I see the pompous buffoons on the Wellington Regional Council have declared a “climate emergency”.

These are the same clowns who have utterly failed in providing a public transport system that is viable for most of the Wellington regions citizens to actually use.

Its hilarious when you think about it, proclaiming lofty and unacheivable goals while they’re screwing up in meeting their core responsibilties

WTF. Even worse the same out of control ratbags have just increased Wellingtons’ratepayer levy to make sure the 350 people employed by the Wellington Regional Council will get a wage increase,again WTF.Even one of the RWC Liars ,said yesterday the sea level around Wellington would rise by 3 metres. Makes one wonder how that type of mouthpiece can draw a massive income for making comments like that. WTF.

    Well, here’s a theory: Trump’s cross with Denmark. All the hot air emitted over the unrealised sale of Greenland will melt the Greenland ice and result in a rise in the sea level in Wellington Harbour. All the reclamations will be under water, and the city centre will be abandoned.
    Everyone will go to Auckland (Hooray!!!) which will sink under the burdens of increased population with no infrastructure to support it – but at last Auckland will be acknowledged as the rightful capital of New Zealand!.
    The remnants of the Wellington citizenry will remain in safety in the hills, will organise among themselves a sensible plan for their own futures, and live happily ever after –

    Ratepayers are now wearing the cost of these losers elected by non-ratepayers into positions salaried well beyond their abilities, but they can push their filthy socialist agendas with impunity ruining many businesses and driving ratepayers into financial embarrassment.
    Time for principal ratepayers only, voting in these elections, not the imbeciles that don’t have any responsibilities, apart from taking advantage of the amenities provided by the rorted ratepayers.

      Are “principal ratepayers” the only people who have knowledge and wisdom, igm? What about the many thousands of highly educated professionals who will never own their own homes? Should they be denied the local vote, too?
      
      Do you know that many highly paid professionals prefer to rent, because they have worked out that it is financially beneficial for them to do so? Should they be disenfranchised, too, igm?
      
      Last time you made this nonsensical suggestion, I suggested you get to work and advocate for a change to the law. Have you spoken to the National spokesperson on local government yet, igm? Mark Mitchell, the opposition spokesperson for Justice?
      
      No? Then you’ve got a lot of work ahead you.

I read this yesterday and chuckled…
A petition is being circulated calling on Jacinda Ardern to get the US Ambassador to tell Donald Trump that New Zealand also is not for sale.

  Here’s an exercise – imagine if Trump was Prime Minister of New Zealand? What would New Zealand be like right now?
  First of all we would have lower tax rates and far far less regulation. That means our economy would be booming.
  Oil and gas exploration would be going on at full steam. New coalmines would be opening so we wouldn’t have to import coal.
  Did I say that our economy would be booming?
  Unemployment would be very low. Maori unemployment would be at its lowest level ever recorded.
  
  There would be no bills before the house promoting social engineering and radical schemes. Political correctness would be on the retreat. Andrew Little would forever be labelled as “crazy Andy” and would hide under his seat whenever the Prime Minister spoke to the house.
  The New Zealand media would be known by its correct title “fake news”. They would be evermore desperate and plummet even lower lows to try and get rid of this Prime Minister.
  
  New Zealand manufacturing and New Zealand exports would flourish in the new pro-business environment.
  Immigration would be at sensible levels.
  
  We would actually be serious about our Armed Forces and fund them appropriately to actually defend our country.
  Business people would be making money, our young people would be working and the average worker would see their wages rise.
  
  So what if Prime Minister Trump was boorish and loudmouth on occasions? Surely a small price to pay?

  If the Governenet wants to reduce emissions, it will need relatively high petrol prices. If it takes action to force down prices by (hypothetically) 10 cents per litre, emissions would increase. That increase will impose a cost on New Zealand in meeting its Paris targets. So, logically, if petrol process do fall by 10 cents per litre, the Government should increase tax on petrol by 10 cents per litre to restore the status quo –otherwise the country will pay elsewhere.
  
  These are the kinds of mental gymnastics you run into when you have conflicting objectives. “Reduce emissions” and “Lower petrol prices”. But you won’t hear any journalists posing these questions.

    I think Ms Ardern and her advisors need a seeing eye dog. Difference in unleaded tax between Australia and NZ .71cents Australia .41= NZ .43 cents
    A difference of .28 cents per litre.
    As the tax goes up so does the cost of the margin.
    So here is the deal, Ms Ardern wants the market to cut their margins to absorb the tax increases.
    Margins look higher, but if you bought the tax back, margins would drop immediately.
    Very unfair to blame just the one side of the equation. Government has huge skin in these high prices.
    The government wants the cake but eat it as well.
    Margins play a part, but tax is the elephant in the room. If you keep taxing at high rates, there will be puss and pain at the pump.
    If you follow the Climage change fantasy, the pain will be unbearable very quickly. Voters choice.

