Auckland declares a climate emergency yesterday. And the first thing that happens is that a lobby group wants the council to put its money (ratepayer and taxpayer’s) where there mouths are. So, the following morning Goofy is on the radio telling the sheeple what the council will do to reduce climate emissions. And of course there will be further calls on our pockets. How predictable!
Sorry, where are the rational voices to call this out for the Male bovine excrement that this is?

    I’ve saved them some money and started the Climate Change policy document for them: Policy 1. Council’s onsite catering will now be climate friendly vegan meals and cricket flour breads and baked goods.
    Policy 2. All elected members and management free car parks will be sold off. Elected members will need to use public transport, cycleways, or pay for parking at Wilsons.
    Policy 3. Council will no longer reimburse elected members for petrol expenses of private vehicles.

  So that’s it? What is the government going to to do with electric cars? If people want electric cars, car dealers will import them.
  
  This is the problem. If the situation really is an “emergency”, the council should take drastic measures. Reduce private car use in Auckland by a punitive car park tax in Central Auckland. Ban all non essential car travel by Council employees.
  
  There will be no actions in Auckland commensurate with an emergency.
  
  It is unwise got governments to debase the noun “emergency”. Because one day there will be a real emergency.

    And how to power these electric cars? Generating capacity is very limited now with no new hydro storage (snails etc), no nuke (devil take it), no new oil or gas (captains call), no more coal mines (more snails etc) and so-called renewables such as wind (snigger) and solar meaning massive investment for bugger all return.
    In a nutshell we can’t run more electric cars, trucks, trains and busses without a huge increase in generation but of course “hydrogen”; yeah right no one else has figured out yet how to get that one producing economically so that’s still pie in the sky for a while yet.
    Never mind, feelz will fix it all.

    srylands, as is par for the course, Goff is being a typical disenguous teller of half truths here.
    
    Auckland, under the mayorlty of Goff has since 2017 have had a policy of electrifying Auckland’s Transport network. Goff, along with mayors from 39 other cities around the world has signed an accord to have their cities carbon neutral by 2040. One of the key planks here is the electrification of each city’s PT network (in Auckland’s case that is 1,350 buses) and 20 plus ferries.
    
    At this point that is where reality and the thinking of the fruit cakes diverges. Current electric bus technologies are not up to spec for Auckland, because:
    1. they are only suitable on some routes in Auckland -too many hills and distance;
    2. Auckland’s current electricity network needs upgrading (at a cost between $45m and $50m for electric buses alone);
    3. The batteries on a single decker bus adds an extra 80kg to the bus which equals 1 less person per bus, meaning Auckland will need another 50 to 70 buses added to the fleet (let alone the problems caused by the Employment Relations Act);
    4. Then there is the added cost of making operators fit recharging stations to their depots. Who picks up this added cost?
    5. As I said above, the technology is not fully developed, the life span of batteries is a max of 5 to 8 years. Who will pick up the cost of replacement and disposal of batteries?
    6. Then there is the disposal of the bus when it has reached the end of it’s useful life. Usually, buses are disposed of after 20 years, but who is going to buy an electric bus, which needs specialized recharging equipment?
    7. There are other issues that are confidential and are problematic, and for which there is no obvious solution other that wasting shed loads of ratepayers’ money.
    
    So as I said this nutty policy and reality are in two different worlds. But it is all about “feelz” and “dealing with the consequences of climate change & impending emergency”.

I doubt the admiral will be giving up his superior pay , quarters and conditions . I see from the photo he likes his British style uniform , salute , hat , symbols of authority and medals , I’ll take him at his word when he turns up on parade naked but for a Gandhi style loin cloth , yeah didn’t think so.

      Did you read the article, Rachael? What I took from it was that this admiral wants to see the chain of command operating on discipline and respect rather than servility and sycophancy, and to remove some of the more excessive frippery that frequently occured. To me, it seems he wants to move India more in line with most modern navies (I doubt that the even UK, for instance, still follows some of the practises that he wants to see cease). From the article, I thought it sounded like a good thing, and that appearing at parade naked save a loin cloth was unnecessary.

