        Yup, if you must wear a hat, get one that fits. That one is far too small for his body type. Needs a much wider brim and not to be perched on top.
        
        While a Gentleman should never go uncovered, one should attempt to choose a hat in keeping with ones age and physique.

  I read this morning that the Government are going to apply their Taranaki roadmap to Southland.
  Per the ODT “The Taranaki 2050 Roadmap has been developed by a mix of business, iwi, community, union, education and local and central government groups” Per Grant Robertson the Taranaki Roadmap will be a “just transition”. I assume “just’ means Marxist.

  This photo is very revealing. No one is really focused on Ardern, no one is smiling or even showing a neutral, “I’m here listening intently” expression.
  If I didn’t know better I would think this was Jacinda announcing her congratulations to national on their winning the 2020 election.
  Maybe it’s a dress rehearsal.

I have really enjoyed Mike Yardley on ZB during Mike Hosking’s absence. Mr Yardley has covered some sensational occurrences while holding the post. He hasn’t missed a beat. One of his advantages is that he is not burdened by a silly snorting wife between 5am and 6am. Hosking’s wife has atrocious diction and seems to completely lack insight. (I have appreciated Tim Dower in the 5am slot for the past two weeks.)

July 08 – The person who has tested positive for COVID-19 is a man in his 30s. He arrived in New Zealand on July 3 from New Delhi, India

July 09 – The first case is a woman in her 20s who arrived in New Zealand on July 3 from India. She has been staying in isolation at the Stamford Plaza in Auckland.
The second case is a man in his 30s who arrived in New Zealand on July 4 from Italy and is staying in isolation at the Commodore Hotel in Christchurch.
The third case is a man in his 20s who arrived in New Zealand on July 3 from India. He has been staying in isolation at the Stamford Plaza in Auckland.

July 10 – The first case is a man in his 20s who arrived in New Zealand on 28 June from India. He has been at the Sudima Auckland Airport facility since arrival. He tested negative on day 3 of his stay and has subsequently tested positive to an around day 12 test.
The second case is a man in his 20s who arrived in New Zealand on 27 June from England. He has been in managed isolation at the Sudima Lake Rotorua. He tested positive on 9 July on day 12 of his stay.

July 11 – Today’s new case is a woman in her 20s who arrived in New Zealand on 2 July from London, via Doha and Sydney.

July 12 – Today’s new case is a woman in her 20s who arrived in New Zealand on 4 July from Rome, via Doha and Sydney.

July 13 – no new cases

July 14 – Today’s case is a woman in her 60s who arrived in New Zealand on June 30 from Pakistan via Doha and Sydney.

July 15 – The first case is a man in his 60s who arrived in New Zealand on July 10 from Pakistan via Dubai. The second case we are reporting today is a woman in her 50s who arrived in New Zealand on July 10 from Dublin, via Dubai.

July 16 – Today’s case is the child of two people previously reported as having COVID-19. They arrived in New Zealand from Italy on July 4.

      And those rates are a minimum. There will be many more people who have had the virus and not even known it. I would like a breakdown of the 22 deaths by age and comorbidities. I think you will find that the death rate is zero for those under 70 and without existing complicating factors. I also doubt that autopsies were performed on the deceased, so there may well have been zero deaths “from” Covid-19.
      
      More people need to acquire an appreciation of how to interpret data in order to reach sensible and sound conclusions.

    We are only delaying the inevitable by not exposing everyone to the virus. Data suggests that the Herd Immunity Threshold (HIT) is only about 20% of the population, at which point the virus runs out of “hosts” and cannot perpetuate itself. This is in contrast to the initial estimates of about 70%+ (which, like all of the initial estimates was wildly overstated by orders of magnitude).

    First-term National MP Hamish Walker has been called racist for a press release claiming that up to 11,000 people from “India, Pakistan and Korea” could be heading to Dunedin, Invercargill and Queenstown for quarantine.
    
    “I think it’s disgraceful and reprehensible. It’s scaremongering and frankly it’s racist,” Housing Minister Megan Woods said.
    
    Initially, was Hamish Walker more right than Megan Woods may have been wrong?
    
