  I listened to a clip of Boris Johnson speaking the other day, and he didn’t sound the same. He clearly has some kind of lung damage and you can hear it in his voice. Presumably this is only a feature for the 10% who get really seriously ill, but it does make wonder what the long-term prognosis is for those cases.
  
  Has anybody else heard him before and after COVID? I would be interested to know what you think. Maybe I am imagining it!

Auckland Shitty Council heading to Administration. They need some adults in charge to make the hard decisions.

Unless there is massive immigration from the third world none of Auckland Shitty white elephant projects make sense. They don’t work regardless.

Some adults to close projects down and a planned system of asset sales to retire debt over a number of years. Otherwise the clowns in charge will panic and start selling assets for cents on the dollar.

I know that many people think that Donald Trump is going to lose the election in November. But I am not so sure? The jobs report for the month has the US economy adding 2.5 million jobs. This was an outstanding result and it may be that the United States is on a path for massive economic recovery. If so that will greatly help Trumps path to re-election.
But the other issue is his opponent. Joe Biden is not the unlikeable Hillary Clinton. However he is struggling to even speak in coherent sentences. This interview that I have linked to comes from The View, where he has a panel of doting women who totally want to see him succeed. And he cannot even answer their delicately phrased questions. Honestly – how do you think this guy is going to go in a debate against Trump? Because Trump will not hold back.

A sad day for New Zealand under an increasingly doctrinaire and divisive government. Racial profiling and preference is being implemented in the scheduling of surgical procedures by an increasing number of DHBs, obviously following a confidential government directive. When the policy first came to light a week ago Health Minister Clark batted it away as an “operational matter”. It is anything but. It is a matter of huge ethical and moral importance, and frankly the most evil policy introduced by any government in my lifetime. This kind of thinking will greatly aggravate race relations, but perhaps that’s what Jacinda wants in order to divide and rule? New Zealanders must protest this wickedness and throw this vile government on the dustheap of history where it belongs. Any word from Todd and Nikki on this or are Act left to do all the heavy lifting?

  They (Liberal lefties) realise that unless they keep minority groups dependent on them they will improve their lives into middle class and then vote National. Why don’t Maori just step up and compete. They have the skills, education and resources in their young people to make their own waves. How patronising and condescending for Labour to keep telling Maori they need privileges above the rest to have a fair go in life.

  How is a “Maori patient” defined? (I assume the same as for other institutions in this country, such as universities.)
  
  So, if you are 1/8th Maori, but have the documentation and registration with your iwi, you are “Maori” and eligible for special treatment.
  
  This is an injustice. You should be receiving medical treatment based on your need; not on your racial classification.

    If you are one 32nd Ngai Tahu you might qualify for Maori priority entry to Medical School. That is, if one of your 32 great-great-great grandparents was a South Island Maori.
    
    Because whalers and sealers began settling and intermarrying with Maori in the far south of NZ from about 1820 (200 years ago) that’s feasible. We’ve had a recent head of the tribe who was blue-eyed and fair-haired.
    
    The high rate of intermarriage between white and Maori in NZ since the beginning (and long may it continue) means our biracial structure differs from that in most “white settler” countries.
    
    Many who pronounce on race issues in New Zealand are Indian, Middle Easterners, and now even black Africans. I say “black Africans” because these folk are well outnumbered in NZ by white folk from South Africa. If NZ Chinese have views on the country’s race relations, you seldom hear them – apart, naturally, from the race relations head honcho, Meng Foon.

    Triage is not a trinket to entice natives into the hospital system, it’s a hospital system used primarily as best health practise so all people get best health practise. Witch doctors probably use the same system.
    
    It simply overloads the health system as it becomes over busy with untimely and unneeded consultations leading to confusion and disruptions within the health system.

    Every time you get a prescription the Doctor signs your ethnicity (top right hand site).
    Otherwise say in any medical requirements you will be asked by say nurse so she can put on form.
    You may be asked if you are a NZ Citizen – for payment purpose.
    After over 50 years as a Citizen I have been asked a few times – because I speak proper English.
    Even have had to send copy of Passport details for Hospital records.

  I used to support the push for equality (gender and racial) untill several years ago it started to become clear that those tribal groups didnt actually want equality but infact want speacial privilidges, lately this is more so of the alphabet groups but has been extremely obvious in maori activists for decades.

