  Kiwiblog does get the Labour Party spinners up early in the morning to downtick any comment which makes good practical sense.
  
  There seems to be a team of at least three. I bet they are salaried staff on taxpayer’s money 🙁
  
  Without Kiwiblog I guess these folk would sleep in until midday. Their heads would explode if they ever discover ‘You Stupid Boy’ blog 🙂

  Strangely, “LGBT Pride”, “Gay Pride”, and other such versions of pride are considered perfectly valid, but the phrase “Straight Pride” is seen as being as provocative as a MAGA cap.
  
  I say “strangely” because one of the people who was first responsible for popularising the word “pride” in the context, gay activist L. Craig Schoonmaker, back in the early seventies, is reported as saying:
  
  “We were going to create a number of events the same weekend as the march to bring in people out of town, and wanted to unite the events under a label. [The] first thought was ‘Gay Power,'” Schoonmaker told The Allusionist podcast in 2015. “I didn’t like that, so [I] proposed ‘gay pride.’ There’s very little chance for people in the world to have power. People did not have power then; even now, we only have some. But anyone can have pride in themselves, and that would make them happier as people, and produce the movement likely to produce change.”

  See that? One of the inventors of the phrase “gay pride” said that ANYONE can have pride in themselves. Not just gays. Not just lesbians. ANYONE.
  
  But, of course, as so often happens, the word and its usage have been hijacked. Now, it appears the word “pride” is only allowed to be used in certain contexts that have the approval of the self-appointed guardians of this word.
  
  Maybe Marama Davidson had the right idea after all. How about we try reclaiming the word “pride” to mean what it’s supposed to?

    The problem with everyone having “pride”, is that people these days take pride in doing shameful things. They have lost the ability to recognize the difference between the scared and profane and think that just because they desire something that it must be right to take pride in doing so. The ability to humble yourself and to be cognizant of right and wrong (and admit when you are wrong) is just as important as having a misplaced pride.

    It can have positive connotations….as in taking pride in your work…
    
    but it is loaded with “negativity” if you’ve read the Bible…

    But more to the point, with the new law on abortion, we can be in a situation of mourning the death of baby at 30+ weeks of gestation and being indifferent to the deliberate killing of another baby at exactly the same stage.

      Why do you say women are “indifferent” to having a termination, whatever the duration of the pregnancy? I know women who have done so on medical advice because of serious medical issues and I don’t remember any of them being anything other than profoundly sad at what happened.

I am getting a really bad feeling about the new Leader of the Opposition. He reminds me of David Shearer.

Before the pandemic, Simon Bridges was all over this Government and it showed in the polls. I was cautiously optimistic that he could win the election. Now Labour has the prospect of winning an outright majority. They will keep the fire hose of money going until September. Then when they win they will set out to implement a full on socialist agenda to transform the country.

  Bridges wasn’t perfect but havn’t seen anything from Mr Muller yet that would inspire me to vote for his party – or that he is in any way more electable or competent than Bridges.
  I will be voting for a different party this time unless I see some worthwhile progress from National.

        Twenty years ago I went to a “retreat” up at Kaukapakapa near where DG lives. There were heaps of hot young things walking around with very little on. We stayed in Teepee’s, ate vegetarian, and did sweat lodges. In the evening’s we gathered in a large teepee called a lodge and sang ridiculous songs while banging away on drums. It was supposed to be so cool. Unfortunately the three main rules were: no booze, no smokes including the green stuff and no humpty. I lasted till the evening of the second day of three, then snuck out and hitched a ride to the local pub and got smashed drinking rum and cokes with the locals.

    I am wondering it Todd (and his supporters) has misjudged his abilities to lead National into the forthcoming election. Perhaps Winston’s prediction of a few years ago will come to pass – that National would chew through two leaders before the next election.
    Gravel Road – if you are going to vote for a different party presumably it will be a vote for ACT.
    If normally National supporters are feeling disenchanted with National, they should still get out and vote for an anti-Labour/Green party such as ACT. Staying at home on election day effectively gives Labour half a vote.

      Yes, all disenchanted National voters should certainly turn to ACT. The one bright spot in the Roy Morgan poll a couple of days ago was that it had ACT on 3.5%. Let’s get them over the 5% line. It might not help much this time around, but having a strong ACT contingent in the next parliament would provide a crucial counter-narrative to Ardern’s bullshit and articulate an alternative to the socialist hell she’s steering us towards.