  He was ultimately responsible for pre-budget security within Treasury and failed his political masters with this. It does not matter how the breach occurred, it is his problem. It is dancing on the head of a pin arguing that it is not Treasury’s fault because Treasury was the victim of an alleged cyber crime.
  Treasury deals with much sensitive information so their systems need to be secure. Putting the unpublished Budget web pages on the public facing web server was just plain daft.

    There has been under investment in New Zealand’s military capability for years. The NZDF have had to make do with aging equipment, particularly the Hercules, which have compromised the operational effectiveness of the NZDF.
    In the event of a civilian catastrophe such as an earthquake or storm event, the NZDF would struggle to assist, due largely to being under equipped to deal with emergencies.
    In terms of combat readiness the NZDF have been woefully underequipped and have had to rely upon resources from our coalition partners Australia and the US, much to the embarrasement of our own NZDF.
    So it comes as no surprise that Ron showed some emotion, that finally through him, the NZDF can hold their heads up.

    Very easy to sort this, please name just 10 people that were “stolen”?
    There must be thousands, surely somone somewhere can string 10 names together, have yet to see this.
    A person being removed to safety from being raped or abused is not turning them into a white person. There are white people that do the same, but the stats say at a much lower rate.

      The ‘myth of the stolen generation’ is that Aborigine children were removed because purely because they were Aborigine.
      It seems they were removed for their own safety. Iirc, a lot of analysis of every case proved this and that none were removed because they were aboriginal.
      One of the effects of correcting the ‘myth’ is that sadly some children were sent home where they ended up being abused again.
      Alcoholism, domestic and sexual abuse is still rampant in many communities.
      It’s pretty awful.

        Wasn’t meaning to quote you, I’d generally use blockquote for that. Just paraphrasing the sentiments.
        Many children were taken from their homes on the flimsiest of pretexts. There was no mechanism for parents to protest. The policies were applied systematically to aboriginal communities. I don’t know why anyone would want to pretend these horrible things were just fine. It’s not even as if this was the worst part of the destruction visited on the indigenous societies.

      The sentence of this foreign perpetrator of serious crimes in our country has become, effectively, a minimum period of imprisonment of five years, after which he will be deported. Too light, in my view, for convictions for two violent rapes. One could only speculate about how serious convictions would have to be before a Judge would apply preventive detention.

        I have to disagree with this statement.
        Clearly you are not necessarly deported regarding a 5 year sentence, I thought Jan Antolik aka Karel got over 5 years, half a dozen experts in immigration reviewed the file over six months, and then the minister gave him a free pass.
        If this guy is anything to go on, not only is the 5 years totally irrelevant, there was a notice to remove teflon Antolik on 30th April 2004, around 5,500 days ago, since then he has seen off 6 immigration ministers and is still here.
        This guy is the supreme teflon man, or immigration couldn’t fight their way out of a paper bag.
        Nzohabana staying is looking a reality.
        Softly, Softly Judge, Hopeless Immigration system, hopeless minister, the stars are all lining up for him to keep spreading his one sided idea of lovemaking.

  Maggie pie – a very disturbing and sad case. One of the issues in this particular case is race. African people coming to New Zealand tend to stand out. There are not many black people in New Zealand. I do believe this causes issues of loneliness and finding it hard to fit in. There are also major cultural issues with African countries as compared to New Zealand culture.
  
  So I do think we have to be prudent about our immigration system. It is not easy for African people to fit in here, to feel at home. We should take that into account in our immigration decisions in my opinion.

        Just pointing out that if our objective is to integrate refugees into New Zealand we should consider ethnic and cultural groups with a proven track record who are more likely to contribute in the long term to New Zealand’s prosperity.
        
        It is also a trifle ironic that Africans of Dutch descent self identify as Afrikaaners (Africans) and Africans of English descent tend to identify with their culture, English (colonial really) and only invoke “African” in order to screw up diversity stats.

