  Exactly. Nothing wrong with changing that view based on new evidence but clearly wearing a mask makes, at best, a small difference. It’s gone from the balance of evidence to the contrary to now in favour. That’s a good reason to wear one in high risk environments but the public perception seems to be that it provides immunity which is both wrong and dangerous.

    The difference the sight of everyone in public wearing a muzzle makes is the imagery .Imagery of a pandemic , of fear , of death and pestilence that must be avoided.
    
    So wear a mask and join the cast of billions playing at the theatre of fear and govt diktat.

    Are you saying we only just in the last few months found out that masks help stop the spread of a virus? Even though medical experts reported the effectiveness of them even during the 1917 flu pandemic, we just didn’t know until the last few months?
    
    Or, is it that experts lower on the medical hierarchy didn’t actually know and were trusting the conclusions of higher ups, which means a handful of major organisations such as the WHO, who may or may not have agendas beyond just public heath, were controlling the global communication surrounding this?
    
    It seems national medical authorities of multiple western countries were previously downplaying masks, as the WHO was too. The moment the WHO changed their position, suddenly everyone else did.

  Who’s actually sneezing into a mask though? Everyone I’ve seen lifts it to sneeze, defeating the purpose.

  As I understand it, a mask does very little to protect you from any virus – because you will just breathe it in straight through.
  BUT! A mask greatly limits the spread of microdroplets going OUT. So a mask does reduce the chance that you will pass a virus on if you have it.
  A mask is worn to protect others, not yourself.

Using the tried and true hear-no-evil/see-no-evil/test-no-evil method New Zealand had 100+ days reportedly Covid free.

Then the dictatorship imposes house-arrest on Jafas and Covid not just reappears but explodes in Jafaville.

The rest of New Zealand, ignoring the imposed but farcial “level II” house arrest, remains unaffected.

Am I missing something here?

So now everyone expects compensation whenever the govt makes a decision that affects your life or business in a negative financial way (lockdowns, tourism handouts due to border closure etc) how come that dosent translate to the backbone of nz farming?

The govts proposals seriously financially affect a majority of farmers and inhibit them from full utillisation especially gentle rolling hill country that relies on winter crops.

wheres the subsidies? Wheres the support packages? Yup they wont come.

our farmers havent been subsidised for decades and its allowed them to become one of the most efficient in the world because of it, nz competes against highly subsidised countries yet we can still produce a superior product at a competive price.
this probably belongs in Deane Jessups thread from yesterday, but maybe its a time for rethink about subsidies and bailouts?

After all if a bunch of farmers can do it then surely most other businesses can.

        tourism will be bailed out constantly for probably best part of a decade untill its normal again, I dont view that short term and even 1-2yrs support is too long.
        sink or swim time, innovate and move with the times after all its part of “the new normal” theres the politicians hints that nothing will be the same again so addaption is needed to survive.
        
        Im guessing youre past work history influences youre view, ever owned a business, employed Ppl? Were you sucessfull and stand on your own 2 feet or did you rely on handouts or a trougher in the public sector and never achieved anything of great worth noting?

      But there is the proviso that the quality of the business should be considered before help is considered.
      It is a very sad fact that in the tourism industry there is and has been much subsidisation by local and central government already.
      Ratepayers/ taxpayers are contributing millions to this industry in many different ways ,
      Examples include :Councils Destination and event subsidies, America’s cups ,Film industry etc. etc.
      There is an opportunity now to get thIs industry to stand on its own feet and face reality in the market whatever that may be.

      Robbing Peter to pay Paul can mean Peter can not expand and achieve growth while Paul can and often does demand more and more subsidies.

The proverbial is about to hit the fan in the George Floyd case (the instigation of BLM riots) as his hospital admission blood results have been released. He died because his lungs filled up with fluid from the drug overdose. The coroner concluded “The memorandum ends with Dr. Baker’s devastating conclusion that “if Floyd had been found dead in his home (or anywhere else) and there were no other contributing factors he [Dr. Baker] would conclude that it was an overdose death.””
Hard to get a homicide conviction with that despite all the posturing from politicians.

