        pdm, I sucked during Maths at school (and did equations during Sex Ed. You can see why I struggled with later life, ha) but I calculate that with 24 runners there are 12,144 (24 x 23 x 22) possible 1-2-3 finishing permutations.
        
        Still better odds than Lotto!

The NZ Left is pushing hard for dentistry to be a mainstream part of the health system, with a lot more government subsidy for dentists.
Bryce Edwards had a big write-up yesterday and he’s backing the change.

Nowhere did a single Leftist ask why NZ dentistry is so expensive, or suggest we free up the supply of dentists and bring prices down.

I don’t expect this government to be brave enough to reform a professional occupation.

  Any idea how much it costs to set up a one chair dental practice? A 6 figure sum and the chair and equipment probably needs replacing each 10 years or so.

    If people cleaned their teeth properly every day, their dentist bills would be reduced significantly. A cheap toothbrush and a tube of toothpaste are not out of anyone’s financial reach. Dentists recommend it takes a full 2 minutes to properly clean your teeth. Feeding babies OJ or coke in their bottles and not taking time to clean their teeth is obviously bad parenting.

        I had one of those Oral B type electric brushes for a few years where the head goes round and round in circles. It’s OK, but I recommend a Sonic toothbrush that vibrates. I think I got mine from Farmers. I feel like it cleans so much better than the ones with the tips that go round.

      It’s nothing new.
      
      FWIW, a story in that regard which might interest:
      
      Many years ago, when newly married, I had occaision to visit a member of my bride’s family and her four year-old son; people I had never previously met. I was from a white middle class professional family, my wife, although Kiwi-born had come from one of the Pacific Island cultures, with a bit of Maori mixed-in for good measure.
      
      We duely arrived at said reletive’s home and was introduced to the family. A great time was subsequently had, but something bothered me, although I couldn’t define what. something about the child.
      
      Eventually I DID define it; the four year old had no teeth, yet DID a dark purple/ grey-coloured line where they should normally be. Very, very strange.
      
      Eventually we departed and on the way home I told my wife what I’d observed, expressing my puzzlement as to the cause.
      
      ‘Oh, that’s just what you get from drinking CocaCola; it’s very, very common. almost normal’, was her reply!
      
      This was something totally outside my cultural experience and was, to put it mildly, startling. Coke? For small children; even for babies??
      
      Observation over the years since that first encounter, has indicated that indeed, within ‘Polynesian’ culture feeding ‘littlies’ ‘coke’ is very, very common; evidently the children love the taste, it ‘fills them up’, stops them crying and makes the mum’s task easier. What is there not to like?
      
      And the teeth? Not a problem; after they fall out there’s another set, so no worries.
      
      And the ‘toothless’ four year old?
      
      He’s now 1.93 metres tall, built like the proverbial, and yes he DOES have all his (second set of) teeth!
      
      He survived, shame about his first set of fangs…
      
      As I said, FWIW. Toothbrushes BTW, are invariably in short supply within such families (They don’t usually stop small, hungry, children from crying…) …

        This morning there was a lot of fuss being made about adults smoking in cars with children captive in the back seat and how the PM should condemn it and change the law. Coca-Cola given to young children is in the same wheelhouse. Add it to the list of bad-parenting…

    Yes the chair costs $80,000, but that is funded (circa $130,000 incl interest exp.) over 10 years & amortised over 10 years. Over that period, assuming 220 working days per years * 6 consultations per working day that equals 13,200 consultations over 10 years or less than $10 per consultation to pay for the chair.
    
    Like you I’ve heard numbers thrown around to just high costs, but when you are charged $200 plus to see a dental hygienist (not the dentist) you realise the profession is milking their protected status.

        Well, rates have risen and incidentally NZ was 53rd in the world at that time so is that 1 lie or 2 lies from Ardern? It’s really hard to keep count with her isn’t it.

        No that’s the women who get into a relationship with them for money not love.
        They make their lives miserable because it wasn’t love.
        They pop out a few kids and refuse to work.
        The relationship eventually ends.
        The dentist has 50% plus property ruling made agianst then because she didn’t work.
        She gets the kids full custody because he works to hard etc, think of the children (mum).
        A maintenance ruling is made against him plus child support.
        While he was working she was having an affair too.
        
        Ultimately he looses everything for what?
        Or it was about to happen, knew he was screwed, did it anyway.
        What happened? I didn’t see that coming? Everything was wonderfull according to the wife.
        
        When your in a dark space it’s hard to see far into the future where things can be far better.

  Perhaps you could ask a dentist why they are so expensive.
  For that matter why are lawyers so expensive?
  Why are real estate agents so expensive?
  I would say I would have spent far more on real estate agents over the years to sell three houses than I’m ever likely to spend at the dentist.
  I’ve heard that dentists start their career with 100-150 thousand dollars student loans after all those years at Otago. Equipment costs a fortune. Then they have to look down people’s gobs all day long.
  
