So we’re going to get ‘sticking-plaster’ fix-ups to the worst bits of the highway network (along with reduced speed limits) instead of the proper dual-carriageway system that National had in the plans.
The money saved will be spent on a slow tram to Auckland airport.
Thanks Winston and the idiots who voted for you.

    Yesterday, Twitford & JAG had the crash audacity to do their $1.4bn announcement at the top of the Dome Valley.
    
    Instead of a modern highway linking the north with Auckland, we are getting plaster over a wound that needs surgery.
    
    JAG this morning, saying the road toll is too high & it will take a few years for these measures to have an impact. Unless you are going to have mobile speed cameras every 3 to 5 km and make the speed 60 km Warkworth to Whangarei, you are not going to cut the road toll.
    
    The problem for the dumb yank and Twitford is Auckland Council plan major growth in the region, so the brainless due will snarl up the roads instead.

        Working in the Dome Valley is going to cause huge congestion through the narrow areas.
        
        Then there is whatever they are planning to do with SH1 through the towns of Wellsford, Te Hana & Kaiwaka. In each instance SH1 is the main street through the town.

      Yes exactly. On major highways in Eastern Australia, that process of building a safe divided roading network is complete. It took 35 years. In the mid 1980s, Australia’s highways between Sydney and Melbourne were pretty much like New Zealand’s today. 35 years later they are transformed or more accurately replaced.
      
      New Zealand could have done the same.

    Wait until the now 2 lane “expressway” from Otaki to Levin opens. As the local member why isn’t Nathan Guy slamming that crazy decision. Just think about it. We finally, finally get a motorway from Wellington to Levin, but oops we ran out of money so the last 8 kms is 2 lanes. It is the Terrace Tunnel all over again, the madness of which plagues Wellington every day.

        I’m hearing NZTA have finally made a decision on the Otaki to Levin Road. This process has had a big emotional impact on many residents and I acknowledge how difficult it has been for those affected.
        
        I’ll be pushing hard to ensure NZTA have a pot of money ready to compensate those who want a quick acquisition to get on with their lives.
        
        There is still some funding uncertainty as the community wants and deserves a 4 lane expressway, and it’s frustrating to see it downgraded to only a 2 lane road. This is a result of the Government raiding the funding to pay for Auckland trams.
        
        I also call on NZTA to make urgent safety improvements to this unsafe road before Xmas with all that holiday traffic just around the corner.”

    I was musing the other day on JAG and her obvious bitter hatred of proper dual-carriageway roading systems. Everyone else who has driven or been driven on one of these wonderfully easy, wide and straight motorways, with the ability to pass anyone tootling along in the slow lane is pleased to finally be able to get from A to B quickly and safely.
    The stupid JAG woman must be hight if she believes the road toll will be reduced by 160 deaths by slowing us all down on 2-way second-rate old roads with a wire cheese-cutter barrier to stop head-ons.

      In fact if the present regime had a choice Transmission Gully Motorway would not have happened. It took a National Government to approve the project. That was against all odds where the Lie-bour sickos held most of the electorate seats.

      I tow a horse float often at the weekends, and passing lanes are a treat to drive along – no pressure from tailgaters to speed up

But still amazes me that even when I give people enough room so they can pass me without going over the centre line there are people who just will not pass.   Under MMP no one will ever know the aspirations of those who voted for Winston – whether they hoped he would put Labour in power, or form a coalition with National.
  There is of course a high chance that the latter is true, that the majority hoped for a NZF/National Government, and Winston has decided contrary to their hopes.
  
  So, I suppose ‘Yes’, it makes them all idiots.
  
  Before the Election, Labour proposed a water tax, but not the rate it would apply – 1 cent or 2, per cubic metre of water for farmers. So with that uncertainty, Ardern saw a major mistake and formed her first committee to consider it for the next Election – the Working Tax Group, about to announce a Capital Gains Tax instead.
  But Ardern avoided an Electoral disaster: asking people to vote for uncertainty.
  
  I am still amazed and cannot understand why people who would not have voted for an uncertain water tax, voted for Winston.
  There’s my vote, Winston – do with it what you will, although you haven’t told us. 186,706 people did that. Allowed Winston to make his mind up for them.
  
  MMP is often described as the system foisted on Germany after the War to restrain the likes of Hitler ever taking power again.
  Buggered if I can understand how it prevents that, seeing how it works here.

