  The irony is that all the lawyer can do is advise the client to go through with the Police procedures. A printed card with the driver’s rights should me handed to the driver (the content of the card being in a schedule in the Land Transport Act) should really suffice. If the driver is too drunk to understand it, that would be the driver’s problem.
  A way out of the problem would be for the Police to say ‘you are not being detained, Sir, but if you do not cooperate, your driving licence is immediately suspended and you will be charged with declining to give a test. You are free to go at any time’.
  The Act may need a bit of a tweak to make it clear that this procedure can be used. It is all about road safety, it is not a game of tiddlywinks.
  This issue came about because the Canadian courts gave a similar judgment and the NZ courts followed suit.
  It is almost as farcical as the America cop comedy show years ago where the cops had to immediately gag offenders to stop them immediately confessing. A judge was letting them off because they did not have a chance to see a lawyer who would advise them to ‘take the Fifth’.

  That is seriously a stupid decision by the judge or judges. I wouldn’t wish the appeals court judges getting killed by a drunk driver, but if it happened, I’d probably not shed a tear for them after that judgement.

  Kerr’s rights were breached. You have the right under the Bill of Rights to consult a lawyer.
  
  It was not the police officer’s fault but neither was it Kerr’s. It was the fault of the Justice Department PDLA system that didn’t employ rostered lawyers which would guarantee a lawyer was on hand to answer calls.
  
  It is correct that convictions like this are quashed since it makes the authorities at fault address the shortcomings in procedures. It is not for the person arrested or the police officer (in this case) to suffer consequences since they did what was required of them.
  
  To not quash Kerr’s conviction would be to allow a precedent where if a lawyer was not found for the arrested person the police could continue with their attempts to question and charge the person without that person having the opportunity to get legal advice. That is a violation of the NZ Bill of Rights, Sec. 23.

        I bought a lovely greenstone piece from a Maori bloke at the north end of Hokitika some years ago. He told me he was originally from Ngaruawahia, so I asked if he had to pay Ngai Tahu a royalty for what he pulled out of the Arahura River. His response was priceless;
        “I suppose so but those cnuts can go and stuffed.”
        I will make an effort to wear it in the future. It might help me get my snout in the taxpayers’ trough. That Tainui man was not dyslexic, it is just that I find the correct spelling to be contemptible.

  What does Helen know about economics to advocate for a UBI? We already have something close to a means tested version of that anyway. The present benefit system is well bedded in. No system is perfect but a de novo UBI would just be re-start on trying to get the equities allocated once again. It is much easier to remove our present system’s warts.

So Megan Woods hasn’t yet been able to find out how many people left quarantine without Covid-19 tests, but she’s had time to write to Michael Woodhouse demanding he reveal the source of the allegations about Homeless Guy.

Megan Woods is also Labour’s campaign director for the upcoming election. Isn’t that an interesting coincidence? She’s more motivated to besmirch the reputation of a political opponent than to answer a genuine question which could have major consequences for both our health and our economy.

  Of course they already know the answer but the public will not like it so its not being released. Apparently of 55 people released only 4 were tested (two on the day they were leaving so no result when they left!).
  Therefore estimate of the 2,159 people left quarantine between June 9th & 16th, 2,159*51/55 = approx 2,002 people not tested

  Call me american then. Durian STINKS. You are forbidden from carrying these fruit on the Singapore and Bangkok underground, and many hotels have special venting units in kitchens where durian is prepared. Oddly enough, it is quite tasty. I recommend durian pancakes…. just don’t be nearby when they’re being cooked!

      Eastern cuisine, especially Japanese, has a wider range of texture than Western food.
      One particular texture I have not encountered in New Zealand food is that of “slime.” Most Westerners will throw up their knives and forks in horror when faced with a slimey food (and then throw up).

  Durian tastes like a sweet, creamy custard, but the smell is utterly vile.
  
