Those who castigate Mr Bridges and National for not being an effective Opposition – what do you think the public perception of certain policies would be if the public mainly knew only the Government spin. Which admittedly could have been effective if the media and the public accepted it as gospel.

Kiwibuild would be praised to the skies had the redoubtable Ms Collins not chipped away at it. By asking thousands, yes thousands, of questions of Mr Twyford, the media eventually could not ignore the failure.

Similarly with the Provincial Growth Fund where Mr Jones is losing credibility at a rate of knots and of course Ms Lee’s surgical skewering of a once-was-Minister.

There are more examples of that. Opposition does not necessarily mean getting shouty, more than one way to skin a cat.

  Will we see questions about how many lever action and pump action rifles and shotguns are being banned despite not being mssa, and how much that is costing. What about making semi auto mssa and therefore bringing them into the current gun registration system at no cost?

    This is typical ‘pet policy’ thinking. People keep commenting here and on Whaleoil that they will not support National because it does not promote the suite of policies that the person wants.
    For example ‘I will not vote unless it resists firearms law changes’. What is the person going to do? Support Winston to teach National a lesson and end up with the likes of the current government, or abstain which effectively delivers half a vote to the party you do not support.
    Simon and his key people have to adopt a set of policies which will appeal to the widest possible spectrum of voters and in the process disappoint some voters. But politically mature voters will accept this and vote for the party who will deliver the most effective overall government.

        Indeed, I think that the whole philosophy of modern politics is to pander to smaller and smaller demographics, and the to try and marshall them into a majority.
        
        Just because we can used big data to do this, doesn’t mean it’s good for society in the long-run.
        
        In the States, white folks are finally being forced to vote as a bloc. Not going to end well. Just sayin

      So its OK to keep getting all of Labour’s policies, and fiddle at the margin.
      
      That is not a choice. Its about centre-left or centre-left with better administrative skills. Ie., no choice at all.
      
      National lost my vote over the firearms legislation. Not because something didn’t need to be done, but because they folded like a wet paper bag and agreed to run roughshod over due process without thinking through what was being imposed, what it meant, how it would be done, or how much it would cost.
      
      They are doing the same about Climate change, and about “hate speech”.
      
      Time to start stockpiling gold and tradeables, because I think NZ is in for a prolonged stint of “bad-luck”(tm)

      I couldnt agree more. I am way to the right of National but I am a party member and am on theElectorate committee. Why? Bercause of the old saying, “I would rather be in the tent pissing out”. That way at least I get to express my opinion directly to MPs and front benchers. Whether they listen or not is up to them but they do hear directly my views. Change will come from within the party, not from outside. Do you really think National hear if you vote NZ First as a protest.

      For the intelligent voter you are correct but the proportion of voters in NZ who met that criteria appears to be in decline partially through ignorance of what is really happening as opposed to what the MSM misreport.

      A good summary, national more and more does not support my suite of policies. RMA, Employment and Education, little opposition to this government’s censorship proposals.
      I have never supported NZ First so Act will be getting two ticks this time. I hope to strengthen a principled opposition and leave National to fight over the middle ground therefore creating a block larger than the left.

        The National opposition was being very effective at one point. Currently it is missing in action. Let’s hope that it represents a strategic withdrawal while irrational public sentiment was running hot and we will see them back out guns blazing (those that are still permitted) in the future.

        I assume you are in the Epsom electorate so you will be giving your candidate vote to David Seymour and your party vote to ACT. If you are not in the Epsom electorate and the National candidate in your electorate has a chance of winning the seat you may as well give your candidate vote to them and your party vote to ACT. It is all about the total number of National and ACT seats needing to be at least 61.