  What seems to be lost in this “conversation” is the fact that the government owns a large stake in Z Energy via the NZ superannuation fund, in turn Z also owns a big chunk of Marsden refinary and other pieces of the petrochemical distribution industry.
  We are indeed being fleeced but the government is playing both sides of this. I wish someone would call them out on this hypocrisy.

    Burning fossil fuels causes the release of CO2 into the atmosphere, which is a cause of climate change.
    
    Making things out of fossil fuels doesn’t contribute to climate change. In fact it’s likely to be environmentally beneficial, where the products are lighter, more durable and less energy intensive to manufacture and transport than are products made of alternative materials.

        If properly disposed of, single use plastic bags have a lower life-cycle environmental footprint than any of the alternatives.

I wonder why Pania Newton believes it is so absolutely imperative that PM Jacinda Ardern visit Ihumātao.
Is it a hope that Jacinda will be overcome with some emotion that will evoke a “captain call” and take this issue in a direction that abstract or formal considerations of history and legal solutions will not

They’ll deliver a petition, signed by more than 22,000 people, urging Jacinda Ardern to travel to Ihumātao to experience the whenua – the land – herself.
The petition says without a personal visit they don’t think the prime minister has a true sense of why the land matters so much and what’s at stake if it’s lost.

Documentary “Mana Wahine” … looks at the work of Pania Newton who is leading the occupation at Ihumātao.
“This isn’t a Treaty issue, this is a heritage landscape issue,” Ms Newton tells Corin Dann. [1]

The spokesperson for the Ihumātao protest, Pania Newton, has said the issue there is not about the treaty, but about protecting a heritage landscape. [2]

If Jacinda Ardern suddenly finds some great impression on herself standing on the land at Ihumātao – should she visit there – in what way does that possible emotion change the legality of what she can do, apart from what she has done to date – as she pointed out at the Kiingitanga celebrations : facilitate others who seek a solution to the dispute?

  A pristine beach in New Zealand bought through a crowdfunding campaign has been handed to its new owners – the public.
  Nearly 40,000 people donated almost NZ$2.3m (£1.3m, $1.7m) to buy the Awaroa beach in the Abel Tasman National Park, on the South Island.
  Campaigners snubbed a businessman who offered them money in exchange for private access to part of the beach.
  The seven-hectare site will now be run by a national park.
  The previous owner, businessman Michael Spackman, agreed to sell the beach after the online crowdfunding campaign reached its target in a little more than three weeks.
  The purchase ensured the beach will remain out of private hands.
  
  And in regard to the possible purchase of Ihumatao …
  
  “The hīkoi should turn around and not march to the Prime Minister’s office, but march down to Tainui,” Dr Finlayson told The AM Show on Thursday, saying the solution to the standoff is “blindingly obvious”.
  “All the iwi that have settled around this area have Tainui links. Kiingi Tuheitia’s been there. I think it’s a fantastic opportunity for Tainui to step up – they’re very, very wealthy – and say, ‘Right – we’ll buy the land commercially. Nothing to do with the Crown at all.'”
  Tainui was the first iwi to cut a deal with the Crown in the mid-1990s, and has since turned its $170 million into holdings of more than $1 billion – Dr Finlayson (who, the item adds, has settled 59 claims)

  Tania is young and has a law degree but does she have diplomacy? I gather she would not have been stopped from speaking to Jacinda in a public address at Ngaruawahia Marae. I note those on the news interviewed at the gates of the Marae echoed the view that the parties themselves should reach a resolution. Sometimes there can be fighting for the sake of fighting and other times the wisdom to look for the best solution through compromise.

  I have noted how SOUL keeps on changing the reason for the protest.
  Sacred land: proved by Te Kawerau ā Maki as not because they grew crops on land. If SOUL accepts that it is sacred, then why build (even temporary structures as they have supposedly done), sleep, or eat on the land, which is contrary to cultural norms?
  Archaeological site: Various Courts have accept evidence that it is not.
  Burial site: Again, if that was case then would not have been used for growing crops.
  Treaty matter: Goes against accepted settling of claims by Maori and Governments for decades. Politically a nightmare for Labour and Iwi.
  
  Now it is about a “heritage landscape”, which is in the eye of the beholder, so is a subjective and emotional argument. I still say it is a Nimby protest.

