  I’d go even further than that. Having observed over the last few months, and seen nearly nothing add up, I’d even go so far as to say the entire thing, everywhere in the world, is an attempt to prevent Trump getting re-elected in the US.
  
  And if you are wondering if that sounds incredible and would be going to far, it’s got to be believable, so the whole planet must be “affected.” Think about the rationale: Do China want Trump re-elected? Does the EU? Do any of the supranational institutions? Do the liberal elite and Deep State in the US? Does Big Tech? Does NZ have any real say in what our response is? The answer to all of these questions is NO.

    the attacks on trump are phenomenal, while I dont agree with everything he does and says I admire him for taking everything that gets thrown at him.

  I for one do. If travel out of Auckland had continued to have been restricted while infections spread there, the rest of the country should have been back in Level One. The question remains whether their manipulation of the pandemic for political purposes will blow up in Labour’s faces if, God forbid, there is an outbreak in Queenstown for example. Hipkins’ ridiculous idea that Aucklanders should take their Level 2.5 bubble with them when they travel was an attempt to disclaim any responsibility for the virus’ spread outside Auckland.     Just saw Michael Barnett in downtown Mount, hope he’s got his 2.5 bubble with him! He seemed happy enough! Why wouldn’t he be, to be able to spend a lovely weekend in paradise! He wasn’t alone, it looked like half of Remmers and two thirds of Epsom are here too! Great for the businesses! We left in a hurry, no car parks, cafes full! Oh well, coffee at home again!

  Covid is still active in Auckland, and people from Auckland are allowed to move freely around the country (including the Sth Island – Chch, Queenstown, Auckland-bred uni students to and from Dunedin). It’s not completely outlandish to have some measures in place to mitigate damage if it makes a jump.

The future of Wellington’s central library is up for consultation until 5pm Monday 7 September.

Apparently the plan is to future proof the library by spending hundreds of millions of OPM on bricks and mortar. Not sure they have much idea of the future of physical material though there is a sort of nod to online and downloads.

Perhaps they haven’t noticed how many devices and roving support staff they could provide for those hundreds of millions. Did I mention OPM? Hundreds of millions?

At present there are 3 smaller library locations in the CBD, plus a lot of CBD empty storefronts, supplemented by a free reserve system from an offsite store. And the email and phone support is very good. Sounds like future proofing to me, but no they want a great big flash building. Why?

Wellington people – have your say. It’s your big bucks they want to spend.

  The consultation won’t make any difference. They have already decided…
  
  They could have 10 library hubs. Quiet places for people to plug in online and to study and read. These spaces would benefit kids from dysfunctional families with no quiet spaces at home. All the books can be in a warehouse. Access within 24 hours delivered to your hub.
  
  The whole town hall library precinct can be demolished and the land sold to developers for high end housing. Proceeds would retire council debt.
  
  Of course that won’t happen. Because it is sensible. Wellington Council is a bit like Golriz Ghahraman. Whatever they want to do, think the exact opposite and you will be on the right track.

    I think you are right. Demolish the library, the old town hall, administration building, city gallery and the Michael Fowler Centre. That’s the ‘whole precinct’, right?
    That’s a primo block of central city land worth many, many millions.
    The council doesn’t need to meet in person – that’s what Zoom is for. Council staff can work from home or out in the field doing useful stuff. No one goes to concerts or art galleries any more – they can stream that stuff online.

      Or alternatively say. We want open space in the middle for people. We want a world class library for people to study, browse, chat and play of XXX,XXXX square metres. We want gallery and cafe and public space.
      
      We don’t need any more concert halls than keeping the Fowl House. The Opera House and St James are woefully (and expensively) under-utilised, how about we take a whole of Wellington approach to the entertainment precinct?
      
      We want light shafts so its nice to be there, and we want natural access to the water front.
      
      Offer us some solutions, all of the airspace is yours in exchange for these public facilities.
      
      Host an international design competition.
      
      The Council has demonstrated repeatedly that it lacks the competence or experience to manage the drains, how can it possibly expect to fix Civic Sq.

      Libraries are hardly what they used to be any more.
      
