My take on how the drug dealer Sroubek fiasco will play out. It is my belief that he has a client list which includes senior NZLP members and/or their partners, and possibly senior figures in the New Zealand public service.

The offer of residency was negotiated to buy his silence, to keep that client list away from prying eyes. I suggest the public backlash against the indefensible offer of residency will see this denied, and instead he will be secretly offered cash ‘compensation’ for the harm caused by the residency flip-flop.

In other words, the payout currency for his silence will simply move from residency which is publicly visible, to cash which is invisible.

Of course the vexing question for the Labour government would be how to keep any kind of cash payout off-books, and undiscoverable. That should be rather difficult for “the most open, most transparent Government that New Zealand has ever had”.

National must prevent this subversion, and do so by starting to close each and every exit for Ardern at al. The rumoured relationship between Sroubrek and Clarke Gayford needs to be challenged and either categorically denied, or confirmed along with the nature of that relationship.

Some QT suggestions:

1. Can the Prime minister confirm if at any time in the last 5 years, Sroubek/Antolik or anyone representing Sroubek/Antolik had contact with any NZLP MP or with a member of their now immediate family, and if so whom, and for what singular purpose, or for what multiple purposes?

2. Will the prime minister assure the house that any compensation or payment, or any promise of future compensation or payment, to be made either directly to, or indirectly for the benefit of Sroubek/Antolik, will be disclosed to this House?

.. or..

3. Will the prime minister categorically rule out any form of compensation, be it monetary or otherwise, for Sroubek/Antolik?

  To be honest, it could be cross party. If National don’t touch it, that would explain why. I agree on keeping a look out for cash payments though – they would expect the taxpayer to fund it somehow.

      I don’t know what else you expect National to do Komata. Bridges, Michael Woodhouse and Mark Mitchell have asked multiple questions of the PM and Immigration Minister every sitting day since the story broke, the sought and were granted an urgent debate last week, and they have repeatedly called for Lees-Galloway to resign or be sacked. They certainly have been anything but “curiously silent” on the issue.

        Yes KS, but they haven’t used the ultimate weapon in Parliament:
        
        ‘There can be no legal liability for words spoken or actions taken as part of the proceedings of the House, except insofar as this protection may have been statutorily abrogated.[8] The legal basis of this exemption from liability is article 9 of the Bill of Rights 1688, although the privilege of freedom of speech in debate predates that enactment. The Bill of Rights is but a part of the wider compact between the legislative and judicial branches of government that secures mutual respect of their respective spheres of action. Article 9 of the Bill of Rights 1688 is part of the laws of New Zealand, and its effect is reaffirmed and aspects of its operation are clarified in the Parliamentary Privilege Act 2014.
        
        The protection article 9 offers extends beyond exempting legal liability for things said or done in debates or committees of the House. It entails also exemption from having to account “in any court or place out of Parliament”[12] for one’s parliamentary words or actions, even where no personal liability is in question. This latter aspect of the privilege was established by the Bill of Rights 1688 and the political settlement out of which that legislation arose. The prohibition is against impeaching or questioning proceedings in Parliament (questioning arguably has a broader scope than impeaching), although this injunction has not always been respected’.

    I don’t care how low you opinion of ILG is, but no one is stupid enough to grant residency to a passport fraud, convicted dealer with gang affiliations.

    There is a rational explanation for his actions, only the facts which support this rationality are not in the public domain.
    
    It is the oppositions job to get those facts into the public domain, and to ensure the police are supporting rather than obstructing that process.

    It seems that a mate of the Prime Minister’s partner was putting in a good word. This could be typical socialist cronyism.     I don’t buy it. The default, obvious, easy, lazy, no brainer decision was to deport. To instead choose the let him stay and give him permanent residency option was a pro-active decision that took some sort of special consideration.

  I have seen a lot of speculation and inuendo advanced here about this conspiracy theory. However, I haven’t seen any actual evidence yet.
  
  While I would love this to be true, and would certainly hope that any such plot was uncovered, I have yet to see anything that convinces me of its truth.

