  Twyford consistently over-promises and under-delivers.
  
  A perfect example, in miniature, of how this whole government operates.
  
  One of the features of the Key/English government was how they just quietly went about their work and surprised us repeatedly with the quality of their outcomes.
  
  The current administration, however, is all hair-oil and no socks.
  
  All gong and no dinner!

      H-o, I have a little story about how:
      Inept;
      Incompotent;
      Ineffectual; or
      Totally useless
      (Choose your selection from above).
      Twyford and Lees-Galloway are in combination.
      
      Some of you may have read of Lees-Galloway’s piece of legislation called the Employment Relations Amendment Act. The same bill that had sought to get rid of the 90 day probation period for new employees.
      
      Last week David ran a post about Twyford and Lees-Galloway needing to take to cabinet an industry wide agreement to resolve an issue.
      
      Well buried in the Act are clauses about mandatory paid 10 minute breaks after 2 hours work for an employee. These clauses are very onerous for employers with fixed long term contracts with organizations like the government, where the supplier can’t change their price, but as an employer they are obligated to apply the law.
      
      So, the bus industry duly went to Wellington to see the ministers (Twyford and Lees-Galloway). The response of the ministers absolutely floored the bus industry leaders. One MD of a major company said to me, that both of them are absolutely clueless and didn’t have any notion what was being told to them.
      
      After the ministers got up to speed, they agreed with the industry and the workers an agreement, which says everybody will work together over the next 12 months to implement the law. The problem for us taxpayers, this little farce will cost NZ $millions each year, and the employers know they can’t achieve it, because NZ has had a shortage of bus drivers for the past 2 years and now we need 1500 more. Brilliant! I couldn’t imagine a bigger mess without trying hard!

  MUDHUTs will underwrite private developers to provide modest dwellings in unpopular areas, subsidized by the taxpayer, to qualifying buyers.

Nick Smith will accept Karen Dow’s petition to Parliament this afternoon [yesterday] seeking urgent legislation to introduce random roadside drug testing “to reduce the escalating road toll from drugged drivers, which resulted in 79 fatal crashes in 2017 and exceeds the number caused by those impaired by alcohol”. – Herald

The fact mentioned above: the number of fatal crashes attributable to drugged drivers, is not reflected in the current television ad where – although his car is pranged sufficiently, as is the vehicle he hits, and although nothing is shown of injured other parties – the perpetrator and passenger suffer little more than being showered with a milkshake, and misrepresents a possible outcome of the proposed referendum on cannabis use – that there may be increased drugged driving injury and deaths.

As the ad minimises the issue, and in regard now to the referendum, it misrepresents drugged driving – change the fucking ad.
Considering the current deadly road toll, a slap in the face with a wet milkshake is truly pathetic.

  Of course we must have every sympathy and respect to anybody who is bereaved. But that does not extend to acknowledging them as an expert and it does not make them qualified to give a balanced and rational view as to what actions would be effective. In this case the (im)practicality and cost of roadside testing and the problematic nature of the evidence means that the case for action is not clear cut.
  
  Not that this Government deserves our sympathy. The fact that things are not as simplistic and easily addressable as popular opinion might have it, never stopped them when they were in opposition. But I had hoped for better from National.

  In meth country (Whangarei) it’s becoming noticeable that many drivers, who used to dawdle happily under the influence of marijuana, are showing markedly different behaviour.
  
  It shows up as passive/aggressive. The car, with the inevitable boom box thumping out obscenities, will be waiting at the green light, or driving with excessive caution at very low speed. But when another driver tries to pass, or wake them up with a gentle toot, they will activate sudden road rage. This takes the form of rude gestures, obscenities, and extremely aggressive driving. It’s actually quite scary to be on the receiving end.

The supreme court can apparently dismiss the appeal, order a new trial or quash the conviction. If the appeal is dismissed new evidence is always open to be brought.