    Mr Floyd effectively drowned because the drug overdose filled his lungs with fluid. That doesn’t happen in a neck press.
    The politically appointed DAs sought the uplift in sentences because of political pressure, not evidence. That is why the hospital blood results were suppressed for three months – it didn’t suit their polemics. I could also mention that the defence has asked for charges to be dropped because of that blood evidence.

    I read the actual autopsy report when it was first done. It was in the report that there was no evidence that there was compression on his throat that stopped his breathing. Amazingly it wasn’t reported by the media while whole lots of do gooders all around the world scream ‘Rassssssssissssssm’ at the police just doing their job.

      That wasn’t the original autopsy report. It was the addendum put out by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner after the families people looked at the documentation. Neither party had the results of hospital admission blood, only autopsy blood.
      “The Floyd’s family attorney had a re-autopsy performed by Dr. Michael Baden*, the former Chief Medical Examiner of New York City, and Dr. Allecia Wilson of the University of Michigan.
      
      In announcing the re-autopsy findings, Dr. Wilson stated that she and Dr. Baden “have seen accounts from the complaint and based on that, yes our findings do differ [from those of the Hennepin County Medical Examiner]. Some of the information that I read from that complaint states that there was no evidence of traumatic asphyxia. This is the point in which we do disagree. There is evidence in this case of mechanical or traumatic asphyxia.”
      However, Dr. Wilson conceded that they did not have access to toxicology results, tissue samples, or some organs, but added that those items “are not likely to change” the results of the re-autopsy.
      “The re-autopsy concluded that, even without physical evidence of traumatic asphyxia, such as broken bones in the neck, the compression on Floyd’s neck and chest still caused his death by depriving his brain of blood and oxygen and his lungs of air. Dr. Baden stated that the pressure was not visibly supported by autopsy because the pressure applied by the police had been released by the time the body was examined. ”
      So why did his lungs fill with fluid?

        Brian, the video is quite clear, Floyd was saying “I can’t breathe” well before he was restrained at all. It is clear that he believed that he was suffering from breathing problems almost certainly caused by his fentanyl overdose right at the start of his interaction.
        
        If anything the police are guilty of not treating him as a medical overdose problem, but Floyd did not act as if he was sufficiently ill to make that obvious. He was quite vigorous in his resistance to be arrested, unlike someone dying from insufficient oxygen.
        
        The restraint hold placed on him could not have caused the pulmonary oedema, thus was not responsible for his death.

    True, but unfortunately the approved restraint hold used was supposed to be kept in place to prevent someone going relaxed for a brief period then “erupting” into action again.
    
    If Floyd had been undrugged he might have realised that ceasing to resist arrest before being placed in a chokehold might have got him medical attention sooner. But he was not rational.

  Seems to me like they have pretty much said last week that Auckland is definitely going to level 2 tonight. I have had emails from schools and even our local vet saying what the new rules are from Monday under level 2!
  I think there would be a major backlash against Cindy if they decide to extend level 3

Is there anything that is hot news, that we know less about than the NBA strike.
For instance, how much real input have the players had in terms of personal costs?
Will any loss come out of the players pockets, and if so, how much will it be?

  I dont recall that maori had an education system pre colonisation let alone a higher education system, they should be thankfull theyre allowed to even access it but instead they insist on destroying a system thats not theirs and never was a part of them.

    FWIW: In that context (and over a decade ago), I, together with others in a UoW history lecture, were told by a senior Maori academic (No names), that ‘He wakes up EVERY morning determined to continue the war to defeat the Pakeha’. This to a class in which 98% of the participants were European! While certainly sincere, the irony of his statement (made in a ‘European’ institution which would never have existed under ‘Maori’ rule) was completely lost on the speaker. We all just listened, slightly appalled at what we had just heard.
    
