There is no legal framework to hold him in Australia and if he was deported they’d have to let him go.

  Currently no, but Scott Morrison is open to sorting out treaty that would allow criminals in NZ/Aus to be deported back to Aus/NZ and still serve out there time.
  
  And while I suspect that will solve the problem of the Eco-Fascist, Aus has way more Kiwi crims they would happily send back under such an agreement.

  NZ could deport him after he has done a bit of time to fulfil ‘denunciation’. It would require special legislation on NZ’s part (unless there is a mechanism where Ministers can release him early). Australia can then either accept that he will walk free in Australia or enact special legislation to detain him. Risk here is Australia may retaliate by removing Kiwis’ special immigration status in Australia.

  The Islamic Womens Community of New Zealand has pre-maturely released their contribution to the Royal Commission Inquiry into the Christchurch Mosque Massacres with the general gist of it being that they indeed Were Not Us, or, at least have not been treated as such, although many of their comments relate to times when Tarrant was not even in New Zealand.
  
  However, any account that contributes an understanding of why and where Tarrant was radicalised, or why – when he intended to train here for his heinous crime but perform it elsewhere – he changed his mind on its location, and chose New Zealand, could influence his deserving return to Australia.
  So perhaps any consideration of that should be after the rest of the Commission’s material is officially released. Rather than another impulsive, intuitive Captain’s Call be made.

    Here’s a thought: rather than the bogeyman of “radical right-wing websites” and the like, is it possible that politicians like Andrew Little with his hate speech laws, the Leftist intolerant-of-any-dissent side of the political fence generally, or the accusatory pronouncements of groups like The Islamic Women’s Community of New Zealand are what radicalise people like Brenton Tarrant.   One consideration is that Australia has several people imprisoned for life without parole so they have the facilities. From a purely economic viewpoint better to bung these terminally bad people together in the one facility than essentially create a new environment. How about a contract between NZ and Australia to provide the LWOP facilities needed for both countries. Alternatively ship them all to somewhere really appealing like North Vietnam under a similar contract for services?

        He is constrained in terms of what he can do on a state level vis a vis the mob disruption. And FEC can demand information on spending (too little, or too much charged) anytime it likes.       the visit came a couple days after criticising the ptpm jetting to the islands, he posted a horses chaff bag with comments along the lines of hope she dosent go hungry. he was mates with quite a few cops that see what he posts so dont know if someone complained or they took it upon themselves to tell him to tone it down.
      
      Know another guy here also got a nasty visit, posted “im not handing in any banned firearms” was a piss take as he didnt own any newly prohibited guns but a couple weeks later 3 cops threatening alsorts rocked up at his door and searched the house.
      dumb thing to post I know but when people openly advertise and sell drugs on the platform and police claim theyre powerless to act I find it strange they can do so for thought crimes and dumbass comments

      Half of Australians have a parent born overseas so they are necessarily of convict extraction. I’ve noticed Anglo Australians tend to have a more black and white view of morality than your woggy type being Greek, Italian or Lebanese who simply pays lip service to the rules and does their own thing. I’d put it down to their parents having to scrabble hard to make a living in more entrepreneurial areas than large corporates where following the rules would get you somewhere. Probably a bit different in regional areas like QLD where they vote for sleazy so called law and order candidates like Christiansen

Listening to advocates its very disapointing the language used. They all say that these people “deserve” it, um no they dont they may “need” it but no one deserves handouts of taxpayer money.

these clowns that think this is a good idea obviously havent heard of austerity, they better read up on it because its fast becoming part of their future if the govt keeps throwing cash around and wastefull spending.

      I will do something similar next year. The few weeks I will receive of it this year since turning 65 in July will help my address some of the holes in my personal finances , a residue of a pretty volatile last three years.
      
      I could opt out, but I figure it’s better to donate to a charity I support and trust than to simply allow the Government to spend it for me.

  Doubtful. Ardern has all their votes locked up. Hell, I know plenty of regular middle class folks, many self-employed, who are voting Labour for the first time simply because of Ardern. A couple of stores in the main street have “Thanks Jacinda” art in their windows.
  
