  What an awful start to today’s GD.
  
  Our business worked with a family who lost a child a year ago today in Al Noor mosque. My wife and other staff attended the little boy’s funeral, and were only to happy to don scarves they had brought along themselves for the duration of the service as a mark of respect.
  
  Yes; I find the whole concept of women being forced by their husbands to cover up completely at odds with my values. That doesn’t mean that I won’t observe another culture’s customs when I interact with them, especially in a time of profound grief.

    House prices started to rise under Clark, paused during the GFC but began to rise once the economy gained strength. You can’t forget that the RBNZ dropped the OCR from above 8% to around 2% at the same time as housing consents were far below average (for around 4 years) so of course prices would rise quite significantly.

  The major reason why I disagree with MMP is that our local MPs are not accountable. Here in the Wairarapa we have Alistair Scott who gained the confidence of the majority of the people in the province. That’s good, that’s how it should be.
  
  But we also have list MP Kieran McNulty of Labour “representing” us. I went to a town hall the election before last and Kieran’s centrepiece to get elected in the Wairarapa was homosexual marriage. Now the good people of the Wairarapa have many priorities ; jobs, housing, water, economic growth to name but a few. Homosexual marriage could not be lower down the list of priorities! Indeed the majority opposed it.
  
  Now he is in parliament and he is voting for abortion up until birth. Again this is not a priority for the people, indeed many oppose it. But Kieran doesn’t care. He is not accountable to anyone but the Labour Party hierarchy. Jacinda tells him what to do!
  
  MMP is wrong because it puts in the house of representatives people who are not accountable to the people. When I think of the damage wrought by unaccountable parliamentarians, Sue Bradford and her anti smacking bill is another example, I believe we need to change our parliamentary system.
  
  This cannot go on. We have too many politicians, Andrew Little is another one, who have never won the confidence of the people but there they sit. Making bad laws and never being held to account by actual people who actually voted for them. Our MPs don’t actually represent us. They represent their party hierarchy and the elites in Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch who pull their strings. We need change urgently.

    On the hand, there are some FPP countries with similar laws regarding marriage and abortion, so I am not sure that you can rest all the blame on MMP. It may be, Scott, that your religious beliefs sometimes put you out of step with the rest of your greater community.

    I agree 100% with your “dissection” of the MMP voting system.
    My dictionary stets that the meaning of democracy is
    “government of a country through a parliament of representatives elected by them.”
    With all of the list MPs selected by the political parties and not elected by the people, we don’t actually have a democratic government!!
    A return to FPP starts to sound better and better

    And I will add that MMP was introduced so that minority views could be represented – so we were told.
    However, National and Labour did nothing other than use the private members bills to sabotage that democratic process:
    The anti-smackers, the prostitutes and the gays never ever bothered forming a party, instead they were all represented by private members bills, all of which were not discussed before elections – but made shortly after the election.
    
    As everyone can see Scott — views that voters DON’T HOLD are being placed FIRST AND FOREMOST at the front of their political party — AFTER AN ELECTION.
    
    Private members bills corrupt the democratic process. 😎

    Scott: ACT, or the New Conservatives should push for a MMP referendum at the 2023 election. MMP has been a disaster. NZ gets forced further left each election cycle. With FPP, NZ Worst would have been gone by now, and the ‘Greens’ too.

      And 44% of the votes would have got 55% of the MPs. If the chips fell right, one could have the most MPs without having the largest share of the popular vote (Muldoon 1981).
      
      If there is to be another referendum (making it three) it needs to be soon – by 2023 anyone under 50 will only have known MMP by then. Only oldies will remember FPP.

  Sometimes reference is made on here about the trying economic conditions, downturns, earthquakes, rebuilds and world events that the previous National government had to navigate and manage over the “nine long years of neglect”.
  The Labour opposition criticised and moaned about the efforts of Key, English and the rest during that period while offering no solutions or assistance themselves.
  Now the CoL is under the pump and, by the looks of her, it is taking a toll on Ms Ardern.
  Perhaps she and her fellow travellers might reflect on their time in opposition and acknowledge that it is not as simple as they think it is to be an effective government.
  It is when things go badly wrong that we see the quality of response.

