  Here’s my suggestion to the problem of falling vaccination rates – ban unvaccinated kids from mainstream schools. Set aside a subset of schools that will accept any student, vaccinated or not. But for the rest the parents must present a vaccination certificate (or a doctor’s certificate explaining why they cannot be vaccinated) before the child can enroll.
  
  As far as I can see this ticks all the boxes;
  
  * Anti-vaxers get to choose whether to vaccinate or not
  * All children still have access to education
  * Children who can’t get vaccinated get the safety of herd immunity (at least in the school environment)
  
  Obvious this approach is disadvantageous to non-vaccinating parents, in reducing their choice of school. Another concern would be that because vaccination-optional schools would have lower (possibly much lower) vaccination rates, outbreaks would be more frequent and more severe. But frankly, tough. Choices have consequences. If parents choose not to vaccinate their kids then it’s only fair they bear the consequences of that choice rather than increase the risk to others.
  
  To my mind this is a reasonable compromise between compulsory vaccination, and people’s right to be kept safe from preventable diseases.

      Because of Herd Immunity. Because there are some who cannot be immunised because of Auto immune conditions or because of medical treatments. Babies cannot be vaccinated. Those who can be protected should be for the sake of those who can’t. It’s a display of personal responsibility for public benefit.

      Well that’s a remarkably uneducated comment.
      
      1) Vaccines work very well for most, but not everyone.
      2) Some kids, for instance Leukaemia patients, cannot have the vaccine.
      3) Young kids before their booster may not yet have full immunity.
      
      If you think Karen on Facebook knows better than your doctor, then your kids are probably also too dumb to get any value out of school, so what’s the problem with them being banned?

      Some people cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons (infants, pregnant women, or immunocompromised individuals, etc), there is also a very small (about 3% from CDC) failure rate in vaccinations (who do not know they are in 3% until infected). By immunizing all who can it reduces chances of an outbreak.
      
      Infected droplets of mucus can remain active and can be passed on by touching (they are contagious) for around two hours.

    Would make a good natural experiment too – compare the health of each group years later. The problem with current vaccine research is that there are no control populations. Some anti-vaxxers already home school, so ‘punishing’ them by blocking them from attending the local school where they could be indoctrinated by leftie teachers is not much of a threat.
    
    There’s more to this measles thing than meets the eye – officially we were well within herd immunity standards, so why are we suddenly seeing a break out of the disease now. It’s unlikely to be anti-vaxxers because they are tiny minority. Most parents do what the doctor tells them. Something’s up.

      Immunisation rates for 5 years is 88% nationally, NZ target is 90%, other countries say needs to be 95%.
      Note targets are for a community area, not an average across city or nation. So some areas of Auckland have low rates (well less than 88%) and this is where outbreaks happening. Only NZ Europeans have above 90% rate in Auckland, as opposed to 83% for Maori. Pacific and Asians between them.
      
      I saw that France and Poland have compulsory scheme.

      Who is even slightly surprised that there is a major outbreak of horrible third world diseases.

    The problem is that kids go other places. Soccer practice, airplanes, buses…
    
    The only way to fix things is to make vaccinations effectively compulsory. The exemptions would be on medical grounds only. Doing this would make measles outbreaks like the current one impossible.
    
    We don’t allow parents to opt out of car child seats. It’s no different. Potentially worse because stupid parents can kill not just their kids but others as well.

    Like me, he never had them when he was a kid.
    No idea if we were vaccinated so I’m wondering what we should do?
    
    Are we likely to contract the bug or will it not affect us.

Cannot recall if it was Genter or Clark blaming the previous govt for not dealing with anti vaxxers.   As with many countries around the world, NZ is experiencing the worst measles outbreak in over 20 years. Welcome back to the dark ages. This was predictable, entirely preventable, and the government were warned.

  The target for MMR vaccine is 95% of all infants fully immunised by age two. We need this proportion of our community to be immune to stop measles being transmitted from one person to another. We almost got there in 2014, however today 2-year old coverage has dropped to around 91%. Among Maori it had dropped to around 86% This means there are too many toddlers and young children susceptible and of particular concern the unimmunised people are not evenly dispersed among the rest of the population creating hot-spots for diseases like measles.

    Humans develop immunity to diseases but the organisms that cause those diseases mutate and evolve to overcome that immunity.
    