    It has no hope of being proven.
    First, Sroubek was an importer at a fairly high level, above any street level dealing which would involve him selling to individuals. If any member of any party was dealing with him, it would have been for wholesale purchases of class B drugs for supply, which no political party would countenance.
    Second, no drug dealer in his right mind keeps “client lists” which help identify clients.
    Don’t expect the Police to issue any denials on this theory; it is just too implausible.

        The theory advanced above doesn’t follow logic.
        
        Firstly, if Labour granted residency to Sroubek to cover up criminal activity, then the simplest course of action would be to confrim Sroubek’s residency and tough it out.
        
        Secondly, if they were to offer him a bribe to stay quiet, then why would he? Any such contract would be unenforceable due to the criminal nature of it, and therefore, Sroubek would still have Labour by the short and curlies, and would be nothing to stop him spilling the beans.
        
        Perhaps the only effective option would be for Labour to engage a hit-man to take Sroubek out…. total nonsense of course, but no more nonsensical than the other theories advanced.

It was interesting to watch the denigration of National (S Bridges) n on TV One last night, and again this morning on their breakfast programme mess. The puppet woman Holt was just silly, and so is their preferred PM poll.

S Bridges was right to note that voters do NOT vote for a Prime Minister and that they vote for a Party. It is the Party that elects the Prime Minister.

Last night DPF drew attention to pre-Christmas 2017 polling for Labour and now. I waited in vain for coverage of the 5% crash by Labour, and their sudden desire to lower MMP voter levels to shore up a Government that, with Peters et al gone, has no Parliamentary majority.
I suspect that when Ardern (and her male concubine) are given the arse in 2020 (or earlier) it will be said to be a case of the Democrats Florida and Georgia vote rigging diseases.
As for media commentators. When a major (by our piss-ant standards) newspaper chain says it has decided that the climate fraud is no fraud…. and it will not tolerate nor publish any contrary views ….. well, we have established a new nadir.
But isn’t it Stuff that gave us Small, and still gives us all the Watkins (their other overtly pro-Labour neutral observer) bullshit?

    So overall National has gone up but every polling group except woman has dropped.
    Does not make sense but assuming Soper is correct that is wonderful news for National. It means women, who everyone assumed were in love with the PM, are now deserting her in droves apparently.
    There is no other way to explain a drop in all other groups but overall National improves.
    
    No I do not believe what I have concluded but Soper must have drunk or high as a kite when he wrote the rubbish in his article.

      To be sure, it’s not all good news for National: despite an ongoing litany of cock-ups and embarrassments, the worst government in living memory remains above 40% in the popularity stakes.         I can’t understand how the poll could have Jacinda at 39% (ish), Simon 7%, Judith 6%. Winson 4% and yet National gets 48% – what was the question asked to arrive at National’s preferred PM numbers. Did people not have a preferred person for National or did they not ask National voters the leadership question. The numbers don’t really add up as National voters would never prefer Jacinda in a million years. Can anyone shed light on my ignorance please.

  Unfortunately I think in the case of labour they did vote for a person given how labour’s vote went up when Cindy became leader. I think it is a combined vote ultimately, and Mr Bridges would be wise to think on that. It is who the ultimate leader of the country will be and the politics of the party involved that is of concern to the public.
  labour got lucky with Cindy, she was a “breath of fresh air” bought in at the right time, not too soon that she would show how incompetent she was. we are stuck with her. Mr Bridges should think seriously as to whether he is the right person to lead the next election campaign. he might be and then again he might not be. However if they bring Judith Collins in and she proves not to be the right person national would have a huge problem. while the vote for National remains high under National maybe they should keep Simon, but the numbers are not large enough. could another leader bring in a larger percentage to get them over the line. I don’t know about that. What National should be doing is assisting another party to gain enough votes to be their support partner given how MMP works. It is the only way for National to regain the treasury benches.