Jacinda Ardern knows she has blood on her hands over the measles epidemic that moved from NZ to the Pacific Islands mainly Samoa without any containment plan, so now over two months in from the start of the Coronavirus she stops people returning to the Islands in case they might carry the virus. Over two months since the Coronavirus started and virus could have bolted by that time, so is this another attempt by ourout of her depth Prime Minister to cover her tracks and grandstand to Pacific Islands people in NZ or is another vote catching idea to help her and her Government gain the Treasury Benches at the upcoming Elections.

  The sad thing is that Samoa and Tahiti have had plans in place for the last 2-4 weeks around this while we had nothing. Our PM seems to have gone from nothing to worry about to hair on fire in 0.3 seconds and made policy on the fly again.

  I was once on the same shuttle bus from Auckland Airport to the city as Ruud, and watched him having a very unpleasant meltdown towards the driver, something to do with payment, although I didn’t catch the details. He came across as a very rude, boorish Dutchman – the ho-ho-ho bonhomie seems to be just a facade for the cameras. I haven’t been able to stomach watching him on TV ever since.

  MP, Ruud was always very explicit in matters regarding entomology, with sexual little tidbits added, for his amusement only I think. He then got into the advertising game for house cleaners and sort of lost his way. I have had Dutch relatives and the ones from the north of Holland seemed more thoughtful in their remarks. My late brother in law used to joke about the ‘crude’ residents of southern Holland, some ‘hewn out of stone’. I am not sure where Ruud hails from.

So after the restrictions were announced, I commented on the Stuff Facebook post of the story, essentially criticising the late response and outright lie that these are the toughest restrictions in the world. Someone replied on my post, insulting me and suggesting I could do no better than the PM (I think I could be more decisive but that’s not really the point – I’m not in the job).

I recognised the name so clicked on the profile. Turns out it wasn’t the guy I knew with that name, but his profile tag line was ‘Senior Advisor to the PM’. So fear not people, they’re spending time insulting people on Facebook during a pandemic. Awesome.

  Jews consider non-Jews goyim (or cattle). So when a Jew talks about “Jews and non-Jews” somehow being equal, they are lying through their teeth. A foundational principle of Judaism is that they see themselves as God’s chosen people. By inference, other ethnicities are not chosen.
  
  I’d love to see Israel not be the only and blatant holdout when it comes to increasing ethnic diversity within its borders. Why is this the case? Only when they take in swathes of third worlders will I take anything they say seriously.

Once Ardern realised she had got a Silver Medal for missing out with the cancellation of the Christchurch memorial. She finally decided to try and recover her imagined high ground position.
Rushing in and making a so called unilateral decision, to without warning attack NZs Travel Industry .Her comments she made “no apologies’ for putting into affect border and entry conditions for all and sundry by travellers into NZ by midnight Sunday said to be the toughest in the World .
What a pity to make that type of comment when after all she was doing was emulating Israel who had introduced Arderns “big idea” into their country weeks ago .A copy cat.
Sadly for the Peters selected wee girl from Morrinsville to be NZs PM two Silver Medals in one day . Also not a good look for someone out of their depth . Thanks to Winston Peters.

    Local elections were just postponed for a year in the UK. We are not quite at that point yet, but if more elections are postponed or cancelled in other countries, then plans should start being made for an online or postal only election.

      Postponing the election could be a valid option but there would need to be a consensus of Parliament ie Jacinda will have to get Simon’s agreement (which would probably over her dead body). If this did happen the Government should go into ‘caretaker’ mode (AFAIK outlined in the Cabinet Manual) from the date the House would normally rise and the House should rise at that date anyway and only convene for any very urgent business.

    Yes Captain, That thought had crossed my mind as well. The only saving grace is that we are yet to start the election process (officially) but who will know what the Winter will bring health wise. Charitably I could ascribe any delay to wider health concerns. However uncharitably, I could also see that Ardern needs time for all the ill-directed money they are throwing about in hope that some of it sticks long enough to do some good to Labour’s election chances, and for her to show at least some competency and leadership (which some Labour officials see the covid-19 as such an opportunity according to Peter Dunne).

