Applicants with children not top of the list for some rentals.

“Landlords in Tauranga have reportedly been refusing to let to families with children. Property management professionals told the Bay of Plenty Times some landlords don’t want to have to deal with the wear-and-tear kids can cause.”

Of course refusing a tenancy on the grounds of children is not a lawful reason to reject an applicant. And anyway, according to the article, safety of children is for the parents to determine, not the landlord.

Property managers should be advising owners of the law, and if they make lawful suggestions to owners in line with owner wishes, well that is what happens especially if there is more demand than supply.

ECON101. Supply and demand get out of kilter for various reasons but the current government continues to have a significant part to play in driving properties out of the rental pool. Consequences.

  Young kids damage houses. They kick walls, spill stuff on carpets. I know. I had four. So why would a rational landlord choose to rent to people with kids in a tight market?
  
  In particular, the rental market in Wellington will become dire. The public service has been growing, and there is no new supply coming on.

    Agree. And the problem with ‘wear and tear’ is that it is not recoverable from the tenants, not officially via the Tenancy Tribunal anyway. Damage, yes, maybe, not that payment for that is always forthcoming anyway, often drip fed at a few dollars a week for years. If at all.

    Paginus, wait until the mega landlords take over, as Mr Twyford has indicated policy heading this way. They will take no prisoners, trust me.
    
    In the meantime, if you feel strongly about supporting other people’s families, feel free to buy up rentals and rent to them at whatever charitable rent you like.

“HITLER WAS NOT A SOCIALIST “

“The Nazi were Socialists” is becoming a popular meme by the US right and many of those on kiwi blog. A major reason could be the far and alt right feel uncomfortable with Nazism and its close associations with racial , ethnic policies , white ( Aryan) supremacy. They simple try to put logic and facts on their head and suggest that in fact National Socialism has a lot more in common with the US Democrats and other Liberal progressive forces . Of course it is totally wrong and divorced from the facts of history and the Nazi rise and seizure of power.

Hitler himself was never a “socialist “ by which the German workers would overthrow the capitalist system and seize power and control of the means of distribution and production in carbon copy Marxist- Leninist fashion. He could clearly see that to be identified as one would ruin his chances of gaining power. Especially the fact his voting strength came from mainly the middle classes. ,

“..He repeatedly pushed back efforts by economically left-leaning elements of the party to enact socialist reforms, saying in a 1926 conference in Bamberg (organized by Nazi Party leaders over the very question of the party’s ideological underpinnings) that any effort to take the homes and estates of German princes would move the party toward communism and that he would never do anything to assist “communist-inspired movements.” He prohibited the formation of Nazi trade unions, and by 1929 he outright rejected any efforts by Nazis who argued in favor of socialistic ideas or projects in their entirety…

Hitler viewed “socialism “ more as a political organizing mechanism for the German people more broadly: a way of creating a “people’s community” — the volksgemeinschaft — that would bring everyday Germans (and businesspeople) together not based on their class but on their race and ethnicity. Thus, he would use the unifying aspects of “National Socialism” to get everyday Germans on board with the Nazi program while simultaneously negotiating with powerful businesses and the Junkers, industrialists and nobility, who would ultimately help Hitler gain total power over the German state…”

Hitler strongly rejected left factions ( George Strasser . Ernst Rohm within his own party who argued more for Marxist styled “ socialist” ideology .

Instead stated,

“Your socialism is Marxism pure and simple. You see, the great mass of workers only wants bread and circuses. Ideas are not accessible to them and we cannot hope to win them over. We attach ourselves to the fringe, the race of lords, which did not grow through a miserabilist doctrine and knows by the virtue of its own character that it is called to rule, and rule without weakness over the masses of beings.”

He rejected Strasser’s demand the 41% of private property should be owned by the state. Such a policy would alienate voters and the NSDAP would be seen as no different than their Communist and socialist opposition . Furthermore when asked by Strasser what he would do with Krupp the big steel conglomerate . Hitler retorted he had no plans to destroy the German Economy. He envisaged a state whereby Workers , Industry and Business working side by side for the good of the German People ( peoples community – the volksgemeinschaft) united and lead by one leader .

George Strasser and Rohm paid the price for pushing revolutionary socialism within the party by being expelled and exiled in Stasser’s case or shot in Roehm’s case.

“Nazism wasn’t a socialist project. Nazism was a rejection of the basic tenets of socialism entirely, in favor of a state built on race and racial classifications”

A movement that also drew much of its inspiration from Italian Facism and its violent rejection of left politics and ideology uniting the people towards ultra nationalistic goals .

