      Is it? I thought the traditional Māori name for the North Island was Te Ika a Maui (the fish of Maui) and that Aotearoa is more of a mythical name, supposedly invoked by the also mythical navigator Kupe, but never actually in common parlance before European settlement.

      Genuine question:
      
      If, to Maori, ancient legend (as I recall from school) has it that the South Island is a “canoe” (due to its shape) and the North Island was caught by Maui when he was fishing, how could they possibly have known that the SI was in fact canoe-shaped, without first having access to a European cartographer’s accurate map of the land masses? They had no writing, so I doubt they could produce a map, which would be an even more advanced technical exercise.

    (literally, ao = cloud, tea = white, pale, roa = long). This could be translated as (the) long white cloud. It does not mean “Land of the Long White Cloud”. In Māori that would be Te Whenua o Aotearoa.
    
    As with many Māori place names, the context from which the name derives is important. Traditional accounts suggest that Hine-te-aparangi, wife of well known pacific navigator/explorer Kupe, after a long ocean going voyage, sighted a particular cloud aotea that usually indicates the presence of land. The term roa can also indicate a length of time. Thus, a more accurate translation could be ‘It has been a long time since seeing a cloud that indicates land’.
    
    Aotearoa is commonly given as the Māori name for New Zealand. Before the arrival of Europeans to the New Zealand, it probably only referred to the Te Ika a Maui (i.e., the North Island).

      Words evolve their meaning. Aotearoa now means New Zealand. The National Anthem has Aotearoa in the Maori verse which is good enough for me. Anyway a nice simple word like Aotearoa is much better than that complicated business about the fish and the canoe which I can never remember properly. Aotearoa beats “Te fish o Maui” any day.

PM Jacinda Ardern has this morning apologized for a wrong message which urged all 750,000 South and West Aucklanders to get a Covid test. But after a day of trying to blame all but herself people surely must be sick of her excuses by now. When you go hard and fast and tell the world how good you are without a plan there will always be fuckups, so Jacinda own your mistakes instead of making excuses and blaming others because NZ is sick of listening to your excuse.

    Agreed. Going “early” would have meant securing the boarders late January when this thing started to go international (at which point it was only ever a case of when, not if).
    
    And going hard would have meant ACTUALLY securing the boarders instead of this “are you feeling unwell – here’s a pamphlet – we trust you to do the right thing and self-isolate” rubbish.
    
    If thay had actually “gone early” and “gone hard” then tourism would still have been stuffed, but we would have avoided the lockdowns … and most of the horrific cost that came with them.

  Mixed messages indeed: she tells us in the same sentence that we *must* wear masks in public transport, *should* wear them in shops and malls and *basically should* wear them whenever we leave the house!!
  
  It is absolutely outrageous: even if one had an actually functional mask, wearing it when outside in fresh air and not near other people would be an idiocy.
  
  Is she thinking of people opening the door and immediately being surrounded by close contacts?
  
  I’m actually not against using functional masks in close contact areas, because many Asian countries seem to have good results from it. But it should not be compulsory and there should be no encouragement to ruin one’s walk with fresh air in quiet streets and parks.

genuine question, when is the spread of a “cluster” no longer a cluster?
Imo its already beyond that as Id define a cluster as infection all stemming from 1 source or gathering.

currently to meet the cluster criteria you could have caught it via sams uncle who delivered a pizza to susan who babysat marthas kids who visited jim and kaths last week that had a coffee with mitch who sat next to a random on a bus that caught covid 8th hand from other interactions.
its madness, surely by 2nd or 3rd generation of transmission its considered general community transmission.

the desperation to lump them all under 1 umbrella term is getting thin, I hope it spreads throughout nz and the media call them out on their definitions as no doubt theyll all be refered to the original cluster.

    I happened upon the demo in Britomart Square last week Dave, it was to a degree as you say.
    
    Though I did think it was all rather lovely in a very Kiwi way, with the crowd singing Bob Marley’s “One Love” then the NZ National Anthem at the end, before the police politely asked everyone to leave and they did. In my estimation there were about 300 people. No-one got arrested, no windows were broken, no-one got hurt.
    
    This Saturday’s march was a bit different. In my estimation there was about 1,500 people in Aotea Square and the vast majority were those who’d lost their jobs or had lost their businesses. Everyone I spoke to was united behind the idea that lockdowns were economically damaging and an unjustifiable erosion of civil liberties.
    
