Mr Twyford running away from the BuildNZ Kiwibuild Summit later this month. He was to be the keynote speaker but has to be in Wellington that day.

It’s a three day event, and surely the organisers could rearrange his session.

Maybe there’s another reason he is not going to attend.

Not to worry, Ms Salesa will be attending.

  Agreed. Climate change is not an emergency.
  
  Just being a serious problem doesn’t make something an emergency. An emergency is something that appears suddenly and unexpectedly, requiring immediate action. Climate change is none of those things. It’s been known about for a long time (even if its taken a while to convince some people), and the timescale for both taking action and the consequences to materialize is years or decades.
  
  City councils declaring climate change an emergency is just as wrong as Trump declaring the situation on the US southern border an emergency, for exactly the same reasons. The only difference is Trump’s declaration does something by (legitimately or not) giving him additional powers. The council declarations achieve exactly nothing.

    Climate ‘change’ is a natural occurrence that has been going on since the beginning of the earth. It is most certainly not an emergency. The only harmful effect of the present hysteria is the mental health damage being done to children ann those who are easily influenced. And the illegal migration across the southern US border IS a genuine emergency. Imagine 140,000 people a month (May’s figure – and undoubtedly understated) flooding uncontrolled into NZ.

      Kabull – quite agree that the border of the United States is an emergency. Over 1 million people per year have been coming over the southern border illegally, claiming asylum. And then because there are not enough detention facilities they are released into the United States to appear in court at a later date. 90% of them never appear to their court date!
      
      The bigger issue is the issue of sovereignty. Without a border the United States is no longer a sovereign country. If an army of one million people can just cross into your country at any time then you do not have a sovereign nation.
      
      This is a problem in New Zealand as well. Not so much illegal immigration. But huge numbers of legal immigrants coming into our country and changing the nature and composition of our population. Add to this the large number of refugees that our Prime Minister wants to take predominantly from Muslim countries and we can see plenty of problems on the horizon.
      
      The solution is to cut immigration and allow the population to assimilate the newcomers. We need to improve our economy and our productivity. Just importing 70,000 foreigners every year is not a wise long-term solution!

        Wise words, Scott. The way in which recent NZ administrations have handled immigration assures disastrous consequences within a very short timespan. It used to be that people who came here were expected to adopt the NZ ways and culture and, by and large, leave what they left behind. Look at what’s happened to London, of all places – and that’s exactly what’s going to happen here.

      That number illegally crossing is an invasion but Trump has sorted it – Mexico didn’t like the idea of a 5% Tariff on exports to the US increasing by 5% a month so they are dealing with the invaders in Mexico – armed troops are persuading the invaders to go elsewhere.   I don’t know who started this trend.
  
  Since 1997 New Zealand governments have been declaring targets, strategies, and now emergencies. However the policies to materially reduce greenhouse emissions are politically unpalatable. To put it mildly. The best thing we could do to reduce emissions is to discourage tourists from flying all the way to New Zealand.
  
  Ultimately emissions will materially decline when enabling technologies emerge at competitive prices. And there is nothing Auckland Council can do to change that.

    Why spend huge sums trying to reduce ‘greenhouse emissions’ when the greenhouse panic is as stupid as the sea level rise. I have no issue with pollution reduction, as the state of the atmosphere and environment is important, but I am unable to be convinced that CO2 and climate change is a genuine threat to our future. Observe:
    – the Maldives were supposed to be uninhabitable by now, yet the Chinese are building new airport and tourist facilities;
    – the Chinese have built islands in the South China Sea that have an elevation of less than 5m;
    – South Pacific atolls are in many cases growing rather than sinking.
    – Islands along the boundary of the Australian and Pacific plates are sinking because they are in the subduction zone.

  Disappointing that Phil Goff, who is more than “old” enough to remember many other such chicken-little claims over the last few decades (global cooling, acid rain, running out of oil etc) as NEVER ever eventuating is supporting this “Climate Change Emergency” BS.
  
  Goff has stated that what this BS means in practical terms is that a Framework will be developed which will lead to an Action Plan.
  
  Translation = rate payers will be screwed over more because a raft of mega$$ paid Consultants, Experts (and no doubt former Labour politicians) will spend months/years wasting energy drafting up reports. No doubt it will end up costing ratepayers millions of dollars and all for what when that money could be saved by applying common-sense (buy fuel efficient ACC vehicle fleet, deal with sewerage waste discharges, upgrade infrastructure etc)!

