? It is actually the size of the half grain of rice. We’re really really tiny! So much for taking over the whole planet!

Now guess the size of a pile of all the bacteria in the world? You know, all those things you can’t even see. Bigger or smaller than the gain of rice? They’re the size of the box of matches. There’s way more of them. Which do you think has more impact on the planet? Size-for-size, bacteria produce much more CO2 than people do. Which do you think has more influence on the world the people or the bacteria? Well duh! The bacteria of course!

Now guess the size of all the CO2 produced by burning fossil fuels in cars, factories, planes, power stations all all that for a whole year. All of it together! Is it bigger than the cushion or smaller than the grain of rice? It’s about the size of the pingpong ball. Put the pingpong ball on top of the cushion. The cushion (all the CO2 in the atmosphere) hasn’t really got any bigger has it? Well that’s what all the climate change people are freaking out about!

Now guess the size of the CO2 from the bacteria. Do you think it is bigger than the cushion or smaller? It is about the size of the dictionary. Compare that to the pingpong ball. Which makes more us or them? Which do you think has the most effect?

The cushion is all yummy plant food so the plants are eating it up. They eat lots, while us, and the bacteria, are putting food into the cushion, the plants are eating it making the cushion smaller. In fact the cushion really is so small that the plants can’t get enough food and are starving.

Now consider this: until the industrial revolution, we humans were not making the pingpong ball of CO2. We have only been making that pingpong ball for about 150 years, but the bacteria were making the dictionary of CO2 for hundreds of millions of years and the world was fine. Are we really supposed to believe that the pingpong ball makes all the difference?

All the CO2 from cars is only a small part of the pingpong ball. Say the size of a pea or a small grape for a year of using cars. Are we really supposed to believe that if everyone changed to electric cars (which still make CO2), that a pea will change the whole picture? Put a pea on the cushion and consider.

Have fun discussing!

Bonus Game: Get another dictionary size thing (or reuse the same one). Remember PriNZess’ flight to Nauru? If everyone made a trip like that, then that is the amount of CO2 that would be produced by just doing that one trip. Does that square with her concern for CO2 levels? Why is she saying the pea (petrol cars) is so bad but the dictionary (her flying around) is fine?

  If you separated the gases of the atmosphere and layered them at constant sea level densities Nitrogen would be a layer 7.8km thick, Oxygen 2.1km, Argon 100m, Steam 5m and CO2 4m. 100 years ago it was about 3m thick.

    If you scale it to 1 metre, that’s easier to grasp:
    Nitrogen = 78cm
    Oxygen = 21 cm
    Argon = 1mm
    Steam and CO2 etc = thickness of cling film

Even Soper is turning on the CoL. His piece in the Horrid is even taking a swipe at Peter’s, as well as putting the boot into ILG.

I read the Stanit last night. Other than Trotter and one other, their lines of defence were:
1. Attack National for being nasty about the dud Czech;
2. It was all MBIE/Joyce/Coleman’s fault.

However, Trotter and 1 other summer it up well – ILG failed to engage brain, because he hasn’t got a brain.

One other point I noted from the Stanit, is that some of Tribal Labour also believe like we do, that the SLG & Peters know more about this decision than they are telling. Like us, they point to the SLG’s comment of “you’ll have to read between the lines” that they are hiding something.

In my opinion, whatever it is, goes way back before the current CoL & goes back to the days of the Clark govt. It must be something big, but I doubt whether the Czech’s lawyers can do anything with it, other than blackmail people. I doubt it is something than can be argued in public, else we would have learned of it already.

Lees-Galloway has misled Parliament and the public. A few weeks ago he claimed not to know that Karel Sroubek was wanted by Czech Republic authorities.

Craig McCulloch from Radio NZ has exposed Lees-Galloway’s untruth. He has published a document released to him under the OIA; the summary information that was supplied to Lees-Galloway by Immigration New Zealand. Check out the paragraph highlighted in green:

It clearly shows that the Minister was advised by INZ that Sroubek was wanted, to serve a 54 month jail sentence for two violent attacks, the first on two police officers, and the second on a taxi driver.

So, either ILG deliberately misled the House, the public and the PM, or his “careful consideration” of Sroubek’s case was not careful enough. Whichever, it is not good enough. He needs to resign or be sacked.

From the Society Pages: Hanging out in Hangzhou last week was our very own Peter Goodfellow, President of the National Party. Things were buzzing in Zhejiang Province as the local Communist Party of China showcased the region’s spectacular development. Next it is the decision of the ex Bible Basher David Clark ,know as the Minister of Health to keep secret the latest results of the inquiry on Mental Health in NZ not to be released until the end of the year. Whatever for, whats he hiding.
Also another kicker or who is in charge when so called Ministers fugh up. Yesterday when Lees-Galloway was giving out mea culpas on his stupid mad dog decision to keep a convicted overseas Gangster in NZ . Where was the Peters selected PM the small town twerp Commie Chic Comrade Ardern . Certainly not in Parliament. She was conveniently absent from supporting the low rent Lees-Galloway as well as being unavailable for Question time.
No photo opportunites in this instance,just embarrassment for her and the amateur pack of clowns that have been given the status of so called Ministers. For Peters most time never right. His stupid decision to make NZs Parliament in his image and liking has worked. What a fughing Legacy.

