      Now I have never been too enthralled by Nicky Kaye, Brett68, but I think your comment is petty. Firstly, the ‘prima donna’ rumour – and that’s all it is – or hearsay as you report it, is opinion only. Who has the proof?
      It is not ‘pathetic’ to resign this close to the election. It means the the new candidate will have a clear run, and the expense of the election campaign will not be wasted – a good example of how to use other people’s money.
      As for Amy Adams – I suspect that if she had been given a place at the top table, she would have taken it.

      Swarbrick has no chance at all unless Labour does not contest the seat which is highly highly unlikely. The Greens only secured 2000 votes in 2017 July to run in a very distant third.

    A female Nat MP who entered parliament at the last election gave a maiden speech saying that she was going to support giving ‘lots more money to toddlers and children as it makes the biggest difference’.Baby bonus, WFF, childcare payments and others already exist.
    
    It’s just more welfare to families instead of opportunity – why should graduates get assisted to raise their own children in this day and age?

  It is a time of change in the National Party and people do tend to make decisions as their thoughts crystalize. Good Luck to Nicky and Amy in their future endeavours. However the national party is bigger than any one individual.
  
  On another topic I expect Winston to do something in the next week or two. The media cycle is showing signs of being dominated by the head to head between Judith and Jacinda. Winston lives and dies by media oxygen and he wont be happy.

  Well with Adams resigning it simply highlights how duplicitous she is (for initially resigning months ago, then staying on under Muller, now resigning again), she comes across as not wanting to be a team player.
  
  However Kaye is different. She too may be somewhat “woke” but otherwise she is an intelligent, hardworking and respected MP. Collins should ask her to stay on.
  
  I suppose though for Nikki, she has been disadvantaged by having her election campaign manager (Michelle Boag) step down from that role at a very crucial time.
  
  Personally, in this particular situation, should perhaps Boag be reinstated as Nikki’s campaign manager? After all why is it that “disgraced” former Labour Party Presidents (eg Mike Williams who traveled to Australia to dig up dirt on John Key is still allowed prominent media spots and is involved with other campaigns? Note I’m simply pointing out the hypocrisy here. After all do we really want Labour or Greens to potentially take Auckland Central?

    It’s different when the left do it. Personally I’m glad that the blood-letting was short and sharp. Despite immense sympathy for her health situation and admiration for her work ethic, I’ve never rated her leadership prospects.
    
    I know Key was a big fan, and she’s always been highly rated within the party, but from a voter’s perspective I’ve never seen the appeal, and wouldn’t put her in the same class as Collins.

  It was a good start for Judith yesterday. She made it clear she values competence and “diversity of thought” over diversity of skin colour. That is exactly as it should be and something we have needed to hear for a long time from one of our parliamentary representatives. If some MPs can’t accept this idea, then they are better off indulging their too exquisite sensibilities elsewhere.

    Whenever the word “diversity” is thrown at Collins et al by the media, they should respond by asking “diversity in what sense?”. They will either have to explain what they mean (i.e. fewer white people), or not be able to do so. The word is just thrown around and never interrogated.

Well, that escalated fast, as they say. To lose one senior MP might be regarded as misfortune but two… The worst thing about Nikki Kaye resigning is that Chloe Swarbrick is now pretty likely to win Auckland Central. That popping noise you can hear is coming from the champagne bottles in the Green party. The laughing noise is Labour.

    Kaye won by about 1600 with about 13,200 votes.
    Helen White Labour was second.
    
    The Green candidate, granted not Swarbrick, only got 2,838 in total. Saying that the Greens would have a ‘safe seat’ is fanciful. Kaye has already said she’ll be out electioneering for National. There will be her personal vote and now sympathy vote to overcome.
    
    A safe seat? Where are all the votes to come from?

  Yes, unfortunately it looks like the Greens will now definitely get back in. Worse case scenario is Labour/Green out polls National/Act with no NZ First to act as a handbrake. I hope to god that Judith can go one better than Don Brash did and snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.   And now we have a billion dollar issue of botched EQC repairs in Christchurch and unfinished (or in some cases still not started) promises.
  
  Its good to have a MP who can speak their mind – especially to the media but Brownlee needs to also learn that leadership requires more than just being belligerent.

    Brownlee was never on the leaders list, or was so low on it, it hardly mattered. He was never going to be picked. He’s there to act as an attack/guard dog for Collins.

Talking of the Media Party lots of talk about Tiwai , lost jobs , devastation etc but I don’t recall the same level of angst over Taranaki and the gutting of an even longer industrial tradition there and the consequences of that Captain’s call . Hmmmm.

ECE – Early Childhood Education. Is there really a serious problem with ECE here? Child Poverty Action Group says yes, due to a perceived gap in culturally appropriate services and ‘relentless pursuit of profit’. Profit, can’t have that. So nationalise it.

Whatever happened to parents wanting the best for their children and making it happen?