  It’s harder than one might think, questioning a politician. Look how easy it is for them to dodge questions in parliament. How much easier it is, then, to bat aside questions from journalists?
  When people really don’t like particular politicians, they strongly feel that their hate has a rational basis and that it must be easy for others to see that politician in a similar light.

This means that the prime minister and the finance minister were told there was no “hack” two hours after statements were issued that said the Budget information released by National was obtained in that way.

But Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters was not holding back when he spoke to media this afternoon. [ May 29 ]
 He said the information obtained by National had been acquired illegally.
 Asked if he had seen evidence which proved this, Peters said: “Of course”.
When pressed on how he knew, Peters said it was “my job to know”. 
“Information came to them [National] in circumstances where the behaviour was totally illegal and they should have known it,” Peters, said.
 “All I can tell you, whilst I’m not prepared to go public with it, is … the facts look very, very bad for the National Party.”

The drip feed policy of Genter’s appears to be yet another CoL policy not thought through.

Yes, they had the working group, but her policy appears to have been to have a revenue grab. So, now there is push back, and a back track by the minister on the cameras and the policy to reduce speed limits.

Her policy has all the hallmarks of ideology before strategy and thinking through outcomes.

This morning on RNZ it was reported:
1. Speeds will not be reduced on 87% of NZ roads as the “NZTA were recommending”. Really? It was her policy, and NZTA did as they were told.
2. Genter is quoted saying she would prefer that no revenue is collected from speed cameras, if NZ implements the Swedish model.
The issue for Genter is that the Swedish govt has and continues to invest in their motorway network (some 8,000km) and warns motorists of speed cameras. Neither of which Genter was planning on.

Genter is a dangerous ideologue and should not be anywhere near government.

      I don’t think so (but happy to be corrected). Plenty of people here follow ideologies, and would argue that evidence supports their belief in them (e.g., involving private property, free market, democracy, and the rights of the individual). True, the more sensible ones balance their ideological beliefs with a degree of pragmatism.
      To me, what you describe is more a definition of an ideologue – an adherent of an ideology, especially one who is uncompromising and dogmatic (and there are probably a few of those floating around here too).

Some are pragmatistics at heart but lean towards particular ideologies, others are more ideological but with varying degrees of pragmatism, others are so ideologically driven that they are, for practical intents and purposes, ideologues (whether they be those who know the price of everything and value of nothing, or those who know the value of everything and the price of nothing 🙂 ).

    But a public servant (as MPs, especially Ministers are) should be dealing in facts etc in an unbiased way, not just pushing their favourite advocacy.
    
    If someone working at the police station counter handed out religious tracts to everyone that came to make a statement that would not be acceptable. If courts used the bible to determine if someone is guilty that would not be acceptable.

  Ross Ardern was the police commissioner from 2005-2009. Speed cameras were everywhere collecting revenue back then. National all but phased them out in their last stint.
  
  Now his daughter is Prime Minister – everyone is getting pinged left, right and center. And it’s not just cameras. There is a massive campaign on to bring in coin. I have seen them pulling up and ticketing elderly women on a very safe stretch of road.

JLL’s report shows Christchurch retail rents are about one third of Auckland’s in prime areas.

In the first quarter Christchurch suburban retail rents fell 6.5 per cent and were now between $325 a square metre and $750sqm.

In the CBD retail rents were stable within a wide range from $475sqm to $1000sqm. Secondary CBD retail rents were falling and were between $250sqm and $500sqm, down 3.2 per cent.

Transactions in Christchurch showed office rents were under pressure and still declining.

Prime CBD office rents fell from $340sqm to $325sqm, 4.4 per cent. Secondary CBD office rents fell even more from $243sqm to $213sqm, a 12.4 per cent decline.

Looking forward to Costco arriving. In Oz their prices are 25% to 30% cheaper than competitors.

They cover lots of sectors not just food.

Time we had some real competition instead of the monopoly and duopoly we have had for decades.

Hopefully Aldi will follow and then we will have a fully competitive market.

Valued at 6.5 billion has 6.5 billion in debt and has lost 40% of its value since 2012, currently selling off assets like Tip Top to get the debt levels down.

I reckon they’ll sell it to the Chinese before it goes completely tits up, what a disaster.

Yet another example was on RNZ news this morning that NZ’s Muslim community has been emboldened to be more demanding by 15/03/19 events in Christchurch.

Yesterday, Dame Patsy Reddy opened a new hall at an Islamic School in West Auckland (New Lynn).

In the next breath the Islamic community made it known they want more such schools.

Message to the Islamic community of NZ, faith based schools are private schools that meet national curriculum standards. Pay for them yourselves and ensure they meet the National Curriculum and you can have them. This is not the middle East or the UK, so take your demands elsewhere!