  In Hong Kong I lived in an apartment block. Coming home from work, I could accurately smell from 5 metres away through a steel door sealed with insulation strips when my wife had bought and eaten durian that day.

    In Japan and the West we have wine snobs, cigar snobs, music snobs.
    In Malaysia they have durian snobs. (I kid you not.)
    
    A fine durian is like a bottle of Champagne or a fine Montecristo No. 2. And costs about the same.
    
    Here in Glen Innes, Tai Ping sells frozen durian for about $29 a kg. Having experienced the real deal in Thailand at the end of the last century, I can attest to the smellyness and deliciousness of the noble, mace-like durian.
    
    The durian has the most delectable creamy white flesh and a rich, unique creme-de-la-creme flavor. The smell, on the other hand, is like that of rotting onions. (Don’t worry about it.)

    If anyone in Wellington is interested in trying it you can buy it, frozen, from Davis Food Products in Petone. They sell it imported from Vietnam.
    Definitely an acquired taste mind. Just getting near the fresh stuff requires a lot of willpower. I remember having some many years ago in Brunei. Just the once though.

  I know myself when I spent all day working on some alterations to my daughter’s house a few years ago the kgs fell away.
  However.
  Take a look at Tom Walsh, shot putter & builder. He is obese despite endless exercise.
  My wife’s father had two wives. All the kids of one are somewhat fleshy and all the kids of the other are as skinny as it’s possible to be. So was the father and he lived well into his eighties.

    When you say he is “obese” I assume you mean that he has a BMI above 30. Almost all the All Blacks are obese by that measure. It doesn’t necessarily mean that they have a high body fate percentage though. I suspect than Walsh is simply very heavily muscled rather than that he is unhealthily fat.

  As much as I can’t stand New Zealand First, the prospect of an outright Labour Government in three months is terrifying. There will be no handbrake, as dysfunctional as that is.
  
  I just can’t see any choice but leave New Zealand. It could have been a great country but I don’t see the damage as being reversible. Many of my expat colleagues are now making plans to leave. These are people who have made business and employed New Zealanders.

      The key to it Randomt is to take NZ superannuation out of the equation ie amass enough of a retirement stash that you can generate/draw down the income off your savings which would be the same as collecting Nz super. We are not yet at retirement age, but I’ve decided we are not staying in NZ long term just because of Nz super. Apparently Queensland houses are significantly cheaper than Nz property prices.

FFS. How many more of these stories will we see about the dreadful possibility that someone “famous” might lose their job?

Don’t get me wrong, I do feel for them, I really do. I am incredibly fortunate that I have never been made redundant in over 30 years, so I can only imagine what a horrible experience it must be. But hundreds of people lose thier jobs every week – what’s so special about John Campbell or Jenny-May Clarkson, that they get the electronic equivalent of column inches devoted to their plight?

  The only times I have ever seen “Breakfast TV” is inadvertently – like I sit down in an airport lounge and realise it is on a TV in front of me. Then I move.
  
  That Campbell character is such a communist loser. In countries like Taiwan and Singapore you just don’t get fools like that on TV. They do have morning news shows on TV but they give you serious news on business and markets.

  I am incredibly superficial – I admit it.
  Last Sunday evening I turned on the TV to watch Country Calendar. The programme was about a farm which was badly damaged by the kaikoura earthquake. I thought it would be about the damage to the land, and how it was being remedied, but no, it was a lifestyle type story, and not particularly well done at that. Production values looked more akin to mobile phone coverage than a professionally shot film.
  But the worst thing was the weather report in the commercial breaks. The poor reporter was wearing the most unattractive garment – it had an uneven hemline, and was just the wrong length to expose the knees. And she didn’t know how to stand in her high heels.
  There! I said I was superficial. And in this case, unrepentantly so.

      Thanks phronesis. Reading through that link it appears that the government have unilaterally given themselves powers to extend temporary visas and basically do whatever they want for the next twelve months.
      
      All at the cost of the NZ tax payer to subsidise all these people taking up restaurant and retail jobs in the main. Correct me if I’m wrong, anyone who knows where all these people are being employed.
      
