So the media are describing Arderns performance in Waitangi as a “Success”.

I’m sorry? I suppose if you mean not being pelted with Mud or Sex Toys, you could regard it as such, but in all honesty, other than staffing the BBQ at Breakfast (The only job her background qualifies her for) what did she actually achieve?

If the measure for success is a 100 million dollar peace offering to appease the natives in the hope of a quiet Waitangi event, then the media is setting their sights far too low.

  TV news showed some “elder” , Sonny Tau, I think it was , being very rude on the podium about more work to be done over her not knowing Ti Tiririririrrititittiti, chapter and verse.
  
  No matter what honkey pollies “do for Maoris” it will never be enough .
  
  There will never be an end to moaning from some sectors of Maoridom , and no end to the giveaways by most sectors of our political class.
  
  PS I didn’t see the national flag on display on the bridge , only the Maori ones . Don’t they think the nation important enough ?

    Some very apposite articles on NZCPR site about the Treaty, the faux partnership, constitutional change by stealth, and the gravely dangerous direction we are being pushed in. Muriel Newman quotes a 2000 speech by David Lange in which he decries the artificial prominence the Treaty has gained at the hands of some activists, and the self-perpetuating legal and academic industry it has spawned.

    You are correct – no matter that National spent $100’s of millions of taxpayer money and provided leadership and opportunity for Maori to become self determining and successful – at the 2017 elections, Maori voters said fugh you, and gave all their votes to the biggest pork barrel on offer.

  There appears to be some large discrepancies as to the numbers at Waitangi from thousands to tens of thousands dependent where your read it (eg NZME)
  Others there say that it it did not have the gravitas as other years and was the usual grievance show, which is why people did not go in the numbers they have done.
  There were many better days holiday elsewhere eg Porirua.

  Of course the media are describing Arderns performance in Waitangi as a “Success” …. the Labour Party have cynically staged managed her public appearance by ensuring Jacinda appears at the Upper Marae, where it is peaceful and there is no argy-bargy!
  
  All the argy-bargy mud-flinging, shouting and protests happen at the Lower (Te Tii) Marae, which is where traditionally PM’s and MP’s gathered (and including Don Brash on Tuesday, where he was shouted down …. perhaps he should ask to speak at the Upper Marae next time)!
  
  Jacinda asks Maori to hold her and her Govt to account when at Waitangi. If Jacinda and the Labour Party were being honest about this (cough, cough) then the PM should be prepared to appear at the Lower (Te Tii) Marae next year and converse with the radical elements in attendance.
  
  After all it is unlikely the radical elements would get worked up over Jacinda (eg compared to National PM’s)!
  
  But betcha Jacinda and the Labour Party don’t have the guts to do so, unlike previous Prime Ministers!

    In the Tauranga and coastal BOP Region there are a number of Indian cricket teams, many of whom play near us – they are very good and talking to some of them I suggested that we have an Indian New Zealand Cricket team – like a Maori something team – they liked the idea.

      Why should income increase over inflation if productivity is the same.
      
      Federal debt, international debt, NZ debt (government and private/corporate) are all higher as a percentage of GDP. The coalition will make a severe impact on NZ over the next 2 years.
      
      Life expectancy will diminish as modern lifestyles and eating habits take their toll.
      
      Stop looking at the negatives, it will kill you quickly and thus prove the diminishing life expectancy argument.

    A very high tax rate particularly hurts creative and artistic people with ‘lumpy’ income. They could pay at 90% one year but have very low income the next year.
    J R R Tolkien and James Herriot (Alf Wight) received the bulk of their royalties over short periods and were stung with a tax rate of 19/6d in the pound (95%) as it then was in the UK on much of that. J R R Tolkien was forced to sell the movie rights to his books for a very small amount to pay his tax bill.
    Tax rates were so punitive that the government at the time had to allow or tolerate exemptions and deductions all over the place to stop businesses going under.

      It was particularly fun to see their contortions over what they would or would not cheer for. For example, when Trump was stating that congress needed to help eliminate sex traffickers, Democrat presidential candidate wanna, Kamala Harris, was vigorously shaking her head “NO!” and the rest of her cohorts refused to acknowledge this was a good idea either.
      
      In conclusion, being a Democrat means being pro-sex trafficking.

    The lure of “disrupting” what remains of the unadulterated food supply (meat, dairy, fish, eggs) is an appealing proposition for start-up alternative protein companies and incumbent food industry giants.
    
    The profitability of taking what should only be considered livestock feedstuffs, and processing this into human-consumable products, is an extremely lucrative business.
    
    At the time of writing, a 415-gram box of “Nestle Shreddies Cereal” (96% whole grain wheat) can be purchased at the UK supermarket Sainsbury’s for £2.15 or £0.52/100g (a retail price per tonne of £5,200).
    