        Not sure if you’re referring to me and other ACT supporters Batman, but ACT are practical candidates. They will support a National government on confidence and supply at least, and stand to get several candidates into parliament at their present level of support.
        
        In fact, from a purely pragmatic perspective they allow National to capture more of the centre, as well as social conservatives, by holding the right economic flank and catering to social libertarians like me.
        
        If you’re just talking about the silliness of “sitting it out”, then I agree with you. Now isn’t the time for purity, it’s the time to send Ardern and her pack of economic vandals to oblivion or, if we can’t do that, at least preventing the left from enjoying a landslide victory.

        Blackface, voluntary euthanasia is a conscience issue. Is it because being its one MP, Seymour is ACT rather than being “of ACT” that you will make Seymour’s stand central to your vote?
        
        Like many other responsible sports shooting enthusiasts I will likely give my party vote to ACT because of Seymour’s principled stand for a measured review of firearms control (rather than Jacindarella’s hijab-flaunting, headline-grabbing declaration of seize and scrap). Also, because of Seymour’s work on legalising voluntary euthanasia, and because of ACT’s other policies.
        
        Do you think those of us who aren’t Catholics or who aren’t otherwise opposed to euthanasia should base our party and electorate voting on the fact that National’s Mullen is a loyal Catholic and would vote against our views in a conscience vote? Would that be rational?

        Re Firearms, I don’t own one myself, but would find it very hard not to support ACT on this point alone, if not for euthanasia.
        
        Other voters may do as they please, and decide who they can and cannot vote for based on how a particular policy from any party (or how a party has voted on any given issue) sits with that voters ethical framework and “bottom lines”… for me, that excludes parties that in part or whole promote or endorse abortion and/or euthanasia. Others are free to view things differently, but I like to sleep at night.

Or would have if he had not lost the election. Judith fans seem to thing that her low poll rankings don’t matter, while they screamed about Bridges’ poor showing.   Disagree with your last sentence. They won’t because deep down they know this will be as popular as cold sick to the middle. They will however keep bribing the middle and run the country into unsustainable debt that will result in stagflation and growing inequality. That is the irony of any Labour government – they create more inequality given any welfare increase is dwarfed by cost of living increases.

  I didn’t listen to RNZ this morning but read a comment that he did well this morning. Unfortunately, he has stepped into an extremely hostile media environment. A day into the job last week he was blasted by RNZ as being a white supremacist and a racist. I suspect there are many concerned citizens out there who don’t like the way Jacinda is promoting Maori nationalism and don’t like the way she is handling the economy.

      I’ve been to both Uganda and Australia. Uganda, oddly enough, being as it is in the very middle of Africa, was full of Australians running the local attractions. That included the ‘Raft the Nile’ excursion out of a town called Jinja. Anyway, I asked one of the Aussies WTF they were doing in Uganda, the answer? Anyone listening to Magic Talk Radio yesterday notice that before every news reading the announcers (MJ Tomasi/Geoff Bryant) started with a Maori greeting? Never heard this before. Wondering if this is a requirement of receiving $50m?

    I looked at an article the other day, and realised I didn’t know what it was saying. The only English words were verbs and conjunctions and there was no punctuation (not that that mattered).
    I don’t mind if people want to talk/read Maori, but my first language is English and I think I’m one of a majority here in New Zealand.

        We have two main spoken languages in NZ: English and Maori.
        
        There are 20 or more tribal Maori-language stations supported by the taxpayer, and there are Chinese and stations broadcasting in various Pacific Islands languages.
        
        In the other stations, a New Zealand Pidgin is being promoted in place of English, the world’s leading language in business, academia, science, diplomacy, tourism, and popular culture.
        
        They can’t force us to speak Maori so they are trying to trap us into a Maori-English pidgin.
        
        If they want to be truly bicultural they would broadcast in both English and Maori on separate frequencies and channels.
        
        They know too few will ever follow in Maori, so they are trying to root our English. What to do with their NZ Pidgin?
        
        To use another patois: Dem cya stuff it up dem arse.

        Those Maori stations are small regional ones.
        
        Separate channels and frequencies would be the radio equivalent of language apartheid. Not the mention it would be entirely unhelpful for anyone trying to learn a few words of a different language… Oh and it would be massively expensive for taxpayers. A price you’re willing to pay to feel comfortable with your English only station? Yikes, that’s not very right wing of you.

