  Interesting observation wreck. Back in 2008 petrol was about $2-19/ltr for 91 octane. It dropped over the following year or so.
  
  And here we are 11 years later, and petrol is about the same price as it was back then, even with the raft of new fuel taxes over the last year or so.
  
  Diesel, however, has risen in price by about 75% over the same period of time, and diesel vehicles also pay the RUC on top of that.
  
  So if we draw a line through their predictions, then our climate doomsday is still centuries away !

  It is frightening that we have such absolute cretins making law for us to follow….
  This bozo has just been lecturing us about moving to EVs and that it would save us from relying on fossil fuels,seriously I believe this is a “shiny thing over there”, they are trying to divert us away from thinking about the rape culture in labour and how out of depth our glorious leader is .

Why no Police?

The Spinoff interviewed “Sarah” and – detailed how she was pinned down and sexually assaulted at the man’s home during a private meeting to discuss party business in early 2018. [ A Labour staffer is accused of digitally raping a 19-year-old party volunteer – as described by the Daily Mail, UK, for their international online readers]

So, why did she not go to the Police?

Sarah didn’t want to go to the police. She knew people who had been through the process and had told her how difficult it was, she said. “I thought about the amount of people who come forward and then the number who actually get convictions, and it just felt like it was going to be really hard.” In the aftermath, she felt herself becoming more withdrawn and isolated, a shadow of the young, confident leader she used to be.

Instead of approaching the Police, it seems there was an avenue of complaint through the aftermath of the Labour summer camp debacle

Sarah told The Spinoff that the central incident took place during a work meeting at a private residence in early 2018. [Valetine’s Day – from other sources] A month later allegations of sexual assault at a Labour summer camp surfaced. Labour announced it would conduct a review into the youth camp complaints, to be led by lawyer Maria Berryman.

Nigel Haworth told media. “I want this to be a safe party where everyone can go to any event and be sure they won’t be harassed or subjected to any of this treatment. It is utterly unacceptable.”

Encouraged by the invitation, Sarah began to weigh up whether to go through the process of sharing her own story with the inquiry. While the prospect filled her with dread, she decided to make contact. [1]

And what of justice?
Once Ardern has been to Japan to watch the All Blacks and been to New York to again attend the United Nations, and returns to the Dew Review due in three weeks, where can whatever the result is, lead to any justice in a rape case?

Sarah has chosen to not go to the Police to request a normal investigation.
So what action can be expected from anything of the two inquiries that Ardern has belatedly put in place now.
If found to have the full substance, which Sarah’s claims would seem to have, how can the perpetrator be convicted or sentenced.

If the alleged perpetrator has been paid out on his resignation is that sum of money a proceed or gain from criminal activity? Would any payment as such have arisen if a complaint had lead to his dismissal?
How does the Ardern system of inquiry actually administer any justice?

    Why did he assault another person when challenged on this. If I was falsely accused of Rape I would be trying very hard to come across as reasonable and would not be assaulting a person questioning me over this. And there are 10 other complainants, and he resigned. There is no way in hell I would resign if innocent. I would be fighting to clear my name.

      That’s because you wouldn’t have the golden net under you.
      
      What would have [pure speculation] happened is that he was told to resign quietly, that he would get paid his entitlements, that his name would therefore not have the possibility of being published, and he could be ushered into another senior, well paid position somewhere else.
      
      Whether it’s a secondment to a sister party overseas for a year (like Darren Hughes), or in a separate office working specifically on the election, or something similar.
      
      That’s my pick anyway.

  This is a denial of justice. That can be itself a crime.
  Organising to prevent an investigation by the Police is borderline. Even more so, if the victim does not feel she can tolerate the ordeal further resulting in a cover-up. Creating that situation is inherently criminal. That stands alone as an offence, it does not require that allegations by the victim be dealt with first by the Police or at all. The Police should commence their own investigations into these obstruction of justice matters.
  
  Any hint of bullying by the “investigation team” of the victim puts this into being a Police matter as they have a duty to uphold the law despite the PM’s frivolity with her Office. The allegations of the victim an be put aside and the issue of her treatment by others considered.
  