      I’m a frequent physical library user – I use it way more than most people. However:
      1) Most of the books I end up borrowing are now electronic – downloaded from the convenience of my couch – when I want.
      2) Most of the paper books I borrow are ordered from other branches (via the website) and my local library is just a pick up/drop off point for those books.
      3) When I do visit the library, most of the people there are just using the computers for youtube etc.
      
      Still, they need a staff of 6 or so to do that.

        The Council is building a new very flash library incorporating an art gallery demanded by the “right people” who have a lot of influence here.
        The old library is ok and is (or has been) a haven for lots and lots of backpackers keen to use the free wifi and get out of the rain for a few hours.
        There’s also a little family of homeless and lonely who congregate there every day.
        Not sure the this last group will be so welcome at the new palace – and of course -very few tourists wanting free stuff there now.
        Will be interesting to see if new library pays its way hahahahah!

      That’s the trouble with that strategy, you take it places Benedict never intended to go.
      
      I made heavy use of the electronic book options using the Libby reader. I think he’s on the right track. Because most wellingtonians don’t live within easy reach of the cbd.
      
      I see nothing wrong with the concept of smaller suburban hubs and greater electronic access to reading material.

      No they can’t demolish the Michael Fowler Centre. It has good acoustics and I attend NZSO concerts there. There is nowhere else in Wellington suitable for concerts.

    I spent time at the national library offshoot during vacations back in the day. I was horrified at what we had to throw out. First editions, University set texts, but because we couldn’t give them away or sell them (govt property you see) they were shredded instead.

        The policy at the time was that if the book had not been issued for X years, it was disposed of.
        
        I think you might have confused national library with parliamentary library? Isn’t that where you have to send a NZ published book? I can’t remember.

Would we bee hearing this information now if Aucklanders had excepted the decision of Jacinda Ardern to extend the 2.5 lockdown in Auckland. A group of five cases of COVID-19 in Botany has raised enough alarms forthe Government to keep Auckland at level 2.5 for at least to more weeks. So I have to ask is Jacinda and Labour playing loose with the truth as the first casi in Botany was August 28 and it has taken six day to inform the public that it is a different strain as they haven’t been able to link it at this point.

What I don’t get, is how Jacinda has dismissed NZ’s high child poverty stats just released (stating they used old data). But the annual suicide stats to June 2020 are held up to prove lockdown measures didn’t increase suicide.

So I am to believe it’s all ok, cause UNICEF aren’t given up to date data for child poverty, but the government does keep up to date data for suicide.

What’s the bet that child poverty has infact skyrocketed as has suicide, and the government is too scared to show us the facts.

    I think it does take quite some time for suicides to show up in the official stats as they have to be confirmed by a coroner investigation first. We all know of coroner’s reports taking 6 months at best to a few years. Therefore it is very probable that the stats are correct for the reporting timeframe as it stands now. Jacinda is spinning this as all okay. What will happen is over the next 6 to months to 2 years the coroners’ reports will come through and the ‘bubble of extra deaths’ will be noticeable.
    
    This will be one of the many, many , many social problems evident before 2023 election – which Jacinda will avoid addressing by being appointed to the UN just before all the shit happens.

  Actually the child poverty rates have declined. This was because poverty was defined as a family getting below a % of the median (which is not the mean) income. With all the jobs disappearing, it is likely that the median income has also declined so a lot of families have had the % increased (but no more money) so they are no longer poor.
  It shows the stupidity of the definition more than anything else.

        I haven’t read the story, because it is irrelevant to my point, which is the general point of which sources are the most reliable. You’re just waffling and struggling: give me a reason, or a set of reasons, why USA Today is more reliable than Breitbart, for example, besides your own subjective prejudice.
        
        Merely asserting without evidence that “it takes no great act of discernment to consider that USA Today might be more reliable than Breitbart” is not an argument. My argument against the approved corporate media is that, in the case of Trump as the prime example, they have been nearly universally wrong in all of their purported “scandals” and the like over the last 4 years.
        
        I’m not claiming that any one source is not biased, because they all are, according to the ideology or politics of their shareholders. To just claim that the Big Guys have greater veracity just because they are the Big Guys is not proof of their veracity. It’s just proof of what you prefer to hear and read.