Everyone I have dealings with live life at level 0. Even all the shops I go into don’t make you sign “the register”, it’s there, most people ignore it. The virus is gone until the Government allows it to be imported again. Film makers etc could bring it in.

  Two of my kids had their first soccer games of the season this weekend.
  We were sent letters last week telling us to come an hour earlier and that we all would have to scan the QR code and sign in, and that we would not be allowed to stand alongside the field etc. Only one parent should attend etc.
  No QR code, no signing in, and everyone was carrying on as per normal.

Having been out and about on the weekend I was reminded that, despite Ardern’s apparent popularity, Kiwis do their own thing anyway. We are already at Level 1. Hugs, walking in groups, shopping without ‘logging in’ were commonplace.
I did notice some (very few) disapproving looks, invariably from middle aged matrons. Everyone else was back to normal.
Reminded me of John Key’s Flag episode. No matter how popular the PM, and how worthy the cause, Kiwis like to take the opportunity to assert their freedoms and give a fingered salute to those who seek to manage us.

  One thing I am still noticing, almost always from middle-aged sheilas, is fear.
  
  Whenever they are faced with a situation where they may have to get within six feet of strangers they look terrified.
  
  Given that there is no Covid-19 in the South Island, virtually none in NZ, I can only attribute this abject fear to the CoL’s obviously successful attempts to cower the population.
  
  NZ has never faced evil like this before.

Unlike many things that are imported into NZ, these are things that can and should be done in nz. But alas that is why some countries understand this and are even bringing jobs back into their countries while nz continues to export jobs overseas. Tell me Mcos, when so many people are losing their jobs, and the country is broke why you would prefer the jobs and money do not remain in country.
      
      Personally I’m still eating grapes off my grapevines, but alas, a stupid person would compare products nz doesn’t make like iPads with infrastructure work that can keep hundreds in job, keep the money local and see a lot go back into the govt accounts. The recently purchased newspaper Dominion Post and the new owner seem to know nothing about business and improving the imagine of their daily Paper better known as Stuff .
One would think they must try harder doubly harder to get their newspaper sales up . Yet they seem to have learnt nothing and the reason why their forebears bit the dust .
Take the Capital City Wellington visibility struggling for improved traction for Businesses and its Citizens in desperate need of some type of good news and positive stimulation. Like “Absolutely Positively Wellington”.Seems not to be.
Wonder who allowed the dumbo reporter and their negative story about a Nightshelter.Also a photo of a City Councillor from the worst Council in NZ infested with Labour/Green wannabes bleating about the state of the shelter.
Never mind the Night Shelter needing help, how about the City of Wellingtons Council doing something positive about improving some of the services which the City desperately needs ,instead of every time the new Mayor Andy Foster proposes improvement, his ideas get vetoed by the self imposed hurty feelings of most of that council because their out of control Mayor Justin Lester dumped by Wellington Ratepayers.
Yet one of the main antagonists against the Mayors’ ideas maybe even the enemy within Fleur Fitzsimons virtually leads the charge against his positive vision, has the gall to bleat and complain about a Night Shelter.
As for the Dominion Post alias Stuff if they want to progress beyond going into receivership they should get real and help make “Wellington City Great Again” . Stories on Nightshelters and negative Councillors FFS.

  The ship provides no risk at all. It is based in American Samoa, where there are no cases of Coronavirus. None of the crew has the virus, and there is no risk whatsoever of any crew member catching it once they put out to sea.
  
  Instead, the Government’s response is to tell the company to get the repairs done in Hawaii, and a Nelson company will lose out on a multi-million dollar project, which will cost jobs. This obsessive attitude to border control is a major stumbling block to any economic recovery.

    At the present time I’m on a fishing boat off South Georgia, the last time the crew were ashore was 20th March in Lyttelton. I’m the only nz passport holder and the ship is registered in Jamestown, we are due back in NZ in 10 weeks for the summer Antarctic season all 4 company ships. If we are not allowed in we will go elsewhere and I suspect they will cross NZ off there yearly maintenance and storing port of call which involves several months alongside and it will cost firms in Nelson and Lyttelton millions. This government is so shortsighted even specsavers couldn’t help them.