    But Soviet and US (along once in a while with the UK) submarines did play merry games of chase in the Kermadec Trench, the Bay of Plenty north of Mayor Island where we had hydrophones installed, and more particularly in Cook Strait.
    The US subs in particular, reamed the Soviets who never knew the US was there. What is set out in “The hunt for Red October” was to some extent replicated down here. 🙂

  I worked with an academic specializing in whale song. He found it openly laughable that some professor fuckwit pontificated that loud undersea sounds (hundreds/ thousands of kms away) where upsetting the whales and making them strand. Considering whales can echolocate at 180dB.. yes 180 dB !!!!, he found this explanation idiotic.

Why PriNZess can’t sack ILG

There are numerous calls for ILG to be sacked, but can PriNZess actually do it? What exactly would she sack him for?

Poor decision making? Naah.

Right in the beginning of the Sroubek saga, PriNZess had a look at Sroubek’s file and said she came to the same conclusion as ILG and announced she agreed with his decision 100%. From that point on she was, so to speak, balls deep in the Sroubek saga.

She can’t fire ILG for poor decision making because she made exactly the same decision. She’d also have to fire herself too!

Same with accepting his resignation. If he resigns and she does not, then that’s a pretty bad look.

Lying to her? Naah.

There is no evidence of that either. Since Sroubek blew up she was with him every step of the way agreeing with his decisions, consulting with him on everything. So really there’s nothing she can pin on him that doesn’t implicate her too.

The only thing ILG has done that was on his own bat was hiding from the media behind a pole. Hardly a sacking offense, especially when PriNZess calls in from home half the time.

That was a massive political stumble. Rule number one for astute PMs: if your ministers stumble, keep your distance. Always leave some room for them to fall on their sword without splattering you in gore.

  Since the Labour caucus elects its Ministers, although the Leader allocates portfolios, agreed that Jacinda cannot sack a Minister unless she is confident of caucus support. However she can always re-shuffle portfolios and so can remove him from the Immigration role.

Following complaints from Microsoft, the Delhi Police have raided and shut down a number of ‘call centres’ in the Delhi area. This means we should get some respite from the gentlemen with foreign sounding accents saying they are calling from Microsoft and that your computer has problems. This respite may only be temporary since fresh ones will no doubt pop up.
I had one the other day, and as I was not too busy, I went along with him using a computer which could be re-imaged if compromised. I was transferred to a second then third person, the latter probably having the appropriate charm and skills. He waited patiently while I turned the machine on, updates installed then finally Windows. He then did the usual fake ‘tests’ to convinve me the computer had been compromised then got me to download and install a remote desktop facility (quite legitimate software). He then gave me a code number to enter to connect to his desktop. I deliberately entered the code incorrectly three times then told him he could stick the code up his [backside]. It then became apparent that his understanding of idiomatoc English was not the best – he did not understand what I meant. To my surprise I found I was on the phone half an hour but well worth it to imagine him spewing and spitting at the end of the call.

  The other other we were in the Manukau Mall. There’s a tradition Father Christmas there for the kids to have there photo taken with; except the kids didn’t seem much interested.
  Plenty of adults snuggling up to Santa though, including us!
  
  The malls in Bangkok go crazy at Christmas with decorations and fake snow all over the place. I’ll tell you right now their Santa Clauses are a lot prettier than the traditional old buggers we’re used to and ain’t nobody complaining!

    I certainly don’t find that a mid-winter festival that is loved and very much needed in the Northern hemisphere winter gets me very excited in NZ.
    
    But people have a great nostalgia for their childhood traditions.
    
    This can’t really be about skin colour: as I posted above, St Nikolaus has been depicted in many ways. Also, if you’re from a black family and dad slipped out and put on a Santa costume, your childhood nostalgia could be for that image.
    
    Regarding the costume: I always feel so sorry for the men in Santa costumes in parades on hot days.
    