        OK, so I can therefore conclude, in the absence of any stated rational justification from yourself, that you just accept as fact anything that your favourite sources tell you, because that is what you have always done. Not everyone is analytic, and old habits are hard to break, so I’m not passing judgment on your prejudice. I’ll let others here judge you appropriately.
        
        No doubt you diligently noted the following passage in your much vaunted USA Today article:
        
        “… by right-wing conspiracy theorists known as QAnon. Their attacks against Wiener included death threats, homophobia and anti-semitism, according to the San Francisco Chronicle”
        
        Here is an excellent example, strategically placed in the opening paragraphs, of what many “trusted” outlets will do to strengthen their case, and is usually indicative of a weak case to follow. Moreover, phrases like “fact check” also imply veracity, merely on the basis of the statement being present on the page.
        
        The above propaganda has the effect of establishing a prejudicial predisposition in the reader’s mind. The idea is that “these people are x, and they do y, and z (a mere assertion, and according to someone else), and therefore you should not believe anything they say, no matter how rational, logical or truthful what they say may be.” This is a common tactic used to mislead the gullible, but is easily perceptible to the careful reader.

    It is correct that the offence of, “consensual” sex between, say, an 11 year old and a 20 year old will NOT automatically lead to the offender being placed on a sex offender list – the judge has the right to prevent such a listing. Which will no doubt depend on whether the offender has the appropriate political affiliation or not.

      From USA Today:
      
      Before SB-145, an 18-year-old male convicted of having oral or anal sex with a 17-year-old male would be required to register as a sex offender, while a 24-year-old male convicted of having penile-vaginal sex with a 15-year-old female would not be automatically required to register – it would be left up to the judge.
      
      All the law change was to make registration as a sex offender at the discretion of a judge in equivalent cases.

    No. All this law change about is whether some felons are automatically registered as sex offenders, as opposed to that being left at the discretion of the judge. It simply corrected an unequal treatment by gender of similar crimes. Under the previous law, a 25 year old man having consensual sex with a 15 year old boy automatically was registered as a sex offender, whereas a 25 year old man having consensual sex with a 15 year old girl was only registered as a sex offender at the discretion of the judge.
    The morons above could not follow this. Too complicated apparently. They could not comprehend that the Breitbart headline might be misleading.

The UK Daily Telegraph reports “not putting patients on a ventilator caused a drop in death rates.”
Basically ventilators are a suboptimal breathing method compared to Mother Nature’s.

  I’ve seen a few posts on twitter of the horrendous behaviour of Victorian police and it truly terrifies me. Apart from the pregnant woman being arrested there are others. I have just seen one where a man was woken by police early in the morning and called down from his upstairs window to ask why and what did they want. They wouldn’t tell him specifically but it was something to do with Facebook, I think. As he questioned the police, and refused to open his door until they told him why he was being questioned, they smashed down his door and hand cuffed him. This is absolute fascism and what is so scary about it is that a lot of Victorians think Dictator Dan is doing a good job. be fearful, New Zealanders, we could be next.

On its website the Green School says its “living” curriculum educates for sustainability through “community-integrated, entrepreneurial learning, in a natural environment”. These are all elements in alignment with the Greens’ kaupapa.

But Shaw’s political opponents quickly worked out that this meant the Greens were effectively providing public money to support a private school, which was contra to the Greens’ education policy to phase out public funding for private schools.

Also … What was widely considered to be a poor call by Shaw was followed up with news of a leaked email of 7 August that suggested that Shaw had refused to sign off funding for other infrastructure projects “until the Green School in Taranaki is incorporated”.

So Shaw seems to have, for some yet not fully and satisfactorily explained reason and seemingly without consultation with others in his Party, hung out to the point of political ransom or blackmail to give the school a grant, whereas the school actually claims it wanted a portion of that as a loan.

On the face of it, it was a benign decision that supported the creation of 200 construction jobs on a “shovel ready”, environmentally friendly school expansion project in a region that hasn’t felt particularly well supported after the Ardern-led government in 2018 banned new permits for oil and gas exploration, the lifeblood of the Taranaki economy.