        One of my old mate’s brothers became a cop – and we stopped for a quick chat in Courtenay Place some years back on a Sat night – him in uniform. If he was under orders to clear the street and I was there I’d know it wasn’t the right time to talk – obviously. Context. I’m assuming you are being willfully ignorant?

    Yes it is easy to see that the protester crossed the line by standing in the way of a line of riot police.
    That’s right – he can’t talk to them.
    They are there to enforce a curfew – not talk with protesters.
    What makes you think a protester has got the right to talk to police clearing the street – of protesters?
    The police used reasonable force to move him back and he fell over.
    Anyone who watches the video very very closely and then frame by frame can see the protester take a faster step back as they move forward – he starts his own momentum – nothing they do adds force or pushes him off balance. He pushes off his left foot and steps backs right while trying to retreat as they stretch out their arms and start moving forward.
    From the moment he steps back quickly right foot he’s at the same speed before and after their arms stretch out to him. Whatever they did – did nothing to him.
    Open your eyes and your brain.
    I think he could’ve regained his balance but wanted to try and make it look like the cops pushed him down.
    If so – his injury is his own fault.
    If he was a genuine law-abiding peaceful protester I doubt he would’ve been injured.
    Don’t let the facts get in the way of a good story.

  What they said was something like, ‘yesterday, news media around the world, including Newshub, ran an INCORRECT story linking President Trump’s comments about job numbers and what he said about George Floyd.’ And on they went. No actual apology. No attempt to say sorry – to us, or Trump – and not even a quick ‘we regret the error’ or similar.
  A bit like a BLM protester saying, ‘Hey, guys, a lot of folks threw bricks through your window, and so did I – so what? Nothing to see here, move right along.’
  BTW, Stuffed had a major spew about the same false ‘job numbers/George Floyd’ story. Maybe let me know if you see their apology sometime before they go out of business.

We’ve heard a lot about job losses and business failures in recent weeks. But the ones we tend to hear about are large businesses, like Fletchers, Air Nz etc. So here’s the kind of story that will be repeated all over New Zealand, this week, especially, when the first wage subsidy runs out.

Derek is a trained chef. Like most in the industry, he went offshore for experience, and after a while, spent several years working as a chef on superyachts of the rich and famous. But he always planned to come back to New Zealand, which he did about six years ago.

He and his father spent a month travelling around the country, looking for a suitable place to set up a gourmet burger restaurant. Eventually they found a building in Ohakune which they renovated, where they installed a massive open grill, and where Derek opened his restaurant/cocktail lounge around five years ago. It quickly became a big hit, with its great food, fine refreshments and cosy, fun atmosphere. Visitors to Ohakune loved it. In 2018, he won the Supreme Award at Whanganui Chamber of Commerce’s Regional Business Awards.

So Derek branched out and last year set up a second restaurant right in the heart of Rotorua. That too was a big success; until March that is, when the tourists stopped coming, and the locals were locked down.

Yesterday, he made the announcement that the Rotorua restaurant would not reopen. In his message to customers he said “As times change, so must we in these unprecedented times”. He will focus on the Ohakune restaurant. Unfortunately, that will see a number of Rotorua people out of work, and his investment of time and money in setting up a new venture will be lost. His father project-managed both projects, but sadly took ill not long after Rotorua was finished, and passed away in October last year.

Even keeping Ohakune open will be a challenge. The town and the Central North Island in general faces challenging times. A good ski season on Mt Ruapehu calls for good snow, and good staff. The snow has started, but many skifield staff follow the winter, and come from overseas. Right now, they can’t get into New Zealand. For a town semi-dependent on the ski season for its prosperity, that’s not good news.

There are hundreds of Dereks all around New Zealand, employing thousands of people in small enterprises. Spare a thought for them when you hear the Prime Minister reassure us that the economy has largely bounced back, because you can be sure she hasn’t talked to them.

  What’s worse, not just people like Derek, who is still in the riskiest phase of his business (and power to him) the first year/ few years.
  There are people who are experienced, fought hard to build their business over the past 5-10yrs and because of the incompetent reaction of a govt. to a virus, have lost everything…..Business, income, house etc. Just when they may look forward to better times.
  PS They were having difficulty against this govt.’s actions BEFORE Covid19…why do they think, business confidence was in the toilet?