    Marriage links me to that speaker’s tribal-group, and subsequent enquiries indicated that he was regarded within said group as being a bit of a nutter and motor-mouth , and that any similar statements that he might make should be taken with a very large container of salt…
    
    With that sort of ‘Management-condoned’ attitude circulating at higher levels within the institution, this recent outburst was only a matter of time in arriving, since if you can ‘dominate’ the curriculum, then it’s only a matter of time before the ‘Dominator/s’ start throwing their weight around, especially as ‘Racism’ is such a ‘Convenient’ and ‘Useful’ word and eminently ‘Suitable for the purpose’…
    
    Noticeably (and unusually), absolutely NO reference is made to the respective tribal origins of the ‘complainants’. Inter-tribal rivalries being what they are, one wonders if there is more than a touch of ‘envy’ involved…

  The problem is trying to reconcile Maori indigenous knowledge with Western science and Western academia. That’s futile: it’s trying to put a horse shoe on a cow.
  
  Maori knowledge, based on oral traditions, deserves to be based in tertiary institutions separate from universities, which are based on Western Culture.
  
  Isn’t that what the three wananga are for? Here’s what the New Zealand Qualifications Authority says about wananga:

  I raise this issue because TVNZ presented a fairly lengthy piece on the matter indicating that it has been bubbling away for 2 years or more… but there was no attempt to explain how relations had soured between Waikato Uni Management and The Maori Studies faculty.
  
  I went looking elsewhere (RNZ – Te Ao Maori) and publications of Prof Pou Temara (main spokesperson on the TVNZ piece) to try and find out more info…..but No Luck.

  I think the problem is over whether it does meet the criteria, whether and why the grant was pushed through by a politician whose party’s policies oppose such assistance and whether the funding might better have been allocated to State schools that need it.   The problem (I wouldn’t call it corruption) with the Green School getting construction funds is that it went totally against all the Green Party policies. I wouldn’t call the principles as I am yet to be convinced the Greens have any. There is a cap on other schools getting construction funds. The business case is wildly optimistic. It seems to have had no review.
  The case seems to have all the hallmarks of the Greens wanting to get into the distribution of taxpayers funds and not really caring what it was for. The fact that Mr Shaw has had to do a humiliating apology showed it was not thought through.

  2) Big spending “stimulus” and “infrastructure” projects get enacted.
  3) The criteria for these projects are decided.
  
  I’m looking at a “hammer ready” project at my house right now. But somehow the coin that I might have spent on it doesn’t count until it’s been forcibly extracted, combined with other people’s hard earned coin, filtered through a few layers of bureaucracy, and given to some well connected business who “meet the criteria”.

Seems the propaganda campaign surrounding the cannabis referendum has kicked off big time.
Last night on TV1 news there was a giggly puff piece from our Australian correspondent on the greatness of smoking dope.
Today in Stuff there is a letter written by 5 users (but definitely not “stoners” ) extolling the benefits of cannabis and using the good old “look over there” technique eg- one attacked alcohol as being much worse and another repeated misinformation regarding medical use of pain relief oils which I understand are already available.
Dope cool and good.
Tobacco dirty and bad.
Both generate smoke and health issues in a country where our socialist masters have decreed that we must be smoke free.

    W P, in my limited experience with the bad effects of canabis Its been a younger person that is a new user overindulging in the drug before getting accustomed to its effects at a higher level of consumption .
    It comes down to blind fear when the user comes face to face with sensations they aren’t familiar with and freaks out ,actually very few people have experienced total fear which is absolutely debilitating in most normal people,it can lead to rolling up in the foetal position when you should really be running as fast as you can.
    Many soldiers were shot in their trenches by their own side because of the absolute fear of going over the top.
    In my twenties I experienced this after taking acid and only more experienced friends stopped me from a freakout, after that I was very careful with any drugs and that one minor scare has kept me away from probably a lifetime of dabbling with drugs as a lot of those same friends are still doing, all good actually, to be fair I occasionally still have couple of puffs with mates now and then but I’d rather have a beer.

She was harping she is in favour of cannibis becoming legal here as she was filmed smoking a joint. An elderly woman living in a remote area growing dope and smoking it,isn’t someone living in reality. It’s all very well being able to live out in the sticks, smoking illegal drugs, selling it and products made from it…..and being on a benefit or pension where there are no jobs around anyway. There’s nothing wrong with a grant to a private school, a business, provided it achieves a purpose and the taxpayer shares in the rewards. Governments do this all the time. Private citizens do it all the time via charitable donations. The problem here is hypocrisy and a very uneven application of discretion. It smacks of special interests and looks very like corruption. And now Shane Jones is involved. But I’m repeating myself.

