      I know a NZ family whose daughter was raped by a potential NZ Islamic Terrorist in Auckland.. He was given nine months curfew . had to be in between the hours of Midnight and Seven am. Plus some counselling and put on NZs Sex offenders register. . Yet on facebook he was photographed holding a rapid fire machine gun. The picture was shown to our NZ Police. They said nothing to see there ,move on.
      The rape by the offender was proven . yet look at the sentence. Could it be he was a Muslim. Surely not. hahahaha.

Healthy Homes Guarantee Act – is Mr Twyford deliberately misleading us? So (finally) someone has delved into the NZIER cost benefit analysis, and come up with several interesting conclusions. Just a few but many more in the document linked below.

– NZIER’s cost benefit analysis is ‘client friendly’. (Read between the lines.)
– Huge numbers of rentals are cold and damp. However –

A comprehensive survey by Building Research Association New Zealand found that only 2.7 percent of tenants thought that their rental was cold and damp. Of that percentage it was not clear what proportion was due to inadequate use of heating and a failure to ventilate by tenants.

– We can trust NZIER amd MBIE to do a decent cost benefit analysis. Hmmm, maybe not …. especially when NZIER were apparently directed by MBIE to leave some things out of the analysis eg underfloor insulation.

Cost benefit outcomes are negative not positive The NZIER’s cost benefit analyses of the proposals were generally ‘client friendly’. Key ‘unhelpful’ documents were sometimes ignored, costs were systematically understated, and unrealistic methodologies were adopted that overstated the net benefits. Our assessments of the net benefits is that they are strongly negative

  govt consultants are mystical creatures that are handed answers by the govt so that they may, after a suitable interval, hand those same answers back accompanied by a large invoice.
  
  In many ways the same as studying the humanities when the real task is to divine and then flatter the beliefs (however ridiculous) of the people who do the marking.

  I think the case for insulation is strongly positive. Makes a huge difference. After that it gets trickier. When I have rented places I would never live in a home that relied on plug in portable heaters. But I like being warm and can pay the bills.
  
  But I have seen high quality properties covered in mould because the tenants refuse to use the heating because they can’t or won’t pay the power bills. And most importantly they leave the windows and curtains closed all winter. So inevitably, landlords will be installing heat pumps that don’t get used. Or there will be a second round effect where the landlord insulates and does the heat pumps and renovates. Then up goes the rent and the incumbent tennant needs to move out.
  
  Then there is the scenario where the landlord simply exits and puts the house on the market as is. It gets snapped up by a first home buyer. Who of course is not required to meet the healthy homes standard.

    However, you loose less than 10% of total heat through the floor in a normal house. The old silver paper sisalation used to provide 95% of the insulation of either blankets or foam but it’s no longer used because fuckwits keep stapling the paper through underfloor wiring.
    
    Imagine total house heating account being 50% of the power bill which seems to average $200 per month so approx $10 per month lost through the floor or $120 per annum or $1200 for 10 years which is still less than the average cost for retrofitted underfloor insulation.
    
    Therefore…a waste of money in my book and a decent carpet and underlay solves the bulk of the problem anyway.

    Winkelmann observed in her presentation that criminal appeal success rates had declined markedly (Ive lost the figure but it has gone from something like 43% percent successful or partially successful in 2002 to something like 28% in 2017, which is statistically significant. There wasn’t any real insight as to why (for example, no obvious correlation with legal aid changes), though generally the thrust was that she wanted to see more appeals, particularly as to sentencing.

        Still, what is Mark Lundy to make of this? He maintains he is innocent yet the new chief justice says she is sure he is guilty. Her questioning in the appeal court led all to believe she was sure he was innocent, so something happened, something changed. Should we be comfortable about this, or profoundly disturbed.

    What she signed as an appeal court judge and what she knows is true are irreconcilable.

At least Prime news gave it a decent covering.

That’s both of the last 2 launches ignored by TV1, rather they put put on inane drivel and crap. Methinks they hate Rocket Lab for some perverted reason?

    NZ has signed its sovereignty away with this US-owned venture.
    
    No other lot in NZ will ever be able to launch rockets/satellites without it having to be approved by the US.
    
    The agreement requires the US to provide a written statement about spacecraft it proposes to launch from New Zealand, but precludes New Zealand from launching any spacecraft that the US deems contrary to its laws or policies.

