    That final line cuts to the heart of the matter, and the heart of the scandal.
    
    Labour thinks if they can get some silly little girls to stop talking to Paula then this whole thing will go away, that the SLG’s (and Paula) are the problem.
    
    Lets use the JLR example. The JLR squirrel has been trotted out with predictable regularity in the past few weeks.
    
    JLR is a narcissistic manipulator. He should probably never have been allowed in parliament, and suspect you will be hard pressed to find a National party representative or Botany electorate voter to suggest otherwise. However what’s interesting is that what’s considered an aberration in National appears to be the Labour status quo.
    
    Indeed, so much of a status quo that Labour will go to extraordinary lengths to protect it, largely at the expense of vulnerable young people.
    
    Actions speak louder than words, especially if those words are wellness, kindness, transparency and responsibility.

    Fraser House must be breathing a sigh of relief that Paddy Gower retired as Newshub chief political reporter recently.
    
    Gower would have ripped senior Labour MP’s new ones left-right-and-centre over their disgraceful handling of the (multiple) allegations of physical, verbal and sexual assaults.
    
    One thing Gower is (as we’ve seen over the years) is that he is not an apologist for such bullying and mental abuse.
    
    Gower wouldn’t have stopped and pursued Labour until he had a scalp, a real not token one that’s for sure!

    It did not work fine for me.
    
    I have a new Fibre Internet connection, a new Panasonic Smart TV with the Spark Sport app pre installed.
    
    I was able to watch the opening ceremony, and the early games yesterday.
    
    The ABs game was beset with glitches, loss of quality and freezing of video. I sold consumer electronics for nearly 20 years, and there is no issue with my configuration.
    
    The issue is at Sparks end.

      Sounds like Spark are blaming their overseas feed and are about to make a decision to simulcast today’s games on TVNZ.

  Imagine if the (rest of) the MSM stopped the MP’s (when they are on their daily routine passing through parliament’s hallways) to ask them how they think ALL victims of sexual assault should be treated in the aftermath of alleged incident(s), generally speaking of course? Perhaps the Labour/NZF MP’s might be more respectful as a result and stop minimising the problem?

Labour, and a Labour Prime Minister have proved unequal to the task of turning New Zealand’s justice system into a place where a young woman can be absolutely confident of being heard, supported and protected. A place where the search for evidence of her allegations is conducted by a police force with maximum rigor and minimum prejudice. A place where courtrooms are not turned into torture chambers for revictimizing and retraumatising rape victims all over again. A place where the rights of the accused are not transformed into weapons of reputational annihilation. That is the true scandal. [1]

That one paragraph, by Chris Trotter, more clearly puts the current sexual assault in perspective, when as several people before this have tried to contrast the issue with Jacinda Ardern’s address to the United Nations General Assembly –

It seems surprising that in this modern age we have to recommit ourselves to gender equality, but we do. And I for one will never celebrate the gains we have made for women domestically, while internationally other women and girls experience a lack of the most basic of opportunity and dignity.
Me Too must become We Too. – Jacinda Ardern [2]

But is that a cheap shot? It seems a betrayal, but of whom. Ardern betraying a young woman. Or the Labour Party betraying Ardern. Are they really just treating as “the Show Pony” that she so absolutely hates to be called?

Chris Trotter’s blog also had this comment –
I completely agree your assessment that Jacinda was kept completely in the dark. You can just see it. But it shows how her party views her as a mascot. Not as a real leader but as a figurehead to draw the attention of the voters while they get on with the real job of government.
At the moment the labour party does not look as if they deserve her. – D J S [1]

And wonder again even, was Winston selecting more a figurehead than a leader?
Do not forget to pay Winston the attention that he so desperately desires.

I think the toxicity is endemic amongst certain of its more tribal supporters – male and female – and doesn’t take much to bubble to the surface..