A few ideas would be the fast expanding dna database revealing familial identification of the male dna under the fingernails of both victims, (not Lundy), identification of the fingerprints around the (allegedly staged) break in at the freshly cleaned ranch slider, (not Lundy), and mitochondrial dna analysis of the 21 hairs found in Christine Lundy’s hands by inspector Oram at the autopsy, (not Lundy).

None of the above has happened yet.

The government want a cross party approach to cannabis so they can say a Bill will be binding on whatever government we have next, depending on the results of the reeferendum.

But that assumes there will be consensus on the contents of the Bill. Hard to see that consensus actually happening based on the differing views already evident, especially as the complex ‘infrastructure’ issues are currently vague in the extreme.

Better for the government to do the hard yards first and get those ducks in a tidy row. Rather than slogans and hope.

Even if National and ACT do join in a cross party approach it could well backfire on the government if there are wide gaps in approach. And there will be.

  Apologies in advance for the length of this post, but it is mandatory reading. Mallard overplayed his hand yesterday. First up, here’s Q12:

  12. Hon Dr NICK SMITH (National—Nelson) to the Minister of Police: Does he stand by all his statements, policies, and actions?
  
  Hon STUART NASH (Minister of Police): Yes.
  
  Hon Dr Nick Smith: Does he stand by his statement to TVNZ on roadside drug-testing last December, in response to the Matthew Dow tragedy in Nelson, in which he said—and I quote—”There’s a discussion document that has been approved by Cabinet that’s going to go out to the public early next year”.
  
  Hon STUART NASH: First of all, let me say that if a person is impaired by drugs or alcohol they should not be driving. It is against the law. We are looking at a new strategy to improve road safety during 2019. An immediate $100 million increase of funding was made to improve road safety when we took office. However, more announcements will be made shortly.
  
  Hon Dr Nick Smith: I raise a point of order, Mr Speaker. My question was whether he stood by an important statement.
  
  SPEAKER: The member very clearly got a “no” out of that. Carry on.
  
  Hon Dr Nick Smith: I certainly didn’t hear a “no”. I heard a comment on the issue. I heard nothing about—look, he said Cabinet had approved something.
  
  SPEAKER: Order! Order!
  
  Hon Dr Nick Smith: Did Cabinet, last year, approve a discussion paper on enabling police to do roadside drug testing? If not, why did he tell TVNZ and the people of New Zealand that it had approved such a discussion paper?
  
  Hon STUART NASH: That member’s been around long enough to know that we don’t discuss what goes on in Cabinet in the House.
  
  Hon Dr Nick Smith: Point of order, Mr Speaker.
  
  SPEAKER: No, no. I don’t need it. The member had a straight question, and it was a very clear question. It related to a direct quote from him. We had already commented that a paper had been approved by Cabinet. I’m sort of taking Dr Nick Smith’s word that the quote is accurate, and it’d be pretty serious if it’s not, but, taking that at face value, he cannot say on television that Cabinet approved something and then say that it’s not his role to say so in this House.
  
  Hon STUART NASH: What I can say is I do not recall saying that, but what I will say is work is undergoing in this area.
  
  Hon Dr Nick Smith: Will the Minister apologise to the mother of Matthew Dow, who would’ve turned 25 today if not killed by a reckless drug-driver, given that he misled her in saying that Cabinet had approved a discussion document and that it was to be released earlier this year?
  
  Rt Hon Winston Peters: I raise a point of order, Mr Speaker. With the greatest respect, this is certainly no way to treat human tragedy in the way it’s being played out politically in this House, and we, on this side of this House, seriously object. We don’t diminish, in any way—
  
  Hon Michael Woodhouse: Is the question out of order or not?
  
  Rt Hon Winston Peters: —the harm or the hurt that the family might have felt, but this is not the way for this Parliament to behave, surely.
  
  SPEAKER: First of all, I want to deal with the person who interjected during that point of order. Who was that?
  
  Hon Michael Woodhouse: That would probably have been me, Mr Speaker.
  
  SPEAKER: The member will leave the Chamber.
  