  Having said all that I’m all for taxpayer subsidised dental treatment for all. Those buggers are so expensive!

  People go too often. I haven’t been since 1987 and my teeth are fine but probably every five years is a good idea if you brush properly. If you make taxpayers pay, you will lock in excessive and wasteful use of dentists. There would be a lot more mileage in paying for everyone to have a checkup at the doctor every two years.

        You are right in that we should read many opinions. The Desiderata puts it so well: ‘Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.’
        
        But I was banned – no explanation, not even a First Strike – from commenting on Whale Oil because I, quite reasonably, pointed out that one of the answers in a Quiz he was running was ever-so-slightly unfactual.

    tas: I suggest you are right. For me the disincentive to contribute there came with the absurd moderation of Pete Belt. He was officious to the point of fascism and is ideally summed-up by the aphorism that “when you give a small man a big discretion, the discretion dies first!” Before the moderation policy entered the scorched-earth range the blog was generally light-hearted entertaining and informative. Now it seems like a tiny closed shop exhibiting repetitive attitudes and the “party-line.” I am genuinely sorry to see it withering as in the past it certainly did hold weight in an otherwise lack lustre media; but all things must pass!

      I agree. I made the comment when Nicky Hager was going on. “Perhaps the mods relax the rules when discussing Hager”. For that I was banned for a month. After a month I applied for re instatement and was told by Belt I was banned permantly for trying to re-apply.

        lemuzz: I was banned from there for 6 months for quoting from a Phillip Larkin poem dating from 1961 which contained the “F” word.The poem was in the context of the topic being discussed. I doubt Belt had heard of Larkin. I wasn’t banned permanently but Belt’s pig ignorance permanently tainted the blog for me.         I have also posted that very thought. The rabid biliousness that emanates from them will be having an effect on the more neutral voter.
        
        Ardern’s instructions are to “move” the narrative but the way that it is done alienates many and I have had people confirm that to me. They have said that they couldn’t vote against the party but they will certainly not vote for it.
        
        The “silly girly” brigade who pushed for Adern because she was”so young” “a woman” will grow up and hopefully we can have a government that is selected on the soundness of their policies rather than a spinning of bullshit and an auction of baubles.

KiwiBuild the Numbers

The Kiwibuild unit reports the numbers (link below). Have to say there needs to be a lot more progress if Kiwibuild does not continue to be rated a major Fail. Big gap between under construction and contracted, though do we know what ‘contracted’ means? I suspect it is not ‘contracted’ in the usual sense of the word. And a huge gap between pre-qualified and on the mailing list.

At this rate, no need for ballots, just give a place to everyone pre-qualified and use the saved money on street parties.

Complete – 18
Homeowners – 4
Pre-qualified (so eligible to enter a ballot) – 214
Under construction – 73
Contracted – 3,375

  None of these provide additional housing artem. These are all homes that have been developers projects, so would have (or were) been built anyway.
  
  Twitford promised us 100,000 ADDITIONAL homes, so we are still to see additional home number 1, and I for one am not holding my breath !

  WO has already drawn his line in the sand to bring Bridges and Benett down, so there is no reason to expect any sanity or balance from that quarter.
  
  Since JLR knew he was being recorded and the others did not, the secret tapes are all acting on his part. They are all set up to get the soundbites he wants – and fails to get.
  
  These were also not all the interactions they had since he cherry-picked and only released recordings that were, in his mind, damaging – not all the recordings he would have made.
  
  Without all the recordings, one or two tapes destroys context. It is like picking a sentence out of a conversation or a paragraph out of a whole book.
  
  One wonders how long they have been running this campaign. Does it go back as far as the last election? Did Slater & JLR help set up Winston by getting him that 7%?

        At the just been Labour conference one of the policy ideas raised and passed was lowering the voting age to 16.
        
        So drop the MMP threshold to 3% and drop the age voting age to 16.

See what the Labour has repeatedly done over the past two decades is choose the Peter Dunne/Winston option ahead of the Greens to protect the hard left from any coalition fallout/backlash.         No Paulus page 38 detailed the granting of a safe seat for the old drunk was the price for selecting Labour with Greens on the side to be tossed for best results. Unfortunately with the changed font it became fine print and nobody reads the fine print do they.     It is interesting to hear the actually recordings then watch the cherry picked TVNZ reports that weight heavily against Simon Bridges. Most people just pick up the TVNZ report and assume it is fact. Jessica Mutch McKay, lovely but married to Jacinda Ardern’s bodyguard. Such a close association raises a question mark over independence particularly given the distorted reports on this topic.