    (Stuff has spoken to Walker’s source, a South Island medical professional, who confirmed Southern officials had been told to expect 11,000 people to go through isolation there, although they would not all be undergoing isolation at the same time.)

We are being softened up to accept community transmission of Covid-19.

While Bloomfield is making glib excuses (or spin/lying) about the reasons for why the case in Auckland might have happened, he is also shifting the blame onto WHO and claiming we are doing what WHO (and Australia etc) are doing. When will they understand that WHO has been utterly crap with its pandemic advice? Conveniently forgetting that the mixing of multiple waves of returnees into quarantine hotels was mismanaged by Labour. Also the false negatives likely from Covid testing are not being taken into account and are being understated. We need to take decisions in the best interests of protecting NZ’s expensively won covid-free status. Do what is right for NZ even if it is more onerous. Don’t be penny wise and pound foolish in the haste to release people from quarantine.

Its clear that Jacinda wants to fight an election based on the past lucky outcome of “we are still in Covid and we are winning ” election by trying to keep us in Covid mode while National wants to highlight the impact on the economy and the inability (or lack) of brains for doing that.

Jacinda’s strategy seems to be to plug her fingers into her ears keening “lalalalalala…”.

But CoL should be easy fodder for National. Judith will revel in any one-on-one debates without the obstruction of Mallard. We might yet see another total mental breakdown this election a la Phil Twyford on TV, Claire Curran in Parliament. Or hiding behind pillars like Sroubek lover Lees-Galloway. Or regressing into childhood Maori by the Kelvin Davis. The hubris of the smug Robertson, Hipkins and Woods will soon be blow torched too. Greens will commit suicide on their own with stupid policies–Chloe won’t win a seat in Auckland Central unless Labour hand her a free ride. Winston/Jones will drown in their own puddle of blatant lies and bombast.

I know that Judiths “To do” list is probably fairly long after winning the election but can we add the following items.

The sale of TVNZ preferably to whoever wants to buy it, preferably Fox.

Immediate Tax Cuts, I know the books are a mess but I dont want to go through nine years of waiting like I did previously.

Benefit cuts, at least take out what labour did as part of the covid recovery.

Just stop paying for motels for winz clients. If you offer something for free you will get unlimited demand.

Axe the power of general competence for local bodies. Force them to stick to their knitting.

Anyone got anything else to add, I could sit here all day.

  Our company was actively involved with developing equipment for this market sector back in 2012.
  We identified the absolute need to balance variable energy sources with demand side appliance and storage management.
  We were ignored and generally messed around.
  There are a lot of people in this market sector receiving large incomes that continuously make very piss poor decisions at others expense, not to mention the high levels of political interference.
  Our lesson learnt was that any sector that involves political interference is guaranteed to be a debacle.

  @Maggy, was always going to happen they just didn’t want you to know about it.
  Explanation; the “Power Grid” is a top down system, Generator(s) sit at the top and the power flows “downhill” to the consumers. The system was never designed (many years ago) to be being fed “up” from the bottom.
  In other words if you have a few people with solar / wind or whatever feeding back into the grid it is not an issue as that power spreads sideways to your neighbours who don’t generate power. This has minimal effect on the grid as there is not usually a lot of power involved.
  If however you have whole streets / suburbs (Think Australia) where most people have solar then everyone “excess” power cant feed the neighbour as they also have excess and so on. Now we have a “large” generation capacity at the bottom of the grid and it must now start trying to feed the power back uphill. Remember the system is not designed that way. So typically local voltages climb and that feed back disrupts the downhill control of the grid.
  That sideways spread would help even further back up the grid but if most / all of Sydney was bathed in sunshine you can see the issue.
  The only real solution is to consume all that you make, with or without batteries, and export very little or no power to the grid.
  You save more money by not buying power than you will ever make by selling power back to the grid.

    Also to feed power in to the grid the voltage must be higher than the grid.
    Some suburbs have so much solar installed, the grid average gets too high and the inverters are forced to trip out, not to mention many appliances becoming stressed by operating at their maximum voltage rating.
    There are a lot of other technical issues as well including local line impedance etc but the reasons remain the same.