    Nothing against a bit of evolution in that regard (more comfortable costume somehow), but why does everything have to be so *politicised* these days? A Maori warrior to virtue signal how bicultural Nelson is? Come on…

  A majority of Parliament can do anything it pleases. That’s a core principle of our system of government. Even those ‘entrenching’ provisions such as s268 of the Electoral Act that puport to require a 75% majority to repeal, are in fact meaningless and a simple majority can remove them. Of course there may be a political price for doing that but there is no constitutional reason it cannot be done.
  
  Also, the 5% is not even one of the entrenched provisions.

    No. The Courts can rule on this and have done so in other Commonwealth countries. If a section is entrenched by (say) 75%, then the same 75% majority is required to repeal or amend it. The Electoral Act entrenchment is valid since the entrenched sections had an unanimous vote in Parliament (it being traditional that Labour and National reach agreement on electoral matters.
    Geoffrey Palmer Would have liked to entrench his Bill of Rights Act, but there was insufficient public support for it and National did not support its passage. So entrenchment was out of the question.
    While theoretically Parliament might be able to amend or repeal an entrenched provision on a simple majority, doing so is likely to spark action in the High Court. What would happen in such a case is beyond my comprehension of constitutional law.

      I disagree with you. As NK says, it’s axiomatic that no government can bind any future government to any particular course of action; otherwise, that future government might be unable to meet the exigencies of unforeseen circumstances. In that event, the machinery of state would prove to be impotent, thus defeating the whole point of having a democratic legislature.
      As for the possible intervention of the courts: well, one could be sure that they would, indeed, have their say (you have cited precedent), particularly as they have, of late, been more inclined to political activism. Nevertheless, the government would quite likely remind the courts, politely but firmly, who it is that ultimately holds the reins of power. Let the courts huff and puff, by all means, but the initiative lies in the Parliamentary Chamber.
      Parliamentary sovereignty, for good or for ill, is, and always must be, sacrosanct in any democracy which rests on the principle of a plebiscite; and this is because unelected judges must defer to the wishes of the nation’s elected representatives.

So, *NZ Waste Management*, now owned by the Communist Chinese conglomerate Beijing Capital, want to establish a major new dump site in the *Dome Valley, just north of Auckland, on SH1.

They’re expecting something like 500 trucks could be making the return trip there every day, with the number expected to rise in the future. The tip site will be open 24/7, with dumping taking place between the hours of 5am and 10pm daily.

No wonder the locals are up in arms! I’ve been going duck shooting on a mates farm there for the last 20 years, so they can fuck off as far as I’m concerned as well. Why can’t they just ship all our waste back to China for recycling like they used to? Is our rubbish not good enough for them anymore??

      Not if labour hadn’t canned the Wellsford bypass. The land is nearly all purchased, the consents are in place, but no Labour has stopped it. It could have started immediately the Warkworth by-pass is completed, in fact Mr Mitchell says if National get back in the highway will be back on and can virtually start immediately.

  It is Auckland’s rubbish it has to go somewhere. Nimbyism of course will play out no matter where the suggestion is. But have a look at the area they are talking about, seriously it seems workable. The problem is Labour have canned the building of the new highway which would mean traffic would have an alternative route – the Wellsford bypass which goes to the east of Wellsford and the dome. It is not prime land. I live in the district and know the area. Shouldn’t effect the duck shooting.

  The dumpsite has nothing to do with who owns Waste Management, this was a ridiculous angle for the reporting to take.
  It has more to do with typical piss poor Auckland planning. i.e. the existing dump is nearing capacity, and the waste has to go somewhere.
  
  Now of course nobody wants it in their backyard but it has to go somewhere.
  Maybe it can be left to pile up in the streets and make Auckland the true third world city it has always aspired to be.

Just listening to the story on RNZ on compensation for people who had to leave their state houses due to trace levels of methamphetamine contamination. If non drug users were thrown out needlessly I don’t have any issue with them being compensated. I do have an issue with meth users being compensated. It is an evil drug. They should have been thrown out.

How is HNZ going to tell the difference? Or is it just compensation for everyone, even if you caused the contamination?

