Good Morning
I don’t do Thursdays Jacinda.
All is well in the world, Jacinda has now been in power 650 days.
In that time, she has morphed into the kind darling of the world.
Whilst back at the day to day job, it appears Jacinda doesn’t really like fronting Parliament for question time.
I thought it important the PM fronts the parliament to answer questions?
How far back do we have to go to find a Thursday where she fronted question time.
From what I can find in Parliamentary records.
She has managed to drag herself into the chamber on two occasions, yes just two occasions.
First was Thursday 16 November, the first sitting of this term of Parliament.
The second appearance, just 17 months ago on 1 March 2018.
The most open accountable government?
Great work if you can get it
Has had to front 25 question times so far this year.
Great work if you can get.
Maybe it is in the Winston agreement, has to be some reason.

  I would be the last person to defend the hopeless current PM but there has been a tradition since whenever that the PM and Opposition Leader don’t do Thursday question time.
  And yesterday she was at Sir Brian Lochore’s funeral.

    Quite so Captain. Given Sir BJ was a Member of the Order of New Zealand, I would expect nothing less than the PM being at the funeral. And again in her defence, she returned to Parliament later in the day and took a call in the Abortion Debate.

        I’m not for one moment defending Ardern Biscuit. She is out of her depth in my opinion, and things are starting to spiral out of control.

    I have no issue with the PM not doing Thursday’s Question Time (questioners know where they stand with this) and I have no issue with the PM attending Sir Brian’s funeral.
    What would be annoying is if the PM randomly and without notice skipped Question Time.

      A PM may choose to use CR1 alone to go to such an event, since the car is effectively a workplace and there is generally work to catch up on. As a general case, no criticism can be made of this.

    The latest gain of 49,427 was the result of 145,292 new long term arrivals and 95,866 long term departures.
    
    The reduction in the net gain has mainly been driven by more people leaving the country long term, which has steadily risen for the last three years, while long term arrivals have remained near their June year 2016 peak of 145,831 for the last three years.

    I don’t have sodastream so no need to buy their products, and I can’t convince the ladies of the household to give away Netflix, but otherwise all those products are on my “no buy list”, and I do the shopping in my household.   A far superior, and far more satisfying, shave can be had with old-school safety razors for a tiny fraction of the price.
  
  For the price of a 4-pack of Gillette you can get about 100 safety razor blades which will cover you for over 2 years.

Mike Hosking on Kiwibuild this morning.

I can’t help but think Eaqub’s plans involve cold, white, prefab boxes. In other words, he’s solving housing by numbers. It’s Lego housing. Numerically it works; real world it’s a ghetto.

And in larger Kiwibuild developments, like Unitec, if they proceed as planned, a big chunk are to be social housing. In a high density development, that ghetto is going to be sooner rather than later.

This week I checked out Monark, the Wellington city fringe development of over 90 apartments and a few other units, due to complete in about 18 months. Almost half are for Kiwibuild and word is there has been a lot of interest. Of course we have heard this before and it might all go very quiet when ballot closes in a few days. If they don’t sell and the underwrite is triggered, some sold on the open market will end up as rentals (not allowed under Kiwibuild for 3 years) and possibly some will end up as social housing.

(Body corporate levies are based on June 2017 numbers and are likely to be a lot bigger than the approx $3000 annual per unit in the draft budget. Banks will be aware when assessing serviceability for Kiwibuild applicants seeking preapproval and this will affect bank decisions.)

What a week it’s been; probably the worst one the Greens, Labour and NZF have had, both individually and collectively, since they came to power. Jacinda Ardern seems to have developed the reverse Midas touch, where everything she touches turns to crap!

  Labour was, and still is, the 25% party. They fronted Jacinda and she picked up an extra 12% just for being something fresh. It was the “hope vote”.
  
  Now people see that she was all sparkle and no substance, the 25% Labour shines through again.

      Of course you are assuming that any polling will be either fair or accurate.
      
      The first thing I look at is the “Don’t know” or “won’t say”. I then relate that to the Australian election and it does give me hope.
      
      The idiots out there all want to be “seen’ as being a cindy supporter so open their mouths at the first opportunity… supporters of the “other side” are generally more reluctant so I would add at least half the “non replies” to National and Simon Bridges.