    Ohakune is a service village for the Mt Ruapehu skifields – mainly Turoa. Lots of people on the skifields came from offshore and we all know about Rotorua, where closing the borders dealt a serious blow. Derek is/was in the tourism business.
    
    Anyone who thinks Rotorua/Queenstown can survive in their current forms without foreign tourists is deluded.
    
    The mood I gather from KB is that closing the borders is/was the right thing to do except it should have been done sooner. Which would have dealt to tourism and foreign students even sooner.
    
    Derek was closed during lockdown and had no customers. If he had not been closed by lockdown he would have been open with practically no customers. The end result would not have been greatly different.
    
    $20 billion of income vanished from the NZ economy when the borders closed. It is what it is. Go figure.

        The economy definitely took a hit and there are any number of KB posters estimating horrendous costs per life saved etc.
        
        So in the upcoming election, I expect to see a campaign plank (from someone) something like
        
        “If Covid shows up again we will do a Sweden and let it rip. Hairdressers and butchers will stay in business. Too bad about Air NZ. Too bad about the tourist industry. Anyway – based on the Swedish experience – there shouldn’t be more than 3 or 4 thousand deaths – mainly oldies who are going to die soon and should lock themselves up anyway. ”
        
        Might as well open the borders for Pacific seasonal workers and Filipino dairy farm workers and lots of other useful people. Aussie skiers even ….

  Now civil servants have a taste for working from home, and government can afford to only have 50% of workers onsite at any time, Wellington hospitality is in for a massive shake up.
  It really is built on lattes and lunches.

        His criminality is irrelevant to the alleged crime committed against him. It is however relevant to the propaganda being used, suggesting he was a good person.
        The alleged crime speaks for itself. Why do people so often undermine their arguments with clearly false claims? He was a very bad person. As you say, that’s irrelevant to the case, so why are they pretending he wasn’t?

It isnt cowered by a totalitarian regime. Its leadership is strong.

I remember when

In a number of recent RMA articles bats have been mentioned as a possible reason for alternatives to planned new highway routes.
As they can be very hard to detect this usually involves DOC staff, or trained volunteers, using electronic bat boxes to detect their high-frequency echolocation calls.
These investigations seem to be where highways will be through native forests or native forest remnants are close to planned routes.
No doubt sometimes just a delaying tactic to the granting of RMA consent.

      Very different, you are probably referring to Fruit bats. NZ bat species are very small and as far as we know (tricky to get an accurate population assessment) around only in small numbers and in danger of falling below the sustainable population level.
      
      NZ Bats also are unusual in that they are known to forage on the ground, at least in part to get nectar from ground growing native orchids. This makes them more vulnerable to predation by rats and feral cats.

      They are both small ..when full-grown about the size of a wax-eye … vulnerable to cats, rats and stoats.
      
      A female has just one pup/year… so most unlikely to get large populations unless there is good pest control.

I wish Swift’s mates and their mates could go home and sort this sort of stuff out with their kids like our parents used to. But the universal (not just brown) problem is, kids nowadays have lost all respect for parents, and their idols are local gangsters and their good-for-nothing attention seeking underemployed townie stirrers and activists like Willie Jackson, Pania Newton, Renae Maihi etc. Once this has gone on for a generation or two, the parents themselves are in no position to role model behaviour, and hence any demand of anything off their kids results in their derision of parents.

I lay the problem at the feet of various governments in different ways. Nanny state laws, dont-ask-who-the-father is benefits, youth benefits $, useless MSD case officers who act on false complaints (e.g. parental abuse) from sneaky kids etc.

I also lay the problem directly on the schooling system for teaching entitlement and rights before responsibilities and obligations. Blame the police for their soft duck handling of real issues like child killings and open gang activity. And the so called leaders — both the ones who object to child uplifts and the more sophisticated iwi governors who exploit their community to extract government largesse, sit along with their mates and rellies on the boards and extract as much money for themselves as they can without any trickle down.

When there are sane and clear voices like Alan Duff, Dr Lance O’Sullivan or Steve Elers with his recent NZ Herald opinions , they get drowned out and de-platformed by both brown and white apologists.

Has anyone recently read anything from Steve Elers ? His opinion columns seem to have disappeared.