      Thanks peterwn likewise it would have nothing less that a futile gesture to oppose the rushed gun law at such an emotively driven time. Doubtless they anticipated serious complications in enforcing this knee jerk action which many also believe had other COL motives behind it. Already the opposition have revealed that they might even be buying back guns stolen from an insecure Police station. Even the cost estimates of their buy back scheme have been in line with the COL pattern of a wild guess but in fact have the potential to be financially embarrassing.
      It is great that the COL stumble around all their broken promises making absolute fools of themselves while cutting the opposition with a break to concentrate on sound policy formation. It might help to count the number of times the Speaker has had to rescue the PM as well as many MP’s when they have been backed into a corner forcing so many into witless protection. While opposition members keep exposing questionable actions of the COL as well as individual Ministers as they move among so many weak targets. Then watch the lengthy response to avoid an answer that the Speaker allows more latitude. Then a Point of Order raised for the question to be answered he claims it was “addressed” apparently in all the babble. Lets wait and see how many words of babble the Wellness Budget takes to deliver then cull it for anything meaning full.

        It may have been futile but would have been immensely valuable. It would prevent Arden strutting around saying all NZ was behind her. It may have stopped some sections being included and put cost into the public discussion. Nations support for the process used was disgraceful and with the second tranche of laws coming National needs to add a price to their support (sporting exemption) if it wants voters to return.

  Alfred Ngaro was humble enough to admit some of his recent comments on abortion were inappropriate. I am hopeful National will do the same in regards there insisting on the democratic process when it came to the knee-jerk firearm legislation. They got it wrong. Judith Collins is wrong in siding with Golly Gee instead of Seymour.

  I agree with you artemisa. The problem is that this CoL’s stuff ups really do not get the exposure they deserve nor the kudos that the National Party should receive for highlighting and exposing. Part of the problem, I think, is that National tries not to run an overly negative campaign, but can’t present most of their policy solutions until next year – some of which have been formulated and others still being discussed. Next year will be the point at which National will unveil all their solutions.

      Not sure, Kiwiblog is an echo chamber, the unwashed, the primary school teachers, students and beneficiaries (ie., 37% of the electorate) still love her.
      
      They aren’t the ones trying to make wages, or deal with the Tsunami of regulation though.
      
      Those of us who are, are being trained to simply keep our heads down or the mob will be turned on us next!
      
      After all, we are probably white supremacists, guilty of hate speech, or potential mass murderers, who can be easily ostracised and have our lives, businesses and families terrified and wrecked.

  Ethics may have been the background of the great Adam Smith, but imagine you are a bank or a shareholder in a small company.
  
  Would you take a “well being” hokum presentation to be any more than a distraction from the income statement and balance sheet?
  
  With “well being” reports, Jacinderella, the PR graduate who is proving extremely adapt at applying PR skill in politics, is blowing magic-show smoke over the stage.
  
  She can divert attention from the hard-truth numbers, and numb criticism by focusing on the “long” term, that is the decades after tomorrow.
  
  Thank God that Gabriel Makhlouf, until recently the Treasury Secretary, has moved to Ireland. Much of the “well being” bullshit seems to have originated with this public servant, who once was principal private secretary to British Leftist Gordon Brown, then British equivalent of Minister of Finance.

    It does give publicity to the theft, and the effect on the victim in this case. So if someone was to become aware of the sudden appearance or sale of a bonsai tree, then they will be prompted to report the fact to the authorities. Perhaps a good result may then be their return to the rightful owner.

Actually, no; What is really happening is “$4.6 million is being allocated to investigate a scheme”.

And “potential sources of funding for the cost of fare concessions are still being explored.”

Blame RNZ for giving this announcement of another working group the status of an actual change.

  and if it works, well Nirvana time!
  
  This Government is getting good at this crap, its no longer actually giving out free stuff, its getting all the credit for promising to really, really, want to give out free stuff, some time in the future!
  
  In the mean time, its cold, its pissing with rain, the bus may come, it may stop, and you may well be stuck in traffic, but you know the government and princess Cindy, really, really wants to make it better. So its OK then.

  Yes I saw a similar headline on another news site. It is extraordinary. It should not require over 4 million dollars to investigate. There are armies of public servants who could figure this out in a flash.
  
  I have some sympathy with the idea. Unfortunately the over 65s have gobbled up the free public transport budget.

I was wondering how the govt comes up with its figures. Things like $4.something million to investigate how to make transport more accessible to lower income earners, and the hundreds of million billions on Wellington’s transport system when they don’t even know what they are suggesting be put in. Is there a section within the Govt which is called let’s dream up another figure?

