    I was asked recently what it meant to me on Waitangi Day. I replied it made me think about my father who served in the Royal New Zealand Navy during WWII, my grandfather who fought in Samoa and the Western Front during WWI and my great uncle who was killed on the Somme in September 1916. Their service was not just about doing their duty to our Sovereign, it was about standing up and proving ourselves as a nation in our own right. When asked what the Treaty of Waitangi meant to me, my answer was “nothing”. The Treaty was for the benefit of Maori.. it gave them Sovereignty, property rights and citisenship.. things many in the world are desperate for today and I already had then. The Treaty was not for the benefit of Europeans, most of whom had escaped their own killing fields horror.. in my families case as Lowlanders in Scotland suffering the slaughter of our families by the invading English.
    Our ancestors like most escaped and moved to a better place to establish a new identity, something my parents and grandparents were prepared to sacrifice their lives for.
    It seems to me the current grievance climate seems to ignore that most if not all of our families have suffered. We are trying to build a successful community and country but because of the luxury of democracy and free speech, every grievance and societal winge group has hijacked policy and social debate.
    History suggests the grievance and social warrior groups will fail but they may do some damage before their demise.

      As an addendum to my post to explain “damage”.. it’s a well documented fact that global societies have gravitated betweeen capitalist and socialist/communist/fascist poles. Capitalism is not perfect but in the words of Winston Churchill it’s the best of a short list, of words to that effect.
      Capitalism allows the creation of wealth but for those who can’t/don’t produce it, it creates an equality grievance. Eventually the imbalance becomes so great we have a change as the political axis swings left. This is where we are now. This phase can last many years until bankruptcy or war eventuates.
      The problem with socialism/nationalism/command economies is they don’t allow competition, dissection, freedom of thought. Without natural competition and incentives (pay offs) to think outside the square, there is no innovation. Without innovation, there is no productive growth. This is why some prefer to steal others ideas/technology or blatantly lie Gain economic and political advantage..

Jacinda ‘absoludely pwomised’ she was going to get the suicide rate down to zero.
What has she actually done? This issue certainly seems to have slipped off her radar…(Protecting Czech Drug Dealers is clearly way,way more important..)

*An old friend from University took his life during the week- Talking about it with friends reminded me of how heavily Labour politicised this dreadful issue during the Election, and how it has been pretty much forgotten again now…

      There is the link. Ardern is a master at doublespeak. She skirts around actual commitments and always sounds as if she’s promising something, but she leaves herself outs and the means to deflect from it.
      
      A reasonable person would walk away from her speech thinking she was aiming for zero as a target. You’d know it was unachievable, but you’d also know from her speech that Labour was going to do everything for mental health they could. It was going to be a “focus”.
      
      And hey, it has been a focus. Until the election. Then it was lost amongst the bribes for more votes for next election.

        The very first 2 sentences from that article state:

        But I hate to admit this, Psycho is kinda right in a way… like every other dog shit they roll in glitter, no promise is ever actually made. Someone (can’t remember if it was you) made a claim about Little with no link provided (from memory, that as Leader of the Opposition he’d expressed opinions on what Pharmac should subsidise or not subsidise, as Key had done in 2008 over Herceptin). I said I didn’t recall that, and you provided a link. That’s it, all sorted, everything working like it’s supposed to.

        Defend the COL ‘almost’ promises by pointing out they never commit to anything like zero suicides or zero road toll….they just virtue signal in the direction of the issues, play with peoples emotions about the issues and then they scurry away having committed to nothing and done nothing…. sorrrrrrry they do do something – they form working groups and throw taxpayers money at unmeasurable initiatives and then scurry away….because spending other peoples money IS caring (achieving shit is for nasty righties after all, its spending other peoples money and sticking it to Rich pricks that really counts)
        
        Or even better they commit to a target – e.g. Kiwibuild – but ‘re-calibrate’ the target to be ‘aspirational’ when interim milestone measures on the way to the ultimate goal get inconveniently talked about as the those interim milestone measures are missed…
        
        Your choice of Governing Parties are pretty rubbish Milt…..and they have declining credibility when it comes to measurable success.