I am amazed by how people who appear to stand for certain kinds of equality, gender-fairness and women’s rights apparently find it acceptable to use mysogynistic, abusive and downright threatening and violent language to abuse Paula Bennett.

Facebook is a real cess-pit in this respect.

        I was also peeved that very few folk identified the bullying … some folks clearly got a kick out of seeing the crap I was subjected to.
        
        I have moved in “Left/Green ” circles for most of my life… not in any formal sense, but environmental folks/pacifists / Wellington Public servants/ Island Bay folk incline that way.
        
        I don’t know any National Party members and have never socialised with folks from the “Right”… but somehow because I queried the NZ Temperature Record on this blog, I became an object for vilification from a perverse group of anonymous men.

    It’s a big issue in the US – under affirmative action policies Asian-Americans are not being permitted entry into Universities in anything like the numbers that their test scores warrant because their places have been assigned to Black and Hispanic students with lower test scores – and many, including Asians themselves of course, aren’t happy about it.

    Because the former includes just about anyone, including beneficiaries.

  Because he’s a bloody good footballer. Williams was fine last night, except for one wayward kick. His first action was just seconds after coming on, when he absolutely smashed a Springbok trying to break down his channel. He threw a fantastic cut-out pass that almost led to a try, and his defence was huge.
  
  Other features – Ardie Savea will be to this team what Jerome Kaino was to the 2011 RWC team; a massive physical presence. Jack Goodhue will struggle to get back to first choice centre, because Anton Lienert-Brown is playing out of his skin. George Bridge and Sevu Reece looked right at home in a white-hot atmosphere, and both Scott Barrett and Kietan Read had huge, physical games.

      Agree completely. And Reece Hodge of Australia is likely to be cited for a shoulder charge to the head of the Fijian flanker. Hopefully the English TMO who said there was nothing to see will be cited as well. It was worse than Scott Barrett’s because the Fijian was concussed, and out of the game.

    The TAB offered $15 for odds about Ardie being Man of the Match.
    
    First, it appeared as though the losing No. 10 was gonna get the award (Eh???) but then they gave it to Beauden Barrett.
    
    The game was eerily reminiscent of the one I was at a month or so back at the Cake Tin – early South African pressure, then some All Blacks points, then a last frenzied set of Boks attacks that all but got them another draw.
    
    Some big assumptions, natch but New Zealand’s route to the Final now looks like Scotland (Quarters), England (Semis) and South Africa.
    
    The Boks would face Ireland (Quarters), Wales/Australia (Semis) and then the All Blacks.

Went and saw Dara O Briain in Wellington on Friday. Seen some of the set before on “Live at the Apollo” but watching him work the audience members in the front row is comedy gold. Especially the British man who moved to NZ to teach them how to appreciate rugby more, and the very drunk Irishman who shouted out then staggered out halfway through (The dedication to “absent friends” at the end was a classic).

• Shaw said there was a huge spectrum of opinion in the agricultural community about the Zero Carbon Bill. He could understand why some people were worried and fearful.

• It was “very annoying” that plans for light rail from the Auckland CBD to Mt Roskill had been delayed.

His comments come ahead of the United Nations Climate Action Summit in New York on Tuesday (NZT), at which Prime Minister Jacinda Arden will be speaking. [1]

Will Ardern’s reference on climate change emission in fact be as vacuous as her “Me Too Must Become We Too” UN address last time?

Where is a statement that there is one simple reduction in any single emission?

And there is no mention of the trees.
The trees that lock up carbon, “kick it down the road” as this Government does with every other single issue – committees, working groups, what-to-fucking-do about anything and everything: kick it down the road – and in the case of carbon being released again from forest sinks, let Neve contemplate that.

What the hell happened to LETS DO THIS? That actually suggested doing something … soonish
Let’s reduce one actual emission? Where? Or when?