  You only have to read the dubious opinion piece by a Labour/Green PR spin merchant on today’s Horrid website to see the line the media are spinning.
  1. National are not being a good opposition by attacking the government’s failures (trouble is there are too many – subsidized property speculation via KiwiBuild for middle class kids). He wants National to lay out their policy statements – no chance now with the next election 2 years away;
  2. Attack Bridges and suggest the caucus will topple him, comes with dubious internal Labour poll, suggesting National below 40% and Labour/Greens have 20% gap – unlikely;
  3. Upset National didn’t fall for going full retard on Ardern’s offering 600 teacher aids – why would National respond? The teacher strike next week will show Labour has created a problem for itself. Teacher aids are not a solution to resolving the staffing/pay issue in primary schools.
  4. Attacks Bridges over latest JLR tape. The experts of that tape show Bridges/Bennett were being supportive of someone with big problems. It also shows JLR’s friends are not friends you want.
  
  If that is the media’s line, then after 12 months the CoL are still lost!

At the time the current government was formed, I recall reading here that it probably wouldn’t survive beyond a year. PM Ardern is now one of the most admired leaders on the world stage, while the Leader of the Opposition enjoys a similar level of support among the voting public to Jamie-Lee Ross.

Are there any commentators on this site with the integrity to acknowledge that their predictions for the longevity of the Coalition government might have been a bit off?

    Can you name another NZ Govt that has achieved less? A former PM who is less experience, has made worse choices or has made less decisions. The cost of the oil and gas decision alone must be in the $30-$40B range, maybe more. That is a greater cost by some margin than the ChCh earthquakes which flattened an entire city

  I didn’t say it would fall apart within a year. I said that the incentives for the three parties to keep it together are too great.
  
  Frankly, I think my expectations have been met. The government is incompetent with Winston adding a sprinkling of corruption.
  
  That said, I didn’t expect how popular Ardern would be internationally. I guess being young, female, and giving birth, will do that. But that does not reflect anything about her doing a good job.

  I thought it was foolish to predict the demise of the COL so early.
  
  One thing I know about politicians is they crave power almost more than anything else, so it would have to take an extreme series of events for the COL to fall apart so soon; it’s in their own self interest to remain in power no matter how many dead rats they have to swallow. (We’ve seen this attitude repeatedly most obviously with the Greens).
  
  Whether they retain power after the 2020 election is another matter.

Go on Facebook and look under news feeds of News Hub, 1 News, NZ Herald etc of any story that pertains to her and look at the comments ordinary people leave. Sure, there are some who like her, but many who don’t.
  
  Ditto for Trump – look at the Facebook news feeds of any of our main media networks about any stories that are critical of Trump and look at the comments. You’ll see someone making a comment critical of the media and supporting Trump, and the likes will outnumber the dislikes by 10 to one or even more.

  New regional fuel taxes were introduced to bail out Phil Goff and balance his books, Only for Phil though cause he’s special. This is mysteriously the fuel companies fault.
  
  Criminals who haven’t asked for residency have been granted. Taxpayers have been denied it.
  
  The PM doesn’t know what GDP is, has lied to the public has personally endorsed the decision to give the criminal residency. She has also wasted 80k of our tax money because she doesn’t know how to use a beast pump.

I’m proud of my heritage as a New Zealander (3rd generation), and I value my New Zealand passport, the only national passport that has ever borne my name and personal credentials.

As the years pass, I have become increasingly frustrated by our local news media referring to New Zealanders, sometimes almost invariably, as “Kiwis”. Last evening, for example, our Government-operated TV1 Channel’s 6.00pm News carried a major item about NZ’s liberation, 100 years ago, of the French town of Le Quesnoy. In a commentary of some 3 minutes duration, the term “Kiwi(s)” was used 8 times, while “New Zealand(ers)” received 3 mentions.

There’s nothing objectional about the colloquial term “Kiwi” being used sparingly in informal commentary on this country’s events, news and people. But it is not the national and accepted name by which our country and its people are known and respected internationally. Is it asking too much for our distinctive “New Zealand” name be used as ‘the norm’, with the colloquial “Kiwi” name making much rarer appearances in locally-based news and commentary?

      In the NZ Division which assaulted Le Quesnoy there was a Maori pioneer unit. I am not sure what they did but suspect they put the fear of God into the Germans for all the usual reasons..

        The assault on Le Quesnoy was carried out by members of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th battalions of the NZ Rifle Brigade who were part of the New Zealand Division. Many came from the South Island, particularly Canterbury. Few if any at all would have been of Maori descent. Some 2000 Maori served in WWI – a fraction of New Zealand’s overall effort, but there was also much Maori opposition to participation. In addition the authorities were wary of employing Maori directly against a European enemy. Most Maori on the Western Front therefore served in pioneer battalions who were involved in support tasks like tunneling. There are no reports I am aware of that they in any way intimidated the Germans at Le Quesnoy.