  Hon Michael Woodhouse withdrew from the Chamber.
  
  Hon Dr Nick Smith: Point of order, Mr Speaker.
  
  SPEAKER: No. I’m contemplating dealing with this point of order. This is a very serious matter. It involves the death of a loved one. I think many of us are concerned at the approach that is being taken in the House now, but in my opinion it is a matter of, at the moment, judgment of good taste and good taste rather than a matter, at the moment, of order. So if Dr Smith wants to restate his question with that proviso—the clear indication from me that there’s a question of taste and appropriateness involved here—but he is a very senior member, and, obviously, the public will make their judgment on it.
  
  Hon Dr Nick Smith: I raise a point of order, Mr Speaker. You have rightly noted this is a serious matter. A key part of that is the accuracy of the quote, and I accept that—
  
  SPEAKER: Order! The member has been invited to ask his supplementary question again, as he did previously before he was interrupted by the Deputy Prime Minister. No one has doubted his word as far as the accuracy of that quote is concerned. All we’ve had is the Minister saying that he can’t recall saying it.
  
  Hon Dr Nick Smith: Will the Minister apologise to the Dow family and to the people of New Zealand for his false statement, and I quote, “There’s a discussion document that’s been approved by Cabinet that’s going to go out to the public early next year” when that was untrue?
  
  Hon STUART NASH: I have absolute sympathy for the Dow family, and your loss—I cannot imagine it. I will not apologise for something I have absolutely no responsibility for. For every family that has lost someone on our roads because there is a drink- or drug-driver, I have absolute sympathy. What I can say is work is going on in this area, though. Another thing I would say is Mr Scott brought a member’s bill to the House last year. I sat down with him and I tried to work with him on this, because we felt that the scope of his bill was too narrow. We asked to work with him. He refused to do that, so this Government undertook to address this in a way that actually addressed the issue.
  
  Hon Dr Nick Smith: Supplementary.
  
  SPEAKER: No. The member’s run out of supplementaries.
  
  Smith then took a Point of Order:
  
  Land Transport (Roadside Drug Testing) Amendment Bill—Leave to Set Down as First Members’ Order of the Day
  
  Hon Dr NICK SMITH (National—Nelson): I seek leave of the House for the Land Transport (Roadside Drug Testing) Amendment Bill to be set down to be set down as the first members’ order of the day on the next members’ day on 22 May.
  
  SPEAKER: Leave is not going to be granted for that.
  
  Hon Dr NICK SMITH (National—Nelson): I raise a point of order, Mr Speaker. You need to put the leave.
  
  SPEAKER: Well, I’ve made it absolutely clear that I won’t grant leave for it.
  
  Hon Dr Nick Smith: Oh, you’re opposed to helping getting drug-drivers off the road as well?
  
  SPEAKER: I have made it absolutely clear that I am very unhappy with the member and his approach—
  
  Hon Dr Nick Smith: For standing up for my constituents?
  
  SPEAKER: The member will leave the House.
  
  Hon Dr Nick Smith: Soft on drugs like the Government.
  
  SPEAKER: Order! Right, no—come back, please. The member will resume his seat.
  
  It is a long-established convention that any Member may ask for leave for pretty much anything, but that if any other Member objects, leave is not granted. I have never however heard a Speaker refuse to put leave because was unhappy with a Member.
  
  Mallard seems to have an anger problem. He was convicted of fighting in a public place after an altercation in Parliament with National MP Tau Henare. He has probably been ejected from the House as often as any other current MP, with the possible exception of Rt Hon. Winston Peters. Check out this video from 2009, when Mallard was kicked out of the House by Speaker Lockwood Smith, giving Smith a gobful on the way out:

  On that occasion Smith considered naming Mallard, but declined to do so. He did however counsel Labour MP’s that Mallard needed to “deal with his anger”. Yesterday, Mallard’s reaction to Nick Smith was that of an angry man, and of a poacher turned gamekeeper.
  