      Lance, apart from voltage it is also a phase/power factor stability issue. Indeed, voltage is probably less of an issue.
      
      When there are just a few generators well synchonised via GPS etc then it is pretty easy to ensure phase stability.
      
      When there are thousands of small feed-ins, it is much more challenging because they’re all trying to both listen to the network and yell onto the network at the same time.
      
      When they are all pumping into the same grid it is easy to start getting poor phasing. This causes equipment to overheat, and in extreme cases causes transformers to catch fire, etc etc.

    Solar PV is now economical with panels costing approx 20-30c a watt, you can purchase an off the shelf complete 10Kw system on Alibaba for $12,000 including batteries. Install LED lighting and manage consumption and it works. NZ has an average of 2000 Hours of sunshine PA so assuming only 50% useable thats 10,000Kwh @ 30C Kw is $3,000 which is a 25% ROI so factors in a Diesel Generator – check out Trademe – $8,000 fully auto as back up.

  Buying power off the energy company at four or five times the price they pay you for your surplus power is not a good model.

    Anyway, if it is doable then all three components of power deliver — generation, transmissionx2 and retail will get government to regulate and stop the setting up of such schemes because of the claimed losses due to cannibalisation.
    
    There is precedence with water. Some councils ban creation of large storage systems under residential and rural properties.

    My son in Sydney looked into this. There are apparently all sorts of regulatory things that stop the use of “part time black connections”. I don’t know what the technical basis is – there may not be one – but “panels+battery+ disconnect some of the time” is not a starter there.

  Winston is wrong about the idea of the Govt buying the smelter for a whole lot of reasons. The aluminium industry has been turned on its head by China who control the whole process from mining, smelting and downstream manufacturing. The Tiwai smelter is such a tiny part of that industry it doesn’t even count.
  
  And before anyone else thinks that subsituting Tesla or hydrogen manufacturing is a good idea, think again. A huge datacentre would also only employ a few dozen people.
  
  The only option at the moment is to spill water from Manapouri for a couple of years until the Transpower network can be reconfigured so that its power can be part of the grid. Bear in mind that it is Benmore that basically supplies the North Island and that not much improvement in meeting Auckland’s demands for power can be achieved before there is another Cook Strait cable and a lot more infrastructure designed and built at Benmore and Haywards. It isn’t an easy job to do.

    Presumably you would also need an additional set of transmission lines overland in both islands to carry the load. What a nightmare trying to get approvals from ‘000s of landholders , NIMBY groups and conservation interests battling the concept all the way.
    A lot of theM would return Manapouri to the fantails given half a chance but would be unable to recognise the extent to which our economy is integrated and is as we speak being fragmented into a state of destruction.

The actual interview it was Heather duPA who said Muller was wasting time. She said, ” How do you feel about Team Muller they wasted 53 days ahead of an election it’s such a long time that’s gone up in smoke. They’ve basically attached to the party a shambles tag are you a bit grump at them?”
Simon “Look, it’s not a state secret I was really disappointed. I would have loved… it would have been a privilege to lead National into this election. But C’est la vie. That’s the way it goes. You know we in a sense wasted a bit of time there and um there’s a bunch of complex reasons for that. But right now while we are the under dog we are making back that time…and I think we are going to finish this election more strongly than the position we were in a week or so ago.”
To then present that as “Bridges takes a dig at Muller over wasting time” is grossly misleading and putting words in Bridges mouth.

  IMO all the Nat Party can do now (this close to the election) is to focus on some key, innovative, inclusive policies – and sell them carefully to the electorate.
  And – work hard to encourage, motivate and inspire wavering supporters to come back and vote for them.
  The time is not right for aggression and put downs orchestrated by smart-Alec internal advisors and consultants.
  Ordinary folk out here, away from Parliamentary politics, are starting to waver about the untouchability of Ms Ardern, but are nervous of the alternatives.
  If you’ve got something good to offer, do some clever marketing.