    Three other observations I’d like to make:
    
    1. The demographics of the crowd this weekend in my estimation would be 60% Caucasian, 40% Maori/Pacifika, 0% South Asian, 0% East Asian, 0% African. I meandered along with a group of Polynesian lads who were walking their dogs and playing some really great Reggae on a boombox they bought with them.
    
    2. There were a few Maori sovereignty flags and an older Caucasian couple each had the 1934 “United Tribes” NZ flag (which they called the “our real flag, the pre-Treaty of Waitangi flag.”) The only flag which offended me was the lady with the American flag – I think she’s an idiot, and doesn’t realise she does her cause no favours at all by associating an NZ issue with the U.S.
    
    3. The little girl (five years old perhaps?) with the sign that read “I really miss my Grandparents” was heartwrenching.

      Oh thanks for the excellent report, oob! I’m glad for them that they’re getting their numbers up…. but I think they need to attract some more heavyweight speakers/supporters before they’ll be taken more seriously.
      
      I share your opinion about the woman with the American flag, and I also had a good talk with various business people who were obviously hurting financially – so in many respects we had similar experiences.
      
      If the commenter here called Rodney Hide really IS Rodney Hide, then hopefully he’s reading this and might care to join and impart some real energy and verve to the next march? Come in Rodney…. knock knock….?!?

  I did hear it, but the dates are all a blur now. Auckland went into Lockdown 3 on 12 August (for 3 days to get a grip on the outbreak).       I fear that you may be being a bit optimistic.
      There have been a number of cases overseas where someone has recovered from the disease and then caught it again.
      If the period of immunity from catching it again is short enough it would seem that we cannot expect to get a useful vaccine.
      If you had a vaccine that only protected you for a month say we wouldn’t have any practical protection at all would we?

        The confirmed re-infections are all within 3-6 months. The good news is that without exception, the re-infections have been reported as a-symptomatic, or very mild. I have an injections for something else every 3 months, its not a big deal… one just has to remember the date (I always use my VISA so can look it up) to maintain continuous therapy.

      That’s a bit like arguing that “I drive a super safe car – so why should I be required to follow the speed limit”.
      
      In theory the odds of you transmitting or catching the virus again are low (but not zero; some have got it a 2nd time – and in other cases testing hasn’t been solid), but in practice, not wearing one will waste a disproportionate amount of enforcement resources in addition to causing both angst and noncompliance from those who think “hey – that person isn’t wearing a mask then why should I?” (Not knowing your personal circumstances).
      
      So just wear the damn mask. Think of it as “taking one for your idiotic team members if you like”.

      The illogic of the pro-mask argument is stark:
      
      If they are effective, then wearing one will prevent a user’s transmission as much as contraction.
      
      If a wearer is actually protecting themselves and others, then why is it an issue for such a wearer if someone in their vicinity is not similarly muzzled?

Yesterday, those of us with time 5o spare, and foolish enough wasted 15 minutes at 1lm to watch/listen to the worst piece of political propaganda show & tell any of us will have witnessed in our lifetimes. I am now in my late 50s, so it has been some 52 years since I last had to witness show & tell time. But yesterday I was witness to a shambles mascrading as a prime ministerial broadcast, supposedly providing public information.

The broadcast was riddled with half truths bordering on being lies.

Lie 1.
The reported number of cases were 2. First up, anyone who has done a Covid test (I had to have one on Saturday) knows it takes upto 3 working days for the results to come back – so yesterday’s 2, were tests probably taken on Wednesday or Thursday. When the govt, Bloomfield & co were complaining (with great concern) testing numbers were falling. Further compounding the problem of the Auckland clusters was that 1 of the cases was in Tokoroa (a health worker – probably at the aged care facility the original 4 visited). Given testing in the South Waikato/BoP has been scaled back, do authorities really know the extent of the number of cases in the South Waikato/BoP? Probably not. If anything the lack of positive cases reflects the lack of testing.

Lie 2.
The long tail of the cluster, reflects 2 things, these being:
1. the spread of the virus; and
2. NZ’s poor contact tracing regime. This was pointed by Shaun Hendy in yesterday’s media, in that modelling was suggesting that the authorities are not getting to the edges of the cluster and therefore not getting ahead of it. If they were, the 2 cases yesterday would have been identified a week ago.