  Is he a fit person to hold the role of Speaker? I suggest that question is going to be asked more after the events of the last couple of days.

    It would appear on the face of it that Mallard is spending a great deal of time covering for the PM and her ministers and when it becomes bleeding obvious that he can’t do so any longer (or he happens not to like the minister) then he papers over the mess by awarding supplementary questions which he stops the opposition from using properly anyway.

    Smith’s stunt was in bad taste and didn’t offer dignity to the family of the deceased, the house or himself
    Nash has lied, in the house and to the public and needs to apologise and sort his shit out, instead of being a moderate voice and centrist future for labour he is a Buffoon.
    Mallard I don’t actually mind as speaker, no where as bad as Wilson but certainly no Lockwood Smith as the videos show. But he has let himself down by over reaching, over reacting and losing his cool once again.
    An embarrassing episode for all involved and not worthy of the house.

According to his and Jacinda’s responses yesterday, in the next few weeks, Twyford is going to have to admit that the CoL are not going to deliver 100,000 KiwislumBuild homes over 10 years. This is a major fail on a Labour flagship policy and 2 flagship Labour policies of the last 9 years thrown under the wheels of a passing truck.
So:
1. When is Twyford going to admit he doesn’t know what he is doing and resign from Parliament (he is even a fail as a MP);
2. When is Jacinda going to admit her 2017 manifesto was a fraud, and she became PM on a bunch of promises that were not real; and
3. When are the media going to hold the fraudulent CoL to account.

….and to add to it is the Pike River sham, Hipkins education reforms – all a case of politics before governance.

  I think both smith and carter both lost their temper a few times in the chair and it was always with the same person, mallard.
  
  Although I do think mallard does have some good points as speaker, like punishing ministers for their quality of written answers. I wouldn’t mind him as speaker if he was fair. Peters should of been kicked out a few times recently and isn’t. Jacinda gets away without answering. Smith in my view was the best speaker. I do wonder if the speaker should not be a politician.

Can someone explain to me how making NZ Carbon Neutral will have any effect on Global Carbon Emissions, seeing as NZ produces 0.17% of the Global Total? By the way, Our Land area as a country is also 0.17% of the Global Total.

China has 6% of Global Land, but produces 27% of Global emissions.

The US has 6% of land, but produces nearly 15% of Global emissions

We are not the problem.

  China also should not have to worry as most of their emissions are as a result of the stuff they make for the rest of the world.
  I’d just like to see huge urgent action on over- population in countries such as Egypt, Pakistan, Indonesia, Nigeria, Uganda.

  It would be extremely effective if we could serve as a demonstration case, illustrating that emissions reduction can be done in market-compatible ways that don’t cripple the economy and can even have impacts that are positive for living standards, for that would be likely to encourage others to do likewise.

If by 2050 we have managed to get to net zero and still have a thriving economy, then according to the climate change gurus it will be too late for the big emitters to follow our lead.     Everyone was holding Germany up as the great showcase of how going to renewables was such a success. Read the latest Beeld and you see it was all smoke and mirrors, costing billions in government subsidies, and now that the agreed subsidies are coming to an end it’s all turning to custard. I can’t see what makes anyone think that NZ with its tiny economy in relative terms has the capacity to absorb the cost of going “green”, even with nuclear energy (which I agree would be the best option).
    And we are talking about going to renewables at a massive cost to our economy, where 1) We are less than a drop in the ocean WRT “greenhouse gas emissions”‘ and 2) The AGW debate is a long way from settled, particularly with the AGW advocates propensity for selective reporting (AKA lying).

  Well, someone asked Russell Norman pretty much just that yesterday. His answer was that as NZ would be particularly badly damaged by climate change (very questionable), we will need to ask USA, China and India to save us. We can’t do that if we aren’t playing our part. So the hope is that if we reduce we will be able to threaten, persuade or shame the big emitters to follow our lead. Of course it makes no sense. They will act as they always do – in their own best interests regardless of what we do.