        In my UK army career the Pioneer Corps dug the Lats and generally cleaned up around for example Tented camps. Did a good job.

        “When a section of the 4th Battalion reached the inner walls about midday on 4 November, they had already scaled the complex network of outer ramparts with ladders, supplied by the sappers (or engineers). But due to the height of the inner wall, the riflemen could only position a ladder on a narrow ledge atop a sluice gate. Led by Lieutenant Leslie Averill, the battalion’s intelligence officer, a small group of men quickly climbed up the wall. After exchanging shots with fleeing Germans, the New Zealanders entered the town. The garrison quickly surrendered.
        
        If this is correct, the Maori soldier might have been the first of the pioneers over the outer ramparts, but not the inner wall.

        Paulus in his post talks about Pioneers digging latrines. They do more than that. They were parallel to the sappers of engineering units. Nowadays, sappers seem to have evolved into combat engineers.

One interesting sentence in the article.
“Metcalfe said the remains were taken to Whangārei Hospital where police carried out victim identification procedures. The scene was blessed by a kaumatua.”

Two points: firstly, why use the Maori place name “Whangārei” in an English newspaper article when the English place name “Whangarei” would do the job.
Secondly, why mention the blessing by a culture totally unrelated to things Korean? I could understand if a Christian pastor (as many Koreans are Christian) were to be involved (at the request of the family), but why the involvement of an alien culture (from the Korean perspective)? If the Maori elder voluntarily did his thing, then okay, but I wouldn’t want him to be funded by the taxpayer (separation of church and state and all that).
It seems to me that the action of “blessing” the site is a move to assert iwi dominance (this is “our land”) and the action of the Herald in mentioning this (and using Maori place names) is in concert to reinforce this political agenda.
Or am I reading too much into what seems to be a standard practice in NZ.

Hypothetically, imagine that a Sunni Muslim were killed in a traffic accident on a beach, and his mates beat up the kaumatua (as a pagan in their eyes and causing offense to them) who came to do the blessing. What would the Herald do?

  I think you are right Odakyu-sen. Maori “blessings”, usually paid for by the taxpayer or ratepayers, are it seems mandatory these days. Just the other day Wellington’s Mayor preposterously had one to bless the closure to cars of certain inner-city streets on a Sunday. I have also sat through them before international conferences and at the opening of new offices. It appears neolithic animism is the new State religion and a tidy little money-earner as well as an assertion of ownership and authenticity. The new religion is rigorously policed – if you demur you are given a black mark in the “responsiveness to Maori” box on your personal assessment form. On reflection this forced imposition of religious ceremonial could be a human rights issue – well, good luck with that.

How’s this for multiculturist bullshit?

A taxpayer-funded “professor of diversity” in Auckland is quoted in Stuff as saying: “large countries such as India or China, where a lot of migrants come from, are “so heterogenous”.

The speaker: Edwina Pio, described as “New Zealand’s first and only professor of diversity and director of diversity at AUT”. ( AUT is the Auckland polytechnic transformed into a university).

Wow! But perhaps what you might expect in an article with the subheadline “Beautiful Diversity and Ugly Prejudice in Auckland”. It’s a report by Stuff on a survey its made on the ethnicity of Auckland students. Diversity is divine is the theme.

Pio seems to be one of three things: she is ignorant of the state of life in India and China, or she’s tailoring her message, or she’s been misquoted.

Consider China’s “heterogeneity”. Han Chinese are absolutely the dominant ethnic group. Not only in traditional China, but they are absorbing other ethnic groups in Inner Mongolia, Manchuria, and Tibet.

In what used to be Sinkiang, the majority population of the ethnic-Turkic Uighurs are being “re-educated” in huge detention camps.

One language, Mandarin, has been imposed on the country, and local languages such as Cantonese are being squeezed out of TV. (They are languages, often mutually unintelligble, though they use a common written language).

China isn’t into diversity and multiculturism.

Then consider India’s “heterogeneity”. It has a vicious, and enduring caste system, which includes murder, rape, and home burning of people of lower designated groups who infringe their birth-assigned classes. Social justice warriors who would say, “ah, but this isn’t racism”, should note the varying hues of skin in the different castes, from the light-coloured Brahmins down to the typical dark skins of the lowest castes. (For those who doubt that, see the link at the bottom of this post).

My father who spent the entirety of WWII over there would have loathed that sort of thing.

I was speaking with someone who has resigned from their very lucrative position in a large company to move to a govt job in Wellington. Offered the position a month ago but has just been informed the appointment has been challenged by another of the applicants who lost out on the position. How is anyone to make a decision to change their job if this is likely to happen? If challenging a decision is legitimate, surely a time limit of 48 hours to do so would be sufficient?
How is anyone to trust a job offer???