  When supposedly safe National voters are beguiled by Ardern’s performance you know she’s a shoe-in. Reality or future plans don’t come into it.

  Austerity for the elderly without heating can mean hospitalisation or death. For the younger it means missing work or sub par performance. Seasonal affective disorder is community wide and closes down many each year. If that can be combatted as happened to me this year economic production and savings in health costs may give a rich reward. If the mood of the winter community can be raised that may bring gains well beyond the cost.

There seems to be this ongoing narrative that New Zealanders are flocking back home due to how well we have handled the Covid-19 pandemic. For example, Stuart Nash on NewstalkZB with Hosking yesterday:

Interesting to see official Customs Passenger Statics show a different picture. Here are monthly net arrivals March-August 2020:

So people are still pouring out of New Zealand. Obviously, there would have been a lot of visitors initially returning home, but considering New Zealand has had net migration figures of around +$50,000 a year for the previous couple of years, this seems to be a significant exodus.

  Interesting figures.
  
  Basically no-one other than returning New Zealanders have been able to come into the country since March. So the outflow represents tourists and short term work visa holders leaving the country. Therefore the big outflow in March and April will be short stay tourists leaving. In addition there are a significant number of young overseas people here on temporary work/travel visas. Many of them will have been working in hospitality (most waiters used to be young overseas people). They will have qualified for the wage subsidy, but will have now lost their jobs and will therefore be leaving. That probably accounts for the July surge. For instance, I don’t see so many foreign wait staff any more.
  
  Will we get to a point where there is a net inflow? I reckon we will. Once all the short term work visa people (as opposed to the longer term work visa people) have left, I suspect we will see returning New Zealanders out number those leaving. Maybe within a couple of months.
  
  We are told that around 3,000 New Zealanders are coming in each week. I imagine the biggest group are young OE travellers returning, no doubt mostly going back to live with parents. Some will get jobs, some will do more study, some will get the benefit. I suspect the next big group will be people returning from Australia who have lost their jobs. They will put quite a lot of pressure on house rentals (virtually none can afford to buy a house). Many, if not most, will be going straight onto unemployment benefits. There will be a smaller group of well heeled New Zealanders returning. Will they make a noticeable difference to our economic prospects? Maybe, though it will depend on how many are in this category.

same would happen here with the 50k, councils will find a way to soak up 20k of it and tradies will soak up the rest with the end result most likely even more unaffordable housing.

  Unfortunately our building industry was virtually at capacity prior to the 2017 election and has remained there since, apart from the covid con timeout.
  
  So we have a conundrum, we need to import import builders to build the houses they need to live in so they can build the housing we need.
  
  The other issue is that many of those builders aren’t certified or certifiable so need a time lag before they are up to spec.
  
  Does anyone in their right mind truly believe there is anyone within the coalition capable of solving that issue?

  If we are serious about affordable homes we need to fix the RMA and stop a lot of the needless ticket clipping by councils. We also need to consider opening up large parcels of land. If we decide we don’t want to do that we have chosen higher house prices. The building industry would struggle to scale without these changes and without security against movements like Ihumato

    No offence intended Mike22240, but people, especially out in the provinces, have been begging for the RMA madness to be addressed for years and years – with little success.
    It was too hard for the previous National Government who blamed Winston Peters for not supporting change- and so nothing happened.
    Local body councils (“ticket clippers” as you describe them) have to put into practice all the RMA requirements foisted on them by central government via the RMA. They have to employ more and more staff and pay them big money to do it – so ever increasing consent bills and rate hikes.
    And it continues: a talkback radio programme the other day (Kerre on newstalkzb) addressed the impact of the new freshwater regulations. A man rang up from down south and said the Otago Regional Council will have to triple its consenting staff to implement and monitor all the new rules.
    Labour love rules and and regulations.
    There will be more to appease the “environmental” activists who protest but don’t work or pay for their demands.
    Councils and ratepayers are the ones who pay.
    Protesting is easy -and cheap.

  This is one reflection of our country’s decline under the super-fast population growth strategy of the last five or so years.
  
  Diving relative GDP per capita is the measure as soaring population (the fastest in these rich countries) sinks us into the Third World. We’re already behind the UK, and well behind Australia.