  Green leftists are claiming the National Govt was negligent because it tried to have a zero tolerance to meth in state houses. Now they say a bit of meth never hurt anyone science says so, and we must compensate. Yet a lot of the same people complaining are the ones that buy organic fruit and veg , advocate for flouride free water etc, and don’t vaccinate, despite the spray on normal vegetables being within the legally acceptable limits. …In the report, Bucknell University astronomer Katelyn Allers said that Tyson grabbed her arm and reached into her dress while looking at a tattoo. Ashley Watson, a former assistant to Tyson who worked on his latest “Cosmos” series, said she quit her job after Tyson made repeated inappropriate sexual advances.

Patheos has previously reported allegations by musician Tchiya Amet, who said Tyson raped her when they were graduate students at the University of Texas at Austin.

In a statement, “Cosmos” producers told The Post that they are “committed to a thorough investigation of this matter and to act accordingly as soon as it is concluded. … The credo at the heart of COSMOS is to follow the evidence wherever it leads.”

Fox Entertainment and National Geographic, which air the show, said they had just become aware of the allegations and are reviewing the reports. 21st Century Fox jointly owns the National Geographic channel with the National Geographic Society.

Tyson has not commented publicly, and requests for comment emailed to him and his representatives were not immediately returned.
In an email to The Post, Allers confirmed the details of her experience as reported by Patheos but declined to comment further. She told Patheos that she did not report the incident, which she says occurred at a social event after a 2009 meeting of the American Astronomical Society (AAS), because she didn’t think the society had a mechanism for reporting sexual harassment.

Kevin Marvel, executive officer of the AAS, said the society has not received any complaints involving Tyson since its code of conduct was implemented in 2008. He added that the society does not conduct investigations unless it has received a complaint. Tyson is an elected member of AAS.

        Hang on a sec – there were never any charges.
        
        The whole thing was initally dismissed before another prosecutor (with political motivation) took up the case. He was required to be interviewed by Swedish authorities but took up asylum in the embassy.
        Even the Swedish court recognised there was no reason they couldn’t question him in the embassy.
        Hence the 7 yr standoff.

Just a thought to the Simon Bridges haters out there. Did Andrew Little have his Travel expenses continually published and criticised in his first year for Labour including his trip to the UK to converse with their Labour Leader Jeromy Corbin (not sure I have spelling right) and also the scandal over JLR with his accusations of corruption. I think the Media gave him a pretty easy ride first off even with his trout mouth politics thrown at John Key. Just for the record I was a Bill English fan and I saw what people threw at him before the Election creating animosity and doubt for National voters and will I support Simon Bridges it is not because he is a great Politician like those before him it is because National need stability and with the vote as high as it is gives us that the preferred PM figures are not as you need to know the questions being asked before you make that judgement.

  I’d like to counterbalance your stream of negativity with a couple of people who I admired.
  One day my wife was in the supermarket, but when she reach the checkout she realized she’d left her atm card at home. She looked in her handbag for cash, but came up a few bucks short whereupon a Māori guy behind her offered to make up the difference.
  I was helping with a rebuild of my daughter’s house. A couple of guys turned up one day with a stack of new windows. One of the guys was a Syrian refugee. He told me that he had a successful business back home, but one day it was destroyed and he had to get out of the country. Eventually he made it here where he was starting again at the bottom. He said Syria used to be a beautiful country and he didn’t want to have to come here because it’s not his home, but he was grateful that we have given him a second chance.
  Yesterday I went to a SE Asian festival. First item was a superb rendition of our National Anthem by about twenty Malaysian singers. We also go to a lot of Thai events at the temple in Kelston. I sometimes think these immigrants are more patriotic than Kiwis born here.

My bet is the COL will put up and pass legislation to lower the threshold to 4% or even 3%.

They have the numbers to do it. And if they did and it resulted in them winning in 2020 whats the downside.
Their current supporters wont care in fact they would appauld such a move.
Sure they might risk a backlash but if they kept the Treasury Benches from 2020 to 2023 by that time the sheeple will have forgotten about the lowered threshold and unless the Right can get up a Party to counter Greens/NZF it wont matter to them.

