How about this as a thought.

“We’ve got a system that encourages competition and we think unhealthy competition,”Haque said. “That in our view is hugely damaging particularly for schools in disadvantaged communities.”

I have watched this perspective on life play out in England. Younger (by 12 years) brother in law went to a “no competition“ school. After not being good enough for six jobs he applied for, he was judged to be suffering PTSD and spent 11 years on benefits.

Our children and grandchildren need educating for the real world, not some dystopian dream where nobody stands out from the crowd from any perspective.

They don’t seem to realise that we can all be better off, if we make the effort; the only ones who then fall by the wayside are those who can’t be bothered.     Complete fallacy, of course.
    Plenty of people have worked their arses off, made honest mistakes or got greedy or been incompetent and fallen by the wayside, dragging other people down with them.
    Conversely there are plenty of people who have gone aimlessly through life doing the bare minimum and still having a pretty good lifestyle.
    Some people are not the brightest of sparks or their English ain’t too flash, but they might find a niche as a cleaner or whatever, which they tackle with enthusiasm. And there’s plenty of people around who object whenever someone suggests that people such as them might just deserve something better than minimum renumeration.

      No, it’s not fallacious: sure, there are many unbidden events that send people off track – either through their own ill-judgement or, as you suggest, someone else’s fault – but there are plenty of support mechanisms in place to help them climb back. It all comes down to motivation. It was my job, over forty years, to help such folk recover their lives, and it was sometimes staggering to see how, despite incredible adversity, some succeeded: these were the people who chose to make it. Others took a passive stance, and didn’t do well.
      Let me make it clear: a caring society should help those who can’t help themselves, but not those who won’t help themselves. It is the latter to whom I refer.
      Your point about some people coasting along, yet doing well, is irrelevant to that argument.
      As for the poorly-paid, that again is another issue. I agree that effort is not infrequently inadequately rewarded, because what tends to dictate remuneration is the crude rule of supply and demand. This is, as things currently stand, a fact of life. If you have some alternative, presumably superior scheme to suggest, I’d like to hear it – but the only one I can think of is a controlled economy, and that is a recipe for disaster.

    The lazy, stupid, and indifferent are those attracted to Labour because they’re promised an easy ride; indeed, they’re encouraged by the likes of Haque to resent the more motivated and talented amongst us. Left wing politics is inherently socially divisive.

      Politics is inherently socially divisive, which is why the two main NZ parties have drifted towards the centre; particularly since the instigation of MMP.
      Whatever you might want to believe the NZ public doesn’t care much for parties that stray too far to the left or right. ACT & the Conservative party have withered away and the Greens were lucky to survive the Metiria Turei fiasco.

        You have neatly contradicted yourself: if, as you claim, politics is inherently socially divisive, then this would flow from the polarised nature of the political ideologies being espoused. But, as you observe, there tends to be a drift towards the centre, and a rejection of fringe parties. The two major parties have far more in common than they have differences; sometimes, indeed, the so-called ‘left’ is actually to the ‘right’ of the other party – cf. the Douglas-era of Labour. Policy fields regularly overlap. Sure, there is the ‘tribal’ vote for both National and Labour, but it doesn’t necessarily follow that these supporters are radically at odds with each other.
        The Maori Party disappeared, I suggest, for the very fact that it was socially divisive, with its support of a ‘two state’ solution.

      Labour recognizes that many people do not start on an even playing field.
      Divorce or death can cause devastation to a kid’s chances of life.
      Labour is the party that has done something about this.
      They need to go further and acknowledge that there are actually more impediments to a young person’s chances that are less obvious, such as useless selfish parents who put their own needs before their children’s.

Grammar gets the same funding as a low decile schools and builds on it by asking parents for donations; this arrangement is to be prohibited under the new proposal.

    It’s not only traditional, strong schools that are opposed and resented by the Labour Party, whose core is now teachers and academics rather than the “working class”.
    
    A parent who showed interest in a fairly new independent school in Christchurch tells me the waiting list for kids to get in is bigger that its current roll.
    
    People want new types of schools, but the teacher unions hate them and block them wherever they can.

      We live in a suburb not previously favoured by the wealthier sector but over the last year homes are being snapped up by families so that they can afford to send their kids to private schools. Never has our suburb seen so many private school uniforms at the bus stops or rail station.