    Currently, the spot UK milling wheat price is approximately £180/tonne.
    
    A back of the envelope calculation indicates a mark-up of 2,788%. Although I am not familiar with the detailed economics of breakfast cereal processing, one can assume the margins will be at least several hundred percent – after packaging, transportation, and the processor’s margin is accounted for.
    
    Whereas beef processing margins (after all costs), as an industry norm, are “in very low single digit percentages” – according to Tom Kirwan (CEO of ABP, a leading UK and Irish beef processor).
    
    Given these indisputable facts, it is easy to see why Cargill and Tyson Foods (established animal protein processors) are keen to invest in alternative protein companies.

  The silly leak of those expenses, to be officially released just a day or two later, was to blow most-likely suspect Jami-Lee Ross out of the water, not Bridges, and was probably either the jilted MP lover (the leak being two days after her nasty text, “out of the blue” since the relationship supposedly ended in May) or the RNZ reporter, who figures strongly in the PriceWaterHouse report.

        As far as I know, Caucus or some committee would have this in hand. Question slots are allocated to parties (AFAIK in portion to number of non-minister MP’s in the party), not individuals so it is up to the party to decide who asks what.Usually the MP who has done the research gets to ask the question as the MP has the background info to fire off the supplementaries with precision. Depending on the ‘catch’ the MP could be given another slot at next QT.
        An opposition MP who performs well with research and with questions is heading the right way towards a better list ranking at the next election and more responsibilities eg select committee chair, whip, under secretary, etc.

An OI Request by Forest & Bird to MPI has furnished a letter from the leaders of the fishing industry telling MPI how opposed they are to cameras on fishing vessels. This letter was written at the same time the industry was advertising heavily on TV last year as to what good stewards of the sea they are. As was highlighted by Russel Norman (someone whose politics I do not agree with) the fishing industry are after more quota before they’ll discuss cameras on boats.

Does the fishing industry not get it, if you over fish the available stock today, there is no fish tomorrow? Just ask East Coast Canadians if cod stocks have ever recovered after they were wiped out by indiscriminate fishing in the 1990s!

If today’s fisherman want an industry tomorrow, they need to look at their leadership!

  The industry’s attitude is the similar to Telecom’s attitude when it was initially privatised.
  The industry can optimise its wealth by fishing aggressively and who cares if things are fished out in 20 years time. This is because money has time value and the extra money made now can be invested in other enterprises in the future, the Rutherford Hotel in Nelson (owned by the Talleys AFAIK) being a good example.
  Similarly Rodrick Deane in Telecom recognised there was a decent window of opportunity to make big profits out of it by making things difficult for competition before bureaucratic regulators caught up with them.

I was listening to a global warming presentation the other day and they feigned shock while telling us we had the highest carbon footprint of any country, if you look at a per capita basis. I asked how this could be when we generate 85% of our electricity with renewable. Apparently its because we are the only country to include agriculture in our calculations.

I have several issues with this:
– how can we compare countries outputs if we all use different data
– If we’re using per capita then all we have to do is have more people
– Agriculture can only be a problem if methane is proven to be a problem. I havent seen one of those easy to understand graphs that Mr Gore trucks out that tries to link methane with temperature rise. Also, do they measure methane in the ice cores?

Most likely the answer is the fact the politicians want to impose a carbon tax, and since we have so much “clean” energy they need to tax something else. Therefore start taxing cows instead.

  Not only do we overstate our emissions as you have noted, but the developed Northern Hemisphere countries of Europe and America have moved much of their generation of emissions off shore by basing manufacturing in Africa, Asia and Indian Ocean island nations. Many of the factories used in the clothing and footwear sectors are inefficient, using old equipment and plentifully avaialable cheap labour. Then you have the carbon footprint of transporting finished goods to market. None of which is counted properly.
  So, the Global Warming evangalists have no credibility in what they are pedalling in order to support this rort of an industry.

  I think the real reason NZ includes agriculture is because if it was not in we would NOT have an emissions problem using the way the rest of the world calculates them. There is no way NZ could be seen as an outlier.
  The rest of the world do not include agriculture because politically, farmers are a “protected species” in most developed countries. The scam reeks of hypocrisy from end to end.

  That is incorrect. All countries include agriculture in their greenhouse emissions inventories. There is standard reporting under the UNFCCC.
  
  However New Zealand’s agriculture emissions account for about 50 percent of our total. This compares to about 15 percent on average in other developed countries.
  
  I don’t know how we stack up on a per capita basis. I would have thought we were behind Australia.
  
  Apart from agriculture, the only material way we can reduce emissions is in transport. That is difficult. It would require people to buy newer and more efficient cars. However people buy cars according to income. I don’t see many 1998 corollas in Australia. Lots here though.