That will be a dilemma for Macron who has been shouting from the roof tops about wanting a full blown Federalist European Government but removing that UN seat would surely be a very unpopular move in France if he took that step.

Riots in Paris over fuel taxes. This provides a very graphic demonstration of the difficulties faced in reducing carbon emissions.

The theory of fuel taxes is that by pushing up the price of gas it encourages people to drive less. But in practice that just doesn’t happen. For better or worse our society is dependent on cars, and the alternatives like public transport or cycling are vastly inferior. People can’t just stop going to work, taking the kids to school, buying groceries etc. so there is little they can do to reduce their fuel use.

When the price of gas goes up people just pay it, and resent having less money for other things. Any fuel tax sufficient to significantly change behaviour would be utter political suicide, and is never going to happen.

      I’ve already pre-paid my climate-change religious penance thanks.
      
      In the 100 years that NIWA says might lead to up to a 1m rise in sea level (good hedging of bets there chaps) I won’t be responsible for 126 more humans (child-free and wealthy because of it). So, just in exhaled CO2 alone (just their breathing, nothing else) I’m already 4,000 tonnes in credit. Add in another (conservative) 96,000 tonnes for the rest of their CO2 emissions and I’m 100k up.
      
      So yeah, I’ll keep flying (business natch), driving my petrol car, eating meat & dairy, using plastic products, staying in my beach house – in fact generally having the nice, civilised & comfortable life that previous generations could only dream of.

    It’s also worth noting that commenter here Wayne Mapp was the Minister in charge of NIWA while NIWA had their finger on the scale. There’s a chronological summary here.
    
    The NZ Climate Science Coalition asked for a judicial review of New Zealand’s official temperature record, and put together legal claims in July 2010. NIWA’s response then in defending it’s high quality expert analysis was to take the highly unusual step of declaring that its work was not meant to be taken as being important, official, or anything more than just labnotes for the boys basically. They said: “There is no “official” or “formal New Zealand Temperature Record” and “the NZTR is not a record and is not a public record for the purposes of the PRA”.

The victim industry …

In the Hooerald today there is a One-Roof feature headlined when “single women and Maori were locked out of the housing market.”

It includes this:

Being Maori could also be an impediment to getting a mortgage in the days when bank managers made value judgements. Even now the more Maori you look the harder it is to get a mortgage, says University of Auckland social psychologist Carla Houkamau.

Houkamau and colleagues’ 2015 study examined differences in the rates of home ownership between Maori who looked Maori and those who didn’t. The results found that Maori who looked more Maori were stereotyped and had more difficulty accessing finance.

‘The results found”? No possibility that they might have been parallel without any cause and effect relationship.

No mention is made that one of the main reasons Maori have found it hard to get mortgages is that the mortgage system round the world relies on land for security. That is clear-title land that can be seized in the event of the borrower not meeting payments.

Much, probably most, Maori land is community owned, is inalienable (unable to be sold), and thus is useless as security for mortgages.

With all due respect, “the more Maori you look” often is an indication of whether you live in the city or in the backblocks, where there has been less infusion of white genes and thus skin colour may be darker.

And if you are from the backblocks your land assets are more likely to be tribal and communal, and useless for borrowing, compared with the assets of urban Maori.

There are heaps of whites who can’t get mortgages. Lenders are interested in being repaid, and that is largely linked to the assets they can grab if necessary. Maori tribal elite buying into leafy suburbs will have less trouble getting mortgages than poor white folk do.

Single women in the past found it harder to get mortgages because their wages and salaries then tended to be well under men’s wages and mortgages are all about the ability to repay. Women’s wages might not be equal now, but the gap is much narrrower.

  People got mortgages from Building Societies or Insurance Companies.
  
  So if you did not have any building society shares or a big insurance policy you could not get a mortgage.

  Concerng Maori and mortgages.
  
  My wife is Maori (and a landowner), and many years ago, when looking to purchase our current home we explored the whole Maori mortgage area.
  