    What I don’t understand about Winston First voters is how often they allow themselves to be fooled. I can understand first time voters voting for him, since they might not have seen how willing he is to lie. As for the rest, I guess there is a significant proportion of the population that don’t realise they’ve taken the word ‘gullible’ out of the dictionary.

Once we crash out of Europe Mourinho will be gone and good riddance to the brat. And it’s painful to watch the Scousers get back on their perch and the noisy neighbours winning. And YES as a died-in-the-wool, Gerrard Fam, Liverpool fan… I’m supposed to be down on Man U (and generally am), but even with all that, just don’t want to see a club destroy its own shining legacy (well, okay; maybe just for 2 or 3 seasons 😉 ).

  Did it not occur to the government that IF you allow non-English-speaking refugees into the country AND if you want them to be able to integrate and become useful members of society, then they must be able to speak English.
  
  On the other hand, IF you allow non-English-speaking refugees into the country AND if you DO NOT WANT them to be able to integrate, then you will cut funding for TESOL programs for them.
  
  Makes perfect sense.
  
  Or perhaps there is no master plan and this is simply the result of incompetence.

Dear AirNZ (and Flipper),

I will never fly AirNZ again, ever. First Class on Emirates is quite the mind blowing experience. Best fun Ive ever had making my way to London. Whilst it wont often be First Class, Business Class isnt too bloody shabby either, the wine selection is brilliant, wonderful service and the food wonderful.

Sorry AirNZ, with average BC seats, high prices, cancelled and nearly always delayed flights, you just dont cut it any more.

Its been real.

  Last flight I had on Air NZ the Air NZ staffer at the gate YELLED at me to get back when BC was called.
  I obviously didn’t look like I was the type that would travel BC. I must admit I was rather gobsmacked at this rather pathetic display. I would have once formally complained, but I tried that last year after a monumental FUCKUP but all I got was a smarmy ‘fuck you’ reply.

      Air New Zealand, and I have been a loyal passenger for around 40 years, is bloody terrible. Anyone, and I mean anyone is now employed as cabin crew and they are just straight out rude. Recently, on an overnight flight, I went looking for water since none was brought around. I found two crew members sitting at the back of the plane gossiping. They looked at me as if to say “How dare you come back here and interrupt us and sort of “Wadda you want?” Really unpleasant. I asked for water and with a sigh one got up and deigned to give me some. Bloody disgusting. The Koru Lounge has now become a joke with every man, his dog and thousands of kids in there. Not worth the money. I’m leaving ANZ and Koru and will look for an airline that actually cares about its passengers. I have heard Emirates and Qatar are waaaaay better.

  I am glad you mentioned Air NZ’s failings, and what a drop in service they are suffering. Our recent mishaps started in having an early morning flight to Sydney suddenly cancelled. Had later flight that day. Sydney to Adelaide with Virgin no problems. Adelaide to Auckland delayed 3 hours by ‘technical problems’, another 20 minutes on tarmac waiting for a clearance, missed connecting flight in AK, got put up in airport hotel. AK to Wellington delayed 20 minutes by ‘technical problems’. Just seemed a total comedy of errors. I spoke at AK with a seasoned business traveller and he said he ‘just rolls’ with the Air NZ delays now, so common are they.

  Emirates are OK. Until they have a plane crash on landing at Dubai closing the airport. And you are with your wife and kids in Lisbon. Wait for hours and hours to be told they will put us up in a hotel. (which is good). Arrive Hotel at 11 p.m. after waiting 8 hours. Said Hotel gives you a plate of rice with some indeterminate muck in it for dinner, paired with a glass of 91 octane masquerading as a glass of “wine”. Then you are woken at 2.30 a.m. to tell you they have a flight. Then, under EU rules, a flight that’s delayed leaving an EU destination pays compensation. Except if you are Emirates. They tell you to fuck off and then don’t respond to any further correspondence. Other than that, they were really good……

  Actually Minto still won’t be, as the African doesn’t go far enough. Once the Whites (equivalent to the Kulaks) are gone, you then have to eliminate the other tribes as they are also your enemies. Only then, will you have true equality and ‘true’ Minto-tyoe socialism / communism.
  
  I’m not sure that the Whites will go along with the first suggestion, and the Zulu’s definitely won’t be a party to the second.

I read this yesterday.

I was gobsmacked at the intellectual dishonesty displayed in this piece of writing. Yes, I am aware that women have a genuine fear of the actions of some men. I honestly get this. But it does not, and cannot follow that when a man stands up and says, “I am not one of these men, and it is unfair for you to portray me as one”, you brand him as selfish for saying so.