So one aspect of this was Shaw’s intent to contribute something back to a community and economy which he had traded off their future explorations with Winston Peters deal for Green support of Winston’s paranoiac wake-jumping bill.
Which now of course adds to the hypocrisy of Winston’s present attacks on Shaw, hoping to lower their popularity to below the 5% thresh-hold where his own party founders.

And other questions on the side –
• Is the funding to provide work ($11.7 million, 200 jobs, so $58,500 each) or will it include material for construction as well, so how much less than $58,500 is each job worth – perhaps not so much really?
(Considering students pay around $45,000 each a year to attend the school)
• And is the school fully registered as a school or not?

  One is the Green School’s insistence on privacy. That’s okay for any commercial entity in normal circumstances, but these aren’t and if they want to hang on to their public windfall their books need to be more accessible.

Here is a very interesting and concerning article on the virus – showing how we have been duped by erroneous analysis and poorly constructed mathematical models.

A teaser:
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. With influenza, Dr Fauci, the CDC, his co-authors, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the National Institutes of Health and the New England Journal of Medicine got case fatality rate and infection fatality rate mixed up with influenza. Easy mistake to make. Could have done it myself. But didn’t.

You want to know where Imperial College London really got their 1% infection fatality rate figure from? It seems clear that they got it from Anthony S Fauci and the New England Journal of Medicine. The highest impact journal in the world – which should have the highest impact proof-readers in the world. But clearly does not.

Imperial College then used this wrong NEJM influenza case fatality rate 0.1%. It seems that they then compared this 0.1% figure to the reported COVID case fatality rate, estimated to be 1% and multiplied the impact of COVID by ten – as you would. As you probably should.

So, we got Lockdown. The US used the Fauci figure and got locked down. The world used that figure and got locked down.

  The misuse of numerical methods is beyond appalling. Sure, if you test you will get increasing numbers, that’s simply the output of testing. That tells nothing about the population as a whole. There are procedures for that with proven validity vide the Central Limit Theorem.
  
  What we are encountering is corruption masquerading to inform public policy. This govt is not able to discern the truth so substitutes it’s own inadequate opinions as a cause of action. Their Public Servants seem largely incompetent too, so nothing gets done. Now, we are at risk of another three years with Pooh Bah having access to money via the Reserve Bank.
  Parliament has to authorise expenditure of tax monies. Why should it not have to specifically authorise what Shane Jones sprinkles around or what Robbo can get from the Reserve Bank money tree? We need Constitutional Police to intervene.

      You should do some more study on the evolution of our Westminister system of law, also legal system, Parliament and the right to tax.
      There’s a 1,000 years of history justifying my position that our present administration is skating on thin ice. The allocation of vast global sums for indeterminate purposes is contrary to parliaments control and responsibility for expenditure.
      The “Estimates” which go with the Appropriation Bill are very detailed and amounts not provided for miss out. Spending beyond the sum approved requires audit authority and an agreement for subsequent approval. The seriousness of Parliamentary oversight is embedded in the requirements that “money” Bill’s have to have prior notice given to the house of their proposed introduction.
      Parliament exercises it’s authority through its right to tax and to spend. Global sums cannot have the prior approval required by Parliament for the expenditure. The Parliament is NOT the govt but the whole House. They alone have the say.

  You need to read the original The Atlantic story, before you say it is just trolling. The journalists specifically refer to senior staffers who heard Trump say these things. They in fact quote one of them. I know you think MSM journalists just make things up, but no reputable journalist does that. The Atlantic (a highly regarded magazine) would have been very sure of their sources before they printed the story.
  
  In contrast your reference is just opinion. The author has not actually interviewed anyone other than his own typewriter.

Every day we hear of a piddling number of ‘covid cases’.

From the Herald – 176 deaths in Auckland this last week.
How many people get so ill every day that they need to go see their doctor?

Just how long will the govt continue with this charade of saving lives by denying the population to live their lives going to continue?

What’s the point of having a big rugby or cricket match on if we’re not allowed to go watch it live?
As there’s every chance someone might get sick and possible die as a result of attending a match, then obviously the whole world must stay locked out of attending them forever.

    There is no such thing as “the flu”.
    