Lie 3.
The cluster is confined to Auckland.
Yesterday showed it isn’t, so how many people further south are being treated for flu, rather than Covid because they are outside Aucklan and are not being tested?

Lie 4
Wearing masks makes us safe.
Masks stop the droplets spreading in the air when you sneeze, nothing more. If the virus is airborne in an area, you can still breathe it in via a mask.

Lie 5.
The testing of people in South & West Auckland, while it was a silly & poorly worded post. The general message to people living in those areas of Auckland was correct. Generally, because of those who have contracted Covid in this outbreak live and associate from those areas, it is logical messaging should be targeted at residents in those areas.

Lie 6
Telling Aucklanders how well they are doing obeying the L3 lockdown. They weren’t and they aren’t. As I wrote above, I had to see a doctor on Saturday at Red Beach. I ended up taking a Covid test. During the course of our conversation the doctor and i agreed, that it was hard to believe we were in the middle of a L3 pandemic emergency lockdown. This reflected the volume of people mingling (not keeping social distancing), socialising, and shopping only a few kilometres away in Orewa that both he and I had seen a route to the medical facility. Auckland’s lockdown confined Aucklanders and nothing more.

So, my questions are:
1. when is the subjecting Kiwis to the political bs about a public health problem going to stop?; and
2. When are we going to get political leadership that will truly seek to find a way forward from this contrived emergency?

  Covid-19 is a corona virus, and is in the set of corona viruses. Corona viruses are a subset of the flu. So its not surprising that there are deaths from Covid-19, since this is the dominating flu variant this year.
  
  What is surprising is that the ‘normal’ non corona viruses flu variants dropped to a similar extent during the upsurge in Covid-19.

    BCV’s are not a “subset of the flu” as you put it. They are a separate family of viruses. One variety of BCV causes approximately 30% of colds, but it is not closely related to influenza.
    
    The flu virus is especially problematic as its structure is that of a series of sub-units that encode differing functional parts. These units can be swapped between individual viruses and create immediately potentially viable variations. The most common marker sub-units are the H and N units, hence the nomenclature you see of H1N1 etc for flu.
    
    BCV’s do not have functional subunits, they have a single large RNA strand, and hence cannot mutate in the same way as the flu. Each variation has to occur as an random initial mutation that is then subject to selection; and almost all functional variations are worse than the original. So BCV’s mutate much slower than Flu and so represent a much better vaccine target. That said, they do mutate, and it does appear that a newer version is now the dominant spreading version, it spreads better, but is less serious in its effects. Whether this change in the S (spike) protein will affect current vaccine testing is not yet known for sure, but it appears not to.

Oh dear. In the space of four days, Labour’s New Plymouth candidate has given two very different answers to different audiences. That’s slightly inconsistent, don’t you think?

In 2008, New Plymouth was New Zealand’s most marginal electorate. It was much safer for National MP Jonathan Young in 2011 when he beat Labour’s Andrew Little by around 5000, and became a National fortress in 2014 when Young extended his majority over Little to almost 10,000 votes.

Now in 2020, Labour seems to have selected a candidate who either can’t make up his mind, or even worse, who tells different stories to different groups of people, hoping he won’t get found out.

He then proceeded to point to a sign outside a Chemist shop advertising re-usable masks. At that point, I wished I was about 4 or 5 years younger. Arrogant bastard.       IC5000 is correct, when East Pakistan (Bangladesh) wanted independence, there was the obligatory war with West Pakistan (Pakistan) that killed a few people (travellers) on the road to independence.
      
      The irony of independent Bangladesh, is that it relies heavily of export income selling cheap clothing to mega big corporations in the same European countries the lady is decrying. Equally, the works survive on poor wages and work in sweatshop factories which do not recognise accepted Westerner worker rights.

      The original British colonial blue print was used in Ireland where they imported Scots into Ulster to form a garrison colony to ensure the natives were kept in line. Obviously the Brits couldn’t do this to the majority of their colonies and they had to pay for themselves so the strategy was to choose a particular tribe or group to rule as a divide and conquer strategy with the British appointing a political officer to make the real decisions. This enabled that group to dominate the military, police and bureaucracy and so when decolonisation occurred in the 50s and 70s that particular group was well placed to assume rule.
      
      So the answer in fact yes.