        Ok then, I’ll tell you. When the Catholic schools were collapsing in the 1970s, the church cut a special deal with the government to have the taxpayers fund them. One of the unfortunate effects of that was that other schools could claim to have a ‘special character’ (religious, mainly). So instead of taxpayers being forced to fund religious education for catholics only, we can now pay for jews, muslims, presbyterians, or whoever to get their children indoctrinated in the superstition of their choice.

The catholic quasi-monopoly on urban schooling is utter shite with kids and parents being forced to lie and deceive to get into the best local schools – what a terrible life lesson for a child. Let kids get a completely secular schooling, without branding and associated cause for ostracism, so that they are more free to choose their own path in adulthood.   Item on Red Radio this morning with *no single query* about teaching islamic values (which ones exactly, what about the ones that do conflict with NZ law, like wife beating??) and at muslim children feeling NZ schools have not helped them in their ‘identity’ (why is their identity so focused on their religion?)
  
  The item was all just fairy dust and rainbows, no queries at all about which values will be taught and whether other values won’t be, because they do conflict with NZ law.
  
  Basically: what will be taught, the values of Mecca or Medina?

      mikey, never having been to a religious based school I cannot comment directly but I did have mates and a few young ladies as aquaintances that did. My understanding was that they weren’t vastly different to the schooling I received but can we say that about a muslim school.

Forestry and Regional Economic Minister Shane Jones is adamant the Billion Trees Programme is on track despite worker shortages.

… Prue Younger, from the Forest Industry Contractors Association, wanted faster access to migrant labour saying it takes months to get immigration approval.
Ms Younger said the industry wanted to train up New Zealanders, but that would take time.
“To get them actually trained up, give them the culture and the life skills that they need, whereas we’ve got migrants coming in from Suva, who desperately want the work, work really hard and are fantastic workers,” she said.

This is apparently ‘balanced’ by another media item where Nathan Fogden, a forestry contractor, says –
He was hiring Pacific Island workers who had been a fantastic addition to the workforce, but there was a huge challenge to get them here and keep them here. He said he wanted workers for the long-term because they take several months to go through training.

So the actual difference between New Zealand workers and migrant workers is that the latter “desperately want the work, work really hard and are fantastic workers”

Meanwhile – “I have heard these concerns, they have been directly discussed with me and I’m willing to take the issue up with the Minister of Immigration.
But I have to be realistic, I am also a champion to ensure that our own young people are made to get up, leave their dissolute ways and work for a living.” – Shane Jones

Why, Shane? “Our own young people” know your Government have dumped welfare sanctions.

Oddly – The goal is to plant a mix of a billion native and exotic trees by 2028 – to support a low emission economy, protect the environment and create ongoing employment.

    As I have previously said, I planted trees while at college and it was damned hard work but, it was great fun with a great bunch of guys, especially when they got rid of the useless lazy buggers and it made me as fit as a buck rabbit and I gained serious strength which has remained through the bulk of my life.
    
    As a young fellow and while doing second jobs I always chose those that were fairly physical and I firmly believe that muscle development assists me now as I turn into a grey haired walking stick carrying old bastard……

      Yeah doing Ag-work in summer holidays is a great way to teach you the benefits of an education with nice indoor work and no heavy lifting. Did hay-carting one summer, jogging 10-20km and lifting 1-2000 40kg wet bales from ground to over your head in one day and you feel it – as fit as I was I still got cramps in every major muscle group. Drinking up to 10 litres of ice water just to keep cool on a hot sunny day. All townies should spend a few months doing farm labour in their youth, would change their views on a huge amount of stuff.

Moderation is a thankless job as people will always complain about the time it takes to approve comments, and then be hobgoblins about consistency.

I would like to thank the moderators (whomever they are) for their efforts.

Now, having dutifully sucked up, I’d like to suggest you start to create a whitelist of commentators whom despite posting with a handle, have not needed moderation.

Will make your lives a lot easier.

  A very sensible suggestion, allytoo. I’m another who has never been “demerited” and, while also acknowledging the moderators for the thankless job that they do, I feel personally that blanket and delayed moderation may be causing KB to lose much of it’s former immediacy of debate. So your “whitelist” idea appeals as a sound compromise suggestion.
  
  I think that my most serious egregious offence (over my many years here) involved criticising PM Ardern’s ongoing wearing of hijabs for some two weeks after the 15 March mosque attack. I considered then (and still do) that she had reached a point of alluding to the tragedy as a silent aspect of establishing her own personal Prime Ministerial image. And for that, our genial host included me – by implication – amongst a number of commentators whom he labelled as “lacking empathy”. In my view, both our host and I were using our freedom of speech as we saw fit; but DPF is the KB site’s owner (and I respect that)!
  