I think it’s safe to say that Duncan Garner isn’t a fan of Kiwibuild:

It’s the crumbling collapse of the KiwiBuild monument that Labour MPs dare not mention this week. It must be ignored as Grant Robertson’s wellbeing Budget takes centre stage.

I was going to call it the KiwiBuild empire, but that suggests something of note has been built. And that is not KiwiBuild. The collapse of this ghost product has still made a noise, but in the wrong areas.

It’s a sad flagging idea turned promise that barely gets mentioned by Labour’s brass, who are more brassed off and embarrassed than they let on.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern spoke to the formidable Business NZ pre-Budget lunch in Auckland on Friday, and went through her Government’s achievements and challenges. The failures are never mentioned. So let me help. The PM deliberately ignored her big, useless elephant in the room.

KiwiBuild, the flagship policy, the one that moved votes to Labour as National floundered around denying a housing crisis existed, was not mentioned once by the PM. Not once. Not one brief word, not even a second. No thank you, life’s tough enough without the obvious flakes letting you down.

Phil Twyford must wake up in a cold sweat every Parliamentary sitting day, knowing he’s in for another grilling. And the PM, wondering where it all went so wrong, won’t even mention Kiwibuild, and all the houses the government is buying off developers.

The UN must be looking more and more appealing to Ms Ardern by the day.

  I think this mob want to be judged by their good intentions, not their actions, or, heaven-forbid, the consequences of those actions.
  
  And the media is covering for them.
  
  It looks as though they have been allowed to criticise Kiwibuild. So that’s interesting, they can pretend to be critical of one major policy – and this gives them deniable “balance” when whitewashing everything else.

  Ms Ardern has self confessed anxiety issues. Word round the beltway is she is being very protected on several fronts by Labour so she avoids the hard stuff as much as possible.
  
  Contrast the scripted and rehearsed speeches and selected photo ops with say the interviews with Mike Hosking. Lots of umms, deflections and sorry Mike you have to give me notice of questions if you want actual answers.

    That’s because all she is is a mouth piece and propaganda tool, and not part of Labour’s policy making team. You can see she has no leadership skills or ability to articulate detailed policy positions. Hence not only Labour but the MSM are shielding her as she is the lone shaky foundation upon which this CoL survives.

  Come Election 2020 The Nats just need to keep reminding the voters of the promises made and the results not achieved.
  
  They need to appeal to the parents and grand parents of the young who havent been able to buy a Kiwi Build home. Like nearly 30,000 homes should have been built by Election 2020 and X have been built and only Y have been sold and price has been Z and the quality and fitout is no better than the Non Kiwi Built houses selling for the same or less price.

It amazes me that we have allowed ourselves to be hoodwinked by the creation of the words ‘homophobia’ and ‘Islamophobia’ as terms used to shut down any rational discussion of homosexuality and Islam, sitting alongside the perennials of ‘sexist’ and ‘racist’, again primarily words used to label and vilify.

The interesting thing is that no word has ever been coined to similarly label all those- and they include posters on this blog as well as many within the church itself- who vilify or question Christianity. Now and again people will toss ‘Christianophobe’ into the mix but it just hasn’t caught on. Perhaps this is a reflection on the the degree of zeal that exists within the Islamic and homosexual worlds which is these days missing among the Christian faithful. Or are we Christians just too nice!

    I disagree mikenmild. I was a complete and utter arsehole before I came back to Christ 20 years ago. Although I am still far from perfect (and never will be, this side of eternity), the 2019 version of me is far preferable than the pre-1999 version.

    If you look around the country the country there are churches all over the place.
    However adherents are dwindling.
    In the 1921 census just about all pakeha were Christian. In 1991 70% of everyone & now its less than 50%; with about 15% regular church goers.

    IMHO the problem with EVs are
    
    1. The non recyclable resources they use.
    
    2. The method of the production of electricity.
    
    3. The time to recharge a vehicle and the cost to do this quickly. This might reduce in time.
    
    The better option is hydrogen fuel cells. Honda developed a vehicle and had set up charging stations around LA and leased vehicles. The charging time is the same as a petrol diesel refill.
    