  Personally, as soon as I see claims such as “White supremacy is in the very foundations of New Zealand, so this is part of us” and “White supremacy formed the basis of colonial conquest”, I just switch off. I don’t know how far back these people want to go in their attempts to apportion guilt, but surely at some stage even they must recognise that the people of today have very little connection with events that occurred well before they, or their parents, or even their grandparents, were born.
  
  The treaty of Waitangi was signed in 1840 – that’s 180 years ago.
  
  The NZ Land Wars were fought between the 1840s and the 1870s – 150 years ago.
  
  My parents migrated to NZ from England in the 1960s – 60 years ago. The events that took place 130 years or more before they even arrived here quite simply are not their fault. And nor are they mine.
  
  I feel sorry, angry and disturbed when a report of a racist incident comes out. Racial slurs and the like have no place in a decent society, but these are mean-spirited individuals perpetrating these acts. Most New Zealanders simply don’t do such things.
  
  As Ms Bashir herself writes, her own father said: “I realised today we forget sometimes that most people are essentially good.”
  
  I’m really sorry that Ms Bashir can’t recognise that in her fellow New Zealanders.

Spin and distortion on the NZ Herald web site, which boasts it’s “web site of the year”. Perhaps I’m naive to be surprised.

Reporting on Maori and Pacific Islander entry to the Medical School at Otago University the Herald discusses suggested “capping the Maori Entry Pathway to 56 students and the Pacific Entry Pathway to just 20 students.”

The Herald doesn’t mention that the scheme allows Maori and Pacific Islander students to enter the school on lower marks than those required of other students. The Herald thus by omission implies Maori and Islanders are being discriminated against, which is a lie.

The article also says:

The discussion document has prompted concern among student body presidents who say the proposed caps are not enough to transform a predominantly Pakeha health workforce.

To reflect New Zealand’s population the medical work force would be predominantly white. The proportion of non-whites in New Zealand will have increased since the 2013 census when 74 per cent of the population identified as European.

But many, even most, of the new citizens and residents will be Asians. They gain entry to the Medical School on the same basis as ethnic Europeans. There is no lower-marks entry for them.

  I’ve seen lots of reports out of the States recently that the ‘Asian’ communities (Indian, Chinese, Taiwanese, Japanese, Hong Kongers, Koreans, Singaporeans etc etc) are most pissed off because they’re getting hammered by the discriminatory entry policies of the Ivy league universities – they’d piss in on their entrance exams, college marks etc but are denied entry to make way for Black and Latino students who have lower marks.

My partners got no wuzzies about the silly new speeding limits.
All he’s ever done is to employ the ‘Tuning Fork’ defense.
Just write in querying the ticket, denying you were speeding. Ask that the Ticketing Officer provide On Oath, written confirmation that the Radar he was equipped with had been calibrated with a Tuning Fork, both at the start and end of their shift.
Don’t expect to hear back on that in a hurry. All you’ll get is a letter from Police HQ issuing you a reminder that ‘speed kills’, but on this occasion the matter will be overlooked.

Very sad news Victoria is reporting 41 deaths from Covid 19. 22 unrecorded deaths have been found which are definitely attributed to Aged Care Facilities and another 19 yesterday most of which will be.

Victoria went into Lock down on the 9th July which according to my abacus is 53 days a go and the state of disaster with curfews was initiated 29 days ago.

77% of all deaths are attributed to A.C.F.

I have followed this story since the 9th July and its now less about looking at whether Policy works and much more about thinking about the families and friends of the 951 poor souls who are active cases in ACF. The survival rate is 53% up from 10% a few weeks ago so their is hope.

I met a nurse who works in an acute dementia unit in Nelson a few weeks ago. Her observation was fairly straight forward if it gets in her facility very few will survive.

The moral of Victoria is simple. You can Lockdown all you like but if you don’t protect ACF you will not save lives in the one community it is most prevalent.

Still 7 weeks to the election. That is a minimum 4 rounds of COVID if people develop symptoms on day 12. Jacinda is right about it being a COVID election, as by then we will have had either weeks of no community transmission or one huge cluster***k with no chance of putting the tricky virus back in the bottle.

  I don’t understand why Gates gets so much stick. He is a genuine intelligent and dedicated techno-philanthropist, trying to (with notable successes) make the world a better place though innovation and chasing low-hanging fruit wherever he can find it, leveraging his reputation and connections to do so. The world is immensely enriched by his existence, and we would be lucky if more enlightened and altruistic billionaires were to emulate him.