    One of the initial investors is a chap by the name of Mark Rocket (yes, Rocket). He made a heap of coin selling his online tourism directory to the Yellow Pages Group – it’s probably worth feck all now. I see that numbskull Dann is following the “progressive view” of the world economy and predicting a horrendous, that is worse than the GFC, world financial crisis.
But the reality is that the problems really boil down to China that is in economic trouble because many folks have eventually had Trump’s courage and are challenging China on trade and financial matters. Meanwhile the other leg of the chair that has broken and in urgent need of remedial splints is the EU.       I defend the RSE scheme because it is on the whole well run benefiting both the agricultural sector and the participating developing countries. There are checks and balances in place within that scheme.

Over many many years I have never seen someone in an “unfortunate” situation income wise without them possessing the “lazy bugger” gene.

One of the consequences of this is the current government we have. Generally, people vote labour because they want something for themselves. They do not seem to give a stuff about their country or others, they just want more for themselves and believe the way to get it is to take it from those of us who do not carry the “lazy bugger” gene.

I have met people who are as thick as a post yet become very comfortable financially through hard work. They are rare and in general we have become very selective about what jobs we will accept.

I am now a well rewarded professional with my own business employing others but throughout my life I have done manual labour, factory work, pub work and in my early years often worked a second part time job.

That has paid off for myself and my family but I really resent being asked to provide for those unrelated to me who are too fucking lazy to get a job.

Our morning shows on radio and TV seem to stop weeks away from Christmas. I can understand Garner’s show closing early because TV3 has financial problems. The UK is really in the shit over Theresa May’s failed attempts to get out of the EU isn’t it?

The LA Times reports that the main concern for pro-Brexit lawmakers is a contentious insurance policy known as the “backstop,” which would keep the U.K. tied to EU customs rules in order to guarantee the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland remains open after Brexit.

My understanding is that the Brexiteers’ main reason for wanting out in the first place was for the UK to exercise sovereign control of its own borders…. so this proposal must be the worst of all outcomes!

I don’t think May will be able to swing this. Either the (delayed) ratification in parliament after Christmas will fail, or she will lose a no confidence vote in the house and resign, causing a general election.

Watching with interest.

  It kind of rolls off the tongue, but from what I understand it’s going to cause chaos left, right & centre.
  The alternatives are this plan of what’s her name otherwise known as a Clayton’s Brexit or a new referendum, working on the principle that you keep holding the bloody things until you get the result you want.
  Except a new referendum might not go the way they want.

    Not living in the UK, I don’t really have a firm opinion about whether they should leave or stay in the EU…. but at the time of the vote I thought that something as far-reaching as this should have needed a two-thirds majority. In many cases huge decisions are made on a simple majority vote, but I don’t think 51.9% is exactly an overwhelming groundswell for change, is it?

  Too many cooks in the kitchen. Escaping the EU was never going to be easy. The notion that a referendum decision would magically release the UK form Euro claws belongs in the minds of political aspirants.
  
  Minimum disturbance has to be the requirement: who would tolerate the civil and commercial chaos otherwise? Travel, employment, banking, access to goods and services all immediately disrupted pending re-instatement of future new relations. That doesn’t include matters of external relations like fishing rights or Ireland with a presently borderless UK territory.
  It may take 2o years to regain the independence sought. A continuing state of ongoing hard negotiations on individual aspects is to be expected.

I have noticed a trend in the media recently. They offer up an “edge-case” (where the system seems to have let someone down) and propose that this is indicative of the system’s failure as a whole. They tend to use first names only which avoids any checks on the veracity of their claims.
What I miss is the use of proper, meaningful statistics in reporting. A great one from a few years ago; the number of teenage mothers has halved over the last (5 I think) years. Why can’t we see media reporting trends in identifiable metrics, rather than pushing human interest stories?

I refused to adopt the Law Society’s “gender equality” charter in my firm, and will refuse to have more rules and regulations imposed upon my business trying to solve a problem that does not exist in my practice.

Tarring me with the same brush as drunk gropers in large law firms won’t wash with me. I trust the likes of Kathryn Beck take note.