I know black Africans who involve themselves in work, community groups, churches and soon have lots of friends. Very few Kiwis would reject friendship because of someone’s colour, and they wouldn’t be worth the effort anyway!
    
    However, if people don’t involve themselves and don’t make an effort to get reasonably fluent in English, that can cause loneliness, no doubt.

The last 1 News Colmar Brunton Poll in Preferred Prime Minister percentages shows:
Ardern 45, Collins 6, and Bridges and Peters both 5
Of other sitting members, Shane Jones got 0, and others 3.8 altogether
John Key got 0.9 and Helen Clark 0.1

So they all account for 65.8%

Then there are Other 2%, None 3%, Refused 2% and
Don’t Know 28%

Which means compared to Ardern’s total of 45% just over half that number (62.2% of Ardern’s total) or almost six times what Bridges and Winston got each (28% versus 6%), haven’t a fucking clue who they want as Prime Minister to run the country.

And while Winston appointed Ardern to be Prime Minster (by selecting a coalition with the party she leads) and he himself arranged to be Deputy Prime Minister, Ardern’s support is nine times that of Winston – an interesting reflection on the man who put her where she is.
They’re polls apart, so to speak, and without even mentioning the Newshub attempt.

    Unfortunately the “best soundbites” won enough votes for labour in 2017. Those soundbites were incorrectly interpreted as possible policies, which they clearly are not.
    
    “what’s in it for wynston” “promised” 2 main policies would be “bottom”lines”.
    
    maori electoral seats gone and immigration reduced to 10,000. Neither of those were ever likely to see the light of day and my guess is that they never even made the negotiating table.
    
    The media “liked” the labour soundbites as they were for people with a very short attention span and no desire to absorb or learn the facts.
    
    National “lost” the narrative with media complicity and assumed that their superior policies would win the day. Had they been willing to trumpet them more loudly and more succinctly (read one liners for the masses and media) then they would have won by a landslide.
    
    They foolishly assumed they would get fair coverage in the media and they did not.

Yesterday in Parliament Jacinda Arden repeatedly said that the CoL didn’t know what had happened to Treasury’s computers in the hours between being told that there was no hack (Tues Night) and the admission that there was no illegal access (5am, Thurs Morning).

So is she telling everyone that the NZ Government didn’t believe the GCSB was up to the task of determining if a hack had occurred,
or is she telling us that the CoL had no idea if Treasury’s computer systems were secure?

Whichever one it is, it demonstrates that the country is being run by a bunch of amateurs.

    I believe the issue is semantic: “hack” means different things to different people. To a tech like the GCSB it’s a serious backdoor attempt like our 5-Eyes connection to intercept info. To most others it typically means “someone got our files”.
    
    If documents are left uncovered their reading may be unauthorised. However web pages are hard to protect and Google and others can copy them unawares. If they then appear in a regular search isn’t there then an implicit authorisation?

  Anyone who has ever worked in or near the Public Service is well aware that Makhlouf would not have made the statements that he did without the full approval from his minister.
  
  He would have been well aware that his statement was crossing into the “political arena” and there is no way he would willingly go there.
  
  There is also no way that roberstson would have allowed this without express permission from ardern.
  
  This looks to me that it was an “off the cuff” decision made by ardern and robertson who felt they could “do this” without running it past h2.

A friend of my partners just got back from a holiday in Thailand and called over last night to drop us off a couple of fake Rolex’s. He only ever flys Air New Zealand and we asked him what he thort about them now allowing the crew to have visible tattoos? It didn’t bother him too much, in fact he was telling us that he used to date an Air NZ hostie who had an amazingly detailed ‘sea-shell’ tattooed on her inner thigh. He reckoned if you put your ear on it you could smell the ocean.