Watching one of the ‘nature’ TV programs and isn’t it wonderful as to how at the last moment the rare target animal is spied on the very last day of the expeditions permits to be ‘there’
Cynical me would suggest the filming of the ‘rare animal’ was achieved upon the teams arrival on site and all the supposed emergencies and accidents are studio editing for dramatic effect.

Food for thought for the rugby enthusiasts not drowned by spark:
The All Black v Springbok test was an eye opener. If we weren’t sure of what the Abs were up to, we got a clue last night. We also saw answered the question about small backs as though players like McCormack, Batty or Terry Wright, or Birtwistle and Bob Scott hadn’t already answered. Reece is a powerhouse (as he showed in the 2nd test against aussie) and so is the taller and leaner Bridge. The apparent weakness was put to the test straight away, mis stepped slightly under pressure of the high ball arriving with rampaging tackles before becoming a menace combining with Savea, Smith, Barrett and Mo’unga. It was up front that impressed at the outset. Kane was colossal and little more was said about the game than his presence of mind to not return to his side of the field but rather wait before the bok half passed the ball. The pack was disciplined all round. I think Scott Barrett changed the game with a major turn over before his try. He showed what a back row we have and why we can claim to have 4 of the best locks in the world and one who can play on the side of the scrum with equal or greater impact. Kieran had already hit his straps in the 2nd test against the Aussies but lifted further. He was born to face that bok pack with a smile.
The AB’s matched the frenetic pace the boks brought then slipped up a notch. Not only was Mo’unga stretching the crushing defence by kicking the ball to the wings, it was often coming back quickly to the centre for Beauden Barrett to look to step through the middle. That wasn’t meant to happen while outside him Leinart-Brown’s attacking style of jinking jittery running made perfect sense for those that fondly recall the prince of centres and his so different silky style before Bunce took over.
At the outset when things weren’t quite happening for Reece and Bridges, the Abs just keep going relentlessly until the ball and moves did stick. Passes at speed were caught in congestion when it looked impossible, the game continued like that as the defence became more brutal from the ABs toward the end of the 1st half.
The boks came right back in the 2nd when the danger was they would be swamped and may have had the AB’s start not had a couple of glitches. What they will have learnt as maybe we did was a glimpse of what is to come, the turbo charger pace the AB’s have got up their sleeves to fight a smothering defence, and their sudden discipline and ball control. It’s hard not to imagine that at 17-3 down before being able to right back into the game while stronger in the scrum didn’t lift the boks but hopefully they may just be wondering what to expect next should the 2 teams met again in this world cup.

It seems that former Labour Cabinet Minister and current Mayor of Christchurch Lianne Dalziel was informed as long ago as May about claims a Christchurch City Councillor had been behaving creepily and sending lewd and sexually inappropriate texts to several young people aged between 13 and 21. And what did Lianne Dalziel do? It would appear to be next to nothing. Gosh, who’d have thought it!.

The name of the Councillor has not been published but it will be interesting to see if it is one of the numerous Labour- affiliated People’s Choice representatives on the Council.

Lianne is busily defending her in/actions.

We were watching 1News last night and they had that guy ‘Sav’ standing outside the stadium in Yokohana previewing the WC footy game. The thing that really impressed me was just how orderly the crowd were as they quietly filed past into the gates. None of that childish crap like we see here, with all that spastic carry-on by the great unwashed as they try to imprees there drunk and stoned mates in front of the camera. No. Just a respectful orderly queue of well groomed Japanese who know how to behave in public. As my partner remarked, “That’s exactly the type of society you can expect to find in a country that still retains the death penalty”

  Yes Trotter is hinting that Robertson is facing “interesting times” ahead and Trotter’s last sentence suggests Ardern needs to think about his future …
  
  But Trotter’s article also subtly lays out that Robbo is the master (plotter) and has done the hard work shoring up a network of supporters and getting them into positions of influence over the years.
  