To Hitler and his supporters Marxism and Communism were an anathema. In fact a Jewish invention that had no place in his Reich where Industrialists, workers , middle classes , business worked together for the common good under the familiar refrain one people , one Reich one leader . Excluding naturally Jews , Roma and other Under menschen . Of course not forgetting Marxists ,Commies , Social Democrats , other socialists and liberals.

  And what side of politics today are trying to stifle free speech, deplatform people who’s views they dont agree with, figuratively but sometimes literally burn books that they dont want people to read, assault people and ask for violence like throwing milkshakes and recently battery acid towards those they deem their opponents? Not to mention the silencing of conservatives on social media sites, the takeover of our schools and institutions whilst preaching that they are the victims and repressed. And the side that churns out SJW and supposed antifascists that are completely opposite in their views to what they believe they portray. Not to mention the side that grows government, wants more people dependent on the state, curtails individual freedom, hates success and tries to control as much of peoples lives as possible?.   Adolf Hitler who was leader of the National Socialist Workers Party, was very much a nationalist socialist as opposed to international socialist. He disliked the idea that government employees owning shares in companies, wanted to control what the people thought and did, and ultimately destroyed his nations economy after plundering the resources and wealth of a small section of society. Sure meets every single socialist country criteria to me.

  Whether or not Hitler was a Socialist, he certainly wasn’t of the Right. As I’ve pointed out before, people tend to think of Socialism/Marxism as being of the hard Left and Fascism as being on the hard Right, when actually most of the -isms are collectivist ideologies and belong firmly on the Left.
  
  Recently I came across several references to “the far right Nazis,“and “the far right Fascists.“Although this is a subject I have covered before, it will continue to be a topic of great importance for as long as the Left continues to lie about it, and people swallow their lies.
  
  Fascism always has been, and always will be a left-wing ideology—period. That means that the Nazis, being a subset of Fascism, are left-wing as well. I cannot stress enough the importance of understanding this truth.
  
  The oft repeated lie that Fascism and the Nazis are right-wing has effectively served three important purposes:
  
  It has enabled the political left to deny any culpability for the atrocities committed by Hitler.
  It has unfairly and incorrectly shifted the blame for the Holocaust, Nazi eugenics, and other Nazi programs onto the right-wing, i.e. conservatives.
  It has served to muddy the waters to such an extent that true conservative values are tainted by “guilt through association” right from the starting gate.
  I am not claiming that Communism and Fascism are the same thing—they are not. They are, however, variations on the same theme—the theme of collectivism. That is, they both promote Big Government at the expense of individual freedom. As such, they both belong on the left side of the political spectrum.
  
  The media has long promulgated the myth of a political spectrum that looks something like this: Far-Left (Communists)—————-Moderates—————Far-Right (Fascists).
  
  What is wrong with that picture? What is wrong with it is that the true political spectrum looks like this: At the far left of the political spectrum we have collectivist ideologies such as Communism and Fascism, then moving to the right we find Socialism, then the Moderates. On the right side of the spectrum we move from the Moderates to Conservatives (who favor a Constitutional, or limited, form of government), and finally at the far right we find the true anarchists, who favor no government at all (not to be confused with faux-anarchists, who wish to tear down existing governments so that they can replace them with other forms of government).
  
  In short, the political spectrum moves from Big Government on the far left, to no government on the far right, with the size and influence of government decreasing as one moves to the right, and vice versa. Fascism belongs squarely on the left side of the spectrum.

    I’m left wondering which countries in the 1930’s weren’t engaging in some “form of socialism” to greater or lesser extents – the aftermath of the Great Depression created a climate for that, didn’t it (rightly or wrongly)? Roosevelt’s New Deal, Michael Savage in NZ. Most managed it without dropping into the ultranationalism and dictatorships of Mussiloni, Hitler, and Franco.
    
    Frankly I find the this whole debate a bit daft.

  Bullshit
  The SA was the original power (violent) base of the Nazi party. Crystal Nacht was their handy work. They were a significant PART of the party and wanted to challenge the Gestapo for their job, but Hitler couldn’t have a powerful, armed militia within the party that was not entirely loyal to him. So he got rid of them, first by getting rid of Rohm, who was assassinated.

No Government in NZ should let this happen as what it means is you have to be a Union member to get it three months early. My wife had this where she worked under a National Government and she argued that they were the ones kept the business open when union meetings and disputes happened and it wasn’t right that they should not get the perks that Union Members got, now they still wait three months but get back paid till that date. This is what the Unions demand because they don’t get the extra money weekly from those that won’t join.

In my view Teachers have a choice to join or not. Some decide not to, and are not part therefore of the collective bargaining process.

The Government, however, appears simply spiteful, rather than – say ‘kind’) with this rather arbitrary distribution.