        Batman, first point- compared with say, newspapers or magazines, radio stations are relatively cheap to set up in production equipment, and frequencies are cheap or free (to community stations etc). For Maori language, frequencies could be supplied from the part of the spectrum Maori claimed under the Treaty of Waitangi.
        
        Second point. It is English language stations that are being eroded by the lapse into NZ Pidgin. Let them just broadcast in straight English. No new expensive system, just have them in English rather than in NZ Pidgin.
        
        However, for full dual language broadcasting, sites, offices, transmission equipment could be shared between English and Maori services. Maori-language positions could provide jobs for a few of the hundreds, or even thousands of young folk graduating from wananga — the Maori tertiary institutions — with Maori cultural degrees.
        
        If it all was still was too expensive, the alternate path would be to scrap State broadcasting altogether, apart, perhaps for broadcasts to the Pacific Islands for diplomatic propaganda purposes, and perhaps present radio and TV Parliamentary channels. These could be contracted out.
        
        Without advertising-free competition from the State, commercial broadcasters would find, and find economically, what listeners wanted to hear: be it English language, Maori language, or even NZ Pidgin.

What is with the undignified China and WHO and UN and UN Helen Clark and the similar past labour people of her ilk? They seem to have faux “foundations” or snouts in some sort of a public trough and they never seems to go away. Never seen one go on to proper service in the private enterprise.

Geoffrey Palmer, Tony Blair, his wife, Clark’s husband (on DHB board), Irish Mary Robinson, Julia Gillard, the Clintons, Barack Obama etc etc. I have greater respect for people like Mike Moore who went on to work for international trade only because of his expertise and passion.

Watching TV3 6pm news last night. There was a bit about the protests where the journalist was talking to the guy Mendez (?) who I thought was a Green Party (list?) MP, but they had him as some sort of Advocate??? Is this the media failing to point out that a Green Party MP was at the protest where there was NO social distancing? Maybe I got the wrong end of the stick?

      Who says we weren’t satisfied with a Govt. that was the envy of the world, a Govt that managed a $20Bn earthquake and a GFC?
      
      Our forebears of the 19 c. were determined to build a nation without workhouses. What emerged has served us well. They did not envisage communism but a healthy free society. Tax may provide some income re-distribution but so did families. Now with everyone free to travel and resettle where they will our modest social security allows that freedom and aged parents etc are provided for. Some tax is social insurance.
      
      Act rightly watch over taxpayers interests. There is only one cake and the providers should get well rewarded too.

  It’s not really a power subsidy. It’s a benefit increase.
  
  Of course it sounds better to call it a ‘winter power payment’ than to say ‘we’re only increasing the payment during winter because we think you’re too useless to budget properly’.
  
  Also, the cancellation of National’s tax cuts was effectively a pension cut as well. The winter payment just barely offsets that so is not really an increase at all.

I am no fan of corporate welfare. I detest it. As a rule, NZ families should not be required by politicians whim to prop up companies and especially those from offshore.

Having said that, I do take issue with this from Thomas Coughlan:

Movie production companies have a choice of where they make their films. Rightly or wrongly, the last few decades have seen countries competing with each other to attract movie company business. They see the benefits of increased economic activity, increased taxation, job and skill creation and the films being advertisements to the wider world for the country concerned as all being desirable to chase; up to a point.

So rebates have come in (not strictly subsidies as Thomas keeps repeating) – whereby governments give back to production companies a proportion of their total spend within a country. I hear that our current rebate is about 15% (could be wrong) for spend above a certain minimum – i.e. for a $100 million spend, the government gives back $15 million.

The argument is that without the rebate the work would not come to these shores and other countries would enjoy the benefits of the movies being made there, not here.

Thomas says that this ‘subsidy’ would be better used to fund local productions or other arts programmes overlooking the main point that without the foreign companies making their films here there would be no money to ‘distribute’.

Indeed, if foreign films weren’t being made here then we’d be a billion or two down, annually, in economic activity with hundreds of jobs foregone, hundreds of millions down annually in GST, company and personal tax and nothing whatsoever to give to local productions other than that which is funded from general taxation.

It seems to me that Thomas’ article is a mess and he has overlooked these fundamental points.