  Is the Police Commissioner a castrati too that he dare not enforce the law according to his Office? Does he now act as the PM wills? His duty is to resist her under the law if she issues an illegal instruction or even a hint of one..
  In other jurisdictions the PM would be indictable for a breach of duty to uphold her high Office properly. She is not Queen of NZ.
  
  It is not breaching the peace to seize and evict people forcibly for occupying other peoples land.
  Not to do is encouraging anarchy.

“The president was scheduled to visit on 2 September, at the invitation of Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II.

Then last week Mr Trump suggested the US was interested in buying Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory.

Danish PM Mette Frederiksen described the suggestion as “absurd” and said she hoped Mr Trump was not being serious.

Announcing the cancellation of his visit, Mr Trump tweeted: “Denmark is a very special country with incredible people, but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time….”

From John Solomon at The Hill
‘My reporting, including interviews with four dozen U.S. officials over the last several months, actually identifies a much larger collection of documents – about a dozen all together – that, when declassified, would show more completely how a routine counterintelligence probe was hijacked to turn the most awesome spy powers in America against a presidential nominee in what was essentially a political dirty trick orchestrated by Democrats.

Here are the documents that have the greatest chance of rocking Washington, if declassified:

1.) Christopher Steele’s confidential human source reports at the FBI. These documents, known in bureau parlance as 1023 reports, show exactly what transpired each time Steele and his FBI handlers met in the summer and fall of 2016 to discuss his anti-Trump dossier. The big reveal, my sources say, could be the first evidence that the FBI shared sensitive information with Steele, such as the existence of the classified Crossfire Hurricane operation targeting the Trump campaign. It would be a huge discovery if the FBI fed Trump-Russia intel to Steele in the midst of an election, especially when his ultimate opposition-research client was Hillary Clinton and the Democratic National Committee (DNC). The FBI has released only one or two of these reports under Freedom of Information Act lawsuits and they were 100 percent redacted. The American public deserves better.

2.) The 53 House Intel interviews. House Intelligence interviewed many key players in the Russia probe and asked the DNI to declassify those interviews nearly a year ago, after sending the transcripts for review last November. There are several big reveals, I’m told, including the first evidence that a lawyer tied to the Democratic National Committee had Russia-related contacts at the CIA.

3.) The Stefan Halper documents. It has been widely reported that European-based American academic Stefan Halper and a young assistant, Azra Turk, worked as FBI sources. We know for sure that one or both had contact with targeted Trump aides like Carter Page and George Papadopoulos at the end of the election. My sources tell me there may be other documents showing Halper continued working his way to the top of Trump’s transition and administration, eventually reaching senior advisers like Peter Navarro inside the White House in summer 2017. These documents would show what intelligence agencies worked with Halper, who directed his activity, how much he was paid and how long his contacts with Trump officials were directed by the U.S. government’s Russia probe.

4.) The October 2016 FBI email chain. This is a key document identified by Rep. Nunes and his investigators. My sources say it will show exactly what concerns the FBI knew about and discussed with DOJ about using Steele’s dossier and other evidence to support a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrant targeting the Trump campaign in October 2016. If those concerns weren’t shared with FISA judges who approved the warrant, there could be major repercussions.

5.) Page/Papadopoulos exculpatory statements. Another of Nunes’s five buckets, these documents purport to show what the two Trump aides were recorded telling undercover assets or captured in intercepts insisting on their innocence. Papadopoulos told me he told an FBI undercover source in September 2016 that the Trump campaign was not trying to obtain hacked Clinton documents from Russia and considered doing so to be treason. If he made that statement with the FBI monitoring, and it was not disclosed to the FISA court, it could be another case of FBI or DOJ misconduct.

6.) The ‘Gang of Eight’ briefing materials. These were a series of classified briefings and briefing books the FBI and DOJ provided key leaders in Congress in the summer of 2018 that identify shortcomings in the Russia collusion narrative. Of all the documents congressional leaders were shown, this is most frequently cited to me in private as having changed the minds of lawmakers who weren’t initially convinced of FISA abuses or FBI irregularities.

7.) The Steele spreadsheet. I wrote recently that the FBI kept a spreadsheet on the accuracy and reliability of every claim in the Steele dossier. According to my sources, it showed as much as 90 percent of the claims could not be corroborated, were debunked or turned out to be open-source internet rumors. Given Steele’s own effort to leak intel in his dossier to the media before Election Day, the public deserves to see the FBI’s final analysis of his credibility. A document I reviewed recently showed the FBI described Steele’s information as only “minimally corroborated” and the bureau’s confidence in him as “medium.”