      That’s potentially 350k more Labour voters if they just give the whole lot of them permanent residence.

The advent of having two people read every second news story is a recent thing that seems to have been picked up from America.

  Having been made redundant 4 times in my career, I would not wish it on anyone.
  However, after the first one, I was not caught out unprepared again and managed my way through the others a lot better.
  As far as TV presenters go, they work in an uncertain industry where advertisers and ratings are constantly changing and may influence continued employment.
  Salary packages and termination conditions are accordingly tailored to be quite generous to reflect that uncertainty.
  Campbell for one has bounced around the industry both at his own volition and of necessity before and must accept it as just “part of the job”, and as such won’t get any tears from me. I say that independently of my opinion of him as a broadcaster

Embarrassed for the past week for not doing her job and the lack of border testing, she:
1. Rolls out madam pink hairdo, to tell the world the testing regime is ok. Only for a Professor of Public Health Epidemiology to come out on RNZ to confirm that what National have been calling for is the correct approach;
2. Calls out Woodhouse over the homeless person and the hotel. Of course there will be no records to confirm the story. 1. Who would admit a stuff and keep a record of it; and 2. If there were records, they will have been “eliminated”.

If the story of the homeless person is true, an affidavit will be the only way to confirm any truth.

  This is a major systemic failure. The Minister of Health and the Director General are both directly responsible, but the ultimate responsibility rests with the Prime Minister.
  
  If the Prime Minister believed in accountability, David Clark would be gone as a Minister. That he remains, with so many gaffes on his record, is an insult to those of us who pay his salary. Yesterday he was either missing or held back from Question Time, yet he was able to front a media conference two hours later. Grant Robertson answered questions on Clark’s behalf, and his answers were unsurprisingly light on detail and evasive.

  Don’t believe those numbers of ‘only’ 55 people having been released on exemptions and not tested. That’s just pie in the sky stuff. And as prof Gorman of Auckland uni states, they might not be infectious NOW, but they might have been then.
  
  As well as that the yes minister types at MOH who formulated the border form for entry to NZ didn’t even ask people for their NIH number. This is a health crisis right? Must have been some career bureaucrats down in Wellington, sitting their pushing bits of paper round and answering emails who devised this mess.

    If I was asked for the number by someone at the immigration counter at the airport I wouldn’t be able to provide it.

    I commented to a young Maori lady (who has a dutch surname) that I mangle Maori words because it’s a language I didn’t encounter until in my late 20’s (so 13 years ago).
    And I mangle enough of my second language (I managed to pass Afrikaans at high school…and we’ll leave it at that), and even some of my first language (English) to worry too much about it.

      Raphael, I wouldn’t worry about it. Modern Maori or TeReo as it is now called is a made up language, with made up pronunciation. A classic example is Wanganui Maori do not pronounce the “wh” sound. Yet 20 plus years ago, the move to put the “h” in Wanganui gained traction. So, for the benefit of the Maori language police the city is now spelt Whanganui.
      Another reality of Maoridom, is that Maori were not a single homogeneous group with a single language. TeReo and it’s current form have evolved over the past 200 years, like much of what is “Maori Culture”.
      
      So, the next time you encounter the Maori culture/language tell them to turn around and tell them to teach their bros to speak and be Maori in conformity.

Is this a political ad?- Last night I was looking at my facebook news feed and liked a non political RNZ article about a local tech company succeeding overseas. When I pushed “like” a “related pages” carousel popped up featuring the Jacinda Ardern page with her profile photo and the Labour Party page with their logo.

So I tried a number of other articles on my news feed. An RNZ article about Ihaumato, Stuff article about Jacinda and Scott Morrison , A newshub article about Winston Peters and quarantining, Newshub article about the police constable with the picture of Mark Mithcell. All articles when I pushed like then popped up a “related pages” carousel with Jacinda Ardern’s profile page. And on Newsroom page they have related pages permanently on the right of their page and it again shows Jacinda ardern.