  This school is a privately owned/funded business, created by wealthy parents who have a son with special needs – and they can afford to establish it. BUT they are no doubt discovering that it is an expensive project, while being into doubt that it is a worthy project. (9 teachers for 43 children!)
  The stuff article cited the founder’s desire to provide ‘free’ places for less well-off but deserving children as a reason for applying for the grant.

    I imagine you are right that Shaw was played, though the Greens have a dichotomy over principle. Some (like Shaw) see the Greens as autonomous from state control, free and independent thinkers and all that. Others (like Bradford) see the state as the source of all succour.
    
    I don’t actually know the rules of shovel ready projects, though presumably they have to have some public purpose.
    
    I was simply pointing out that a private school receiving funds does not automatically scream corruption. There should be at least some pertinent fact to show that, otherwise it is just used as a term of abuse.

      Of course private schools should exist, and if there is funding support for capital works, I would support them applying. I believe they perform a valuable role.
      
      I also support charter schools, school choice and vouchers incidentally. The current education system demonstrably fails many kids.
      
      However, the issues are:
      1. The greens ahem “principles” – they oppose private schools, and charter schools, and school choice. So why would they demand funding for a private school?
      2. This particular school. Very new, no track record, virtually no students, and a very, very big grant.
      
      I learned that from just reading the media – you had the same access to media that I did. Why did you feel the need to leap in and defend this decision?
      
      The best answer is that it complied with the rules but was unwise (will be fun to see the official advice under the OIA to see if it did).
      
      The worst is that there was a target to spend money in the ‘Naki to try and offset the devastation of the oil and gas ban, and it didnt really matter what it was for, as long as it was spent (remarkably plausible for this incompetent government).
      
      Somewhere in the middle is the Greens seeing an opportunity for some nepotism, took full advantage of it.

Turns out there is.
Here’s a Research Paper/Survey on it.
‘11.7% of Republicans say they would not report their true opinions about their preferred presidential candidate on telephone polls.
In contrast, just 5.4% of Democrats say they’d be reluctant to share their true voting intentions — roughly half the number of Republicans reluctant to tell the truth on phone polls.
10.5% of Independents fell into the “shy voter” category, just a percentage point lower than how Republicans react to phone polls. ‘

Why aren’t our medics, front line staff and newly diagnosed people given the opportunity to use Hydroxychloroquine/Antibots/Zinc cocktail, mounting overseas evidence (besides Trump) are recommending it’s use as a treatment. If you can take it before day five of symptoms it allays the virus. Really good review on Outsider’s Encore on Friday night. (Probably on again this morning).

I wonder if Jacinda and co are taking it?!

    Scientific American long ago gave up the pretence of being scientific. Try reading up the Ford Foundation trial, over 25,000 patients in a double blind trial and the result was that HCQ reduced the need for hospitalisation by over 50%. And there are at least 3 subsequent trial results with similar findings. HCQ, applied early, is effective at reducing viral load and symptoms.
    
    It’s not a cure, but applied early it can help reduce the severity of symptoms and improves outcomes. It can’t be given to everyone as there are disqualifying conditions (Eg heart arrhythmias) and it doesn’t provide the same benefits if the patient already has severe symptoms.
    
    To ignore this is a gross dereliction medical ethics, it is placing political correctness above the health and well being of people.

A great 30-minute Kim Hill interview with Greg Newbold yesterday is well worth listening to (link below).

Experiencing alcohol’s destruction of his mother, Greg argues booze is worse than marijuana. He warns from experience though, of the danger of heroin, and of methamphetamine.

Greg’s been a sane, informed, public voice on prisons and punishment. He knows the system from the inside: he turned his life around when he served a term for selling heroin.

Greg’s done the country a service with his work on prisons, and with his sound media commentary for years – giving the inside story as it were. He’s been reporters’ go-to man for commentary on prisons, and the country’s been fortunate for that.