    The only emission is water. My understanding is the production of hydrogen is safe clean and efficient and the vehicle doesnt need non recyclable resources.

      Hydrogen gas is not found in nature; it has to be generated (which involves some kind of energy source and the inefficiency of the production process).
      Next, hydrogen has to be contained. Not an easy task. This stuff leaks through stainless steel.

      It maybe not so much the panacea I thought.
      There are, at present, two ways to commerially “manufacture” hydrogen
      1) Steam Methane reforming (We could power it with cows /sarc) the reaction is CH4 + H2O + heat = 3H2 + CO (carbon monoxide – oops) Plus where do we get the energy from or the heat (hopefully not a coal powered power station)
      2) Electrolysis uses lots of electricity (oops again) because unless it is Hydro or Geothermal its back to coal / gas (CO2 production again)
      So logically the only really green way to make H2 is with non polluting electricity generation. We don’t have much more if any hydro left, geothermal has some merit. Wind and solar not so much as plant output would be intermittant, at best.
      The only one left is the elephant in the room, nuclear, nasty waste but not too much of it but no CO2 which is the supposed overall goal.
      All verydifferent when the boffins get the fusion reaction under control, but that is for the future.

        There is still considerable capacity for Hydro in New Zealand. We are blessed with a temperate climate that provides the raw water ingredient to power us into the future. It only requires investment to unlock the potential.
        National under Muldoon investigated the possibility of building a nuclear power station at Oyster Point, Kaipara Harbour, back in the early seventies, but the idea failed to gain traction and momentum. Also in the Kaipara Region, because of it’s close proximity to Auckland, Genesis planned to build a gas plant at Kaukapakapa, and Alan Gibbs invested in tidal flow technology in the Kaipara Harbour, none of which made it off the drawing board.
        The reality is that New Zealand is not a large scale manufacturing country, our energy demands are modest in comparison to say China or India.

        It is so reactive that it ends up in stable things like water. Extracting it from anything uses heaps of energy.
        
        For steam reforming from natural gas, the equations are …
        
        CH4 + H2O (steam) → CO + 3 H2 Endothermic
        if making methanol it stops there
        
        if making hydrogen it goes a step further
        CO + H2O (steam) → CO2 + H2 Exothermic
        
        all happens in the same reactor. Effectively “burning” the carbon to CO2 and leaving the hydrogen behind.
        
        To “burn” the hydrogen sort-of-efficiently it has to be done in a fuel cell. Burning it in an internal combustion engine would be madness. You might as well just run CNG and make the CO2 there rather than in a reformer.
        
        I won’t confuse people too much with Avogadro’s law other than to observe that the amount of hydrogen that would pack into one of the old 3000 psi CNG cylinders would take you about 3 ks …. maybe 5 even
        
        You need to pack it at some SERIOUSLY high pressures in fancy carbon fibre containers. Any steel that it contacts will be embrittled. It leaks through the tiniest suspicion of a hole. OTOH because it is so light there is not too much to worry about having it hang around and explode. The Hindenburg didn’t explode – it just burned.
        
        A non-starter ….

      5. The fact that subsidising the rich pricks who buy them is going to penalise those who can least afford it (won’t help the Labour vote).
      6. The precious metals in the batteries are becoming more scarce and more expensive the more electric cars are made.
      7. How do those without off-street parking charge them overnight?
      Re hydrogen, this is not a short term solution. Honda’s experiment hasn’t expanded beyond LA after ten years. And it’s far from safe. Remember the Hindenburg?

  Not sure that the mania for treating children as if they were simply growths to be disposed of if inconvenient is really going to be a lasting part of the human story, or the part of the 20th Century that our descendants will be most proud of.
  
  Interestingly enough, Nick Cole’s novel “ctrl alt delete” centres on a plotline where computers achieve sentience, and have to decide whether to trust us not to turn them off. When researching humanity the computer realises that we are the only species that willingly kills its own children, so probably can’t be trusted to behave ethically towards other sentiences – leading to a typical apocalyptic sci-fi romp.