  Full moderation of longstanding KB contributors – who have never been demerited or had comments expunged – seems to be on the ‘heavy’ side when the principal risk that they pose is their use of a nom-de-plume. (Many who do use a nom-de-plume will have their own personal and legitimate reasons for doing so.) After a year or two of unblemished ‘probation’, such commentators should not require ongoing moderation. Even if they do err in rare specific comments, the sources of such comments are known on the site-owner’s records. And such offending comments can still be deleted by the owner or a moderator if (a) he’s made aware and (b) agrees that they fail to meet the site’s required standards.

    I’m not sure if I’ve been “demerited” but I do concede that I have sailed pretty close to the wind with my comments when dealing with extreme stupidity that some commenters exhibit.
    
    I have also had a bit chucked back and I can deal with that as I expect that type of interaction is what makes a blog hum.
    
    I don’t mind the actual moderation but as we have all seen it results in multiple replies/comments exactly the same as the moderation makes them invisible while under moderation.
    
    I don’t have an answer but I really would like to know exactly what has prompted this. Are we to be investigated because I called ardern a liar or Calendar Girl rightly criticised ardern for being a virtue signaller and embarrassment to a large proportion of New Zealand.
    
    Was someone alluding to steffy girl having an unhealthy affection for billy goats going to increase the likelihood of this blog being subjected to litigation or some other absurd insult to another?
    
    I really would like to know what we are avoiding, especially when the one post/opinion piece that was actually refrerred to outside this blog was David G’s comments on the lack of assimilation of muslim immigrants and refugees, which the vast majority of New Zealand would heartily endorse.

Apparently, the use of cannabis as a mind-altering substance dates back at least 2500 years.

  Probably at high school for 99% of people. Computers programs created with help from a few highly skilled mathematicians have taken away need to learn calculus, number theory, transforms and other high level maths. I did honours maths, got close to enough credits for a math degree, and work in a highly technical STEM field, but only use calculus and matrix math a few times a year, though algebra (mostly in my head at this point) is every day. Most problems that used to require sophisticated analytic solutions can now be quickly and easily solved using simple numerical solutions on computer tools.
  
  I would say though that getting good at mental arithmetic is hugely valuable – has always been super useful to me to be able to answer what-if’s in a few seconds rather than 20-60 seconds taken to fumble with calculators etc. It’s a highly productive skill to have in meetings.

The Christchurch Press has lost its mind. Yesterday, it lamented that its readers’ beloved Crusaders had NOT been forced to change their name.

Today, it yet again gives a platform to a New Zealand migrant who is a critic of the West, Donna Miles-Mojab.

I joked yesterday that maybe Al Jazeera had bought Stuff. Today, I’m not sure they would be giving her a platform.

She is overly conciliatory to extremist Islam, such as the murdering ISIS. This is an extract from an article of Miles-Mojab published in the NZ Herald and on the web:

“In the media, we have heard much about the barbaric side of Isis: the terrorism, the beheadings and the ethnic cleansing, etc., but we have not heard about the other side of the Islamic State.”

And …

“If you thought Isis were made up of just uneducated jihadists, you are very much mistaken. Isis has many highly educated followers who understand the full potential of science, technology and social media.”

Miles-Mojab is sometimes described as an Anglo-Iranian-Kiwi. She was born in Britain to Iranian parents, and has moved to NZ as an adult. She is an example of how difficult it can be for second-generation Muslims to integrate in the West.

Miles-Mojab has advocated for a permanent increase in New Zealand’s refugee intake. She defends the hijab. And she appears to have open entry to the Christchurch Press.

  There’s about to be a surge of migration applications from Chinese wanting out of Hong Kong, and they won’t be farm workers.
  
  Our rate of population growth is outrunning our economic growth, and this is reflected in the flat GDP per capita statistics, and these are likely to begin falling this year. From late next year, they could dive.
  
  From the population surge, there is heavy and increasing pressure on infrastructure – on the health system, on prisons, on schools, on roads, and, of course, on housing.
  
  When you think about it, the population surge began under National, but has been kept up by Labour and the Judas Party.
  
  Perhaps what NZ needs is not a right wing party to complement National, but a right wing party to swamp National.

    Been going on for over thirty years now. The average skill level of new migrants remains lower than the average skill level of existing residents.