Related pages aren’t officially an ads, although they act as an ad. Companies don’t pay to have them. Facebook is the one that serves them up.

So my question is, Are “Related Pages” an ad and should it come under the election rules? Facebook is the one that is serving them up through their algorithm. While the political parties don’t pay Facebook is providing free ads through it’s related pages, and suggestions to show certain political parties profiles linked to news articles. Or should the political parties and news companies have to turn off their related pages options during the election period. And while our major newspapers might claim to be unbiased, the facebook algorithm seems to think they are linked to labour.

Well, honeymoon period lasted for about 1 second. Megan Wood has zero credibility! Labour Party KiwiBuild housing deficit has grown bigger, not smaller under her. Next thing is she’ll use her new responsibility as an excuse that she has been busy tracking those released without being properly tested for COVID-19 as reason why kiwibuild target had to be deferred! This is rather sad. This is more than just a dog, this is a police officer. The sentence should of be harsher.

A Northland man has been sentenced to more than five years jail for stabbing police dog Caesar twice in the head, trying to ram police cars, aggravated burglary and other related offences.

Adam Tipene, 32, was charged with eight offences from a high-speed police chase and burglary in Whangārei in December 2018.

      Police dogs are a tool plain and simple the title dog handler and working dog is a give away, if they were anything else then every cop would have one for cuddles and support.
      
      most average joe public has dogs as pets which is different, once intense speacialized training comes into it they become a tool. the handler still needs to be the dogs best friend tho as no dog will work properly if youre not its best mate.

What is the dollar value of “recommending” and “related pages” ads by you tube and facebook favouring certain NZ Political parties. It would certainly equate to more than $50. I am really bemused. Labour had way fewer votes than National at the election and could only seize power through a coalition of Misfits so how come the polls say they are getting 60 to 70%. It simply doesn’t make sense. I cannot believe that a large percentage of National voters have changed their allegiance to Labour, especially after their disastrous performance in every area.

Instead of BLM should it be MBLM because at the end of the day that is what we are arguing about.
Male Black Lives Matter is about the death of blacks who seem to be exclusively male. On the other side, the police who are involved also appear to be exclusively male.
Would/will increasing numbers of female police officers have any effect on the number of deaths and the racial bias?
Or, would black female police officers correct the stated imbalance?

Someone said it was a good idea. It went viral. Then Winston demanded it happen now. Even Todd Muller demanded that the Government reveal the date when it would begin! The Queenstown folk started saying it would happen in July. Because of snow.

But as time passes it looks like it is not a happening thing, at least not for 2020. Which brings me back to my often asked question: “What is the exit strategy?” It is extremely unlikely that NZ will have community transmission again. But we are faced with closed off borders and an impoverished country. In Australia overseas tourism is about 3% of GDP:

In New Zealand overseas tourism is 6% of GDP. That may not sound like a big difference but it is enormous. Australia will recover in a much shorter time.

There must be someone in the Government thinking about an exit strategy. If they are waiting for a vaccine it may be a long wait. I did some reading on vaccines developed in the last 40 years. The fastest ever development of a vaccine since 1960 was for mumps. That took four years. 40 years after HIV there is still no vaccine. In fact I could find no records of ANY successful vaccine for a corona virus. (I am not claiming that as a fact – I devoted 30 minutes to a google search.)

But let’s take a best case scenario – that a vaccine is developed and rolled out to achieve herd immunity globally within 3 years. Are we seriously going to be locked up in New Zealand for three years?

I just noted Dr Fauci saying that a virus could be available in early 2020, if one could be made. If one can’t, then either the government is going to have to change its policy and admit it was wrong, or this country will simply wither.

  You think so? I posit that it’s extremely likely that there will be community transmission. Whether we detect it or not is another matter because upwards of 80% of infections a asymptomatic, and most of the rest involve only minor symptoms which individuals usually ignore while their body deals with it.
  