  The rules have not changed regarding the wearing of helmets for either cycles or motor cycles but if you live in a Labour run city it appears that obeying some traffic rules are merely optional. This then also means that footpaths become cycle ways. You can also operate powered scooters and bicycles on the footpaths with or without helmets at unregulated speeds endangering pedestrians. This is apparently allowed for commercial operators to carry out their businesses. If you are Lime Scooters you get Mike Williams ex Labour Party President to lobby the Labour run Councils to apparently have optional rules. Woe betide you

      Partly true Tall Man however the 10 year old who flaunted the road rules ending up being turned into a vegetable state from head injuries. Even with a silly cycle hat it is doubtful if the outcome would have been any different. This whole fiasco could have been prevented if he had opted to ride on the footpath for short distance to avoid a delay at the Give Way he ignored. A frequent bypass used by other children.

    Robertson in particular is wholly responsible for the behaviour and conduct of Makhlouf. Instead of hanging his CEO out to dry through his obfuscation and half-truths, he should accept that a major f*ck-up happened in his Ministry, and at the very least, offer his resignation.

        Nice, Tony. So it’s this afternoon that everything will be exposed at question time.
        You don’t seem to have much idea about how the doctrine of ministerial responsibility works, or how the public service is actually regulated.
        It’s nice to imagine that any kind of mistake leads to the humiliatio and resignation of politicians you don’t like – but it doesn’t work that way.
        New Zealand ministers do not resign for departmental failings, and very seldom do they resign at all, as opposed to being sacked by the prime minister.
        The departmental failings are being investigated, as they should. No amount of PQs and blogging will prompt any political fallout in adcance of that inquiry being completed, reported, and no doubt critiqued.

From the article in Stuff yesterday it sounds like the Wellington Tapu te Ranga marae buildings had building warrants of fitness. That is not a rubber stamp from the council. So an independent qualified person (IQP) tested the systems and signed them off year after year.

This needs an immediate and serous investigation.

    Sadly in the case of South Africa the writing was only the wall early on.
    
    One only has to do some basic maths to understand the abject failure of their education system, leaving 70% of the population unemployable in a formal economy.
    
    Couple that with the reality that the educated are in a position to and frequently do leave for greener pastures and you come to the conclusion that a country built on Gold and Platinum will eventually run out of money.

    From what I’m reading the “extreme left-leaning views” aren’t really considered extreme anymore, if anything they’re considered mainstream and the opposite point of view is now the extreme view.
    
    Looking back I think John Key has actually pretty much destroyed the centre-right, Key was never a politician he was a business guy and looked at voters the same way a business looks at clients.
    
    Ideology didn’t get a look in with Key, all he wanted to do was win and he’d take whatever steps were required to get a win so he and National could concentrate on the higher level wheeling and dealing stuff.
    
    That’s why he never rolled back any of Clark’s policies and instead cemented them in place because that’s what he believed would enable National to win.
    
    Unfortunately, we’ve now had two decades of labour/Green party indoctrination through schools and the media
    
    That’s had a huge effect on the last couple of generations.
    
    Sure some will go National but far more will stay Labour/Greens, the balance has well and truly shifted in favour of the left.
    
    Unless National gets a bit more hands on that balance will keep shifting further left

Today, the Press, in an editorial that could be devastating for subscriptions, criticises the rugby authorities for not changing the name of the beloved local rugby team, the Crusaders, because of the mosques massacre and because of the origin of the name nearly a thousand years ago.

Since the massacres, polls have shown overwhelming support of fans for retaining the name, Crusaders, which has long since come to mean virtually any hearty public campaign.

If the Christchurch Press were locally owned, in fact probably if it were owned by anyone except Al Jazeera or Gulf billionaires, there is no way the newspaper would take such a stand against its great local rugby heroes, who are having an excellent year on rugby fields.

Makhlouf has a job lined up with Ireland’s treasury, and Ireland will be looking closely at this fiasco, what it means is that Makhlouf has no loyalty to Robertson/Little/Ardern and is looking to his his new job stability….I think Labour are wrong thinking he will just slink off quietly taking all the blame!