  G152 – yes I saw that as well on the news. It appears that the Democrats having failed to prove that Trump is a Russian agent are now moving on to Trump as a white supremacist who encourages by his rhetoric mass shootings. He is to blame for these mass shootings according to this idea.
  
  We note 1st of all that under Obama there were 20 mass shootings. No one ever blamed him for any of them.
  
  We note also that the second shooter in Ohio was a Satanist who supported Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders. He was encouraged it seems by the violence of Antifa. Who can say that he did not see what they did and just take it to the next level?
  
  The first shooter appeared to be a radical environmentalist. As was actually the shooter in New Zealand.

        As for the other comments above, mass shootings are not the same as terrorism based on this psychotic fear of invasion and replacement that drove the Christchurch cretin, and both the shooters over the weekend.

  But it won’t use less land and water. The dairy alternatives such as rice milk and almond milk use MUCH more water. The fashion for avocados and quinoa and all the other trendy vege foods are leading to deforestation and famine. Veges are grown in greenhouses to meet demand (water & power intensive). Fresh veges/ fruit all have higher food miles / costs as they have to be air freighted. And let’s not start on all the land used by “biofuels”.
  
  Veganism for the environment is just sloganeering. A moderate, balanced, and varied omnivorous diet is best for the human body, and the environment.

        I declared “victory”, because all of igm’s responses to me, going back several weeks, have consisted only of what he considers to be personal insults; he has no proposal to progress beyond his impotence.
        
        I’m going to explain where I’m coming from.
        
        Twenty-five years ago, I was in a position similar to the one igm finds himself in, but, instead of wanting to restrict local democracy, as he does – to those he approves of; those who own property, as if that is the only measure of the worth of people* – I wanted to enhance local democracy, by having local elections conducted by STV.
        
        * Are the tens of thousands of highly-educated young professionals pursuing their careers in Auckland, who cannot ever see themselves buying their own home, “bludgers”? According to igm they are.
        
        And that is what I, with one or two others, set out to do. I spent two years getting to grips with my subject, then six years going for it.
        
        I secured the support of my local MP. I wrote draft STV Option bills for Richard Northey (drawn from the ballot, and debated, in 1995) and Rod Donald (drawn from the ballot in 2000 – not debated; events overtook it).
        
        I contacted SOLGM (Society of Local Government Managers), giving them a presentation in June 1999. A few months later, they recommended to the incoming Labour government that STV be provided for as an option for local elections.
        
        Also in 2000, I worked with Internal Affairs officials on the government legislation that provided for STV. Officials accepted my recommendation that the counting of STV votes should be by Meek’s method.
        
        In other words, I put in the hard yards. I didn’t just bleat from the sidelines that things should be the way I want them, but not doing anything to make it happen.
        
        If igm is not prepared to spend several years of his life doing what is necessary to convince a future National-led government – starting with the spokesperson for Local Government, Jacqui Dean – to enact the necessary legislation restricting the local franchise to property owners, then the sum total of his achievement is to come across not only as a RWNJ, thrashing about impotently beneath a pseudonym, but also as a bitter, sour, sad, old man.
        
        So, I say again, given that we all know he is not going to do what is necessary, to get what he wants – and we all know why, as does he, don’t we? – instead falling back on the only “weapon” he has, that being to throw insults at me, I am entitled to claim victory.

      The Poll Tax is an alternative to rates, but the UK’s experience with it 25+ years ago (see the Wikipedia article I linked to yesterday), means no future National-led government will go near it. And rightly so, in my view.
      
      So, the question remains – how does igm get what he wants (being the local disenfranchisement of 40% of all adult New Zealanders, which he appears to have some support for here)? He can’t say, other than to now imply that “bludgers of society” (by his definition, anyone who doesn’t own property) should voluntarily decline to vote in local elections, such non-voting being “the better for all concerned” (presumably including themselves).   The Consul, Ruan Ping, issued a statement in response to MP Seymour’s demanding an explanation form the consulate for praising what it called the “spontaneous patriotism” of students in a scuffle at the University of Auckland during a Hong Kong democracy protest.
  