  However the exit strategy is defined, it will need to centre on acceptance that SARS-COV-2 is with us, and it will kill vulnerable people in the same way as ILI’s already kill vulnerable people.
  
  The alternative is a bunker mentality with the prospect of a mandated, DNA-altering vaccine being the only way to avoid development of a North Korean-type economy.

    There aren’t any vaccines against coronavirus in humans because up to now, there hasn’t really been a need to develop any. Excluding SARS, MERS, and the current beast, the four coronaviruses that infect humans only cause the common cold.
    
    I’m quite hopeful that one will be developed against SARS-CoV-2 and start to be rolled out by around this time next year. We know that the immune system eliminates the virus from those who are infected (if they don’t die from it) including producing neutralising antibodies. Remember that vaccination mimics a natural infection so it elicits exactly the same response from the same immunological actors and pathways that a real infection with SARS-CoV-2 does. Vaccination tricks part of the immune system into thinking that it has, in fact, been infected and it behaves accordingly.
    
    The biology of HIV is very different to that of SARS-CoV-2. While the immune system does produce antibodies towards HIV, these are ineffective as the virus keeps mutating. Antibodies recognise defined shapes. When they find that shape they lock on and bind to it. HIV keeps mutating so the shapes on its surface proteins that the antibody would otherwise bind to keep changing. This allow that virus to stay one step ahead. The other issue with HIV is that it also infects a very important part of the immune system, CD4 cells, which are kind of like the conductors of the immunological orchestra and destroys them. Coronaviruses don’t do this.
    
    To the best of my knowledge, no one has ever eliminated an HIV infection on their own. In the absence of antiretroviral drugs, the virus is always present in an infected person’s system, even years after the infection.       Aunty, totally agree about why there’s no BCV vaccine, primarily because there’s been no need. Both SARS and MERS basically died down on their own well before any vaccine could have been ready, and the most widespread BCv causes around 30% of colds and is never (?) fatal. We’d love to have a vaccine against colds, but one that acts against only 30% of them, would you pay for that ?
      
      And HIV isn’t a super mutator like the Influenza family, one of the major issues is the CD4 infection. HIV preferentially uses the CD4 cells to infect and that makes a vaccine very tricky to engineer to be effective.

      No – if a virus could be developed for the common cold, it would be a gold mine for the firm that pulled it off. Think about the economic cost each year from people coming down with colds. All the media seem to be criticizing Trump for the numbers of his Tulsa turnout. It turns out that the his televised speech had record ratings.

A whopping 7.7 million total viewers tuned into Fox News from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. EDT during Trump’s remarks, making it the most watched Saturday in the network’s history during that time period, according to early Nielsen data.

Trump’s rally also gave Fox News its largest Saturday night primetime audience ever from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

To go along with that impressive figure there is also the online streaming figures to factor in. Eliminating the over 2 million views on the FoxNews feed — just in case those were considered in their ratings — a cursory look over the various news network accounts on YouTube shows more widespread viewership. At least another 4 million views can be totaled there, and that is hardly a comprehensive tally.

  Simple reality … if Trump wants to win in November then he either (a) needs to broaden his voters beyond his base or (b) needs to somehow drive down the number of voters who will vote for Biden.
  
  His Tulsa rally didn’t do (a). There’s no reaching out to the middle. Just red meat, grievances and prejudices for his case. But his schtick is old and tired, and so not even the base came out for him … the place was only a third full.
  
  His Tulsa rally was the opposite of (b). He looked weak and beatable and vulnerable. Biden’s voters will feel energised after that display.
  
  So it really doesn’t matter how many people watched it on Fox News. The base watched it, will likely still vote for him, but probably have more doubts now than they had a week ago. And the non-base didn’t see anything to convince them to vote for Trump.

The indignation and shaming of whites over a “noose” being found in NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace’s garage proves to be nothing more than a garage door “pull rope”. That’s what the FBI has found.