8.) The Steele interview. It has been reported, and confirmed, that the DOJ’s inspector general interviewed the former British intelligence operative for as long as 16 hours about his contacts with the FBI while working with Clinton’s opposition research firm, Fusion GPS. It is clear from documents already forced into the public view by lawsuits that Steele admitted in the fall of 2016 that he was desperate to defeat Trump, had a political deadline to make his dirt public, was working for the DNC/Clinton campaign and was leaking to the news media. If he told that to the FBI and it wasn’t disclosed to the FISA court, there could be serious repercussions.

9.) The redacted sections of the third FISA renewal application. This was the last of four FISA warrants targeting the Trump campaign; it was renewed in June 2017 after special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe had started and signed by then-Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. It is the one FISA application that House Republicans have repeatedly asked to be released, and I’m told the big reveal in the currently redacted sections of the application is that it contained both misleading information and evidence of intrusive tactics used by the U.S. government to infiltrate Trump’s orbit.

10.) Records of allies’ assistance. Multiple sources have said a handful of U.S. allies overseas – possibly Great Britain, Australia and Italy – were asked to assist FBI efforts to check on Trump connections to Russia. Members of Congress have searched recently for some key contact documents with British intelligence. My sources say these documents might help explain Attorney General William Barr’s recent comments that “the use of foreign intelligence capabilities and counterintelligence capabilities against an American political campaign, to me, is unprecedented and it’s a serious red line that’s been crossed.”

Stuff is raking up the controversy about the name “Crusaders” for the Christchurch based rugby team.

This is could be a PR prelude to the NZRFU debating axing the name, or perhaps it’s just kamikaze marketing by a desperate media chain.

Stuff has talked with one of the franchise’s sponsors, the University of Canterbury. The report brings in a marketing lecturer at the university, Ekant Veer (born in England Ekant Veer Singh, and a graduate of the University of Bath). It notes Veer has said the “Crusaders” name is a terrible association, and should change.

Stuff reports: “The academic has also told the university’s marketing team that the name doesn’t sit well with its values.”

Is the push against the brand name “Crusaders” being driven from Canterbury University?

Well, more by Stuff, whose readers are diving off the publication and leaving it to – well are even rats left wing?

It’s making it hard for some traditional, die-hard Crusaders fans to renew subscriptions.

Here’s Stuff, in the report, stirring up the academics:

Newsroom asked if the university was proud to still be associated with the Crusaders. It ignored the question and rehashed a statement it put out on June 13.

The university appears these days to contain a widening swamp of the social soft sciences and Maori long-unwritten “knowledge”. Too bad for the surviving intellectual islands such as engineering, law, forestry.

Why are Western universities suffering from intellectual dry rot?

… The ‘rot’ really set in with the ill – conceived (by then Local Government Minister Michael Bassett) 1989 forced amalgamations within the local government sector … where in the main larger units of local government lost control of their costs and the capacity to meet their infrastructure responsibilities.

Put another way … the bloated bureaucracies of the larger local authorities controlled patsy elected representatives (effectively becoming bureaucrats poodles) and ran things to suit themselves … as they went to war with their communities.

There are two types of local government in this world … the small and the bad.

Take the ‘local’ out of local government … and you bureaucratically bugger it.

Generally … better balance between elected representatives and bureaucrats has been maintained within the smaller units of local government … and long overdue lessons need to be learned from the top performing Waimakariri and Selwyn Councils.

Just because too many units of local government have screwed things up … it most certainly does not give them the unaccountable right to effectively BAN the provision of new affordable housing.

  There’s been a long chain of NZ exports: Maori heads, flax, native timber, wool, meat, butter and cheese, kiwifruit and apples, honey, wine ..
  
  We’ve had some great agricultural pioneers and entrepreneurs, but how are we going to develop beyond these industries based on natural resources and tourism, also based on natural resources?

        Only a small proportion of people are suited to lead this work, Tall Man, so it’s important we identify them.
        
        The focus on technology learning being led by teachers and class learning is wrong, in my view.
        
        Getting kids’ enthusiastic and working at home with the Raspberry Pi, which is cheap, would be a better route. Perhaps we could copy something like the BBC-finance Micro Bit, distributed free to a million British children.
        
        Similar things could be done with 3D printing, which will be big in many fields, and is particularly relevant to a remote, low-population, small-market country like New Zealand.
        
        Enthusiasm generated outside school, or continued outside school, is the way to go.
        
        Over all, we shouldn’t rely on kids learning coding as the complete answer for future jobs. There will always be big demand for coders, but coding tools will lift productivity, and Third World labour will undercut our workers.