Meantime Dr Mike Bedford, an expert in ECE health issues, has entered the debate on the wireless this morning, and focused on tiger turf in ECE play areas. Wants real grass, didn’t mention mud though. Good luck with that. In any case, nothing stopping ECE centres planting grass. He also reckoned that some parents don’t know what is quality ECE and might be swayed by eg a free-fees period.

In a 2018 paper, Mike Bedford – a public health expert, specialising in health and wellbeing in early childhood education settings – said the quality of care and education was “drastically lacking”. “While being fenced into small spaces devoid of grass and natural environments, with no space to run… It’s not surprising therefore that children start school with language problems. This is anti-education.”

Anti-education. Really?

  I couldn’t believe how rude and incompetent she was during that interview. But Reti was a star – handled all the rubbish questions calmly, then was explaining clearly, and in detail what National would have done differently which obviously wasn’t to Stewart’s liking.
  Stewart spends most of her allocated hour focussing on perceived racism and ‘diversity’ issues. She set up Hamish Bidwell for a rant on the Crusaders’ name prior to the Reti interview. The worst example of ‘advocacy journalism’.

  If time was an issue, why not have the (much more important) COVID questions at the front and leave the diversity bullshit until the end?
  
  I don’t know much of Shane Reti, but I thought he did well in this interview. Good on him.
  
  I’m over this stuff now. Way past time National MPs did their best to ‘craft a new narrative’ – in that MPs are in Parliament to represent all New Zealanders and that they assign portfolios on merit not tokenism.
  
  Unless they do this they are playing a game they can never win. I followed the Key and English years closely and there was never this scrutiny of Labour when they had a very white shadow cabinet and where National had Maori representation much greater than in the general population.
  
  The whole thing is a media beat up, a ‘Get National’ hit and National are mugs if they play along.

I remember when

I hear Duncan Garner suggesting that Amy Adams’ going, staying and then going again is being selfish.
It is an argument that can be debated from either side. Did she say she would stay for the good of the party, or was she just thinking of herself as Duncan thought?
Is it understandable for experienced politicians to come and go depending on whether they get a position they want? Is there any point in staying, if you don’t think you will be able to make a meaningful, worthwhile contribution?

This loss of experience is a huge concern. We are going through the largest economic and health issue of a generation, National needs a strong team. We need a strong opposition full of people with ministerial experience. This should be a concern to everyone.

Collins and Brownlee are going to be leading a team of backbenchers shortly.

Call it wokeness or whatever, but National is strongest when it can attract talent with more than one viewpoint. Kaye and Adams by all accounts are very hard working MP’s.

Also – Auckland Central is now at major risk.

It’s early days yet, but National via Collins/Brownlee might be experiencing the Beginnings of a Never Trump movement.

Not because Collins is a Trump (though she might be viewed that way within the narrow political views of NZ voters), but because even the hint that Collins might spark a revolution within the party that causes it to move away from the Cult of Devout Centrism has got those with their snouts deep in the trough (yes, National is full of them, too, and their consultants, and their surrogates) a little nervous.

When the dust settles on National’s defeat, and if Collins survives, the so-called Right of NZ politics may indeed fracture into a larger ACT, the rump of National, and a new Centrist cult consisting of disgruntled former Nats.

I say good. National’s had it sewn up for too long. If competition in the market is good, so too is it in politics.

Funny how circles work, ain’t it?

The Labour Party inclusiveness of diversity seems to be missing when it comes to important public announcements.
Apart from issues that directly affect Maori, when do we regularly see Maori Labour members except for marae visits, the annual Ratana visit and at Waitangi Day? I am of course ignoring Willie Jackson’s appearance on the AM show, which is simply for entertainment value.
It would also be interesting to see the Labour Party list for the Election compared with polulation demographics. Is it unrepresentative? Is it diversity for the sake of it?

    Three huge issues not being addressed:
    
    1) The date for the sentencing is well known – 7 weeks in advance. That gives ample time for 2 weeks quarantine and travel etc. There is absolutely no reason to give these people a free pass.
    
    2) Most of these people are coming from stans which have extremely poor health reporting. The people kicking up positives in quarantine are doing so at a rate at least 10x what the official infection rate is.
    
    3) There is concern that Tarrant might use the event for some soapboxing and there is talk of him ending up being on a video link for management. If so, then all these people will travel halfway around the world to end up watching a video they could have watched from (insert stan of your choice).

    The polls were within the margin of error for the popular vote.
    
    Yes Trump voters may not say so in a poll (why? Given how proud they all seem) but Biden has better nett approval and overall approval figures than Hillary ever did. So more people are coming out against Trump even if he gets the same figures as 2016.
    
    This time, they’re 2-3x the margin of error. Even Florida is looking like it could be a possible Biden win.
    
    You win Florida and you only need one of the other states that Trump flipped in ’16 and it’ll be game over, hello President Biden.

So “Anywhere in New Zealand” does not mean “Anywhere in New Zealand”! I guess that “Anywhere in New Zealand” actually means “Anywhere in New Zealand, except on Mondays, Tuesdays, Weddbnesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays”.