  Money WAS available through Maori and Island Affairs (MAI), (and yes, it is that long ago), BUT the interest rate was well-above prevailing bank rates and also well above what was available through State Advances / Housing Corp.
  
  After doing the research, we got the very distinct impression that MAI were just going through the motions in respect of loans, that it was all for show, and that (metaphorically), a Limpet would be easier to remove from its rock!
  
  When the high MAI interest rate was queried the response was to the effect that it was set to cover the EXPECTED (OUR expected) loan default! Apparently such an occurance was not unknown!
  
  We went to the bank and Housing Corp (as it had by now become).
  
  Skin colour has nothing to do with it, ‘inside ‘ knowledge about Maori and money is all…
  
  The good doctor (if that is what she is) will, of course, deny such things.

  I know a very dark-skinned Indian bank manager. Would most probably not consider melanin levels any issue when applying for a mortgage, but look pretty hard at likelihood of repayment.
  
  The article should add the biggest hindrance: age. Try getting a mortgage in your 50s even if you’re on a reasonable income. Just try. You basically get told ‘sorry, you’re too likely to clag before you repay us’.
  
  How discriminatory, sniffle… But banks are a business and not a charity. Most of these things that Red Radio and articles like this whine about should be sorted out by charities if people care that much, not by laws and taxes.

Since the row over Don Brash being banned then un-banned from speaking at Massey University, race-based issues have appeared to have been sidelined. The issues remain, prompting Don to write in his regular column for South Auckland newspaper Elocal that “enough is enough”. Here is the article:

Maori seats entrenchment bill ‘nuts’
We now have a Bill before Parliament which would “entrench” the separate Maori electorates, meaning that, if passed, it would require a 75% majority of all Members of Parliament to scrap those electorates, almost certainly guaranteeing their continued existence for all time.

This is nuts. The Maori electorates were originally established for just five years in 1867 and gave all Maori men the vote, even if they owned no property. They should have been scrapped in 1879 when all men got the vote, or in 1893 when all adults got the vote. The Royal Commission on the Electoral System recommended in 1986 that they should be scrapped if New Zealand adopted MMP, and of course we’ve now had MMP for more than 20 years. A quarter of all Members of Parliament now have Maori ancestry, proving beyond a shadow of doubt that Maori are as capable of being elected to Parliament as anybody else. To suggest otherwise is patronising nonsense.

No Treaty basis for Ngai Tahu Representation Bill
There is another Bill in the works, sponsored by the Canterbury Regional Council, which would provide that there could be two appointed members of the Council from the local tribe, Ngai Tahu. That would mean appointed – not elected – tribal members making up some 14% of the Council, even though the 2013 census suggested that all Maori made up only 8% of Canterbury’s population, and one must assume that some of that 8% would not be Ngai Tahu. But why should there be any entitlement for tribal appointees on the Council? No other ethnic group has such an entitlement, and there is absolutely no suggestion in the Treaty that those who chance to have a Maori ancestor (always with ancestors of many other ethnicities also of course) should have an entitlement to local government representation in perpetuity.

Treatment of coastal claims unfair
There are some 600 claims by tribal groups for rights over the coastline, covering literally the entire coastline. Indeed, two of the claims are themselves for the entire coastline. The National Government assured the public, when the Marine and Coastal Area Act was passed in 2011, that it would be extremely rare for any claims to succeed because claimants would have to establish that they had had continuous and largely exclusive use of the relevant piece of coastline since 1840. And then they offered hundreds of thousands of dollars to each claimant to help them mount their claim. No financial assistance is offered to those who want to object to those claims and we have already seen instances of some very aggressive behaviour against those who “trespass” anywhere near coastal areas claimed by some Maori, even before claims have been settled.

Treaty indoctrination of imported teachers also ‘nuts’
The Government has made a big effort to recruit more teachers overseas to fill vacancies in our schools, only to have the teachers’ union argue that overseas teachers will need to undertake a year-long course in cultural competence to prepare them for teaching in New Zealand – which means, they will require indoctrination in Treaty mythology before they can be trusted in front of our children to teach maths or English or science. This again is nuts.