  It is being reported in the Horrid that TVNZ has been overtaken by YouTube as Kiwis main source of news. I appreciate that says many things about the sheeple (they might as well watch TikTok).
  
  But if I take yesterday as a for instance of you don’t watch TVNZ for news, it is the clear and blatant editorial filtering processes they are resorting to in favour of the government.
  
  Two news items in yesterday’s media were:
  1. The primary care nurses strike; and
  2. The failure to test frontline border workers for Covid. This was reported in all private news sources but not TVNZ.
  
  For a while now we have moaned about media bias, but TVNZ’s filtering of bad news stories about the CoL is probably a good reason why people are turning to other sources. Then you add in the shameful pro-govt plugs, it doesn’t take much to work out why most Kiwis are ill informed.

I see another National hit job on Stuff through their ‘Munted’ articles on the earthquakes 10-year anniversary.
Yesterday they had a go through the Anglican minister who was a very noisy activist against anything National/Jerry did, ably assisted by motor-mouth Megan Woods. Ask him now how things ate going with EQC under Woods and Robertson and he is very quiet – go figure.
Today they bring out Tony Simpson, ex principal of Phillipstown School, to have a go at John Key and Hekia Parata over the school reforms post the earthquakes. No mention of the re-distribution of the population in Christchurch and the many new schools built by National to accommodate those moving or the modernisation/update of other schools damaged.
Stuff are a disgrace, as they have completely abandoned any sense of objectivity or balance in their articles and the sooner they go completely broke the better.

  I know this is a lefty attitude, but anything to help rid the country of Stuff and its adherents, can only be for the good of us all.

The meme yesterday with ardern under a “Pornhub” banner was pretty childish but relatively harmless. I mean who in the world would imagine that Pornhub would employ her in any way.

The response from the left was to alter the post/meme to try to link it with Judith Collins, also childish but slightly more nasty as the media latch onto that. Then they decided to “show” that Judith’s husband was the culprit but couldn’t help themselves and superimposed his face onto an ape picture.

So, black lives only matter if they vote labour, or only if they carry guns or knives and threaten the police?

Last night I played around with Google Trends. It shows what terms people search for by country. I checked out “child poverty in New Zealand”. Betwen 2015 and 2017 the trend was up. It really spiked up when Jacinda became leader and then again when she introduced the Child Poverty Reduction Bill. Then searches declined steadily to 2020, down by about 70 percent.

Unfortunately I can’t figure out how to share the results on here.

  When Margaret Thatcher came to power in the UK, the country was a complete and utter basket case, rightly referred to as the sick man of Europe.
  
  Under the Heath, Wilson and Callaghan governments, the running of the country had been effectively handed over to the unions. The performance of the economy was dismal. And the country’s finances were in such a poor state that the government had to go cap in hand to the IMF for a bail out.
  
  Thatcher changed all that. The country’s economic performance and finances improved out of all recognition. The unelected union barons were put in their place. And most importantly, national pride was restored – no more sick man of Europe tag.
  
  Only slavering, anti-enterprise and anti-freedom lefties fail to recognise the transformation she achieved.

Discussing Politics with my family, and one of my cousin’s did a Political landscape thingy. and we noticed something weird.
They now have Labour almost dead centre on Economics, and a little above the line on Social, National slightly right of mid right (so on headed far right) on Economics, and almost dead centre on Social.

  Alot of the questions are loaded, I really hope ppl do not vote based on outcome of this. I completed it out of curiosity and it told me winston or labour, imo my answers would be very anti labour and only slight winstons way, and when you rank the parties at zero it still says you should vote for them.

We have seen what they have done, and not done, in Government, but much of that is not a reflection of their policies – it is a reflection of what they have managed, or not managed, to persuade Winston to agree with.   This article is racist crap against whites. It makes me mad because when I was a child (My family is white) we lived in poverty. We lived in HNZ housing in Panmure/GI area back in the 70s and 80s. We lived a new block of home units and the families we’re all mixed race actually there. All families were disfunctional to the extent where one or both parents were at least alcoholic (both mine were) and we all didn’t have very much. I put it down to life choices,not the race of the people. All families were given the chance to buy their unit after saving 7 years,but no one did. But there were endless parties and fights in our block of 4 every week. My parents achieved nothing and wasted their lives and put our family into poverty because of the choices they made…..not because of what race we were!!!…..I wish Maori elders would teach their people that life is what you make it and it’s about your personal choices you make as to what path you go down as an adult….when we are adults we can do what we like, if you become a loser then it’s your own fault!!….rant over now thank you.