  Whereas Ardern, like she is today, is the lazy do-nothing-but-ride-on-the-back of someone else’s (Robbo’s) hard work and efforts to get where she is without pretty much lifting a finger i.e. has been gifted her status.
  
  I doubt Ardern has the gumption and courage to do anything about Robbo (after all she “owes” him big-time).
  
  But if push comes to shove it will be interesting to see whether Ardern has to cut Robbo loose or whether she takes the fall herself to avoid such a (massive) conflict and confrontation?
  
  Luckily for Ardern it probably won’t be her choice – it will be a “Party” matter (and as to who is backing who).
  
  So, of course, the Labour Party inner circle will be plotting to ensure none of this happens but how long can they pretend there isn’t a problem that isn’t going away?

    Then I stayed up all night to watch it on TV. But again I stopped watching League & Rugby on TV when they ceased being free to air.
    And now I chuckle when they report that sports aren’t as popular any more. They killed the goose that laid the golden egg

One again the Herald decides we need yet another Simon Wilson propaganda article in saying how private car ownership is the new evil.

“It’s an idea: hardwired into the minds of billions of people that the best way to get around is in your own car. But it isn’t true. Not now, for many people. Not in 10 year’s time, for most people. Not in 20 years’ time for hardly anyone one.”

Is Simon Wilson seriously suggesting that hardly anyone will own their own car in 20 years, or even in 10 years? That Uber and driverless cars will solve all our transport issues?

To unpick. He might be right for the the relatively small proportion of people who live in CBD Auckland and Wellington. Say 5% of New Zealand’s population. But for the bulk of us who live in suburbs, in towns across New Zealand, and in rural areas, it is just pure fantasy.

I live in Bayswater, Auckland, a relatively inner suburb. Ten years ago there were hardly any cars packed on the street. Now every adult has a car, so typically 3 or 4 per household, so now lots of cars parked on the kerb. I use my car everyday for a myriad of different journeys. I also use the ferry about twice a week to go into the CBD, and now the weather is a bit better I am using my electric bike for small errands.

Am I, or my neighbours, going to all give up our cards within the next ten years, so we can all wait around 30 minutes or more to wait for the Uber to turn up, so we can, take kids to school, go to the supermarket, take stuff to the boat, see a friend for coffee, go to work in Albany (or a host of other things). Not going to happen, not in 10 years for in 20 years.

I am heartily sick of the Herald giving a full page (or more) for Simon Wilson’s lecture weekly lecture about how I should live my life. It is all about his green ideology, nothing else.

As for his future projections, they don’t seem to be connected to the real world. Seemingly he has no idea about how most people actually live, and their freedom to choose, which is what the private car is all about. His path is effectively socialism.

As for his predictions of the future. Well, here is my view, and my reasoning, starting with car production cycles.

Most car manufacturers have just completed their major model changes in the last year or so. There were not many electrics in the last cycle (2017 to 2020). But the next cycle will have lots of electric cars (model cycle 2023 to 2026). And just about all electric and large amount of autonomous driving in the model cycle for 2029 to 2032.

Most people throughout the world don’t buy new cars, they can’t afford them. So it will be another 10 years, basically 2040, before most people are in electric and substantially autonomous cars.

Maybe the level of individual car ownership in the developed world will be seen to have peaked around now. That we do actually have too many. Possibly Wilson is right on that. Maybe in 2030 will be more like it was in 2000 with less private car ownership than now. But as for private ownership basically disappearing, it won’t happen. Not unless we have a majority Green government determined to deal to Julie Anne Genter’s car fascists. Re-education camps, anyone?

  Solar panels will be molded into the shape of car panels and electric cars will be self charging.
  No need for power stations, transmission lines, petrol stations or charging points (for cars).
  This will mean MORE cars on the roads, not less.
  SO…start building them roads NOW.
  Is my prediction less valid than his?
  I certainly believe that my prediction is better formed, formulated and possible than his. It is certainly less regressive than his.