They appear hell-bent on pulling some kind of way to shoot themselves in the foot, even when they should be either quietly completing the negotiation or publicising a ‘victory’ to the population.

I can’t fathom their divisive arrogance, I really can’t.

  One of the main reason teachers are part of the Union is for the legal services that the union provides.
  
  If a parent takes issue with a parent and plays the solicitor card, if the teacher is part of the Union, the union will take up arms on behalf of the teacher. If the teacher is not part of the Union and likely does not have the resources or private insurance for such instances, they are on their own.
  
  The $500.00+ per annum is group legal protection insurance with other shit attached.

    I in my naive past was a member of the PPTA. And then I went to a large meeting. You could not have asked for more disorganised chaos. At that point I realised they were more about protecting Labour than representing teachers needs. So I left and gave myself a $25 per fortnight salary increase. Yes, I will miss out on the $1500 bribe and the 3 months that I have to “suffer” waiting for the increase. But I know that none of my hard earned money goes to Labour via the PPTA. So stuff them, and the government the PPTA so clearly represents.

A Herald headline says “Gasps in court as accused gunman pleads not guilty” and reports “Many were visibly upset” and those people seem unprepared that Tarrant may not see himself as a murderer as charged, but as a soldier, partisan, or even crusader – such as Tarrant’s use of the word “invaders” [1] and allusions to Charles Mantel, Iosif Gurko and other historic names could imply. [2]
That may explain Tarrant’s “Not guilty” plea

On the night of October 1, 2017, Stephen Paddock opened fire – from his suite on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel – on a crowd of concertgoers at the Route 91 Harvest music festival on the Las Vegas Strip in Nevada. He killed 58 people and wounded 422, and the ensuing panic brought the injury total to 851.
Had he not committed suicide, Paddock would still have not personally known how many people he had killed or injured.

Is Tarrant also in a similar position – does he have personal knowledge of what he did, in that he apparently didn’t pause to examine anyone to know – and is that a technicality to further the duration of court action and appearances.
Tarrant has not yet spoken. His lawyers have so far answered on his behalf.
When he is eventually asked “Have your actions killed people”, he may in fact reply that he doesn’t actually, or accurately, know.

And although – Justice Mander said mental health assessments of the defendant had been completed with no issues arising regarding his fitness to plead or stand trial. A fitness hearing was not required. – in a drawn out trial (Tarrant’s lawyer claims up to three months) Tarrant may see that as continuing inhumane damage he may inflict on the wellbeing of all involved, and a “not guilty” plea is a step to enable that.

Tarrant does not need to say much to further his intent – to cause emotional harm, and incite conflict – if the procedure itself wades through copious detail much of which – because of the very way the action occurred – he will supposedly be unable to confirm or deny.

For the welfare of those involved and to reduce the damage Tarrant can still inflict, it would surely be helpful if the video record could be confirmed as evidence of Tarrant performing the actions which coroner’s would confirm as resulting in the deaths of those the video shows being shot, and other deaths by association, and hospital medical records affirm cause of the injuries. And the manifesto, authenticated as Tarrant’s work, showing the intent and planning, must fulfil the element of premeditation to define the killings as murder – “unlawful premeditated killing of one human being by another”.

The FBI investigation of the Las Vegas shooting is concluded (last January) with no conclusion – there was no manifesto, no suicide note, no evidence of motive, so no explanation why Stephen Paddock wrought the evil that he did.
Tarrant’s manifesto at least reputedly outlines his motives, his “conversion to extremism”, planning and what he expects ongoing.[3] Considering the renewed and extended pain to the Islamic community of Christchurch, and the country, it may be a shame the Tarrant manifesto is not “vetted or translated” by appropriate officials, to present what could be a helpful version of its contents, while discarding the incitements that is are not.
The New Zealand media were offered that opportunity but there appears to be no uptake.
(And, while I believe it could explain some matters, it should not have existed at all)

Tarrant seems to have in fact picked the wrong country after all for his utterly despicable act.
To have written about it and live-streamed it should for him be two more vast mistakes.
Should not each, the video and the manifesto, serve to convict him with very little further input from Tarrant?

  Any doubts about this seem to me to relate to the perceived impartiality of our media. Many people seem to feel our depleted, still shrinking media has moved to the Left, and more often the Green Left, in its general coverage of news.
  
  Propaganda by the deed, as the anarchists called it, goes back a long way, with bombs before the advent of assault rifles. In those times, there would have been no need for formal pacts of the newspapers in trial coverage. Hang the bastards would have been the universal slant.
  
  On the other hand, there were many tiny underground print publications giving the terrorists’ views, and even defending them, occasionally correctly as in the notorious case of Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, anarchists executed for allegedly murdering two people during a 1920 armed robbery.
  