  Seymour said this appeared to be interfering in NZ’s internal affairs.

    In yesterday’s General Debate, poster Kowtow attacked the credibility of a South China Morning Post columnist, Alex Lo, who wrote that the Hong Kong police had been given carte blanche to suppress the protesters.
    
    “Wild guesses” was the term used by Kowtow.

On the matter of the OCR and the RBNZ. IMHO the RB and indeed all the Central Banks have got it wrong.
They continue to lower interest rates but still havent found a solution. The old saying goes when you keep trying something that isnt working you are bound to fail.

Again IMHO the optimum policy setting are as follows;

1. Inflation 2% to 3%.
2. Deposit rates 4% to 5%.
3. Borrowing rates 5% to 6%.

This will result in;

1. Inflation at a low but contained level.
2. Savers getting a reasonable return.
3. Banks getting a reasonable margin.
4. Borrowers paying a reasonable premium.

The race to the bottom will mean the lower rates go the faster and higher they will rebound.

For that reason as one who has no borrowing but modest assets as the rates go lower Im moving more into cash on the basis that the short term pain of low or minus returns will be more than out weighed when others sadly have to sell assets in order to meet their banks call on them.

As a capitalist and in the markets since my early 20s it pains me to have seen it all before and know the inevitable outcome.

  The Central banks have been printing money and done far too much of it. They have inflated asset prices beyond reason. Their friends have become barons unjustly enriched and the USA needs it for war financing. By letting their corporates loose as global “citizens” they reduced their ability drastically to tax them so leaving a deficit between hopes and reality.
  
  The rates above are reasonable in a reasonable world. My concern is that this abnormal state cannot continue forever. It’s a game at our expense. The notion that savers should not be rewarded is ludicrous. People do have an innate sense of value. Price is separate. NZ is not independent of the rest of the world–trade locks us in.
  
  Too much uncertainty is afoot at present. These next few months may be historic in the adjustments to come. The necessary adjustments possibly deferred and the international spat between Trump and the Rest of The World out of his control. China is now declining to buy US agricultural produce and rare earths possibiy withheld too. If the USA is involved in stirring up trouble in Hong Kong expect further economic repercussions. It may not be a shooting war but slow strangulation.

Bennett said she was told the complainants, some of whom worked in the Beehive and in the Prime Minister’s office, were feeling unsafe.

“They’ve have been told to keep quiet about what’s going on, that it should be kept as an internal process, advised not to go to the police.”

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern confirmed on Tuesday that the party conducted an internal investigation into the complaints, but that process was now being reviewed independently following further complaints.

At least a dozen complaints of sexual harassment in the Beehive, including the PM’s office, and the response appears to be tumbleweeds.

If the media moguls really want to know why newspapers are dying, this situation might be a really good place to start looking.

What I wouldn’t give for a serious investigative journalist in this country right now, but sadly it’s all about the spin, not the facts!

I despise what passes for the main stream media in this country, they’re a bunch of duplicitous writers of barely concealed propaganda.

The most interesting question that no-one seems to have asked this week, is “Who in the Prime Ministers Office has so much Juice that they are untouchable?”

I can only think of a couple of names – reading between the lines of course – that would have that much power.

Weird eh? I have never worked in an environment where a bully demanding sexual favours for promotion doesn’t get swiftly and brutally exited. Here we seem to have a cover-up, instructions to say nothing, statements that sexual assault and workplace bullying are “internal party matters”, and finally instructions to the victims not to go to certain places in order to avoid the individual.

What is it that the PM and Labour can’t understand about Sexual Assault and if it is alright now for them to take the side of a person obviously with some respect or ill judgement from the Prime Minister to have this hidden would it be alright if it happens to a Labour MP’s family member. It sickens me to think of the times this has happened in Labour and the innocent have become the victims of the Media, public and those that play the blame game.Three instances come to mind and they all involve the Labour Party with there arrogance in trying to covering them up. Darren Hughes chasing a naked young lad running away from a ex Labour MP with other intentions no charges arose, Young Labour Summer Camp Sexual assault on four people again Labour choose to try to silence all involved with the court case due in September after over a year of waiting to be heard, So now we have cover up of a person believed to be working for our Prime Minister who has lied her arse off trying to cover this sexual assault where over twelve people have complained and four that have canceled Labour Party membership for the way it has been handled with those that have complained brushed away like a piece of crap. I think it is time for Labour and those that have perpetrated these offenses whether the assault for the covering up to have compulsory tutoring on the facts of the meaning of what constitutes “Sexual Assaults ” rather do not seem to learn from previous happenings.