    There are many different strains of flu.
    Most are less infectious than Sars-cov-2.
    But some are more infectious than Sars-cov-2.
    
    Spanish Flu was far, far more infectious. It infected approx 30% of the world’s population. And those were OBVIOUS infections of people with symptoms because back then they did not have tests to show up asymptomatic cases.
    
    So far approx 0.3% of people have been infected by Sars-cov-2 – so one hundredth as infectious as Spanish flu.
    
    But wait, there’s more…
    
    Over 80% of Sars-cov-2 cases are asymptomatic so if we used the same standard as used for the Spanish flu then 80% of Sars-cov-2 infections would be discounted.
    
    Using that standard, Spanish flu was over 1000 times as infectious as Sars-cov-2.
    
    And we could say the same thing for Asian flu and HK flu (just with different numbers).

  The lockdowns are badly affecting the community health at all levels. Among the children and younger people anxiety has been ramped up severely. I see it in my family and their friends and acquaintances. The disruption to their schooling or work has been ignored but not by them. Ignore economic disaster, that could be small beer by comparison to what a further lockdown could do to public health. Families are already stretched caring for their young, don’t let a mental health tsunami loose.
  This govt doesn’t have the capacity to understand the quality of the advice it has to sift through to make decisions. It has the duty of care not the “experts.” Better to fall and pass the task on to those trained to make decisions.
  NZ cannot afford a re-run of this incapable COL. Can we get our money back, please.

Is there anything more distressing than the countless referrals, by animal rights groups, to the loss of 5800 cattle with scant mention of the 1 dead and 41 missing crew.
The loss of the vessel is a tragedy and a demonstration of the perils of the seas.
Among the many lessons to be learned, is that the cruise ship industry must ensure all safety precautions are monitored and enforced.
Instead of that, the loss is an opportunity to promote their animal welfare concerns.
Even though the loss has very little/nothing to do with animal welfare.

He was telling me that since they legalised cannabis in Canada two years ago the gangs have been employing standover tactics on the legal dope shops and are now largely in control of the business.

Followed by “The Ministry of Health confirmed Williams was the second death related to Covid-19, and that he died at Auckland City Hospital on Friday night.”

But then it says “His cause of death has not been given, but if it was Covid-19 related, he would be the second death related to the cluster.”

So was his death due to COVID, related to COVID, due to another reason or presently unknown?

  Dr Williams was confirmed as having tested positive to coronavirus early in the current cluster outbreak. He was the “go-to” GP for Pasifika in Auckland and further afield, with around 15,000 patients registered with his practice at Mount Wellington, hear the Americold coolstore.
  
  He has been a dedicated, loyal servant of the Cook Islands community in New Zealand, and was still practising as a GP in his 80’s. He was a truly remarkable human being, and his death will be keenly felt. Good luck trying to restrict his funeral to 50 peaople!

Lesson 1: Nobody reads now so, if you want to make sure people follow the rules, you tell them the rules yourself. Right down to the very fine print.
Lesson 2: Nobody remembers what leaders say the first time: so you must always repeat the message, over and over again, until it is fully understood.
Can anyone remember when they have seen any other PM/President tell the people the message, in such minute detail?

oob’s report of the anti-lockdown demonstration.

Just home from the demo now. I happened upon the demo three weekends ago in Britomart Square, in my estimation there were 300 people. Last week I attended Aotea Square where there were in my estimation 1,500 people. Today at Aotea Square there were about 400 people.

The first chap (in the brown leather jacket) spoke well, making reasonable arguments about the economic cost of lockdown and pursuing an eradication strategy.

The second chap introduced himself as a “naturopath oncologist something something homeopathy” which is the point I lost interest. He then proceeded to promote a bunch of wild conspiracy theories interspersed with a bunch of hippie nonsense remedies.

Which was the point at which I wandered off. I don’t think the organisers realise just how much damage speakers like this do to their cause.

I wandered down to Britomart Square to catch the end of the march. There was a superb juxtaposition as this Saturday is the monthly market in Britomart Square, with a bunch of stalls and seating set up, people eating waffles and drinking coffee. Then the demo turned up and you could see the WTF? expressions on all the people who were there for the market stalls.