You should update your policy wording accordingly.

Here is something to think about. Trump aged 74 has been facing constant criticism and undermining from the Democrats, inside his own party, his own administration and all and sundry around the world like our own selected Ms Nobody and the sissy Tru’doh’

While mental issues affect different people differently, old man Trump has survived for the full term, giving as good as he got, while the pressure got to our 54 year old recently resigned leader within 53 days. All those people in the media here and the SJW, who claim to be “woke” and “Kind”, while stabbing and turning the knife into Trump everyday in the main stream and social media every day show no such qualities.

So I am happy to see the other millennial like wets and sensitive petals like Amy Adams and Nikki Kaye from the National party cut and run.

Compare them to some one like Judith Collins who has outlived the lot of them and Gerry Brownlee it is a no-contest.

I do admire Bridges’ bottle though. He front-footed and stared down the traitorous Jamie-Lee Ross’ treachery and also when he moved quickly and flushed out the plotters in the May coup. He should probably be shadow Justice Minister against the hapless Andy Little. He has a future. But not as a leader, despite his capabilities (seeing off Peters), unless he can sort out his biggest public persona turn-off – his ponderous manner and “marbles in his mouth” diction which makes him sound like a pompous slow-wit.

How good was Collins when announcing her reshuffle and fielding the media questions? If you didn’t see it, I can tell you she was absolutely masterful. Batted away any difficult questions with ease, almost charmed the media, got to everyone, was clear, direct, good-natured, not flustered, never raised her voice, had quick answers for everything without sounding glib. It was a master-class, and and everyone now realises Ardern is in deep doo-doo.

I have been tracking the bookie’s odds on the American Presidential election. Trump’s favouritism reached a high between February 7th to 18th. It has declined ever since. Biden is now more favoured than Trump was back in February.
I find that a bit sad. That election has attracted more than $80mil in matched bets, so there is a few bob at stake. The market for our election is too small to have much significance, but interestingly, National’s chances have weakened this week which is very surprising.

As do the Minister and officials who under their watch released Covid positive quarantine candidates into the public to drive from Auckland to Wellington.

The difference between true Kiwis and the perpetual troughers who are paid by the hard working kiwis is stark.

What I would think will happen under a Collins led Government.

Firstly , The removal of the RMA.
Then from that-
Any restrictions on dairy farming on the Canterbury Plains and the Mackenzie Basin will be removed , the result of that will be many more thousands of cows in these areas, with a corresponding pollution increase-

The reopening of Oil Drilling-
Coal mining on the West Coast will be all go-
As will selective felling of Native Forests in all of the countries national parks.-
Allowing many more people to immigrate into NZ, mainly from China-
That will result in a far greater housing shortage than we already have.

And a greater emphasis on rural water storage, which wont be a bad thing.
The raising of the Superannuation retirement age, with not a long led in time, like 15 year time frame.

The Coronavirus situation in Melbourne is not looking too good. I assume they are bracing themselves for the hospitalisations and deaths that will start to manifest there in the coming weeks? 20 – 30 dead over the next month would be my best guess.

And the failure of the Swedish experiment becomes more apparent every day. If we had adopted their foolish approach, we would have had 2,800 deaths by now with no end to it in sight. If, as the actual data shows is correct, and I have no reason to believe that it isn’t, only around 10-15% of Swedes have so far been infected. Not only is this far short of what is required to achieve herd immunity, but it also implies that the final death toll in Sweden maybe around 25,000 to 35,000 people before a vaccine is found.

I hope for their sake that they will be revising their hamfisted approach and introducing stricter protocols around social distancing, mass gatherings,facemask wearing and lockdowns to bring both the number of infections and deaths down.

Absolute rubbish.

You, like may others, assume we have a similar demographic as Sweden. We do not.

We do not have massive immigrant enclaves where all health protocols are ignored. We do not have the same exposure to those immigrants in elder care facilities nor do we have multi story slums/ghettos.

We also have vastly more vitamin D.

Masks work when you are infected and unless properly utilised do nothing. How many people do you know who have had covid?

  Unlike you, Tall man, I have not been wrong on this epidemic once. You can live in denial and fantasy as much as you like, but that doesn’t change the biology of this virus or the pandemic that it causes which exists independently of you and your ability to understand it!
  
  By the way, we have a huge immigrant community in this country where many of the health protocols are ignored. It’s called South Auckland. And God help us if COVID gets established there!

    22 deaths from covid, although all had other serious illnesses. 35 deaths in 2010 from the h1n1 flu with a lockdown so minimal you obviously missed it.
    
    Not one of you covid worriers can suggest an exit strategy so NZ can get back into the world. Ardern will run out of money eventually then she’ll come for what you have.

    I live in South Auckland.
    During Level 4 the people around here took the same precautions as everywhere else. The Counties-Manukau DHB is 6th in number of virus cases despite the airport with all the workers being in this area.