Greg’s headed to retirement in the sunnier Bay of Plenty. His sane views on justice and prisons will be missed. We hope you enjoy the fishing and the sun, Greg.

Low interest rates. Population growth through net migration, though with a temporary dip. Construction slowing, maybe a lot. Banks tightening up on lending with increased scrutiny of applicant finances.

Join the dots. Might come up with increased shortages, construction sector lay offs, house prices and rents rising, more social housing costs paid by the shrinking number of net taxpayers.

The Iwi is entitled to do this. It is their land. But they are causing severe hardship to the occupants of some of these properties for no other reason than conflict with Iwi values and “climate change”.

Now imagine the media reaction if a white land owner in South Auckland decided to demolish the homes of 32 Maori tenants and told the media that the houses of the Maori tenants “conflicted with his values”. That’s right all hell would descend. The government would be pressured into buying the property.

I emphasise that the Iwi should be able to do this. I respect property rights. But that respect is not afforded by Maori. It is blatantly one sided.

    It would be interesting to see what would happen if the owners of the baches just clubbed together and decided to ignore to leave. In that case I think the Iwi would double down and use the courts and the police to forcibly remove the occupiers. They would then demolish the buildings and use the courts to recover costs to the extent possible.
    
    Of course they are entitled to do that. But as we saw in that disgraceful episode with the Fletchers housing development in Auckland, respect for property rights is all one sided.

Official report released by the Kenosha police. The media was confusing the details. Even I didn’t know whether Jacob Blake had a knife in his hand when confronting officers. Apparently he definitely DID.

Here’s a link to the official report.

Here are the actual and undisputed facts:
• The officers were dispatched to the location due to a complaint that Mr. Blake was
attempting to steal the caller’s keys/vehicle.
• Officers were aware of Mr. Blake’s open warrant for felony sexual assault (3rd degree) before they arrived on scene.
• Mr. Blake was not breaking up a fight between two females when officers arrived on scene.
• The silver SUV seen in the widely circulated video was not Mr. Blake’s vehicle.
• Mr. Blake was not unarmed. He was armed with a knife. The officers did not see the knife initially. The officers first saw him holding the knife while they were on the passenger side of the vehicle. The “main” video circulating on the internet shows Mr. Blake with the knife in his left hand when he rounds the front of the car. The officers issued repeated commands for Mr. Blake to drop the knife. He did not comply.
• The officers initially tried to speak with Mr. Blake, but he was uncooperative.
• The officers then began issuing verbal commands to Mr. Blake, but he was non-complaint.
• The officers next went “hands-on” with Mr. Blake, so as to gain compliance and control.
• Mr. Blake actively resisted the officers’ attempt to gain compliance.
• The officers then disengaged and drew their tasers, issuing commands to Mr. Blake that he would be tased if he did not comply.
• Based on his non-compliance, one officer tased Mr. Blake. The taser did not incapacitate Mr. Blake.
• The officers once more went “hands-on” with Mr. Blake; again, trying to gain control of the escalating situation.
• Mr. Blake forcefully fought with the officers, including putting one of the officers in a headlock.
• A second taser (from a different officer than had deployed the initial taser) was then deployed on Mr. Blake. It did not appear to have any impact on him.
• Based on the inability to gain compliance and control after using verbal, physical and less lethal means, the officers drew their firearms.
• Mr. Blake continued to ignore the officers’ commands, even with the threat of lethal force now present.

It seems like they did everything right, to me, although a case can be made that they fired an awful lot of rounds.

  Once they start firing, I think that the doctrine is that you continue until the target ceases to be able to respond. Heavily drugged people can still function with extremely serious wounds and be a danger.
  
  That does seem a bit callous and almost designed to kill, but it has been based on experiences. But seven shots to the back and the victim is not dead though he may be partially paralysed ?

Interesting to see the spend on motors for the homeless in Rotorua was $5m for 3 months and the spend in all areas has gone up significantly in the last quarter. You could build a lot of houses for that money and seems a coincidence this is happening coming up to an election!