“One treaty, One nation” by Hugh Barr, Don Brash et al is a great read for those concerned about the treaty of waitangi settlements. Historian Bruce Moon contributes a chapter about Ngai Tahu, a very greedy Tribe.
Apparently Ngai Tahu have had settlements for their land 5 times! And still they go back for me having recently been awarded millions of dollars of top ups.

Ngai Tahu are characterised by Bruce Moon as Johny come latelys from the North Island who slaughtered local South Island tribes. They were then fallen upon in retaliation by more powerful North Isle tribes and found themselves at a low ebb. They survived by marrying into the vigorous white settlers and that’s why current Ngai Tahu are more white than anything else.

They never cultivated more than 2% of the South island and there seems very little way that such a small Tribe can own the South Island!

But still their leaders are doing very well thank you given the generous settlements which enables the tribal elite to live in an extremely prosperous manner. Also their tribal businesses are tax free which gives them enormous competitive advantage.

Ngai Tahu are but an example of extremely contentious claims that are being awarded to these tribes to basically pay them off to avoid actually seeking the truth. Millions and millions of dollars are going from you, the taxpayer, to these tribal interests with no expectation this gravy train will actually stop in the foreseeable future.

This should be an election issue and would be if the media ever reported honestly about the treaty “settlements”.

  That’s an interestng idea. What kind of quota do you think should be set for land ownership by an individual, a family or an extended kin group? For myself, I can’t see any reason why a person or a family needs to own more than one farm, for example, but I am interested in what mechanism you are proposing to place restrictions on land owndership.

    A good deal of Ngai Tahu’s Treaty successes can be put down to former National Minister Chris Finlayson, who before his political career acted for the tribe. Later as Treaty Minister he was able to sign off a generous top-up for it.
    
    Former National Minister Doug Graham was party to the signing off at least one of Ngai Tahu’s big deals: the first right – in perpetuity, i.e. for ever – to buy State assets being sold in the South Island.
    
    The tribe has been smart in its hiring of business executives, and smart in its political acumen.
    
    Apart from its businesses operating, under group charity registration, free of company tax, the tribe has had a National list MP (Nuk), and Nuk’s wife chairs the board of State-appointed trustees who control assets from the sale of the region’s savings banks (the trust has a new Maori name).
    
    Ngai Tahu approves all research topics at the University of Otago, and has a tribal research centre at the University of Canterbury.
    
    The tribe has been prominent in the introducing Maori names in Christchurch. The $100 million new central library, for example, is Turanga, complete with a macron.
    
    A recent knockback has been loss of the move to have representatives on the Canterbury Environmental Council, though this may yet be circumvented — by reserving places on council committees.

    It probably equates to how likely they were to traverse and use the land. If your primitive technology meant you could only travel by foot, then your community would be small in size. As technology has advanced, mankind has been able to spread out, as a days travel can now be vast.
    
    I dont believe Ngai Tahu were nomadic, so they probably weren’t constantly wandering the plains, therefore they must have settled and farmed in small communities possible never even visiting most of the South Island.

  Mikey – good question. Let me put it another way. The Ngai Tahu numbered about 500 people scratching out a bare living at the eastern tip of the South Island. In what sense can those 500 people own the whole South Island?
  
  And why should they be compensated with final settlements five times? And why should they be now given top ups of literally hundreds of millions of dollars?
  
  I’m sure that taxpayers, given the chance to examine these circumstances, would have reason to feel aggrieved. They are paying out literally hundreds of millions of dollars to the mostly white descendants of a very small tribe for the whole of the South Island, when the facts are that most of the South Island was empty of human inhabitants.
  
  Do we want our children and their children to continue to pay out this one small tribe in perpetuity? I suspect most of us don’t?

Watched ‘Question Time’ again yesterday. Was just a little concerned about the PM’s appearance. She is looking sooo pale and pastry that I think a visit to an Endocrinologist may be of benefit. Compared to Paula, who always looks fit, tanned, and absolutley glowing these days, the PM appears to me she would rather be elsewhere.