    We were poor here too, but some better decisions: no alcoholism and eventually moved away from Auckland to buy a modest house. Patent reluctantly took a job ‘way beneath’ them to achieve that. Op shop clothes, vege garden. We got by with frugality and work and that’s how it should be.
    
    Now it’s all about ‘entitlement’ to benefits that keep people trapped.

Jacinda Ardern Says New Zealand Will Stay On Lockdown Until Scientists Discover Cure For Death

Those that decide not to be a “team member of the 5 million” in refusing to be tested for the risk of death? “Well they can’t now” according to the Prime Minister, they will be forced to stay at a Death Camp facility until they fully comply and are officially cleared from the risk of death.

He wants to blame the rioting and looting on Trump, and says that rioters and looters need to be arrested and prosecuted. The problem: Its HIS OWN PARTY that is deliberately prosecuting them. Why is he blaming Trump? The governors and mayors don’t report to Trump. Biden is the leader of the democratic party (supposedly), the Dem governors and mayors directly report to Biden more so than they do to Trump. If anything, the rioting and looting is a a result of a failure of leadership by Biden.

So if only 6% of Covid deaths, according to CDC, are solely the result of covid.
This explains why we have been reporting covid deaths in the wrong form. They should show a score for the level of health of those dying.
This was particularly important in the New Zealand statistics. If we had shown the additional factors rating for the deaths, it may have allowed a more considered approach to the dangers.
It also shows the reason that future pandemics could be more difficult to control. The numbers of people getting older, and those with lives extended by better healthcare, continues to increase.
Will it in future be, the additional factors that decide death rates rather than the actual disease?

  In ten years time when we look back at this we will conclude with people living longer and some elements of the population being increasingly unhealthy that unlike Spanish Flu COVID 19 was fatal to two specific groups and it turned on whether we could manage that effectively with the minimum of disruption to the rest of society.
  
  1) Those over 70.
  
  2) Those with pre existing illnesses.
  
  Out of the first 50,335 deaths in the U.K.
  
  i) 91.1% had at least one existing Co Morbidity all those are offered in the UK ONS report.
  
  ii) In June Covid 19 was the third most frequent cause of death at 7.1% In May it had been 21.6% and the highest.
  
  iii) Dementia and Altzeimers was the most frequent attendent underlying cause where Covid 19 was considered the primary factor between March and June at 25.6%
  
  iii) 79% were aged 75 and over, 8% under 65 in June. I looked at the previous months and they are very similiar.
  
  My simple view is the Mortality outcomes should be shaping policy.
  
  So to your central point if people live in the epilogue age longer and longer and my point people become less and less healthy the next Pandemic will hit harder not as a consequence of its kill factor but the health of its target.
  
  I should point out 5,000 deaths in the UK have been removed from the Covid total because they had Covid more than 28 days before rather it had been a past illness which they had recovered from.
  
  Japan is interesting an ageing population where I think we can trust the stats has a 10 per million death rate. That would be worth understanding.

    I have now been reading the media for the last four months and reading comments and I notice that there are only two places in the world.
    
    1) New Zealand a small nation with a population less than Victoria and at the bottom of the world.
    
    2) The United States with a population of 331 Million at the heart of trade routes and movement. With huge densely populated metrapolitan areas.
    
    It just strikes me always bringing up the US and Trumps handling of C 19 and how it has been handled here is something of a mis match. I can think of about ten other countries which would be a better match for a conversation. Thats not a comment on the way it has been handled in the US it is just to my mind a curious comparison it feels like a strawman argument. I mean why not chose Iceland, Taiwan Vietnam or South Korea nations wiht supportive cohesive populations and or Islands..

  This explains why we have been reporting covid deaths in the wrong form. They should show a score for the level of health of those dying.
  