    There is a reason why the vaccine is not “100% effective” and its efficacy will decline over time. You don’t think this is true?
    
    It wouldn’t surprise me at all if there are vaccinated people infected with the disease quite possibly asymptomatically
    
    In the meantime marketing vaccines is big business…

        Me too – what I am questioning is whether the best way of dealing with these things is mass immunization or whether a more targeted approach might have longer term efficacy.
        
        I know that pondering such subtleties in a blog forum where absolute certainty rules is a guaranteed downtick magnet, human advance relies upon challenges to the received wisdom
        
        And the idea of compulsory vaccination fills me with horror – though when we came here many years ago we had to have been vaccinated for smallpox – it was a condition of entry, I’m told

      Andrei, the mutation rate of the various virii varies significantly, and I’m not sure about measles. When designing a vaccine the makers do try to use essential parts of the virus that have low mutation rates.
      
      But of course all things do mutate over time and no doubt measles does too. However I doubt we are still using the same vaccine as 20-30 years ago.
      
      The issue with NZ does appear to be the pockets where vaccination coverage is below that necessary to have an effective “herd immunity”. I’m not convinced that most of the people in those areas are actually genuine “anti-vaxers”, it is at least as likely that they are avoiding contact with health authorities for cultural reasons.
      
      And yes, vaccines do have risks. I’ve pointed out before that 10’s possibly as many as 90-100 NZ children will have bad reactions to being vaccinated, and several may in fact die as a result. However if measles was allowed to be widespread, literally thousands of children would develop serious complications, and the death toll could be 10’s to a hundred or so a year. Vaccines have a much lower risk, but not a zero one. It does help that doctors do know when someone is vaccinated and thus are usually alert to complications that arise and such complications can be detected and treated efficiently.

  Yes. A quick search on the internet tells us that the incidence of measles has been increasing dramatically over the past couple of years all over the world.
  I’m surprised that the MoH didn’t alert the Minister, and that he didn’t launch a vaccination campaign to catch all the lazy/didn’t get around to it parents. Interesting too, to note that if you are vaccinated tomorrow, it takes approximately 14 days for the body to develop its immunity. So the door is ajar for the horse to bolt through –
  Those of us who survived a dose of the measles as kids before vaccination was available, remember all too well how sick we were. At age 6, I spent 10 days in my darkened bedroom with a blue cloth over the light shade because of the danger to my eyesight. But I think mumps was worse.

  I doubt it. His 20-year non-parole period would not be up until next year, and he’d be highly unlikely to get parole on first application.
  
  In the meantime, I doubt if the Supreme Court will find in his favour, given the grounds for appeal were extremely limited. He’s currently where he belongs.

  Failure to stand-down an alleged rapist in the PM Office (FFS Jacinda is working with a rapist)!
  
  Failures in Question Time, so much so the Speaker is constantly intervening to “protect” Jacinda.
  
  Failure to protect ocean sanctuaries (due to NZF “protecting” their donors).
  
  Failure to advance hydro dam schemes to produce more electricity (needed for EV cars the COL bleats on about).
  
  Failure to protect and secure NZ’s energy supplies (O&G exploration ban, which will result in increased energy costs for NZ’ers and ironically will increase world emissions).
  
  Failure to attend Question Time regularly.
  
  Failure to meet with the people that Jacinda is shafting with her Captain’s Calls (instead making announcements on other people’s/industries futures at kindergartens or tertiary institutes where pupils won’t question her).
  
  Failure to meet (or even talk neutrally, let alone positively) the US President which even Helen Clark made efforts to do (instead Winston is dispatched to patch over the cracks).
  
  Failure to ask for official advice before making stupid Captain’s Calls.
  
  Failure to hold NZF’s Jenny Marcroft to account for trying to silence Mark Mitchell (this was a major issue because Winston did something he tries to avoid – apologising)!
  
  Failure to hold Claire Curren to account for ages.
  
  Failure to hold Phil Twyford to account over KiwiBuild failing.
  
  Failure to hold the Greens to account for making stupid decisions to divert road user charges to other areas that has nothing to do with road transport (result more congestion = more emissions).

      I’m still expecting name suppression for the ‘Labour Youth Camp’ accused on Monday. If suppression is granted / imposed, I shall be very interested in the Judge’s justification.
      