This may be a little ‘off-beat’, but i thort could be interesting for some. Against my partners best advice at the time, a friend of his bought a brand new Tesla car a couple of years ago. It came with all the fruit and cost over 200k. (I’ve been for a ride in it up Vicky Ave and it went from 0 to 100 in about 2 secs!) Anyway, he’s been trying to sell it, but best offer so far has been 90k. When my partner just ran the numbers, worked out that if his mate had bought $200k worth of Shares in Tesla back then, they would be worth about 2 mill today.
How does that work?

Notes on holidaying in NZ during July School Holidays.

Hauraki Rail Trail Thames to Paeroa Section is awesome. Someone turn every disused railway line in the country into a cycle track. It is great fun with the kids. Jolly Bike hire is also equally awesome.

The convenient cow general store in Hikutaia. Get your act together being closed at 10.30am as multiple cyclists with kids wanting drinks and snacks pass through is a good way to go broke.

Cafe 131 in Paeroa. Really decent burgers (approved by kids) and great menu. Pretty decent wine menu and prices. Friendly Staff. Kids ate like lions at the kill after cycling 34k.

Grafton Chalets in Thames is great. Friendly hosts, great rooms and views. Great Spa after cycling. Continental breakfast option was also goood.

Nakontong Thai Restaurant Thames. Excellent reco from hosts at chalets. Kids still eating like lions at kill. Friendly staff and lightning fast service.

Te Aroha township. Well worth a stop on the way to Rotorua. The domain walking tracks and geyser are well maintained and free. Ironique Cafe is also very good for coffee and lunch. Definite right wing town. When the hi viz maintenance contractor in the domain aint happy with Jacinda you know you are in the right place.

Holiday Inn Rotorua. Ok but servicing the rooms every 2nd day is not helping with Covid. Its just a cash grab. Make it clear on the website that you arent a full service hotel.

The Gondolas at Rotorua. Get your act together. Its school holidays have all your facilities operating not just 50%. Luge is still fun. Overpriced.

Rail Cruising at Rotorua. Ok but you guys need to work on your winter operations. Great concept but the carts need to be heated. Also stairs to get in and out of the carts are essential for more mobility limited people (not me). Replace the two way radios in the carts. You will get your ass prosecuted if someone has a heart attack in the boondocks. There is no cell phone coverage over a significant section of the track.

All in all NZ is pretty good for a holiday but would prefer Maui.

Good grief… Simon Bridges was brilliant on the AM show this morning.
Articulate, funny and best of all he was needling David Parker who was slowly losing his shit.
Simon starting calling him “Davo”, Parker mentioned that he didn’t like that name, so Simon continually referred to him as “Davo”.
He ran circles around Parker, cutting the legs out from under Parker’s carefully prepared script on how National are doomed.
Why on earth hadn’t we seen his version of Bridges before?

Many of you have been going hard on National and a number of the party’s MPs promoting policies that show they are really Labour lite.

But in the interests of balance, I would suggest you are not being fair, because it is not only National in Parliament that is Labour lite. I am referring to an Auckland city councillor and a Rodney Local Board councillor.

The first is Auckland Councillor representing the Orakei ward, Desley Lawson/Simpson (- DPF or Batman or Tony Stuart could probably give her CV as much as I can – but will not) is Chair of the Auckland Finance Committee – did she attempt to stop the 3.5% rate increase approved by Auckland Council yesterday? The hell NO, she proposed the motion. For those that don’t know of the lady, she is very much a National party person who isLabour lite in Council.

The problem for the lady, is after years of uncontrolled spending, and reduced income from Council activities, the council has a $750mill black hole. Reality says Auckland Council needs to reappraise what it does, how it does it and where its funding comes from. But that is not how it acts, instead it resorts to the easy option, a 3.5% rate rise. Has Auckland Coucil not heard:
1. People are losing their jobs;
2. People are taking pay cuts;
3. Businesses have closed?

So, the pool to pay a rates increase is shrinking!