  The film industry is not so unique that it require special subsidies and exemption from normal labour laws. Plenty of industries could make a similar case that favourable treatment would attract business to New Zealand.
  I don’t agree that the government’s role is to decide which industries are so special that they need this kind of helping hand.

    The film industry is not unique in an economic sense. All of us are over-taxed and all sorts of locally driven productive activity is not happening because taxes and regulations make it not worthwhile.
    
    The way in which the film industry is different is that the gain or loss to the economy is much easier to see because the film gets made regardless, either here or somewhere else.
    
    Yes it is illogical to have subsidies for films only. But it is not an improvement to have films subjected to the same heavy disincentives as everyone else. Consistency, hobgoblins, Emerson etc.

  The Left don’t understand the concept of cost benefit analysis. Some of these productions aren’t worth the money it costs us but most are. The benefits far outweigh the costs.
  
  It is also standard industry practice. Other countries also do it so we simply won’t get the productions and miss out on billions if we don’t do it.
  
  I don’t like corporate welfare. It leads to weakness in business and picking winners etc. The issue here is that the welfare already exists and either we do it and we get the benefits or we don’t and the entire industry dries up.

Nick Smith had Jenny Salesa like a possum in the headlights in QT yesterday. She was completely unable to explain why a big American Samoa based fishing ship was unable to come to Nelson for its routine maintenance when it and its crew hadn’t been anywhere near a Covid19 infection since whenever. Now it looks like that valuable work will go to Hawaii or somewhere else.
What’s different about this and the Avatar workers who came straight from the worst-infected place on earth (at our expense I might add)?
Oh, I think I know.
Avatar is happening in Miramar, part of the complacent Labour-held Rongotai seat, whereas Nelson is a fiercely- defended National seat. The CoL obviously doesn’t need the votes of those disloyal rich pricks.

  As far as I’m aware the 50+ film crew paid for their own flight out here plus accommodation during quarantine.
  They are monitored in quarantine by whatever branch of our public service is responsible for such things.

      I’m not very trusting of what’s been shown so far. The video may have been just cobbled together from a few stills. I have seen nothing on TV showing any footage purporting to be from the other viewpoint. The image of a partly open door and a narrative about action in the car is nonsense in Court.
      The Official ME has found fentanyl intoxication and meths and no evidence of asphyxiation.
      
      Police frequently have to be physically robust with people who are intoxicated or otherwise resisting arrest. I’m sure all Police weed out the occasional recruit whose personality is too vigorous. It’s an occupational hazard–look what such types did to children in state care. Most law enforcement officers have high integrity and reject any bad ones among them.
      
      The media appear complicit in stoking the fires of dissent and possibly without truth. They have fuelled the imagination and the rioting.

  The inference Judge Norman Davis draws after the declaration of a national state of disaster was that little or no regard was given to the extent of the impact of individual regulations on the Constitutional rights of people and whether the extent of the limitation of their rights was justifiable or not.
  
  This is according to his judgment on Tuesday, in which he declared lockdown Levels 4 and 3 unconstitutional and invalid.
  
  “The starting point was not ‘how can we as government limit Constitutional rights in the least possible fashion whilst still protecting the inhabitants of SA?’, but rather ‘we will seek to achieve our goal by whatever means, irrespective of the costs and we will determine, albeit incrementally, which Constitutional rights you as the people of South Africa may exercise’,” he said.
  
  Davis, in his judgement, slammed a number of the regulations, saying besides the specific ones cited, “there are many more instances of sheer irrationality included therein”.

These people don’t understand how to play the game. They need to do the following;

1. Demand special tax treatment when they are here.
2. Promise to throw wild parties where lines can be snorted of hookers breasts.
3. Say nice things about NZ and our PM.

Anecdotal evidence suggests if they do this we’ll let them in AND pay for their quarantine but it’s unclear if we’ll do this for people that are earning average incomes or if we only give this special treatment to people who earns millions for a few months work.

RNZ is running a 6-part series called “After the Virus” presented by Guyon Espiner. I caught the hour long episode on the “Environment” while driving in the car. I drove off the road a couple of times early in the piece.

All three panelists were not only ardent global warmists–they actually make a living solely out of the movement. Christiana Figueres, head of the UN climate change response that led to the Paris Agreement 2015, current head of the United Nations Development Programme Achim Steiner, and NZ’s own Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment Simon Upton.

If you want to see how one sided the global “discussion” is going to be — this is a good example. No balance and no alternate view points allowed. It sounded like a bunch of out of touch impractical people indulging in a circle jerk. That includes Espiner.