Received a txt from the neighbors….”hangi at our whare for lunch ?” Andre & Lorelei really are a lovely couple. They only arrived here from Joberg about 3 years ago.

When we went over they’d both put on blackface for the occasion. Andre had dug a ‘hangi pit’ in the backyard. Come time to eat, he removed the sack off the top and pulled out a large Esky. It was stacked full of warm Lion Brown and cold Big Ben Pies still in their cellophane wrappers. Well, fuck me, talk about laugh!!

When we got back home later in the afternoon, the missus said, “How bloody embarrassing was that? We were born in this country….yet those South Africans know more about Maori culture and tradition than we do”

        The center of Rome was rotting at that time, elderly and poorly built apartment blocks often collapsed causing lots of deaths. The fire did a great job of clearing out most of this stuff, and left lots of space that Nero enthusiastically used for palaces, lakes and gardens. Not all of his building was self centered, the replacement of buildings was done with better materials and standards, so much so that Nero has been labelled by some as the saviour of Rome.
        I put no credence on blaming dissident Christians. No motive, no payoff lots of risk and lots of punishment.
        As far as Nero being absent, well nobody was saying he ran around the city and lit the fires himself, he was Emperor and had plenty of lackeys to do his bidding.
        He had motive (rebuild, land grab) and the means. His treatment of the Christians showed a sadistic and ruthless character that makes him a viable candidate.
        Meanwhile, there is nothing in the documented actions of tge Christians of that period that gives resl credence to your theory,

  I think this will be her first appearance at a natural disaster type event (previously other MP’s have showed up including Green leader James Shaw), took a while didn’t it!
  
  Expect to see serious face put on with head tilting to the side, in solidarity with the locals. Maybe she could fit in a couple of kindy visits and read stories to the worried children?
  
  Then perhaps a couple of hours afterwards she can hang out Nelson local ex-Labour MP Maryan Street for the afternoon, sipping Chardonnay in the sunshine together and extend her holiday a little more? 😉

I suspect the TWG recommendations will be the final nail in the COL coffin. Labour/Greens have to instigate a comprehensive CGT to keep any credibility. Winston knows this will lose him his voting base as it will impact them heavily.
The shit fight will mean either Lab/Greens win and NZF loses or NZF wins and Lab/Greens lose.

Either way it has the ability to weaken the COL and cause the MSM to further turn on the COL.

The MSM aint stupid all the time. They sniff the wind and see how its blowing and now understand a significant number of citizens are pissed off with the COL.

The MSM doesn’t like being on the losing side so they will continue to show up the COL faults and weaken their re-election prospects.

I also suspect Cindy is getting to meltdown point. No amount of minding and protection can shield her from the realities of the PMs role.

It would be no surprise that sometime before the next election she announces the long wanted UN job having being jacked up for her by H1 and H2 so she can exit with some show of dignity.

The question is who will replace her?

Even in the USA there are often voting irregularities in Florida etc.

Waitangi report coverThe irony of all this spending – mostly aimed at the Māori elite – is the fact that Māori smokers, generally the poorest of the poor, are paying far more per year in tobacco excise tax, than the total Government spends on Māori development and Treaty Settlements.

On Tuesday we released our research note on the subject, Ka Tukuna Atu, Ka Tukuna Mai: How the Government gives from one hand, takes with the other.

The Government annually takes $120 million more from Māori via tobacco excise than it gives in Treaty Settlements and Māori Development funding.

When calculated as a proportion of income, New Zealand charges smokers the most punitive tobacco tax rate in the developed world. Despite that, Māori smoking rates are stubborn. Counterintuitively, it is the poorest communities which are being the least responsive to recent tax hikes.

There is increasing evidence to suggest that smokeless tobacco products like snus and heat-not-burn are far less harmful than cigarettes, and are much better at getting people to quit smoking.

Using tobacco tax revenue to fund Waitangi spend-ups just transfers wealth from low-income Māori families to politically-connected iwi leadership. Worse still, it appears that while the Government cries crocodile tears about Māori smoking rates, its addiction to tax revenue sees it dragging the chain on making safer alternatives, successfully used overseas to get smokers to quit, more available.

Keeping Stock

SWMBO and myself had a wonderful time at Government House yesterday. There was a huge turnout, Dame Patsy gave an excellent speech, and the catering exceeded expectations. I bumped into a few MP’s, caught up with a bloke I haven’t seen for 30 years, and met a fellow opponent of the current government with whom I have engaged on social media since 2008, and last night we dined with a friend at the Green Parrot.

All in all, a very enjoyable and memorable day, and the GG’s choice of Garage Project beer was first class.