      I just know that, were it my son up on those charges, there would be no suppression of his name. So if name suppression is granted in the Auckland District Court on Monday, will that mean that there are special protections for Labour Party members, or for relatives of influential Labour Party officials or representatives?
      
      And, once again, will the Labour Party (or ‘those who were in charge’ at the relevant Labour Youth Camp near Waihi last year) face charges for supplying liquor products freely to young people who were under the ‘legal drinking age’.

        calendar girl, I have no problem with an accused getting name suppression, especially on sexual allegations. However, I would have a problem with a plea bargain for a much reduced charge with no jail time and then permanent name suppression.
        
        I wonder if there will be a trial. If not I hope the opposition does its job and ignored cries of muckraking. The complainants could have been bought off.

Unfortunately for someone like myself who is anti immigration and anti foreign ownership, I can’t vote National or Act so guess its the New Conservatives. There are many people in a similar situation, very unhappy with where we are heading with this Govt particularly following on from the 15th March. Many of us are Patriots and despair seeing our country being recolonised and sold off to the highest bidder. We are destroying our little paradise.

(Sold to NZ Company in 1839) After all, the Iwi (various) have sold out and there is no Maori ownership interest remaining. Sounds just like a certain block of private land in Mangere?   Wellington suffers from having grown up on hills surrounding small arterial valleys. Also from having the CBD built on the old shoreline and reclamation. Too late now to change.
  
  The city transport routes were maxed out in the 1950’s. I have spent over half my life in the inner city or its suburbs. Inadequate consideration has been given to the physical road area required for transport to service the higher population density. Each transport unit takes a defined area and there is a limit to how many of those units can occupy the available land. Speeding up their flow may allow a greater number of units/hr but any hitch increases the risks of halting a much greater volume of traffic.
  Tunnels may be possible through to the South Coast area but no sane economist would put their own money into it.
  The rewards for the enormous expenditure required for little gain in Wellington are not there.
  
  Where are the engineers? I have just stated the obvious from my basic engineering training.
  
  Some emptying out of Wellington seems required not filling up access ways with little used cycle follies causing further congestion.

“CAIR is proud to partner with the U.S. Census Bureau to ensure American Muslims are fairly and accurately counted in the 2020 Census,” Executive Director Nihad Awad said in a CAIR news release. “Full participation in the census ensures that American Muslims will be better represented in Congress and that their communities receive an equal share in state and federal programs.”

It isn’t clear what CAIR or the Census Bureau will do as part of the partnership. The statement indicated CAIR will promote participation in the Census and advise people how to avoid scams. The Census Bureau did not respond to a request for comment.”

The protected Labour party youth camp groper is going to be in court to get permanent name suppression and acquitted on all charges because their Labour Party membership is up to date.

Be there, don’t miss the Labour Party perverts being given a free pass to continue sexually assaulting others while the PM pretends it’s not happening.

Please, nobody mention the unsupervised underage drinking – that’s another thing Labour Party people can’t be held accountable for.

Some health charities want more taxpayer funding. Not saying they are doing a bad job but do have to wonder about this from the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation –

O’Dwyer said currently the foundation spent a lot of time translating asthma management resources into te reo Māori as Māori are disproportionately affected by the condition but it could do more if the ministry gave it more assistance.

How many people can read Maori but not English? Who is making this resource decision and based on what?

The NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption is investigating whether NSW Labor received money – $100,000 – from illegal sources:

A senior Labor staffer has told an inquiry he knew it was “unusual” an Aldi shopping bag full of cash was allegedly delivered to party headquarters by a Chinese billionaire in 2015.

In Tuesday’s sitting, Labor’s community relations director Kenrick Cheah was quizzed about a plastic shopping bag of money Chinese billionaire Huang Xiangmo allegedly dropped to the party’s Sussex Street headquarters. The inquiry previously heard allegations that Mr Huang gave the money to former party boss Jamie Clements who then gave it to Mr Cheah to count. Mr Cheah said he did not have time to think about why there was so much cash in the bag when he was counting it because he was very busy, but he agreed it was “unusual”.

So far, as a result of the ongoing inquiry, one potential witness has committed suicide and, this week, the NSW Labor Secretary has been sacked. No doubt there will be adverse consequences for other people. Overall, not a good look for NSW Labor.