Now to the interesting bit: the mood was much more confrontational. The bloke in the brown leather jacket spoke again but this time was a lot more aggressive. He spoke about police harassment of the demo and addressed the authorities directly with words to the affect of “if you suppress our rights you will have to go all the way, more people will come to our side and we will fight back.”

This is the moment I noticed two things:

1. There were at least twice as many police in Britomart Square as there had been on the previous two occasions.

2. Some of the demonstrators were tooled up. For example, flags that were attached to wooden dowels in previous weeks were attached to metal poles this week. For another, there were people carrying carved “walking sticks” that were more taiaha than walking stick.

It all ended peacefully fortunately with the crowd singing the national anthem at the end as they did on the previous two occasions. I waited around for about ten minutes and the police didn’t disperse the crowd as they had done in the past and the demonstrators milled about talking and buying coffee from the stalls.

  Interestingly the report and video on twitter says there were 1200 today. I watched the video and it did seem a much bigger crowd than 400 but I thought they looked like a very motley bunch. Not a march I’d want to be associated with even though I do object to the lock downs and taking away of our freedoms. I was livid to find supermarkets are making people queue up again. The old guy from Drain Surgeons just happened to mention …..”people have far less problem with blocked sewer pipes if they use a cheap brand of Toilet Paper”. Apparently, it dissolves about 3-times quicker than the Premium stuff. Only downside is, my partner really really hates it.

The row over the naming of the Huber run at the Mount Hutt skifield continues to divide southerners.

The founding father of the skifield is regarded as Austrian-born Willi Huber, who served in the Waffen SS in World War 2, and died at age 97 last month.

A petition is calling for the commemorative “Huber run” to be renamed, and for a commemorative plaque to be removed.

In a letter in the Otago Daily Times today, the writer Philip Temple says the petition is organised by Rob Berg, president of the Zionist Federation of New Zealand. Temple asks why Berg did not “wish to have his religious and political connections known”.

The letter is printed under the heading “Nazi petition”, which conceivably whacks those on both sides of the issue.

The Christchurch newspaper, the Star, last week supported those criticising the commemoration of Huber at the skifield.

However, in this week’s edition of the Star, two letter writers, including one who is a US Army veteran, challenge the newspaper’s stance on Huber and Mount Hutt Skifield.

Another plug-ugly offering from SE-Asia, demonstrating just how little has been done to develop the motor vehicle.
Too high, lousy visibility, too much techno-crap, designed by cross-eyed idiots who have no idea of proportion or lines or balance.
Engine bay cramped to the point where you can’t even find the oil filter, let alone change it.
These things have become just a clothes-hanger for video screens, reversing cameras ( because you can’t see anything out of that tiny rear window ), gimmickey keys and starter mechanisms etc etc.

  It is not just SE Asian vehicles, but pretty much all manufacturers who did the fashionable thing of cutting down on glass and visibility over the last few years.
  
  It might look cool when you use a ute for clubbing, but if you’re using a ute for what it was really supposed to be used for (eg. farm work) then lots of visibility is a must.
  
  The same goes for the placement of tail lights etc. An argument with a gate gets very expensive.

Try deleting it in the browser address bar and reloading to see if it works, then copy that remaining basic link.

It always works for Facebook links, but
with your later “This may not work either.” weird link, taking away everything after .jpg brings an error: Bad Time Stamp.

I hope you’ll think it worth trying.

I don’t know what Facebook gets out of it, or if gatewaypundit pays them for clicks, etc. but Facebook ain’t poor, and apart from that it’s just ugly!

Even DPF slips into this – hover over the Update link to Stuff at the end of his recent “The Mayor’s house purchase” post and we see all this appended to the link, which works perfectly well without it:

  Yep, I’m always careful to cut off the rubbish after the question mark. Sometimes it can be hard to tell in Facebook, so my practice is to ‘save’ the Facebook post (click the ellipsis, or 3 dots) at the top of the post and Save. Then from Home, click on ‘Saved’ from the left side and locate the link you just saved. Clicking the ellipsis next to the post brings up “View Original Post” and it will open without all the trash in the address.