The drama, the liberal white angst, the sympathy for Wallace, who seems to be the lone NASCAR full-time driver who is black …. all wasted.

Including NASCAR’s own statement after the so-called “noose” was found:

‘We are angry and outraged, and cannot state strongly enough how seriously we take this heinous act.”

      He’s in the clear. This term is derogatory, but not racist, because “red necks” aren’t a race. So you can say whatever you like about them without being racist.
      
      If that’s the case, though, New Zealand is on thin ice. Are Maori a race, or is Polynesian the race of Maori? If Maori aren’t a race, can it be racist to discriminate against Maori (as opposed to discriminate against all Polynesians)?

Why did no one think to mention that Bubba wasn’t targeted because there’s one the same in every garage.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders on John Bolton – an excerpt from her new book. She describes a man drunk on power (Bolton) who had to have his own motorcade, even before those who outranked him.

As he did on many of our foreign trips, Bolton had a separate agenda and often arrived and departed on a different plane because he didn’t want to travel on Air Force One with the President and his team. Bolton apparently felt too important to travel with the rest of us. It was a running joke in the White House.

“As we were ready to depart for the Winfield House we loaded onto a small black bus…On board were Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, Acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney, Senior Advisor Stephen Miller, Senior Advisor Dan Scavino, Walsh and me. Based on US protocol, Mnuchin, Mulvaney and Walsh all outranked Bolton…Mnuchin, one of the highest ranking officials in government, far outranked him. We waited at the hotel but there was no sign of Bolton or his motorcade. After a while we gave up and headed to the Winfield House to meet the president…

“While en route, UK police directed us to pull to the side of the road because someone was coming through…we looked over to see who it was and sure enough here came Bolton and his motorcade. We waited and watched as Bolton sped by and left us in the dust…The discussion on the bus quickly moved from casual chit chat to how arrogant and selfish Bolton could be, not just in this moment but on a regular basis. If anyone on the team should have merited a motorcade it was Mnuchin, but he was a team player…

“The rest of us looked on and nodded in approval, proud of Mick for standing up for us. Mick even got a few high fives from officials thrilled someone had put Bolton in his place.”

    alex, the news this lunchtime (both on Newshub and NewsRoom) that Light Rail is off the table for now is great news for all of NZ. However, depending the election outcome it could be back.
    
    Reading Newshub and NewsRoom, the scheme could come back.
    
    What is frightening is the ignorance of Twitford and Goofy in promoting the scheme. Also frightening is that the media go to Matt Lowrie for a comment (the Greater Auckland – transport blog). This is a person who has no transport experience to speak of but has incredible influence on politicians and the media, because they are all too lazy to understand the issues.
    
    Goofy is quoted lamenting the failure to proceed, claiming it is needed to “support intensification of housing, and head off bus congestion due to occur within 3 to 4 years – light rail needs to be in place before then” he is quoted as saying.
    
    What a misinformed “tool” of Lowrie and co.
    
    I have experience of light rail schemes around the world, and I can say without fear of contradiction, if light rail is the answer to a transport need, you’ve asked the wrong questions and you’re on the wrong page.
    
    Light Rail is an expensive people mover and rather than solving congestion, causes congestion. It is expensive and Auckland does not need Light Rail, anymore than it needs CRL.
    
    And just one more thing. There was never a complete business case for Light Rail. AT’s business case had more holes than a colander in it, and NZTA struggled to match AT’s effort, producing a document that withstand any scrutiny.
    
    So, for the moment we can celebrate, but should Labour/Green win in September, this ghastly scheme (corpse) will be given another life.