  There’s been a bit of argument about this going on, on the sciencey forums I’m on from time to time – your cause of death is Bat Flu, regardless of what pre-existing conditions you have. You know, another “shut-down” the dissenting voices job.

An interesting article by Fran O’Sullivan in the Herald this morning, buried on page 18 (paywalled). It confirms what I had heard from a friend of one of the entrepreneurs trying to assist the government – that the reason Cindy locked down was a threat by one of their number to publish full page ads in all the major NZ papers asserting that the government was going to create a disaster if they didn’t lock down.
Cindy of course was waiting for her moment of fame on March 15.
It seems that this rather than the advice from friends in London may have prompted her to do the lockdown.
I didn’t share before now given the source but now it’s in the public domain. However it should be on the front page. Here is an extract:
“Entrepreneur Sam Morgan broke an unofficial code with his public venting over the Government’s tardiness to swiftly test and adopt the CovidCard that had been developed under his leadership.
Morgan was one of the group of high-profile entrepreneurs who privately lobbied Jacinda Ardern and Grant Robertson in late March to swiftly impose a lockdown to curtail the spread of Covid-19.
They were let into Ardern’s tight Cabinet tent with one proviso.
That was they should observe confidentiality. They should not embarrass the Government publicly by dissing on Cabinet Ministers (officials were not to be open season either) over their response to Covid-19. They were either ‘in the tent’ or ‘they were not in the tent’ – although the exact phrasing was not so blunt.
Others on that initial call with Ardern and Robertson included the low-profile Kiwi billionaire investor Graeme Hart of whom it is said in top-level business circles had been prepared to underwrite full-page advertisements in newspapers to make clear the Government needed to ‘go hard’; former Air New Zealand CEO and former Icebreaker executive chairman Rob Fyfe; The Warehouse founder Sir Stephen Tindall, investor Craig Heatley and Zuru founder Nick Mowbray.
They had been alarmed at the Government’s failure at that point to take decisive action. While Ardern told them that she and Robertson had already decided to move – “we’re already there” – some see that as simply face-saving.”

Why doesn’t our PM and Bloomfield acknowledge this during there tv briefings?

This over reaction to another flu strain (covid-19) is not going to kill Kiwis anymore than the common cold/flu does.

This is as shocking as it is unsurprising, sadly. Wellington City Councillor makes a cringe-inducing mea culpa and apology, and promises to go on a cultural safety course after committing the unforgivable crime of turning his back on a “waiata” which as far as I’m concerned is the name of one of the less-good Split Enz albums from the 1980s.

Everyone is so petrified of offending the scribble faces that even the simple fact of objecting to a tuneless interruption of Council business by woke leftards is seen as the equivalent of doing a poo on the Mayor’s desk.

Why on earth should someone pay any attention, or give any credence to a stone-age separatist ideology, especially when the matter in hand was voting to give themselves even more illegitimate say in Council decisions?

I don’t like using vulgar language, but sometimes you just have to tell people to get fucked.

  If one accepts those definitions, would it not be correct to state that a move to establish iwi seats on council committees, which would mean a representative from each of Wellington’s two iwi – Te Āti Awa Taranaki Whānui and Ngāti Toa Rangatira – is appointed (note that – appointed, not elected, which is something that councillor Sean Rush was not in favour of) to all of the council’s committees and subcommittees, is introducing “Brown privilege”?

  Just read the same article. Captain, I agree with you, this decision is a disgrace and sets a bad precedent. Effectively, it will now be possible to have name suppression in all cases.
  
  How does that serve the victims or the community?
  
  He and his lawyer claim he has has suffered mental anguish and extreme economic hardship? How when we “technecially” don’t even know who this individual is and nor would 99% of NZ?
  
  This decision makes a mockery of the NZ justice system, and says you well protected, if you are well connected, even if you admit your guilt.

“Based on our Upper Estimates it will save 69 Hectors annually and 1 Maui every ten years.”
IM: “Is minister aware of any Maui death from fishing practices in last 10 years?”
SN “No!”
IM: “Does he agree we see little or no evidence of increase in Maui Dolphin population, despite there being only one recorded death from fishing practices?”