Not so sure. To date the most important control against the Wuhan virus was the China travel ban.

This Ardern, after pressure from Australia / Trump Admin, got right.

John Key’s airline wanted to keep flying into the shit hole China – was stopped by Ardern. And the Chinese CG in Auckland said everything was fine with Chinese people coming into NZ. Just like Italy it seems.

Given how influence the Chinese CG has over National then NZ would probably look like Italy had Key or English been calling the shots.

  Totally wrong, Air NZ stopped flights to Shanghai almost immediately and from an industry perspective have actually been one of the best airlines to deal with over this. Also shout out to Emirates who have been amazingly flexible with their policies as well.
  Don’t trash what you have minimal knowledge of, my industry is doing it hard but effective right now. We are focusing on getting our clients home, rearranging their holidays and trying not to go mad in the process.
  Kia Kaha to all who will suffer during this time.

    Exactly. There will be people scheduled to arrive in New Zealand over the next few weeks who have booked holidays. Are they really all going to isolate themselves for 2 weeks? Where will they do that.?
    
    The restrictions come into effect at midnight. Between midnight and 0600 Monday there are 24 flights scheduled to arrive in New Zealand. About 5000 to 6000 passengers. Many of these people will be tourists who have booked campervans and rental cars. Are they going to be denied access to those vehicles? I guarantee that most of them will simply proceed with their itineraries.

      Just checking through the campervan and rental car websites, all of them seem to be offering a full refund on bookings that are affected by government-imposed travel restrictions. Good to see.
      
      However, if you have booked through a third party website (e.g. https://www.rentalcars.com/) you need to negotiate them. An example of why I am always reluctant to book travel services through third party agents.

We do not quarantine on arrival,instead we request self isolation. And what does that mean for an arriving tourist? Avoid crowds and restaurants. That sounds more like social distancing to me.

  The MSC Magnifica was banned from unloading in Hobart yesterday which had just returned from New Zealand, now on its way to Sydney.

  Meat, milk, cheese, butter, fruit, vegetables, grains, grapes for wine, hops for beer and base ingredients for hundreds of other food and clothing products.
  Not sure about toilet paper or drain clogging wipes though.
  Easy to rubbish primary produce growers behind the keyboard and I guess we will still be rubbished in the media if supply chain is not maintained.

      Those who have committed to Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour are covered. “He will give his angels in charge over thee..” Been there: my car was pushed back about 6m and a head on collision avoided. I had no part in it except to be surprised at the time and thankful afterwards. I could feel the deceleration. I have seen other miracles too. Is this in the news anywhere? Australia is running out of Reagents for testing. My contacts in Australia sent me this this morning:

“Epidemiology stats show that the curve becomes seriously logarithmic. Even a day or 2 delay could mean the difference of thousands. Australia is only closing schools if they have a positive case.
However, we are running out of the reagents for the test and we are no longer going to test anybody who is sick. They will just force them to self isolate at home. Therefore, the policy of waiting for a positive case is obviously stupid.
We ICU doctors and public health doctors believe that schools, churches, Unix, gyms …… everything should have been shut down last week. Look at Italy. They didn’t shut anything down and now the virus has shut it down for them with many many deaths. The hit to their economy is estimated at a trillion plus dollars. They will take a decade to recover. “

  They should ask South Korea – SK was able to pump out 20,000 tests a day and never ran out. They switched a manufacturing plant into overdrive. They also report that they have been successful in flattening the curve.
  
  USA also should ask, they’re only using US-made tests and there is a serious shortage of them.

Just watched Q+A, Jack tame did some good work getting out of Cindy what sort of relief would be coming (targeted, etc). But the union woman was delusional; when asked to chose between keeping jobs and raising minimum wage, she folded her arms like a 4 year old and said “both!”