  There were no formal pacts on trial coverage, as the one developed for the coverage of Tarrant next May.
  
  To many, the question will be not just be whether the trial should be allowed to become a pulpit for Tarrant, but whether you can trust the impartiality of our trial-colluding media – largely State-owned TV and radio, NZME’s NZ Herald, smaller titles and radio stations, and the apparently unsaleable regional chain, Stuff.
  
  The fact that our Leftist coalition government has introduced subsidies, as yet modest, for print media doesn’t help.

  What is is justice if it is to cause this nuisance? This event is unique and current law does not fit it easily. With the unusual live cast and Manifesto there is surely sufficient real evidence to promptly deal with the mattter. It would not be inappropriate to consider it as a special case and pass amending law to facilitate. Is the Crown seriously going to attempt to prove the separate 89 charges? Sometimes purism gets in the way of common sense.
  The mental health state is also arguable and that could have provided an expeditious solution–a forensic lockup for life without appeal or publicity rights.

    They also want a standard legal approach (between NZ an Aus) to people like
    Mark Taylor who the government of NZ allowed to leave and participate in atrocity after atrocity.
    
    Many do know France did attack NZ in a terrorist
    act so do not understand the logic of wasting time there.
    
    The reason these events keep re occurring is largely because ignorant idiots and cowards like your self do not have the courage to take a non political pragmatic approach to counter Terrorism.
    
    The Sooner people who like yourself who pretend to speak on behalf of and represent all Moslems and other minorities in a patronising
    and arrogant fashion SHUT UP the Better.
    
    If your Government would stop wasting time
    asking Australia to Change its flag and instead
    took as many of its criminals back Australia

  I have semi-regular sessions talking with Moslems
  (40+ minutes) some Australian one recently who attended CHCH to help bury a Friend, that was gut wrenching.
  
  Our discussions are open respectful and robust most are appalled at the low sentencing given to people arrested in preventative raids.
  
  When we discuss these 3 cases.
  
  As much as they appreciate the effort put into that
  Funeral (and they do) better prevention is the way forward not better funerals.
  
  Until Counter Terrorism is non religious non political i.e a genuine mature a concord between left and right and agreement to work together and in the case of NZ trans-tasman.
  
  No progress will be made nothing concrete useful
  or pragmatic will be implemented.
  
  So we all know another is coming.
  
  Australia is ready to face it.

“Coral bleaching event underway in French Polynesia despite no El Nino”

Widespread coral bleaching has been reported in the French Polynesian islands of Tahiti and Moorea, even though there was no El Nino event this year.

“ The reefs are among the most regularly bleached in the world, thanks to their position in the path of warm waters that spread west from South America during El Nino years.

This year, however, without the presence of an El Nino and the warmer water it brings, the reefs should have been spared.

But in the last few days, it’s been estimated that 50 to 60 per cent of corals on reefs around Tahiti and Moorea have been bleached, according to marine biologist Luiz Rocha from the Californian Academy of Sciences.

“I’ve seen the reports of the Great Barrier Reef bleaching, but this is the first time I’ve seen [bleaching] myself, and it hits you a lot harder,” Dr Rocha said.

“We have seen bleaching all the way down to 100 metres. But it’s worst on the shallow, sheltered reefs.”
Coral bleaching occurs when high water temperatures cause the coral to expel its symbiotic algae, revealing the white skeleton beneath…”

    Climate is always changing and the UN itself has stated they cannot give predictive climate forecasts because they are dealing with a chaotic system. (Third Assessment Report. TAR )
    
    Check out the “data” being used for their failed models. A large part is manufactured from other computer runs because they have no sensors in a very large part of the globe. Rising sea levels in the Pacific? Ask Auckland University.
    
    We have to live with change. If you want to increase your climate by 2 degrees just move a bit North or elevate your house. The cost of adaptation is less than trying to stop the planet. Where have the sunspots gone? The biggest heat provider is deprecated or ignored.
    
    Consider also, there is serious science suggesting strongly that we have or are entering a very long term temperature downturn– there has been no warming for 20 years. Managing cold, if ill prepared, is more difficult than throwing off a blanket or killing cattle because they compete with water as a source of a “green house gas”.
    
    There is hope on the fuel front too. There is a race on for patents for new forms of safely produced cheap nuclear energy. Not from the big bang stuff but from conditioned changes of internal states at the sub-atomic level. This is world wide and the phenomena being investigated have been replicated by many. Now the replication has been proven a gold mine is being sensed. AirBus has even gotten a patent for use in its future fleet. The battery electric car may be obsolete in 10 years. We may also have our domestic 20kw power plants.