  There was a good example recently in an article about the proposed decriminalisation of abortion, which referred to the “pregnant person” throughout. Can’t refer to “pregnant woman” because that would suggest men can’t get pregnant and would therefore be transphobic (pauses to bang head on desk for a bit). Sometimes it’s hard to escape the feeling that an asteroid wiping out human life could only be a net gain for the Universe.

Jimmy Shaw’s alleged attacker appears in Court. I’m not sure how much of Jimmy’s testimony I believe, but it somehow seems a bit ‘contrived’ to me.

And without wanting to downplay or excuse assault, I would be interested to know what Jimmy’s description of ‘a fairly solid punch’ actually means.

  After being looked at by ambulance staff, Shaw went to work at Parliament but then started bleeding out of his nose.
  
  He checked into the emergency department and had injuries to his eye area, a fractured eye socket and grazes to his hand.

Watching Q&A in Parliament today for first time in months.
Mallard is the worst speaker in living memory. It may be all fun and giggles for the Government as he throws Opposition members out and demands apologies etc, but they should remember what goes around comes around, and a future Speaker may just live down to the example he is setting.

Socialists in NZ are very sensitive to Arderns image being attacked.
I suspect they are not that confident in her governments policies and seek to get re-elected on her Charisma.
Normal People in NZ have the opposite problem, we have a very UN-charismatic leader of the opposition but good policies. Hence why i suspect we can take a bit more banter because we don’t rely entirely on Charisma.

So which side is it more fun to be on? The side that can’t take a joke and has to maintain an image?
Or the side where you can tell racy jokes and have a good laugh at and with each other.
I think the fun side will build up more energy and momentum as time goes on and it explains why Socialists in this country are turning on free speech. It scares them.

A group of about a dozen teenagers, including three Green Party Youth MPs, were kicked out of Parliament and banned from the premises for a year after protesting in the public gallery.

Yes, it would have to be Green Party Youth MPs, wouldn’t it? Apparently 14 teenagers – aged 17 and 18.

[Chloe] Swarbrick told The Herald the protests in the House was the “boiling over of frustration on issues of indigenous sovereignty, climate action, inequality and the raft of other issues younger generations carry the disproportionate burden of”.

Chloe should be encouraging these teenagers to get a job and pay taxes!

Speaking alongside Ms Merkel, the Conservative Party leader used a German phrase in his address that has brought Ms Merkel great pain in the recent past. “Wir schaffen das” (we can manage this) was her response in 2015 when she was quizzed on whether Germany could absorb huge numbers of immigrants at the height of the migrant crisis. It soon came into wider use for criticising Merkel’s immigration policy. In 2016 she said she would not use the phrase again.

“We seek a deal and I believe that we can get one. We can do it, wir schaffen das, I think is the phrase,” Mr Johnson said, which was met by laughter from the audience.

Pauline Hanson banned from Twitter

Pauline Hanson has been temporarily banned from Twitter after suggesting that protestors in Brisbane should be dispersed using electric cattle prods.

The Senator published a video showing her wearing an Akubra and walking through what looks to be a cattle station with the prod in her hand. She suggested that it be used to move on demonstrators who have taken to the streets in Queensland protesting environmental issues such as climate change and the Adani mine. “When the farmers have trouble getting the cattle up off the floor of the trucks, or in the cattle yards, they just touch them with this and they’ll soon move; it doesn’t matter how big the beast are, they will move with this,” she said in the video.

An un-PC comment, perhaps, but I’m not sure that it warrants a Twitter ban. If that’s the standard, then Twitter will be banning lots of people.

Winter has come for China’s otherwise frenzied housing market, as the country’s top property developers slash prices to boost sluggish sales.

China Evergrande, the country’s third-largest developer by sales, said it was launching a two-month campaign offering discounts of up to 22 per cent on 532 projects across China, starting from Tuesday.

Local media reported that the company, chaired by billionaire Xu Jiayin, who is known as Hui Ka-yan in Hong Kong, has asked employees, even those not in sales, to promote its offers on social media.

Other developers are providing discounts on individual projects in different cities. Country Garden, China’s largest developer by sales, cut the prices of homes in its The Clouds project in Guangzhou by about 10 per cent. For example, flats measuring 90 square metres are now selling for 2.7 million yuan (US$382,194), or 30,000 yuan per square metre. Earlier, similar sized flats were selling for 33,000 yuan per square metre after discounts.

Even though some leading companies, such as China Vanke, the country’s second-largest developer by sales, insist they will try and avoid steep cuts in prices, more are expected to announce discounts to drum up sales. … read more via hyperlink above …