Assuming that all men are dangerous until proved otherwise is a bit of a poisonous worldview. Imagine the outcry if we were to regard Maori, or Muslims, or Mexicans in the same regard.

The fact is, in every relationship, trust is earned. I hope to raise my daughter so she is not a slave to a culture of victimhood, and that she knows who to trust and how to keep herself safe. To stay in public places, and stay with friends. To call me if she needs help. I know this because the world we live in is mostly safe, but hides monsters, but I do not want her to see the world as being full of monsters because of the inherent sadness that this brings.

I will need to trust her to find her own knight in shining armour, knowing that she can kill her own dragons should the need arise.

  These women are engaging in outright bullying, oppressive behaviour. They will aggressively tell us, “Women are living in fear of ALL men” and “ALL men need to do something about this, you men are ALL responsible”; then if any man dares to try and defend himself, he gets bullied and belittled and effectively told to shut up.
  
  I wonder if it ever occurs to these women that they are engaging in the same aggressive bullying behaviour that they so loudly condemn in men?

    There is a saying. Be the change you want in the world. Highlight the good. Maori leaders such as Hone Harawira derive their status by perpetuating the downtrodden status of their people and then presenting them as their saviour, while doing nothing.
    
    The Lance O’Sullivans of Maoridom need to be praised. For every Malcolm Rewa, there is a Sir Jerry Mataperi, or Willie Apiata. There are hundreds of positive role models for Maori, but that Narrative does not suit Maori who thrive on painting their people as oppressed.
    
    I, for one am a member of a well known organisation that has, as part of it’s creed, a requirement to make a vow to respect women. All women. We do this as an outward expression of what it means to be a good man. And no, it’s not a church.

    Albert, you are lumping together ‘Maori and Muslims’ in your statement. But there is a big difference: we are born with our ethnicity or gender and there should be no discrimination on something we can’t change.
    
    But faith and culture, while people are born into them, are something every adult needs to have a good think about. Any faith that allows wife-beating, slavery, rape of sex slaves, killing apostates, killing gays and killing or oppressing infidels should be questioned. And in NZ, people are free to leave that faith and find something more in line with our concept of equal rights for everyone.

  I was fucking fuming as I knew he would move on and carry on his Peter Pan bullshit with the younger girls but I hung with whom I call “The Good Guys
  In this case it was a twenty year old Gen ‘Y’ who’s facing serious time but owning his shit and a sixty year old Irish Grandfather who hasn’t had a drink in forty years and in no way did I feel threatened. It all goes back to “The Rules”.
  Rule #1. Count your numbers. Make sure you are flanked by people who would throw down for you and it’s you plus at least one more. A big dog counts as one.

  2. A racist;

It turns out that 19,000 text messages between Sztrok and Page were recovered, but the DOJ deleted them all (probably to save themselves).

The Department of Justice wiped text messages between former FBI employees Lisa Page and Peter Strozk from their cell phones before the Office of the Inspector General could review them, a new report from the DOJ watchdog reveals.

The 11-page report reveals that almost a month after Strzok was removed from Mueller’s team, his government-issued iPhone was wiped clean and restored to factory settings by another individual working in Mueller’s office. The special counsel’s Record’s Officer told investigators that “she determined it did not contain records that needed to be retained.”

  Well for one thing, his texts will be backed up on his iCloud account, so they’re not gone. Unless he had a specific iCloud account for work and that got closed down too.
  
  But more importantly, this is a complete and utter non-issue given the avalanche of evidence that the Trump organisation and campaign stink to high heaven and have been proven to have broken 100+ laws in their pursuit of power.
  
  The Mueller steamroller is coming, and it’s going to run down a fair few of Trump’s swamp creatures, including Trump himself I would bet.

    This would be laughable if people weren’t going to prison as a result, not to mention its subversion of democratic self-government. If it succeeds in driving Trump from office, it will set not merely a grim precedent for future elections. It will be a clear and present danger to every person in this country.

A who’s who of prominent women challenge men and the Government to act in the wake of Grace Millane’s murder.

The Herald says court documents list the murder suspect as living at the same address as CityLife Hotel where Millane was last seen alive.

This raises the question, which will certainly be interested to see answered –
Even if born in New Zealand, what recent time has this person lived here, given his accommodation?

Which goes to address the “prominent women’s challenge” –
What contact have New Zealanders had with this man to be attuned to his attitudes, let alone contribute to them, to be condemned as bearing collective male shame?
Is this man even a ‘product’ of the ‘Kiwi’ society the open letter demands change of?