I actually don’t have Kiwisaver. The reason is silly, it’s because it was a Labour policy brought in by my pet Cunt Cullen. But I also didn’t like the idea of not being able to get the money out early if needed. One thing I don’t like about Kiwisaver is the lack of warning that you could actually lose on it..

I figured I’d rather put more money into repaying the mortgage than save in kiwisaver, even though I didn’t get the contribution. I don’t know it that is sound economic thinking. Opinions are welcome.

      Under age 50 you may have better ways to deploy your capital. Like boosting your personal business or reducing your mortgage.
      At 50 you should be looking to your retirement and that brings Kiwisaver into focus.
      At 55 the $520 top up per year makes Kiwisaver a no brainer.
      The above is for the self employed. As a wage or salary worker you should be in from the start, as the employer subsidy, and the $520 top up, make it very good.

  It’s one of the few Labour policies that actually benefits people with jobs. Salary levels have already priced in the extra cost to employers and the government contribution is just a way to get some of your own money back. So I don’t agree with staying out of it on moral grounds.
  
  Financially, it is obviously worth it to contribute the minimum to get the matching contributions, unless you are starting very young.
  
  Since I got out of property, I buy shares instead of paying back the mortgage. Obviously they could lose a chunk of value at any time but historically shares have done a lot better than what the mortgage rate is now. It also feels good to be funding the productive sector of the economy not the property market.

    They are under strong pressure to make more money for the Managers. Like the Managers persuaded Cullen of the whole thing in the beginning.
    I would not touch it with a bargepole – a similar scheme by a now Australian lead Manager, before Kiwisaver, cost me well over six figures of my personal superannuation in 2001.

  The purpose of the role was to be wheeled out at events where the govt would give away money to their mates for *insert bullshit justification here*, get Cindy’s pic in the paper without attracting any hard questions, and keep her ego fed. As such any diversity tickboxing and politically compliant monkey would have done. But they fucked up the hiring process with their corrupt shenanigans so completely that it would only have ever bought up the embarrassment again to actually go ahead and hire someone.   Always pays to read the source material…So, it was just a reduction in damages based on what National theoretically would be have paid, rather than the nominal base fee that would other wise have been used. Another private equity investor failure: an Auckland iron caster in receivership, putting 200 jobs on the line. (Link below).

This should be a warning to investors on the potential fate of Stuff after the merger of its Australian owner, the 177-year-old Fairfax Media, with Nine Entertainment Company.

It seems likely the merged group will look to flog off Stuff.

Not a lot of investors will be interested, but you might see a private equity firm pop up with an offer.

Investors need to be wary if this happens, because sometimes subsequent investors suffer.

You load the target company up with debt, hype it to hell in the media, then float it on the stock exchange, recovering what you paid for the company plus your profit.

You’ve made enough money to not care about the crash of the debt-laden target company, battering the new, listed company’s sharemarket investors.

An Australian private equity firm’s float of Feltex, once a successful carpet maker processing NZ wool, was an example.

Sharemarket investors were burned, and where the factory stood in Christchurch making woollen carpets, many for export, and employing probably hundreds of locals, now stands a supermarket.

    It’s so odd. We have two official languages (apart from signing). When speaking English, it’s “New Zealand”, when speaking Maori, it’s “Aotearoa”.
    
    But the PC mob want as well to Maorify English as spoken in NZ into a pidgin language, with non-English letters and non-English name versions.
    
    Saving Maori as a spoken everyday tongue, a small language in a remote corner of the world is a nigh-impossible job.
    
    Resources are being thrown at it. New Zealand is hundreds of millions of dollars a year trying to keep the Maori language alive. There’s a State strategy, an unofficial push by the leftist teaching profession to make Maori compulsory in schools, and agencies and programmes devoted to the campaign.
    
    Sadly, at best Maori will ever be only a ceremonial language.

        “No worries” is Aussie English. There is no such thing as Maori English. “Gumboots” comes from the English-speaking United States. “Television” has been coined in English from Greek and Latin roots, just as many Maori words likely come ultimately from roots in some Taiwan tribe. “Kindergarten” comes from a sister Germanic language of English. “Cartoon” comes into English from similar words in the fellow European languages, French and Italian.
        
        The point is these words were assimilated into the English language to fill gaps, not mandated into it by a PC group with political or pseudo-political goals. Some Maori words have been assimilated into world English, such as “haka” and “tiki” but not a helluva lot.
        