I remember when

Surely we must by now be able to assess the most dangerous areas for risk of getting covid-19?
Surely the MOH can produce a short list of the most dangerous activities.
Is it dangerous for people be allowed to be outdoors in numbers, and if so, in what situations?
Give us a list of the pros and cons of masks, so that an educated course of action is followed.
Restrict Levels to the areas that need them.

If commentator-economist Tony Alexander is right, New Zealanders can expect a continuing dive in our GDP per capita as population soars. That is, a fall relative to the GDP per capita of other developed countries. NZ is already behind Britain, and well behind Australia.

This is from Alexander’s Stuff commentary forecasting demand for housing will stay strong. He notes that average rate of population growth for each year leading into 1990 was 0.7 per cent, rising to 1.1 per cent each year to 2000, 1.2 per cent each year to 2010, and 1.5 per cent p.a. the past ten years on average.

“This past year growth was 2.1 per cent, courtesy of a record net migration gain of almost 80,000 people,” Alexander says, then adds:

Population growth will slow tremendously in the coming year, then recover when the borders eventually reopen.

It seems reasonable in the circumstances to expect that after some ups and downs when the borders open, the net migration gain will settle back at the recent high level of the past decade, and that firm population growth will keep housing demand growing strongly.

Hipkins saying the govt will plough ahead with Auckland going down to Level 2 tonight, but it will be more like Level 2.5.

He said Alert Level 2 would be more like level 2.5, with mandatory masks on public transport and limits on social gatherings

What a fiendishly clever plot it has been.
By simply raising the Rest of New Zealand to Level 2, and needlessly punishing the other 3.5 million for two weeks, we can now allow Aucklanders to travel anywhere without a checkpoint.
Now if any cases spread outside Auckland, because of this action, we are able to instantly raise that region to Level 3.

Peter Dutton seems comfortable with a deal on Tarrant, thinks happy to take Tarrant and step up export of crims in return. Last week was huge, over 200 of these, just 30 to NZ. He did talk about the option of Tarrant serves out sentence in Australia, all Kiwi’s serving a prison sentence in Aus, finish it in NZ.
Jacinda would see the tailend of Tarrant but may hoist a heap of crims long before they would be deported.

NZH: “Covid 19 coronavirus: ‘Incredibly angry’: PM Jacinda Ardern fumes over ‘wrong’ Government message about tests for south, west Aucklanders”

Hang on! Didn’t the health officials say a few days ago that they want to ramp up testing to 10,000 a day? And isn’t it prudent to test for asymptomatic cases etc?

Seeing we know that everything Ardern says is scripted, how come the “strong language” like “incredibly angry” and “wrong” and “badly” (in the article)?

So is she throwing Health Officials under the bus to pacify say the likes of the Maori/Pasifika community (and her own MP’s) unhappy with the health officials targeting important resources to test vulnerable and potentially high risk areas?

If so, but what if the virus takes hold and spreads? How will she explain she stopped her own Health Officials from trying to deal with the problem “hard and fast”, instead kicking it down the road to become a “problem for another day”?

Is this “good leadership” or simply more CoL incompetence (and self-preservation politicking)?

PMs press conference didn’t answer the most important question: Why are they moving Auckland down from Level 3 and allowing much more social contact, when the number of cases per day has not much declined for nearly 3 weeks? Ardern kept appealing to the general design of the covid level system, but she (or the Health Minister) should have been pressed on the specific evidence behind her decision.

Bravo, bravo. What a brave decision to drop Auckland down to 2.9. All those in public service better watch out. The Princess is “angry“. You’ll be called out if you even one millimeter out of step. Best for all government department to go into freeze mode. That way, you can’t be blamed for anything because nothing can go wrong.

We got invited to a friends place for dinner along with a number of other people whom we hadn’t met before.
Later in the evening, i snuck out to the kitchen to see if they had any cutlery worth taking. And here’s this bloody woman, with her head up the Rangehood, smoking!

Would never get invited to our home.

Can we put a list down showing how many times Jacinda blames others for herself and Labours incompetence, today was the wrong information on testing which she blamed those in the Ministry of health but then didn’t remove it herself and left it there for a day without having it removed. The only thing she is good at is lying and blaming others for her and Labours incompetence.