‘Fairer’ tax system. Fairer for who? Will it be fairer for middle NZ that slog their guts out to pay the mortgage and provide for the kids? Or fairer for those that have no incentive to contribute to society and just want more free stuff?

They say a insider from the retreat has given the information and that Bridges said that he could not trust Winston or likely work with him, so is this another of Three’s tactics to bring down Bridges or is it just to create animosity between the Leader who do not like each other.

NZ First’s true power lies in coalition negotiations after an election – Matthew Hooton

So Winston needs to detach and disassociate himself from Labour policy – from the failed Kiwibuild: cited in the New York Times for only managing to build 47 houses – and the NYT wasn’t aware of the 60 empty houses due to be bulldozed for new roads or state housing redevelopment in Pakuranga and Mount Roskill.
Winston will need to pretend he didn’t sign the UN Compact on Migration (Oops! sorry, core NZ First voters!), nor have anything to do with the incoming capital gains tax, which Labour wants while Peters is vehemently opposed to, although such a tax is already damned by experts as not allowing sufficient time to even be properly designed.
Or the biggie: that Winston, to get his paranoid waka-jumping bill passed, horse-traded off future natural gas exploration to the hated Greens without consulting Cabinet or really … anyone else.

Winston can’t actually divorce himself from Shane’s mis-calculations with trees, because it is Shane’s pork barrel regional fund that might buy a Northland Electorate seat for New Zealand First – if Shane can get the cuzzies off their couches to vote, but Winston will soon need a pretence again of neutrality –
Winston requires both Labour and National to at least perceive that [he] is open to the best offer from either side. says Hooton.
Really, Matthew? Surely all politicians recognise policy doesn’t matter to Winston, but power and appearance do.

What is vital though is that Winston needs to convince enough voters that he can again be the impartial “king-maker” dedicated to making the best deal in the interests of New Zealand first – and forgetting the fucking failure this current coalition, chosen by him, actually is.

It was just before the last Election that juvenile Jacinda realised she was proposing a farm water tax without saying whether it would be one cent or two cents a cubic metre.
Jacinda suddenly realised she couldn’t ask people to vote for anything unknown and hastily pushed everything sideways into the working tax committee that is about to deliver a capital gains tax, bless them.
That left those people bold enough to vote for the greater unknown, to vote for Winston.
That’s those voters who gave Winston their vote, for him to decide what should be done with it.
Now that they have seen what he did with their vote, hopefully it will harder for him to pull the same stunt off again, however much he manages to divorce himself from Labour … and the Greens.

Hopefully National will stymie this dishonest divorce
Simon Bridges should tell Winston that Winston’s track record damns him
Having made his vows with Labour, Winston’s behaviour is inappropriate for a married Member of Parliament, and National will not be a future coalition partner.

Simon should burn Winston’s bridges for him.

For just one simple example of working with Winston, consider Winston’s compassion as he gloated in pointing out National could not find the mentally un-well National Member sitting opposite him.

Breaking news: National are discussing right now whether to dump any prospect of working with Winston, before he drops them. Would that not leave Winston for the rest of his term displaying his real colours?

  Simon should not burn bridges now since it leaves Winston in an uncertain position. He should leave this until within a few weeks of next election so that Winston and Jacinda (if still around) have to campaign on the basis that either eventuality could occur.
  As I have said previously – the overarching objective of a political party is to get into power and if in power to stay in power. So it is no surprise that National’s recent all day caucus would have this high on the agenda.

Noticed recently how more and more government funding and participation initiatives aimed towards Maori also seems to have Pasifika people attached as though they also hold some “special” status in New Zealand which we must cater too.
Given they only arrived as immigrants in the last 40 years or so giving them special recognition over other residents of NZ seems completely wrong.
Being so called disadvantaged because you are poor and uneducated does not justify preferential treatment over others.
One might be tempted to label it racist.