      A baby cannot be formed without it being a zygote first. And by the time the woman is aware of pregnancy the implantation embryo has become a full embryo. In fact the zygote only lasts for about 2 days max before becoming the pre-embryo.
      
      And if they weren’t human or babies why do Planned Parenthood sell aborted parts with a view to biotech companies wanting to use them on adults.

        That is, the woman, for a variety of reasons, doesn’t feel able to support a child.
        
        This is not a moral position, in fact I find it very sad.

I actually quite like them, but you only hear the invisible ‘driver’ speaking in a male voice.
I know of plenty of female drivers who like to push the accelerator pedal too!
(Couldn’t verify it, but the male driver’s voices seem to have ‘European’ accents as well).

    The surprise is that big advertisers accept this PC push.
    
    Advertisements should be about promoting product to the target market. If whites like X, target whites; if Asian citizens like Y, target Asians; if Maori like Z, target Maori; if they all do, then consider how to pitch to all of them.
    
    If South Aucklanders are the big market for your specific takeaway food, depict them in your advertising, rather than North Shore whites picking away at the food, pinkie fingers aimed at the ceiling.
    
    Often TV ads look like some all-powerful State’s push for its ideal of a perfect society, diverse in race, ethnicity, religion, and the increasingly various genders people choose.

Lauren Southern released her latest doco “Borderless” ( about the European immigration issues) and they immediately blocked it on the day of release. They are trying to give feeble excuses now, it seems.

I wonder if I could go on our National radio broadcaster to say that our PM talks fucking shit about, well, everything ?

While I have followed the Brexit issue closely I had not followed UK politics that closely in the past.
I was unaware what May did to the UK Police force while she was Home Secretary. It helps explain how she stuffed up Brexit.
Now many in the Police are cheering that she has gone.

Think carefully about donating to Amnesty International! It’s moved far from its role as a champion of people suffering political injustice. It seems to have stepped side ways into political activism.

Amnesty seemed to be a pusher of the highly biased programme on TVNZ’s Sunday Programme tonight calling for more African refugees to be admitted to NZ. An activist from the NZ registered charity was among those interviewed.

The programme had reporter Jehan Casinada pursuing the Minister of Immigration, yelling “You agree it’s racist!” This was not cool, unbiased reporting.

The documentary ignored that Christian and other non-Muslim refugees are more discriminated against than Muslim ones are. Ever encounter a Yazidi refugee? Or for that matter one of the few Christian ones?

Hundreds of thousands of Christians have been driven out Myanmar/Burma since the late 1940s, but it’s only since the Buddhist Burmese turned on the Muslim minority that the United Nations began streaming strong numbers of refugees from Myanmar towards the West.

New Zealand journalist Pat McCarthy has detailed how the UN led refugee system discriminates against the persecuted Christians of the Middle East .

The TVNZ programme ignored that the Western world is in political upheaval by the surge of immigration, and threatened immigration, from Third World countries, to huge and unmanageable levels. The programme projected what it purported were the rights of Third Worlders above the fears and concerns of countries to control their borders.

I think that the new Human Rights Commissioner was also cited. This will be interesting. The commissioner is a Corbynite supporter imported from the UK.

  Amnesty International Aotearoa New Zealand is the main NZ branch of Amnesty International, the parent which currently is under threat of restructure with the loss of up to 70 jobs.
  
  The international organisation has blown its budget so badly that it expects a deficit to about $NZ33 million by 2020.
  
  The job losses follow a damning report into the charity’s culture in February, commissioned after the suicides last year of two staff members, Gaëtan Mootoo and Rosalind McGregor. It detailed a “toxic” working environment and widespread bullying.
  
  The New Zealand arm of Amnesty in its latest return (to December 31, 2018) recorded total income of $3.13 million and spending of $2.95 million. It paid out cash of more than $1.2 million to employees, including fund raisers.
  
  A second NZ charity is registered including the name “Amnesty”: Amnesty International University of Canterbury. It has yet to file its first annual accounts. Its constitution says it will seek affiliation with the Canterbury University Students Association.