Tarrant killed 51 in Christchurch in one day. There was rightly, huge outrage and condemnation.

NZ stats indicate that about 35 Abortions happen every day. Most of our representatives want to make this process easier. No outrage, no condemnation.
So its wrong to shoot 51 people, but its OK to kill 12,823.

What I want from the pro abortion lobby is the succint and logical argument that absolutly explains when a fetus gains the status that Tarrant’s victims had. In other words the status of being worthy of not being killed. When does a fetus become a human?

Yesterday Maggy posted a comment in GD about criticism of the Royal Commission into the Christchurch Attacks.

The terms of reference for the inquiry are fairly clear: what did government agencies knew and did prior to the attack, what did the accused did prior to the attack, and what can be done to prevent further such attacks. I note that the terms, while a response based on the Christchurch attacks, are NOT Muslim specific. The terms also rule out agencies responses to the attack.

However, The Government expects that the inquiry will consult with the Muslim community whenever it needs to do so in order to discharge its responsibilities. The Commission created a Muslim Community Reference Group, with the following criteria: gender, ethnicity, age, religious diversity, and geography – [not that the shooter had these criteria]. This set up an unrealistic expectation that the Commission would hear about wider Muslim concerns about their {perceived) treatment within society, I believe, and the basis of their complaints. They happened to be the target this time, but perhaps not next time.

Contrary to Human Rights Commissioner Paul Hunt, the Commission is NOT a judicial body charged with providing justice (“justice was not only done, but seen to be done” he is quoted as saying).

The Commission is not about protecting future attacks on Muslims (alone), nor is it a forum for feelings. It is not a judicial body to provide justice. It is to get to the truth (even if this involves confidentiality and secrecy) about what government agencies did, and to provide recommendations that help prevent future attacks on any of us: Jews, Muslims, Pakeha, Maori, or any target.

    I don’t think that is true, The King. I have no evidence to suggest the Commissioners, who seem to be respected, will not do a good job. I suspect that the setting up, and membership criteria, of the Muslim Community Reference Group maybe an attempt to minimise a judicial review on lack of consultation grounds and representative grounds.
    Critics may want to use group for own agenda. I repeat, the Commission’s recommendations are NOT about Muslim attacks specifically.

      Here’s the problem ill define it more, these people are in a commission to find out the root cause of what caused the tragedy, due to taboos on race,ethnicity,religion they are already on course to never address anything.       How about addressing the effect of having a religious sect such as Islam living in the community with the rest of the community? .. it wouldn’t happen because they are restricted to their bias.

    Normally I would want commissions to be open. However, including media would encourage grandstanding by some irrelevant to the terms of the inquiry (eg racism, Islamophobia, white supremacy etc), covering their backsides by government officials, gaps in security to be exploited before being addressed, selective reporting (taking submissions out of context etc).
    
    It is far too important that politics is taken out so that the Commission can find out the facts and we can all have a safer society.
    
    There will be public sessions at some point, according to Commission. And of course they will report back in December, no doubt with a very large and detailed report, including sharing pertinent evidence presented.

        Maybe. It may find that several agencies were aware of either accused, gun club issues, or other data, that individually meant very little, but collectively should of raised a flag. That is what they are trying to find out. The Commission is also there to identify gaps and suggest solutions.
        
        The terms of the inquiry are quite narrow, and relate to government agencies actions prior to attacks, and to prevent attacks, rather than the underlying reasons for such attacks. It is not there to examine motivations and how to combat extremist views, although it will touch on this as background I would imagine. If National or ACT had concerns about the integrity of the commissioners, I think we would of heard by now.
        
        To have not recognised the Muslim community at all during the inquiry would of looked incredibly insensitive. Having said that, I think they have gone a bit overboard. That does not preclude other individuals and groups from making submissions.