        Total succesful convictions Aus and NZ, Zero.
        Working well in Aussie, one overturned conviction, convicted 5 years ago. Lower estimate is 4,000 a year being butchered, so conviction rate not looking good at all.
        This pratice especially stage 2 and 3 is abysmal and sick violence on a fellow human being, anyone excusing it is barbaric, regardless of race or religion.
        On those figures, I guess NZ has at least 10 a week, 500 a year.

In the latest episode of the trump files, Donald Trump’s former campaign manager Paul Manafort is being sent to solitary confinement in Rikers prison while awaiting trial on state charges.

This despite Manafort being found guilty in federal court and sentenced to 7 years in prison. He will be held in solitary confinement (for his own safety). Solitary confinement is a cruel punishment that is designed to break the will of a person. He was held in solitary confinement last year and that has broken his health. Now having been sent to jail he is being transferred to an awful prison while awaiting trial on state charges.

This can only be seen as vindictive punishing of Mr Manafort for the crime of supporting the presidential campaign of Donald Trump. This is cruel and unusual punishment and give some insight into the left’s hatred of Donald Trump and their desire to punish vindictively his friends and associates.

Normally the media would raise an outcry about this kind of call and unusual punishment. But because he has committed the sin of supporting the presidency of Donald Trump and because he is white and male and elderly he is not a high priority.

However what stands out for me is the utter vindictiveness of the left. They appear to be willing to hound this man to his grave.

    SGA – read the article that I have linked to. It appears that in Rikers Mr Manafort will be locked up for 23 hours a day in a small cell with only a tiny slit of a window for light.
    
    What could have happened is that he would have stayed in a lower security prison until his trial. But it appears that he is being punished and relentlessly persecuted by the leftists in the criminal justice system of New York who just hate Donald Trump and want to get at anyone associated with him.
    
    Generally solitary confinement is used for the worst criminals who are a danger to themselves and to others. Mr Manafort does not fit any of those categories.

      Are the conditions of Manafort’s isolation from the general population really the same as those who are in solitary confinement as a punishment? (My guess would be not, but I’m happy to be corrected)

Mark Levin interviews Democrat pollster Mark Penn who worked on both Bill and Hillary Clinton’s campaigns.

He explained to Levin that “investigations of the president, of the campaign, of the administration, of the president’s family, done with methods that were really meant to investigate people, not crimes, and things that seem to me to be way over the bounds of the Constitution.”

“No one can be an effective president, or as effective as they could be, if they are under constant threats and investigations,” Penn added.

The longtime Democratic political adviser recalled that after the impeachment of then-President Bill Clinton in 1998, he had hoped the country would never go through something like it again.

He observed what the Democrats are doing now is “even worse” than what happened then.

Penn stated that Democratic leaders are no longer engaged in “legitimate legislative inquiry” through the many subpoenas and demands for personal financial and business records.

“Now saying: ‘Hey let’s get some of these tax returns — oh, let’s get the tax returns of their children, their family. Let’s go back in history,’ that’s government-financed opposition research, that’s not legitimate legislative inquiry,” the former White House aide said.

  I go back to when the story broke that they said that staff knew on Sunday night that there was suspicious activity going on. Now it would of taken a few minutes at the most to track the ip to being in parliament. JLL’s report shows Christchurch retail rents are about one third of Auckland’s in prime areas.

In the first quarter Christchurch suburban retail rents fell 6.5 per cent and were now between $325 a square metre and $750sqm.

In the CBD retail rents were stable within a wide range from $475sqm to $1000sqm. Secondary CBD retail rents were falling and were between $250sqm and $500sqm, down 3.2 per cent.

Transactions in Christchurch showed office rents were under pressure and still declining.

Prime CBD office rents fell from $340sqm to $325sqm, 4.4 per cent. Secondary CBD office rents fell even more from $243sqm to $213sqm, a 12.4 per cent decline.

Suburban offices did not fare better with prime space decreasing 3.4 per cent to $213sqm and secondary decreasing 11.8 per cent to $150sqm.

The industrial market was active with a wide variety of tenants looking to secure space. Vacancy rates remained low and rent levels were rising in some sectors.