    If, for example, Winston will now agree with National that it was utterly bizarre to ban gas exploration without a shred of research or consultation – if he can make a judgement mistake as large as that – why would National work with such a fool?

As shameful as the tweet was, it’s worth following the link to see the absolute kicking Greenpeace is getting from respondents for their blatant politicisation of the Nelson fires.

Greenpeace needs to understand that it’s February, traditionally our hottest and driest month, and a month in which fires have been a feature ever since I was a child sixty years ago. They do their cause no good whatsoever with cheap stunts like this, when people right now are in significant hardship and worry about their properties and livelihoods.

  The problem as pointed out is Nelson gets very dry in summer , if you want to avoid forest fires then don’t plant forests , or at least not near where anyone lives.or vice versa don’t have houses in said areas.
  
  Same issue in California. They ‘ve had those bush fires forever , some really huge ones in the past .But they really become a problem when humans decide to build in areas prone to bush fires. Same in Oz.
  
  But everyone wants to live in the bush , away from it all , surrounded by bird song etc
  
  Fair enough , but there are consequences and it has nothing to do with global warming.

    I seem to remember the green party advocating that windfall trees should be left in the West coast to rot. Seems to me that the current fire near me was mostly caused by what was on the ground ,not living trees. Nice land, well irrigated instead of Native bush would reduce the fore hazard as would lots of dams so dry land could be irrigated!

  My mother was born in Nelson in 1914 and she lived there most of her life. Her forebears arrived in 1853.
  All that time it was hot in summer and cold in winter.
  Sometimes there was torrential rain, sometimes droughts.
  There were/are unseasonal frosts in summer and warmth in winter.
  There were fires occasionally in town and in country. Rivers and seas caused floods from time to to time.

Why shouldn’t candidates who offer themselves for local body or general elections not be required to undertake a psyc test with the results forming part of their CV for electors to determine whether they are worthy candidates.
After all its standard practise in senior employment.

Every time Ive employed a senior manager they have required to undergo such tests to check their capability.

“Marlborough Roads journey manager Steve Murrin said the council agreed to trial the speed bump to help bring cyclists and motorists to the same speed.

The council found a recent switch in priorities, made in September, was tempting motorists to exceed the 30kmh speed limit along Beaver Rd, putting cyclists at risk.”

I know common sense is a tree that doesn’t grow in every garden, but seriously… Most urban roads have a speed limit (or target, as the max speed determined safe to travel at) of 50-60km/h, why should motorists be forced to slow down to a crawl to match cyclists speeds? (especially now they have their own fancy schmancy cycleway separated from the actual road…?!?)

  Actually Marlborough Roads is a fairly robust and efficient outfit.
  Only problem is (in common with most other local body councils) it is in the thrall of the cycling lobby.
  One must dare not upset the cyclists. They must be listened to and preferably worshipped as the enlightened ones.
  Ordinary rate paying citizens who want to drive round the streets and maybe park their cars outside their houses or businesses are living in the dark ages.

If there was anything positive for me last week, it’s that I managed to miss the World Economic Forum completely.

In Davos, Switzerland — coincidentally just around the corner from where my grandfather lived in Geneva — the world’s elite came together to clink glasses and eat fondue…under the pretense of bringing the world’s most pressing issues to light.

This year, the topic was ‘Globalization 4.0: Shaping a New Architecture in the Age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution’

In attendance were about 2,500 well-established academics, wealthy businesspeople, powerful politicians, and famous celebrities.

Nassim Taleb, the guy who came up with the black-swan idea, nailed it when he told Bloomberg that World Economic Forum is really ‘chasing successful people who want to be seen with other successful people. That’s the game.’

Fun fact: each attendee pays over US$600,000 to attend.

Worth the money?

Not a chance.

You see, the idea behind the forum is something you can probably get behind — gather all the world’s big decision-makers together to make positive changes for humankind.