Heather du Plessis-Allan: Trevor Mallard is protecting Jacinda Ardern

Du Plessis-Allen says Mallard’s first big mistake was the Stupid Little Girl incident, where no one but Mallard apparently heard the claimed comment and it appears on no tapes, television or audio.
There’s the banning of photos of the Prime Minister and her daughter, when they may not be taken anyway.
Then Mallard has – inquired (twice) into the leaking of Bridges’ expenses and (once) into bullying in Parliament. All three inquiries generated negative news stories for National. That’s not flash for a supposedly impartial guy.

But she does miss mentioning the way Mallard often interrupts Bridges or deals with other trivial matters, giving Ardern time to think. That is a point Bridges himself makes.
And that would seem to actually be the more consistent favouritism Mallard displays.

      Simon Bridges has clearly “owned” the comment and has justified it by pointing out that while it may be a breach of house rules it needed to be clearly identified to the electorate.
      
      Mallard’s continual deflection of the onslaught that National are visiting on the coalition and the “Clayton’s” prime minister in particular is also a breach of the rules of the “house”.
      
      It’s just a shame that our pm is so bloody useless that she needs this “protection” from mallard.

    I thought it was a rubbish piece.
    It was very clear it was written under the instruction of “Mallard is bias so write an article”
    So she frames it as “he is a good guy”’ “ he likes babies (shudder)” etc to ensure that Trev knows that all is well between them …. nudge nudge – just doing my job.
    Then as Albert Ross points out, infers the walkout was a distraction away from the real story – Maggie Barry – when we all know the Barry story is the beatup of the year and a clear squirrel to take the heat off Labour over the Sroubek affair.
    Soper did it on the radio with Larry Williams on friday evening – he wanted the story to be Bridges contriving a parliament walkout to cover his poor polling. He is more interested in leadership spills and exclusives than holding this very corrupt government to account. As is his wife.
    The article from HDPA was written in the very reluctant and sycophantic way.

Why is it the female columnist and her husband seem to think that National has had a terrible year when our SLG and her associates have made such a mess of the year in power that it is always National who get the stick.
Talk about built in feminist prejudice – is it because Bridges is a normal family man (and married to his wife) and has normal children ?
He is not a radical lefty like the so called Government.
Must be horrible to be like these feminist reporters who look for something to say but not against the stuff ups of this so called Government.
Presumably it is possible that SLG has vacancies in her Department and they are looking for a job there.

        Commonsense would suggest this is over and above what is considered “normal” preschool behaviour. The child should have been isolated immediately. The children’s parents should have been spoken too. Asked if the children displayed this behaviour at home. If the parents refused to take any responsibility, the children should have been removed for the safety of all the other children but mainly for the child who was bitten.
        
        Otherwise you send a message that it’s okay for someone to physically harm you, because it’s just “normal” behaviour.

        UnPC or not. My youngest was repeatedly poked in the eye by another preschooler. He apparently had behavioural problems. Amazing how quickly that stopped when I told my son to poke the kid in the eye, back.
        
        This year, my foster child was repeated bullied by a much bigger girl who is suppose to have ADHD. Had the whanau conference shot. It continued. After being kicked, pushed off the monkey bars, teased and harassed, I told her to punch the girl in the nose hard.
        
        And she did, making it bleed. Funny enough, my foster girl was stood down for 2 days. But she is no longer bullied. And my foster girl no longer feels like a victim.

      Same thing happening in the UK. Unfortunately many Brits think NZ is how the UK used to be. A quick look at the stats would tell them otherwise but sadly many don’t stop to look. I’m a female in my later years but I have to say, at 22, I wouldn’t have travelled on my own, and when forced to, e.g. going home late from work, I knew to take care. Not blaming the victim here – everybody should be safe on the streets, but sadly both men and women need to be aware of the risks.

  OK, I went to Google to fact check my vague memory that the UK imported electricity from France when it was short. I got this:
  1. UK coal power generation has declined rapidly in recent years under the carbon tax.
  2. Most of the time, France sends electricity to the UK through 43-mile-long cables between Folkestone and a site near Calais, but in November (2017) there have been more hours when power has flowed in the other direction due to shutdowns of reactors following safety concerns.
  3. Essentially this means that France is importing higher carbon electricity than it can produce at home,
  4. The UK has pledged to phase out the country’s remaining coal power stations by 2025. This week it led the launch of an alliance of 19 nations, including New Zealand and Mexico, committed to quitting coal as quickly as possible.