I blame the media for this because they prefer victimisation and oppression narratives to sell news rather than get to the bottom of the truth. It seems that they operate on the principle that the questions that would reveal the truth can never be asked–a cause for lot of screaming at the TV talking heads in this household.

While I see heaps of examples of “the samoan guy who has worked hard to get a degree and scholarships etc.” and similar Maori folk, there is still a large number of the community that is unable to see these people as examples.

We are quick to call out that the broader Muslim public for being quiet, and demand they call out religious extremism in their community, why should the same expectation not apply to our achieving brown brethren? And this could apply equally to recalcitrants in all communities– Chinese, Indians, Europeans.

In the same breath, all of us who face these incidents should also be expected to condemn the truly racist and vile responders for their hate filled comments about some of the perpetrators. We need to openly and clearly admit to, and acknowledge, the problem to foster debate and change.

I believe we have reached this situation is because there is no platform for free speech — for alternate, saner, views to express themselves reasonably, confidently and safely. The current media are enablers of bad behaviour, throwing up excuses for every action and enabling condemnation of people for speaking out bravely

How widely was the recent full video of Northland MP Matt King being threatened while a cop was present disseminated in the media? Not much.

I do believe the biggest opportunity in NZ media at present is a non-left, non-woke media platform. I do believe this is the most essential need for discussion to start and change to occur.

Or better still I prefer non-partisan watchdogs.

Then there is also a need for groups like the collective in NZ who are monitoring alt-right groups and apparently provided information to the authorities that led to the arrest of the NZ soldier at Linton Army Camp. They should also be watching the actvities of crazy left-wing groups like Antifa.

      Based off my calculations middle class anger regarding job losses will peak at around the election. You have to wait for around 6-8 weeks before the realization hits that there isn’t a job around the corner or indeed you need to take a massive cut in your salary.
      
      While the first wave (tourism) has a long term future, the majority of losses that begin from now in corporate, professional services and big box retail are long term and structural. Coupled with our draconian employment laws once these jobs are gone there is almost no scope for these to be reinstated even into the medium term.

  It’s not just about the lay-offs.
  
  Continual trading largely lessons the length of a recession, compared to closures which largely extend them.
  
  As when a business actually closes down, or closes an outlet down, it’s one less business that will be around to employ people when the economy picks back up. Unless of course others rent the space — but that is largely around the time the economy does pick up; as rents generally don’t get lowered unless the mortgage repayments are lowered. Shops are unrentable in recessions.
  
  In other words — compared to previous recessions where people were largely just ‘layed-off’ — people this time will be unemployed longer as the economy will take longer to pick back up due to closures.

        I see no reason for them to add the “we are accelerating some changes that had already been planned” unless they mean it. If they had said “We are making changes based on our insights into changing shopping habits and the anticipated economic impacts caused by Covid-19”, I don’t see how that would affect their subsidies issue.
        It would interesting to know the situation regarding the stores they are closing – perhaps they have got bigger stores nearby that will absorb those customers quite easily.

  Much of the road repair/improvement work stopped at beginning of level 4 as was deemed non-essential. Some restarted at level 3 with some delays as workers couldn’t travel to site due to rules. Why are we all so fixated on level 1. We should have been there weeks ago. We need to find out the strategy Re borders opening. How can we decide whether to keep trying to survive if we have no useful information. My business is 80-90% international. How much money do I have to waste (As well as us all as taxpayers- subsidies) if the borders are going to be shut for 2 years. Information please Jacinda.

I always knew that Stalin was a paranoid sort of person, especially in the later years. However the documentary also mentioned the spies he had all over the world in positions that had access to all the Allied, Japanese and German troop movements. Such was his stubbornness though he refused to believe Hitler would break their Pact and invade Russia, right up to the actual invasion. Several Soviet spies hitherto had warned of an impending invasion but they were dispensed with as their information went against Stalin’s belief that Hitler would not do such a thing. In any case, after the war the Soviet spies who had provided him with vital post invasion information were either executed or jailed because they knew too well Stalin’s misguided trust of Hitler. I suppose we would call those spies ‘useful fools’. Of course after the fall of the Soviet Union many previously secret KGB files were uncovered and their influence was truly outstanding, reaching even NZ.