And since suppression rules means this aspect of the accused is currently the same status as Schrödinger’s cat, is Government comments welcoming this letter, not just adapting the entire tragedy to fit a current agenda.

The Undersecretary for Domestic and Sexual Violence Jan Logie said she was “very pleased” with the letter.
“People making this call gives us clear partners in this effort and we’re grateful for it,” she said.

More than 103,000 people have signed a petition asking the Crown to appeal the punishment handed down to 19-year-old Rouxle Le Roux, who killed 15-year-old Nathan Kraatskow in a hit-and-run in May.

Le Roux was sentenced to 11 months’ home detention and 250 hours’ community work, and was banned from driving for two-and-a-half years.

Mr Bridges, a former Crown prosecutor, said he was wary of criticising the judiciary, but told RadioLIVE on Monday “you do have to say though this does feel very light, in light of the circumstances”.

He said National justice spokesperson Mark Mitchell will receive the petition on behalf of Parliament on Tuesday.

“You’ve got a Government at the moment that you know, with good intentions is looking to have fewer people in prison. The worry is with that is you get more victims. I for one, although it’s never going to be perfect, I’d go with more in prisons and fewer victims.”

    I’m not suggesting mob rule. However, the judiciary is there to administer the law, and the law is set by parliament, who are the people’s representatives.
    
    If the leader of the ‘opposition’ feels uncomfortable criticising an obvious failure by a judge, then watch out because mob rule will be coming sooner than you think. Mobs form when all else has failed. Look at France.

      Parliament has not defined a code of sentencing as a schedule. There are ranges defined and it is left to the Judges to work within those. That allows for justice, mercy and the wide range of seriousness. Those not present in Court can never know all the circumstances. I understand that Judiciary as a whole has developed guidelines which aim to ensure similar sentencing in different Courts for similar offences. We cannot ask much more. They have internal review processes and I have known Police and Probation Officers to give sentencing recommendations. Sentencing varies over time with changes in attitudes. It is important that in any period there is consistency.
      I don’t feel at present anything is out of order except possibly the time it takes for Judicial outcomes. Why can’t a criminal matter be disposed of within 3 months? We hear reports of appeals as the internal reviews take place and judgements out of line are quickly criticised.
      
      Politicans in NZ do not comment on judicial decisions. Likewise the Judges on Parliamentary matters.

  As I said yesterday, the Crown faces the hurdle of having to show that the ‘final’ prison sentence adopted (before Home Detention is considered) as being manifestly insufficient. The Crown could find this difficult, hence is IMO unlikely to appeal. On the information available, I think the sentence is adequate for deterrence and rehabilitation purposes.
  This is especially as media reports have not indicated what action she took or neglected that contributed to the accident, this would need to be something more than intoxication.
  On the bare facts as known, the deceased cyclist ran a red light and T boned the offender’s car. It can be inferred the offender did not run a red light. Presumably a reasonable motorist driving through the intersection at a reasonable speed could have braked or taken other steps to avoid the accident. So through being intoxicated she was not capable of taking the actions that a reasonable motorist would have been taken.
  Another matter – her lawyer probably obtained a sentencing indication and she pleaded guilty on the basis of that indication out of pragmatism. If an appeal court were to consider increasing the sentence, it would need to give the offender the opportunity of vacating the guilty plea probably meaning a retrial by jury which could well acquit her. This means she could only be sentenced for a drink-drive, failing to stop and failing to render assistance. The consequence would then probably be a community sentence and a 18 to 24 month disqualification. So the Crown may have obtained the best possible outcome in the circumstances and an appeal could backfire on the Crown.

    The more the facts of this come out, the more I think the sentence is appropriate. If the deceased T boned the car, there is nothing the driver could have done, in fact, the first she may have been aware of the cyclist is at the moment of impact. Whether she was stoned, pissed or asleep would have made no difference. Where she is totally out of line is her leaving the scene and her inappropriate behaviour after the accident. But neither of those deserve jail.

    Interestingly the Crown has indicated that it is considering an appeal against sentence. This is an appropriate move since there is public concern in this case. Generally the Crown contract lawyer would recommend an appeal if the judge is considered to have gone significantly off the rails. Presumably that lawyer would now be asked to report on this for the Crown Solicitor’s decision. Points to be considers would be as I outlined before except that the lawyer would have a better idea of sentencing trends etc.