No partnership in Treaty
Recently, I came across a document issued by the Ministry of Justice entitled “Crown/Maori Relations: Summary of Submissions”. It summarised the reactions which Kelvin Davis, the Minister with responsibility for Crown/Maori relations, had got in touring the country to get views on how people saw the Crown/Maori relationship. But as Mr Davis made clear in the Foreword to the document he hadn’t really made any attempt at all to get the views of those without a Maori ancestor on this issue. He had, he said, had “20 hui in centres across the country and held 12 smaller focus group hui, engaging with around 1600 people kanohi ki te kanohi” (whatever that means).

He then claimed that the overwhelming feedback from “New Zealanders” was that they “do value the Crown/Maori relationship”. He expressed the hope that the relationship between Maori and the Crown could move from one focused on historical grievance to one focused on “true partnership”.

In the summary of the submissions it was noted that the “key theme of feedback was that the Crown/Maori relationship is underpinned and guided by the Treaty of Waitangi, which set up a partnership of equals”. This is, of course, unmitigated garbage, though no doubt certain Maori radicals and their Pakeha allies wish it were not.

There is absolutely nothing in the Treaty of Waitangi – in any version of it – suggesting that a relationship in the nature of a partnership of equals was envisaged by any of those who signed the document in 1840, and politicians as different as David Lange, Bill English and Winston Peters have made that point repeatedly. The idea that Queen Victoria saw herself entering into partnership with a group of mainly illiterate tribal chiefs, almost none of whom she had ever met, is quite literally absurd.

The obligatory few sentences in Maori ‘rude’
Though I hesitate to mention the Maori language again after all the trouble I got into earlier in the year when I complained about the increasing use of Maori on Radio New Zealand, I find it irksome – no, actually I find it rude – that at almost every occasion these days hosts feel obliged to invite some Maori man (always a man) to say a few sentences in Maori at the beginning of the affair, even though often there is not a single person in the audience who understands what is being said. I am trying to pluck up courage to call out: “Excuse me Mr Chairman, could we have a translation please?”

National and FIANZ and the NZ Police are actively looking to create hate speech laws protecting any criticism of Islam.
    
    The National Government in accordance with the edicts of the UN Migration Compact were doing EXACTLY as their puppet masters instructed them to do in accordance with the provisions set out in the Migration Compact.

1) If they also have a nanny while he’s off doing fishing shows then he’s hardly a stay at home parent.

2) Pulling the “doing it hard” card when they have a nanny etc is going to get very old with real parents who manage without nannies etc and this will backfire on them.

So the government coalition is down 5 points across the board and they are about to put through a capital gains tax and sign the UN Migration pact. Don’t think 4% is enough to kill off NZF, Peters is a renown shit stirrer so i would like to see them on 3% before i could say they have been written off. The Greens being on 5% are in more danger imo as they tend to fall short on election day.
Hopefully Bridges hammers home taxes, immigration and law and order. I think that will win him the next election. Labour are doing a great job at blowing themselves up over Social issues.

I was watching the TVNZ news last about 2 “assaults” at Hillmorton Hospital in Christchurch. It had already been circulated online that a nurse was stabbed there yesterday and a few days ago a nurse received severe burns when she had boiling water poured over her. It seemed to me that the Government through their media support at TVNZ were downplaying the seriousness of those incidents. I wonder why that is?

        But community service for home ivasion is patently a very weak sentence in actual fact its a joke and a scandal.

    While it’s true that white collar criminals get a fairly easy ride in NZ they don’t make an easy fit with the reasons for imprisonment, ie. retribution, deterrence, rehabilitation & incapacitation. The victims scream for retribution but the other factors are not predominant.
    
    Mind you, it is interesting to note that English law was originally set up to protect property rather than people.

Her views on migration, racial and sexual hysteria, and the rapid destruction of the American and Western societies is compulsory watching. She opines that America is now entering a real civil war.
