    At first glance srylands yes, but they would have to form a coalition of some sort , just like May did with the DUP. I presume Labour would have first go at it and then the Conservatives would be allowed a go if Labour failed with negotiations to get a workable majority.

Was talking to a long time business colleague about world politics and must admit I nearly choked when he told me of his deepest economic fears.
It seem he believes that our country is woefully under prepared for climate change that WILL see our coast inundated by many miles as sea water floods our lands.
I asked him how bad does he think it will be?
Answer, “Maybe 10 to 15 meters high”.
I must admit I mentioned he has bigger worries as anyone who thinks that this maybe a possibility is in fact insane and complete fucken moron.

He left driving his new Audi Q7,polluting all the way.

Idiot,but nice taste in cars.

I bet he votes labour,guess we will save that conversation for another day.

  Green voters disproportionately live by the sea. Waiheke, Devonport, etc. Why isn’t there house price drops in coastal suburbs if Climate Skeptics are just a fringe minority. Why aren’t we seeing a shift of left voters inland as they buy houses in areas where they will be safe from the impending doom.

  Surely if someone thinks it is going to rise 15 metres in the next, say 80 years (by the end of the century) they can figure out in their head that this needs around 17 to 20 cm of rise a year, or a metre every 5 years. We have not seen that so it isn’t happening.
  
  Or do they believe that it is going to rise by two millimetres a year until 2099 then rise 14.8 metres in the last year?
  
  I suppose they also believe Kiwibuild’s 100, 000 houses programme is also on track!

    Some low lying countries will be affected. I know Tuvalu gets the press on this but I’d worry about Bangladesh. Hardly above sea level and hundreds of millions of people.

      Bangladesh has always been hardly above sea level. It is built in one massive flood plane/delta covered by most of the Himalayas.
      
      Every time the monsoons come, Bangladesh ends up knee deep in water and thousands drown. It has always been so.
      
      The Bangladeshi population has almost doubled since 1980 and the people must therefore live on more flood prone land than they would have 50 years ago. Of course it is mainly the poor, with the shittiest shacks, that end up living in the most extreme areas.
      
      Thus, the cause of increased problems with water is due mainly to population pressures driving people further and further into flood zones and not the rising water.

      Or, more realistically, 40-60mm by 2050, given subsidence corrected tidal gauge measured rates of rise are generally 1-2mm around the world, and rate of rise hasn’t changed noticeably over last 120 years.

    Yes, believing sea levels will rise 15 meters by the end of the century seems delusional. However, they will rise and the increase won’t be linear – we’ll see minimal increases like we’re seeing now, until/unless we hit a tipping point that dumps ice from Greenland and Antarctica into the oceans, in which case it will rise a lot, fast. It would be a good idea to make sure we don’t hit that tipping point.

      There is no empirical evidence to suggest increasing rates of rise. But there is strong reason to believe it will fall in future due to reduction in current huge rate of ground water extraction for irrigation. Climate models are outrageously pessimistic when compared to real-world data, and comically ill-founded in their mathematical simplification and assumptions. They have no demonstrated predictive skill and as such are PR tools, not science.

      And what would cause that “tipping point”?
      
      Ice on Antarctica is up to 4.7km thick in places. That’s a huge amount.
      
      When ice melts it absorbs a huge amount of energy (latent heat). Take a pot filled with ice and put it on the stove. Until almost all the ice is gone there is no significant temperature change.
      
      This provides a massive negative feedback system that moderates temperature.
      
      A “tipping point” suggests that some point will be reached where suddenly physics changes and run-away melting happens. For that to happen, physics would have to change such that melting ice would give off heat rather than absorb it.
      
      I’d rather believe that communism can work.

        Runaway melting of all the ice certainly would be a problem, as it would raise sea levels by 60 meters or so. I was meaning a tipping point like collapse of ice shelves that sees a lot more ice from glaciers hitting the sea a lot faster than expected. That wouldn’t result in meters of sea level increase, but even a few feet over a period of decades would cause major problems.