My thought was with all this downtime for people now, this is an ideal opportunity for training. We could have every person in the tourist trade first-aid qualified, and possibly kiwihost trained (or the current equivalent). Got employees with little or no english? Take the government handout but on the condition they attend a 2 week language course put on for free.
If I have to self-isolate, I have 3 projects I can work on at home that will add value for my employer.

Spare a thought for Sky in all this (okay, just joking, but…). They’ll be hurting. If the whole rugby season goes belly up, which looks likely, I imagine the thousands of Kiwis who only get it for sport – mainly rugby – will dump it till normal transmission is resumed. You can buy a lot of good streaming content for far less than the basic Sky package, and cancel or restart at anytime. Of course it might also force Sky to drop prices, drastically, to stay afloat.
Interesting times in the media world.

Struggling to understand why the Super Rugby competition wasn’t updated to allow the NZ teams by themselves, Aussie teams (to include Japan – which is already happening to some extent and SA teams (to include Argentina) to all play at home to find the top 2 teams on points for the substitute competition then ultimately travel to the most virus-free country of the 5 for the final and follow travel protocols for CV on the way home or when arriving home. They’d still get a TV audience even if the individual countries stopped live audiences.

The following article puts a lie to claims that the Muslim community were against commemorating the Mosque anniversary attacks Actually the very opposite was the case.

Examples,

“Linwood Mosque general secretary and Islamic Centre trustee Faisal Sayed inside Linwood Mosque. He says members of the mosque community supported a remembrance service on March 15.”

“ Muslim Association of Canterbury general secretary Feroze Mohammed Ditta says there were different views among the culturally diverse mosque communities about the one year anniversary of the mosque attacks, but most supported the remembrance service.’

And,
“…So, you’re not mourning, you are saying they have gone on and we will, in our turn, follow them.”

Green said Islam did not forbid followers from mourning “because we know we need to honour those people who have been killed”, but it emphasised the need to create a positive legacy from the loss.

Following consultations with attack victims over several meetings and with support from Al Noor Imam Gamal Fouda, the majority of the community was supportive of the event….”

Finally ,

On Monday Fouda called for a national remembrance service to be held every year on March 15.

He told the NZ Herald the attacks were “crimes against humanity” and warranted an exception to normal Islamic practice.

“Anywhere in New Zealand, if Muslims want to apply the normal rule, they can apply it outside of Christchurch – but in here, it’s an exception – because we are here to say that the voice of love should be louder than the voice of evil.”

Of course it now maybe academic as a consequence of the cancellation but I suspect behind the largely misinformed claims lurks a veiled Islamaphpbia. Not forgetting the opportunity to besmircht the PM.

      There is another consideration – it’s a public memorial – the wider community will certainly support commemorations.

Govt is too slow; too many regulations. That’s why the testing kits took so long to come out. But Trump has dumped all that and just given the go-ahead.

  Australian tourist who just got back from France who came here before the results came out, he’s getting a lot of hatred on his Facebook page at the moment.
  Seventh case was a woman who came from Denmark, she came to Queenstown on March the 10th and possibly spread it within that time, I sure hope not. At least she drove in a private rental.

We have a friend coming to NZ from Alaska in 2 weeks. Via Hawaii with a 17 hour stand down in Honolulu. Arrivals from the Pacific Islands are exempt, but Hawaii is not. I guess Hawaii is not in the Pacific anymore.
Best she cancel, as a 14 day self isolation not going to work for her 12 days here. Half marathon in the Sth Island is off the cards too.

  Hawaii is not the Pacific Islands in the colloquial sense.
  
  It is the 50th state of the United States of America, and as such has American responses and American people movement (i.e. a LOT more than e.g. Tahiti).

Interesting insight to the IRD and their minister Stuart Nash change strategy.

IRD is ‘overhauling’ their systems. Expected to be ready by 2021. The intention by then is to reduce the need to call IRD, rather do more online.
So the first thing they do is reduce their call-taking staff ! Brilliant !
In 2015 761 staff were taking calls. Now that number is 477. 37% fewer.
I’m surprised they haven’t rolled out the nine years of neglect canard for this one.