        The Maorification PC mob, on the other hand, want to substitute English words in usage with Maori words. These won’t be adopted into the vast English-language community, and, along with Maori-language diacritical marks, serve only to bastardise the English used in New Zealand.

Does anyone know for sure if they at anytime presented as an item? This is not muckraking but about her honesty. If the were an item for some time but remanded friends her answer would be misleading at best.

There is also the matter of the mobile where Wayne Mapp was trying excuses for her.

There is no way any MP would give the mobile number to casual acquaintances. If they did there number would get around and they would be bombarded with abusive calls and texts.

      I also believe in democracy. Personal attacks on people who did not vote for the party you thought they should or lobbied for another party are undemocratic.
      
      When those attacks are anonymously they are much worse.
      
      You choose not to use your name and I respect that. However, when others choose not to use their name and engage in name calling be it to me or MPs I say it is cowardly.
      
      I would like to see one insult Ardern when she was talking to the Minister of Police.

        Longknives, There are many on KB who refer to Maori as Murri and use other terms. It is sad that many people born in NZ denigrate Maori and worse that many who have immigrated here do so as well.
        
        I know of some who make the mistake of doing so to those of Maori ancestry who do not appear to be Maori. They soon shut up when challenges to the anonymous bloggers here would.

Swifty

Just checking in from Auckland Hospital’s Coronary Care Unit. Had a bit of a heart attack yesterday arvo and been here since then. Had a stent fitted as soon as I got here and its been a pretty uneventful 24 hours since. Will be here until Thurs or so and then a couple of very quiet weeks parked up at the house. Have received the highest standard of professionalism and care from all the people I’ve seen here.

    This is how Melissa Lee gazumped Cullen. When Bennett and Bridges are asking questions of the PM regarding Shroubek, they are doing so in expectation of an answer. They will, eventually, catch the PM in a lie. They did with Curran, they have done so with Jones. ILG and Ardern are next.

The parents of a baby whose body washed up on a Gold Coast beach believed the girl could be “the devil” and was “evil”, according to court documents obtained by the ABC.

In one diary entry, the mother allegedly referred to the baby as “the one you call the devil”. “Thout [sic] shall not murder is his command but [the baby’s father] is the law himself, he is the word and son of god. He has the right to sleigh [sic] the wicked one for all nations’ sake,” the diary read, according to the court documents.

The documents also reveal the child’s mother “became withdrawn from her family” in her late teenage years, becoming “heavily influenced by religion and told people that she believed she was Mary, the mother of Jesus“.

Hopefully Scott can join us and explain how someone decides if they’re the son of God or the mother of Jesus. In the meantime, from where I sit, this is a tragic waste of life. The baby never had a chance.

Court rules against Gaza father of 3 girls killed by IDF

An Israeli court yesterday ruled against a Palestinian from Gaza whose three daughters were killed by the Israeli army during its 2008 war on the Strip, denying Israel’s responsibility for their deaths.

Izzeldin Abuelaish, a 63-year-old doctor from Jabalia in the north of the Gaza Strip, lost three daughters and a niece during Israel’s 2008-2009 war on the besieged enclave. His story was made famous after he discovered his children had been killed while speaking to an Israeli TV channel, with his suffering broadcast live across the country and later shared widely around the world. Yet Israel’s Beersheba District Court yesterday ruled that Israel bore no responsibility for the deaths of the four girls, instead blaming “terror groups [for] fighting from within a civilian population and storing weapons in the building where they died,” the Times of Israel reported.

Israeli Justice Shlomo Friedlander said in yesterday’s ruling that Israeli shells hit Abuelaish’s home because “figures on the roof were suspected of acting as lookouts for terror groups and directing fire at IDF forces”.

Abuelaish’s lawsuit claimed that there was no fighting in the area at the time of the attack on his home, meaning there was no military rationale for it being targeted. His legal team claimed Israel’s shelling was, therefore, a war crime.

Abuelaish’s daughters – 13-year-old Bessan, 15-year-old Mayar, and 20-year-old Aya – as well as his 14-year-old niece Noor, were among 1,390 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces during Israel’s 22-day war, dubbed “Operation Cast Lead”. Israeli human rights organization B’Tselem estimates that more than half of those killed were civilians.