    I think things are particularly dire if you live in Wellington. There is a prevailing orthodoxy around hate speech, well being, Maori, poverty, the Treaty, te reo. It comes as a governing meme for social interaction. It has always existed, but my sense is that people who don’t agree with some or all of it are fearful of expressing their views.

      I live in Wellington and while yes it is definitely a red/green town, politics is freely debated as you would expect in a government town. In fact it is a common refrain that we need to remember that other parts of the country don’t care about politics as much as Wellington people do!

    Climate change: i might believe if the science wasn’t tainted by dishonesty, the models used actual data, the 70’s cooling eventuated and the sun didn’t lose its spots. A cooler world would be more difficult to live in.
    
    Immigration: why are Christians not chosen as immigrants? Muslims have vastly different beliefs to most Kiwis and a committal to change our society.
    
    Oppressed is what you make of it–the COL would oppress taxpayers to fund their control plans.

    I commented about this on nz.politics years ago. The political spectrum is like a clock face. A centrist party would sit at noon, a left wing party around 9 o’clock and a right wing party at around 3 o’clock. An extreme left wing party would be at 7 o’clock and an extreme right wing party at 5 o’clock. If either becomes more extreme it approaches 6 o’clock, in other words there is no real difference between an extreme left or right wing party.
    I think even the late Janice Graham, a fairly prolific left wing poster on nz.politics (but a good sort) recognised this.

      Another axis is individual vs communal ownership/management.
      Another axis is individual responsibility vs statism.

I see Shane Jones’s slush fund hits another controversy, this time giving funds to 2 small airline companies (one who didn’t even ask/apply for funds) totaling 30mil. This has been scuppered by other ‘signatories’ of the fund.
Shane Jones will bring down this CoL with his slush fund….let him spend spend spend as he cannot seem to keep away controversy and scandals.

A mate of mine’s work has gone on strike at one of its branches with placards stating that the company refuses to pay the ‘living wage’ which will increase to above $21 later this year. All led by First Union.
The MSM reports that the company makes millions of dollars profit every year. What it conveniently doesnt mention is that this branch has been consistently trading at losses every year. It also doesnt explore what will happen to those on $21-$24 already – yes thats right they will have grounds to demand $25-$30. All in a business unit that is trying to make ground with specialised product in the Chinese market.
Perhaps this will start a wave of strikes for the living wage across the country. Or perhaps they might all lose their jobs?

    It is so obvious that there should be any number of examples of where this has happened. So I went and looked. There have been studies in several countries – US, UK to name a couple. Generally run by either think tanks or academic economists. Nothing particularly left about them.
    
    No obvious examples showed up. I am as confused as anyone else.

    Minimum wage didn’t work for our small business. Young people with few clues and a patchy work ethic. Not all but most. Don’t hire them any more, but instead have taken on older, more experienced people. Pay them twice as much plus some. Works well, as do they.
    
    Having said that, recently took on a chap for a few hours a week just out of the big house to work alongside and help one of our older guys. So far so good.

    Would the lower income tax rate be slashed? Never saw a proposal or any analysis on that. I think that given the long lead time before CGT would have produced any meaningful revenue, “slashed” might be better described as another chewing gum tax cut. But as I say, we never saw any proposal. They threw in the towel as soon as they heard the bell for round one.

    Firstly, the final status was that it would not be tax neutral as the coalition decided there were other projects they would use any extra tax on.
    
    Secondly, there was to be no “increase” in the tax take as the CGT would take many years to implement and reach a point of collecting any money.
    
    If this was such a “needed” tax, how come National had signaled a tax drop for 2018 during the 2017 election campaign?

Bridges is hopeless.