  In theory there are all sorts of back doors to get at traffic, but in reality this is not as bad as it sounds:
  
  A) Any important traffic is fully encrypted (eg. https traffic or VPN traffic). Man in the middle snooping doesn’t give you any real advantage.
  
  B) Outfits like Spark run continuous network analysis. If a Huawei router etc was snooping, it would have to send that data out via the network. Snooped data is likely to be detected by this monitoring.
  
  About the only big thing I would worry about things built in so that the devices could maybe be used to DDOS or shut down comms at the behest of the Chinese.
  
  Disclaimer: Huawei have been a customer of mine in the past.

1. CGT will have the opposite effect desired. People will buy larger, posher homes instead of buying a rental unit or apartment.

2. CTG will hit rural people hard: large sections and lifestyle blocks will be charged.

3. CGT will hurt separating couples leaving a lifestyle block or a home business and each get half of the money to start a new life.

4. CGT will stop single people moving in together (e.g. starting a second marriage): if each owns a home they can’t set up in one home and rent the other out, because the rental will be charged CGT.

5. CGT will hurt young people who have bought in other towns because Auckland and Wellington are too expensive, but are currently renting the houses out.

6. CGT will hurt traveling people who are currently renting the houses out.

7. CGT will hurt women trying to set up a small business from home after taking time off work for children.

8. CGT will hurt older people trying to set up a small business from home after leaving a larger business.

9. CGT will have exactly the wrong effect: it will *prevent* people from working at home.

I need a small painting job done on my house. Would do it myself but I’m a bit old to get up that high and am worried about working around power wires.
Dropped into Resene with the intention of asking them if they had any tradies who didn’t mind small jobs. Saw a tradie in there so asked him, and the reply was he couldn’t be bothered and he was booked up until April.
Went home and got on the internet. Found a very professional website belonging to a Vietnamese guy who responded straight away. He was here to do the quote as soon as the rain stopped and is doing the job the weekend after next, even though he is very busy. Yes, working at the weekend.
And we wonder why we need immigrants.

  Trades people have got New Zealanders by the short and curlies, personally I hope they bring in as many builders and sub trades as they can find and drive down the cost of building.
  
  The prices you have to pay to get any work done is bullshit, lucky I can do pretty much everything myself but I feel sorry for those less practical and have to take it up the arse if they need any work done.
  
  If I was Twyford I’d be looking at South Africa place is full of builders and other trades people desperate to get out.

    I don’t know how auckland rates but NOAA/IPCC has data showing Tornadoes and Hurricane frequency in the Atlantic has actually decreased over the last 70 years.
    They still get a big one from time to time but they always have since records began. I don’t think there’s any evidence they are more extreme.

Finance Minister Grant Robertson and Revenue Minister Stuart Nash wrote to the Tax Working Group chaired by Sir Michael Cullen last month, asking it to come up with a “revenue neutral” tax package that reduced inequality, as an option for tax reform.

For those against a capital gains tax (most kiwibloggers!)… many of you have been saying the government is not going to reduce income tax after introducing a CGT, but you are clearly wrong. Grant Robinson wants revenue neutrality.

So, there could eventually be quite substantial drops in income tax.

Of course, the devil is in the detail and they could still royally screw up big time… the danger is that they make the tax overly complex such that you need an accountant.

    Robin Hood? Income tax reductions benefit all income earners, including those on million dollar incomes. So, your point is lost on me a bit.
    
    The main losers will be those retired people who paid high taxes all their lives and own multiple properties and now face a CGT also. I agree this is not ideal as those people should not have to face a CGT in their old age.

  There never can be “revenue neutrality”. Revenue is the govts cash intake. Any CGT is likely to swap certain revenue for uncertain outcomes. You can’t dodge PAYE but you can object to many assessments. Getting the revenue then becomes problematical. There will need to be more govt borrowing to make up the shortfall. Higher interest costs.

  As I have told you before, revenue neutral is not the same as tax neutral.
  
  CGT will cost substantially more to implement and comply with than existing taxes, therefore the rates will either be higher, or the so called reductions will be stunted.
  
  Want an equitable tax, make PAYE flat rated, otherwise it continues to be an extremely unfair tax.

    However, they haven’t got the balls to implement it before 2020 even if they could, they will throw out large bribes to the “committed labour voters”…yes, more benefits, and try to claim a “mandate” to introduce it.
    
    I doubt the electorate will fall for it. In 2017, over 20% of eligible voters stayed away. My pick is that they weren’t fooled by the “lipstick” on the pig but couldn’t motivate themselves to vote for National.
    
    That 20% represents more than enough to wipe out the coalition and I strongly believe that we will see a tidal wave against the coalition.
    
    Remember, 25% prior to ardern the liar and a small jump of 12% with all the bribes offered plus the total lies about the state of the economy. 7% for the watermelons which will remain about the same unless a “true” green party appears.
    
    The leaves the shit bag winston with 7% of whom I would guarantee more than 50% wanted/expected a National NZ first coalition.
    
    Take the 3.5% back to National, which will happen, and it’s bye bye to ardern the liar and winston the utter mongrel.