  Peters should know better–“innuendo” cannot be grounds for denial of justice. With Peters everything is murky except what to him is clear, though unproven.

On Newstalk ZB, Arden said she is telling the truth when she says she didn’t know the allegations were of a sexual nature. And that’s plainly true.

Arden doesn’t know anything. She is thick. So when she says she didn’t know, that is obviously true.

  Jacinda Ardern attends a meeting of the New Zealand Council, the governing body of the Labour Party, where she “expressed complete dissatisfaction with the way [the inquiry] had been handled by the Labour Party”. She “very seriously shared my view that they were not the appropriate place to undertake inquiries around concerning behaviour by members of the Labour Party, but particularly they are not the appropriate place to ever undertake an investigation into a sexual assault.” [1]
  
  Did she not know, when she “very seriously shared my view” that “particularly they are not the appropriate place to ever undertake an investigation into a sexual assault.”?
  That was at least a month before she claims to have officially known – when she read it in Spinoff, Monday September 9, last week

Jacinda Ardern hasn’t done her image any good at all with her interview on Newstalk ZB this morning. When questioned about Grant Robertson’s role, she obfuscated totally. When asked if she would resign if there were adverse findings about her, she said she “knew” that would not be the case.

Should we infer from that statement that she “knows” that, because the Terms of Reference for various investigations have been written in such as way as to exclude her role from any scrutiny?

If that’s the case, it’s little wonder that the “most open and transparent government ever” is keeping the Terms of Reference secret, and the reason for the secrecy has nothing to do with the complainants, and everything to do with protecting the PM’s reputation ahead of her trip to the UN.

  Have to agree, Jacinda doubled down and has thrown her political future at it, Grant Robertson is in this up to his neck as Mike said.
  Four weeks is now six weeks, outside person not appointed, this will bubble on for months.
  Big difference this time is public maybe fooled once, but they won’t be this time.
  Months of negative image on a lead up to election won’t work In the polls.
  Jacinda and Winston will be purged at next election, if they are not, the NZ voter needs a seeing eye dog for all to see what a total shitfight has been endured.

Interesting to read that the Far North iwi have banned Captain Cook’s replica ship Endeavour from docking in Mangonui as part of the commemoration marking 250 years since Cookie’s arrival in Aotearoa.

Funnily enough my partner and his mates were treated much the same way last year when he took his boat up to the BOI for the annual swordfisting competition. They decided to head up for a look at Mangonui beach and stock up on a few perishables from the local dairy. But when they encountered a local Maori family on the beach and asked them for directions, they were told to “f~~k off” in no uncertain terms. Descretion being the better part of valor, they immediately rowed back to the launch, raised anchor, and motored straight back to Russel.
Not much changed up there obviously 🙁

Quite rightly we can speculate about the health of the cult leader – if indeed he has taken that long to recover then his health is in a very poor state indeed – and after 50 years of heavy smoking and drinking his body would have taken a hammering. I’m speculating that something is absolutely not right- way more serious that an old “rugby injury” (another lie by the #parttimePM) – and his unhealthy and hard living past is catching up – has anyone heard the rumour that he was in the respiratory ward ?

So yesterday a member of Labour’s original 3 member investigating committee, Simon Mitchell, released a statement through his lawyer stating he did not receive emails from the complainants alleging sexual assault.

Interesting to hear the same Simon Mitchell used to work in Helen Clark’s office (according to the NZH) and was the guy that bought the painting that Helen Clark signed but didn’t actually paint it back in 2002. Here’s a snippet from the news article at the time:

Last April, the Sunday Star-Times revealed that Helen Clark had not painted the picture. Soon after the story appeared, Helen Clark sent Mr van Dijk a cheque for $1000. Mr van Dijk arranged to auction the painting through Webb’s Gallery in Auckland. There was no interest expressed before the auction except one offer of $5000, plus $500 towards advertising expenses, from Simon Mitchell, a lawyer who had once worked in Helen Clark’s electorate office.