    10x power output would break the laws of thermodynamics.
    Current commercial solar panels (that you might install on the roof of a house) are about 20% efficient (ie 20% of solar irradiance converted to electrical energy).
    The best attainable values in the lab so far are 40% (non-concentrated light) and 47% (concentrated light), and the theoretical maximum is about 68%.
    
    So realistically, solar efficiency is unlikely see more than a 2x increase, and that’s assuming the current research cells can be made commercially viable (not a given, considering the materials/processes involved).
    
    With regard to solar powered cars, most of NZ receives about 2000 sunshine hrs/year (about 5.5/day on average), which equates to about 5kWh of solar energy per square meter per day, or 2kWh of electrical energy (with 40% efficient solar panels). So if you could fit 5 sq.m of solar panels on your Nissan Leaf, keep them all perpendicular to the sun, and in the open the whole day (not in the garage/under a tree/in the shadow of a building), you might get enough energy (in summer) for your daily commute…

      In the 19th century, the only way to go faster, move more loads, was to buy more horses.
      UNTIL someone invented a way to do it without horses…the rest is history.
      The sun is the largest source of energy in the solar system (we could argue, the only source directly/ indirectly).
      You assume no further scientific discovery, which has never been true over the history of mankind.
      Usually the observation. “necessity is the mother of invention”,is what has driven all advancements.
      Horse to car….would be a good example.

        The sun might be the largest energy source in the solar system, but it only irradiates the earth with approx 1kW of energy per square meter (when its not cloudy etc). And given that only a few square meters (max) of a car will be facing the sun at any given time, it means a car covered in solar panels is only ever going to be self sufficient for very low usage (eg 10km/day or less, on average). Otherwise, all it does is shave a bit off your electricity bill vs charging an electric car without solar panels.
        
        Maybe that small saving will be worth the upfront expense in the future (in some places), but its never going to reduce the need for energy distribution infrastructure. The only way that could happen is if all buildings were covered in solar panels, and all buildings had several days of battery capacity (to see out bad weather).

  Listen Dave c I have a Phillip’s TV over 5 years old and I purchased a chromecast ultra to fit to the TV it was easy to install and had no trouble watching first Aussie v Fiji then All Blacks v South Africa straight after, the colour, sound with picture were excellent streaming off my Samsung Phone. But how true is this in exposing the hypocrisy of the Global Warming/climate change hoax

It’s simply called “Growing Up”…

To all the school kids going on “strike” for Climate Change.

You are the first generation who have required air-conditioning in every classroom.

You want TV in every room and your classes are all computerised.

You spend all day and night on electronic devices.
More than ever, you don’t walk or ride bikes to school but arrive in caravans of private cars that choke suburban roads and worsen rush hour traffic.
You are the biggest consumers of manufactured goods ever and update perfectly good expensive luxury items to stay trendy.

Your entertainment comes from electric devices.
Furthermore, the people driving your protests are the same people who insist on artificially inflating the population growth through immigration, which increases the need for energy, manufacturing and transport.

The more people we have, the more forest and bush land we clear and more of the environment is destroyed.

How about this…

Tell your teachers to switch off the air-con.
Walk or ride to school.

Switch off your devices and read a book.
Make a sandwich instead of buying manufactured fast food.

No, none of this will happen because you are selfish, badly educated, virtue signalling little turds, inspired by the adults around you who crave a feeling of having a “noble cause” while they indulge themselves in Western luxury and unprecedented quality of life.”

Wake up, grow up and shut up until you are sure of the facts before protesting.*

I’m really loving/appreciating the commentary in the Ireland–Scotland game.

Two knowledgeable guys, calmly describing the play for their TV audience, whom they respect. No manic behaviour; no histrionics. Just clear, reasoned, discussion of what they’re seeing.

Compared to our clowns, who, for 40+ plus years now, have excitedly screamed and yelled at us, it is just so refreshing.