How much research has their been on causes of youth suicide in New Zealand? It is clearly a national disgrace, and I’m sure that everyone will agree that we need to “do more”.

However, I am concerned to read articles like this one:

The article spends about 80% of the words talking about causes being “inequality”, “Colonialism” and “Obesity”. It is not until we get to the bottom of the article that we learn that the tragic death introduced in the opening paragraph may have been related to bullying.

I’m trying to be sensitive about this. As a parent of a couple of young girls, I am worried about things like bullying; they’ve both experienced low-level bullying already (in their first couple of years of primary school). We try to teach resilience, and encourage our girls to “ignore the bullies”. I support school programs on being good internet citizens.

Does anyone know of any (credible) research into child and youth suicide? If it really is inequality, then I’ll slink off into the corner. If it is actually more likely things like bullying, then can’t we have a more “adult” conversation, and focus on that rather than trying push the barrow that inequality is the root of all evil?

(and yes, I get that things are inter-twined. Does inequality cause bullying? Hmm.)

She then doubles down on her baked-in prejudice by asking “How else could Muslim and Christian Palestinians cope with the killing of their children, theft of their land, and the misery of life under occupation?”

All that is required for peace in the Middle East Donna, is for your fellow travelers to stop trying to eradicate Israel and Jews from the face of the earth, as is their often-stated goal.

Good to see the BBC has reversed its decision to ban the singing of Land of Hope and Glory at the Last Night of the Proms. They buckled to an enormous backlash. Good job…the public have spoken. About time these woke morons got their comeuppance. Actually the BBC has a new director and he sounds like a good man. He has said that too many of the Beeb’s comedy shows are left wing. Hope this means the tide is turning. As a matter of interest I read the complete lyrics of Land of Hope and Glory today. it is patriotic, yes and rightly so, but there is nothing whatsoever you could take offence to, although the woke obviously found something. nationals new announcement on payments for parents: “The $3000 payment scheme would not provide parents cash, but a portion of funding administered by the government that parents could choose to allocate on specified services.” this will be an administrative nightmare for parents and suppliers. Ok a few days ago PriNZess told us we must only listen to ministers to ensure we get the best possible picture of what’s going on.

Yesterday Hipkins said AUckland would be going to L1 soon.

Today PriNZess is saying “Don’t want to get ahead of ourselves”.

So WTF???

If Auckland has come off L3 to L2.5, then there is really no way the rest of NZ should have ever been on L2 (let alone now).

I suppose that if only Auckland was on Level 2.5 or 3 and the rest of NZ was on L1 (or nothing) then I supposed Aucklanders would have said it was unfair and they would have had far less compliance (as well as lost a whole lot of political support).

So the rest of us just got L2 so that Labour can keep its votes.

Talk about Professional Arseholes. This mob really know how to do it.

  What a terrible tragedy.
  Unfortunately shooting this guy wont bring back the dead baby boy or save the young girl from a life of paralysis.
  It would be cheaper to provide free train travel and bus rides for the hundreds of dangerous/unlicensed/drunk/you name it drivers who should never be permitted behind the wheel of a vehicle.

If the union has conceded 75% of market rental then this should count as a donation to the Labour Party. On the other hand, if the actual market rental is $1500, which is what the union is getting, then labour is definitely rorting the system by charging four times market rental to the taxpayer.
It might be well within the rules but not all of the rules. Cindy needs to be questioned about the morality of her party.

  When Bill English (and the Greens) did something similar many years ago, it was also within the rules.
  
  But of course the “activist left” went crazy over that matter (and still do, even on KB)!
  
  Bill English re-paid the money (as being the “right thing to do”). Will Labour or Ginny Anderson do the same? ~~Yeah~~ Nah!

    Interestingly, this seems to have been happening for most of the time that Trevor Mallard was the MP for Hutt South, and latterly a List MP after he ceded the electorate to Chris Bishop in 2017, because he couldn’t contemplate being beaten.

At last the government has stopped (temporarily) the export of live animals.
Only because a boat has gone down carrying 5 to 6 thousand cows and 43 humans.
Is it that common for boats to go down in typhoons….or is it something about the nature of these ships?