Decided to ask a few questions a couple weeks ago at local Department of conservation about 1080 at an area I frequent alot, were quite helpfull and answered all my questions.

well fast forward 2wks and just returned from a bushwalk in the area that got toxin applied yesterday and big wtf moment as what the public is sold and what actually happens is f**king appalling. will be returning there this wknd with gps and camera, was the an eye opener and would encourage you all to go see for yourself what we do with millions of hectares of our forests every year 🙁

It started over a week ago with Jacinda trying to cover up what happened with women Tourist that had a special exemption to travel to Wellington for a funeral of a loved one and without having been tested for CORID-19 and now after a week of not the figures asked for of 58 others that left without testing the passing of the buck has Jacinda not front the daily conference and Ashley Bloomfield continue the lies, but today after those figures that were wanted were released late last night and the buck was again to another of the Health Directors Senior members to explain today. You can tell that no one wants to confess to the fuck up or tell the truth so will pass it on for someone else to be thrown under the bus.

Here is the Rotorua case we were expecting

New Zealand has two new cases of Covid-19, taking our total number of active cases to 12.

One of the cases is in managed isolation – a woman in her 60s who flew into the country from India on June 18 on the Air India repatriation flight AI1316.

She was staying at the Pullman Hotel in Auckland but has now been transferred to the Jet Park quarantine facility.

Health chief Ashley Bloomfield has also confirmed there is a positive case in Rotorua following the city’s Ibis Hotel being put into lockdown.

The Royal NZ Navy’s new supply ship, Aotearoa, is hailed by Stuff as the biggest ship our Navy’s every had.

It’s not quite as long as the battle cruiser New Zealand which New Zealand supplied to the Royal Navy before and during World War 1 (173.2 metres compared with 179m). Still it has a bigger displacement, and lower speed, as you would expect from an oil tanker/cum freighter.

HMS New Zealand was, well colonial. Can’t help admiring her eight 12in guns though. For the time, a decent bit of muscle.

Unintended consequences: St John ended up with far less ambulance calls.

Certainly some of the reduced call outs will be due to less accidents – a good thing.

But ambulance calls are a reasonable proxy for health engagement – people calling over heart concerns etc. Less ambulances surely means that many people chose to ignore signs of ill health which is going to have long term impacts further down the road.

So, it looks as though Northland and Auckland are about to have their current water shortages solved. Great !

Can we therefore expect that in the next 6 months or so that all Northland farmers will build dams and reservoirs and ponds, so that next year we don’t hear any similar complaints about water supply ?
That this year’s conditions have created some sort of “self-help” response ?

Will the Auckland City Council ensure that domestic water storage facilities are easy to implement?
i.e attach a rainwater tank, instal a greywater system, maybe even introduce water meters so that people take a responsible approach to water usage ( I live in Kapiti, and the only good thing the Council has done in the last 10 years was to make water meters mandatory: since their installation we have never had water restrictions and or shortages ).

Health Minister David Clark has brutally thrown Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield under the bus while standing right next to him, after the Government’s quarantine testing botch-up.

The Director-General of Health can’t rule out cases of COVID-19 being back in the community after the Ministry of Health failed to test hundreds of people before releasing them from quarantine.

Interesting article, we need to hear more about this from other lawyers

As a young woman, I came to New Zealand eleven years ago from the Middle East to undertake my Master of Laws degree.

Early on I was struck by how rights and freedoms are so frequently taken for granted by those born in this country. Because I come from a part of the world with so few protections, fair trial rights that protect people accused of crimes – of any type – are particularly important to me.

Now as a defence lawyer, I feel compelled to explain the very damaging effects to those rights that the Sexual Violence (Legislation) Bill would inflict if enacted.

Most people who catch the new coronavirus don’t experience severe symptoms, and some have no symptoms at all. COVID-19 saves its worst for relatively few.

ICU nurse Sherie Antoinette has seen the serious cases first hand.

The lucky ones — if you can call them that — recover, but not in the sense that their lives are back to normal. For some, the damage is permanent. Their organs will never fully heal.

“When they say ’recovered,’ they don’t tell you that that means you may need a lung transplant,” Antoinette wrote in a Twitter post. “Or that you may come back after discharge with a massive heart attack or stroke, because COVID makes your blood thick as hell. Or that you may have to be on oxygen for the rest of your life.”