But, unfortunately, there’s lots of talking about big changes…and not so much implementing those big changes. Rather, as Taleb described, it’s more of a pissing contest for the rich and powerful.
We need to know more about the costs of this piss up to NZ Tax payers.

I just answered a political survey. I do not know who it is for.

I was asked who I voted for to which I said NZF. I was then asked who I would vote for if an election was held tomorrow to which I answered National. If this was done for NZF or Labour they will be worried. I suspect it was for Labour as they just asked my view of Bridges and Ardern.

I was asked why I did not like Ardern and my first response was that she is a communist. I then added she has personal friends that are criminals. I named Sweeny the convicted fraudster and Richie Hardcore. Maybe I should not have mentioned Hardcore as he has not been convicted of anything.

I missed out saying she is a pathological liar.

I am sure there will be more like me and NZF will be around 3% in early 2020.

KiwiBuild homes that did not sell in the ballot in Wanaka are now being offered to the public.

It was reported in November that three of the 10 offered for sale in the Northlake development had gone to buyers drawn from the KiwiBuild ballot.

A refugee-led NGO is unhappy the government chose not to consult them on the new resettlement areas, which they say could be detrimental to refugees settling into life in New Zealand.

The ChangeMakers Resettlement Forum believes Whanganui, Timaru, Blenheim, Masterton, Levin and Christchurch might not have the support network or relevant jobs for the refugees who arrive in New Zealand.

Winston Peters pushes strongly against Australian deportation of NZers

Australia deporting people to New Zealand with little or no connection to this country is illogical, unfair, and in some cases indefensible, Foreign Minister Winston Peters says. And he says that Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne, with whom he just had a bilateral meeting, will raise the issue with the highest levels of power in Australia, including Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

Australia has a federal election coming up. This is hardly going to be an issue at the forefront of Scott Morrison’s mind.

The issue is likely to be revisited when Morrison meets Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who has also raised this matter, later this month.

I guess Jacinda will repeat her request – more forcefully than last time – for Scott to let us take some of the Manus Island refugees.

  What would be more useful is if he explicitly told the refugee representative group that they don’t make the rules on where their members settle or what tax payer funded remuneration they get. If they don’t like Timaru, or Whanganui, or Palmerston North or Invercargill etc they had better have a pretty good reason to tell the locals of those cities why they are not good enough for desperate refugees.. I read Jacinda’s speech earlier today and have been reflecting on these comments:

Yes, we have received the report of the Tax Working Group and, as we have shared publicly, it will be released on Thursday 21 February. That report is now being pored over by officials, and discussed with Coalition and Confidence and Supply partners. Our plan is for the Finance and Revenue ministers to release the Coalition Government’s full response to the report in April.

Importantly though, the Working Group’s report will be shared with the public. There will be time for everyone to see that work, to debate what they have said and to share views. Anything we subsequently decide will also go through a consultation process before legislation and ultimately will be put to voters at the next election before it comes into force.

My question: why can’t the report be published now? I can think of one or two cases where a government minister received a report, it was published immediately, and then the government provided a formal response within a few weeks or months. It seems to me that there’s no reason why the report can’t be published now, on the understanding that the government and its coalition partners are given time to digest the report and decide which parts (if any) they’ll support.

In a major step forward for kids’ health, the Government has announced it will ban smoking in cars with children – and police could fine those who don’t obey.

Under the law change, announced on Sunday, police will be able to require people to stop smoking in their cars if children (under 18) are present. Police will also be able to give warnings, refer people to stop-smoking support services, or issue an infringement fee of $50.

A Florida Republican has introduced a bill that is supposed to hold Democrats AND Republicans accountable for lying to Congress or the FBI.

So far, only Republicans have been held to account. We’ve had instances of Dems lying (Hillary Clinton, James Clapper, James Comey, Andrew McCabe, Lois Lerner, Eric Holder, John Brennan etc) and they’ve got off with no punishment whatsoever.