  The kid’s parents have retained their own surnames, Berto & Trump, and for whatever reason have burdened the poor child with the latter.

      Food wise I’m also quietly confident he will scrape by without a scooter.

  The ABC 60 Minit report is a real worry Mr Paveletich! Particularly where it shows those poor Chinese Students jumping to their death from the window of a defective apartment building in Melbourne. There must be a lot of very very worried people here in Aucland who have bought apartments off the plans and now see what has happened over the ditch. While he was in town sup[ping on our wine and crayfish Leech Galloway went visiting Wanganui with a little surprise.

Whanganui is set to start welcoming more than 100 refugees each year as new residents of the city.

Immigration Minister Iain Lees-Galloway was in Whanganui on Thursday to announce the city would be one of five new refugee settlement locations around New Zealand.

Last year New Zealand’s refugee quota was increased from 750 annually to 1000 and this will increase to 1500 in 2020.

Lees-Galloway said Whanganui was “growing from strength to strength” and refugee resettlement would help support such growth.

“We all know the primary reason for welcoming refugees is humanitarian but the research shows that there are economic and social benefits to accepting refugees as well,” he said.

Lees-Galloway told the Chronicle refugees would start to be introduced to Whanganui in March 2020 and would scale up to 3-5 families every six-eight weeks.

Immigration NZ has stood by its decision to kick out of the country a Ukrainian family, at the same time as Minister of Immigration Lees-Galloway announces a new immigration strategy that will see refugees settled in W(h)anganui, Timaru, Blenheim, Masterton and Levin.

Last Friday, Lees-Galloway was talking up the online facility which makes it easier for foreigners to apply for visas. He described as a milestone, the number of foreigners applying online for student, work, and visitor visas.

His comment then included :

“Thanks to Immigration ONLINE, over 85 per cent of all visa types can be made digitally, with most online applications coming from China and India.”

A week before Christmas, Lees-Galloway announced changes to make it easier for regions to import foreign workers.

Judas Peters must have given Labour and the Greens the kiss to go ahead with their move to make NZ more accessible to low-price labour.

And it’s 20 months to the next election …

You’ve got to laugh. I was reading a thread on Facebook about the disastrous kiwi build programme. It refered to an article in the Listener. All these “special” lefties were saying they don’t buy the listener because it is too right wing. Did you ever hear anything so ridiculous? I venture to suggest they don’t buy it because it is too high brow for them. If they knew how left wing it was they might buy it.

Of course, being a sensible sort of man, I’ve never taken much interest in all this jigaboo shit. Mount Egmont is still the same as it always was. Just like Somes and Ward Islands.
Funnily enough Mount Cook still looks re markedly the same as it always has since the avalanche.
I’m planning a trip to Stewart Island but it seems to have changed its name recently. I’m almost certain it will still be the same shape and the pakeha maps will still apply! 🙂

Friday night drinks at my Club. Chatting with a couple of solo mothers. One of them had used the delightful euphemism;
“I’m going for a job interview”
Apparently that is a euphemism for I am going on a first date with somebody I met on Tinder. Her boss was alarmed to hear that a valued employee was going on a job interview, but once she was acquainted with the new terminology, she was very helpful with friendly advice to the young woman.
Anyway, this is a political blog so I was enthralled to hear their objections to Jacinda. Jacinda had yesterday promised the Maori $100,000,000. Today she offered the victims of the dreadful Nelson District fires $20,000. When I explained to them, and I did it slowly, that five times $20,000 is $100,000 and that ten times $100,000 is $1,000,000 and 100 times $1mil is $100mil. So; 5 times 10 times 100 is 5000. That is, she had offered the Maori 5000 times more than she had offered the victims of the Nelson fires.
This set them off. These young women are a crucial part of Jacinda’s constituency. They have just found out what matters to Jacinda. They are ropeable.
Would somebody here, who has the ear of Jacinda, please carefully advise her that she must not, in any way whatsoever, defaecate upon her primary constituency. There is no future in that sort of behaviour.

Pocahontas – Senator Elizabeth Warren – finds her false claims to be an American Indian won’t go away.

The Washington Post reports that when she was a law professor in Texas, she wrote on a a registration form from the state bar, that her race was “American Indian”.

The newspaper reports:

“The matter now threatens to overshadow the image Warren has sought to foster of a truth-telling consumer advocate who would campaign for the White House as a champion for the working class. Instead, she is now seeking to combat the portrait of someone who for years was insufficiently sensitive to a long-oppressed minority. The matter also is arising at a time when issues of racial and cultural identity are increasingly sensitive in the Democratic Party.”

It’s fashionable in the United States to be an American Indian. Watch the You Tube videos of people opening their DNA reports from genealogy sites like Ancestry. Often when African Americans open their reports they are disappointed to find no Indian link.