Sounds like a complete shambles which will only get worse as the promised warming fails to materialise and the widely predicted solar minimum hits – something Russian scientists have been well aware of, hence their focus on achieving fuel independence in the last few decades.

A lower voting age?

The Head of Politics at the University of Cambridge has called for the voting age to be lowered to six in the wake of the EU referendum.

Professor David Runciman proposed a dramatic expansion of the franchise on his Talking Politics podcast, claiming it would help to correct what he described as a “huge structural imbalance” in favour of older Britons in the voting system.

“I would lower the voting age to six, not 16. And I’m serious about that,” he insisted, as most children are able to read by that age.

At 6 kids are wrapped in cotton wool, with zero real-world experience. At 16 most are still wrapped. Until kids have left the cloistered world of school, and have been left to deal with the consequences of their own decisions (ie life!) they shouldn’t have the vote.

I suggest Professor Runciman retires before making a fool of himself again.

    That is ageism directed at a hugely politically varied cohort of voters most of whom will have paid taxes all their working lives.

Stuff prints the views on the non-traditional Santa Claus in Nelson today then closes comments on the parade.

The writer was Oscar Kightley, who earlier in his life a stand-up comedian or similar.

Nelson’s Maori Santa Claus has been done to death. The reason Stuff has kept it alive so long must have been to give the fingers to the big slice of its readership that likes a traditional Santa Claus legend with the bearded old fellow at the North Pole with elves and a sleigh full of kids’ presents, and reindeer. The Christmas tree goes with the legend. A big slice of consumerism, with big retail spending has been nailed on to the legend, but the present, Leftist Stuff won’t much thought to its retail advertisers.

Nothing wrong with a brown, or black, or yellow face, but you needed the winter regalia to fit the traditional tale. But reshape it too much and it’s no longer the old legend. It’s a bit like commemorating Maui with a statue of him in a wet suit with a spear gun about to jump off a tinny.

This may be the last such trivia from Stuff. A decision is surely imminent on Stuff’s fate after the merger of its owner Fairfax Media Ltd with Nine Entertainment Co. Holdings (Fairfax ends up with 48.9 per cent).

One future for the NZ subsidiary might be breaking Stuff newspapers up into regional, locally owned publications, probably sooner rather than later with non-daily output.

Hopefully, that would curb the PC Leftism at present strong in Stuff.

On Friday evening, 07 December 2018, Israeli forces wounded 72 Palestinian civilians, including 11 children, 1 woman and 2 paramedics in the peaceful demonstrations in the eastern Gaza Strip despite the decreasing intensity of the demonstrations there for the sixth week consecutively and absence of most means usually used during the demonstrations since the beginning of the Return and Breaking the Siege March 7 months ago.

According to observations by PCHR’s fieldworkers, for the fifth week since the beginning of the Return March on 30 March 2018, the demonstrators abstained from burning tires while the attempts to cross the border fence and throw stones and incendiary balloons were completely absent.

Though the demonstrators were around tens of meters away from the border fence, the Israeli forces who stationed in sniper positions and military jeeps along the fence continued to use excessive force against the demonstrators by opening fire and firing teargas canisters at them, without the later posing any imminent threat or danger to the life of soldiers.

On 07 December 2018, the incidents were as follows:

At approximately 14:30, thousands of civilians, including women, children and entire families, started swarming to the five encampments established by the Supreme National Authority of Great March of Return and Breaking the Siege adjacent to the border fence with Israel in eastern Gaza Strip cities. Hundreds, including children and women, approached the border fence with Israel in front of each encampment and gathered tens of meters away from the main border fence. Further, setting fire to tires and throwing stones, incendiary balloons and Molotov cocktails were almost absent. The demonstrators gathered in areas open to the Israeli snipers stationed on the top of the sand berms and military watchtowers and inside and behind the military jeeps. Despite the prevailing calmness, the Israeli forces fired live and rubber bullets in addition to hundreds of teargas canisters, particularly in eastern Jabalia, Gaza and al-Bureij refugee camp. The Israeli shooting, which continued at around 17:00, resulted in the injury of 72 Palestinian civilians, including 11 child, 1 woman and 2 paramedics. The injury of 3 civilians, including a child, was reported serious. In addition, hundreds suffered tear gas inhalation and seizures due to tear gas canisters that were fired by the Israeli forces from the military jeeps and rifles in the eastern Gaza Strip. ….