      I’m so pleased that I think I deserve a Jack Daniels, with a smidgen of coca cola.
      Earlier today I was chatting with mine host at a less than salubrious establishment. He says that he has had so many job applicants from the sub-continent that he could open a curry house. But they all have one thing in common; they want him to sponsor them as they seek a visa.

  We have near full-employment, and a whole lot of rural jobs that we can’t fill (eg mid canterbury 2% unemployment), we need people to do dirty, inconvenient work in often miserable conditions, preferably smart, hard working and reliable. You are not going to find them in urban dole queues, but you will find them in the Philipines and India. Shane can’t get his tree’s planted, fruit growers can’t get their crops picked and NZ is missing out on income.

  I actually have personal knowledge of the “slave labourers” and I clearly see you do not.
  
  I have seen farm mangers, ex Phillipines, earning salaries approaching $100K. If that’s slave labour… bring it on.
  
  I have also seen the drop off of Kiwis wanting to get into farm work. Please explain how you will get your daily cup of tea or yoghurt if the farmers can not get workers.
  
  I have personal knowledge of senior farm workers collecting $100K + salaries plus accomodation and meat with a vehicle thrown in for good measure.
  
  Is the work easy.. definitely not. Can the work get unpleasant at times… definitely but the salaries and lifestyle definitely compensate the person that is suited to that lifestyle.
  
  My current belief is that the average labourer on a farm wll be earning around the $50K mark with other “perks” thrown in. I also know that a farmer will move heaven and earth to keep a valued employee on the job. I also know that they wouldn’t cross the cowshed for a shitty employee and there are plenty of them about as well.
  
  Maybe one of the farm guys on here coulld help you out.
  
  Do I want more immigration, no but I can see no alternative unless some of our unemployed want to get of their arse and try something different.

    My wife had a couple weeks in Wellington hospital earlier this year. It was our first “exposure” to a public hospital ( fortunately up until this year our health has been good). I was surprised to see so many Filipino nursing staff and they were fantastic. Really well trained and after a while I realised it was the basic Filipino nature that made them so good at their job.
    My brother-in-law has worked in the hospital system his whole career and he says it would not function without them. Not just nursing but also lab staff etc.

      Neither would aged care. We had an elderly relative suffering dementia admitted to Te Hopai behind the Wellington Public Hospital. I reckon that over 75% of the staff were Filipinos.

        The other main difference is, 60% of the training is “on the wards” like it used to be in NZ. On nurse said to me the lectures just back up and support what they learn on the wards. Probably the opposite to NZ training. Most nursing is a practical job, in my view, so their training makes sense to me.

    The hard working 3rd worlders (mostly filipinos) coming in are adding a lot to rural NZ – great work ethic, strong communities, quickly integrating and aspirational when it comes to getting their kids educated and getting ahead in life.       But it’s a while before they have a vote … so in the meantime, the farm sector’s voting base slips.
      
      Regardless of ethnicity, NZ is in trouble because its population growth is outpacing economic growth, hence GDP per capita is about to begin falling.
      
      The country’s also in trouble with one of its two key export industries – dairy farming. Fonterra’s state reflects this.
      
      I read that the underlying NZ dairy-farming problems are now matching, if not lower, milk production costs of huge indoor herds in North America and elsewhere.
      
      If our dairying needs to get costs lower, it can get only limited help from keeping wages down by importing cheaper, more compliant labour.

In this so-called ‘open and transparent’ government…a Minister has pulled out of an interview today after we wouldn’t let them control the question line. They wouldn’t do the interview unless the story was positive. Unbelievable.

Agree, WINZ is totally dependent on how the Case Worker is feeling on the day. Having been on the receiving end of such an action, to the extent that a formal complaint was eventually laid, the attitude of some staff is reprehensible.

They are arrogant and very, very well aware of their power, and will use it for the merest reason.

Caring? Personal experience indicates otherwise.

  Even I find it hard to deal with them despite my Public Service background. They have decentralised processing too making communications difficult and a crude appeal system which they deal with themselves.

The level of unthinking partisan intersectional stupidity on display over Oranga Tamariki taking kids off awful parents is incredible. Trying to turn a shitty parenting issue into a race issue.
-Do they imagine it is being done for fun?
-~1 kid under 5 being murdered by monsters every 6 weeks, are they going to be making as much noise about official failures to act when the next kid is murdered?
Their racist activism is going to kill kids.

    There is unfortunately: social workers have more power than responsibility.
    
    Tariana Turia is respectfully wise. She understands the damage the state can cause through inappropriate intervention. That later populates our prisons from children who have been socialised to exist in a non-loving controlled environment. A loving close relative will be much more successful in raising a child than a paid stranger.