Then there is the current Deputy chair of Rodney Local Board and former Deputy Leader of Act (now ranked 13 on the party’s list – the good lady claimed in Rodney local media that her demotion was due to “her success”). This lady is head of Rodney First a local ticket that dominates the Rodney Local Board. In 2017/8 the Rodney Local Board conceived and promoted the concept of a targeted local rate “to fix Rodney Local transport”. With some dubious publicity material 54% of locals responding to the survey with the Auckland Council 2018 budget proposals approved of the targeted rate. Armed with the approval, Rodney resident’s rates demands were increased by $150 per annum and the Local Board approached Auckland Transport. Their approach to AT was we have $4.5m per year, what roads can you deal. AT’s response was, “no can do, we don’t want your money”. So, did Rodney LB stop the local targeted rate? The Hell NO!

Instead, they reached a compromise with AT to fund 3 poorly conceived bus services costing $2mill per annum. All 3 services are poorly patronized and waste bus and driver resource. But there is another question, where is the $2.5m per annum that is being collected and not spent? Answer, sitting in Auckland Council Reserves. To add further misery to Rodney residents, the Council & AT covert this pot of money for their own ends in this period of reduced Council income.
To come back to the point of my post is to highlight that the Deputy Chair of Rodney Local Board, Beth Holebrooke, despite pretences to being representative of the Act Party, her actions shout Labour lite!

    This is an outstanding infrastructure plan and hits all the correct pressure points and doesn’t pander to any bicycle/electric trolley nonsense. It will work well in suburbia with the middle.

Had a call from Reid Research last night, one of the few times I’ve ever being polled.

In one question they showed the flaw with polling:

“In your view has the Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, performed Well or Poorly”.

I had to laugh on that one. It’s a very black and white question for something that is 50 shades of grey.

I did answer with the 80/20 rule.

80% of the time she has performed well, 20% of the time she has performed poorly.

But the 20% has impacted 80% of the country in the most negative ways.

A survivor from the Christchurch mosques massacre is reported to have taken part in celebrations in Turkey marking the transforming of the famous Hagia Sophia back into a mosque.

The Hagia Sophia, a UNESCO heritage site, was built as the Christian Cathedral of Constaninople in Byzantine times – between AD 532 and 537. For a thousand years it was the world’s largest Christian cathedral.

It was converted to a mosque after the fall of Byzantium to the Muslim Ottomans in 1453. In the secular Turkey after World War 1, the mosque was closed from 1931 to 1935, then reopened as a museum in 1935. According to Wikipedia, the Hagia Sophia was Turkey’s biggest tourist attraction in 2015 and 2019.

The Hagia Sophia has been converted back into a mosque by the Muslim fundamendalist government led by Recep Tayyip Erdogan despite protests from Orthodox Christian leaders, Pope Francis, America’s Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, the Greek Government, and Turkish secularists.

Thousands of Christian churches in Turkey have closed over the last 150 years, and the Christian minority has been reduced by millions until now only about 0.2 per cent of the population of 82 million is non-Muslim. Before World War 1, as many as 25 per cent of Turks were Christian or Jewish.

The Christchurch Star reports that a survivor of the Christchurch mosques massacre, Wasseim Alsati, posted on his Facebook page pictures of himself in Istanbul (Constantinople) waving a flag in celebrations by Muslims outside the Hagia Sophia to mark its return to being a mosque.

Mr Alsati and his four-year-old daughter were both wounded in the Christchurch mosques massacre, the Star says.

Because there are a number of toothed whale species that have either never ever been seen in the wild alive or only seen once/twice, yet they continue to exist and reproduce, as evidenced from the occasional find of a beached carcass.

I have a story for you.
It starts like a fairy tale, but it’s all true.
Once apon a time (yesterday).
I had to travel to Auckland to have my test equipment tested for it’s annual govt. certification.
When I arrived (7-30am) yes I traveled over night.
I asked to use the toilet, I was told “No, we are not allowed to let anyone onto our premises, due to our covid19 H&S policies”. This was ordered from senior management.

I had to walk 500m to the nearest Subway to use the toilet.
They charge $125 per hr for this certification.

Because of the obvious pro Labour media bias, I try to get my news from multiple sources. Stuff is one of those sources.

Occasionally Stuff allows for reader feedback, but not very often. What can we collectively do to force Stuff to be more “user friendly” and allow reader feedback?

Is there any mechanism where we can coerce Stuff to allow us to voice our opinions?

Any good ideas?