Figueras basically stated that the 2-3 month worldwide lockdown period affecting 99% of the world’s population negatively and with huge long term consequences, temporarily reduced the emissions only by 8%. No proof quoted. No doubt some scientists using their colonic “models” came out with that turd. She states that this proves we don’t even have the 10 years they were talking about to climate armageddon before the virus hit, she now thinks we only have “basically anywhere between three to 18 months because by the end of those 18 months all the decisions, and in fact most of the allocations of the recovery packages (Est. $20 T), will have been made”. She goes on to suggest that halving of emissions by 50% by 2030 as recommended by (Paris accord) scientists needs an annualised change of 7.6%—so we have to deal with the equivalent impact of a pandemic every year until 2030? To confuse us, she complicates the matter by listing a whole bunch of other emergencies at the same time and thinks we need to address all of those together while presenting ZERO ideas about how.

Figueres sounded like shill for big business, trying to funnel as much money out of the expected $20 Trillion worldwide virus recovery budget funded by the public to big businesses poised for the next phase of screwing the public. They will corner most of the money purporting to provide the world with a New Green Economy and New Green Jobs. Her modus operandi reminds me of that of that great conman Henry Paulson, the US Treasury Secretary, and his railroading of the emergency $800 billion stimulus bill during 2008 global economic crisis which mostly went to the big banks and financial institutions that re-badged themselves as banks. Joe public got some hush money—crumbs in the form of a stimulus check of some thousand dollars each.

It’s still around, last thing I heard, and could continue to make a big impact medically even in this country with the onset of winter and the complete inadequacy of our border controls. Economically we’ve barely seen the start of the effects, and yet these deluded little New Zealanders like Espiner are running around pretending it’s all over. From what I can see it is nothing more than pre-trade training courses with no guarantee of any job or apprenticeship at the end of it.

This is more about trying to hide unemployment numbers than anything else.

  What I struggle to understand is what trades do we need to train for. With dozens of engineers builders etc made redundant or likely to be so are we planning to train Builders in welding. Mechanical engineers in building seems a bit dumb to me. When we are allowed to get back to normal. those who were made redundant will largely go back to the trade they were skilled in ,be it hospitality,retail or the skilled trades.

The latest ruling from the tribunal allows to stay in the country a former Chinese soldier who came to NZ on a visitor’s visa and says he converted to Falun Gong.

“Five Eyes” might as well kick New Zealand out now. As well as a socialist Prime Minister, we have signalled to authoritarian states such as China that all they need to do to get Western cover for spies is to send them to NZ on visitor visas then get them into Falun Gong.

We aren’t the only Western democracy being undermined by the unelected Leftist elite. After the peace deal in Northern Ireland, Britain’s politics-playing Supreme Court has ruled it was illegal to intern IRA leader in the 1970s. This opens the door for former IRA detainees to sue Britain. It is despite the Northern Ireland peace deal, and parallels legal persecution of former British soldiers who served in Northern Ireland.

It follows the case of the ignominious British lawyer and law professor, Phil Shiner, being struck off the professional register for professional misconduct, including dishonesty. Shiner led the legal cases taken against British military veterans who served in Iraq.

  So, the tribunal rules that Falun Gong stipulates which adherent can settle in New Zealand. Until this, I always had sympathy for them. Now, I think they should bugger off to Tibet or some other place to practise their mumbo-jumbo and re-home recruits.

Countries have been selected as they are those we would largely consider reputable.
While it may not be a reliable indicator of total cases per countries, it may show those that have done a better job.
Again shows that there appears to be something that may lessen the toxicity in hotter countries.

On 24th February he was the $1.69 hot favourite for the presidency and Sleepy Joe was a $34 rough outsider. Now on 3rd June The Donald is out to $2.32 and The Sleepy One is a hot $2.00 favourite.
Trump makes politics interesting. I do not think Trump is the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I find him likeable, particularly as he sticks it fair and square up the chutneys of the main stream media. I also like how he puts lefty parasites into a paroxysm of despair. That is delightful to watch. So his demise as a politician is sad to see.

Then the interview was followed by criticism etc because Muller refused to announce them all immediately today. I have no issue with our media grilling MPs, but ffs compared to the way Ardern and co get interviewed, (when they actually are in a position to deliver it), National and Seymour get hammered.