Opinion: Government should not sign UN Migration Compact.

Next week, New Zealand is expected to sign the United Nations’ Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration. While it is non-binding, the protocol could still damage New Zealanders’ right to free speech and debate.

The Free Speech Coalition is indifferent on immigration policy matters; reasonable people can agree to disagree. However, the Government should not be signing an agreement that says it will seek to restrict free speech on immigration matters.

Objective 17 of the Compact looks to prevent critical speech of immigration policies in an attempt to combat xenophobia and racism. The problem with this is that many legitimate and genuine concerns about immigration are framed as ‘racist’ by some people. The Compact says that governments should defund media which report “intolerant” views. It goes further and says they should be denied “support”, which seems to mean the government should interfere with private funding. Almost any unwelcome truth can be termed “intolerant”, so the Compact will be a tool to suppress New Zealanders speaking their minds.

The Compact encourages signatory nations to “enact, implement or maintain legislation that penalizes hate crimes…”. The problem here is there is that common definitions of “hate crime” may extend to so called “hate speech” which can often mean “hearing truths we hate”. The Compact will therefore support interpretations of existing law that give authorities the power to suppress unpopular opinions and be used to claim that we must get new law to restrict unwelcome discussion of politically awkward or embarrassing information. The Compact will be used to claim that we must have such law to retain international respectability

Probably well-intentioned hate speech laws have been implemented in Sweden, Britain, and France. As they have worked out citizens have been prosecuted for merely speaking their mind or highlighting issues the authorities would rather not debate, or have debated.

FSC supports out traditional law against incitement of violence. The Compact says we must seek to go much further. FSC says New Zealand must remain free to have open frank debate about immigration. The Compact says the state should strongly promote one side of the argument and gag the other.

It is claimed that we should not worry because the Compact is not binding, only aspirational. It should not be an aspiration of New Zealand to align with forces that threaten free speech. Immigration is a core issue for nation states. In democracies like ours, there is a legitimate expectation that all sides can be heard on this complicated issue. This agreement says the state’s powers and resources should weigh in on one side, against the other.

The compact threatens the independence of our fourth estate. The Compact says the state must encourage ‘independent’ and ‘objective reporting’ on migration issues. It is easy to fear the opposite intention in a country where the media are presently independent without any coercive restrictions on objectivity. The Compact seems to mean the opposite. It calls for ‘sensitising’ and ‘educating’ reporters on terminology and appropriate message. State sanitising the fourth estate is dangerous to democracy, and not compatible with a free society.

The provisions seems to seek deplatforming of views inconsistent with the Compact’s view of objectivity, by defunding outlets which convey them. Given the pervasive role of government in our society, if the Compact justifies discrimination by all state connected advertisers against outlets that convey the side of a debate that the government considers to be not objective or helpful or tolerant, that could dramatically affect New Zealanders’ practical ability to seek and to impart views and information. Our current broadcasting regulations require “balance”. Will they be amended or reinterpreted to reflect a view that it need not extend to views unwelcome to the United Nations on immigration and immigrants?

    I tried a few years ago.

    When I wanted to engage re his good idea of flexible retirement age he never responded on 3 channels.
    They may wonder why they get no traction.

    He is trading under the ‘Conservative’ name but with the Colon Craig History that is silly.
    
    Apathy is the name of the game.
    National are not even opposed.
    Bridges agrees with most of what COL does.
    National will reverse nothing of what this COL shambles introduce.
    They never have in 40 years.

        1. Never leave your room after dark.
        2. Never go anywhere without lots of families in close proximity.
        3.If a male starts to follow you, head for a crowded shop and try and lose him.
        4. If you do have to walk past a group of males after dark, put on your meanest face and glare at the ground to deter unwanted contact.
        5. Only use public loos in busy shopping centres.
        6. Never walk through parks or school grounds or quiet areas.
        Worked for me as a young ‘un.