Can you splash out on your credit card until you die then expect the bank to write off the debt?

Is this is what is suggested in Stuff today by Rob Stock, in his crusade against our trading banks?

The headline in Stuff, which is the leading ally of the Reserve Bank and the Labour Coalition Government in the stand-off with the trading banks, reads: “Debt collector called in to pursue dead man for credit card debt.”

Stock writes:

A dead man I knew was recently pursued by a debt collector for unpaid credit card debt.

It was a bit bizarre as the bank that issued the card had been told he was no longer among the living, and the estate had no money.

So, in our final days, are we morally and legally entitled to a blow out on borrowed funds without the lenders having the right to reclaim the money?

  The debt would be personal to the deceased unless the card issuer had someone else as security. That could be by way of a mortgage or guarantee. Banks are very astute at tying up their customers. Whenever one puts a signature on a bank document one may be giving them rights in relation to any other dealings one has had or might have–expect one has been hog tied.

I’m currently in Bangkok.
Yesterday we were out doing stuff, came home and turned on the TV.
The news was on and it’s no holds barred what they’ll show when it comes to violence, I’ll tell you.
One item, which was repeated several times, was a taxi driver put out a gun and shoot at the car in the adjacent lane over some perceived slight.
Next we’re shown cctv footage in hi-def of a car slowly pulling into a small street or driveway and running over a wee toddler.
Dead.
You know it’s dead because they fuzzed out the body on the picture. If it was alive they wouldn’t.
This is gruesome stuff, the like of which I’ve never seen on NZ TV.

  The manifesto is banned in NZ by the Chief Censor. His decision explaining the reason is publicly available on the Classification Office’s website (in fact the site helps you find it) and includes objectionable material from the manifesto.
  
  They do have a copyright notice on the decision document:
  Copyright Office of Film and Literature classification. This document may not be reproduced in whole or in part by any means in any form without written permission except for brief quotations embodied in articles, reports or
  reviews.
  Fairly sure you cannot quote the objectionable material.
  OIA overides the copyright notice I suspect.
  
  So, Justitia, we have a strange situation where we can legally view objectionable parts of the manifesto, but not any of the non-objectionable (well, not in a legal sense) parts.

  MPs are representative so should represent the majority views of their electors. The Brexit question was simple leave or stay and the answer was leave by majority so the job of MPs was to arrange an exit but they disagreed with the result and lied to electors in a General Election saying they would exit then did everything to prevent an exit. In doing so they demonstrated that they actually represented their own view and like minded others ensuring that the clamour for Binding referenda will increase as Trust in the Political class diminishes to the point of being non existent.Anarchy will follow.

In today’s Herald they’ve reprinted an article from the Washington Post around the subject of alternative power sources.

Filmmaker Michael Moore’s producer Jeff Gibbs took a deep dive look at alternative fuels and power sources and finds out that not is all as it seems.

What if alternative energy isn’t all it’s cracked up to be? That’s the provocative question explored in the documentary Planet of the Humans, which is backed and promoted by filmmaker Michael Moore and directed by one of his longtime collaborators.

Director Jeff Gibbs takes on electric cars, solar panels, windmills, biomass, biofuel, leading environmentalist groups like the Sierra Club, and even figures from Al Gore and Van Jones, who served as Barack Obama’s special adviser for green jobs, to 350.org leader Bill McKibben, a leading environmentalist and advocate for grassroots climate change movements.

Gibbs, who produced Moore’s Bowling for Columbine and Fahrenheit 9/11, didn’t set out to take on the environmental movement. He said he wanted to know why things weren’t getting better.

But when he started pulling on the thread, he and Moore said they were shocked to find how inextricably entangled alternative energy is with coal and natural gas, since they say everything from wind turbines to electric car charging stations are tethered to the grid, and even how the Koch brothers are tied to solar panel production through their glass production business.

“It turned out the wakeup call was about our own side,” Gibbs said in a phone interview. “It was kind of crushing to discover that the things I believed in weren’t real, first of all, and then to discover not only are the solar panels and wind turbines not going to save us … but (also) that there is this whole dark side of the corporate money … It dawned on me that these technologies were just another profit center.”