The other thing that really upset me, was when Nikki Kaye stood to ask Q7. She was wearing the exact same outfit that I bought from Prada ealier this year! They had assured me it was an ‘exclusive one off design’, yet theres Nikki wearing it as well. I can only assume it must be a ‘knock-off’ she picked up off ebay 🙁

Maorification of State radio has gone further than promoting Maori language.

Radio NZ’s web site today shows Radio NZ highlighting the activist campaign to ruin the 200th anniversary celebration of Captain Cook reaching New Zealand. The report is from the angle of Maori activism.

It begins:

“More than $20 million is being spent on events and resources to mark the anniversary of Cook’s landing in Tūranganui-a-Kiwa, later named Gisborne, in 1769.”

What was effectively Maori control of Radio NZ was negotiated by Wily-Willy Jackson on behalf of the 20-station tribal radio network. He clinched the arrangement under a National-led Government. Radio NZ then, as now, was pushing the Left view hard, but there wasn’t a peep from National about the change.

    I don’t think New Zealand has idealized – or idolised – Captain Cook, undoubtedly a great navigator and seaman.
    
    Cook started the process that brought these islands into the Western world, and hooray for that. He made the first charts of these islands, and the botanist with him, Joseph Banks, pioneered scientific work that would lead to New Zealand becoming economically viable – as an agricultural exporter.
    
    Cook’s NZ-touching voyages, especially the first, are well worth commemorating.
    
    Those who want Polynesian seafaring skills recognised would do well also to acknowledge Cook’s work.

    Life expectancy in England in the 1700’s for the lower classes was in the thirties, mainly due to a woeful diet and healthcare that was more dangerous than no healthcare.
    According to Michael King’s History of New Zealand research suggests Māori at the time lived to around thirty.

      Read their reports. The summaries are written by international political reps. The Reports come a year later and are a 1000+ pages. They conflict with previous reports but are largely hidden because the Summaries take precedence.
      
      The Third Assessment Report boldly admitted that no forecasts were possible as they were dealing with a chaotic system. The maths didn’t allow it.
      Most of what passes for climate science from the UN is political.

The London police “finished off” the three wounded extremist attackers as they lay on the ground. The cops were concerned the Islamicists might have explosive devices.

In Christchurch, the two capturing policemen saw explosives in the fleeing man’s car, but were undeterred.

A long life in prison without chance of parole is probably a heavier penalty than death. But if I were in one of the London policemen’s shoes I think I would have pulled the trigger.

The question is whether, on their honeymoon, they could pop into New Zealand and, using the royal prerogative, sign the bill. Could Will sign the bill?

Winston in his dotage is now at a stage in life where he wants to appear as the kindly, gracious, wisely old koroua and impart his years of wisdom, knowledge and experience onto a willing apprentice.
We really just need to think of Winston as being the responsible mentor – or kaiwhakaako – to our keen young PM.

Australia’s state-of-the-art $50 note misspells responsibility.

Millions of banknotes have typographical error that was overlooked by central bank before printing and circulation. It is the most widely circulated note in Australia, accounting for nearly half of the total value of other banknotes in use and has been hailed for its multiple security features, including microprint of a speech by the country’s first female parliamentarian, Edith Cowan.

But it also comes with a rather embarrassing typographical error.

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has spelled “responsibility” as “responsibilty” on millions of new Australian dollar 50 ($35) banknotes which came into circulation on October 18 last year.

No one should be sacked by their employer for statements of genuine belief and faith that have got nothing to do with their job.

The Folau case exposes the new serfdom in the Australian workplace: how big companies, the corporate PC-elites are wanting to control all aspects of their employees’ lives – their religious and political views, how they speak and think, how they behave, even in their own time away from the workplace.

This is a stunning intrusion on workers’ rights.

Yet far from condemning the new serfdom, Labor and the trade unions have been cheering it on.