In essence (and it was commented upon at the time) it appears that Simon Mitchell may have bought the painting (off the original buyer) in order to “shut down the controversy” (of Helen Clark’s “art forgery”).

Although I wouldn’t go so far as to suggest that he is acting inappropriate this time (in terms of his statement yesterday), it does seem curious that the guy has form in stepping up to protect the Labour hierarchy when the shit is hitting the fan, what to make of that?!!!

  I read Mitchell’s statement last night. Two things stood out.
  
  1. He claims the claimant was to send him the details of the claim; and
  
  2. He has had his computer “examined forensically”.
  
  Point 1. Why would the claimant be in direct contact with the Enquiry Committee? The information for the enquiry should have been “mananged/handled” by a secretary to the enquiry.
  
  Point 2. Why the need to get the computer examined forensically? If, the data was being emailed to him. His email records held on the email server is the place to look, not his PC.

Labour and their supporters are in denial and despite the conference calls over the weekend, they still lack credibility.

First. The appointment of a QC to run 3 different investigations. The question that begs, is why does an investigation need to be conducted by a senior barrister?

Second, through the sacking (or forced resignatikn) of Haworth and Simon Mitchell’s statement, there appears to be a heavy suggestion that there was an attempt by the Labour Party to rig the first enquiry, by limiting information presented to it.

Third, the message has gone out that the leader must be protected at all costs (including the truth). What is clear is that what Jacinda said last week is the “truth”.

What happened and how matters were dealt with are irrelevant, protecting brand Jacinda is everything.

    The promise was made during the Speech from the Throne, at the opening of this Parliament. The words may have been uttered by the Governor-General, but they are Ardern’s words.
    
    She reinforced her intention by appointing Clare Curran to be the first Minister for Open Government, which was her first mistake as PM. Justice Minister Andrew Little has said that UK media naming the man accused of murdering British backpacker Grace Millane is potentially jeopardising a fair trial, which could heap more misery on the grieving Millane family.

From “Labour investigator: No one told me about sexual assault complaints” – “At no time during that meeting did she say that she had been sexually assaulted by the subject of the complaint or disclose the events that are the subject of The Spinoff article.” – to “Bennett said that Ardern should come clean and say whether the ex-staffer was getting a payout” and “Ardern has offered to meet the complainants, but it is not yet clear whether this offer will be accepted.”

So massive interference at all levels as apposed to just knowing the perpetrator’s name.

+ Brookie had initially sought to appeal Judge Thomas’ decision but decided to abandon the process and instead he made a fresh application for name suppression. He did so on the basis of fair trial grounds as a result of events between his client’s first appearance and transfer to the High Court.

  The important thing politically is that on 9th Sept Ardern stated: “I was informed in the very beginning that the allegations made were not sexual in nature. That is obviously directly counter to what is now being reported.”
  
  Today she stated on National Radio and Newstalk ZB that of course she did know earlier that there were sexual allegations, and that’s why she brought in the QC.

Also, I have absolutely no faith in these enquiries. They will inevitably be a whitewash, there is no doubt about it. I am feeling really sad for this country. Don’t tell me there is minimal corruption. I have lost faith in our justice system and our police. I used to be proud of them but no more, they seem to dance to the PM’s tune and no longer pursue justice. Can’t help feeling rather depressed right now.

    For some time, I’ve been in favour of a meritocracy of some kind. You could only vote if you were a “net taxpayer” or had served with the armed services.
    
    Another **essential** step IMO would be to have a “competence test” of anyone who stood for local or central government.
    
    A “competence test” for **voters** would also be a good idea.
    
    Ok, “the devil is in the detail” as they say (e.g. who would create the “competence test”) and it **would** mean more cost and bureaucracy, but at least something along these lines would seem to be *far* better than what we have now.

Back when I was a teen in the 70s we had the, what seemed to us, very real existential threat of nuclear annihilation. Soviet Union and the West had their fingers hovering over buttons etc. Now the kids have climate change which they actually believe will kill them all before they get a chance to live. I think I preferred the nukes.