I was a prison guard at Mt Eden until April last year. You want to go and work in a unit with 56 sweaty, angry young men, while the air conditioning isn’t working and we are wearing an 8 kilogram stabproof vest. I never got to have a “slushy” but we handed out iceblocks to prisoners twice a day for the whole summer of 17-18. Guess why our air conditioning wasn’t working? Because the former National Government privatised Mt Eden and SERCO had refused to fix the air conditioning system. Once SERCO was kicked out, the Department of Corrections argued with them as to who should pay for the fix.

This is so petty. $1m is the cost of 10 prisoners being housed for an entire year, a number that (rightly or wrongly) this Government has reduced significantly. Corrections has around 4000 fulltime prison staff. $1m equates to $250 per staff member. Over say what, 12 weeks? So the slushy machines cost under $21 per week per staff member, or less than an hour of overtime per week (which is nothing).

Bridges attacks frontline staff for keeping cool over summer when he could walk down the road to any departmental office in Wellington and look wasteful spending bureaucrats with travel accounts and big lunches in the face. How much did he waste as a Minister, as Opposition Leader? On legal fees fighting Jami-Lee Ross?

It was not freezing temperatures. It was about 7 degrees. Nothing would freeze. Even with a wind chill factor of -10C, that only gives the cooling rate – it does not mean anything would actually freeze.

Dudes, if you’re frozen you’re dead. No two ways about it.

As for the hiker. The dumb prick deserves his arse kicked for endangering others. I hope they throw the book at him.

It would not surprise me if the government canvasses a 80 kmh speed limit on undivided roads. They are certainly not building new ones.

    There is now three times as much traffic on these rural two-lane main highways as there was 40 years ago but the roads haven’t changed much.
    Now, a car going on the wrong side is six times more likely to have a head-on instead of harmlessly skidding into the ditch.
    There needs to be a commitment to four-lane the whole of SH1. It will be a 40 year project but it should have started 40 years ago.
    Not likely to get the attention of the current muppets.

    A contractual term requiring non-disclosure of what may have been a criminal act or conduct is of dubious enforceability. It would be reprehensible for Parliamentary Services to attempt to gag former employees that way.

    There are no dangerous roads. There are only drivers that do not drive to conditions.
    
    And yes, you can avoid a lot of crashes that are someone else’s fault by driving defensively.
    
    Always assume that if you can’t see the road ahead of you (eg. corner), then there is some dickhead broken down or overtaking on the wrong side of the road.
    
    Sure you can’t avoid them all, but you can still avoid most.

    Apparently there was just the driver in an SUV and eight people in the van. You see a lot lower income large families in 20 year old people movers. Just tin cans on wheels. Nobody in the rear wearing seat belts.
    
    And yet they allowed to stay on the road. Get these people off the road and go after both aggressive idiots and slow nannas who drive at 70 oblivious to the queue of 20 vehicles behind them.

Radical Muslim makes firearms threats and it’s all good!

I bet if I said something like that I’d have cops at my door.

Of course he’s happy because the people he sees as his enemy are being screwed over harder than he is.

And Nashy: “Police Minister Stuart Nash said he could not comment on the list but said the terror threat level remained at medium, with the police response the “largest ever criminal investigation” in New Zealand history.”

Bullshit mate, this is not a criminal investigation. It is a purge; a witch hunt!

A criminal investigation is an attempt to crack down on a specific person or people who committed or are associated with a specific criminal act. The criminal was caught 6 weeks ago and all his associates are way down South. Raids on people making posts on Facebook etc are not part of the criminal investigation but a wider operation. They are just exploiting this event for a crackdown on anyone that speaks their mind.

So far this has been used to:
* Clamp down on firearm ownership by law abiding people.
* Push through hate speech legislation etc.
* Come down heavy on the likes of KB.
* Threaten to shut down any media that don’t toe the line. Say bye-bye to the number 1 slot in press freedom.
* Work up international cooperation to censor social media.
* Hand out residence permits to people on temporary visas.
* Force through Global Compact on Migration.
* What’s next?