Both know the film is going to be a “tough pill to swallow.” It was a difficult eye-opener for them as well.

“We all want to feel good about something like the electric car, but in the back of your head somewhere you’ve thought, ‘Yeah, but where is the electricity coming from? And it’s like, ‘I don’t want to think about that, I’m glad we have electric cars,'” Moore said.

“I’ve passed by the windmill farms, and oh it’s so beautiful to see them going, and don’t tell me that we’ve gone too far now and it isn’t going to save us … Well, my feeling is just hit me with everything. I’m like let’s just deal with it now, all at once.”

“I like so many people in the film and I’m one of those people who wanted to believe all of these years that that was the right path,” Moore said. “(But) I refuse to let us die out. I refuse to let this planet die.”

Of course it is all being blamed on overcrowding – not doubt caused by colonialism and not the woman having over 6 kids.

Let’s dig a bit… The baby had a blood alcohol level over 6 times the legal driving limit. This is supposed to have happened by passing alcohol through breast milk.

The baby had a blood alcohol level of 308 mg per 100ml of blood – or in other words – 3grammes of alcohol per litre.

The mammalian miracle essentially converts the mother’s blood fluids into milk. To manufacture milk that would get a baby 6 times over the limit would, I believe, require the mother to have blood alcohol levels somewhere around that of beer – ie at least 2% or about 40 times over the legal driving limit.

It is my belief that this is many times more than would have been fatal for the mother.

Therefore I struggle to believe that the baby died from alcohol from a drunk mother’s breast milk .

I would love to be proved wrong. Perhaps some biologist could check the numbers.

    I see widespread applause for holding to account and justice (of sorts) for major and long term abuse of media power.
    
    What’s in it for Matt? Why would he bother? The toxic stuff once written up here about him is long gone, thanks to Matt’s efforts through the courts. The whaleoil site itself is worth nothing now, but it’s also worth everything.
    
    All those other people, the ones who like Matt were slandered, bullied and humiliated on that blog over all those years — the horrible stories about them are still out there, recurrent reminders of vicious attacks. People like the woman I interviewed who was still too shaky to tell me what had happened but who simply googled herself and silently showed me the result on her phone; people like Scott Poynting, who knows that anyone googling him runs immediately into the whaleoil accusations against him. There are many, many such people.
    
    I’m happy to help speak for such people.
    
    Apologists and supporters of a dirty and toxic era won’t deter that.

I was paying passing attention to the Genter/Lesterletter, and wondering at her ability to discount any consideration of the opinion of voters, when it occurred to me that MPs who have access to Parliament on the List have no real appreciation of how hard it is to win enough votes to be elected as an electorate MP. As far as they are concerned THEIR opinions are what count and the voters are irrelevant.
So, how about limiting the List MPs to those who have already shown respect to the voters by working hard enough to get elected for a couple of terms. That would, as my Old Mum would say, separate the wheat from the chaff.

Sadly, a mate of mine died today while on the waiting list for heart surgery. He was due his operation in April but was “pushed back” by the DHB until sometime possibly never.

He died of a heart attack today which will be seen as a “win” by the DHB. One off the waiting list and a zero cost to them… The coalition of liars will be grateful as it is one less “uncounted” stat for them.

Emerging implies it was bad, but is emerging from that state (ie. getting better).

But wait, what are the real facts?

Meanwhile, an oil and gas lobby group are refuting the industry gets special tax treatment.

Petroleum Exploration and Production Exploration Association of New Zealand chief executive Cameron Madgwick said last year the issue was investigated by the Productivity Commission.

It concluded that ‘New Zealand provides only minor (less than $4 million a year) government support to activities with some relationship to fossil-fuel production and consumption’, he said.

“There are no direct subsidies for our industry. In fact, we are a major net contributor to New Zealand. The Government receives 42 per cent of all profit from most producing fields, with an average of $500m per year in taxes and royalties going to the Crown.”

Greens using crooked figures it seems, and deluded to think that their zealotry won’t cost NZ’ers in higher energy costs, with the poor disproportionally affected paying for “rich-prick Green MP” madness!