I admit that Simon Bridges does seem to want to fence-sit at times rather than lay himself open to the predictable MSM onslaught were he to take a less equivocal stance on issues. That’s the problem with so many in National, and I include our own generous host DPF in this, that they in essence have soppily liberal social attitudes. People wring their hands in horror at the notion of capital punishment lest some innocent be put to death in error but happily endorse the killing of thousands of innocent unborn children and want to extend this to euthanising the elderly and infirm.

Te Ati Awa’s glittering $247m Waitara prize

“The New Plymouth District Council (Waitara Lands) Bill that passed its third reading on Thursday shows how a tribal group managed to expand a grievance into three current settlements totalling over $247 million.

Waitara, a town of 6900 located 16km north of New Plymouth, was where the 1860s tribal rebellions started when one Maori landowner wished to sell his Pekapeka Block to the Government and another chief, who didn’t own the land, forbade him and triggered hostilities.

Te Ati Awa and two sub groups – Manukorihi and Otaraua – will get $28 million from property sales on Waitara land over the next two decades, plus $28 million more to go to projects co-managed by the tribe and the Taranaki Regional Council, according to Radio New Zealand. They’ll also get 120 hectares of land, mostly in reserves. Another $34 million will be allocated to Waitara River and environmental projects, co-governed by the council and tribe.

In 2014 the Crown settled with Te Ati Awa, the tribe which built the pa that triggered the 1860 fighting. They received $87 million and an apology. Te Ati Awa participated in the Taranaki Iwi settlement of 2015 which included $70 million in financial redress.

Te Ati Awa had been offered in the 2014 settlement to buy Waitara lands for $23 million, but the tribe hung out for more and got a further $90 million plus 120 hectares.

It appears that the current Government is even more generous with taxpayers’ money for tribal interests than the former Government was and there is not a peep out of Winston Peters, who garnered the one-law-for-all vote in 2017.

Waitara is mostly leasehold land, and most of the leases are residential. The ongoing dispute has had a devastating effect on land valuations. Residential leaseholders are often stuck with homes that they can only sell under valuation.”

“I hate to say this on like, a MediaWorks station, but it’s all Netflix, man. I’m sorry. It’s just all Netflix,” he told hosts Mike Puru and Carly Flynn.

“I can’t even think what it’s called, but the one I’m watching at the moment that’s really good, it’s not Vikings, but the Danes come over to England. It’s something-or-rather Kingdom. It’s good.”

Mr Bridges appears to have been talking about The Last Kingdom, a critically acclaimed show about the Saxon resistance against Viking invaders, currently in its third season.

Lots of the people who fled to Winston Peters wanted a less sanitised politics, more entertainment,. And a tell it like it is politician. (Even if Winston is a duplicitous and dodgy dude) So Simon saying that he watches viking films filledd with blood and guts on netflix will resonate with plenty of guys. It also makes him less boring. I know my husband is also glued to the Vikings series. I think being less careful with what he says will be good for Simon. More authentic vs brand labour virtue signalling.

      The rental housing issue is smoke stench for the landlord to deal with.
      
      However, if you can show me meta studies proving that marijuana has no bad health effects, I’d like to see them.
      
      Trying to reduce tobacco and alcohol use gives us plenty to do. I don’t see the logic of legalising other harmful substances.

        Unlikely. Marijuana is not the drug of favour amongst young people who prefer MDMA or similar. In any case addiction rates are low…..9% & it is not a difficult drug to quit. (By comparison 32% of tobacco users will become addicted, 23% of heroin users, 17% of cocaine users & 15% of alcohol users).

    The question is if the reason for the higher rate violence of those who have some Maori family violence genetic, cultural or other factors.
    
    One thing that is missing is marriage. This is something that few want to address including the political Children’s Commissioner.
    
    I believe that the one reasons for the higher rates of family violence with Maori could be cultural and possibly to a far lesser degree to genetics.

There has always been Climate Change since the earth was formed and it started to rain for about a million years.

If they are worried about man made pollution then tell India to stop breeding billions of useless people who contribute absolutely nothing to the world.

China has a large poulation and lots of polltuion but it does make most of the stuff that the world uses.

Bt we only have 15 million cows, Argentina has 50 million.
And we produce food for the whole world.

  Nobody died (yet), so not big news. But it did look spectacular on TV.
  Speaking of Japan, I’ve been there a few times and was constantly amazed that there are not more incidents like this.
  Went to a restaurant once in a wooden building about five stories high with gas burners going on all over the place, Bloody Hell.
